TAKATA RECALL - I RECEIVED A LETTER SEVERAL MONTHS AGO INFORMING ME MY MATRIX WAS RECALLED FOR THE AIR BAG INFLATORS. I WAS TOLD I'D BE CONTACTED WHEN THE PARTS WERE AVAILABLE. AFTER HEARING NOTHING, I WENT TO TOYOTA'S WEBSITE. IT SAYS THE PART SHOULD HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE IN MY AREA STARTING IN DEC. 2015. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER , & THEY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T DO THE REPAIR UNTIL THE END OF AUG. 2016. IT WILL HAVE BEEN ABOUT A YEAR & A HALF SINCE I WAS INFORMED OF THE RECALL - THIS IS A TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. MEANWHILE, THEY SUGGEST NO ONE RIDE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT UNTIL THE REPAIR IS COMPLETE. TOYOTA IS DOING A TERRIBLE JOB WITH THIS WHOLE THING.

TAKATA RECALL - IN JUNE 2015, I WAS NOTIFIED BY TOYOTA THAT MY MATRIX HAD BEEN ADDED TO THE LIST OF VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THE TAKATA RECALL AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT MY LOCAL DEALER TO SET UP REPAIRS. WHEN I CALLED I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTED AGAIN ONCE THE PARTS WERE AVAILABLE. I HAVE NOW RECEIVED THE NOTIFICATION THAT PARTS ARE AVAILABLE, NEARLY 10 MONTHS AFTER THE INITIAL NOTIFICATION. WHAT TROUBLES ME IS THAT IN THE LATEST LETTER IT STATES " UNTIL THIS REMEDY IS PERFORMED, WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT OPERATE THE VEHICLE WITH AN OCCUPANT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT." WHY DIDN'T THEY MENTION THIS BEFORE? WHY DIDN'T THEY PROVIDE THE REPAIRS SOONER? WHAT IF I HAD BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT WITH SOMEONE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED OR POSSIBLY KILLED. WHY ARE THESE LARGE COMPANIES ALLOWED TO PUT OTHERS AT RISK SIMPLY BY PERFORMING SOME SORT OF FAILURE ANALYSIS WHEN PEOPLES LIVES ARE AT RISK.

I RECEIVD AN INTERIM RECALL NOTICE IN JUNE 2015 FOR THE PASSENGER AIRBAG. AS OF OCT 19, 2015 THE PARTS TO REPLACE OR FIX THE RECALL PROBLEM ARE NOT AVAILABLE, AND TOYOTA CANNOT TELL ME WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE. I FIND THIS TO BE AN EXTREMELY UNREASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME, CONSIDERING IT IS A SAFETY RECALL AND THE NOTIFICATION LETTER FOR THIS RECALL RECOMMENDED THAT THE PASSENGER SEAT REMAIN EMPTY UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED.

THE REASON I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT IS I DON'T FEEL TOYOTA'S AIRBAG RECALL IS ADEQUATE. I PURCHASED A FOUR PERSON SEDAN TO CARRY FOUR PEOPLE. TOYOTA IS TELLING ME IT ISN'T SAFE FOR A PERSON TO RIDE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, BECAUSE OF THIS RECALL. I FEEL I NEED TO NOT ONLY HAVE MY VEHICLE REPAIRED BUT I NEED TOYOTA TO PURCHASE MY CAR BACK AT MARKET VALUE OR GIVE ME A LOANER THAT WILL CARRY FOUR PASSENGERS UNTIL MY VEHICLE IS FIXED. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR THEM TO ASK ME TO NOT USE MY VEHICLE FOR WHAT I PURCHASED IT FOR. I DO NOT KNOW THE EXACT DATE OR MILEAGE BECAUSE I JUST DISCOVERED THIS SITE BUT MY DEALER WOULD KNOW. MY AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT RANDOMLY COMES ON AND STAYS ON FOR SEVERAL DAYS TO A WEEK. I HAD DEALER LOOK AT IT AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO PROBLEM....JUST A FAULTY LIGHT OR SOMETHING AND NOTHING NEEDED TO BE FIXED. ALSO, CLOCK NOW WORKS OFF AND ON. I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE AFTER READING INFORMATION AT OTHER SITES, THE INFORMATION SAYS THAT THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT WORK IF THE SENSOR LIGHT IS ON. I HAVE ALSO READ THAT THE AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT AND THE CLOCK ARE CONNECTED. I DO NOT WANT TO SPEND OVER $400 TO REPLACE A CLOCK BUT IT'S A WHOLE OTHER STORY IF MY AIRBAGS WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING CLOCK THAT DOESN'T MESS UP THE AIRBAG SENSOR. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO TO ASK SINCE THE DEALER DOESN'T SEEMS TO REALIZE THIS EITHER.

I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR PASSENGER AIR BAG INFLATORS WHICH MAY BE DEFECTIVE WHEN IN CONTACT WITH MOISTURE. I RECEIVED THIS NOTICE 8/15/15 BUT THE DATE OF THE RECALL ON THE WEBSITE IS 6/15/15 - A DIFFERENCE OF 2 MONTHS! I CALLED THE TOYOTA RECALL HOTLINE AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS NO REMEDY FOR MY LOCATION, EVEN THOUGH I INFORMED THE REPRESENTATIVE THAT MY CAR WAS PURCHASED USED AND CAME FROM A BEACH AREA IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - A HUMID AND MOIST AREA. I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS NO ESTIMATED DATE WHEN PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN MY LOCATION BUT TO NOT ALLOW PASSENGERS IN THE FRONT SEAT. THIS IS CERTAINLY NOT REASONABLE AND VERY INCONVENIENT. IT IS RIDICULOUS TO HAVE A RECALL AND NOT HAVE PREPARED BY ORDERING NECESSARY PARTS. I AM EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED WITH THE "TOYOTA EXPERIENCE" AND AM MORE THAN PEEVED THAT I HAVE TO WAIT FOR WHO KNOWS HOW LONG TO FIX THE SITUATION. UNTIL THEN, WHAT DO I DO? I USE MY CAR FOR WORK AND FREQUENTLY DRIVE CLIENTS, FRIENDS AND RELATIVES TO VARIOUS LOCATIONS.

