FIRST LONG TRIP SINCE I BOUGHT THE USED TRUCK, A TRIP TO OAKRIDGE, 90 MILE ROUND TRIP FROM HOME. THE TRUCK MADE IT BACK TO OUR DRIVEWAY, THEN WHEN I PUT ON THE BREAK FOR MY HUSBAND TO GET OUT, IT WOULD NOT MOVE AND ALL THE DASH LIGHTS CAME ON. I COULDN'T BUDGE THE TRUCK. IT WAS LOCKED UP. COULDN'T MOVE THE STICK. THE ENGINE QUIT. FORCED IT INTO PARK AND TRIED TO RESTART, BUT NOT A SOUND. THE NEIGHBOR CAME OVER WITH HIS CODE READER. IT SAID P1000. BATTERY CHECKED GOOD, GOT A NEW ONE ANYWAY BECAUSE ITS AGE. GROUNDS WERE GOOD, BUT CLEANED ANYWAY. HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER. THEY PUT A NEW TRANSMISSION IN.

AROUND MARCH 23, 2020 I NOTICED MY DRIVERS SEAT MOVING WHEN I ACCELERATE OR SLOW DOWN. I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS LOOSE HARDWARE SO I WAS GOING TO TIGHTEN THE MOUNTING BOLTS OVER THE WEEKEND. WHEN I STARTED TO TIGHTEN THE HARDWARE I FOUND IT WAS ALL TIGHT. BUT THE SEAT CONTINUED TO MOVE ABOUT. THAT WEEKEND I REMOVED THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND FOUND THE FRONT RIGHT MOUNTING POINT TORN OUT OF THE SHEET METAL. THE THREADED RE-ENFORCEMENT TAB HAD TORN THROUGH THE SHEET METAL USED AT THE SEAT MOUNTING POINT. I REMOVED THE TAB FROM THE SEAT AND NOTICED THAT THE SPOT WELDS HAD NOT FAILED IT WAS THE SHEET METAL BRACE BRACKET, IT WAS ATTACHED TO, THAT HAD FAILED. I FIRST NOTICED THE MOVEMENT WHILE HEADING HOME FROM WORK AND ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. I WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN FROM A 2 LANE SIDE ROAD TO A 6 LANE DIVIDED CITY ROAD. IN THE TIME THAT I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE IT HAS NEVER BEEN WREAKED, AND TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE GOTTEN SEVERAL REPAIR ESTIMATES FROM COLLISION SHOPS. UNIVERSALLY ALL OF THE SHOPS CLAIMED TO HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS KIND OF DAMAGE. *TR

RADIATOR THAT CONTROLS THE TRANSMISSION COOLANT LET GO CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION COOLANT TO MIX WITH THE ENGINE COOLANT. I HAD THE TRANSMISSION REPAIRED AT NEW RIVER NISSAN BACK IN 2018. BEFORE I HAD NISSAN REPAIR IT I HAD TAKEN IT TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP WHERE IT WAS FLUSHED OUT AND A SMALL RADIATOR ADDED TO THE TRUCK BECAUSE OF THE RADIATOR GOING BAD . THE TRUCK HAD LESS THAN 80,000 MILES ON IT AND LESS THAN A 9 YEARS. AS THE RECALL WAS ADDED TO THAT AFTER ALL THE PROBLEMS FROM THE RADIATOR. I FILL LIKE I SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR EVERYTHING THAT I PAID OUT WHICH WAS ABOUT 3500.00 TOTAL. BUT NOW IT'S STILL MIXING COOLANT AFTER BEING SERVICED BY A NISSAN DEALER.

HAVING CHECKED VARIOUS WEB SITES I NOTICE THAT THIS HAS BEEN A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. MY QUESTION IS: IF NISSAN HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, WHY HAS A RECALL NOT BEEN ISSUED? ALSO, WHY SHOULD OWNERS BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FOOTING THE BILL FOR REBUILDING THE TRANSMISSION? DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS, I WILL BE CONTACTING THE FEDERAL TRANSPORTATION AGENCY THAT PROVIDES OVERSIGHT OF VEHICLE SAFETY AND RECALLS. IT IS UNSATISFACTORY THAT NISSAN DOES NOT OWN UP TO IT'S RESPONSIBILITIES!

