I have a 2006 Mercedes C280 which I purchased almost a year ago with 57,000 miles. It currently has 73,000 miles and is having major mechanical problems which have been life threatening due to when and where they occur. 1. Loss of transmission upon acceleration. If I pull over, turn it off and restart, it will shift fine until it decides it wants to do it again and I either lose the ability to shift, or it goes into limp mode without a Check engine light. This has happened on the freeway, heavy traffic, and have been several close calls. The shop said the codes were for transmission malfunction and valve body malfunction. Just out of nowhere. 2. Check engine light goes on and off repeatedly and The plastic intake manifold needs to be replaced because it is one of the defects Mercedes was sued for on this particular year, model, and engine. All of the oxygen sensors are going out as well and that is just the start. The cost for the part alone is in the $1000 range. My mechanic said the best is yet to come and explained around my current mileage on up is when most of the damage takes place with the valves and whatever else happened with this engine. I'm not sure exactly what all the problems were but he said to take it to the junkyard and was very serious which infuriates me because it's a beautiful car and I couldn't in good conscience sell it to anyone. Mercedes is fully aware of this but not a lot of people benefited from the settlement. The same problems are known by all owners and German mechanics.

We take it into Mercedes Benz and they diagnose a cam shaft issue. It turns out all 2006 Mercedes Benz C280 have the same problem with the same mileage. This car is a safety hazard and needs to be recalled.

INSPECTED FUEL SENDER UNDER ACCESS CAP, UNDERNEATH REAR PASSENGER BENCH DRIVER'S SIDE ON APRIL 9TH 2021. FOUND FUEL PUDDLING IN/AROUND THE EXTERIOR OF FUEL SENDING UNIT. CLEANED OUT FUEL PUDDLE. MOST OF THESE SYMPTOMS ARE ALSO SIMILAR TO CASE WITH THE 2003-2006 MERCEDES BENZ E55 AMG AND CLS VEHICLES FOUND UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA13003 REGARDING EMISSIONS RECALL FOR AMG MODELS USING HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEMS.

WHILE REVERSING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY THE CAR LOCKED UP BOTH THE ENGINE AND STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT I HAD TO TURN IN ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES AND THE PUT IT BACK IN DRIVE BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO FINALLY REVERSE THIS INCIDENT PLACED MY LIFE IN DANGER BECAUSE WHEN THE CAR LOCKED UP HALF OF IT WAS ON THE DRIVEWAY AND THE OTHER HALF IN THE STREET IMPEDING TRAFFIC. I AM NERVOUS ABOUT DRIVING THIS CAR BECAUSE IT DOESN'T RESPOND AS QUICKLY AS IT SHOULD WHICH COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.

WHEN DRIVING MY '06 C350 WITH 48 THOUSAND MILES, YES 48K ON IT, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO GO INTO A SAFE MODE. IT NORMALLY OCCURS WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND HAVE TO SLOW DOWN GRADUALLY, THEN UPON ACCELERATION THE TRANSMISSION JUST REVS UP THE RPM WITH NO POWER. I'M AFRAID ME AND MY TWO CHILDREN WILL BE REAR-ENDED DUE TO THE LOSS OF POWER IN THE TRANSMISSION. I THEN TRY TO DRIVE IT TO THE NEXT EXIT, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTART. THIS NORMALLY RESETS EVERYTHING TO NORMAL. BUT IT COULD OCCUR AGAIN MINUTES OR HOURS LATER WHICH IS NOW GETTING FRUSTRATING GIVEN THE CAR IS BARELY REACHING 50K MILES. SO THIS HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY, UNEXPECTEDLY, AND WITH VARYING FREQUENCY. MERCEDES BENZ USA SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS AS WHEN I CALL THE DEALERSHIP THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED AND IT'S A VERY WELL-KNOW DEFECT THAT COSTS A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT TO REPAIR. THIS CAR STARTED DOING IT AT 40K AND DOES IT OFTEN. I'VE NOTIFIED MY LAWYER BECAUSE I'M AFRAID IT COULD HAPPEN WITH A VEHICLE BEHIND ME AND THUS CAUSE AN UNEXPECTED REAR END IMPACT FROM ANOTHER DRIVER ON THE HIGHWAY.

