The contact owns a 2010 BMW 550i Gran Turismo. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a fuel odor detected inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a smog test but failed the smog test after the fuel odor was detected. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed as a fuel leak at the connection on the high line to injectors on bank 2. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for diagnosis. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V746000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The failure mileage was 122,515.

I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO BMW AND THEY REFUSE TO PERFORM THE NECESSARY REPAIRS INCLUDED IN THE CCP MY CRANKCASE VALVES ALSO THE COOLING HOSES ALL THIS IS INCLUDED IN THE CLASS ACTION SUIT THEY CLAIM I HAVE A ENGINE LEAK. THE ENGINE IS LEAKING BECAUSE THE VALVES ARE WORN AND NEED TO BE CHANGED I NEED HELP GETTING THEM TO CONFORM TO THE CCP.

ON SUNDAY 12/03 I SUDDENLY HEARD A KNOCKING NOISE WHILE ACCELERATING AND IMMEDIATELY REACHED THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE CAR CHECKED. THE DIAGNOSIS I RECEIVED IS THAT THERE HAS BEEN A FATAL FAILURE OF BEARING THAT CAUSE THE ENGINE TO GET DAMAGED AND IN NEED TO BE REPLACED. I LOOKED UP ON THE WEB AND FOUND OUT THAT IN 2014 BMW HAD A WORLDWIDE RECALL OF 2010 5 SERIES MODELS FOR A DEFECT IN THE ENGINE WHICH WOULD HAVE GENERATED THE SAME FAILURE I HAVE EXPERIENCE, SUDDENLY, ON SUNDAY. MY CAR WAS NEVER RECALLED, BUT THE FAILURE MODE AND THE YEAR OF THE MODEL ARE STRIKINGLY SIMILAR. THE RECALL I AM REFERENCING IS 14V-176 FOR THE VANOS. THE AFFECTED 5 SERIES MODELS WERE PRODUCED BETWEEN FEBRUARY 2010 ' AUGUST 2011. MY 5 SERIES WAS MANUFACTURED ON OCTOBER 2009, THEREFORE NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. HOWEVER THE FAILURE IS IDENTICAL TO THE ONE DESCRIBED BY THE RECALL AND I FEEL THAT THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE INCLUSIVE. MY 535 HAD 130 K MILES, WHICH DO NOT WARRANT SUCH A DRASTIC FAILURE, ESPECIALLY SINCE HAS BEEN DILIGENTLY SERVICED BY THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE. LAST OIL CHANGE HAD STILL 9000 MILES TO SPARE AND WHEN THEY REPLACED THE FILTER NOTHING WAS NOTICED. SUCH A DRASTIC AND RAPID FAILURE IT IS NOT OTHERWISE EXPLAINABLE.

1. BATTERY/ALTERNATOR WHILE DRIVING CAR IT STARTED SLOWING DOWN SAYING BATTERY DISCHARGING AND FINALLY DIED ON THE ROAD. I HAD TO GET A NEW ALTERNATOR. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, MY BATTERY START DISCHARGING AGAIN AND NOW NEED A NEW BATTERY. BATTERY ONLY ONE YEAR OLD. 2. ENGINE- WITH A LITTLE OVER 81,000 MILES ENGINE WAS GETTING EXTREMLEY HOT AND COOLANT PIPES HAD TO BE REPLACED. USING COOLANT AND BURNING A QUART OF OIL EVERY 400 MILES WITH A LOT OF WHITE SMOKE. NEED VALVE STEM SEALS WHICH IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE $5,000.00. CAN'T AFFORD, SO CAR IS JUST SITTING. ANY HELP WILL BE A BLESSING.

