TAKATA RECALL WILL SOMEONE GET TOYOTA TO REPAIR MY CAR? I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET MY AIRBAG HAZARD REPAIRED SINCE 2014 RECALL CAME OUT. NO SUCCESS TO DATE. MEANWHILE FORCED TO DRIVE POTENTIAL BOMB. IT APPEARS TOYOTA IS GIVING PEOPLE THE RUN-AROUND. I STAYED ON THE LINE FOR GREAT LENGTH OF TIME AND WAS TOLD TO CALL BACK LATER AND CUT OFF. DEALER IS NOT CALLING BACK. ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, THANK YOU, INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
TAKATA RECALL - WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY, THERE WAS A SLOW UP, AND I BRAKED, BUT STOPPED RIGHT AT THE REAR BUMPER OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. HOWEVER, ANOTHER CAR WAS COMING BEHIND ME AND COULDN'T STOP, OR DIDN'T NOTICE THAT TRAFFICE HAD STOPPED. HE PUSHED ME INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. AT THAT MOMENT, WHICH WAS NOT A SEVERE FRONT END HIT, I SAW FIRE, AN EXPLOSION, AND THE AIRBAG BLEW OUT THE ENTIRE DASH ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, AND FLEW TO THE BACK SEAT BEHIND THE DRIVER'S SIDE. ALSO, THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. METAL WAS FLYING OUT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG IN THE FRONT. WE COULD NOT BELIEVE THE DAMAGE THAT RESULTED FROM SUCH A SOMEWHAT MINOR ACCIDENT. ADDITIONALLY, THE CAR WAS TOTALED WHICH HAS BEEN A STRAIN ON US! NOW, ABOUT 30 DAYS AFTER THE ACCIDENT, WE JUST RECEIVED A CARD IN THE MAIL TELLING US OF THE RECALL. WE HAD NO IDEA THERE IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH AIRBAG RECALLS! TODAY, I CHECKED ONLINE FOR THIS PROBLEM, AND FOUND MANY SITES DESCRIBING THE ISSUES. HOWEVER, MY CAR IS NOT EVEN ON THE RECALL LIST!!! I WAS IN THE CAR ALONE AND WAS AFFECTED BY THE ACCIDENT, HOWEVER, I DREAD TO THINK WHAT WOULD HAVE OCCURRED IF I HAD A PASSENGER WITH ME. I AM INCLUDING SOME PICTURES.
TAKATA RECALL. I'VE BEEN RECEIVING RECALL NOTICES FOR THIS VEHICLE FOR YEARS. I HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTING TO HAVE THREE ISSUES RESOLVED, ONLY ONE OF WHICH IS THE TAKATA AIRBAG PROBLEM. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE REPAIRS AT THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALER TO ME (ABOUT A 2.5 HOUR-RT DRIVE FROM MY HOME) FOR THE PAST YEAR+, BUT I AM REPEATEDLY TOLD THAT THEY ARE AWAITING THE PART(S) FOR THE TAKATA AIRBAG REPAIR. TO MAKE THINGS WORSE, I CONSTANTLY RECEIVE FLYERS FROM TOYOTA URGING ME TO HAVE THE REPAIRS DONE ASAP. I WOULD LIKE TO. BUT APPARENTLY, TOYOTA IS HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING THE PARTS TO THEIR DEALERSHIPS. IN THE MEANWHILE, I'M DRIVING A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CAR.
TAKATA RECALL NOT ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER IN A TIMELY MANNER. RECALL NUMBER: 08V162 FROM 2008, RECALL STATUS IS INCOMPLETE. LEADING TO POWER WINDOWS COMPLETELY IMMOVABLE. MANUFACTURER FAILED TO REMEDY THESE RECALLS IN A TIMELY MANNER.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. WHILE DRIVING 3 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED RAPIDLY WITHOUT WARNING AND CAUSED A CRASH. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. IT WAS UNKNOWN IF THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BECAUSE THE CONTACT COULD NOT REMEMBER. MOTTER AUTO REPAIR OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA WAS MADE AWARE OF THE CRASH AND REPAIRED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE PASSENGER DOOR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE CRASH. IN ADDITION, THE FAILURE RECURRED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS. WHILE DRIVING 2 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED RAPIDLY WITHOUT WARNING AGAIN. THERE WAS NO CRASH AND THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. ALSO, WHILE DRIVING 2 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED RAPIDLY WITHOUT WARNING AND CRASHED INTO THE CONTACT'S GARAGE DOOR. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE LEFT LEG AND LEFT HAND, WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DAMAGED. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET A RECALL 15V043 DONE SINCE JAN/FEB THIS YEAR AND I KEEP CALLING THE DEALER AND GETTING TOLD THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN SENT THE PARTS EVER. I ALSO HAVE THE AIR BAG RECALL 15V285 AND THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IVE CALLED THEM REGARDING THIS RECALL AS WELL. WTF DO THEY NEVER GET PARTS NOW? WHATS REALLY ANNOYING IS I KEEP GETTING LETTERS IN THE MAIL REGARDING RECALLS AND THIS LAST ONE SAYS "WHY HAVEN'T WE HEARD FROM YOU?" EVEN THOUGH IVE CALLED MULTIPLE TIMES.

TAKATA RECALL. I WAS TOLD BY A LOCAL PORTLAND, OR TOYOTA DEALER THAT THE REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THE TAKATA INFLATOR RECALL ARE BACK-ORDERED FOR AN INDEFINITE 6-12 MONTH PERIOD AND WARNED THAT IT COULD POSSIBLY TAKE EVEN LONGER. TOYOTA CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE CONFIRMED THAT TIMELINE BY SPEAKING WITH A DIFFERENT PORTLAND, OR TOYOTA DEALER. TOYOTA FURTHER INFORMED ME THAT I CANNOT HAVE A PASSENGER IN THE FRONT SEAT UNTIL THE TAKATA INFLATOR HAS BEEN REPLACED. TOYOTA HAS BEEN VERY UPFRONT AND HELPFUL IN ATTEMPTING TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE, WHICH IS COMMENDABLE, BUT I'M FILING THIS VEHICLE SAFETY COMPLAINT BECAUSE 6-12 MONTHS FOR A SAFETY RECALL REPAIR DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR BEING DONE IN A "TIMELY MANNER" AND NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE A PASSENGER IN THE FRONT SEAT FOR UP TO A YEAR WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT AND PROBLEMATIC. TO BE CLEAR, THE PASSENGER AIRBAG IN MY VEHICLE HAS NOT DEPLOYED.
I WAS BACKING DOWN MY DRIVEWAY WHEN MY CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED-THE BRAKES AND STEERING ALSO WENT OUT-I CRASHED INTO A BANK ON ONE SIDE OF THE ROAD, THEN THE CAR SWUNG AROUND AND I ENDED UP SUSPENDED OVER A DITCH. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO SWITCH GEARS AND TURN THE CAR OFF
I TOOK MY CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER TO FIX THE AIRBAG RECALL ON 8/31/2015 AND 1/20/2016. AFTER FIXING THE AIR BAG, I HEAR SOME KIND OF NOISE COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE DASH BOARD NEXT TO AIR BAG. I MENTIONED IT TO THE DEALER AND HAVE THEM LOOK AT IT BUT THEY MENTIONED ITS NOTHING. I STILL HAVE THAT NOISE COMING OUT FROM THERE. I;M WORRIED. LOOKS LIKE THEY DIDNT REPLACE THE AIRBAG INFLATOR PROPERLY.

