Summary

The Undercarriage of my 2007Toyota 4runner sport has irregular rusting issue. The truck has 128,000 miles on it and has been well maintained and garaged most of its life. I was under it the other day to check the exhaust system and noticed the frame is rusting like no other car I know of. Even cars that sat in junkyards for decades. I know they had a recall for similar issues with other vehicles within the same year. However, when I spoke with Toyota they were uninterested in helping me and told me it was my problem. Other than the frame rust the truck is in perfect condition. Is this something that you can help me with. I see I am not alone having this issue and that it is well reported. Please let me know what my options are for getting this defect corrected by Toyota. Thanks, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Recently bought this. Owner said there was a recall about it. There isn’t, at least yet. The front passengerside & back driverside doors won’t unlock remotely. That could be a problem after an accident or if needing to enter the car immediately. I haven’t taken it anywhere, but it is available to be inspected. There weren’t any lights/warnings indicating a problem. The date & mileage listed is current. I don’t know when it actually started.

RECENTLY LOOKED AT 2007 TOYOTA 4RUNNER LIMITED V8 FOR SALE TO REPLACE MY 2005 LIMITED THAT HAS SEVERE FRAME CORROSION AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS VEHICLE TOO HAS NEARLY THE EXACT SAME CORROSION ISSUES. THE REAR OF THE FRAME BY THE BUMPER, WHERE THE CONTROL ARMS AND RADIATOR ARE ATTACHED TO THE CHASSIS AND FRAME RAILS ARE SO BADLY CORRODED YOU CAN PUSH YOUR FINGER THROUGH THE METAL. HOW MUCH MORE EVIDENCE DOES NHTSA NEED TO DEMAND TOYOTA RECALL THESE VEHICLES? LOOK AT THE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS TO NHTSA AND THOUSANDS OF OWNERS ONLINE POSTING PICTURES AND VIDEOS OF THEIR VEHICLES RUST ISSUES. THERE IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES CORRODING JUST LIKE THE OTHER TOYOTA BODY ON FRAME PRODUCTS THAT WERE RECALLED FOR FRAME REPLACEMENTS. WE OWN TRUCKS 30-40 YEARS OLD AND NOT ONE OF THEM HAS EVER HAD A FRAME RUST THROUGH TO THE POINT YOU CAN LITERALLY POKE HOLES IN IT WITH YOUR FINGER. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE ON A VEHICLE 10-15 YEARS OLD. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

VEHICLE HAS PREMATURE EXCESSIVE RUST OF THE FRAME AND ASSOCIATED COMPONENTS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE SAME RECALL MY 05 SEQUOIA (AS WELL AS TACOMAS AND TUNDRAS) OF THE SAME ERA SINCE ALL WERE MANUFACTURED WITH THE SAME PROCESS THAT LACKED ADEQUATE APPLICATION OF RUST PROTECTION/COATING. MANY OTHERS ON HERE AS WELL AS ONLINE ON OTHER SITES ALSO ARE REPORTING THIS GENERATION OF 4RUNNER TO HAVE RUSTING. I HAVE RUSTED MOTOR MOUNTS THAT CAUSE MOTOR VIBRATION, RUSTED BRACKETS HOLDING MY GAS TANK TO THE FRAME, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL TRANSMISSION LINES DUE TO RUST THAT LEFT ME STRANDED WHILE MOVING ACROSS THE COUNTRY. I HAVE HAD TO DO REPLACE SEVERAL RUSTED PARTS LIKE CV AXELS, WHEEL BARRINGS, AND POSSIBLY RUSTED STEERING BOX LEAK/RACK AND PINION (CONFLICTING INFO FROM2 MECHANICS SO UNDETERMINED). I PURCHASED THIS IN 2014 AND JUST PAID IT OFF AND NEED HELP AS IT SHOULD HAVE LASTED ME MORE THAN 7 YRS AND SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS KIND OF RUST IN YRS 7-11 AFTER BEING MADE! IT HAS LOW MILES AND SHOULD HAVE LASTED MANY YEARS TO COME. EVERYTHING ELSE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION BUT THIS FRAME ISSUE THEY EXCLUDED THIS MODEL FROM NEEDS TO BE EXTENDED FOR 4RUNNERS IN THE SAME GENERATIONS OF THE RECALL MENTIONED ABOVE. THIS IS LEAVING MANY DRIVERS WHO PAID THE EXTRA PRICETAG TO HAVE A TOYOTA LEFT WITH A FINACIAL LOSS OF PURCHASE AS WELL AS LOSS OF USE OF A VEHICLE. PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE COMPLAINTS. SOME ARE MISLABELED ON THIS SITE BUT DESCRIPTIONS SHOW IT IS A FRAME ISSUE THAT CAUSES MANY SECONDARY ISSUES/RELATED REPAIRS. I HAVE TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF THIS VEHICLE AND JUST OUT A LOT MORE MONEY INTO IT AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH REPAIRS SINCE NO ONE SAID IT WAS RUSTED LIKE THIS. AFTER MOVING, I HAVE HAD 3 NON-DEALERSHIP MECHANICS TELL ME IT IS BAD. PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH AN UPDATE.