IN MY SPECIFIC CASE, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED TOTAL ELECTRICAL POWER LOSS WHILE DRIVING AFTER 20 MILES ON HIGHWAY. ALL WARNINGS WENT OFF AND ENGINE SHUT DOWN WHILE CAR WAS MOVING. HORN, AIR BAG AND ALL STEERING WHEEL ELECTRONICS PERMANENTLY SEASED WORKING AFTER A SNAP NOISE FROMTHE STEERING COLUMN HAPPEN, DRIVER SYSTEM RESTRAIN ERROR LIGHT CAME ON. WHILE GOING IN REVERSE TO GET OUT OF PARKING SPOT THE STEERING WAS TURNED FAR LEFT TO GET INTO THE STREET. WHILE TURNING THE STEERING A NOISE THAT RESEMBLES PLASTICS BREAKING CAME FROM THE STEERING COLUMN COMPARTMENT AND CLICKING SOUND THAT STILL OCCURS TODAY WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL IS NOTICEABLE AND CONCERNING IF STEERING IS RELIABLE AND SAFE. WHEN THE ORIGINAL CRACKING NOISE OCCURRED THE COMPUTER WENT OFF WITH A DRIVER RESTRAINT SYSTEM FAILURE ERROR. SINCE THEN ALL COMPONENTS SUCH BUTTONS, HORN, CRUISE CONTROL, VOLUME, PHONE, AIR BAG ETC STOPPED WORKING. THE MOST CONCERNING COMPONENT THAT STOPPED WORKING IS THE HORN AND AIRBAG THAT OBVIOUSLY PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD AND A COMPONENT THAT IS NEEDED FOR SAFETY INSPECTION CHECKS. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 44000 MILES TOTAL AND THE COMPONENTS FAILURE CANNOT BE BLAMED TO DRIVER IMPROPER USE OF THE CAR THAT CAN BE FILED WITH INSURANCE. THE STEERING COLUMN ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS INVOLVING AIR BAGS, HORN AND OTHERS SHOULD BE RELIABLE AND STAY WORKING FOR MUCH LONGER THAN 44K MILES AND SHOULD BE A RECALL AT THE DEALERS EXPENSE. A BMW MASTER MECHANIC MENTIONED THAT THESE A REPLACEABLE COMPONENTS THAT GO INSIDE THAT STEERING COLUMN COMPARTMENT THAT ARE KNOWN FOR BREAKING AND THAT BMW HAS COME OUT WITH SEVERAL "IMPROVED VERSIONS" OF THE COMPONENT SINCE THE CAR FIRST WAS RELEASED IN 2010.

THE CAR TRAVELING BEHIND ME ALSO STOPPED TO INSPECT HIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF FLYING GLASS. THE CABIN DOOR TO THE SUNROOF HAD LUCKILY HAD BEEN CLOSED SO AS MY WIFE AND I AVOIDED THE FLYING GLASS. WHEN WE RETURNED FROM OUR TRIP I TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER, THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THE DEALER SAID THIS PART WAS NOT COVERED AND WOULD COST $3600 TO REPAIR. WE GOGGLED BMW5 SERIES EXPLODING SUNROOFS AND DISCOVERED WE WERE NOT THE ONLY ONES TO EXPERIENCE EXPLODING SUNROOFS. SURELY BMW KNOWS ABOUT THIS POTENTIALLY GRIEVOUS PROBLEM. WE CALLED BMW NORTH AMERICA AND FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE RESOLUTION DEPARTMENT. THE NEXT DAY BMW TO MY CHAGRIN WAS WILLING TO PAY 50 PERCENT OF THE REPAIR COST. I EXPECTED FULL COVERAGE. I NEEDED THE CAR BACK AND EXCEPTED OFFER VOWING NEVER TO BUY A BMW AGAIN. I EXPECTED TO BECOME WHOLE AND NOT EXPECTING BMW IGNORING THE PROBLEM THUS ENDANGERING THEIR DRIVERS FOR ECONOMIC REASONS. FACTS: -MILEAGE WHEN THE FAULT OCCURRED WAS INDICATED AT 58091KM = 36096 MILES -ODOMETER READING WHEN BROUGHT TO SHOP WAS 36184. - RECEIVED VEHICLE ON FEB 1, 2013 @ 27291 MILES. -FROM 2/1/2013 TO 9/10/2013 THERE ARE 155 WORKING DAYS. -TOTAL MILES DRIVEN UP TO 9/10/2013 WAS 8805 (36184 ? 