The contact owns a 2010 BMW 528I. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine. The vehicle independently decelerated. The contact pulled over to the side of the roadway. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle however, the vehicle would not restart. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that there were two bolts missing from the camshaft which caused the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 155,000.

WHEN THIS HAPPENS I HAVE NO REAL CONTROL TO STEER THE WHEEL, NO PRIOR WARNING OR ISSUES WITH THE CAR TO INDICATE IT WOULD STALL. IT IS EXTREMELY TRAUMATIZING. TRAUMATIZING! MESSAGE OF "FUEL PUMP MALFUNCTION. MODERATE DRIVING POSSIBLE". CAR STALLS WHILE IN MOTION WHETHER IT IS 20MPH OR 65MPH. INITIAL MALFUNCTION IN JULY WAS AFTER 1HR OF DRIVING THEN SEVERAL TIMES AFTER THAT PERIODICALLY AS THE CAR ISN'T DRIVEN OFTEN DUE TO STAY AT HOME RESTRICTIONS. THE ISSUE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED AT TWO AUTO MECHANIC SHOPS, IN FACT BY THE TIME THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED, THE CAR STARTED AND WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN ONTO THE TRUCK. THERE IS NO PATTERN OF DRIVING BEHAVIOR OR MESSAGES BETWEEN FAILURE / STALL AND AS MONTHS WENT ON, THE TIME BETWEEN STALL AND INABILITY TO START THE CAR SHORTENED FROM DRIVING1HR TO DRIVING 10 MINUTES. BMW OF THE MAIN LINE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, FUEL FILTER AND STALL AND ERROR ISSUE REMAINS. WIRING TO FUEL PUMP ISSUE POSSIBLE. THERE ARE SEVERAL OPEN COMPLAINTS ON THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. I HAD THE CAR SERVICED BY A MECHANIC BECAUSE I HAD CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FAULTS. WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT WAS REPLACED. SPARK PLUGS AND COPS WERE REPLACED. SOME OF THE FUEL INJECTORS WERE ALSO REPLACED. MECHANIC ASKED ME TO DRIVE THE CAR FOR 100 MILES TO SEE IF ANY CHECK ENGINE ISSUES WILL REAPPEAR. THE VEHICLE FIRST BEGAN STATING IT HAD LOW OIL PRESSURE AND WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL, IT WOULD CONTINUE TO JUST STOP AT 15%. I THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND THE INDICATOR WENT AWAY FOR THE LOW OIL PRESSURE. I DROVE ABOUT 10 MORE MILES AND DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION APPEARED AND I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE MECHANIC. ENGINE WAS SEIZED. WHAT WAS FOUND IN THE ENGINE WAS "SHARDS OF METAL". MANY PEOPLE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE 5 SERIES BMW ENGINES. IT HAS HAPPENED AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND HAS CAUSED ME TO GET OFF THE ROAD AND GET THE CAR TOWED. I HAVE SPENT SO FAR OVER 6,000 DOLLARS ON PUMPS . NOW THE CAR IS BACK IN THE SHOP AND I AM TOLD THAT I AM STARING AT ANOTHER BIG BILL. THIS HAS BEEN AN ON GOING PROBLEM FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF. BMW HAS GIVEN ME ONE EXCUSE AFTER THE OTHER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO NALLEY BMW OF DECATUR DEALER, LOCATED AT 1606 CHURCH ST, DECATUR, GA 30033, (404) 994-4329, FOR THE STALLING FAILURE AND IT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V746000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.

AT THE SAME TIME THE ENGINE RPM BEGAN SURGING CAUSING THE BRAKES TO LOSE THEIR EFFECTIVENESS GIVING A FEELING FOR THE DRIVER OF LACK OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND THE FEAR OF HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE. I SPEAK WITH EXPERIENCE BECAUSE I MET MY WIFE AT A SHOPPING CENTER AND SWITCHED CARS WITH HER, AND CAREFULLY DRIVING THE DAMAGED CAR HOME. UNFORTUNATELY, BECAUSE OF THE VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR, 2500 DOLLARS, PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE IS NOT A GOOD OPTION.

