Summary

Hyundai has had this recall #197 open since 2014 and still does not have a solution? I just got another letter on 7-22-21 saying the same thing that they have been saying for seven years with zero resolution yet in place. I finally took the time to read the other complaints about electrical problems and the car seizing up nd being dead and this is exactly what is happening to my 2010 Hyundai Veracruz as I write this. How can this ongoing problem not be addressed and fixed by Hyundai for over 7 years now! What is the NHTSA doing about this? I now am looking at a seriously expensive repair for this problem because Hyundai simply is ignoring all of the complaints about this dangerous situation. The local dealerships I call don't want to touch it until the remedy is available or want us to pay for it and try and recover the cost later. This is unacceptable and I want to know what this government agency NHTSA is doing about it. Hyundai customer service is of no real help. They just advise to get it fixed and hope for a remedy later, but this type of problem is truly dangerous and I do not want my family put in jeopardy of an accident due to the car going dead as it has done twice so far at my home. Please make Hyundai solve this problem now and actively reach out to the owners of these vehicles with a solution that will cost nothing to the owners. I am on social security and cannot afford to put out approximately $1,000 and hope to get it back someday from Hyundai. I feel Hyundai is allowing this problem to go on due to not wanting to spend the money to fix this problem while they hope that it just goes away. Please do something NOW!!!

This vehicle has had multiple problems with the valve cover gasket since we purchased it. In 2015 we had the alternator and valve cover gasket replaced per the recall. The next year in 2016 we had to replace the alternator and valve cover gasket AGAIN, as the gasket was again leaking. In November of 2020 Hyundai admitted they were aware there was still problems with some gaskets, including with our car as we received a notice in the mail about a pending recall. In the last 7 months I have received 3 notices, but they all say that no repair has been implemented as of this time. This week we had to take our car in for the yearly required inspections in PA, and again our gasket is leaking. To pass inspection we had to replace it again, for the 3rd time. I called Hyundai and was told that I should have it done and submit my receipt for reimbursement because as of now there still is no fix. It is unimaginable to me that a company as big as Hyundai can be aware of a problem like this for more than 6 years and not come up with a permanent fix.

RE: NHTSA Recall Number 20V-705. The engine value cover gasket leaks oil onto the alternator. My engine has been smoking for six months (January 2021-present). This problem was not repaired correctly under a previous recall in 2014. In 2016 the problem persisted and my car shut off unexpectedly, causing me to stop in the high speed lane of the Massachusetts Turnpike, nearly resulting in a major accident and fatality. The value gasket and alternator was replaced the day after the incident but the problem has emerged again. I have received two notices from Hyundai in last few months under recall 197 stating that a "remedy is being prepared" following the NHTSA recall order of November 2020, but to date no remedy has been noticed. Hyundai customer service suggests that I pay for the repair myself at the dealer and seek reimbursement from Hyundai America myself but I lack funds to do so. As stated, the engine is smoking, the check engine light is on, and I fear for my family's safety. This vehicle is needed for transportation to work and to purchase essentials. Hyundai's response to this issue has not been timely. By this complaint, I am respectfully requesting the NHTSA to order Hyundai to directly reimburse my local dealer for this critical repair so as to remedy this dangerous situation. Yes, available for inspection. - The safety of our family was put at risk since we were left stranded at the airport on a late, hot Sunday with a broken car, & a two year old. -The vehicle was inspected by our car shop at C & R, Tire: 602-493-5258 17434 N Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix, AZ - The problem has been confirmed by the the important safety recalls we have received in the mail regarding Oil Leak on Alternator. - All maintenance up to date. Hello, My husband and I bought a 2010 Hyunday, Veracruz in 2018 before the arrival of our first son. It has been our first family car. Last year we began to receive important safety recall notices (three total). We didn't think anything of it since the vehicle was working just fine and we keep up to date with the maintenance of the vehicle. But then in the Fall of 2020 our car troubles began relating to oil leaks. I called the Hyundai dealership for help and was turned away, saying "there was no current remedy".  Our first bill came out to over $1,200 this past Fall (2020). It was a significant amount of money but we were hopeful that the issues had been resolved at C & R tire shop. Less than 6 months later we were at our car shop again due to oil issues and having to make another significant payment of $1,560.17 on 3/02/2021. At this point we felt very discouraged but once again were hopeful that the car would run well after that. However, we were wrong.  On Sunday, April 11th our family of three: My husband, two-year-old son, and I went to the airport to pick up a friend. While we were waiting for her arrival all of the lights in our dashboard lit up, the car died, and we were left stranded at the airport with no A/C and no way to get home. I ended up having to take an Uber with my son home and my husband spent hours at the airport trying to find a toe truck on a hot Sunday evening.  After finding no remedy, we changed the alternator ourselves and problem is solved.