CONTACTED MULTIPLE MERCEDES-BENZ DEALERSHIPS FOR PART # 209-466-00-81 PRESSURE HOSE AND IT WAS NOT AVAILABLE. IT IS ON WORLD WIDE BACK ORDER WITH NO TENTATIVE DATE FOR REPLACEMENT. I'M NOW UNABLE TO DRIVE VEHICLE DUE TO AN UNAVAILABLE PART WITH NO DATE ON WHEN I COULD DRIVE DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE LEAK SEEMS TO BE DRIPPING ONTO THE FRONT SWAY BAR WITH ABOUT A DROP PER MINUTE. SEVERAL HOURS LATER, I ENTERED MY GARAGE AND WAS IMMEDIATELY OVERWHELMED WITH THE FUMES OF GASOLINE. I CHECKED MY CAR AGAIN, BUT WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY LEAKS. I THEN OPEN MY CAR DOOR AND THE FUMES WERE EVEN STRONGER. AFTER LOOKING AROUND, I NOTICED THE ODOR WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE REAR SEAT. FEARING AN EXPLOSION MAY OCCUR, I OPENED MY GARAGE DOORS AND CAR DOOR AND TURNED ON SEVERAL FANS TO "AIR-OUT" THE AREA. THE NEXT DAY, I DROVE TO THE DEALER AND EXPLAINED. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MY YEAR AND MODEL AND SAID THE FUEL GASKETS WERE BAD ON TOP OF THE GAS TANK WHICH IS RIGHT UNDER THE BACK SEAT. HE EXPLAINED WHEN FILLING UP, THE SEALS LEAK, BECOME SATURATED WITH FUEL AND EVEN SATURATE THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE SEAT. HE SAID IF I WANTED IT FIXED, IT WOULD BE AN ESTIMATED $500. HE ALSO SAID IF I DID NOT WANT TO PAY TO FIX IT, HE SUGGESTED I ONLY FILL MY TANK TO 3/4 SO THE SEALS WOULD NOT BECOME WET. I EXPLAINED TO HIM THAT MY CAR WAS STILL LIKE NEW WITH ONLY 38,000 MILES AND MBZ SHOULD FIX THE MANUFACTURER DEFECT AT NO CHARGE. HE REFUSED. I CONTINUE TO DEAL WITH THIS DANGEROUS, FAULTY ISSUE TODAY. MY CAR ONLY HAS 79,000 MILES ON IT AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES TO GET WORSE. AS THE MONTHS PROGRESS, MY ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND GO OFF INTERMITTENTLY. THE ENGINE LIGHT EVENTUALLY WOULD NOT GO OFF. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND THEY CONFIRM THAT IT WAS A BALANCE SHAFT ISSUE AND THAT IT WAS A MANUFACTURERS PROBLEM. I CALLED AND EMAILED MERCEDES BENZ FOR ASSISTANCE SINCE IT WAS NOT NEGLIGENT ON MY PART THAT THIS ISSUE OCCURRED. AFTER MAKING SEVERAL PHONES AND E-MAILING THE CEO, THEY TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO GET IT CHECKED BY A MERCEDES BENZ DEALER TO CONFIRM THE ISSUE. I MADE THE APPOINTMENT WITH THE MERCEDES BENZ DEALER IN DECEMBER 2014 AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS A BALANCE SHAFT ISSUE AND THAT IT WOULD COST AROUND $5,000 TO REPAIR. I CALLED MERCEDES BENZ BACK TO REQUEST ASSISTANCE AND THEY EXPLAINED THAT SINCE THE CAR HAD NO RECALLS AND THAT IT WAS NOT A NEW CAR, THEY WOULD PAY 10% OF THE REPAIR COST. I EXPLAINED THAT I DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS AND THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS SINCE IT IS A MANUFACTURERS PROBLEM. ZERO ISSUES WITH THIS CAR UNTIL NOW. THIS WEEK, JUNE 2013, THE CAR HAS 78,000 MILES ON IT. I PULLED UP TO A STOPLIGHT OFF