MY REAR WINDOW SHATTERED AFTER USING THE DEFROSTER. ONCE I GOT OUT OF MY CAR AFTER PARKING IT IN MY JOB'S GARAGE IT BUSTED ON IT'S OWN. I FOUND OUT THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY 4TH GENERATION 4RUNNER OWNERS BUT TOYOTA WON'T RECALL OR EXTEND THE WARRANTY FOR THIS ISSUE ANY LONGER. NOW I HAVE TO EITHER NEVER USE MY REAR DEFROSTER AGAIN WHILE LIVING IN COLORADO OR RISK IT SHATTERING AGAIN AND HURTING PASSENGERS IN MY CAR. HE TRIED TO DRIVE IT INTO HIS SHOP (TWO DRIVEWAYS AWAY) BUT ENDED UP HAVING TO DRAG/TOW IT IN BECAUSE THE FRONT END FRAME HAD RUSTED AND FALLEN FROM THE VEHICLE. THAT BODY SHOP LOOKED AT IT AND I ALSO GOT A SECOND OPINION AND THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING. THE FRONT END OF THE CAR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE FRONT STEERING RUSTED SO BADLY IT DISCONNECTED COMPLETELY AND FELL OUT FROM THE FRAME. IT IS ALSO SO RUSTED THERE IS NOT ENOUGH METAL TO RE-WELD IT TOO. THE CAR IS TOTALED WHEN THE CAR HAS BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED. IT WAS TERRIFYING AND WAS LUCKY I HAPPENED TO ONLY BE GOING 25 MPH DOWN A STRAIGHT ROAD AND NO ONE WAS HURT. THE CAR THAT WAS RUNNING GREAT AND WAS WELL MAINTAINED IS NOW NOT DRIVABLE OR EVEN FIXABLE AND MY CHILD AND MYSELF WERE IN SERIOUS DANGER. EVERY MECHANIC IS TELLING ME THIS IS A FAULT COMMON IN TOYOTAS AND IS A PROBLEM WITH THE FRAME AND SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED. THE HATCH LATCH HAS MELTED AND PRESENTS PROBLEMS IN UNLATCHING. THE DEALER DENIES THIS IS A PROBLEM. ESPECIALLY IN COOLER WEATHER, I AM OFTEN NOT ABLE TO OPEN THE REAR HATCH. MY RESEARCH INDICATES THAT MANY OWNERS OF THIS MODEL EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUES. THERE IS SOME CONCERN THAT THE CAUSE IS FAULTY WIRING THAT OVERHEATS THE MATERIAL. ALSO, THE REPLACEMENT PART IS THE SAME AS THE ORIGINAL; THEREFORE, NOT RESOLVING THIS ISSUE. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY CONCERN AND SHOULD BE REMEDIED BY THE MANUFACTURER.