I THEN HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NISSAN DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN SAID THAT THIS IS CAUSED BY A FAULTY HOSE ON RADIATOR AND IT WAS HAPPENING TO A LOT OF FRONTIERS AND XTERRAS. WHEN MY HUSBAND QUESTIONED THE TECH ON THIS BEING A RECALL HE STATED THAT IT SHOULD BE, BUT IS NOT BECAUSE IT DOES NOT CAUSE A SAFETY ISSUE. HE TOLD US WE WOULD NEED A NEW RADIATOR, HOSES, AND TRANSMISSION. THE TRUCK BREAKING DOWN IS A SAFETY ISSUE! WE THEN HAD OUR TRUCK TOWED TO OUR NORMAL MECHANIC AND HE IS REPAIRING IT NOW.

MY NISSAN DEALER TOLD ME TODAY THAT THE TIMING CHAIN ON THE 4.0L V6 ENGINE IN MY TRUCK REQUIRES REPLACEMENT. THIS TRUCK HAS LESS THAN 60,000 MILES ON IT AND THE DEALER CHARGES $2,140 FOR THE WORK. TIMING CHAINS ARE NORMALLY EXPECTED TO LAST FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. FAILURE OF THE TIMING CHAIN WOULD DESTROY THE ENGINE AND, IF IT OCCURRED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. NISSAN HAS KNOWN ABOUT A DEFECTIVE TIMING CHAIN PROBLEM ON THIS AND RELATED ENGINES SINCE AT LEAST 2004, YET THEY CONTINUED TO USE THOSE DEFECTIVE TIMING CHAINS UNTIL APPROXIMATELY 2010. NISSAN SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL AND REPLACE THE CHAINS UNDER WARRANTY.

Summary

THIS IS IN REGARDS TO AN ITEM ALREADY UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE NHTSA. I AM ANOTHER VICTIM OF NISSAN'S LEAKING TRANSMISSION COOLER LEADING TO A CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSOIN FAILURE. MY TRANSMISSION LOCKED IN SECOND GEAR UPON ACCELERATING FROM A STOP SIGN. FORTUNATELY I WAS 1/2 MILE FROM MY HOME ON A SIDE STREET AND NOT ON THE INTERSTATE WHERE SUCH A PROBLEM COULD LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. CONSUMERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. THE FIX IS RELATIVELY CHEAP BEFORE THE TRANSMISSION COOLER BEGINS TO LEAK. UNFORTUNATELY CONSUMERS ARE UNAWARE OF THE ISSUE UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE, AND THE REPAIR REQUIRES A NEW TRANSMISSION AND RADIATOR COSTING $5000 TO $6000. ALTHOUGH NO WRECK WAS INVOLVED IN MY INCIDENT, THE POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT IS DEFINATELY PRESENT IF SUCH A FAILURE WHERE TO HAPPEN ON A CONGESTED INTERSTATE.

Summary

WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND BEING DRIVEN DOWN A CITY STREET OR HIGHWAY AND MAKING A TURN THE TRANSMISSION GOES FROM IN FORWARD MOTION (DRIVE) TO NEUTRAL (NO MOTION, BUT ACCELERATION OF ENGINE CONTINUES) FOR A PERIOD OF 5-8 SECONDS, AND THEN THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGES INTO FORWARD MOTION (DRIVE) WITH A LARGE JERKKING MOTION OR THUD. THIS HAPPENS AT STOP LIGHTS, AND WHILE IN MOTION CROSSING HIGHWAYS, CITY STREETS, AND WHEN IN MOTION MAKING TURNS ON HIGHWAYS AND CITY STREETS, OR FROM STOPLIGHTS. CAUSE IS UNKNOWN, HAVE NOT FOUND A MECHANIC WHO CAN DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE, HAVE HAD TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGED WITH NO IMPROVEMENT IN THE PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS AT LEAST THREE TO FIVE TIMES PER WEEK.

