WHILE DRIVING UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS, 35-50 MPH, DRY, GOOD, SMOOTH, STRAIGHT ROAD CONDITIONS, I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT ALMOST TO THE FLOOR BEFORE THE BRAKES STARTED BEING APPLIED. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED OF A RECALL FOR PRIOR MODEL YEARS (18V916000) AND SUBSEQUENT MODEL YEARS OF MY VEHICLE DUE TO ABS PROBLEMS. PART OF THE FIX IS TO REPLACE THE DOT3 FACTORY-SPECIFIED BRAKE FLUID SPECIFIED FOR MY VEHICLE WITH DOT4 BRAKE FLUID DUE TO CORROSION OF BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS. I HAVE DETERMINED THAT IT IS IN FACT AN ABS PROBLEM, AS I CAN NOW SKID THE TIRES DURING HEAVY BRAKING, AND THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE PUMP DOES NOT ACTIVATE. THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELS ABOUT 75 PERCENT OF THE DISTANCE TO THE FLOOR BEFORE ANY BRAKING OF THE VEHICLE OCCURS.

I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO TWO DEALERSHIPS, THEY CHECK THE CAR AND CAN'T REPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND SAY NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THE 2009 NISSAN MURANO HAS HAD A RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN 18V916000) WITH THE IDENTICAL SYMPTOMS MY VEHICLES IS EXHIBITING. THE PROBLEM IS THE ABS ACTUATOR. MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN 2009 WITH THE DEFAULT PARTS, YET IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. THIS FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM CAN BE FATAL IF NOT ADDRESSED. THE COST OF THE REPAIRS IS IN EXCESS OF $2,000 AND NISSAN SHOULD PAY FOR THE REPAIR FOR THE FAULTY ABS ACTUATOR. I NOW HAVE A CAR PARKED IN THE GARAGE BECAUSE I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR AND HAVE TO WAIT TO SAVE UP TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED.

AFTER AN ABS ACTIVATION EVENT, DURING SUBSEQUENT BRAKE PEDAL PRESSES, THERE IS NO BRAKING EFFECT FOR THE FIRST ~80% OF BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL. ALL BRAKING OCCURS IN THE FINAL 20% OF PEDAL TRAVEL DISTANCE. THIS HAS BEEN OBSERVED NUMEROUS TIMES OVER APPROXIMATELY THE LAST 12 MONTHS. STEPS: - VEHICLE IS IN MOTION (SPEED USUALLY GREATER THAN 35MPH) - BRAKE IS DEPRESSED - ABS ENGAGES SUCCESSFULLY (DUE TO SOME ROAD CONDITION CAUSING VEHICLE TO SLIDE), BRAKE PEDAL FEEL IS NORMAL - BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED - BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED AGAIN, WITHOUT ABS ACTIVATION. OBSERVED PROBLEM: FOR THE FIRST 80% OF BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL DISTANCE, THERE IS NO BRAKING EFFECT. - PEDAL FEEL MAY RETURN TO NORMAL WITHIN A FEW SECONDS. IN SOME CASES, PEDAL FEEL HAS TAKEN UP TO 30 MINUTES TO RETURN TO NORMAL. IN SEVERAL CASES, THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND RE-STARTED IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET BRAKE PEDAL FEEL TO RETURN TO NORMAL (THIS USUALLY SEEMED TO WORK). INITIALLY THIS WAS DIAGNOSED BY A THIRD-PARTY MECHANIC, WHO RECOMMENDED THAT THE VEHICLE BE TAKEN TO A NISSAN-CERTIFIED SERVICE CENTER FOR REPAIR. IT WAS THIS MECHANIC AND THE CUSTOMER'S OPINION THAT THIS IS THE SAME DEFECT THAT 2009 MURANOS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR (NHTSA CAMPAIGN 18V916000), DUE TO SIMILARITY IN MODEL YEAR, PARTS AND SYMPTOMS. NISSAN SERVICE CENTER REPRODUCED THE PROBLEM AND INDICATED THE ABS ACTUATOR AS THE SUSPECT ROOT CAUSE. HAVE CONTACTED NISSAN CUSTOMER CARE WITH THIS INFORMATION - THEY STATED THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR IT, NISSAN WILL OFFER NO GOODWILL OR ASSISTANCE FOR THIS ISSUE. I TOOK MY 2010 NISSAN MURANO LE AWD TO MAUS NISSAN OF NEW PORT RICHEY, FL BECAUSE THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT WAS FLASHING. THIS WELL MAINTAINED, GARAGE KEPT VEHICLE WITH 74500 MILES, 95% OF SERVICE/MAINTENANCE DONE BY NISSAN, WAS IN PRISTINE CONDITION, SINGLE DRIVER,NO ACCIDENTS, AND RARELY EVEN A PASSENGER. WHEN I RETURNED 3 DAYS LATER, I WAS TOLD THE LIGHT WAS STILL FLASHING EVEN THOUGH THEY REPLACED THE "K88201AAOE SENSOR SIDE AIRBAG CENTER". I WAS BILLED $1840.81 FOR THIS REPAIR THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I WAS THEN TOLD THE DIAGNOSTICS SAID THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE THE "SEAT OCCUPANT SENSOR" FOR AN ADDITIONAL $4210.81 BECAUSE THE PART WAS INTEGRATED INTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SO THE WHOLE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT HAD TO BE REPLACED! I WAS THEN ADVISED TO CALL NISSAN'S CORPORATE CUSTOMER CARE AT 1 800 NISSAN1. MY MAUS SERVICE CONSULTANT SAID SHE HAD SEEN CUSTOMERS WITH "130000 MILES AND A BLOWN TRANSMISSION" AND CUSTOMER CARE HAD COVERED THE REPAIR. SHE ALSO SAID THAT THEY WOULD LIKELY REIMBURSE MY $1840.81 SINCE THE REPAIR DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. I CALLED CUSTOMER CARE AND DETAILED MY SITUATION. A WEEK LATER THEY CALLED TO TELL ME THAT MY REQUEST HAD BEEN DENIED. I REACHED OUT TO MAUS NISSAN VIA THEIR FACEBOOK AND WEB PAGES AS WELL AS A YELP AND GOOGLE REVIEWS. ATTACHED ARE COPIES OF MY INVOICE, ADDITIONAL REPAIR ESTIMATE AND THE ONLY NON AUTOMATED REPLY FROM WITH MAUS NISSAN.

THE COST OF THE REPAIRS IS IN EXCESS OF $2000 AND SHOULD BE AT THE EXPENSE OF NISSAN FOR INSTALLING FAULTY COMPONENTS. THIS FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM CAN BE FATAL IF NOT ADDRESSED, ALL MURANO'S WITH FAULTY BRAKE COMPONENTS NEED TO BE RECALLED BEFORE IT COSTS THE LIVES OF INNOCENT PARTIES. THE MECHANIC INDICATED I NEED NEW BRAKE PADS ON THE REAR WHEELS (THE FRONT BRAKES HAD BEEN REWORKED A YEAR PRIOR). AFTER THE REPAIRS THE BRAKES WORKED NORMALLY FOR A FEW WEEKS THEN STARTED GETTING SOFT AGAIN, ESPECIALLY DURING RAIN; THIS CONTINUED FOR 2 MONTHS. IN JANUARY, 2019 I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A NISSAN DEALER TO HAVE THEM TROUBLESHOOT THE ISSUE. THEY FOUND A PROBLEM WITH THE PREVIOUS REAR WHEEL BRAKE REPAIR. I HAD NISSAN REPAIR THE REAR BRAKES AND BLEED THE SYSTEM. EVERYTHING WAS GOOD FOR 3 WEEKS THEN WHILE MAKING A TURN THE FRONT WHEELS SLIPPED AND THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD TO BE PUSHED TO THE FLOOR TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I LATER TESTED THE BRAKES (IN A SAFE LOCATION) BY "SLAMMING" ON THE BRAKES WHILE MOVING 30 MPH. THE BRAKES DID HOLD BUT MY FOOT FELT LIKE IT WAS ON THE FLOOR. THE SOFTNESS LASTED 2 DAYS BUT SEEMED TO GET BETTER WHEN I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL NUMEROUS TIMES WHILE THE ENGINE WAS OFF. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED AS OF THIS DATE. I DID SOME INVESTIGATING AND SEE THAT YOUR ADMINISTRATION CONDUCTED AN INVESTIGATION ON 2009 MURANO'S FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. AT 65,000 MILES MY MURANO REQUIRED THE CVT TRANSMISSION, THE TRANSFER CASE, THE RT FRONT AXEL (AND HEAD GASKETS) TO BE REPLACED. AT THE TIME THE CVT TRANSMISSION WAS UNDER WARRANTY. NOW THE MURANO HAS 150,000 MILES AND THE CVT TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN! THIS WILL BE THE THIRD CVT TRANSMISSION IN 150,000 MILES AND OF COURSE THE NISSAN 120,000 MILE WARRANTY WHICH STARTED WHEN THE CAR WAS NEW NO LONGER COVERS THE CVT TRANSMISSION EVEN THOUGH THE CURRENT UNIT ONLY HAS 85,000 MILES OF USE. WHY HASN'T NISSAN BEEN FORCED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WITH THE CVT TRANSMISSION? (I ALSO HAVE A 2013 VERSA WITH A CVT TRANSMISSION THAT HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 65,000 MILES). BAD DESIGN THAT IS PUTTING CUSTOMERS AT RISK OF INJURY WHEN THE CTV TRANSMISSIONS FAIL AND DESTROY OTHER COMPONENTS IN THE DRIVE TRAIN. CURRENT PROBLEM: WHEN AT A FULL STOP THE CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE. THE GAS CAN GO TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR DOESN'T MOVE. THE DELAY IN ACCELERATION IS INTERMITTENT AND CAN LAST FROM LESS THAN A SECOND TO SEVERAL MINUTES. A SHUT DOWN AND RESTART OF THE CAR MAY BE NEEDED TO GET THE CAR TO ACCELERATE. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS ON LARGE ROADS IN THE NORTHERN VA TRAFFIC. NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE THROUGH A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND BLOCKING MULTIPLE LANES OF TRAFFIC IN NORTHERN VA IS A VERY DANGEROUS PLACE TO BE.