I HAVE A TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 2007 4X4 V6 WITH ABOUT 90K AND SEEM TO HAVE DEVELOPED THE RUMBLE STRIP ISSUE AS WELL. I AM CURIOUS IF THE OP HAS GOTTEN ANY TRACTION ON GETTING ANYTHING FIGURED OUT. IT SEEMS LIKE IT MUST BE THE "LOCK UP" FEATURE OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER IN 4TH AND 5TH GEARS. THE VIBRATION COMES ON AT THE END OF 3RD GEAR WHEN THE RPMS ARE ABOUT 2K OR SO. THEN AGAIN AS IT TRIES TO SHIFT UP TO 5TH. IN OUR CASE AS WELL, PUTTING THE TRANS IN '4' INSTEAD OF 'D' TOTALLY ELIMINATES THE PROBLEM. I WONDER IF SOME SORT OF REFLASH COULD FIX THINGS. MY CURRENT PLAN IS TO DOUBLE CHECK THE LEVEL ON THE FLUID AND BE SURE THE ZERKS ARE ALL LUBE UP. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THIS HAS COME UP AS WE LOVE THE CAR OTHERWISE. IF SOMETHING DOES NEED FIXING, I AM IN NO HURRY TO HEAD TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND I AM AFRAID THAT A MORE LOCAL TYPE TRANSMISSION SHOP WILL NOT HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE WITH THESE NEW SUPER FANCY SEALED TRANSMISSIONS. I HOPE THAT I AM WRONG.

Summary

MY 2007 TOYOTA 4-RUNNER HAS A SERIOUS DRIVE SHAFT JOLT AND CLUNK THAT OCCURS WHENEVER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LURCH. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS AT APPROXIMATELY 6500 MILES IN MY SIX YEAR. TOYOTA HAS BEEN INFORMED OF THIS SEVERAL TIMES AND REFUSES TO TAKE ACTION. APPROXIMATELY 3 WEEKS AGO, THE VEHICLE DID THIS ON THE FREEWAY AT HIGHWAY SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LUNGE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. TOYOTA WAS AGAIN NOTIFIED OF THIS AND REFUSED TO TAKE ACTION. ADDITIONALLY MY 4 RUNNER IS SUDDENLY GETTING THE "VSC TRAC" AND "VSC OFF" LIGHTS IN THE DASH AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS, WHICH ACCORDING TO TOYOTA OWN MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES PROCEDURE AS DESCRIBED IN TSB BR001-04 TO SOLVE THE "VSC TRAC" AND "VSC OFF" LIGHTS AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS, THE 4 RUNNER ONLY REQUIRES THE TOYOTA OBDII TESTER WHICH TAKES ONLY ABOUT 5 MINUTES TO DO, FOR A SIMPLE CALIBRATION MATTER, OF TELLING THE 4RUNNER VSC/TRAC COMPUTER "THE YAW RATE AND DECELERATION RATE ARE CURRENTLY ZERO" AND TO SAVE THE ASSOCIATED VALUES. THEN THE OUTPUT FROM THE SENSORS CAN BE INTERPRETED CORRECTLY. I HAVE GONE TO THREE DEALERS AND ALL WANT TO CHARGE ME IN EXCESS OF $600.00. THE LAST DEALER CONTACTED MADE ME COME IN, AND AFTER 35 MINUTES BILL ME FOR BASIC OIL CHANGE IN AMOUNT OF $74.00, AND SAID I SHOULD NOT WORRY ABOUT THE LIGHTS WHICH CONTINUE TO SHOW ON THE DASH. INDEED THIS IS RIP OFF BY BOTH TOYOTA AND ITS DELERSHIPS.