27291). SO MY AVERAGE DAILY MILEAGE IS 56.8 MILES. -IF THE FAULT OCCURRED AT 36096 MILES THAT MEANS IT WAS LESS THAN TWO DAYS BEFORE CAR IN THE SHOP. IT WOULD BE EITHER FRIDAY 9/6/13 OR OVER THE WEEKEND OF 9/8 OR 9/9 WHICH WAS THE SECOND TIME WARNING CAME ON. -THE SYMPTOM FIRST OCCURRED AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE CAN IN SHOP. SINCE THE FAULT READING INDICATED SOME ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT WAS LEFT ON FOR 2:40 HOURS, THE WARRANTY WAS REJECTED. FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, ONE OF THE FOLLOWING EVENTS MUST OCCUR FOR THE BATTERY TO BE DRAINED FOR THAT EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. 1.THE CAR DOOR WAS LEFT OPEN FOR 2:40 HOURS BUT THE CAR KEY MUST BE IN THE VICINITY OF THE CAR 2.SOMEONE SAT IN THE CAR FOR 2:40 HOURS AND TURNED ON THE RADIO 3.SOMEHOW SOME OF THE LIGHTS OF THE CAR WERE TURNED ON FOR THIS EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME FROM WHAT I CAN TELL AND EXPERIMENTED WITH THE CAR, NONE OF THE ABOVE COULD HAVE HAPPENED. 1.IF THE CAR KEY IS NOT IN THE VICINITY OF THE CAR, NO LIGHTS OR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT WILL BE TURNED ON FOR THAT LONG PERIOD OF TIME. 2.IF THE CAR IS LOCKED THEN ALL LIGHTS ARE CUT OFF ANYWAY. 3.NO ONE SAT IN THE CAR FOR 2:40 HOURS AND NOT IN MOTION. WHILE DRIVING, APPROXIMATE SPEED OF 30 MILES PER HOUR MY CAR SLOWED DOWN AND SHOWED A SIGNAL ON THE DASH BOARD SAYING A REDUCTION IN POWER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO BMW AND WAS TOLD NOTHING COULD BE FOUND. MANAGER TOLD ME IT MAY HAVE BEEN BAD GAS. SINCE OCTOBER 22, 2012 THE VEHICLE HAS HAD THIS HAPPEN 3 MORE TIMES. EACH INCIDENT WITH THE REDUCTION IN POWER HAS OCCURRED AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND THE TERRAIN WAS DIFFERENT. EACH TIME IT IS TAKEN TO BMW I WAS TOLD THEY CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM. THE TECHNICIAN SUGGESTED I TURN THE VEHICLE ON AND OFF ABOUT TEN TIMES AFTER PUTTING FUEL IN IT. THAT DID NOT, NOR HAS NOT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A 2010 BMW 550I GT WITH THE SPORT PACKAGE. IT HAS THE STAR SPOKE WHEELS AND RUN FLAT TIRES. THE TIRES AND WHEELS ARE ORIGINAL FROM THE FACTORY. THE LOW TIRE INDICATOR CAME ON SO WE TOOK THE TIRE IN TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. THE RIGHT REAR TIRE HAD AN INDUSTRIAL STAPLE IN THE MIDDLE THE TREAD. BMW WOULD NOT REPAIR THE TIRE BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT PATCH A RUN FLAT TIRE. WE WERE THEREFORE FORCED TO PURCHASE A NEW TIRE. THE TIRE HAD 17K MILES ON IT AND STILL HAD A LOT OF TREAD. BMW ORDERED A NEW TIRE AND PUT IT ON. WHEN WE CAME TO PICK UP THE CAR THE TIRE WAS FLAT. BMW TOOK IT BACK AND FOUND THAT THE WHEEL WAS CRACKED. WE DID NOTHING TO CRACK THIS WHEEL. WE HAD IT LOOKED AT BY A TIRE SHOP AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING DONE TO THIS WHEEL. THE WHEEL DOESN'T HAVE A SCRATCH ON IT. IT JUST CRACKED UNDER NORMAL USE. I HAVE REPORTED THIS TO BMW AND THEY JUST SAY ITS NOT COVERED. I KNOW ITS NOT COVERED, BUT THEY ARE NOT EVEN INTERESTED ENOUGH TO SEND AN ENGINEER OUT TO LOOK AT IT. MY HUSBAND REALLY WANTED ANOTHER BMW AND WHEN HE WAS LOOKING AT BUYING THE 2010 HE WAS TOLD ALL THE PROBLEMS INCLUDING THE GAS FUMES HAD BEEN