MY 2010 HIGHLANDER HYBRID HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY AND BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP ASSEMBLY. CUSTOMER SUPPORT SERVICE IS EXPIRED ON DEC 31, 2020 WHICH IS NOT FAIR. THIS PROBLEM CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND CAUSE. IT WAS LUCKY THAT MY WIFE MANAGED TO STOP THE VEHICLE WHEN BRAKE DOES NOT WORK AND ALL THE LIGHTS ON. MY WIFE NOW COULD NOT DRIVE BECAUSE SHE IS TOO SCARED TO DRIVE ANYMORE. THIS ISSUE RAISED A BIG ENOUGH ISSUE FOR TOYOTA TO EXTEND COVERAGE. IT NEEDS TO BE A RECALL, AS THE TOTAL REPAIR COSTS EXCEED $3500 IN MOST CASES FOR A PART TOYOTA HAS ESSENTIALLY ADMITTED WAS DEFECTED.

Summary

While driving several passengers, vehicle brakes failed, dash lights came on. Brake booster pump and actuator failed according to Master Mechanic. Vehicle available for inspection. Brake failure sudden reduction is stopping distance unexpected nearly causing collision to other vehicle and possible injury or death to others. Toyota aware of issue (customer support bulletin (zKc) which expired 12/31/21 without notifying me of issue unless NHTSA call for SAFETY RECALL. Problem is same exact as my 2010 PRIUS which was safety rcalled NHTSA Code 13V235000.without any brake problem indicators. Toyota refuses to repair unless NHTSA calls for a SAFETY RECALL beyond 12/31/21 expired date of (csp bulletin zKc. I experienced what I thought was slight & brief dash light which went back to normal immediately. First appeared Sept 1, 2021.

In June passenger airbag light was sending error messages to the system. The dealer(service department) reported the car needed a specific part for the repair. Control Panel - Toyota (84010-0E050-E0). The part was ordered and we waited. After several weeks it became clear the part was not coming. Reached out to both dealership and Toyota and was told today it would not be available until the end of the year. This is a non-functioning air bag. Toyota has advised me to use an after market replacement, if I can find and they will install(Auto Nation-Libertyville). The second point was to essentially be careful driving... The car is dangerous and Toyota does not seem to care!

Summary

The brake actuator assembly and brake booster pump assembly had a recall on it but my truck was not having problems then. I noticed that when I start braking, the truck speeds up. Then all the light on the dash board came on. When my vehicle started having problems I call and they told me that the recall had expired 3 months earlier for my vehicle and it was up to the owner to have it fixed. I didn't get a notice and I wasn't aware of such recall so why am I liable for the repairs. I need help with this please.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HYDRAULIC LIFTGATE WOULD NOT OPEN AS NEEDED ELECTRICALLY AND MANUALLY. THE CONTACT HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO OPENED THE LIFTGATE WITH A MECHANICAL TOOL. THE MECHANIC THEN UNSCREWED AN ARM PIECE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE LIFTGATE WHICH ALLOWED HIM TO OPEN THE LIFTGATE MANUALLY. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 170,000.

Summary

2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE PARKED IN GARAGE OF RESIDENCE, DESTROYING THE HIGHLANDER AND THE CAR PARKED ADJACENT TO IT, ALONG WITH MOST OF THE HOUSE. PRIOR TO THE FIRE, THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE. THE HIGHLANDER WAS STATIONARY, WITH THE IGNITION OFF AND PARKED IN THE GARAGE. A SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION INCLUDING INSPECTING BURN PATTERNS AND THERMAL DAMAGE INDICATED THE FIRE ORIGINATED AT THE FRONT OF THE TOYOTA HIGHLANDER ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHERE THE FUSE PANEL, BATTERY AND STARTER/SOLENOID WERE LOCATED. ALL THREE SOURCES OF IGNITION REMAIN ENERGIZED WITH THE IGNITION OFF. THE UPPER PORTION OF THE PLASTIC HOUSING ON THE FUSE PANEL AND BATTERY HAD MELTED EXPOSING THE RECEIVERS FOR THE FUSES AND PLATES INSIDE THE BATTERY. THE ENDS OF THE RECEIVERS HAD ALLOYING ON THE RECEIVERS, BUT NO FAILURES WERE NOTED ON FUSE PANEL OR BATTERY. EXTREME THERMAL DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED ON THE CONNECTOR END OF THE SOLENOID WHERE MOST OF THE FACING HAD MELTED OR WAS CONSUMED. LINES OF DEMARCATION FROM EXTREME HEAT WAS OBSERVED ON THE REMAINING SECTION OF THE SOLENOID FACING. THE CABLE CONNECTING THE BATTERY TO THE SOLENOID WAS NOT CONNECTED TO THE SOLENOID DUE TO THE EXTREME DAMAGED TO THE SOLENOID. THE TERMINAL CONNECTOR ON THE CABLE SUSTAINED ARCING AND/OR MELTING OF THE METAL TERMINAL. THE CONCLUSIONS WERE THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A FAILED SOLENOID ATTACHED TO THE STARTER ON THE 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. LAB ANALYSIS OF THE STARTER/SOLENOID REVEALED FAILURE AT THE CONNECTION END OF THE SOLENOID WITH BEADING AND ARCING ON CONTACTS INSIDE THE SOLENOID.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILLAGE WAS 129,000.