IN 2014 NOTICED BRAKE FLUID LEAKING FROM CALIPER AND DISCOLORING WHEELS. DEALER SERVICE VERIFIED FRONT CALIPERS FROZEN (GUIDE PINS AND PADS RUSTED IN PLACE AS WELL AS CALIPER PISTONS). THIS APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW AS THE CALIPER DOES NOT INCORPORATE ANY PROTECTIVE BOOT FOR THE GUIDE PINS OR ANY INTERFACE BETWEEN THE PAD SHOE AND THE CALIPER BODY. THE CALIPER BODY AND GUIDE PIN APPEAR TO BE EASILY OXIDIZED, A FACT THAT TOYOTA ATTRIBUTES TO "ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS". APPARENTLY TOYOTA DESIGNS FOR THE MILDEST CONDITIONS RATHER THAN THE HARSHEST. ODDLY, IT IS ONLY THE FRONT CALIPER WITH THIS DESIGN: THE REAR CALIPER INCORPORATES A MORE MODERN DESIGN WITH A BOOT FOR THE GUIDE BOLT. *TR

OVER THE PAST 9-12 MONTHS I HAVE OWNED THE 4RUNNER, I HAVE NOTICED THE FLOORMATS SLIDE UP BEHIND THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATION PEDAL WHEN I AM CONSTANTLY SWITCHING BETWEEN THE TWO (EG. I USUALLY AM ABLE TO PULL THEM BACK DOWN AT A STOPLIGHT OR STOP SIGN; HOWEVER, ON TUESDAY, JULY 29TH, I WAS INVOLVED IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT THAT WAS NOT ONLY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, BUT WHILE ON A 200+ MILE TRIP AS WELL. I BELIEVE THAT THE FLOOR MAT CAUSED MY CAR TO HAVE LIMITED BRAKING ABILITY IN ADDITION TO POSSIBLE INCREASED ACCELERATION. THE NHTSA'S FINDINGS SEEM TO BE CONSISTENT WITH THIS. ADDITIONALLY, THE COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10384563 STATES THAT "I PUSHED ON THE BRAKE... BUT THE CAR CONTINUED ACCELERATING" AND THEN "TOYOTA INSPECTED THE VEHICLE... I DO NOT LIVE BY THE OCEAN OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT TO CAUSE RUST AND IN THE WINTER TIME, THE TRUCK IS GARAGE KEPT. AFTER HEARING FROM A NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, CALLING TOYOTA TO FIND OUT THAT THEY HAVE NO RECALL, I TOOK THE CAR TO AN AUTO BODY SHOP. THE EXPERT LOOKED AT THE RUST, WENT TO SCRAPE IT, AND THE EXTERIOR CRUMBLED IN CREATING A DECENT HOLE. THE EXPERT SAID THAT THERE WAS NO REASON FOR A TRUCK THIS AGE SHOULD HAVE THIS PROBLEM. HE CALLED TOYOTA TO COMPLAIN SAYING THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM TOYOTA SHOULD FIX, BUT THEY SAID THEY HAD NO RECALL ON THE ISSUE. THE EXPERT TOLD ME THAT THE CAR WAS RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE AND IS EATING AWAY AT THE LAYERS OF PAINT. HE SAID I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CAUSE. HE ALSO SAID THAT HE COULD FIX IT AT A HIGH PRICE, BUT THAT MAY NOT EVEN SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I AM FILING THIS BECAUSE THERE IS NO REASON A CAR 6 YEARS OLD AND WELL KEPT SHOULD BE RUSTING AND FALLING APART. *TR