RESOLVED. NOT SO. THE CAR HAS BEEN BACK TO SERVICE TWICE FOR THE GAS FUMES AND NO ONE CAN SHED ANY LIGHT ON THE SITUATION. WHEN THIS HAPPENS YOU CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR AS THE FUMES WILL KNOCK YOU OUT. THE CAR HAS TO SIT ON THE DRIVEWAY AND AIR OUT FOR A FEW DAYS. YOU CAN'T PARK IN THE GARAGE AS THE GAS FUMES ENTER THE HOUSE. FOR A CAR OF THIS CALIBER IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. PLUS IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

(RECALL STARTED OCT 18, 2010) THEY NEVER PERFORMED THE RECALL REPAIR BEFORE DELIVERING THE VEHICLE, NEVER INFORMED US OF A RECALL AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, AND WE WERE NEVER INFORMED OF A RECALL BY THIS DEALER OR BY BMW AT ANY TIME AFTERWARDS. WE ONLY FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL WHEN WE VISITED ANOTHER DEALER IN LATE JUNE, 8 MONTHS LATER, AND, AS A COURTESY, THEY CHECKED THE KEY FOB INFORMATION AND FOUND THERE WAS AN OUTSTANDING RECALL. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE IN ON JUNE 27 TO HAVE THE REPAIR DONE. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE DID NOT EXPERIENCE A FAILURE IN THE INTERIM! AS A SAFETY ENGINEER AND INVESTIGATOR I FIND THIS TO BE INEXCUSABLE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM HAPPENED. THE FIRST TIME THE CAR LOST POWER WHEN REVS WENT UP ABOVE 3.5K RPM AND RECOVERED AS SOON AS REVS FELL BELOW THIS RANGE. THIS ALMOST RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT SINCE THE DRIVER BEHIND ME WAS TAKEN BY SURPRISE WITH THE ABRUPT REDUCTION IN SPEED. I TOOK THE CAR TO BMW FOR SERVICE AND THEY REPORTED IT HAD BEEN FIXED. THE SECOND INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING AT 60MPH ON THE LEFTMOST LANE OF A THREE LANE HIGHWAY. THE CAR COMPLETELY LOST POWER AND A WARNING WAS DISPLAYED INDICATING: "ENGINE MALFUNCTION, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO CONTINUE AT REDUCED POWER". THERE WAS NO POWER AT ALL. THE ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY OFF, CAR SWITCHED TO NEUTRAL. I TURNED THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON SINCE THERE WAS A LOT OF COMMUTING TRAFFIC AND THE QUICK REDUCTION IN SPEED COULD HAVE AGAIN RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I MANAGED TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER ON THE RIGHT AND CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. CAR WAS TOWED AND IS BEING SERVICED BY BMW. SEARCHING THE WEB I FOUND NUMEROUS REFERENCES TO THIS EXACT PROBLEM REPORTED AS EARLY AS 2008. SOME OF THE REPORTS INDICATE THAT THIS ISSUE HAPPENED A FEW TIMES TO THE SAME CAR EVEN AFTER THE ISSUE WAS DECLARED RESOLVED. I AM DUMBFOUNDED BY THE FACT THAT A RECALL HASN'T BEEN ISSUED. AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATES WITH ADULT PASSENGER FIRMLY BELTED INTO PASSENGER SEAT. LIGHT REMAINS ILLUMINATED FOR PERIODS WHICH VARY FROM 5 MINUTES TO 30 MINUTES. THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL IF THIS IS A DEFECTIVE LIGHT ONLY OR IF THE AIR BAG IS INOPERATIVE. AN ADDITIONAL SAFETY CONCERN IS THAT BMW DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES ARE NOT ABLE TO DETECT THIS FAILURE. BMW REFUSES TO CORRECT THE DEFECT.