THE ENGINE BURNS EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL AND HAS NOW STARTING MAKING WHAT APPEARS TO BE EITHER FAULTY LIFTER OR CAMSHAFT NOISES. THE MATRIX BURNS AT LEAST 1 QUART OF OIL FOR EVERY 1000 MILES DRIVEN. I DO REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND MONITOR THE OIL LEVEL WEEKLY.

TAKATA RECALL I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA ABOUT A RECALL CONCERNING MY VEHICLE. IN THIS LETTER, IT STATES THAT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP IS STOCKED ( WITH A SUB-WIRE HARNESS AND SRS ECU ) AND READY TO COMPLETE MY REPAIR. I SHOWED UP TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP ON 12/12. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PARTS NEEDED ARE NOT ACTUALLY IN STOCK AND NEEDED TO BE ORDERED. POSSIBLY TAKING UP TO TWO WEEKS. AFTER POINTING OUT THE DIFFERENCE IN WHAT WHAT THEY ARE TELLING ME VERSUS WHAT THE NOTICE STATES, I WAS DISMISSED. THIS RECALL IS A VERY IMPORTANT RECALL THAT RECEIVED MUCH PRESS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE AIRBAGS MAY DEPLOY WITHOUT WARNING, CAUSING INJURY. MY MAIN COMPLAINT IS WITH THE DEALERSHIP'S OVERALL CONCERN WITH THE RECALL PROCESS. WHEN I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, I WAS TOLD I WASN'T UNDERSTANDING THE NOTICE COMPLETELY. TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION, I WOULD LIKE SOMEONE TO CONTACT JOE MYERS TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN HOUSTON TO SEE IF THEY ARE INDEED HANDLING THIS TYPE OF RECALL PROPERLY.

MY DAUGHTER SAID THE STEERING TOTALLY LOCKED WHILE BEING DRIVEN. HER & HER BOYFRIEND COULD NOT GET THE STEERING WHEEL TO TURN AT ALL. THEY WERE NOT SPEEDING BECAUSE IT WAS ON WET ROADS. THEY BOTH SUFFERED MILD CONCUSSIONS & MY DAUGHTER HAS A SEVERE NECK SPRAIN. AFTER SEEING THE CAR, IT WENT OFF THE ROAD & ROLLED 2 OR 3 TIMES IT'S TOTALED, I'M SURPRISED THEY'RE NOT IN ICU! I DID SOME RESEARCH & ALMOST 1000 MATRIX'S HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN!! I DON'T KNOW WHY THERE ISN'T A RECALL. IT SEEMS TOYOTA ISN'T ALL THAT SAFE & DOESN'T CARE ABOUT IT'S CUSTOMERS AT ALL.

RECEIVED A RECALL IN THE MAIL STATING FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG INFLATOR MODULE IS DEFECTIVE. REPORT TO YOU NEAREST DEALER TO HAVE PART REPLACED. WHEN I DID THEY SAID THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE PART TO REPLACE. WAITING UNTIL THEY RECEIVE THE PART FROM TOYOTA MAIN BRANCH. MEANWHILE IN THE SAFETY NOTICE FOR RECALL IT SPECIFICALLY STATES DO NOT OPERATE VEHICLE WITH OCCUPANTS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. THIS VEHICLE IS USED FOR PICKING PEOPLE UP TO BE TRANSPORTED TO APPOINTMENTS. HOW LONG CAN THIS BE AN INCONVENIENCE ON NOT ALLOWING ANYONE IN THE FRONT SEAT. WHEN ASKED HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE. I GET NO RESPONSE FOR AN ANSWER ON HOW LONG BEFORE PARTS WILL BE SHIPPED OUT TO LOCAL DEALERSHIPS. THIS IS RIDICULOUS TO MAKE A CONSUMER WAIT FOR SUCH A LONG PERIOD OF TIME WITHOUT ANY CONCLUSION ON HOW LONG TO GET A PART. THE LAST TIME I CHECKED NEXT DAY AIR WAS AVAILABLE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD SO WHAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM WITH THIS RECALL. THIS IS COSTING ME MONEY FOR NOT ALLOWING ANYONE IN THIS VEHICLES SEAT. I WOULD APPRECIATE A RESPONSE OR A DEADLINE ON WHEN THIS CAN BE RESOLVED. THANKS HEARING ME ON THIS ISSUE. *TR

ONE OF 4 (FOUR) HANKOOK TIRES ON MY VEHICLE, WHICH WERE PURCHASED NEW ABOUT 1 1/2 YEARS AGO, SEEMS TO HAVE A DEFECT ON IT THAT PREVENTS WATER AND SHUSH FROM CHANNELING PROPERLY FROM THE INNER GROOVE TO THE SIDE OF THE TIRE. ONLY ONE OF THE TIRES SEEM TO HAVE THIS DEFECT, AND SEEMS TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, AS IT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN MOLDED WITHOUT A CHANNEL OR A VERY SHALLOW CHANNEL COMPARED TO THE OTHER 3. THE ALIGNMENT OF THE WHEEL DOES NOT SEEM TO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN THIS ALLEGED DEFECT. THE LACK OF THE PROPER CHANNELING ON THIS TIRE MAY HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT DURING WET OR SLUSHY WEATHER, AS CHANNELING OF THE FLUID IS AN IMPORTANT FUNCTION OF GOOD HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER. IT DEFECT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN DUE TO A LARGE QUALITY PROBLEM, AS THIS TIRE MADE IT'S WAY THROUGH HANKOOK'S DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM AND ONTO A PERSONAL VEHICLE. THE TIRE IN QUESTION IS A HANKOOK VENTUS V4 ES . I WILL BE DEMANDING THAT THIS TIRE BE REPLACED BY THE MANUFACTURE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS IT SEEMS TO BE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN IN MY OPINION, MYSELF BEING A DEGREED MECHANICAL ENGINEER. *TR