MACHINES BREAK BUT WHEN PARTS REPRESENT A RISK OF FATALITY, THEY SHOULD BE MORE CLOSELY SCRUTINIZED. I GOT LUCKY WHEN THE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY WENT OUT IN MY 2007 TOYOTA 4RUNNER WHILE IT WAS PARKED AND RUNNING IN MY GARAGE FOR 5 MINUTES WHILE I UNLOADED IT. HAD I NOT MADE THE DECISION TO LET THE CAR RUN WHILE I UNLOADED IT, A DECISION THAT I FIRST QUESTIONED, IT MORE THAN LIKELY WOULD'VE GONE OUT THE FOLLOWING MORNING WHEN I PULLED OUT OF MY STEEPLY SLOPED DRIVEWAY. A DROP OF ABOUT 10-15 FEET IS DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM MY DRIVEWAY AND THERE IS NOTHING TO STOP ANYTHING FROM ROLLING DOWN THAT DROP BESIDES THE MULTITUDE OF HARDWOODS THERE. I COULD'VE BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE OR TRAVERSING THE HILLS AND SLOPES THAT WE DEAL WITH DAILY. A PARKING BRAKE WILL ONLY DO SO MUCH. MY 4RUNNER IS WELL-MAINTAINED. IN FACT, IT HAD RECEIVED IT'S REGULAR MAINTENANCE ONLY 5 DAYS PRIOR TO THE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY'S FAILURE. THERE WAS NO WARNING;NO NOISE, NO FEELING, NO WEIRD BEHAVIOR-JUST BUZZERS AND WARNING LIGHTS AFTER THE FACT. THE CAR ALMOST ROLLED THROUGH THE GARAGE DOOR AS WELL AS THE HOUSE. IT TOOK ALL OF MY MIGHT TO STOP IT AT 1-3 MPH. I AM GRATEFUL FOR WHAT DID NOT HAPPEN BUT CONCERNED ABOUT ANY OTHER UNSUSPECTING 4RUNNER OWNER AND ANYONE AROUND THAT 4RUNNER IF THE SAME HAPPENS. I'VE BEEN HAPPY WITH MY 4RUNNER AND FELT SAFE IN IT UNTIL JULY 21. IT IS MY THIRD 4RUNNER IN A ROW. THEY ARE FANTASTIC SUV'S. I HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH MY DEALERSHIP, ESPECIALLY MY SERVICE TECH, WHO I FEEL LOOKS OUT FOR ME AND MY 4RUNNER. BUT AFTER RESEARCHING BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLIES IN 4RUNNERS, I SEE MULTIPLE CRASHES AND SCARY STORIES INVOLVING THIS PART. I SEE IT IS UNRELATED TO MILEAGE OR MAINTENANCE OR VEHICLE AGE. IT'S HAPPENED AT 2MONTHS OLD, 2 YEARS OLD, 200K MILES. THE RISK OF FATALITY IS TOO HIGH TO LET THIS ISSUE REMAIN UNATTENDED TO. *TR

Summary

THE BACK, TRUNK HANDLE SWITCH CONSISTS OF A BLACK, RUBBER TYPE OF MATERIAL THAT MELTS EVERY SUMMER. I LIVE IN TEXAS SO SUMMERS CAN GET EXTREMELY HOT. SO, IT HAS MELTED/GOTTEN HOT TO THE POINT WHERE IT ALMOST BURNED ME AND MY HUSBAND'S FINGERS. ADDITIONALLY, IT WILL LEAVE BLACK STAINS ON OUR FINGERS REGARDLESS OF THE WEATHER. THIS IS NOT ONLY AN INCONVENIENCE BUT ALSO A HAZARD. I'M CURRENTLY TRYING TO GET IT FIXED AT THE DEALERSHIP. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD THAT THE PART THAT WOULD REPLACE IT IS THE SAME MATERIAL. SO, I'M WRITING THIS TO HOPEFULLY GET A RESPONSE FROM TOYOTA TO REPLACE THESE HANDLES WITH ANOTHER TYPE OF MATERIAL. I'VE RESEARCHED ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS NOT ONLY WITH 4RUNNERS THAT THIS HAPPENS ON BUT ALSO SIENNAS. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO EXPERIENCE THIS WITH ANY VEHICLES WE PURCHASE REGARDLESS OF WHERE WE LIVE. TOYOTA SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND NOT EXPECT CUSTOMERS TO JUST FIX IT ON THEIR OWN, NOT TO MENTION REPLACE IT WITH THE SAME SWITCH THAT WE HAD ISSUES ON TO BEGIN WITH. *TR