TWO MONTHS AGO, I READ A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ABOUT TAKATA AIRBAGS, SEARCHED MY VIN IN THE FEDERAL WEB SITE, AND DISCOVERED THAT MY 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX HAD BEEN RECALLED BECAUSE OF POTENTIALLY-LETHAL TAKATA AIRBAGS. I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED BOTH THE TOYOTA DEALER THAT SERVICES MY CAR, AND TOYOTA CORPORATE. THEY ASSURED ME THAT I WOULD BE RECEIVING WRITTEN INFORMATION ABOUT THE RECALL, WHICH WOULD BE MAILED OUT THAT WEEK, BUT HAD NOTHING ELSE TO OFFER IN TERMS OF ADDRESSING THE SAFETY OF MY CAR. TWO MONTHS LATER, I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA. WHEN I HAVE SPOKEN WITH THE DEALER OR TOYOTA CORPORATE, THEY TELL ME THEY HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG IT MIGHT BE BEFORE THE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE OR THE TECHNICIANS TRAINED TO REPLACE THE FAULTY AIRBAG. TOYOTA ALSO REFUSES TO PROVIDE ANY REMEDIATION IN THE MEANTIME -- NO LOANER CAR, NO DISABLED AIRBAG, NOTHING. THE ONLY REASON I KNOW THAT MY CAR -- WHICH I SHARE WITH MY SON -- IS POTENTIALLY LETHAL IS BECAUSE I HAPPEN TO HAVE CHECKED MY VIN AFTER READING AN ARTICLE IN THE NEWSPAPER. IT IS ALSO UNCLEAR TO ME WHETHER THE DRIVER OF A CAR WITH THE FAULTY AIRBAG COULD BE INJURED OR KILLED IF THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYS. TOYOTA'S INCOMPETENCE AND IRRESPONSIBILITY IN NOT NOTIFYING TOYOTA OWNERS, NOT ARRANGING FOR REPLACEMENT PARTS, NOT OFFERING ANY INTERIM REMEDIATION, AND NOT TRAINING TECHNICIANS TO MAKE NECESSARY REPAIRS IS LUDICROUS, AND, TO THE BEST OF MY UNDERSTANDING, VIOLATES FEDERAL LAW. OF COURSE I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA, BUT THIS TYPE OF POTENTIALLY LETHAL NEGLIGENCE IS NOT SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY MARKET FORCES. IT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY FEDERAL REGULATORS.

Summary

TOYOTA MATRIX RX 2005. STARTED CAR, DRIVER AIR BAG LIGHT FAILED TO EXTINGUISH. SHUT OFF IGNITION. RESTARTED ENGINE, LIGHT WENT OUT. SINCE 6/3/2013 THE DRIVER AIR BAG LIGHT HAS BEEN INTERMITTENT, STAYING ON ABOUT HALF THE TIME I START THE CAR. OFTEN IT TAKES 3 TO 4 RESTARTS TO FINALLY GET THE LIGHT TO STAY OFF. OCCASIONALLY THE DRIVER AIR BAG LIGHT WILL COME ON WHILE DRIVING. I PULL OVER WHEN I CAN AND GO THROUGH THE RESTART PROCEDURE. OTHERWISE WHILE LIGHT IS ON THE DRIVER AIR BAG IS DISABLED. THAT COULD CERTAINLY BE A DEADLY PROPOSITION. SEVERAL TIMES I HAVE VISITED TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENTS TO BE TOLD, "SOMETHING IS LOOSE", OR "CAN'T FIND A PROBLEM." TODAY, 6/17/2015, I DROVE TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR THE PASSENGER AIR BAG RECALL SERVICE. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR THE DRIVER AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. I DROVE TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPT, ABOUT 10 MILES, LEFT ENGINE RUNNING UNTIL THE SERVICE WRITER COULD VERIFY THAT THE LIGHT WAS ON. I ASKED THAT THEY CHECK THE DRIVER AIR BAG SYSTEM BECAUSE THE LIGHT CAME ON INTERMITTENTLY. APPROXIMATELY 15 MIN LATER THE ASST SERVICE MGR CALLED ME STATED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVER AIR BAG. I TOLD HIM THE WRITER VERIFIED THE LIGHT WAS ON AND REQUESTED THEY DO A DIAGNOSTIC ON THE DRIVER AIR BAG SYSTEM. $98.55 LATER THE PROBLEM WAS STATED TO BE IN THE DIGITAL CLOCK IN THE DASH. TOYOTA QUOTED $506.59 TO REPLACE THE DIGITAL CLOCK IN MY CAR TO MAKE THE DRIVER AIR BAG FUNCTION, SO I WOULDN'T DIE IN A CRASH!!! THIS JUST DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT THAT A LIFE SAVING SYSTEM SHOULD DEPEND ON A "CHEAP" DIGITAL CLOCK TO FUNCTION CORRECTLY AT ANY MOMENT WITHOUT PERIPHERAL EQUIPMENT GETTING IN THE WAY. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL ITEM.

IN MY CASE NOTHING HAS HAPPENED YET. THE REASON I AM COMMUNICATING IS BECAUSE ABOUT 8 MONTHS AGO TOYOTA SENT ME A NOTICE ABOUT THE AIR BAG OF THE MATRIX WE OWN. WE CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE LETTER WE RECEIVED FROM TOYOTA AND THEY TOOK OUR NUMBER AND TOLD US THAT THE PART TO FIX THE PROBLEM ABOUT THE AIRBAG HAD NOT ARRIVED YET AND THAT THEY WOULD CALL US WHEN THE PART WOULD COME IN. TO THIS DAY WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED THERE PHONE CALL. WE JUST RECEIVED ANOTHER LETTER FROM TOYOTA ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM AND DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT NOW. TO THE ADMINISTRATOR OF NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION: I RECEIVED THE UNDATED AIRBAG RECALL ON TOYOTA LETTERHEAD APPROXIMATELY 12-1-14. I TOOK TIME OFF WORK, MADE AN APPOINTMENT ON 12-15-14 WITH MOSSY TOYOTA, 4555 MISSION BAY DR., SAN DIEGO, CA 92019. THEY SAID THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PART, ONLY FOR GULF STATES. I RETURNED ON 1-9-15 TO HAVE MY AIRBAG DISABLED AND THE CYA WARNING SIGN INSTALLED. WITHIN A FEW DAYS THE SAME AGENCY CALLED TO LET ME KNOW TOYOTA HAS SUSPENDED REMEDIES. IN FEB. 2015 NATIONAL NEWS REPORTS ANOTHER RECALL FOR A REPLACEMENT PART I HAVE YET NOT RECEIVED. I CALLED TOYOTA CORP. OFFICE TO GET A 2 HOUR RUNAROUND, HAVING ME REPEAT MY OWNERSHIP AND VIN#, WITH THEIR MAIN EMPHASIS ON ME NAMING THE ORIGINAL OWNER, NO REPLACEMENT PARTS IN THE FUTURE, NOT THEIR PROBLEM, LETTER COMES FROM DMV INFO. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE FROM MOSSY NISSAN 2/2006 AND DO NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL OWNER INFORMATION. I DID LEARN MY AUTO WAS BUILT IN TEXAS SO IT IS CONSIDERED GULF STATE. MY COMPLAINT IS THIS: I HAVE TAKEN UNPAID TIME OFF WORK TO REMEDY A NATIONAL RECALL. I AM DRIVING A CAR THAT I CANNOT CARRY FAMILY AND FRIENDS SAFELY. I HAVE NO REMEDY GIVEN BY TOYOTA. PLEASE ASSIST IN THE SOLUTION. THANK YOU, [XXX], REGISTERED OWNER FOR 9 YEARS. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

