The contact owns a 2006 Lincoln Town Car. The contact stated that while in his driveway, the manifold plate detached into the steering shaft however, he was able to remove the part. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the local dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000. The VIN was not available.

Summary

When braking to stop there was sudden acceleration that braking could not control resulting in hitting the rear of a stopped car in front of me. This has happened in the past with no warning. It usually happens when braking, but not always. I have had the car to a Ford dealership twice with this problem. They claim they can find nothing wrong with the car. I took it into them today after this incident. They would not even look at the car. Said that Ford had no bulletins on this and said that I was on mu own. I see online that there has been a class action lawsuit against Ford about this. This could be a life-threatening problem. What do I do?

WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY, THERE WAS AN UNCOMMANDED MOVEMENT OF THE FOOT PEDAL ADJUSTMENT. THE PEDALS RETRACTED AWAY FROM MY FEET TO THE MAXIMUM STOP FURTHEST AWAY, WHICH PUT THEM OUT OF MY REACH AND RENDERED IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO ACTIVATE THE BRAKES OR ACCELERATOR PEDALS. THIS NEARLY CAUSED A LOSS OF CONTROL ACCIDENT, HAD I NOT DISENGAGED MY SEAT BELT AND SLID FORWARD UNDER THE DASH TO REACH THE PEDALS TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I WAS SUBSEQUENTLY ABLE TO USE THE CONTROL SWITCH TO MOVE THE PEDALS BACK INTO POSITION.

MY 2006 LINCOLN TOWN CAR ONLY HAS 45,000 MILES ON IT AND IS KEPT IN A GARAGE. THE FIRST INCIDENT WAS WITH MY FAMILY ON VACATION IN SOUTH DAKOTA. THE GAS PEDAL STUCK DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN ACCELERATING BY ITSELF. WE WERE ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE VEHICLE SPEED REACHED 85 MPH. THE SECOND TIME LESS THAN A YEAR LATER MY HUSBAND WAS PULLING INTO OUR DRIVEWAY AND IT DID THE SAME THING HE TURNED OFF INTO THE GRASS TO AVOID HITTING OUR CHILDREN AND GARAGE. BOTH TIMES HE HAD TO REACH DOWN AND MANUALLY PULL UP THE GAS PEDAL. EVEN HITTING THE BRAKES WOULDN'T STOP IT.

AFTER A COUPLE MINUTES, THE AIRBAG LIGHT WENT FROM FLASHING TO SOLID AND THE CAR BEGAN A SERIES OF 5 BEEPS AND REPEATED THIS SERIES OF BEEPS 5 TIMES. A LOCAL AUTO SHOP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE DRIVER SIDE SEATBELT PRE-TENSIONER AND SAID IT WOULD BE AROUND $1,000 TO REPLACE, GIVE OR TAKE A COUPLE HUNDRED. THE SHOP ADVISED IF THE REPAIR WAS NOT COMPLETED, THE AIRBAGS WOULDN'T DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT. AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE, THIS SAFETY ISSUE APPEARS TO BE A COMMON OCCURRENCE AND HAS NOT YET BEEN RECALLED. THIS ISSUE OCCURS IMMEDIATELY WHEN STARTING THE CAR AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT STAYS ILLUMINATED FOR THE ENTIRE TRIP (THE SERIES OF BEEPING SEEMS TO STOP AFTER REPEATING THE SERIES 5 TIMES).

AT ABOUT THE 83,500 MILEAGE MARK AN AIRBAG DASH INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND A SERIES OF 5 CHIMES PLAYED. THE DASHBOARD INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES. THE CHIMES WOULD PLAY PERIODICALLY WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY AIRBAG SENSOR IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THAT WAS FIXED FOR ABOUT $780. ABOUT 1-WEEK LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME I WAS TOLD BY THE SAME DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT IT WAS A SEPARATE ISSUE AND WAS THE MAIN COMPUTER CONTROL MODULE. I'M STILL UNCLEAR WHETHER IT IS THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG THAT WILL NOT, OR MAY NOT, WORK OR IF IT IS BOTH OF THEM. I IMAGINE THAT THE SIDE AIR BAGS ARE STILL FUNCTIONAL. I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPAIR THIS AGAIN FOR $800 AND I HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING IF THEY EVER REPAIRED IT CORRECTLY THE 1ST TIME. IT COULD BE THAT THE PROBLEM ALWAYS WAS THE MAIN COMPUTER MODULE. IN ANY CASE, I'M NOT FIXING IT AND I CAN'T SELL IT AS IS. A GOOGLE SEARCH REVEALS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH LINCOLN TOWN CARS FROM THAT ERA. I'M STILL PERPLEXED WHY THIS HASN'T BEEN A RECALL ISSUE ALREADY.