Summary

WHILE TRAVELING UNDER CRUISE CONTROL AT 55- 60 MPH ON A RURAL 2 LANE HIGHWAY IN NC, I CAME UPON A VEHICLE IN MY LANE TRAVELING AT A SLOWER RATE OF SPEED. AS I APPROACHED THE VEHICLE, I ACCELERATED TO PASS. WHILE PASSING I COULD TELL THAT THE VEHICLE FELT LIKE IT WAS MOVING FASTER THAN THE 60 - 65 MPH IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOR THE AMOUNT OF GAS I GAVE IT, BUT I WAS CONCENTRATING ON COMPLETING THE PASS AND DID NOT LOOK AT THE SPEEDOMETER. AFTER PASSING AND PULLING BACK INTO MY LANE, I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN. MY VEHICLE SLOWED SLIGHTLY BUT FELT ODD, LIKE IT WAS PULLING. WHEN I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE, MY VEHICLE BEGAN RAPIDLY ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN, QUICKLY GETTING TO ABOUT 70 - 75 MPH BEFORE I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE AGAIN. AGAIN THE VEHICLE SLOWED SLIGHTLY BUT FELT ODD, LIKE IT WAS PULLING. WHEN I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE, MY VEHICLE AGAIN RAPIDLY ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN, AT WHICH POINT I REALIZED SOMETHING WAS WRONG AND DEPRESSED THE BRAKE HARDER. THE VEHICLE PULLED HARDER THIS TIME AND STARTED VIBRATING SEVERELY. I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE AND THE VEHICLE AGAIN BEGAN ACCELERATING. I SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AND BROUGHT THE CAR TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. OVER THE NEXT ~ 20 MINUTES I TRIED ~ 4 - 5 TIMES TO CRANK THE CAR. EACH TIME THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY REVVED SUCH THAT THE TACHOMETER ALMOST INSTANTLY HIT RED ZONE, AND I CUT THE ENGINE OFF. I CALLED TOYOTA'S "800" PHONE NUMBER, AND THEY TOLD ME TO GET THE CAR TO A TOTOTA DEALER. BEFORE CALLING A TOW TRUCK, I TRIED CRANKING THE CAR ONE MORE TIME, AND THAT TIME THE ENGINE CRANKED NORMALLY.

Summary

I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN ACCELERATION ON 10-5-10 IN MY 2007 TOYOTA 4RUNNER, 4WD. AS I WAS TURNING ONTO A BUSY STREET AT AN INTERSECTION WITH LIGHTS, I PUSHED ON THE BRAKE AT THE STOP SIGN AS THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC APPROACHED, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED ACCELERATING INTO THE LANE AT THE INTERSECTION, AND I PUSHED AS HARD AS POSSIBLE ON THE BRAKE. I PUSHED THE GEAR LEVER FORWARD AS THE ONCOMING CAR VEERED INTO THE NEXT LANE TO AVOID ME. CONTINUING TO PUSH ON THE BRAKE, I SHIFTED INTO REVERSE, BUT THE ACCELERATION WAS STILL ACTIVE AND MY TIRES SQUEALED IN REVERSE, SO I SHIFTED DOWN INTO NEUTRAL AND STOPPED, AND THE TRAFFIC HAD STOPPED ALSO. SINCE THE ACCELERATION STOPPED I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE NORMALLY, AND THERE WAS NO COLLISION, THANKFULLY. TOYOTA INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AS USUAL, FINDING NOTHING, AND SAID THEY ADJUSTED THE MAT AND THAT WAS THAT. I EMAILED THE GENERAL MANAGER ABOUT MY SITUATION AND HE SAID HE WOULD LOOK AT IT AGAIN. I SAID I AM AWARE OF THE INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL ACCELERATOR AND WOULD LIKE TO HAVE HIM BUY MY 2007 AND SELL A 2011 4RUNNER WITH THE "SMART PEDAL" TECHNOLOGY. HE AGREED AND NOW I OWN A NEW 2011 4RUNNER. *TR