THE HYBRID INVERTER FAILED WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A RED LIGHT. A LOUD CLUNK WAS HEARD AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING BUT CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND HAD TO BE PUSHED OUT OF THE ROAD. "CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM" WARNING FLASHED. CAR WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY AT 9 YEARS, 117K MILES (WARRANTY IS 8 YEARS, 110K MILES). THE PREVIOUS RECALLS FOR THE HYBRID INVERTER HAD BEEN COMPLETED ~3 YEARS AGO AND SO THE RECALL ALSO WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR. THE QUOTED COST OF THE REPAIR IS ~$11K.

WAS TOLD VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITHOUT REPAIR, INTERNAL PRESSURE LOSS COULD PREVENT CAR FROM STOPPING IN A PANIC SITUATION. CAMELBACK TOYOTA FIRST QUOTED ME $2,500 FOR THE REPAIR' BUT THAT FIRST REPAIR WAS ONLY TO REPLACE THE ACCUMULATOR AND THE PUMP. THE NEXT DAY, THE BRAKE MALFUNCTION LIGHTS CAME ON, AND NOW THEY'RE QUOTING ME ANOTHER $2,064 TO REPLACE THE ACTUATOR. AFTER DOING A GOOGLE SEARCH ON THIS PROBLEM, I DISCOVERED THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR HIGHLANDER....I HAVE ATTACHED A FILE THAT CONTAINS SCREEN SHOTS OF OTHERS WITH THIS ISSUE. I STOPPED CUTTING AND PASTING AFTER 17 PAGES. THIS AS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT COMPROMISES THE QUALITY OF THE BATTERY AND THERE REALLY COULD BE A DOOR AJAR WHEN YOU THINK THE WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH IS JUST FROM THE FAULTY HATCH SENSOR. THIS ISSUE HAS LEFT MY CHILDREN AND I WITH A DRAINED BATTERY ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, WHICH IS NOT ONLY INCONVENIENT BUT A SAFETY ISSUE GIVEN THE RISKS INVOLVED WITH BEING STRANDED IN UNFAMILIAR TOWNS. THE MALFUNCTION AND INOPERABILITY OF OUR TRUNK DOOR LEAVES MY FAMILY AT RISK OF DANGER. HOWEVER, I WAS QUOTED $3,600 TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE BY A THIRD PARTY BODY SHOP THAT COPELAND TOYOTA USES. HOWEVER, THE REPAIR EXPENSES SHOULD NOT BE PAID BY MY FAMILY BUT RATHER TOYOTA SINCE THE ISSUE IS A DIRECT RESULT OF FAULTY MANUFACTURING. WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, IT WAS OVER $1,000 TO HAVE THE ACTUATORS REPAIRED, SINCE THEY HAD "GONE BAD". AFTER RESEARCHING A BIT, I NOTICED SEVERAL MAKES, MODELS AND YEARS OF TOYOTA VEHICLES ARE ALSO HAVING THESE PROBLEMS. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAD $50,000 MILES AT MOST WHEN ALL THIS STARTED, AND I MAINTAIN THE SUGGESTED MAINTENANCE. I THINK TOYOTA IS WELL AWARE OF THE FAULTY PARTS THEY HAVE INSTALLED BUT DON'T WANT TO MAKE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS DUE TO THE COST. SAID REAR DOOR NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED BECAUSE REAR HATCH WOULD NOT CLOSE CORRECTLY. HOWEVER, REAR HATCH HAS ALWAYS CLOSED AND STILL CLOSED. TOYOTA COULD NOT GUARANTEE A NEW HATCH OR REPAIRED BODY WORK WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. WARNING LIGHTS PROBLEM STARTED MONTHS BEFORE REAR DOOR ISSUE. I HAVE SUBSEQUENTLY CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND REPORTED SAME (GIVEN CASE NUMBER [XXX]) AND THEM REFERRED ME TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP (CHARLES BARKER TOYOTA IN VIRGINIA BEACH, VA). THIS DEALERSHIP CONTINUES TO "STRUGGLE" TO GET THE INFORMATION FROM THE TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS IN CA TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE AIRBAGS SHOULD BE REPLACED (THAT IS, IF TAKATA REPLACEMENTS WERE INSTALLED AFTER THE WRECK) TO ENSURE THE OCCUPANTS SAFETY. IN JANUARY OF 2013, I TOOK MY HIGHLANDER INTO A DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO DIAGNOSE A PROBLEM WITH MY DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT AUTOMATIC LOCK, WHICH HAD COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING AT AROUND 46,000 MILES. THIS MEANS I HAD TO PHYSICALLY PRESS THE LOCK AS NOT EVEN THE KEY WOULD WORK. I HAD TO OPEN THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR, CRAWL ACROSS THE SEAT, & UNLOCK THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR IN ORDER TO GET IN MY CAR. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR, WHICH WENT OUT, & IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. RATHER THAN PAYING $575 AT THE DEALER, I FOUND A MECHANIC THAT ORDERED THE PART & REPLACED THE ACTUATOR FOR LESS THAN $400. LESS THAN THREE MONTHS LATER, AT JUST OVER 50,000 MILES & ONLY 2.5 YEARS OF OWNING THE CAR, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE ACTUATOR WENT OUT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I HAD SOME WORDS WITH THE DEALER, & THEY AGREED TO DO A ONE-TIME "COURTESY" FIX, REPLACING IT AT NO COST. OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, BOTH OF THE REAR DOOR ACTUATORS WENT OUT. NOT WANTING TO SPEND $800+ TO REPLACE THE ACTUATORS, I DECIDED TO LIVE WITH RISK & ANNOYANCE THIS CAUSED, HOPING THERE'D SOON BE A RECALL. WELL, HERE WE ARE IN MARCH 2015, & AT 87,000 MILES, GUESS WHAT? THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE ACTUATOR IS GOING OUT AGAIN. APPARENTLY THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FROM MY RESEARCH AND MY DISCUSSION WITH THE DEALER. MY 2010 HIGHLANDER WITH 40K MILES HAS A POWER REAR DOOR. THE HINGES HOLDING THE DOOR ARE SPACED TOO FAR WHICH CAUSES STRESS ON THE MECHANICAL ARM AND BOLT THAT ATTACH TO THE DOOR. MY WIFE WAS IN THE VEHICLE AND PRESSED THE BUTTON TO CLOSE THE REAR POWER DOOR WHEN SHE HEARD A LOUD "POP". THE BOLT ATTACHING THE "ARM" TO THE DOOR STRIPPED AND CAME OUT OF THE DOOR. THE DEALER SAID MY FULL COVERAGE "BUMPER TO BUMPER" WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THIS AND GAVE ME THE PHONE NUMBER TO TOYOTA. I SPOKE WITH TOYOTA AND THEY INVESTIGATED THE ISSUE WITH THE DEALER. TOYOTA CAME BACK AND OFFERED TO SPLIT THE COST 50%. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE IN MY OPINION AS IT IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURING ISSUE AS WELL AS A SAFETY CONCERN. IF MY WIFE HAD BEEN BEHIND THE VEHICLE AND PRESSED THE POWER DOOR BUTTON, SHE COULD HAVE BEEN STRUCK IN THE FACE WITH THE METAL BAR WHEN IT PULLED ITSELF OUT OF THE DOOR. THEY SCAN TEST CLEAN ALL DTC PERFORMED INITIALIZATION AND CALIBRATION OF THE LINEAR SOLENOID VALVE. THEY ROAD TESTED THE VEHICLE AND CONFIRMED REPAIR, NO LIGHTS ON, AT A COST OF $227 PLUS TAX. TODAY THE 28 OF OCTOBER AS I TURNED MY CAR ON I FACE THE SAME PROBLEM ALL THE BRAKE LIGHTS, ABS, WARNING, AND DISPLAY TEXT INDICATING MALFUNCTION, TO STOP THE CAR. I AGAIN CALLED FOR TOW WENT TO TOYOTA OF HILLSIDE IN NJ, EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED. WAS ASK WHY I HAD THE CAR TOW AFTER TELLING THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ABOUT THE BRAKES. I'D STOPPED ON THE RESIDENTIAL STREET TO LET A CAR PASS. AFTER THE CAR PASSED, I ATTEMPTED TO PULL UP ALONG THE CURB TO PARK, BUT THE CAR ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND AND THE STEERING DID NOT SEEM TO RESPOND. THE SPACE BETWEEN ACCELERATION AND IMPACT WAS 10-15 FEET. IT'S LIKE THE CAR HAD A MIND OF ITS OWN, AND I HAD NO CONTROL. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT WAS SMASHED, THE HOOD WAS SMASHED, FRONT BUMPER AND PASSENGER SIDE FENDER WERE ALSO SMASHED. THE ONLY THING THAT STOPPED THE CAR WAS THE TREE. ONCE IT STOPPED, I SIMPLY TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND THEY TOLD ME TO TOW IT TO SAN FRANCISCO TOYOTA FOR MECHANICAL INSPECTION. I CALLED SAN FRANCISCO TOYOTA AND SAID THAT I WAS TOWING MY CAR DOWN AND WAS TOLD THEY'D BE WAITING FOR IT. LATER THAT DAY I RECEIVED A CALL FROM DON'S AUTOBODY TELLING ME THEY HAD MY CAR. I CONFIRMED WITH SF TOYOTA AND THEY SAID THEY SENT THE CAR THERE AND THE AUTO BODY WORK HAD TO BE DONE PRIOR TO A MECHANICAL INSPECTION. ON 4/15/13, I WAS INFORMED THE CAR HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND WAS SENT TO SF TOYOTA. I REPEATEDLY CALLED SF TOYOTA TO SEE IF THEY HAD FOUND ANY MECHANICAL DEFECTS. ON 4/16/13, I WAS CONTACTED BY DON'S AUTOBODY AND TOLD THAT TOYOTA REFUSED TO INSPECT THE CAR. SINCE WE DON'T KNOW IF THE CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE, THE PERSON FROM THE AUTOBODY SHOP SUGGESTED WE CALL TOYOTA USA. TOYOTA USA OPENED A CASE AND HAS ENLISTED BILL FROM ENGINEERING ANALYTICS TO INSPECT THE CAR. BILL PLANS TO INSPECT THE CAR ON 4/30/13. HE WILL COLLECT DATA AND SEND IT TO TOYOTA. TOYOTA SAID THEY'LL REVIEW THE DATA AND WILL MAIL US THE RESULTS WITHIN 30 BUSINESS DAYS. WHEN WE EXPRESSED CONCERN THAT TOYOTA WAITED 6 WEEKS TO LOOK AT OUR CAR (WHICH THE AUTOBODY SAID THEY'VE DRIVEN), TOYOTA HAD NO COMMENT. *TR