Summary

WHILE DRIVING THE CAR STALLS. MAINLY THE ISSUE APPEARS TO HAPPEN WHEN TURNING. SUDDENLY, AND ONLY OCCASIONALLY, THE CAR DIES WHILE TURNING. ALL LIGHTS ARE LOST AND POWER STEERING GIVES OUT. SINCE THE LIGHTS ON THE CAR AND THE POWER STEERING GIVE OUT, IT IS A SCARY ISSUE. WE HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL (SINCE WE'RE DRIVING) AND RESTART THE ENGINE. BACK IN 2010 WE BROUGHT OUR CAR IN FOR THE 2010 RECALL WHERE THEY REPLACED THE PART, ALTHOUGH WE NEVER HAD A STALLING ISSUE THEN. OUR CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP BEING LOOKED AT BUT WE WERE TOLD BY TOYOTA CORPORATE THAT THIS ISN'T AN ISSUE RELATED TO THE 2010 STALLING RECALL, SO IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED EVEN IF THE SAME PART THAT WAS REPLACED DURING THE RECALL IS THE ONE THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. ADDITIONALLY, THE DEALERSHIP IS HAVING TROUBLE IDENTIFYING THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE. *TR

AIR BAG (SRS) STARTED GOING ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY, THEN CLOCK WENT ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY. NOW CLOCK RARELY COMES ON. THE IGNITION MUST BE TURNED ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES TO GET THE AIR BAG LIGHT TO GO OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A TOYOTA CARMAX DEALER IN LAUREL, MD. THE REP SAID THERE WAS PROBABLY SOMETHING UNDER THE SEAT, AND FOUND AN EMPTY WATER BOTTLE. WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED ON, THE LIGHT WAS GONE, AND HE PRONOUNCED THE CAR FIXED. TWO DAYS LATER IT CAME ON AGAIN AND HAS CONTINUED TO COME ON AND OFF RANDOMLY. THE ITEM UNDER THE SEAT STORY IS BOGUS AND ONLY WORKS BECAUSE THE IGNITION IS TURNED ON AND OFF, NOT BECAUSE ITEMS ARE UNDER THE SEAT. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED BY TOYOTA. I AM NOW READING MANY MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND TOYOTA WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THE ISSUE.

DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR IS INTERMITTENT SOMETIMES ON , SOMETIMES OFF. THIS SEEMED TO START AFTER THE 3-YR WARRANTY EXPIRED. BACK THEN, I MENTIONED IT TO A DEALER WHILE IN FOR A SEPARATE RECALL REPAIR AND THE DEALER SUGGESTED MAYBE I HAD STUFF UNDER OR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE CHAIR WHICH COULD TRIGGER THE INDICATOR. I NEVER PAID FOR THEM TO CHECK THE CAR. INDICATOR GOES ON/OFF REGARDLESS OF PASSENGER/OBJECTS ON THE SEAT. BOTH FRONT SEATS DO NOT HAVE STUFF BENEATH THEM. MORE RECENTLY, CLOCK ILLUMINATION FADES IN AND OUT, MOSTLY OUT. THIS SEEMED TO START NO MORE THAN 3 YRS AGO. CAR HAS STILL HAS ORIGINAL AIRBAGS AND CLOCK. I'M AFRAID THAT MY AIR BAGS WON'T DEPLOY DURING AN ACCIDENT. I'M ANGRY THAT MY CAR WASN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECENT RECALLS. *TR

Summary

MY VEHICLE IS A 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX XR. IT HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN A COLLISION OR IMPACT IN ANY WAY. AT APPROX. 37000 MILES, THE SRS WARNING LIGHT ACTIVATE AND WAS DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY SPIRAL CABLE/CLOCKSPRING. THE SPIRAL CABLE WAS REPLACED WHICH DID ELIMINATE THE SRS WARNING LIGHT. I NOW HAVE 60500 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE AND AGAIN THE SRS LIGHT HAS ACTIVATED, AND HAS AGAIN BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH A FAULTY SPIRAL CABLE, THE REPAIR COST HAS NOW BEEN ESTIMATED BY MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AS $440.71, AND THEY HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE SRS SYSTEM WILL NOT FUNCTION UNTIL THE REPAIR IS MADE. I NOW HAVE MY 2 SONS, NEW DRIVERS, THAT USE THIS CAR. I FEAR THAT EVEN IF I GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED, AGAIN, THAT IT WILL AGAIN FAIL AT SOME POINT WHILE IN USE AND PUT THEM AT RISK. I HAVE OWNED MANY VEHICLES THAT HAVE HAD SRS SYSTEMS, BUT THIS IS THE ONLY TIME I'VE EVER HAD A PROBLEM, LET ALONE A REPEAT PROBLEM, WITH A SPECIFIC COMPONENT. IN MY RESEARCH, IT SOUNDS LIKE MANY OTHER TOYOTA MATRIX AND OTHER TOYOTA MODELS IN THE SAME YEARS OF PRODUCTION ARE EXPERIENCING SPIRAL CABLE/CLOCKSPRING PROBLEMS. THIS PROBLEM CAN EFFECT THE SURVIVABILITY OF THE OCCUPANTS AND TRULY CONCERNS ME. THANKS SO MUCH FOR CONSIDERING MY CONCERNS. *TR