ON 4/23/21, I WENT TO START THE VEHICLE (WHICH IS OUR ONLY VEHICLE TO TRANSPORT OUR CHILDREN), BUT IT DID NOT START AS IF THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. MY HUSBAND TRIED TO JUMP THE VEHICLE, BUT IT DIED AS SOON AS JUMPER PACK WAS TAKEN OFF. LATER THAT DAY, MY BABY BECAME VERY ILL AND WE HAD TO GO TO URGENT CARE. MY HUSBAND ONLY HAS A WORK VAN THAT DOES NOT HAVE SEATS TO TRANSPORT PASSENGERS, SO HE PUT THE CAR ON A CHARGER FOR A BIT AND THE CAR STARTED. WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO COAST OFF THE HIGHWAY ONTO AN EXIT. WE JUMPED THE CAR WITH A JUMPER PACK AND MADE IT TO THE URGENT CARE. ON THE WAY HOME, WE WERE ABLE TO JUMP THE CAR WITH THE JUMPER PACK TO GET IT STARTED, BUT THE VEHICLE ONCE AGAIN LOST POWER ON THE HIGHWAY. WE THEN TRIED TO STAY OFF THE HIGHWAY, BUT THE VEHICLE KEPT LOSING POWER AND WE HAD TO JUMP IT EVERY TIME WE HAD TO STOP, WHICH LEFT US BLOCKING TRAFFIC MULTIPLE TIMES. WE HAD TO LEAVE THE VEHICLE IN A PARKING LOT FROM 4/23/21 UNTIL 4/25/21, WHEN MY HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO USE HIS WORK VAN AND A CAR TRAILER TO TOW THE CAR TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. HE LOOKED AT THE CAR WHEN HE DROPPED IT OFF AND THE ALTERNATOR WAS COVERED IN OIL, WHICH CAUSED IT TO GO OUT SUDDENLY. THERE IS A CURRENT HYUNDAI RECALL ON THE CAR OVER THE ISSUE, BUT THERE IS NO FIX. THE DEALERSHIP SAID WE HAVE TO PAY FOR REPAIRS OUT OF POCKET AND HOPEFULLY GET REIMBURSED LATER. DEALER SAYS THESE ARE "NORMAL ENGINE NOISES" AND I GOT ABOUT 5-10 MILES FROM THE DEALER AND THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENGINE MADE KNOCKING NOISES INTERMITTENTLY. WE DID SOME ONLINE SEARCH AND FOUND OUT THAT THE IN 2015 HYUNDAI DID HAD A RECALL FOR THE VALVE COVER GASKET AND IF REQUIRED THEY WOULD ALSO CHANGE THE ALTERNATOR. I AM NOT SURE IF OUR DEALER CHANGED THE ALTERNATOR AT THE TIME WHEN RECALLED ITEM WAS GETTING FIXED AND EVEN IF DEALER HAVE CHANGED - ITS BASED ON MY LIMITED AUTO KNOWLEDGE THAT ALTERNATOR LAST AT LEAST 50,000 TO 80,000 MILES. HENCE WE WOULD LIKE TO BRING IT TO THE NOTICE OF NHTSA. THE MAIN REASON IS THE CONCERN FOR SAFETY AS WHEN THIS HAPPEN BOTH THE KIDS WERE IN THE CAR WHICH SCARED US THE MOST. THE OIL LEAK THAT HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN REPORTED CAUSED THE ENGINE TO RUN LOW ON OIL. SINCE THERE IS A DRIP PAN UNDER THE ENGINE A CONSUMER WOULD HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING THAT THEIR ENGINE WAS SEVERELY LEAKING. IF THERE IS NO OIL IN YOUR PARKING SPOT AND NO SIGN OF THE CAR SMOKING A NORMAL PERSON WOULD NOT CHECK THE OIL WITH EVERY TANK OF GAS. THIS OIL LEAK CAUSED MY ALTERNATOR TO FAIL IN TRAFFIC, AND SINCE THE ENGINE RAN LOW ON OIL I HAD A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE ( THREW A ROD) AT 126K. THE OIL LEAK CAUSES LONG-TERM DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE THAT HYUNDAI REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE.