1) $1473 TO REPLACE TIMING CHAIN SYSTEM @ 53,610 MILES 2) NISSAN HAD ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN NTB09-128 REVEALING A KNOWLEDGE OF THE ISSUE ON AT LEAST 3 MODELS OVER A 5 YEAR PERIOD OF TIME 3) CALLED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO CHECK ON REIMBURSEMENT SINCE NISSAN KNEW IT WAS A PROBLEM. IN FAIRNESS, THEY RESPONDED WITHIN 24 HRS. ONLY TO TAKE LESS THAN 1 MINUTE TO DENY THE CLAIM 4) WROTE 3 LETTERS (1 PER MONTH) TO NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS UNTIL THEY CONTACTED ME AGAIN TODAY 1/13/2016 ONLY TO DENY THE CLAIM ONCE AGAIN. I'VE OWNED ONLY NISSAN TRUCKS SINCE 1984 AND BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH THEIR PRODUCTS AND QUALITY. I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK NEW IN 2008 AND ONLY HAD 53,610 MILES WHEN THIS ISSUE CAME UP. I'M THANKFUL I HEARD THE NOISE AND HAD IT FIXED BEFORE THE CHAIN(S) SEIZED AND CAUSED MAJOR ENGINE DAMAGE OR EVEN A WRECK. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT I HAD AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM (BAD LUCK) IF IT HADN'T BEEN DOCUMENTED VIA THE SERVICE BULLETIN. NISSAN ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE VIA THE SERVICE BULLETIN THAT COVERED AT LEAST 3 MODELS OVER A 5 YEAR TIME SPAN. THEY NOW REFUSE TO ACCEPT ANY TYPE OF RESPONSIBILITY. A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH REVEALS SEVERAL CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS CONCERNING THE TIMING CHAIN ISSUE. I'M VERY UNHAPPY WITH NISSAN'S LACK OF PRODUCT SUPPORT ON WHAT WAS WAS CLEARLY A QUALITY ASSURANCE PROBLEM. I WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BUY (NOR RECOMMEND) A NISSAN PRODUCT ANYTIME IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE.

NISSAN HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THAT A MANUFACTURER DEFECT IN 2005-10 FRONTIER, PATHFINDER, AND XTERRA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS HAVE AN INTERNAL CRACK ON THE OIL COOLER TUBE MAY OCCUR LEADING TO INTERNAL LEAKAGE OF ENGINE COOLANT. THIS DEFECT HAS DESTROYED MY TRANSMISSION AND MANY OTHER CONSUMERS' TRANSMISSIONS, AS EVIDENCED BY THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS WHICH HAVE BEEN FILED AGAINST NISSAN. NISSAN OFFERED CUSTOMERS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THE RADIATORS FOR VEHICLES WITH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES, BUT NEVER ADDRESSED THE TRANSMISSION ISSUES, WHICH RANGE FROM $4000-6000 TO REBUILD. I REALIZED I HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN ON HWY 98 IN FLORIDA, WHERE ONCOMING TRAFFIC IS TRAVELING AT SPEEDS OF GREATER THAN 60 MILES AN HOUR. THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED WHILE I WAS MAKING THE TURN AND WAS NEARLY T-BONED BY TWO ONCOMING VEHICLES. IT IS INCONCEIVABLE THAT NISSAN HAS NOT RECALLED THESE VEHICLES. NISSAN IS PUTTING CONSUMERS LIVES IN DANGER AND COSTING HARD-WORKING AMERICANS SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNTS OF MONEY BY NOT RECALLING THESE VEHICLES.