ON MARCH 15, 2018, THE RIGHT REAR OF CAR MADE A METAL SNAPPING SOUND AND BEGAN DRIVING POORLY SO I TOOK THE CAR TO AN ASE CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO FOUND "THE REAR FRAME HAS ROTTED OUT WHERE THE TORSION ARM MOUNTS TO THE CROSSMEMBER". I WAS TOLD THE SUB-FRAME SHOWS SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE RUST AND CORROSION SUCH THAT, THE CAR NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUT UP FOR SALE BY THE NISSAN DEALER IN 2016 AS THE ROT AND CORROSION OF THE FRAME IS A SAFETY CONCERN. THE MECHANIC INDICATED THAT WHEN THE CAR IS ON A LIFT, THE CORROSION, ROT AND EXCESSIVE RUST IS EVIDENT AND SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN MISSED BY THE MECHANIC THE NISSAN DEALER'S USED TO ENSURE THE CAR WAS SAFE TO SELL. I TWICE CONTACTED THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION AND TO SEEK A SOLUTION. I SENT THE USED CAR MANAGER A PICTURE OF THE UNDERCARRIAGE THAT IS INCLUDED BELOW. THE DEALER SAID THE RUST MUST HAVE DEVELOPED SINCE I TOOK OWNERSHIP OF THE CAR AND THAT THEY WEREN'T RESPONSIBLE. OTHERWISE I WOULD'VE BEEN COVERED IN TEMPERED GLASS. I PULLED OFF THE FREEWAY AS QUICKLY AND SAFELY AS I COULD, INTO A GAS STATION PARKING LOT TO EVALUATE THE SITUATION. UPON INSPECTION, I NOTICED THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY A 2' X 1' HOLE IN THE CENTER OF MY FRONT SUNROOM. SHARDS OF GLASS WERE EVERYWHERE, AND THE INTERIOR NETTING WAS SHREDDED. I WAS ABLE TO GET SOME PLASTIC AND DUCT TAPE TO COVER THE WINDOW ENOUGH SO THAT I COULD GET HOME. IT WAS ALSO A WINDY DAY.