I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA, 19001 SOUTH WESTERN AVENUE, TORRANCE, CA ON A VEHICLE RECALL FOR MY 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX REGARDING A DEFECT, WHICH RELATES TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY. TOYOTA STATED THAT THE "ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) FOR THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) ... COULD HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED WITH INTEGRATED CIRCUITS THAT ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO INTERNAL SHORT CIRCUITING... IF INTERNAL SHORT CIRCUITING OCCURS, THE FRONT AIRBAG(S) AND/OR SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS COULD INADVERTENTLY DEPLOY. ANY AIRBAG THAT INADVERTENTLY DEPLOYS CAN, UNDER SOME CIRCUMSTANCES, INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY AND THE POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH." ON JANUARY 4, 2014, I CALLED PHILLIPS TOYOTA LOCATED AT 8629 U.S. HIGHWAY 441, LEESBURG, FL 34788, AT TEL. 352-728-2030 TO SCHEDULE THE INSTALLATION OF "... A SUB-WIRE HARNESS (FILTER) TO MINIMIZE ELECTRICAL NOISE FROM THE OTHER VEHICLE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AT NO CHARGE TO ME." I TALKED TO A PERSON BY THE NAME OF "[XXX]." HE TOLD ME THAT HE WOULD ORDER THE PART AND CALL ME AFTER IT COMES INTO THE DEALERSHIP. IT IS NOW FEBRUARY 19, 2014, AND I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED A CALL FROM PHILLIPS TOYOTA TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. THIS IS A FULL 46 DAYS AND/OR ABOUT 1 AND 1/2 MONTHS SINCE I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE "RISK OF INJURY AND THE POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH." THE LETTER STATED THAT SHOULD THE AIR BAG(S) DEPLOY OR THE SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS, THEN THERE IS AN INCREASE IN THE "RISK OF INJURY AND THE POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH." THE RECALL LETTER FROM TOYOTA STATED THAT I COULD FILE A COMPLAINT IF I FEEL THE AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP HAS FAILED OR IS UNABLE TO REMEDY THE DEFECT WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME. UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES, I FEEL THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAS FAILED AND THAT SIX (6) WEEKS IS AN UNREASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. LOW NOISE FROM ENGINE AREA, THEN HEARD A POP OR THUD. AFTER THIS CAME A SCRATCHY/GRINDING NOISE WHEN CAR WAS IN GEAR AND COASTING. THE NOISE WENT AWAY WHEN CLUTCH WAS DEPRESSED OR CAR WAS TAKEN OUT OF GEAR TO COAST. I CALLED A SERVICE REPAIR TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT THE SAME DAY. THE VERY NEXT DAY THE CAR LOCKED UP AND WAS UNDRIVEABLE. SOUNDED LIKE THE ENGINE HAD FALLEN OUT THE BOTTOM WITH HORRIBLE METAL GRINDING NOISE. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED ($150) AND THE SERVICE CENTER SAID I WOULD NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH AND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA MATRIX AND COROLLA. AFTER READING ONLINE, IT SEEMS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA OWNERS WITH LOW MILES HAVING BEARING ISSUES AND THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS GONE UNADDRESSED. EVEN THOUGH I WAS GOING ONLY 10 MILES PER HOUR, THE CAR LOCKS UP. THIS ISSUE WILL KILL SOMEONE, SOMEDAY. COST OF REPAIR WILL BE AROUND $3,100+. *TR
DURING DAYLIGHT ON THE ABOVE DATE, AS I MADE A TURN FROM SMALL PARKING LOT INTO A PARKING SPACE, CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO CONCRETE BUILDING. AS IT WAS ACCELERATING, THAT SPLIT SECOND, I CHECKED MY FOOT TO MAKE SURE IT WAS ON THE BRAKE, AND NOT GAS. I PRESSED HARD ON IT, TO NO AVAIL. IT DID NOT RESPOND. IT WAS TOTALED BY INSURANCE COMPANY. I HAD MINOR INJURIES: BRUISED LEFT CHEST AND SHOULDER. FOLLOWING DAY, A MILD STIFF NECK. ALL OF PHYSICAL AILMENTS GONE, EXCEPT MILD SORE NECK, IN 3 DAYS. NOTE; I PUT SPEED AT APPROXIMATE SPEED IN PARKING LOT BEFORE ACCELERATION OCCURRED. *TR

2004 MANUAL TOYOTA MATRIX XR 1. I WAS HEARING A VERY SLIGHT TINKLING SOUND WHEN AT LOW RPMS IN 2ND, 3RD AND 5TH GEARS. WHEN THE CLUTCH WAS PRESSED THE SOUND WENT AWAY. THE SOUND WAS OCCURRING FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS BEFORE THE FAILURE. 2. COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION. DRIVING IN 5TH GEAR AND THERE WAS A WHIRRING SOUND, A CLUNK, AND THE CAR JUMPED OUT OF GEAR. COULD NOT GET INTO 1ST, 2ND, 5TH, OR REVERSE. WHEN CAR IS NEUTRAL IT IS STILL IN GEAR. WE HAD SIGNIFICANT TROUBLE TOWING THE CAR AS I HAD TO BE INSIDE THE CAR WITH THE CLUTCH DOWN AS THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER PUSHED IT. 3. REPLACEMENT OF TRANSMISSION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH ATTEMPTING TO STOP; THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE POWER WINDOW WAS ACTIVATED, FOLLOWED BY A CLUNKING AND RATTLING NOISE. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED IN DECEMBER OF 2008 UNDER THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V162000 (VISIBILITY:GLASS,SIDE/REAR). THE CONTACT STATED THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW OPERATED CORRECTLY BEFORE THE RECALL REMEDY REPAIR WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THE MOST RECENT FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, THE CONTACT OPENED THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE DOOR AND ATTEMPTED TO EXIT THE VEHICLE WITH HER LEFT LEG EXTENDED OUTSIDE OF THE DOOR. UNEXPECTEDLY, THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED REPEATEDLY AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO RAPIDLY ACCELERATE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A MAILBOX AND TREE. THE VEHICLE CAME TO A COMPLETE WHEN ENTERING A DITCH. THE CONTACT SUFFERED TORN LIGAMENTS TO THE LEFT LEG. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS NOTIFIED; AND THEY ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE NOT BE DRIVEN AND BE TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. THE VEHICLE SUSTAINED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE DRIVER SIDE VIEW MIRROR AND FRONT DRIVER SIDE DOOR REQUIRING REPLACEMENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 150,000.