UPON PENNSYLVANIA STATE REQUIRED INSPECTION THE INSPECTOR RECOGNIZED THAT THE REAR SEALS OF THE AXLE WERE "LEAKING" FLUID AND THAT THE FLUID HAD SATURATED THE ENTIRE BRAKING ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE CALIPER, PADS, ROTOR AND EMERGENCY BRAKE SHOES CAUSING THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE TO BE A HAZARD TO THE OPERATOR. WHEN ASKED WHEN THIS OCCURRED THE INSPECTOR SAID THAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN THIS WAY FOR SOME TIME BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF AXLE GREASE COVERING THE BRAKING MECHANISMS. FOR A DRIVER OF SAID VEHICLE THERE WOULD BE ZERO INDICATIONS OF FAILURE OF THE SEALS DUE TO HIGH TEMPERATURE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES CAUSING THE OIL TO GEL AND/OR BURN AWAY WHICH WOULD LEAVE NO VISIBLE SIGNS OF LEAKAGE ON THE GROUND. I FEEL THAT THIS CAUSES AN IMMEDIATE DANGER TO THE DRIVER AND THEIR OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE. THE OVER ALL POOR DESIGN OF THE AXLE SHAFTS BY NISSAN ENGINEERING HAS ALLOWED THIS SITUATION TO OCCUR. A TSB CURRENTLY EXISTS FOR THIS ISSUE AND NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. *TR

HEARD A HIGH PITCHED WHINING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE OF MY NISSAN 2008 CREW CAB 4 WHEEL DRIVE FRONTIER. MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE ISSUE EVALUATED AT THE SAME NISSAN DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE (NISSAN OF ATLANTIC CITY - FORMERLY ADMIRAL NISSAN). I PURCHASED THE USED FRONTIER IN JUNE 2011; APPROXIMATE MILEAGE WAS 40 - 41K. I ALSO PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AT THAT TIME - 48 MONTHS, 48 THOUSAND MILES (EXPIRATION 6/15/15). AFTER EVALUATING THE PROBLEM, A NISSAN SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE TIMING CHAIN AND ITS COMPONENTS - COST OF REPAIR $1900.00 - 2000.00 PLUS 7% SALES TAX. I ASKED HIM IF THE REPAIR WAS COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY I PURCHASED. HE SAID NO! HE INFORMED ME THAT MY EXTENDED WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED FOR MILEAGE; I WAS OVER BY A FEW HUNDRED MILES. THIS IS AN EXISTING PROBLEM. NISSAN HAD KNOW OF, AND BEEN DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE WELL BEFORE I PURCHASED MY 2008 FRONTIER IN JUNE 2011. HOWEVER, THIS INFORMATION WAS NEVER MADE AVAILABLE DIRECTLY TO THE CONSUMER. WHEN THE ENGINE WHINE FIRST BEGAN IT WAS LOW - BARELY NOTICEABLE, BUT THE MORE I DROVE THE WORSE IT GOT. IF I HAD BEEN AWARE OF THE SERVICE BULLETINS SENT TO THE DEALERS ABOUT THIS ISSUE, I WOULD HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE CHECKED OUT BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED; THE EXTENDED WARRANTY HAD A $50.00 DEDUCTIBLE. MY FINAL COST FOR THE REPAIR ON 3/28/15 WAS $1974.16. NISSAN OF AMERICA IS AT FAULT AND SO IS THE DEALERSHIP - NISSAN OF ATLANTIC CITY. THEY ARE BOTH RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE THEY BOTH HAD THE INFORMATION ABOUT EXISTING TIMING CHAIN PROBLEMS AND FAILED TO DISCLOSE IT. *TR

THE SPARE TIRE ON THE VEHICLE IS HELD IN PLACE BY A CHAIN UNDER THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. ITS HOISTED INTO PLACE FROM THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN CHECKING THE AIR PRESSURE IN THE SPARE TIRE, I FOUND THE SPARE TIRE RIM BADLY RUSTED. I'M AFRAID THAT THE RIM'S HOLES WILL ULTIMATELY BECOME SO LARGE SO AS NOT TO HOLD THE LUG NUTS. IF THE SPARE WITH RUSTED LUG NUT HOLES THAT WERE TOO LARGE, WAS INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE, THE SPARE COULD POSSIBLY COME OFF WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. FURTHERMORE, THE ANCHOR POINT ON THE SPARE TIRE HOIST IS ALSO RUSTING BADLY. IT MAY FAIL TO SUPPORT THE SPARE TIRE WHICH COULD THEN DROP FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. IF THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING WHEN IT FELL, IT COULD BOUNCE AND STRIKE THE GAS TANK, POSSIBLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. *JS