I CAN'T RECALL IF THE ORIGINAL OWNER HAD THE CAR SERVICED FOR THE RECALL OR NOT. BUT I DID CALL IN ABOUT IT AND WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS NOT ON THE LIST AND IF I NEED TO HAVE IT CHECKED AT THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER THEN I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE SERVICE CHARGE. WELL TO ME THAT WASN'T FAIR, BUT NOW THE FAIRNESS IS GONE BECAUSE NOW I'LL HAVE TO PAY OUT 6200 TO HAVE THE ENGINE REPLACED. THIS ISSUE COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED.

THE SECOND INCIDENT WAS AT MY CHILDREN'S SCHOOL DROP OFF LINE WHERE MY SON WAS SCOLDED FOR EXITING FROM THE REAR PASSENGER LEFT SIDE. THE REAR RIGHT SIDE WAS BROKEN, THUS PREVENTING HIM FROM EXITING THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKES FAILED TO PROPERLY STOP MY 2010 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ WHILE DRIVING ON A PRIMARY ARTERIAL ROAD. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF ANY BRAKE FAILURE OR WARNING LIGHT PRIOR TO THIS BRAKING FAILURE. BRAKES WERE WORKING FINE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC JUST PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED FOR STOPPED TRAFFIC AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP. THIS RESULTED IN A FRONT TO REAR END COLLISION AT AN APPROXIMATE SPEED BETWEEN 5 AND 10 MPH. THERE WERE NO SKID MARKS AND DURING BRAKING THE BRAKE PEDAL DID NOT INDICATE THAT THE ABS WAS ACTIVE (NO PULSATING OF THE PEDAL). THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED FROM THE DRIVERS STEERING WHEEL WITHOUT INJURY TO THE DRIVER OF THE HYUNDAI. THERE WERE NO OTHER PASSENGERS IN THE HYUNDAI NOR IN THE IMPACTED VEHICLE. THE DRIVER OF THE IMPACTED VEHICLE DID NOT SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION BUT DID COMPLAIN OF BACK AND NECK PAIN. THE FRONT END OF THE HYUNDAI HAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE, INCLUDING FRAME DAMAGE, RADIATOR DAMAGE, AND ENGINE DAMAGE. THE IMPACTED VEHICLE (A LATE 1960'S TRUCK) HAS REAR BUMPER AND FRAME DAMAGE. AFTER DISCUSSIONS WITH BOTH THE INVESTIGATING OFFICER AND THE BODY SHOP OWNER, I CONTACTED THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND TRIED TO SPEAK WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER. I HAVE LEFT TWO (2) VOICEMAIL MESSAGES TO DATE (BOTH THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT) AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RETURN PHONE CALL. THIS DEALERSHIP HAD JUST COMPLETED THE BRAKE SWITCH RECALL WORK ON THIS VEHICLE ON 12/24/13, INCLUDING A COMPLETE INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE. ON FRIDAY EVENING, 8/23/2013, THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN, AND THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO TEMPE HYUNDAI ON SATURDAY, 8/24/2013. AGAIN, THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY ERROR CODES, BUT KEPT THE CAR TO ALLOW THEIR "EXPERT" TECHNICIAN TO CHECK IT OUT. CURT MANUFACTURING IS RECALLING CERTAIN TOW PACKAGE WIRING HARNESSES, PART NUMBER 56024, THAT CONNECT TOW VEHICLE LIGHTING CIRCUITS TO TRAILER LIGHTING CIRCUITS SOLD FOR USE ON CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 THROUGH 2011 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ AND KIA SORENTO VEHICLES. THE UNITS ARE NOT WATER-TIGHT AND MOISTURE CAN SEEP INTO THE CONVERTER MODULE AND DEFEAT THE MODULE'S INTERNAL CIRCUIT PROTECTION.

Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

If the alternator is damaged, the charging system warning lamp in the instrument cluster will illuminate, and the engine will lose power and the vehicle will eventually stop operating while being driven. An unexpected failure of motive power while driving increases the risk of a crash.

Summary

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Veracruz vehicles manufactured from December 26, 2006, through July 24, 2012. The affected vehicles may experience an oil leak from the front cylinder bank valve cover gasket. If there is a sufficient amount of oil dropped onto the alternator, the alternator will be damaged causing the charging system to become inoperative.