ON SUNDAY 12/03 I SUDDENLY HEARD A KNOCKING NOISE WHILE ACCELERATING AND IMMEDIATELY REACHED THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE CAR CHECKED. THE DIAGNOSIS I RECEIVED IS THAT THERE HAS BEEN A FATAL FAILURE OF BEARING THAT CAUSE THE ENGINE TO GET DAMAGED AND IN NEED TO BE REPLACED. I LOOKED UP ON THE WEB AND FOUND OUT THAT IN 2014 BMW HAD A WORLDWIDE RECALL OF 2010 5 SERIES MODELS FOR A DEFECT IN THE ENGINE WHICH WOULD HAVE GENERATED THE SAME FAILURE I HAVE EXPERIENCE, SUDDENLY, ON SUNDAY. MY CAR WAS NEVER RECALLED, BUT THE FAILURE MODE AND THE YEAR OF THE MODEL ARE STRIKINGLY SIMILAR. THE RECALL I AM REFERENCING IS 14V-176 FOR THE VANOS. THE AFFECTED 5 SERIES MODELS WERE PRODUCED BETWEEN FEBRUARY 2010 ' AUGUST 2011. MY 5 SERIES WAS MANUFACTURED ON OCTOBER 2009, THEREFORE NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. HOWEVER THE FAILURE IS IDENTICAL TO THE ONE DESCRIBED BY THE RECALL AND I FEEL THAT THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE INCLUSIVE. MY 535 HAD 130 K MILES, WHICH DO NOT WARRANT SUCH A DRASTIC FAILURE, ESPECIALLY SINCE HAS BEEN DILIGENTLY SERVICED BY THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE. LAST OIL CHANGE HAD STILL 9000 MILES TO SPARE AND WHEN THEY REPLACED THE FILTER NOTHING WAS NOTICED. SUCH A DRASTIC AND RAPID FAILURE IT IS NOT OTHERWISE EXPLAINABLE.