Summary

MY VEHICLE, 2007 TOYOTA 4RUNNER, HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING SOME ISSUES WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW FREEZING. LIVING IN MAINE, THIS HAPPENS MORE OFTEN THAN ANY HUMAN WOULD LIKE. IN ANY EVENT, MY HVAC BLOWER MOTOR CONTINUES TO LITERALLY FREEZE UP AND WILL NOT WORK. TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A TSB (AC002-07) ON THIS EXACT ISSUE. SINCE MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY I'M TOLD BY THE LOCAL DEALER AND BY TOYOTA DIRECTLY THAT I NEED TO ASSUME ALL COSTS FOR REPAIR, YET IF THE VEHICLE WAS "IN WARRANTY" THESE REPAIRS WOULD BE COVERED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN IN WARM CLIMATES FOR THE DURATION OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND THIS ISSUE WAS NOT DISCOVERED UNTIL A RECENT MOVE. I'M UNCLEAR HOW THIS ISSUE IS NOT SEEN AS A DIRECT SAFETY ISSUE AND HAS NOT BECOME A STANDARD VEHICLE RECALL FOR REPAIR. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW WITH THE VEHICLE WHICH CAN IMPAIR THE VEHICLE'S ABILITY TO PERFORM SAFELY. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN MY VEHICLE IN OVER A WEEK DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE IN A FREEZING COLD VEHICLE, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, I CANNOT GET AIR MOVEMENT TO DEFROST MY WINDSHIELD. WITH NO HEAT, OR THE ABILITY TO DEFROST YOUR WINDSHIELD IN INCLEMENT WEATHER THERE EXISTS AN ABSOLUTE SAFETY ISSUE. ADDITIONALLY, I HAVE A 20 MONTH OLD CHILD AND OPERATING A VEHICLE WITH NO MECHANISM FOR WARMING ITSELF IS IN MY EYES "UNSAFE" THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AN CONSIDERATION.

Summary

MICE HAVE INFILTRATED THE HEADLINER AREA OF 2007 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER. THEY BUILT A NEST AND CHEWED THE WIRING INSULATION FOR THE SUNROOF SWITCH WHICH CAUSED A SHORT THAT MELTED THE WIRES AND CAUSED THE SUNROOF TO MALFUNCTION. DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE SWITCH AND REPAIRED THE WIRES FOR $360 SINCE THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. AFTER EXPLORING THE INTERNET OTHER PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS ON HONDA AND SEVERAL OTHER MODELS. SOME OF THE CONVERSATIONS REFERRED TO THE WIRING INSULATION BEING MADE OUT OF SOY BASED MATERIAL. IS THERE ANY IDEA WHY/HOW ARE THEY PAST THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND INTO THE HEADLINERS AND CABINS? COULD THERE BE A DESIGN FLAW? FROM READING THE POSTS A STRONG POSSIBILITY EXISTS FOR ACCIDENTS TO BE CAUSED BECAUSE MICE ARE RUNNING ACROSS PEOPLE'S FEET, ETC. WHILE THEY ARE DRIVING. HEALTH CONCERNS HAVE ALSO BEEN RAISED DUE TO ODORS AND FECES BY THE MICE, SOME OF THESE INFILTRATION SOUND PRETTY BAD ALL OF WHICH CANNOT BE ATTRIBUTED SOLELY TO THE OWNERS. THERE'S NOT MUCH THAT CAN BE DONE TO KEEP THEM OUT OR SO IT SEEMS. *TR