THE FREEWAY, AND THE CAR STARTED SPUTTERING LIKE NEVER BEFORE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON - FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. THE CAR STALLED AND ENGINE DIED. IT RESTARTED, BUT WHEN I PRESSED THE GAS THERE WAS NO POWER, TRAFFIC WAS COMING UP THE OFF RAMP FAST, I HAD TO FLASH MY BRAKES TO GET THEM TO NOTICE SOMETHING WAS WRONG BUT IT WAS A CLOSE CALL. THE CAR SPUTTERED INTO THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY FREEWAY OVERPASS INTERSECTION WITH MY FAMILY ON BOARD AND EAGER TRAFFIC BEHIND ME. IT WAS A VERY SCARY MOMENT BECAUSE THE CAR WENT FROM COMPLETELY RELIABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY TO COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER AND INSTABILITY. I SPUTTERED BACK HOME, CREATING THE SAME DANGEROUS CONDITIONS AT EVERY INTERSECTION. I TOOK THE CAR TO A MERCEDES BENZ SHOP THE NEXT MORNING. AFTER A LOT OF TESTING IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD NEEDED TO BE PULLED TO LOOK DEEPER INTO THE ENGINE. HOURS LATER THEY FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE PLASTIC BUSHING OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WHICH BROKE AND WAS SUCKED INTO CYLINDER #4 AND #3. THIS CAUSED THE VALVES TO BEND AND COMPROMISED THE INTEGRITY OF THE CYLINDERS AND VALVES, ACCORDING TO THE MERCEDES QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN. THERE IS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE VALVES, AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT ALL THEY'RE GOING TO FIND ONCE THEY PULL THE HEADERS OFF. THE COST TO REPAIR THE CAR IS $4,400, BUT IT MAY EVEN BE HIGHER. THE CYLINDERS HAVE TO BE SENT TO A MACHINE SHOP TO SEE IF THEY HAVE ANY OTHER ISSUES AS A RESULT. WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'LL FIND. THE MECHANICS STATED THAT MERCEDES BENZ IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, THAT THOSE MOVING PLASTIC PARTS IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD ARE KNOWN TO CRACK AND CAUSE PROBLEMS AND SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN MADE OUT OF PLASTIC, BUT I DON'T SEE RECALLS ON THIS OBVIOUS ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING DEFECT. *TR

REPAIRING THIS PROBLEM IS EXTREMELY COSTLY AND THE BUYER SHOULDN'T BARE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR FAULTY PARTS. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 84,000 MILES ON IT. I WAS INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC WHO PERFORMED THE REPAIR ON MY VEHICLE THAT THEIR MB PARTS SUPPLIER STATED THAT MB IS AWARE OF THIS DEFECTIVE PLASTIC BUSHING. HOWEVER, THE PARTS SUPPLIER WAS APPARENTLY NOT PERSONALLY AWARE OF IT CAUSING THE TYPE OF EXTENSIVE DAMAGE I EXPERIENCED. THE CAR WAS INSPECTED AND AN ERROR CODE FOR THE INTERNAL SPEED SENSOR CAME UP, WHICH IS PART OF THE VALVE BODY FOR THE TRANSMISSION. MY CAR ONLY HAS 59,000 MILES ON IT. MERCEDES IS VERY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM ON 