WE HAVE BROUGHT IT IN TO SEVERAL MECHANICS FOR CHECKS AND VARIOUS REPAIRS, TO NO AVAIL. MOST RECENTLY, A DEALER SHOP DIAGNOSED THAT THE ECM IS LIKELY FAILING, AND IN LOOKING AT THE RECORDS FROM ANOTHER DEALER SHOP NOTICED THAT THE ECM WAS ON BACK ORDER IN 2011 TO INSTALL A NEW ONE AFTER A RECALL, BUT THAT A NEW ONE WAS NEVER INSTALLED. HOWEVER, MY SERVICE RECORDS SHOW THAT THE FIRST DEALER SHOP TOLD ME (FRAUDULENTLY?) THAT IT WAS IN FACT INSTALLED. THE CAR MAY NOT BE SAFE TO DRIVE, BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL TO THIS POINT IN GETTING IT REPAIRED. THE SECOND SHOP INFORMED ME THAT THE FIRST DEALER SHOP IS RESPONSIBLE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ONE MORNING AND I HEARD A LOUD GRINDING AND WHINING SOUND COMING FROM WHAT SOUNDED LIKE THE ENGINE. I THEN GOT BACK IN AND PUT IT IN GEAR TO GO AND NOTHING I WOULD LET OUT THE CLUTCH AND IT WOULDN'T MOVE. I TRIED TO PUT IT IN REVERSE TO MOVE IT OUT OF THE STREET AND WHEN I WOULD LET OFF THE CLUTCH IT WOULD POP OUT OF GEAR IT WOULDN'T STAY IN REVERSE. I HAD TO GET IT TOWED AND FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS MY TRANSMISSION. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. EVIDENTLY TOYOTA MADE A BAD DESIGN WITH THE 5 SPEED TRANSMISSION AND ONE OF THE BEARINGS DOSE NOT GET LUBRICATED AND BURNS OUT FALLING APART AND RUINING THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. I RECENTLY FOUND THIS OUT SO HAD IT CHECKED OUT. TURNS OUT IT IS A FAULTY CLOCK. TOYOTA HAS THE CLOCK AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THEIR AIR BAGS. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THEY PUT MY FAMILY AT RISK BECAUSE OF A CLOCK. IT COST ME $560 TO FIX AS WELL. THERE WAS NEVER ANY ASSISTANCE ON TOYOTA'S PART TO ASSIST ME, LOWER THE COST. ON JULY 17, 2013, MY CAR HAS MADE SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF ENGINE SHUTTING OFF EITHER AT INTERSECTONS, OR WHILE IN MOTION. GOOD THING IT DOES START BACK UP BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL AUTO SHOP AND IT WAS DIAGNOSE AS CODE TO REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT AND GASKET COOLANT SENSOR. TWO WEEKS LATER, ENGINE SHUT-OFF AGAIN WHILE DRIVING SEVERAL TIMES. RETURN IT BACK TO THE LOCAL AUTO SHOP AND HAD THEM LOOK AT IT AGAIN. THEY FOUND NO OTHER PROBLEMS. HOWEVER, THEY INFORMED ME TO TAKE IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, AS THE ECM MAY BE AT FAULT. ON JULY 31, 2013, TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE AND AFTER SEVERAL HOURS, THEY INFORMED ME IT WAS A FAULTY BATTERY.! MY BATTERY IS ONLY THREE YEARS OLD AND I KNOW ITS NOT THE BATTERY, AFTER TELLING THEM TO CHECK THE ECM. THEY WOULDN'T PROCEED UNTIL I BUY A BATTERY FROM THEM! ON 8/30/13, TOOK MY CAR TO ANOTHER AUTO SHOP FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AND EXPLAINED "THE ENGINE TURNS OFF WHILE DRIVING" ISSUE AGAIN. THEY DIAGNOSE AS CARBON BUILDUP AND DID A THROTTLE BODY CLEANING. NOW ITS 9/6/13, AND PROBLEM OF ENGINE STALLING STILL PERSISTS!. ONE DAY, THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF THREE TIMES WHILE DRIVING. SUBSEQUENTLY, TOYOTA HAS ANOTHER SECOND RECALL ON LEXUS AND RAV4 MODELS THIS WEEK. THE ECM WAS RECALLED AND REPLACED ON MY CAR ON 8/31/11. CAN THE ECM BE FAULTY AGAIN! THE ODOMETER ON MY 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX WILL NOT ADVANCE PAST 299,999 MILES. I HAVE CHECKED ON LINE AND HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE MATRIX. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND WAS REFERRED TO MY DEALER. I WORKED WITH THE GENERAL MANAGER WHO SAID THAT HE HAD RECENTLY SEEN A PRIUS WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THE GENERAL MANAGER TOLD ME THAT TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND THAT WHOEVER DESIGNED/ENGINEERED THE ODOMETER ARBITRARY DECIDED TO STOP THE ODOMETER READING AT 299,999. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT ISSUE FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1. I AM UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE NORMAL SERVICE INTERVALS FOR THE VEHICLE. THIS INCLUDES: A. INTERVALS FOR OIL CHANGES B. OTHER SERVICES SUCH AS OTHER FLUID CHANGES, ETC CAN NOT BE TRACKED OR DETERMINED WHEN THEY ARE DUE. C. INTERVALS FOR TIRE ROTATION. I. MY TIRES HAVE A WARRANTY THAT IS PRO-RATED ON MILEAGE. THAT WARRANTY IS NO LONGER OF USE TO ME IN THAT I CAN NOT PROVIDE THE CORRECT MILEAGE. II. THE DEALER THAT I PURCHASED THE TIRES FROM OFFERS FREE ROTATION BUT I CAN NO LONGER ACCESS THAT SERVICE IN THAT THE MILEAGE DOES NOT ADVANCE PAST THE 299,999 MARK. 2. MY STATE REQUIRES THAT THE MILEAGE BE STATED WHEN A CAR IS SOLD. I CAN NO LONGER GIVE THAT INFORMATION ACCURATELY. 3. ACCORDING TO THE GENERAL MANAGER OF MY DEALER, IF I WERE TO TRADE IN THIS MATRIX, I WOULD HAVE THE TRADE IN VALUE DECREASED BECAUSE I COULD NOT PROVIDE AN ACCURATE ODOMETER READING. 4. IF THE VEHICLE IS DAMAGED IN AN ACCIDENT, LAW ENFORCEMENT AND MY INSURANCE COMPANY CAN NOT DETERMINE THE CORRECT MILEAGE. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT MY CAR IS THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE, AS STATED ABOVE. THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON FOR THIS ODOMETER TO STOP AT 299,999. THIS IS PURELY A DESIGN/ENGINEERING DECISION, NOT A WORN OUT PART. I REQUEST THAT YOUR AGENCY INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE.