THIS MALFUNCTION TRIPS A WARNING IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM, AND AFFECTS OPERABILITY OF THE BRAKES. RECENTLY ON JUNE 18, 2012 WHILE DRIVING ON A LOCAL STREET AT 25 MPH, A VEHICLE PASSED A STOP SIGN CROSSING IN FRONT OF ME NECESSITATING I BRAKE HARD TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. WHILE AN ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED, IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THIS A BRAKE MALFUNCTION WARNING CAME ON, AND THE BRAKE SYSTEM STOPPED OPERATING NORMALLY. THE DEALER FOUND THAT DUE TO THE HARD BRAKING, THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME MISALIGNED, AND THE BRAKE LOAD SENSOR FAILED AGAIN. THE PROBLEM OCCURS EVERY TIME IT IS DRIVEN AND IS EASILY DUPLICATED. MY LOCAL DEALER SERVICE HAD THE CAR FOR OVER 3 WEEKS AND WAS WORKING CLOSELY WITH TOYOTA CORP TECHNICIANS. THEY DROVE ANOTHER BRAND NEW HIGHLANDER FROM THEIR LOT FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES AND TOLD US THAT THE OTHER HIGHLANDER HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. WE WERE TOLD THAT TOYOTA MIGHT ISSUE A TECHNICAL SAFETY BULLETIN (TSB) ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND A PROPOSED SOLUTION, WE WERE THEN ADVISED THAT WE SHOULD ASK ABOUT A TSB EVERY TIME WE BRING THE CAR IN FOR ROUTINE SERVICE. ON JAN.26,2010, I WAS STOPPED BEHIND CARS AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Highlander hybrid vehicles manufactured February 16, 2005, through July 29, 2010; and model year 2006-2008 Lexus RX400h vehicles manufactured February 23, 2005, through December 2, 2008. The Intelligent Power Module (IPM) inside the inverter module may contain transistors that have higher operating temperatures than the solder can support and the transistors may be heat damaged by the solder. If this occurs, various warning lamps, including the malfunction indicator lamp, slip indicator light, brake system warning light, and master warning light, will be illuminated on the instrument panel.