THEY INSISTED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED AND SAID THAT IT IS NOW COVERED UNDER PARTS WARRANTY. OVER THE NEXT 15,000 TO 20,000 MILES THE FIXED IT TWO MORE TIMES AS A SEAT BELT RETRACTOR, HOWEVER THE LAST TIME THE LIGHT BEGAN TO BLINK I TOOK THE VEHICLE AND THEY GAVE ME A NEW CAUSE OF THE LIGHT. I WAS THEN TOLD IT WAS THE PASSENGER SEAT AIR BAG SENSOR AND THAT IT WAS FAULTY AND THAT IT WOULD COST ME 1200 DOLLARS TO FIX. I KNOW THAT NISSAN HAS RECENT PROBLEMS WITH AIR BAGS AND IN THE PAST THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE EAST COAST CONCERNING FRONTIER AIRBAGS. I WOULD GUESS THAT NISSAN CORP. I JUST HAD TO HAVE THE RADIATOR REPLACED AND THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REBUILT AT A COST OF ALMOST $3,000 IN MY 2008 NISSAN FRONTIER SE 4V 2.5 WITH ONLY 84,000 MILES BECAUSE OF THE CROSS CONTAMINATION. ACCORDING TO CARCOMPLAINT.COM, THE AVERAGE OWNER IS BECOMING AWARE OF A PROBLEM AT 94,565 MILES. IF NISSAN WOULD HAVE RECALLED THE RADIATORS IMMEDIATELY UPON KNOWLEDGE OF THE DEFECT, IT WOULD HAVE SAVED THEM FROM DEALING WITH NUMEROUS TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENTS AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION CONCERNS. I BROUGHT MY TRUCK TO THE NISSAN DEALER AND I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT CAUSED BY CONTAMINATION AND I SHOULD GET HELP FROM NISSAN WHO LATER ON DENIED HELP FOR ME. THE NEXT DAY I BROUGHT MY NISSAN FRONTIER TO A SHOP EXPERT IN TRANSMISSIONS AND THEIR DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE FAILURE IN MY TRANSMISSION WAS CAUSED BY AN "ANTI-FREEZE CONTAMINATION, CODE 1751". NISSAN KNEW THAT THEY HAD A FAULTY RADIATOR AND INSTEAD OF RECALLING THE RADIATOR, THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY KNOWING THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE CARS WOULD SURPASS 80,000 MILES BEFORE THEY STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. NOW LOOKING AT HIGH COST TO FIX THE TIMING CHAIN COVER SEAL. NISSAN KNOWS ABOUT BOTH OF THESE ISSUES AND IS NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY AND WON'T HELP. *TR

I WENT TO WHERE I BOUGHT THEM, AND NOKIAN OFFERED NO APOLOGY AND A $200 DISCOUNT ON A NEW SET OF $800 TIRES. THEY SOLD DEFECTIVE TIRES, AND YET THEY EXPECT ME TO SHELL OUT HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION. THAT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE. I DIDN'T SPEND ALMOST $1K ON TIRES TO HAVE TO SPEND ANOTHER $700 IN UNDER 30K MILES. IT'S NOT MY FAULT THEY CHOSE TO SELL DEFECTIVE TIRES, AND REPLACING THEIR DEFECTIVE TIRES SHOULD NOT BE AT MY EXPENSE. P.S. THE TIRE MODEL IS A WRG2. YOUR FORM REQUIRED I CHECK A MODEL, BUT THE CORRECT MODEL WASN'T ON THE LIST, SO I HAD TO CHECK THE WRONG MODEL OR THE FORM WOULDN'T LET ME CONTINUE. I HAVE THE WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM WITH THE RADIATOR COOLANT ENTERING AND DAMAGING THE TRANSMISSION. I AM HAVING IT REPAIRED A NISSAN DEALERSHIP. I WILL HAVE TO PAY OVER 3200.00!. THERE WAS A SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT THAT IS RIDICULOUS!. THE PROBLEM DOES NOT EVEN OCCUR UNTIL OVER 80000 MILES WHEN NISSAN WILL NOT COVER ANYTHING. THERE ARE HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS. *TR