MY 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX XR WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION HAS SUDDENLY DISPLAYED SEVERE MECHANICAL NOISE FROM THE ENGINE/TRANSMISSION AREA. SMOG TECHNICIANS WOULDN'T TAKE LIABILITY TO RUN ENGINE FOR SMOG TESTS TO REGISTER FOR THE COMING YEAR, SO IS NOW REGISTERED AS PLANNED NON-OPERATION UNTIL I CAN GET THE CAR FIXED. GOOGLING "TOYOTA MATRIX TRANSMISSION NOISE" OR "TOYOTA MATRIX ENGINE NOISE" LEADS TO SEVERAL SITES IN WHICH TOO MANY OWNERS ARE EITHER EXPERIENCING COMPLETE ENGINE LOSS DUE TO "OIL SLUDGE PROBLEM" OR TOTAL TRANSMISSION LOSS DUE TO "ADMITTED TRANSMISSION BEARING DESIGN FLAW". I WILL NOT DRIVE THIS CAR AGAIN ON THE ROADWAY DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF SUDDEN AND COMPLETE LOSS OF TRANSMISSION FUNCTION AT ANY TIME. THIS CAR IS A GREAT DESIGN FOR FUNCTIONALITY, BUT I AM TOTALLY DISMAYED AND FRUSTRATED THAT AT 120,000 MILES, THE CAR IS OFF THE ROAD FOR SERIOUS ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION FLAWS THAT APPEAR TO BE VERY COMMON, CONSIDERING I BOUGHT TOYOTA FOR THE RELIABILITY THAT WE ALL KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT. I HAVE KEPT UP ON THE OIL CHANGES SINCE THEY WERE PRE-PURCHASED FOR 5 YEARS WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR, AND HAVE KEPT FRESH AFTER THE 5 YEARS EXPIRED. VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE FATE THAT THIS CAR HAS PRESENTED ME, AND THE COSTS THAT I WILL HAVE TO INCUR TO GET IT BACK ON THE ROAD. *TR
THE CAR HAS A CONTINUOUS GRUMBLE FROM CLUTCH AREA, TOYOTA SAYS IT HAS A INPUT SHAFT BEARING FAILURE. ESTIMATED REPAIR $3500.00. *TR
I OWN A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. IT HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES AND HAVE BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF. ON AUGUST 20, 2010, DRIVING 30-35 MILES PER HOUR, THE FRONT AXEL BROKE! I DID NOT RUN OVER A POT-HOLE, THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT---NOTHING TO REMOTELY CAUSE THE FRONT AXEL TO BREAK. IT IS VERY UPSETTING HAVING TO PAY FOR A REPAIR THAT IS A DEFECT IN THE CAR AND NOW BEING TOLD THAT THEY CAN'T EVEN FIND THE PART TO REPAIR THE CAR. *TR
I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED IN 2007 WITH 15,000 MILES ON IT. WITHIN A YEAR THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. GOT THIS REPAIRED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND WITHIN A YEAR THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AGAIN. I HAVE BEEN DOING RESEARCH ON THIS MODEL YEAR MATRIX TO SEE IF IT WAS JUST MY CAR DOING THIS, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER PEOPLE WITH 2004 MATRIX THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. WHAT HAPPENS IS PARTS OF THE FLY WHEEL OR CLUTCH DYSFUNCTION. IT MAKES THE CAR STOP AND IT MAKES A GRINDING NOISE. IT HAPPENED ONCE WHILE I WAS ON A REMOTE SECTION OF HIGHWAY AND THE OTHER TIME I WAS STARTING MY CAR IN THE MORNING TO LEAVE FOR WORK. MY CAR HAS CLOSE TO 70,000 MILES ON IT NOW, BUT AS I STATED PREVIOUSLY, IT HAPPENED AT AROUND 20,000 MILES THE FIRST TIME, WHICH IS UNUSUAL FOR A TOYOTA, OR ANY CAR FOR THAT MATTER. PARTS WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALERSHIP BOTH TIMES, BUT I'M SCARED IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN. I DO NOT TRUST THIS VEHICLE TO DRIVE OVER EXTENDED PERIODS OR MILES. *TR
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ONE. WENT TO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. TOLD THE GAS CAP/FUEL PIPE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT HAD POSSIBLE CORROSION. WAS TOLD THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. DID NOT LOCATE THE EXACT PROBLEM, CHARGED ME A DIAGNOSTIC FEE. 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX, 73,000 MILES, EXTENDED "BUMPER TO BUMPER" WARRANTY. *TR
THE ENGINE HAD "SLUDGED" AT ABOUT 70,000 MILES (2004 TOYOTA MATRIX). THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP HAD DONE THE OIL CHANGES ROUTINELY SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR CERTIFIED. THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT USING AN EXTENDED WARRANTY I HAD PURCHASED FROM A PRIVATE COMPANY (NOT TOYOTA). THE CAR WAS KNOCKING WHEN I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM MICHIGAN TO FLORIDA. I CHECKED THE OIL, IT WAS DRY, SO I BOUGHT MORE OIL AND FILLED IT (2 QUARTS). BY THE TIME I GOT HOME, THE OIL STICK AGAIN READ EMPTY, SO I AGAIN FILLED IT. I DID NOT SEE ANY OIL BURNING (THE SMOKE CLOUD). ANOTHER DAY PASSED AND THE OIL WAS EMPTY AGAIN, SO I TOOK IT INTO THE SHOP AND THEY DETERMINED THE OIL HAD BEEN CLOGGED. *TR
2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. CONSUMER STATES DRIVER SIDE FRONT WINDOW CLANKS WHENEVER ITS LOWERED BELOW HALF WAY, AND MAKES A RUBBING NOISE WHEN IT IS RAISED*TGW THE CONSUMER STATED HE EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SYMPTOMS AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL GARAGE TO HAVE THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED. AFTER LOCATING A RECALL, THE REPAIR SHOP CALLED A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER. BUT, WHEN THEY CHECKED THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, IT WAS DISCOVERED THE CONSUMERS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. *JB
I HAVE NEVER HAD MECHANICAL ISSUES WITH MY 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. LAST WEEKEND WHILE TRYING TO MERGE ONTO INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 10 IN AZ FOR A WEEKEND CAMPING TRIP WITHOUT WARNING MY ENGINE SEIZED WHILE I WAS TRYING TO MERGE ONTO THE HIGHWAY. THE ENGINE STOPPED AND THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE OFF ONTO THE SHOULDER BEFORE THE SEMI BEHIND ME REAR ENDED ME. I AM THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE AS WELL AS THE INFANT I HAD WITH ME IN THE CAR. WHEN WE TOWED THE CAR TO A MECHANIC HE ACCUSED ME OF DRIVING THE CAR WITHOUT OIL BECAUSE THE ENGINE WAS FULL OF SLUDGE. THANKFULLY MY FATHER WAS WITH ME AND HE EXPLAINED TO THE MECHANIC THAT I REGULARLY HAVE MY CAR SERVICED AND WE HAD OIL IN THE CAR AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. AFTER SOME SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH TOYOTAS. I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND IF THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WHY TOYOTA HAS NOT INFORMED THEIR CUSTOMERS SO THAT WE CAN PROTECT OURSELVES AND THE PASSENGERS IN OUR CARS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE WHO CONFIRMED THAT THE FUEL PIPE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,387.