COST TO REPAIR IS EXORBITANT, NEARLY HALF THE VALUE OF THE CAR AND IS NOT GUARANTEED TO WORK IS LAST. THE AIRBAGS WILL LIKELY NOT WORTH IN THE EVENT OF ACCIDENT BUT NO WAY TO TELL UNLESS THERE IS AN ACCIDENT. SERIOUS FAULT REGARDING REQUIRED SAFETY EQUIPMENT WITH THIS MAKE/MODEL YEAR. MILEAGE IS 170,100. ALSO, THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOORBOARD, ESPECIAL IN BACKSEAT BECOME SATURATED WHEN IT RAINS. FLOOR PLUGS ARE INTACT, THE WATER IS ENTERING FROM POOR DESIGN FEATURE WHERE THE WINDSHIELD/ENGINE MEET AND SUPPOSEDLY SLOW FOR WATER TO BE CHANNELED AWAY FROM ENGINE TO GROUND BUT IS ACTUALLY CHANNELLING ALONG THE SIDE INTO THE PASSENGER CABIN FOOTWELL. AGAIN, THIS DESIGN FLAW IS A KNOWN ISSUE FROM MANUFACTURER. THIS IS A HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE, ESPECIALLY IN WARM CLIMATES DUE TO MOLD GROWING AS A RESULT OF WATER POOLING IN CABIN. AS THIS CAR WAS GARAGED KEPT AND NOT USED OFTEN UNTIL THE PAST 6 MONTHS, THE WATER ISSUE WASNT KNOWN UNTIL FIRST RAIN THIS SPRING, 2016. CAR WAS IN OPEN AIR, UNCOVERED DRIVEWAY AND NOT IN USE FOR 2 WEEKS AFTER SAID RAIN. WHEN OWNER OPENED CAR DOOR, SHE WAS HIT WITH OVERWHELMING STENCH OF MOLD. SHE LOCATED THE SOURCE AND WATER HAD VISIBLY SATURATED FLOOR, RUG AND PADDING UNDERNEATH. BLACK AND GREEN MOLD HAD GROWN EXTENSIVELY IN BACKSEAT PASSENGER FLOORBOARD AND UNDER FRONT PASSENGER SEAT.

IT IS STILL LIKE NEW AND SHOULD NOT BE HAVING THOSE PROBLEMS. I SEE FROM ALL THE COMPLAINTS THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE 2004. IT WAS, AS THE COMPLETE UPPER AND LOWER SHAFT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED DURING THE REPAIR. THE UNPREDICTABLE LOCKING OF THE STEERING WHEEL POSES A SERIOUS INJURY/DEATH RISK. ALL VEHICLES PART OF THE INITIAL RECALL SHOULD BE INSPECTED TO INSURE THE REPAIR WAS DON COMPLETELY AND CORRECTLY. IF I HAD BEEN OUT ON THE ROAD WHEN THIS OCCURED INSTEAD OF MY LOCAL TRAFFIC AREA I THINK IT COULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY ISSUE. THE SECOND TIME, THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND GASKET WERE REPLACED. THE THIRD TIME THE SAME RELAY WAS REPLACED AS WELL AS THE WIRING HARNESS. I BELIEVE THAT THE CAR IS SO DANGEROUS. I AM NOT WILLING TO LET ANYONE ELSE DRIVE IT. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR PROXIMATELY 54 YEARS. THIS HAS INCLUDED ALL KINDS OF CARS INCLUDING RACING SPORTS CARS AND BIG LUXURY CARS AND ALL TYPES OF EMERGENCY VEHICLES (INCLUDING FIRE TRUCKS AND AMBULANCES). I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE PLACEMENT OF THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS NEW CAR HAS ADJUSTABLE PEDALS. I DO DRIVE WITH MY HEAL ON THE FLOOR BOARDS AND ROCK MY FOOT BACK AND FORTH FROM THE GAS TO BRAKE TO STOP. I HAD JUST A FEW HUNDRED MILES ON MY NEW CAR AND AT A STOP LIGHT FOUND I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR. I ALMOST RAN INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. FORTUNATELY, I SHIFTED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BUT NOTICED THE ENGINE WAS RACING WHEN I CAME HOME I ALMOST RAN A STOP SIGN SINCE I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR WITHOUT SHIFTING IT INTO NEUTRAL. AND AFTER FINDING NOTHING WRONG THEY INSTALLED A COMPUTER WITH A BUTTON BY MY SEAT SO THAT IF THAT HAPPENED AGAIN I WOULD PUSH THE BUTTON AND THE COMPUTER WOULD REMEMBER THE LAST TWENTY SECONDS OF WHAT HAPPENED. BUT BY NOW I WAS USED TO THE PROBLEM AND WOULD PUSH THE BUTTON SLOWLY LIFT MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND I NOTICED THAT I WAS PROBABLY PUSHING ON THE ACCELERATORS AT THE SAME TIME I WAS PUSHING ON THE BRAKE. BASICALLY IF I PUSHED REAL HARD ON THE BRAKE MY FOOT WOULD GO DOWN AND PUSH ON THE ACCELERATOR. THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY THE DEALERSHIP WHEN THEY LOOKED AT THE COMPUTER. A CALL TO THE LINCOLN HEADQUARTERS TOOK DOWN ALL THIS INFORMATION FOR FUTURE REFERENCE AND TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO WORK THROUGH THE DEALERSHIP. I HAVE NOTED THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED WITH OTHER DRIVERS OF 2005 TOWN CARS. I HAVE NOTICED IN THE NEWS MORE AND MORE FOLKS WHO HAVE DRIVEN INTO WALLS AND STATED THE CAUSE IS THAT THEY STEPPED ON THE GAS INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE. *JB

I WAS STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TO 2,500 RPMS. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR WITH THE BRAKE AND AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, BUT EVEN AFTER STOPPING THE CAR IT WAS STILL RUNNING AT 2,500 RPMS FOR ANOTHER COUPLE OF SECONDS BEFORE THEN RETURNING TO IDLE AT 500RPM. THIS HAPPENED TWO MORE TIMES THAT DAY AND IT'S VERY SCARY TO SAY THE LEAST. EACH TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS BRAKING THE CAR (LUCKILY) AND WAS ABLE TO BRAKE HARDER AND STOP THE CAR. Ford is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Ford Crown Victoria (including Crown Victoria Police Interceptors), Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car vehicles. The affected vehicles are currently registered or were originally sold in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Severe corrosion can seize the lower intermediate shaft which may cause the upper intermediate shaft to collapse and the steering column lower bearing to separate.