SINCE THEN ALL COMPONENTS SUCH BUTTONS, HORN, CRUISE CONTROL, VOLUME, PHONE, AIR BAG ETC STOPPED WORKING. THE MOST CONCERNING COMPONENT THAT STOPPED WORKING IS THE HORN AND AIRBAG THAT OBVIOUSLY PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD AND A COMPONENT THAT IS NEEDED FOR SAFETY INSPECTION CHECKS. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 44000 MILES TOTAL AND THE COMPONENTS FAILURE CANNOT BE BLAMED TO DRIVER IMPROPER USE OF THE CAR THAT CAN BE FILED WITH INSURANCE. THE STEERING COLUMN ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS INVOLVING AIR BAGS, HORN AND OTHERS SHOULD BE RELIABLE AND STAY WORKING FOR MUCH LONGER THAN 44K MILES AND SHOULD BE A RECALL AT THE DEALERS EXPENSE. FLAMES SHOT THROUGH HOOD AT MIDDLE OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT BY WINDSHIELD AND REAR 1/3 OF THE MIDDLE OF THE HOOD WITH INTENSE SMOKE. IMMEDIATEL REACTION WAS TO PUT IN DRIVE AND MOVED FOREWORD TO GET AWAY FROM BUILDING TO GET OUT OF DOOR AS ENGINE DIED, WE SCRAMBLED OUT OF VEHICLE. 2 EMPLOYEES IMMEDIATELY ASSISTED WITH FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, BUT ENGINE COMPARTMENT QUICKLY ENGULFED 1ST IN THE MIDDLE HOOD THEN LEFT HOOD AND EVENTUALLY THROUGH THE WHEELWELL. I HAVE ALL SERVICE RECORDS, AND HAVE HAD ALL REQUIRED REPAIRS, RECALLS AND MAINTENANCE PERFORMED EXCLUSIVELY AT BMW DEALERSHIP. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD NOT JUST CATCH FIRE AND BURN FOR NO APPARENT REASON AND WITHOUT AND WARNING LIGHTS OR INDICATORS. CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE HERE THAT REQUIRES FURTHER INVESTIGATION. I'M REALLY LUCKY THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND THAT THE CAR WAS STATIONARY AND NOT IN MY GARAGE, OR GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. THIS TIP CRACKED AND BROKE (NO IDEA WHY), LEAKING AND POOLING GASOLINE INSIDE THE CAR, DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH THE PASSENGER SEAT AND FILLING THE CAR WITH HIGHLY COMBUSTIBLE FUMES. SO MUCH SO THAT THE MECHANIC I TOOK THIS CAR TO, WOULD NOT LET ME DRIVE IT OUT OF THERE. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP. BMW CUSTOMER RELATIONS HAD ME LEAVE THIS CAR FOR FIVE DAYS AT A BMW DEALERSHIP WHILE THEY WENT THROUGH THEIR PROCESS. HOWEVER, SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO RE-START WERE NOT SUCCESSFUL, AND THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE PUSHED TO A SAFE LOCATION. PRIOR TO THE ENGINE FAILURE, I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 35 MPH ON A 2-LANE DIVIDE ROADWAY, WHERE CONSTRUCTION BARRICADES REPLACED THE SHOULDER. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED JUST AROUND MIDNIGHT, AND THERE WAS VERY LITTLE TRAFFIC, SO WE WERE SPARED CERTAIN CATASTROPHE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO MY HOME, AND ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON, WE WERE ABLE TO DRIVE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FROM THERE. FOR THE NEXT 30+ DAYS, VARIOUS FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM COMPONENTS WERE SERVICED AND/OR REPLACED INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING: HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL PUMP REPLACED; LOW-PRESSURE FUEL PUMP REPLACED; FUEL INJECTORS FLUSHED, IGNITION COILS AND SPARK PLUGS REPLACED. AFTER EACH OF THOSE "FIXES", THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO US, AND SHUT DOWN AGAIN ON THE ROAD AND IN TRAFFIC WITHIN 2 DAYS. THEREFORE, WHEN THE ACTUATOR MALFUNCTIONS, THE ONLY WAY TO UNLOCK THE DOOR AND GET OUT OF THE CAR IS BY PRESSING THE UNLOCK BUTTON WHICH IS ON THE MAIN CONTROL PANEL. RISK: IF I AM IN AN ACCIDENT WITH A PASSENGER SITTING IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR AND GET OUT OF THE CAR. I NOTICED A SMELL OF FUEL EACH TIME MY WIFE PARKED HER CAR INSIDE OUR GARAGE. HER CAR FOR DUE A SERVICE SO I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR A FULL SERVICE. THE MECHANIC CALLED AND ASKED IF WE HAD BEEN SMELLING FUEL INSIDE OR AROUND THE VEHICLE. HE THEN EXPLAINED THAT HE SUSPECTED IT WAS ORIGINATING FROM UNDERNEATH THE REAR SEAT. HE LATER CONTACTED ME TO EXPLAIN THAT THE PLASTIC TUBE LOCATED ON TOP OF THE IN-TANK ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY HAD DEVELOPED A CRACK AND WAS ALLOWING FUEL TO SPRAY OUT ON TOP OF THE ASSEMBLY, WHICH WAS ALLOWING FUEL AND FUMES TO BUILD-UP IN-AND-AROUND THE VEHICLE. HE RECOMMENDED WE REPLACE IT IMMEDIATELY DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS. WHEN I WENT TO PICKUP THE VEHICLE, HE SHOWED ME THE CRACK IN THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY, AND EXPLAINED THAT HE HAD NEVER SEEN ONE CRACK LIKE THAT. TAKING THE VEHICLE IN FOR MAINTENANCE AND FINDING THE PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY AT THE TIME THAT WE DID, I BELIEVE, WAS A DISASTER AVOIDED. WE ARE PLANNING A TRIP OUT OF TOWN, AND WILL LEAVE THE VEHICLE IN OUR GARAGE FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 DAYS. OUR HOME GAS (OPEN FLAMED) HOT WATER HEATER IS LOCATED INSIDE OUR GARAGE. SO MY AVERAGE DAILY MILEAGE IS 56.8 MILES. -IF THE FAULT OCCURRED AT 36096 MILES THAT MEANS IT WAS LESS THAN TWO DAYS BEFORE CAR IN THE SHOP. THE CAR STOPPED, JERKED AND THEN I HIT A CURB AND WHEN I RIGHTED THE CAR, I PRESSED DOWN ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE CAR ACCELLERATED TO A HIGH SPEED. WE HAD IT LOOKED AT BY A TIRE SHOP AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING DONE TO THIS WHEEL. THE WHEEL DOESN'T HAVE A SCRATCH ON IT. IT JUST CRACKED UNDER NORMAL USE. THE CAR COMPLETELY LOST POWER AND A WARNING WAS DISPLAYED INDICATING: "ENGINE MALFUNCTION, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO CONTINUE AT REDUCED POWER". THERE WAS NO POWER AT ALL. THE ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY OFF, CAR SWITCHED TO NEUTRAL. I TURNED THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON SINCE THERE WAS A LOT OF COMMUTING TRAFFIC AND THE QUICK REDUCTION IN SPEED COULD HAVE AGAIN RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I MANAGED TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER ON THE RIGHT AND CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. CAR WAS TOWED AND IS BEING SERVICED BY BMW. I EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF MY PDC(PARKING DISTANCE CONTROL) SYSTEM. THE SYSTEM FAILED TO OPERATE AND I SCRAPED A WOODEN POLE AS A RESULT OF THIS FAILURE. I WAS LOOKING BEHIND ME, AS I WAS BACKING UP, THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO GO ON WHEN REVERSE GEAR IS ON, BUT IT FAILED TO EMPLOY. MY VEHICLE IS A BMW 2010 528I. THIS IS MY FIFTH BMW 5 SERIES AND SINCE THE I-DRIVE THERE HAVE BEEN VARIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR ;HOWEVER THE PDC SYSTEM IN MY PREVIOUS BMW 2007 OPERATED CONSISTENTLY AS INTENDED EVERY TIME. THE SYSTEM IN MY CURRENT VEHICLE OPERATED CONSISTENTLY UNTIL MARCH 30TH , WHEN IT FAILED TO EMPLOY AND I HAD THE SMALL ACCIDENT. FORTUNATELY IT WAS JUST A WOODEN POLE AND NOT A DOG OR SMALL CHILD THAT WAS HIT. THE REASON I PAY FOR THIS SYSTEM IS BECAUSE IT IMPROVES THE LINE OF VISION OF THE DRIVER BY SHOWING ITEMS OUT OF MIRROR AND SIGHTLINE THEREFORE IMPROVING SAFETY. HOWEVER, BMW (ALTHOUGH THEY AGREED TO PAY FOR MY REPAIR) CLAIMS THAT THE SYSTEM IS JUST FINE. FOR DAYS AFTER THE INCIDENT I WATCHED THE SCREEN EACH TIME I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND SOMETIMES THE BMW LOGO WOULD SIT ON THE SCREEN FOR 2 TO 3 MINUTES, SOMETIMES THE ACCEPT GEAR SCREEN WOULD COME ON, SOMETIME THE PDC (WHICH IS THE ONLY ONE THAT SHOULD COME ON). THERE ARE ANECDOTAL STORIES ON LINE OF OTHER DRIVERS HAVING THE SAME FAILURE OF THIS SYSTEM. BMW INSISTS THAT THE INCONSISTENCY IN PERFORMANCE IS THE WAY THE PDC OPERATES DEPENDING ON WHAT THE LAST COMPUTER FUNCTION WAS WHEN YOU SHUT OFF THE CAR. THIS IS ABSURD. I BELIEVE AN INVESTIGATION IS NECESSARY INTO THE MALFUNCTION OF THIS SYSTEM TO PREVENT MORE SERIOUS INJURY ACCIDENTS. SINCE THE REPAIR THE PDC NOW ONCE AGAIN COMES UP IMMEDIATELY WHEN I GO INTO REVERSE YET THE CLAIM NOT TO HAVE ADJUSTED ANYTHING ON THE COMPUTER. THE MODEL 528 I IS NOT ON YOUR LIST SO I MUST MARK 535I WHICH IS THE CLOSEST MODEL YOU HAVE LISTED BUT NOT THE SAME. *TR