HEARD RATTLING WHEN CAR IN GEAR. OUR MECHANIC SAID IT IS THE MAIN BEARING IN THE TRANSMISSION AND IT WOULD GET LOUDER AND THEN SEIZE UP EVENTUALLY. THIS CAR HAS BEEN REGULARLY AND WELL MAINTAINED AND HAS ONLY 107 K ON IT. THE CLUTCH IS STILL ORIGINAL AND THE TRANS NEEDS REPLACING BEFORE IT ? LOCAL DEALER SAYS THERE IS NOTHING HE DO. WE ARE GOING TO PUT A NEW TRANSMISSION IN AND DRIVE IT FOR ANOTHER 40 K THEN DUMP IT. AM COMPLETELY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS CAR AND IN TOYOTA. *TR
I OWN A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX 2WD BASE MODEL WITH 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. I HAD 75,000 MILES ON IT AND VERY FEW ISSUES UNTIL ONE DAY ON THE HIGHWAY, THE TRANSMISSION SEIZED UP COMPLETELY. THE ONLY RECOURSE WAS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. HE STATED THAT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS AT A STOP SIGN WITH HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKES, IT SURGED FORWARD . HE WOULD HAD TO APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES TO STOP THE VEHICLE . THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPAIRS MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAD BEGUN TO SURGE EVERY SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100000. UPDATED 05/10/10*JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX XR. WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO PARK THE VEHICLE AT 3 MPH, IT ACCELERATED ON IT'S OWN. THE DRIVER SAID THAT SHE APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. SHE SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL GEAR IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,873. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 15,000. UPDATED 05/07/10
I OWNED A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX THAT WAS TOTALLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN 2006. I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW AND WAS THE ONLY OWNER. AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT MY SISTER WAS DRIVING, AND I WAS THE PASSENGER. BASICALLY, WE WERE DRIVING ON CRUISE CONTROL IN THE LEFT LANE OF THE HIGHWAY, A SEMI CUT US OFF, AND WHEN MY SISTER PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT DISENGAGE AND THE CAR WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN. I WITNESSED HER PRESSING THE BRAKE, AND NOTHING WAS HAPPENING. MY SISTER SWERVED INTO THE RIGHT LANE TO AVOID REAR-ENDING THE SEMI, LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR, SPUN INTO THE SIDE OF THE SEMI, AND THEN BOUNCED OFF THE SEMI AND RAN OFF THE HIGHWAY. THE ENGAGEMENT OF THE ENGINE, THE SPEED, AND ACCELERATION OF THE CAR DID NOT CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE COURSE OF THE ACCIDENT. WHEN THE POLICE CAME OUT, BOTH MY SISTER AND I DESCRIBED THESE EVENTS TO THE POLICE OFFICERS. I ALSO EXPLAINED THIS TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY. AT THE TIME, I BELIEVED SO STRONGLY THAT THE CAR MALFUNCTIONED IN SOME WAY THAT I TRIED TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER, BUT THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS NOT INTERESTED. AT THE TIME I DID SOME RESEARCH TO SEE IF OTHER DRIVERS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS, BUT I COULD FIND NOTHING. SINCE THE CAR WAS TOTALLED, I COULD NOT KEEP THE CAR TO HAVE IT EXAMINED AND I HAD LITTLE CHOICE BUT TO LET THE MATTER GO. NOW IT IS FOUR YEARS LATER AND THERE IS A MASSIVE TOYOTA RECALL, BUT THE 2004 MATRIX IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. I FEEL OBLIGATED TO FILE A COMPLAINT, NOT FOR GAIN ON MY PART, BUT BECAUSE I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THE MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS IN TOYOTA CARS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FAR LONGER THAN TOYOTA WILL ADMIT, AND THE MALFUNCTIONS ARE MUCH MORE WIDESPREAD THAN THE YEARS AND MODELS CURRENTLY LISTED. I ALSO OWN A 2006 MATRIX THAT IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. I AM BEGGING THAT THERE BE A WIDESPREAD INVESTIGATION TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE AFFECTED YEARS AND MODELS ARE ADDED TO THE RECALLS. THIS MUST BE DONE TO SAVE LIVES. *TR
MANUAL TRANSMISSION SEIZED WHILE DRIVING TOYOTA MATRIX. CAR TOTALLY LOCKED UP AND STOPPED ON THE FREEWAY. CAR ONLY HAD 114,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS REGULARLY SERVICED. FAULTY EQUIPMENT AND DANGEROUS. *TR
2004 MATRIX TRANSMISSION FAILED WHILE WIFE WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY ON A RAINY NIGHT. PRIOR TO THIS THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO HAVE NOISES WHICH ONE MIGHT ATTRIBUTE TO AN AUTO AT 110,000 MILES. AFTER THIS FAILURE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT EXCEPT WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY. I HAD THE MATRIX TOWED HOME AND AM IN THE PROCESS OF DETERMINING SOLUTION. THE REST OF THE CAR IS FLAWLESS BUT THIS EARLY FAILURE OF A MANUAL TRANSMISSION IN A TOYOTA IS DISCOURAGING. THE SITUATION WAS A DANGEROUS ONE AS FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION CAUSED THOSE VEHICLES AROUND HER TO BECOME AGGRESSIVE TOWARDS THE SLOWLY MOVING MATRIX. MY WIFE WAS EXTREMELY FORTUNATE TO COAX THE CAR TO SAFETY. THESE UNEXPECTED REPAIRS WILL COST ME AROUND $2500 TO $3000 TO RESOLVE. THE AUTO IS OF NO VALUE WITHOUT THE REPAIR, AND WITH THE REPAIR RESALE NOT MUCH GREATER. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. WHEN IN DRIVE, FOOT ON THE BRAKES, THE CAR ON OCCASIONS WILL LURCH FORWARD. THIS HAPPENS EVERY DAY. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO TOYOTA NUMEROUS TIMES AND THEY KEEP TELLING ME THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. I HAVE THIS DOCUMENTED BACK TO 2005. *TR
MANUAL TRANSMISSION FAILED ON MY 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. STARTED MAKING CLUNKING AND GRINDING NOISES AND FIFTH GEAR STOPPED PROVIDING FORWARD MOVEMENT. I WAS ABLE TO USE LOWER GEARS. *TR
WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY, OUR 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX, APPROX. 98K MILES STARTED TO BUCK AND MAKE A TERRIBLE GRINDING NOISE. WE THEN LOST 4TH AND 5TH GEARS. WE WERE FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND GET TO THE SIDE HOWEVER WE WERE STUCK AT NIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY. THE TRANSMISSION BEARINGS SHREDDED CAUSING THE CLUTCH TO FAIL. REPLACEMENT COST $3500.00. SINCE, WE HAD READ ABOUT HUNDREDS OF OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS VEHICLE AND WERE SHOCKED THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY FOR INFERIOR PARTS AND RECALLED THE TRANSMISSION. TOYOTA'S REPUTATION AND THOUGHT OF DEPENDABILITY AND SAFETY HAS FALTERED. IT IS SAD BECAUSE WE HAVE OWNED SEVERAL OTHER TOYOTA'S IN THE PAST BUT WILL NOT CONSIDER PURCHASING ANOTHER. WE FEEL WE WERE PUT KNOWINGLY INTO DANGER DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AS SO MANY OTHERS UNFORTUNATELY SHARED THE SAME EXPERIENCE WITH SAME MODEL/YR TOYOTA. *TR

DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, HEARD A GRINDING NOISE DROVE TO THE MECHANIC WE USE AND WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION IS BAD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. *TR
HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2004 MATRIX. THE CAR HAS BEEN MAKING NOISE FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS. I DID NOT TAKE IT TO THE SHOP TO FIND THE NOISE BECAUSE IT RAN FINE. THE LAST TIME I STARTED THE CAR BEFORE IT BROKE DOWN THE NOISE WAS REALLY LOUD AND DID NOT DRIVE VERY WELL. THE TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH SHIFTED FINE. CAR BROKE DOWN ON THE INTERSTATE. WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE FIRST EXIT. TOOK IT THE REPAIR SHOP. THEY DESCRIBED IT AS A METAL GRINDING NOISE AND SAW HEAVY VIBRATIONS FROM THE TRANSMISSION WHEN THE CAR WAS ON THE LIFT. REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION FOR $2700. GOT THE CAR BACK, DRIVES FINE. NO NOISE. *TR
TOYOTA MATRIX 2004 I HAVE BEEN NOTICING (WHAT APPEARED TO BE) SLIPPAGE IN THE CLUTCH, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER GEARS. THIS KEPT GETTING MORE PROBLEMATIC UNTIL 12-6-2009 THE CAR WOULD NOT GO MORE THAN 20 MPH AND SMELLED HOT. WHAT APPEARED TO BE TRANSMISSION OIL WAS FOUND ON THE DRIVEWAY UNDER THE CAR. NOTE: UPON LOOKING AT THIS ISSUE VIA THE WWW, I SEE THIS IS A 'PREVALENT' ISSUE WITH TOYOTA MATRIX BUT THE CAR DEALERSHIPS DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THIS. ?? *TR
I HAVE A 2004 MATRIX (5 SPEED MANUAL) WITH 85K AND THE THROWOUT BEARING HAS FAILED. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM A CONCERT WITH A FEW YOUTH KIDS ON SATURDAY NIGHT. I WAS ENTERING THE 1-10E TRYING TO MERGE IN WITH TRAFFIC WHEN THE THROWOUT BEARING FAILED. I TRIED TO SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR, BUT IT WAS STUCK IN 2ND. I HAD TO SLAM THE GEAR INTO PLACE TO PREVENT GETTING RUN OVER BY A SUV. THIS WAS MY SECOND NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE THIS YEAR IN MY CAR DUE TO THE TRANSMISSION. EARLIER, WHEN THE CAR WAS AT 74K, THE FRONT AXLE ON THE TRANSMISSION BROKE. THIS BROKE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION WHERE I HAD TO KEEP SWAYING MY BODY FORWARD UNTIL THE CAR HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO ROLL ACROSS. AFTER REPLACING THE FRONT AXLE, I REALLY DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX ANOTHER TRANSMISSION ISSUE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO RECALL THEIR TRANSMISSIONS ON THE 2004 MATRIX, I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY MORE TIMES I CAN AFFORD TO CHEAT DEATH. *TR
TRANSMISSION WENT OUT ON HIGHWAY. *TR
I AM A 53-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WHO GOT THE TIP OF MY RIGHT INDEX FINGER CAUGHT IN THE POWER WINDOW OF A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. IT FELT AS IF IT WOULD HAVE CUT IT OFF HAD I NOT BEEN ABLE TO PRESS THE RELEASE BUTTON WITH MY OTHER HAND. AS IT IS, ONE WEEK AFTER THE EVENT OCCURRED, THE TIP OF MY FINGER IS STILL NUMB. THIS WAS SO EASY TO DO, AND SO POTENTIALLY DAMAGING. PRESSURE-SENSITIVE POWER WINDOWS NEED TO BE IMPLEMENTED ASAP! *TR
MY 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX TRANSMISSION FAILED. NOT THE CLUTCH, BEARINGS OR PRESSURE PLATE...THE TRANSMISSION. HAD TO HAVE IT REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF $3800. APPARENTLY I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THE PROBLEM...JUST DO A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX MANUAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND LOOK AT THE 30+ PAGES OF COMMENTS ON EDMUNDS SITE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS AS A DEFECT AND REFUND OUR MONEY. WE NEED YOUR HELP, PLEASE. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX WITH MILEAGE OF 52,811 AND A STANDARD TRANSMISSION. I HAD TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH. THE WARRANTY COVERS 60,000 MILES OR FIVE YEARS, SO I WAS UNDER THE MILEAGE BUT SIX MONTHS OVER THE YEARS. I UNDERSTAND THAT PEOPLE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH CLUTCH/TRANSMISSION WITH THE 2003-2006 MATRIXES. IT SEEMS VERY EARLY TO ME FOR THE CLUTCH TO HAVE FAILED AND IT COST $1,295 TO FIX. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE CONTACT DOWNSHIFTED TO FOURTH GEAR AND HEARD A GRINDING AND SQUEALING NOISE. THE NOISE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE GEAR BEARINGS WERE WORN, WHICH RESULTED IN GEAR FLUID LEAKAGE FROM THE SEALS. THE GEAR FLUID WAS DISPENSED INTO THE FLUID RESERVOIR. THE TECHNICIAN RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY INOPERATIVE AND HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 94,620.
I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 88 AT ABOUT 70 MPH AND AT MILE MARKER 117 THE HOOD OF MY CAR FLEW OPEN AND SHATTERED MY WINDSHIELD. I WAS STUCK IN THE FAST LANE OF TRAFFIC BECAUSE I WAS IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE AND THE SHOULDERS WERE BLOCKED OFF. I HAD NOWHERE TO GO, AND IT WAS A VERY SCARY SITUATION. THE HOOD LATCH HAS NEVER FAILED BEFORE, AND THE LAST TIME I HAD MY HOOD OPEN WAS WHEN I HAD MY OIL CHANGED ABOUT TWO MONTHS BEFORE. I HAD DRIVEN ON THE INTERSTATE MANY TIMES SINCE THEN, AND THE HOOD WAS SECURELY LATCHED. I REPORTED MY DAMAGES TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY, AND THE HOOD, WINDSHIELD, ROOF AND GRILL OF MY CAR WERE REPLACED, TOTALING $4,800 IN DAMAGES. *TR

TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION IS 4 YEARS OLD AND SEEMS TO HAVE EXPERIENCE A BEARING FAILURE. PROBLEM BEGINS WITH LOUD RATTLING NOISE IN THE ENGINE, WHICH EVENTUALLY LEADS TO TRANSMISSION FAILURE AS STATED BY SIMILAR OWNERS. I DISCOVERED THE CHRONIC PROBLEM AFTER READING A INTERNET FORUM WITH 26 PAGES OF THE SIMILAR USERS WITH THE SAME ISSUES. LINK IS LISTED BELOW: HTTP://TOWNHALL-TALK.EDMUNDS.COM/DIRECT/VIEW/.F0D9B0E/130 WITH MY SITUATION, THE CAR IS IN THE REPAIR SHOP, NOT SURE WHAT ACTION TO TAKE AS PROBLEM WILL OCCUR WITH UNDETERMINED AMOUNT OF TIME. *TR