I WAS WAITING IN LINE OF TRAFFIC TO PICK UP MY DAUGHTER AT SCHOOL. CAR WAS IN DRIVE, MY FOOT WAS FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY RACED AND THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD ABOUT 10 FEET. I STOMPED HARDER ON THE BRAKES AND THE CAR DID STOP, BUT AT NO TIME HAD MY FOOT EVER LEFT THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND WAS NOT EVEN REMOTELY TOUCHING THE GAS. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THE CAR HAD BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND, BUT WHEN THE INCIDENT WAS OVER, I REALIZED THAT WAS NOT THE CASE. MY WIFE OBSERVED THE INCIDENT FROM THE PASSENGER SEAT AND CONCURS THAT MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE THE WHOLE TIME. SHE LATER CHECKED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE MAT HAD NOT SHIFTED TO PRESS ON THE GAS, BUT CONFIRMED THAT NOTHING WAS IN CONTACT, OR EVEN NEAR THE GAS PEDAL. MY WIFE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER THE SAME DAY TO CHECK THE COMPUTER CODES, BUT NOTHING WAS RECORDED IN THE HISTORY. DEALER WAS UNABLE TO OBSERVE THE PHENOMENON. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT COME ON. I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW IN OCTOBER 2007. MILEAGE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT WAS 19,912. *TR

Summary

DRIVING A 2007 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 V6 4 WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE ON A HIGHWAY AT THE SPEED LIMIT OF 70 MPH. IN THE LEFT LANE (4 LANE HIGHWAY). I SLOWED DOWN TO CHANGE LANES ENTERING THE RIGHT LANE, I THINK APPLYING THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER. AS I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AGAIN IN THE RIGHT LANE, I LET UP ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SO AS TO NOT EXCEED THE SPEED LIMIT BUT IT DID NOT COME BACK UP WHEN MY FOOT DID, AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT SLOW DOWN NORMALLY AS IT SHOULD BUT RACED AHEAD. I QUICKLY LOOKED TO SEE IF MY FLOOR MAT HAD CAUSED THE PEDAL TO STICK WHICH I OBSERVED IT DID NOT. I THEN APPLIED THE BRAKES TO TRY TO SLOW THE VEHICLE YET THE VEHICLE WAS STILL ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO SOMEWHAT SLOW DOWN AND GUIDE THE VEHICLE ONTO AN EXIT RAMP TO MY RIGHT, ALL THE WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD TO KEEP CONTROL OF THE CAR. I GUIDED IT ONTO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RAMP OUT OF THE TRAFFIC PATH AND QUICKLY MOVED THE GEAR FIRST TO NEUTRAL THEN TO PARK. THIS STOPPED THE VEHICLE BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RAPIDLY REV. I THEN IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. THE WHEELS WERE POINTED STRAIGHT AHEAD, AND I AVOIDED ANY KIND OF CRASH OR INJURY. THEN I TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY LIGHTS. I LET THE VEHICLE SIT OFF FOR A MINUTE OR SO, THEN LEAVING THE VEHICLE IN PARK I TURNED ON THE IGNITION AGAIN UPON WHICH THE ENGINE REVVED AS HIGH AS BUT DID NOT MOVE. SO I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION FOR GOOD AND CALLED A NEARBY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR HELP WHO SWIFTLY AND SEAMLESSLY RESPONDED TO MY VEHICLE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE IS PRESENTLY BEING EXAMINED BY THIS DEALERSHIP AND THE CAUSE AND REMEDY ARE YET TO BE DETERMINED. THE DEALERSHIP RESPONDED BY SENDING A TOW TRUCK TO BRING MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND SAID THEY WOULD CONTACT THE LOCAL POLICE TO LET THEM KNOW SUCH HAD BEEN ARRANGED. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHO INDICATED WHEN THE REAR SEAT WAS FOLDED AND THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT TOUCHED THE REAR SEAT, THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG BECOMES DEACTIVATED. THE OWNER MANUAL ALSO INDICATED IN PAGE 92 OF THIS CHARACTERISTIC. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THIS WAS THE WAY THE AIR BAG SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED. THE DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDED WHEN THE SPACE WAS REQUIRED FOR CARGO INSTEAD OF FOLDING THE REAR SEAT, IT SHOULD BE REMOVED OR THE FRONT SEAT SHOULD BE PULLED FORWARD TO AVOID CONTACT WITH THE REAR SEAT, HOWEVER THIS SUGGESTION WAS NOT PRACTICAL BECAUSE IT MADE THE PASSENGER VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, BUT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS AIR BAG DEFECT. UPDATED 12/28/2006 - *NM