MY CAR DIED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A SATURDAY. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM, THEY CONFIRMED IT WAS DUE TO THE RECALL ON THE ECM [1ZZ-FE], YET I HAD TO PAY TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED IN. THEY SAID THEY WOULD RUN TEST TO CONFIRM THAT WAS THE PROBLEM THEN FIX IT. 3 HOURS LATER THEY CALLED AND SAID THAT CHANGING THE COMPUTER PART THAT WAS RECALLED COULD FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY - I ASKED FOR A LONER CAR SINCE IT WAS NOT MY FAULT I WOULD BE WITHOUT A CAR, THEY SAID THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT. THEY WOULD DO AN EMERGENCY ORDER AND THE PART WOULD BE IN ON TUESDAY - THEY WOULD CALL ME IN THE MORNING. ON TUESDAY THEY DIDN'T CALL I HAD TO CALL, I HAD TO CALL MULTIPLE TIMES TO REACH ANYONE, AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE PART, IT WAS BACK-ORDERED AND COULD BE UP TO A FEW WEEKS. I AGAIN PUSHED FOR A LONER CAR, THEY SAID THEY WOULD SEE IF THEY COULD AUTHORIZE IT AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING. IN THE MORNING THEY HAD SOMEHOW MANAGED TO FIND A PART, PUT IT IN, I WAS THEN TOLD THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MY CAR WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION BEFORE THIS, THERE IS NO WAY THE FUEL SYSTEM MIRACULOUSLY WENT BAD AT THE EXACT SAME TIME THAT THE RECALLED PART WENT OUT - IT HAD TO BE CAUSED BY THE COMPUTER FAILURE. BESIDES THAT I WAS TOLD THAT THE COMPUTER PART WAS THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH MY CAR. THEN THEY TRIED TO OVERCHARGE MY BY $600 FOR THE FUEL SYSTEM, ALL THE WHILE STILL NOT GIVING ME A LONER CAR. IN SUMMARY MY CAR DIED ON MY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, I HAD TO PAY FOR MY TOWING, MISS HOURS OF WORK, BE CARELESS FOR 6 DAYS AND PAY FOR A NEW FUEL SYSTEM ALL THANKS TO THE RECALLED PART. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE PARTS THAT WERE DAMAGED BY THE RECALL PROBLEMS.

2005 TOYOTA MATRIX. CONSUMER STATES UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED AS HE WAS APPROACHING A RED TRAFFIC SIGNAL TO A LOCAL SHOPPING CENTER, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO ACCELERATE. SINCE HE WAS NEARING A RED LIGHT, HE ALREADY HAD HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CONSUMER STATED IT WAS OBVIOUS SOMETHING WAS WRONG, SO HE IMMEDIATELY PLACED THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL. THE RPM OF THE VEHICLE'S TACHOMETER RACED BETWEEN 3,000 AND 4,000. WHEN THE TRAFFIC LIGHT TURNED GREEN, HE PLACED THE GEAR IN DRIVE, KEPT HIS FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE AND MANEUVERED THE VEHICLE INTO THE PARKING LOT AND INTO A PARKING SPACE. HE PLACED THE GEAR INTO PARK, BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV BETWEEN 3,000 AND 4,000. HE KICKED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IN AN ATTEMPT TO POSSIBLY LOWER THE RPM, BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE CONSUMER TURNED OFF THE ENGINE, EXITED THE VEHICLE AND PROCEEDED TO INSPECT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AREA FOR POSSIBLE SIGNS OF OBSTRUCTION ON THE FLOOR, IN THE CARPET AREA OR ON THE FLOOR MAP. THERE WAS NONE. HE OPENED THE HOOD OF THE CAR AND LOOKED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FOR POSSIBLE SIGNS OF DEBRIS, BUT THERE WAS NONE. 1) I TOOK MY 05 TOYOTA MATRIX INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A 60,000 MILE CHECK UP. I HAD PURCHASED THE 100,000 MILE WARRANTY WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT. I WAS BILLED $700.00, AND TOOK THE VEHICLE HOME. 2) I TOOK THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTAT TO WORK AND NOTICED A VERY BAD 'SHIMMY', AND THE VEHICLE DRIFTED TO THE LEFT. A DEFINITE ALIGNMENT PROBLEM. I WAS VERY UPSET AT SPENDING $700, TO HAVE THE VEHICLE RETURNED IS WORSE CONDITION THAN WHEN I TOOK IT IN. FOR THE CHECK UP. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME THEY "ADJUSTED" THE ALIGNMENT, AND RETURNED THE CAR TO ME. I TOOK THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTATE AND FOUND I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK THE NEXT DAY TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DELERSHIP TOLD ME THAT 'CENTERING RINGS' WERE NOT PUT ON THE RIMS INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE. I HAD CENTERING RINGS PUT ON THE VEHICLE, AND TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE PROBLEMS TO BE FIXED. THEY RETURNED THE VEHICLE THE NEXT DAY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSATE AND FOUND I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS. I RETURNED THE VEHICLE THE NEXT DAY. I INFORMED THE DEALERSHIP THAT I WENT ON-LINE AND FOUND OTHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS. IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT A 'SHIM KIT'COULD HELP. THE DELALERSHIP TOLD ME I HAD THE 'WRONG' TIRES ON THE VEHICLE, ALTHOUGH THEY WERE VIRTUALLY NEW. THEY SAID I NEEDED "DIRECTIONAL" TIRES. I PURCHASED AND INSTALLED NEW DIRECTIONAL TIRES. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP INSTALLED A SHIM KIT, WHICH HELPED BUT DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEMS. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY DID ALL THEY COULD DO. THEY DID NOT LIST THE SHIM KIT ON THEIR REPAIR PAPERWORK FOR THE VEHICLE. I HAD NO PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE BEFORE TAKING IT IN FOR THE CHECKUP. THIS IS EVIDENTLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, WHICH A 'QUICK FIX' WAS DONE AT THE TIMEOF MANUFACTURE. IT DID NOT ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM. IT ONLY "HID" THE PROBLEM. MY VEHICLE STILL HAS A SHIMMY AND ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS. *TR

REQUEST TO THE GOVERNMENT: PLEASE LOOK INTO SUSPENSION PROBLEMS IN THE 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX AND SIMILAR TOYOTAS THAT CAUSE IRREGULAR AND PREMATURE TIRE WEAR, INCLUDING "CUPPING" WHICH COULD LEAD TO UNEXPECTED TIRE FAILURE AND WHICH CAUSE OWNERS TO BE REQUIRED TO REPLACE TIRES PREMATURELY. I EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM, FIRST NOTICED BY LOUD, UNEXPECTED TIRE NOISE. I HAD TO REPLACE 4 TIRES AT 30,000 MILES, FAR EARLIER THAN EVER IN MY 50 YEARS OF DRIVING EXPERIENCE. A DEALER UNOFFICIALLY ADMITTED THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH MATRIX SUSPENSION. THE INTERNET HAS MANY ANGRY OWNERS DESCRIBING THE PROBLEM (UNDER T. MATRIX TIRE PROBLEMS, AND SIMILAR). TOYOTA NEVER ADMITTED THE PROBLEM WAS FAULTY DESIGN, BUT IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS, THIS CLEAR FAULT SHOULD ALSO BE INVESTIGATED. THIS IS A DEFECT THAT MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO DANGEROUS EVENTS AT WORST AND EXTRA EXPENSE COMMONLY. THANKS *TR