MY 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX AT 87,000 NOW NEEDS A NEW CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I TOOK IT IN TO BE DIAGNOSED. P0420 WAS THE CODE. WARRANTY FOR THIS PART IS FOR 80,000 MILES. THE COST TO REPLACE THIS PART IS 1300.00 BY THE DEALER. A NEW TOYOTA REPLACEMENT CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS BEING INSTALLED TODAY. MY MECHANIC STATES THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH TOYTOA MATRIXES AND THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE REPLACING THESE. I KEEP MY CARS FOR A REALLY LONG TIME (LAST CAR 310,000 MILES) AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE A CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THIS IS NOT A PART THAT SHOULD NEED REPLACING AT 87,000 MILES. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED IN THE SO CALLED RELIABILITY OF TOYOTA'S AND REALLY DISAPPOINTED IN THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE. I CALLED AND SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT TO TOYOTAUSA AND WAS BASICALLY TOLD THAT THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT A PROBLEM OR TOYOTA WOULD HAVE RECALLED THESE ALREADY. OBVIOUSLY, TOYOTA DOES NOT KEEP TRACK OF THEIR CUSTOMER MAINTENANCE RECORDS AND COMPLAINTS OR THEY WOULD KNOW THAT THIS IS A CHRONIC ISSUE ON 2003-2004 MATRIXES. *TR

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS THE VEHICLE VEERED FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND THIS CONDITION BECAME WORSE WHILE STOPPING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. UPON INSPECTION IT WAS DETERMINED THE TIRES WERE THE CAUSE OF THE STEERING PROBLEMS. THE DEALER DETERMINED THE TIRES THAT WERE PURCHASED WITH THE VEHICLE WERE THE WRONG TYPE OF TIRES, WHICH CAUSED THE FRONT END TO BECOME OUT OF ALIGNMENT. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REGULARLY MAINTAINED WITH TIRE ROTATION EVERY 3,000 MILES. THERE HAS BEEN NO REPLACEMENT OF THE TIRES. THE TIRE LINE IS CONTINENTAL P20555R16. UPDATED 3/20/2006 - THE CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO AVOID HITTING A DEER BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY TIRE. THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED. ON 2/11/2006 THE CONSUMER REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WHICH RESOLVED THE PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT END . *NM
2004 TOYOTA MATRIX RIGHT FRONT TIRE BLEW OUT. *TS THE CONSUMER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND STRUCK A GUARDRAIL. THE ENTIRE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WAS SCRAPED AND DENTED INCLUDING THE FENDER, BOTH DOORS, REAR QUARTER AND BOTH BUMPER. *NM
FIANCE AND I WERE ON THE 210 FREEWAY HEADING EAST. HE SAID WE SHOULD TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER WHEN I ASKED WHY HE SAID THE STEERING IS ACTING FUNNY. THE SECOND HE FINISHED HIS SENTENCE, THE CAR SPUN OUT OF CONTROL. CAR DID 360 DEGREE TURNS ACROSS FREEWAY (FROM LEFT LANE TO RIGHT LANE) AND OVER THE EDGE, DOWN A HILL, OVER A FENCE, AND INTO A DITCH. MINOR INJURIES. WE WERE LUCKY NOT TO HAVE BEEN KILLED. CAR WAS TOTALED. ACCIDENT IS STILL BEING INVESTIGATED TO DETERMINE IF THERE WAS A MECHANICAL DEFECT.*JB
DT: 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX XR, THE VEHICLE HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING, THERE WAS A NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING YOKE, CONSUMER STATES THE STEERING DID NOT FEEL RIGHT, THE CONSUMER HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO BE REPAIRED, THE DEALER TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT THE PROBLEM WAS BECAUSE THE SPLASH GUARD WAS DRAGGING, THE DEALER PUT TWO PINS IN THE SPLASH GUARD, BECAUSE THE PINS WERE MISSING, THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN TO BE REPAIRED, THE DEALER TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE STEERING YOKE, PREVIOUSLY THE TRANSMISSION HAD WENT OUT ON THE VEHICLE, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO HAVE A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM IT. THE CONSUMER TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE CASE AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP WAITING FOR A YOKE REPLACEMENT. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT IT IS ON BACK ORDER, ALL THESE PROBLEMS OCCURRED DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER THE STEERING WAS NOT STILL UNDER WARRANTY THE FIRST TIME THE CONSUMER TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY NOW, THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN MAY 2003. *NM THE CLICKING NOISE IS STILL PRESENT WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. *SC
DT: WHILE DRIVING UNDER NORMAL DRY CONDITIONS ON STRAIGHT ROAD VEHICLE DRIFTED TO LEFT SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY ,ATTEMPTED TO GAIN CONTROL, WENT TO RIGHT OF HIGHWAY, FELT LIKE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. CORRECTED TO THE RIGHT, AND IT OVER CORRECTED. COULDN'T GET THE VEHICLE TO GO STRAIGHT. INSURANCE INSPECTED IT, AND THEY SAID THEY WERE UNABLE TO INSPECT THE STEERING. TOYOTA SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND A MECHANICAL DEFECT. *AK CONSUMER LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE AND WENT INTO THE DITCH. CONSUMER'S VEHICLE BECAME AIRBORNE, LANDED ON IT'S SIDE IN A CORNFIELD, AND WAS DETERMINED A TOTAL LOSS. CONSUMER WAS THEN TAKEN AND ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL WITH INJURIES SUCH AS A BROKEN STERNUM, FOOT, FINGER, MULTIPLE CUTS AND CONTUSIONS.*SB
2004 TOYOTA MATRIX DRIFTED TO THE LEFT WHILE DRIVING RESULTING IN THE CONSUMER LOSING CONTROL AND THE VEHICLE FLIPPING OVER.***NO ANSWER REQUIRED*** *MR AS THE CONSUMER ATTEMPTED ONCE MORE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE STEERING, THE VEHICLE VEERED OFF TO THE LEFT, HIT A DITCH, WENT AIRBORNE AND FLIPPED. TOYOTA DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS STEERING PROBLEMS. *SC *JB
MY 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX HAS EXPEREINCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE SEVERAL TIMES SINCE I HAVE PURCHASED IT; I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO STOP THE CAR FROM MOVING FORWARD BY FURTHER DEPRESSING THE BRAKE. BUT ON SATURDAY MARCH 26 WHILE AT A STOP SIGN, THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION HAPPENED AGAIN AND I WAS UNABLE TO IMMEDIATELY STOP MY CAR FROM LURCHING FORWARD. IT MOVED SEVERAL INCES INTO ONCOMING (PERPENDICULAR) TRAFFIC BEFORE I FINALLY THREW IT INTO PARK AND PULLED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP IT. NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED BUT IT CAME CLOSE, AND I HAD MY TODDLER IN THE BACK SEAT, SO I CONSIDER THIS A SERIOUS MATTER. I TOOK IT TO MY DEALERSHIP (OURISMAN TOYOTA IN CHANTILLY, VA) THAT MONDAY, AND THEY KEPT IT FOR TWO DAYS. THEY RAN ALL DIAGNOSTIC TESTS POSSIBLE AND FOUND NO PROBLEM. NOTHING WAS FIXED BECAUSE NO TEST SHOWED A PROBLEM BUT I AM SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR -- THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION HAPPENS ONLY RANDOMLY AND CANNOT BE PREDICTED. I DRIVE WITH ONLY ONE FOOT SO THIS IS NOT A CASE OF TWO-FOOTED DRIVING AND ACCIDENTAALLY STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR. IN EACH CASE MY FOOT WAS OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND ON THE BRAKE. *AK