NOTICED OIL / GREASE ON REAR TIRES SIDEWALL. TAKEN TO NISSAN DEALER FOR INSPECTION. MECHANIC FOUND A FAILURE OF BOTH REAR AXLE SEALS CAUSING FLUID TO COVER REAR AXLE, DIFFERENTIAL, REAR BRAKES, AND TIRES. I WAS ADVISED TO NOT DRIVE THE TRUCK DUE TO POSSIBLE AXLE AND WHEEL SEPARATION FROM THE REAR END. IF I HAD NOT FOUND THIS I COULD EASILY BE DEAD DUE TO WHEEL AXLE SEPARATION FROM THE VEHICLE IN MOTION. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND THE VEHICLE RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM. AFTER REPAIR WAS PERFORMED THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THE REAR AXLE HOUSING VENT TUBE CLOGGED CAUSING PRESSURE TO BUILD UP BLOWING OUT THE REAR SEALS. NISSAN CORP. USA WAS NOTIFIED BUT DECLINED TO ASSIST CUSTOMER WITH EXTENSIVE REPAIRS STATING THAT ALTHOUGH BEING UNDER THE 60,000 MILE POWER TRAIN LIMIT THE VEHICLE WAS 5 MONTHS OVER THE 5 YEAR AGE LIMIT. NISSAN CORP. USA DID NOT VIEW THIS AS A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEARD A WHINING NOISE THAT I HAD NEVER HEARD IN MY 2008 NISSAN FRONTIER 4.0 TRUCK. THE NOISE IS NEW AND OVER THE LAST WEEK OR SO, IT COMES AND GOES. VEHICLE WENT OUT OF WARRANTY 2.5 MONTHS AGO AT 5 YRS 2.5 MONTHS OLD. 54500 MILES ON THE TRUCK. THE WHINE PITCH INCREASES WITH ENGINE SPEED. IN NEUTRAL AS YOU REV THE ENGINE YOU HEAR THE WHINE NOISE GO UP AND DOWN WITH THE RPMS. VERY DISAPPOINTING TO THINK I AM STUCK WITH A LARGE $1500 TIMING BELT ISSUE WITH WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A WELL DESIGNED VEHICLE FROM A COMPANY I THOUGHT I COULD TRUST HIGH QUALITY. *TR

IT WENT OVER THE 60,000 MILE WARRANTY. THE DEALER SAID THEY WOULD STILL LOOK AT THE PROBLEM AND SUGGESTED THAT IT MAY NEED A THROTTLE ADJUSTMENT. AFTER SPEAKING WITH THE MECHANIC HE SAID THE THROTTLE WAS WITHIN RANGE AND IT WAS REPORTED TO HIM THAT ALL FRONTIERS AND PATHFINDERS HAVE THAT PROBLEM. A WHINING OR BUZZING TYPE NOISE HAS DEVELOP FROM THE TIMING CHAIN AREA CAUSED BY EXCESS SLACK IN THE SECONDARY TIMING CHAINS. NISSAN HAS ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN (NTB09-128) REGARDING THIS ISSUE. REPLACEMENT OF BOTH SECONDARY TIMING CHAINS AND THEIR TENSIONER SHOES WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPAIR THIS CONCERN. MY 2008 FRONTIER HAS 89K MILES ON IT (OUT OF NISSAN'S 60K WARRANTY) AND HAS BEEN WHINING FOR SOMETIME NOW. NISSAN KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM PER THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED TSP. IT IS MY WORRY THAT IF THE CHAIN BREAKS OR FAILS WHILE DRIVING IT THE MOTOR WILL INSTANTLY STOP/FAIL AND POSSIBLY LOCK UP THEREFORE PUTTING MYSELF AND FAMILY AND OR OTHERS AT GREAT RISK FOR INJURY. *TR