SOMETIMES WHEN I RELEASE THROTTLE WHEN SHIFTING OR AT A STOP SIGN THE THROTTLE MECHANISM LOCKS UP SOLID AS IF I COULD ALMOST BREAK IT WHEN ATTEMPTING TO INCREASE THROTTLE FROM NO THROTTLE POSITION. I COASTED FROM 65MPH TO 40MPH WITH TRAFFIC BEARING DOWN FROM BEHIND ONE TIME. I THOUGHT THE CABLES WERE BINDING BUT BOUGHT A NEW ONE TO REPLACE WITH BUT THE CABLE LOOKS GOOD AND IN MY DRIVEWAY COULD NOT SIMULATE OR DETECT THE CAUSE OF STICKING. I CALLED TOYOTA SERVICE REP IN SAN BERNARDINO, CA AND HE SAID "WE ARE GOING TO CHARGE YOU IF WE LOOK AT IT" THE THROTTLE LOCKED UP AGAIN ON THE 8TH OF THIS MONTH AT THE STOP SIGN WHEN EXITING THE FREEWAY. *TR

05MY TOYOTA MATRIX - IRREGULAR WEAR OF TIRES POSSIBLY DUE TO FRONT SHOCKS. BRAND NEW TIRES DON'T LAST MORE THAN A FEW YEARS ON THESE VEHICLES. THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET YET TOYOTA HAS NOT ISSUED A TSB FOR THIS ISSUE. IT'S NOT THAT THE TIRES HAVE LOTS OF TREAD WEAR, BUT THEY WEAR UNUSUALLY AND LEAD TO VIBRATION - EVEN AFTER THEY ARE MAINTAINED AND BALANCED. ADDITIONALLY, I RECENTLY REPLACED MY 4 TIRES THAT HAD UNUSUAL AND IRREGULAR WEAR. WITH THIS WEAR, THE VEHICLE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES SIGNIFICANTLY ABOVE 50MPH. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS COMPLAINT FOR A POSSIBLE SAFETY RECALL. FRONT SHOCKS SHOULD BE COVERED UP TO 80K SINCE MOST OF THE 05'S ARE ALMOST OUT OF WARRANTY. AGAIN TREAD WEAR IS STILL GOOD, BUT IT'S THE WAY THAT THE TIRES WEAR THAT IS THE ISSUE. *CN

I OWN A 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX. ON 10/29/09 THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE WHOLE COMPUTER SYSTEM. MECHANIC SAID THAT THEY HAD TROUBLE WITH ALOT OF THE MATRIXS AND COROLLAS. COST ME ABOUT $1000.00 TO REPLACE. MY CLOCK HAS BEEN COMING ON EVERY SO OFTEN,BUT MOSTLY STAYS OFF.THE DOORS ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO LOCK IF KEY IS IN IGNITION OR RUNNING. THREE TIMES IT HAS LOCKED ME OUT. THE DASH BOARD LIGHTS ARE MEDDED UP ONLY HALF LIGHT UP,THIS HAS BEEN THIS WAY FOR WELL OVER A YEAR. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHEN I HAD THE WORK DONE THEY NEVER FIXED IT. I THINK THAT SOMEONE SHOULD LOOK INTO THIS MATTER BECAUSE IF THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE COMPUTER ON SO MANY CARS THEY SHOULD HAVE A RECALL. ALSO, MY PEDAL GOT STUCK AND CAUSED ME TO RUN INTO A SNOW BANK AND MESS UP MY FRONT FENDER. *TR

WHILE DRIVING MY 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX WITH 40,000 MILES, I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE, CAR WAS NOT EVEN GOING 1 MILE AN HOUR, HAD TAKEN MY FOOT OFF OF THE GAS PEDAL, DID NOT EVEN HAVE A CHANCE TO PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES, WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED, MADE A NOISE, JUMPED THE CURB AND SMASHED INTO A BUILDING. THE CAR HAD $3,000 WORTH IN DAMAGES LEAVING A CRACK IN THE BRICK WALL OF THE BUILDING CAUSING STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. THE SUDDEN, UNINTENDED ACCELERATION HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FLOOR MAT. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE AS TOYOTA WOULD NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE AT ALL, SAYING THAT THE MATRIX WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. TOYOTA HAS NOT ACCOMMODATED ME AT ALL WITH THIS INCIDENT. I AM TERRIFIED WHEN I DRIVE NOW THAT IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN, NOT TO MENTION THE WORTH OF THE CAR BECAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. DUE TO THIS I AM LOOKING FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE. *TR

Summary

THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT STARTED COME ON MY 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO, AND THE WARNING LIGHT USUALLY WENT OFF IF I RE-STARTED THE ENGINE. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER TO CHECK THE AIRBAG SYSTEM ON 2007, BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS. MY CAR ALREADY HAD OVER 36,000 MILES ON THAT TIME, THUS THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED. THE WARNING LIGHT STILL CAME ON AND OFF OCCASIONALLY THEREAFTER. IN MARCH 2008, I HAD AN ACCIDENT WHEN I LOST THE CONTROL OF THE CAR DURING THE SNOWSTORM, AND I HIT THE FIRE HYDRANT AT A SPEED OF 35 MILES (MY CAR HAD 42000 MILES ON) THE CAR SUSTAINED A SEVERE FRONTAL DAMAGE, BUT THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOYED AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. IT COST MY INSURANCE OVER $9000 FOR THE REPAIRS. I IMMEDIATELY SUSPECTED THAT THERE MUST BEEN A COMPLETE AIRBAG SYSTEM FAILURE ON MY CAR SINCE THE WARNING LIGHT HAS BEEN COME ON/OFF , SO I CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE IF THEY CAN FIX THE FAULTY AIRBAG SYSTEM UNDER THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. I HEARD "NO" AND TOLD THAT I HAD TO PAY FROM MY OWN POCKET IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM. THE LIGHT SOMEHOW DISAPPEARED SOMEHOW SINCE THEN, SO I DID NOT BOTHER TO BRING THE CAR TO THE DEALER. HOWEVER, I HAD ANOTHER ACCIDENT IN APRIL 2009 WHEN I HIT THE DEER ON THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY IN NJ. THE CAR SUSTAINED ANOTHER FRONTAL DAMAGE, AND CAR WAS NON-DRIVABLE. ONCE AGAIN, THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOYED AT ALL ALTHOUGH I WAS DRIVING AROUND 55 MILES. IT COST MY INSURANCE OVER $4000 TO REPAIR. MY AIRBAG WARNING LIGHTS STARTED TO COME UP AGAIN RECENTLY, AND IT GOES AWAY IF I RE-STARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN. I CHECKED MANY CAR SITES ON THE INTERNET, AND IN MY SURPRISE, I READ SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS ON THEIR VEHICLES (05 MATRIX). I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH TOYOTA'S AIRBAG SYSTEM, AND I'M NOT FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE THIS CAR ANYMORE. SOMEONE REALLY NEED TO INVESTIGATE ON TOYOTA VEHICLES AND ISSUE A NATIONAL RECALL ON THEIR VEHICLES BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *TR