2006-2007 C230 MODELS! IN FACT, THEY ARE HAVING A DISPUTE WITH THE MANUFACTURER OF THE VALVE BODY BECAUSE IT IS POOR QUALITY AND DEFECTIVE. THE EXPLANATION WE RECEIVED (VERBAL ONLY AS THEY REFUSED TO DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM IN WRITING AFTER ASKING MULTIPLE TIMES) WAS THAT A BUSHING THAT CONTROLS THE AIR FLOW VALVES WAS WORN. THEY COULD NOT PROVIDE A REASON AS TO WHAT WOULD CAUSE THIS WEAR CONSIDERING THE BUSHING IS INTERNAL TO THE CONTROL VALVES. THEY ALSO COULD NOT TELL ME WHICH SPECIFIC SIDE THIS LEAK WAS COMING FROM. SINCE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD IS ONE LARGE COMPONENT WE WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE THING. THE CAR IS FIVE YEARS OLD SO ROUGHLY JUST OVER 12K MILES PER YEAR AND ALREADY MAJOR COMPONENTS ARE FAILING. I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY DURING MORNING RUSH HOUR WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 35 MPH. I MOVED THE CAR OFF THE HIGHWAY AND STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. HE EXPLAINED IT WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $4,000.00 TO REPAIR, HE WAS REPAIRING A VEHICLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND SHOWED ME THE WEAR ON THE TEETH WHICH CAUSE THE INBALANCE OF THE SHAFT AND THE CAMS COME OFF LINE. MANY TIMES WHEN I ENTERED TO THE FREEWAY IN A MERGE LANE, THE ACCELERATION DIDN'T WORK AT ALL AND I ALMOST GOT HIT BY THE OTHER CARS IN THE MERGE LANE. THE MECHANIC ADVISED IF CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITHOUT REPLACING BALANCE SHAFT WILL LEAD TO A BIG DANGER TO THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SINCE THE ENGINE CAN BE STOPPED ANYWHERE AND ANYTIME. REPLACING THE BALANCE SHAFT COST $6,000 (FROM THE DEALER) AND MERCEDES USA REFUSE TO COVER ANY PORTION OF THE REPAIR SINCE MY CAR EXCEEDS 50,000 MILES/4 YRS WARRANTY. I TALKED TO THE DEALER AND THE SERVICE ADVISER. THEY SAID THIS IS A COMMON KNOWN PROBLEM FOR MANY OF THE MERCEDES MODELS. IN FACT, IT WAS IN THEIR SERVICE BULLETIN SINCE 2007. THE MERCEDES CLK350 VIN [XXX]- THE PASSENGER SEAT AND DRIVER SEAT WHEN RELEASED TO ALLOW A REAR PASSENGER OUT OF THE CAR CAUSES THE HEAD REST TO AUTOMATICALLY DESCEND AND CAN TRAP THE REAR OCCUPANTS HAND IN PLACE AS IT DID WITH A 10 YEAR CHILD IN MY CAR. THE CONTROL TO RAISE THE HEADREST IS DISABLED WHEN THE SEAT IS IN THIS POSITION THEREBY NOT ALLOWING ANY METHOD TO RELEASE THE TRAPPED HAND. I SPOKE WITH MERCEDES THIS MORNING AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS HOW IT IS DESIGNED AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT BUT WOULD TELL THEIR ENGINEERS. I BOUGHT A NEW 2006 C230 ON 2/27/2006 . I WAS DRIVING THIS CAR ON THE FREEWAY AT NIGHT AND AFTER 10-15 MINUTES OF DRIVING THE TIRE ON DRIVER REAR SIDE WAS SHREDDED. I REPLACED THIS TIRE WITH THE SPARE TIRE. AFTER ALL REMAINING TIRES WERE CHECKED THAT WERE GOOD TO DRIVE...I DROVE ANOTHER 15-20 MINS AND DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE SHREDDED. AT THIS TIME I HAD TO CALL AAA AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MERCEDES DEALERSHIP IN BEVERLY HILLS. THIS DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS SOMETHING HAD IMPACTED THE WHEELS OF THE CAR AND THAT SHREDDED THE TIRES. I ALSO LOOKED AT THE WHEELS MYSELF AND I DID NOT SEE ANY DAMAGE TO THE WHEELS WHERE THEY WERE POINTING TO SAYING THERE IS SLIGHT RAISED OR INDENTATION . THEY TOLD ME MERCEDES WILL NOT COVER FOR THE WARRANTY OF THE TIRES AND WHEELS. I FEEL THAT I DID NOT DO ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY WHILE DRIVING THIS CAR TO CAUSE THIS DAMAGE AND I SHOULD NOT BE AT FAULT FOR THIS AND THAT THE MERCEDES COMPANY SHOULD COVER THIS COST AND REIMBURSE THE COST OF WHEELS AND TIRES. THE COST OF THE PARTS WAS $1050 AND I PAID $1431 IN TOTAL TO THE DEALERSHIP AT BEVERLY HILLS. ALSO THE MERCEDES LOGO ON MY NEW WHEELS THAT WAS PUT ON IS RUSTED AND DOES NOT NEW WHILE THE OLD WHEELS THAT WERE NOT REPLACED HAVE THE MERCEDES LOGO THAT LOOKS NEW. MANY NEWER CARS ARE EQUIPPED WITH BLINDING, BLUE-GREEN, HEADLIGHTS THAT ARE A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE PROHIBITED. THERE ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS. FIRST, WHEN SEEN FROM ANY ANGLE, THESE HEADLIGHTS ARE HIGHLY DISTRACTING, IN THAT THEY DRAW ONES EYES FROM THE ROAD AHEAD AND ON EITHER SIDE; THE REASON THAT THEY ARE DISTRACTING IS THAT THEY ARE OF A NOTABLY DIFFERENT COLOR AND ARE MUCH BRIGHTER THAN THE TRADITIONAL INCANDESCENT LIGHTS. SECOND, WHEN VIEWED FROM ANY ANGLE, THE LIGHT "FLARES" ABOUT ONES EYES, FORMING SPIKES THAT RADIATE OUTWARDS FROM THE LIGHT ITSELF, THEREBY OBSCURING ONE'S VIEW OF THINGS ABOVE, BELOW AND ON EITHER SIDE OF THE LIGHT ITSELF. THIRD, WHEN VIEWED FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, THE LIGHTS ARE OFTEN BLINDING, DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE ROAD IS FLAT OR HILLY, THE RESULT BEING TO OBSCURE ALMOST EVERYTHING AHEAD, ABOUT THE SAME AS TRADITIONAL INCANDESCENT LIGHTS ON "HIGH"BEAM. FOURTH, WHEN VIEWED FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION ON ROADWAYS THAT ARE NOT PERFECTLY LEVEL, THESE HEADLIGHTS ALTERNATE RAPIDLY, BACK AND FORTH, LIKE A STROBE LIGHT, BETWEEN "STANDARD" AND "BLINDING," A RESULT OF THE FACT (WHICH I ASSUME) THAT THE LIGHTS ARE VERY TIGHTLY FOCUSED, AND THE PROBLEM BEING THAT THE "FOCUSED" LIGHT UNDER THESE CONDITIONS IS REPEATEDLY FOCUSED ON THE EYES OF THE DRIVER HEADING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THE MOST HAZARDOUS ARE ITEMS THREE AND FOUR, BUT ITEM FOUR IS PARTICULARLY HAZARDOUS BECAUSE IT COMBINES THE WORST OF ALL OF THE OTHERS - BOTH DISTRACTION AND BLINDINGNESS. CLEARLY, HEADLIGHTS NEED TO BE DESIGNED TO LIGHT THE WAY AHEAD; BUT THERE ARE COMPETING GOALS, WHICH INCLUDE NOT BLINDING OTHER DRIVERS. LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS WORLD, WHAT IS GOOD FOR ONE PERSON MUST BE WEIGHED AGAINST ITS NEGATIVE IMPACTS ON OTHERS.