I'M VERY HAPPY WITH MY MATRIX EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. THE HUB CAPS ARE SO LOSE. I'M CONSTANTLY PUSHING THEM BACK ON TIGHTER. I HAVEN'T HAD THE CAR MORE THAN A FEW MONTHS AND 3 HUBCAPS HAVE ALREADY FALLEN OFF, WITHINS DAYS OF ME MAKING SURE THEY WERE TIGHT ENOUGH. WHEN THEY FLY OFF MY CAR, ALL THE PIECES THAT HOLD THEM ONTO THE RIM ARE BROKEN OFF AND THEY ARE USELESS. I HAVE LOST 3 HUBCAPS IN THE LAST 3 WEEKS!*AK
CLUTCH FAILED AFTER 20K MILES. NON-WARRANTY ITEM. *NM
WHILE DRIVING 55-60 MPH CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A REAR END CRASH. UPON IMPACT, AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. *AK
LOW SPEED BRAKING VEHICLE MOVES EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT. SEVERAL SERVICE VISITS TO DEALER FOR BRAKE REPAIRS, REPLACED ABS SENSOR, BRAKE PADS, TURNED ROTORS, ALIGNMENTS AND TIRE ROTATIONS.*AK
THE FRONT SPOILER ON THE MATRIX IS CONSTANTLY GETTING SCRAPED UP ON DRIVEWAYS. IT IS TOO LOW. THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS TO PUT A WHOLE NEW BUMPER ON THE CAR, AT MY COST. THE SPOILERS ARE LISTED AS A OPTION, BUT WHERE I AM FROM IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND A XR WITHOUT THEM INSTALLED. THE CAR IS LESS THEN A YEAR OLD, AND ALREADY LOOKS BAD. WHO WOULD THINK THEY WOULD DESIGN A CAR THAT WOULD CONSTANTLY GET ALL SCRAPED UP. IT WOULD BE NICE IF THIS "OPTION" WAS TRULY A OPTION.*AK
I BOUGHT A SET OF 4 "TIRE MINDER" BRAND 28-32 PSI TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING VALVE CAPS AT BROOKSTONE ON JUL 27, 2004. I INSTALLED THEM ON THE TIRES OF A NEW 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX ACCORDING TO THE PACKAGE INSTRUCTIONS. (NO VALVE EXTENSTIONS AND MAKING SURE "O" RING WAS IN PLACE, PRESSURE MEASURED BY 2 GUAGES AT 30 PSI.) ALL THE CAPS HELD PRESSURE AND WORKED CORRECTLY FOR APPROX 24HRS. THEN THE FIRST CAP FAILED WHILE CAR WAS PARKED IN DRIVEWAY RELEASING THE AIR WITHIN SECONDS. APPROX 12 HRS LATER THE 2ND CAP FAILED IN SIMILAR FASHION. FORTUNATELY, THE CAR WAS NOT BENG DRIVEN AT THE TIME OR ELSE AN ACCIDENT MAY HAVE RECURRED. I REMOVED THE REMAINING 2 CAPS. I CONTACTED BROOKSTONE AND REPORTED THE ISSUE. THEY OFFERED TO REFUND MONEY BUT NO OTHER ACTION. I STILL HAVE THE CAPS. I WOULD BE WILLING TO SEND THEM TO A TESTING LAB FOR ANALYSIS. *AK
WE HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX XRS THE CLUTCH WENT OUT AT 13,000 MILES. DEALER SAID IT WAS DRIVER ERROR. WE HAVE ANOTHER CAR WITH A CLUTCH THAT HAS 165,000 MILES WITHOUT ANY CLUTCH PROBLEMS. THE CLUTCH SMELLS LIKE IT IS BURING AGAIN AND THE DEALER SAID IT IS FROM THE OLD CLUTCH EVEN THOUGH THEY REPLACED IT.*AK
FRONT BRAKE ROTORS WARPED,CAME DOWN LONG WINDING HILL AT 55 MPH, HIT BRAKES AN STEERING WHEEL SHOOK LEFT TO RIGHT QUITE ALOT.*AK
2004 TOYOTA MATRIX PURCHASED 12/8/03 IS SUPPOSED TO GET AT LEAST 26 MPG IN CITY TRAFFIC. MINE CONSISTENTLY GETS NO MORE THAN 21 MPG. DEALER CAN FIND NOTHING WRONG BUT SOMETHING IS, EITHER FALSE ADVERTISING FOR THE ENTIRE MATRIX LINE OR SOMETHING WITH THIS CAR. I WOULD NOT HAVE TRADED A PAID UP 99 COROLLA THAT GOT 26 MPG FOR THIS CAR, HAD I KNOWN IT WOULD COST ME FAR MORE TO RUN (AS WELL AS TO FINANCE). *LA
FRONT WHEELS VIBRATE AT HIGHWAY SPEED, IF SNOW SLUSH FREEZES IN LOW PROFILE STEEL WHEEL RIMS. THIS HAPPENED TWICE THIS WINTER TO ME, I FIRST THOUGHT A WHEEL WEIGHT CAME OFF THE SHAKE WAS SO BAD, THE DEALERSHIP CHECKED IT OUT AN SAID IT WAS ICE INSIDE THE BACK OF THE WHEEL RIM, HE MELTED IT OUT AN IT WAS FIND. IT HAPPENED AGAIN LATTER ON IN THE WINTER YOU ONLY FEEL THE SHAKING IF YOU BRING THE CAR UP TO HIGHWAY SPEED,I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH WHEEL RIMS BEFORE AN I LIVE IN UPSTATE N.Y. WHERE WE GET ENOUGH SNOW. WHEN THE ICE MELTS OR BREAKS OUT OF THE BACK OF THESE DEEP DISH RIMS THE WHEELS STOP SHAKING, I CONSIDER THIS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BE FORE SOME ONE GETS INTO AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF IT. THE VEHICLE IS A 2004 TOYOTA 4WD MATRIX. *JB
WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH AND MAKING A LEFT TURN VEHICLE STALLED. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC WAS NOT ABLE TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM.*AK
CLUTCH FAILURE AT 5100 MILES; --- COMPLETE-- REPLACED BY DEALER AT 8600 MILES---- CLUTCH FAILURE. DEALER REFUSES TO DEAL WITH WARRANTY. TELLS ME THAT IT IS MY FAULT, " I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION". INDICATES THAT MY WIFE AND I ARE "RIDING" THE CLUTCH AND PERHAPS "RACING" MENTIONED VEHICLE. AFTER A COMBINED DRIVING EXPERIENCE OF NEARLY 3/4 OF CENTURY ON DRIVING MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS WITH ZERO PROBLEMS, I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THAT THE CAUSE OF MY CLUTCH FAILURES ARE MY DRIVING ABILITIES OR HABITS. DEALER SERVICE MENTIONS THAT THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF HISTORY OF COMPLAINTS AGAINST THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE. INSTEAD WISHES TO PASS THE "BLAME" AND CAUSE ONTO THE CUSTOMER. *JB
I PURCHASED A 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX ON NOVEMBER 10, 2003. THE FIRST DAY I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY WHICH HAS A SLIGHT SLOPE, THE BUMPER DRAGGED ON THE DRIVEWAY. EVEN GOING VERY SLOWLY, I REALIZED THAT THE FRONT END OF THIS VEHICLE WAS ENTIRELY TOO LOW. ON NOVEMBER 17, PULLING OUT FROM A STORE, I NOTICED IT WAS STILL DRAGGING AND THE DRIVE WAS NOT AS MUCH OF A SLOPE AS MY DRIVE. I NOTIFIED CLASSIC TOYOTA WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE ON NOVEMBER 17 ABOUT THE PROBLEM. I WENT IN TO SPEAK WITH THEM ON NOVEMBER 22 SINCE I LIVED AN HOUR AWAY. I WAS TOLD THAT ONCE I PURCHASE THE VEHICLE IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY. WHEN THEY LOOKED AT THE FRONT BUMPER, THEY NOTICED THAT IT WAS COMING A PART. I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. I TOOK IT TO THEIR PARTS DEPARTMENT. THE GENTLEMAN THERE TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE BUMPER AND HE HAD REPLACED SEVERAL. HE SAID THEY EVEN HAD TO REPLACE THE ONES ON THEIR OWN LEASE CARS AND BECAUSE OF THE CONSTANT COMPLAINTS. THIS FRONT BUMPER IS BARELY 2 INCHES FROM THE GROUND. TOYOTA TOLD ME TO JUST PARK ON THE ROAD WHENEVER TO AVOID ANY SLOOPS. I AM 20 YEARS OLD AND WAS VERY PROUD OF PAYING FOR MY FIRST VEHICLE. TOYOTA WAS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND DID NOTHING. I HAVE TAKEN ALL NECESSARY CARE TO USE MY VEHICLE IN THE MANNER IT WAS INTENDED, JUST DRIVE IT AND MY ABILITY TO DO THIS IS IMPAIRED BY THEIR DESIGN DEFECT. THE PARTS DEPARTMENT WILL CHANGE THE BUMPER OUT TO THEIR OTHER MAKE FOR THIS VEHICLE, BUT THEY ARE CHARGING ME FOR IT. *LA