FAILURE OF RETENTION SYSTEM FOR FRONT RIGHT INNER FENDER/SHIELD. THERE IS ONLY ONE RETENTION POINT AT FRONT (ON BUMPER). WHEN FAILS, SHIELD/INNER FENDER BEHIND FRONT BUMPER DRAGS ON GROUND. HOLE FOR RETENTION PIN HAS ONLY ABOUT 1/4 INCH OF MATERIAL TO REAR OF HOLE - THE PLASTIC SPLITS. DID NOT SPLIT IN RESPONSE TO HITTING ANYTHING - CAR WAS SITTING IN DRIVEWAY WHEN FAILED. WHEN TOOK TO DEALER (STILL UNDER WARRANTY), OFFERED CHOICE OF CABLE TIE REPAIR (FREE) OR REPLACEMENT OF ENTIRE INNER FENDER ASSEMBLY ($211). CHOSE CABLE TIE, ALTHOUGH DEALER ALSO LEFT ROPE REPAIR I HAD INSTALLED TO HOLD UNTIL GETTING TO DEALER. DEALER INDICATED ROPE SHOULD STAY - HARDLY A REAL REPAIR. LEFT SIDE FAILED PREVIOUSLY - HAD TO PERSONALLY REPLACE RETENTION PIECES. DEALER SERVICE REP INDICATED THAT THEY SEE A NUMBER OF MATRIX XR AND XRS MODELS WITH SAME PROBLEM, DUE TO GROUND EFFECTS INSTALLED ON THOSE MODELS. SEEMS TO STRONGLY IMPLY A DESIGN DEFECT. *TR

I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX WITH 88K MILES. THE ECM IN THE VEHICLE(MODEL 89661-01132) DIED. THE DEALER SAYS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS SERIES OF ECM PARTS AND THEY WILL INSTALL A NEW "UPDATED" VERSION (MODEL 89661-02K41) FOR A MERE $650. FROM SEARCHING ONLINE IT APPEARS TO BE A FAIRLY WIDESPREAD PROBLEM AMONG TOYOTA MATRIX OWNERS AND YET TOYOTA HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THESE FAULTY ECMS AND THE DEALER IS REFUSING TO REPLACE ECM OUTSIDE OF THE FEDERALLY MANDATED WARRANTY PERIOD. ALL AUTO MANUFACTURERS ARE REQUIRED BY THE EPA TO WARRANTY ECMS TO 80K MILES BUT THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A HUGE PROBLEM AND TOYOTA IS FAILING TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR A SHODDY BATCH OF ECMS. *TR

THE REAR SEAT PASSENGER-SIDE AND DRIVER-SIDE RESTRAINTS ARE POORLY DESIGNED AND AS SUCH, THEY DO NOT PROVIDE ANY LATERAL SECURITY NEAR THE DOORS FOR SMALL PASSENGERS. MY SIX YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OF AVERAGE SIZE USUALLY FALLS BELOW THE SHOULDER RESTRAINT WHEN SHE FALLS ASLEEP. WHEN SHE AWAKES AND LIFTS HER TORSO, THE SHOULDER RESTRAINT OFTEN ENDS UP BEHIND HER TORSO! THIS RENDERS THE SHOULDER RESTRAINT COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING INJURY TO THE UPPER TORSO OR HEAD IN ANY SIGNIFICANT COLLISION. HER HEAD ENDS UP RESTING ON THE DOOR AND THIS IS POTENTIALLY DEADLY IN A SIDE-IMPACT CRASH. *TR

TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP IN JULY, 2006, BECAUSE THE A/C WAS BLOWING HOT, A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD COME ON, AND IT WASN'T ALWAYS STARTING, AND/OR SPUTTERING WHILE DRIVING. THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, A NEW A/C CONTROL SWITCH, AND A SENSOR IN THE ENGINE BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD NOT GO OFF AND THEY COULD FIND NOTHING ELSE WRONG. REPAIRS OCCURRED OVER A TWO WEEK PERIOD WITH ME HAVING TO RETURN THE CAR TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE FOR THE SAME THREE COMPLAINTS A TOTAL OF THREE TIMES- A/C BLOWING HOT, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, AND SPUTTERING WHEN DRIVING/HESITATION WHEN STARTING. I ALSO HAVE A FOURTH COMPLAINT OF A POPPING NOISE IN THE ENGINE WHICH TO DATE HAS NEVER BEEN RESOLVED. I ALSO HAD A 30K MILE SERVICE DONE AT THIS TIME. PROBLEMS BEGAN TO REOCCUR THE FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER 2006, AND I MADE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT WITH A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP. TOOK THE CAR IN, THEY HAD THE CAR FOR THREE DAYS AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE ANY OF THE PROBLEMS I WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT. I WAS DISSATISFIED BY THE LACK OF SERVICE BOTH ON THE CAR AND CUSTOMER RELATED. PICKED THE CAR UP WITH NO DIAGNOSIS OR REPAIRS HAVING BEEN MADE. WITHIN FOUR DAYS, THE CAR BEGAN ACTING UP AGAIN AND SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY ON THE FLORIDA TURNPIKE RESULTING IN A TOW 35 MILES BACK TO MY HOUSE AND THEN ANOTHER 15 OR SO MILES TO THE DEALERSHIP. DETERMINED THE PROBLEM TO BE "ENGINE SLUDGE" AND AS IT STANDS RIGHT NOW I AM BEING TOLD THAT THE ENTIRE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. MY PROBLEM HAS NOT REACHED A FINAL RESOLUTION/DECISION WITH TOYOTA BUT I AM DISGUSTED BEYOND BELIEF ABOUT THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE. *NM

I AM REPLACING MY CLUTCH ON MONDAY FOR $900.00, AND THE MECHANIC I AM SEEING JUST REPLACED A CLUTCH ON THE SAME MAKE/MODEL/YEAR/TRIM AS MY CAR. I'VE ALSO SEEN VARIOUS OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE. CLUTCH IS DEFECTIVE. *JB