IF THE DOORS LOCKED PROPERLY THIS PROVIDES A MORE SECURE ENVIRONMENT FOR THIS TYPE OF SCENARIO. 2. NISSAN KNOWING THERE IS A SECURITY PROBLEM WITH THEIR LOCKING MECHANISM AND NOT RECALLING THEM FOR SAFETY CONCERN IS NEGLIGENT. SOMEONE CAN MURDERED DUE TO A DOOR THAT DIDN'T LOCK, ALTHOUGH THE DRIVER PUSHED THE LOCK BUTTON AND HEARD THE LOCKING NOISE. REMEMBER, IN THIS CASE THERE'S NO OBVIOUS INDICATION THE DOOR ISN'T LOCKED UNLESS SOMEONE WALKS UP AND OPENS IT FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE DRIVE "THINKS" THE DOOR IS LOCKED, WHEN IN REALITY IT'S AN "OPEN DOOR" FOR CARJACKING OR ROBBERY.THIS FAILURE IS AN INTERMITANCE OF OPERATION. SOMETIMES THE DOORS LOCK OK, OTHER TIMES THEY DON'T. IN ADDITION, SOMETIMES THE DOORS UNLOCK OK, OTHER TIMES THEY DON'T. 3. IN EMERGENCIES IT'S IMPORTANT TO BE ABLE TO UNLOCK DOORS QUICKLY. SINCE 99% OF THE TIME WE ALL USE THE BUTTON TO LOCK AND UNLOCK DOORS, USING THE MANUAL LOCKING LEVER IS UNFAMILIAR. AND THE MURANO'S DESIGN IS SUCH THAT IT'S NOT EASY TO COMPREHEND IF IT'S NOT YOUR CAR, FOR INSTANCE A RENTAL CAR. I CAN EASILY UNDERSTAND HOW SOME PEOPLE WOULD BE CONFUSED HOW UNLOCK A DOOR USING THE MANUAL LEVEL IN AN EMERGENCY WHEN THEY VIRTUALLY HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH IT. IN EMERGENCIES EVERY SECOND COUNTS. THE LOCKING/UNLOCKING SOLENOID MALFUNCTIONING IS CLEARLY A HIGH RISK IN EMERGENCY SCENARIOS. SOME PEOPLE WHO CANNOT AFFORD THE $1600 TO HAVE ALL THE SOLENOIDS REPLACED (AS QUOTED BY DEALERS) WILL FORGO GETTING THEM FIXED, PUTTING THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS AT RISK WITH THE ABOVE MISHAP EXAMPLES. AT THAT TIME, IT WAS TOO LATE AND I SLID THROUGH AN INTERSECTION AND ENDED UP IN A DITCH (WITH MY WIFE AND INFANT SON IN THE CAR). LUCKILY, EVERYONE ELSE WAS STOPPED ON EITHER SIDE OF THE INTERSECTION, AND NO DAMAGE WAS DONE TO OUR CAR OR ANYONE ELSE'S PROPERTY. THE CASE WAS COMPLETELY BROKEN AS CAUSED BY AN INTERNAL GEAR FAILURE. THIS HAPPENED ON MAY 14, 2015. COST TO REPAIR WAS $3800. COMMENTS ONLINE INDICATE THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE THAT NISSAN FAILS TO ADMIT OR WARRANTY. THEY HAVE INCREASED TRANSMISSION WARRANTY TO $120K BUT NOT THE TRANSFER CASE. THE ONLY WAY I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET THE DOOR OPEN IS BY LOWERING THE WINDOW AND PULLING THE OUTSIDE HANDLE. IT'S BECOMING MORE FREQUENT AND APPEARS TO BE RELATED TO THE OUTSIDE HANDLE NOT CLOSING ALL THE WAY AFTER GETTING INTO THE VEHICLE. I HAVE NOTICED THAT SOMETIMES AFTER ENTERING THE VEHICLE AND DRIVING AWAY THERE WILL BE A THUD IN THE DOOR AND I BELIEVE IT IS THE OUTSIDE HANDLE FLOPPING IN TO THE CLOSED POSITION. THE OUTSIDE HANDLE ALSO SEEMS TO BE SEPARATING SO THAT AN SECTION CLOSEST TO THE CAR IS NOT FIRMLY ATTACHED TO THE REST OF THE HANDLE, BUT IF YOU HOLD PRESSURE AND FORCE THE TWO SECTIONS TO STAY TOGETHER THEN THERE IS NO THUD LATER. NO MATTER HOW FAR THE GAS PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, THE CAR WILL SLOWLY ACCELERATE FROM 0 TO 15 MI/HR IN EXCESS OF 10 SECONDS! ONCE THE CAR IS MOVING ABOVE 15 MI/SEC, NORMAL ACCELERATION RESUMES. THIS PROBLEM IS SO PREVALENT, NISSAN MURANO OWNER'S CALL THIS "LIMP MODE". IF YOU SEARCH GOOGLE.COM FOR NISSAN CVT ISSUE OR LIMP MODE, YOU WILL GET THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS. NISSAN KNOWS THIS IS AN ISSUE BUT HAVE NOT FIGURED OUT EXACTLY WHAT IS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. THEIR GENIUS IDEA IS TO EXTEND THE CVT WARRANTY TO 100K MILES INSTEAD OF FIXING THE SAFETY ISSUE. THIS HAS OCCURRED TO ME TWO TIMES ONCE TRAVELING FROM WASHINGTON DC TO NYC IN APRIL, 2010 AND DC TO OUTER BANKS, NC IN JULY BOTH UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS (HIGH TEMP AND BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC).