OUR 2010 BMW 535 XI EXPERIENCED A FAILED FUEL PUMP. THE CAR IS WAS PURCHASED NEW 4 MONTH PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE CAR HAD A TOTAL ~3100 MILES WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED, THE CAR LOST ALL POWER INCLUDING THE POWER STEERING WHICH CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AS THE CAR WAS IN MOTION WITH LITTLE ABILITY TO STEER IT TO SAFETY. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP WHERE THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW UNIT. *TR

THE CONTACT REFUSED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS PARKED AT HIS HOME AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,299. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 14,000.

FUEL PUMP ON BMW 535I-2010 HAS FAILED TWICE IN 60 DAYS ON LOW MILEAGE CAR. SAFETY ISSUE OCCURS BECAUSE CAR IMMEDIATELY LOSES POWER WITH NO WARNING. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WE WERE IN A SHOPPING CENTER GARAGE SO WE WERE GOING SLOWLY. SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED WE WERE ON THE 101 HEADING EAST AT HIGH SPEED ON AN INCLINE. LOST POWER AND LUCKILY WERE ABLE TO MOVE OVER TO THE SHOULDER WITH NO INCIDENT. WE WERE INFORMED BY DEALER THAT THIS HAS BEEN A CONTINUING PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. THEY HAVE REPLACED IT TWICE. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THEY HAVE REDESIGNED THE FUEL PUMP AND HOPEFULLY THIS TIME IT WILL WORK. I GOOGLED SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND FOUND THAT THERE WERE A NUMBER OF PEOPLE REPORTING THE "SAFETY" ISSUE OF LOSING POWER RAPIDLY. *TR