I WAS DRIVING AND DISCOVERED THE A/C IN MY BRAND NEW 2005 TOYOTA (STILL UNDER WARRANTY) MATRIX WAS BLOWING WARM AIR INSTEAD OF COLD. I TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. AFTER LOOKING OVER THE VEHICLE, THE DEALERSHIP GAVE ME A DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR PRICE. THE DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSIS WAS "A ROCK HAD BOUNCED UP INTO THE ENGINE AND PENETRATED THE CONDENSER" DEALERSHIP INFORMED MY PART AND LABOR WASN'T COVERED BY MY WARRANTY. I POINTED OUT IT WAS A DESIGN FLAW BECAUSE NO PROTECTION (I.E. SHIELD) TO THE A/C CONDENSER. FILE COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA OF TORRANCE CA AND GIVEN A CASE NUMBER. DEALERSHIP CONTINUES TO SAY WARRANTY DOESN'T COVER THE REPAIRS. I POINTED OUT THE LACK OF PROTECTION AND DESIGN FLAW. *NM

WE OWN A 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX AWD XR WITH A FACTORY INSTALLED MOON ROOF. IT HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER 2 TIMES FOR A RATTLE IN THE ROOF. 1ST DIAGNOSIS: FOUND ROOF SUPPORT TO BE SLIGHTLY LOOSE DUE TO LACK OF SPOT WELD, BENT LIP OF SUPPORT DOWN AND APPLIED FOAM TO ALL POINTS OF CONTACT. 2ND DIAGNOSIS: SUPPORT BRACES ARE LACKING INSULATION AND SEALER, CAUSING THEM TO BE NOISY OVER BUMPS. VEHICLE IS BACK FROM THE 2ND REPAIR AND STILL HAS THE RATTLE NOISE. WE ARE CONCERNED THAT THE ROOF SUPPORTS NOT BEING CORRECT IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS MAY MAKE THE CAR LESS STRUCTURALLY SOUND NOW OR IN THE FUTURE AS THE INSULATION WEARS DOWN. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THIS LACK OF INSULATION A PROBLEM THEY HAVE BEEN SEEING IN THE CARS. *JB

I WAS HALTED IN THE LEFT TURN LANE OF A 6 LANE HIGHWAY BEHIND ANOTHER CAR ALSO WAITING TO TURN. MY CAR(1,600 MILES) WAS IDLING IN DRIVE. SUDDENLY THE ENGINE BEGAN RACING AND BY VIRTUALLY STANDING ON THE BRAKE I PREVENTED FORWARD MOVEMENT AND AFTER A FEW SECONDS I SLIPPED IT INTO NEUTRAL. WHEN I DID THAT, THE ENGINE SEEMED TO RACE ALL THE MORE - VIRTUALLY SCREAMING. I FINALLY THOUGHT TO TURN THE IGNITION OFF. THE CAR PROMPTLY RESTARTED AND THE PROBLEM DID NOT RECUR AGAIN. THE POTENTIAL FOR A SERIOUS ACCIDENT FROM THIS PROBLEM IS HUGE. *JB

DT: THE CLUTCH WAS DIFFICULT TO DEPRESS/TO ENGAGE THE STARTER. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WHEN TRYING TO WORK THE CLUTCH BECAUSE THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH ROOM IN THE FLOOR AREA ,AND THE WHEEL WELL MADE A HUMP IN THIS AREA. ALSO, THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED WITH A FOOT REST THAT THE CONSUMER HAD REMOVED BECAUSE IT MADE IT MORE DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE STALLED. TWICE IT PUT THE CONSUMER IN DANGEROUS SITUATION ALTHOUGH, THERE WERE NO ACCIDENTS. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN AUGUST 2004. THE SECOND TIME WAS IN SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER 2004. WHEN THE CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO A DEALER THEY BASICALLY TOLD HIM THEY COULD NOT FIND THE STALLING PROBLEM. WHEN HE CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, THEY TOLD HIM BASICALLY THE SAME HING. THE CONSUMER STATED HE BELIEVED THAT THE AREA PROBLEM WAS A DESIGN FLAW. *AK

I PURCHASED MY 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX 5/7/05. 1 WEEK AFTER I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE I EXPERIENCED A INTERMITTENT STARTING PROBLEM. EVEN AFTER 4 ATTEMPTS BY TOYOTA TO FIX THE PROBLEM IT IS STILL CURRENT. IT USUALLY HAPPENS MORE OFTEN WHEN THE ENGINE IS WARM. IT USUALLY CRANKS 5-10 SECONDS BEFORE STARTING. SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START AT ALL AND I HAVE TO TURN THE KEY BACK AND RETRY TO START THE VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE CLAIMS THEY CANNOT GET THE PROBLEM TO DUPLICATE WHEN THEY HAVE THE VEHICLE IN THEIR POSSESSION BUT WHEN I LAST HAD MY CAR THERE THE CAR TOOK ABOUT 7 SECONDS TO START AND THE SERVICE MANAGER CLAIMS THAT IS NORMAL FOR THE MATRIX ENGINE TO CRANK. I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE WITH A BRAND NEW VEHICLE.*JB

Summary

I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX XR WITH 16" ALLOY WHEELS. I HIT A COBBLESTONE SIZED ROCK IN THE ROCK WITH THE LEFT REAR WHEEL AT ABOUT 50 MPH. THE TIRE LOST PRESSURE BECAUSE THE ALLOY WHEEL SPLIT IN HALF LIKE A BAGEL SLICED DOWN THE MIDDLE. TOYOTA WOULD NOT FIX THIS AS A WARRANTY ITEM INDICATING THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. HOWEVER, NONE OF THE SERVICE PERSONNEL HAD EVER SEEN A WHEEL SPLIT IN HALF. I'VE CONTACTED TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER AND REPORTED THE INCIDENT BUT THEY ALSO INDICATE THIS IS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE AND REFERRED ME TO THE DEALER CUSTOMER RELATIONS MANAGER WHO GIVES THE SAME EXPLANATION. I BELIEVE THERE MAY BE A DEFECT IN THESE ALLOY WHEELS BUT HAVE FOUND NO OTHER REPORTS OF SUCH DAMAGE ON THE NHTSA SITE. I WANT TO MAKE SURE THIS INCIDENT IS DOCUMENTED IN CASE THESE WHEELS ARE FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE.

MY WIFE BOUGHT A NEW 2005 TOYOTA MATRIX ON JULY 24, 2004. FIVE DAYS LATER, WITH ONLY ABOUT 85 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AS SHE WAS AT A STOP LIGHT. WHAT WAS WORSE, SHE WAS ON A HILL AND THE CAR STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS. *AKWE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER THAT DAY AND THEY FOUND THAT THE ACTUATOR HAD FAILED AND WAS LEAKING. WE DON'T MIND WAITING FOR THE SPARE PART TO COME IN AND EVERYTHING IS UNDER 100% WARRANTY. HOWEVER, THE 2004 COROLLA THEY GAVE HER AS A LOANER, WITH ABOUT 1,200 MILES ON IT, ALSO HAD THE SAME FAILURE ON JULY 30TH. WE RETURNED THAT CAR TODAY ALSO. *AK