STARTED TO NOTICE HEAT NOT WORKING AT AN IDLE BUT WHEN ACCELERATED HEAT WAS WORKING FINE. I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING ABOUT IT SEEING AS IT WAS COLD OUTSIDE. THEN I RECEIVED A NOTICE FOR A SUIT AGAINST NISSAN FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS CAUSED BY TRANSMISSION COOLING LINE LEAKING CAUSING COOLANT AND TRANSMISSION FLUID TO MIX AND TRANSMISSION FAILING. I NOW HAVE 102,000 MILES ON MY FRONTIER AND THE SETTLEMENT NISSAN OFFERS WILL NOT COVER ME EVEN THOUGH VEHICLE IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THE HEAT ISSUE IS CAUSED BY THE LEAK AS WELL. NISSAN SHOULD HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE NOT A SETTLEMENT WHICH ONLY COVERS PEOPLE WHO NEVER DRIVE THEIR VEHICLE. 8 YEAR 80,000 MILE EXTENSION IS A JOKE. NOW I WILL HAVE TO COME OUT OF POCKET TO REPAIR MY ONLY VEHICLE THAT I HAVE BEFORE FURTHER DAMAGE IS DONE TO THE TRANSMISSION. IT STUTTERS AT THE MOMENT HOPEFULLY IT WONT COMPLETELY FAIL BEFORE I CAN AFFORD TO REPAIR IT. *TR

Summary

I RECEIVED A LETTER FOR A SETTLEMENT OFFER FROM NISSAN ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION COOLER FAILURE WHICH LEADS TO TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE. I STARTED TO RESEARCH WHAT WAS WRONG AND WHAT I CAN DO ABOUT IT SEEING AS MY FRONTIER HAS 102,000 MILES ON IT AND IS NOT COVERED BY THE SETTLEMENT OFFER. AS I DID SOME RESEARCH I FOUND OUT ABOUT A SYMPTOM BEFORE TRANSMISSION FAILURE OCCURS WHICH IS AT AN IDLE YOU HAVE A LOSS OF HEAT UNTIL YOU REV THE ENGINE OR START TO ACCELERATE AND HEAT RETURNS. I NOTICED THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED AROUND NOVEMBER 2012 WHILE I HAD LEFT MY TRUCK RUNNING WHILE PARKED FOR A FEW MINUTES WHICH I NORMALLY DO NOT DO. I STARTED TO DRIVE AND THE HEAT WAS WORKING AGAIN SO I THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A THERMOSTAT STICKING AND WATCHED MY VEHICLE FOR THE SIGNS OF THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN. I DID NOT NOTICE ANYTHING HAPPEN AGAIN BECAUSE I DO NOT LET MY TRUCK SIT IDLE LONG ENOUGH UNTIL I TESTED IT TODAY AND WHEN I LET IT SIT IDLE FOR A MINUTE THE HEAT STOPPED WORKING PROPERLY AND RETURNED TO NORMAL FUNCTION WHEN I STARTED DRIVING IT. I AM TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM BEFORE IT GETS WORSE BUT I DO NOT KNOW IF I WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD IT. SO AS FOR THE TIME BEING I WILL HAVE TO DRIVE MY ONLY VEHICLE TO WORK AND HOPE THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT FAIL COMPLETELY AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR WORSE. HOPEFULLY I CAN FIND A AFFORDABLE REPAIR OR NISSAN WILL BE FORCED TO REPAIR IT BEFORE SOMEONE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS HAS THIS HAPPEN AND US CONSUMERS SUFFER BODILY INJURY OR FATALITIES BEFORE THEY WILL DO THE HONORABLE THING AND ADMIT THEIR VEHICLE HAS FAULTY MATERIALS USED IN ITS CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIR THEM. ONLY THEY WILL SUFFER IN THE END IF THEY DO NOTHING. *TR

LEFT WORK ABOUT 4 DAYS AGO AT NIGHT WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE TRUCK CUT OUT ON ME(NO GAS PEDAL) SO I LOOK DOWN AT THE VOLTAGE GAUGE AND ITS READING ABOUT 10V..... SO I THOUGHT TO MYSELF "OK WELL MAYBE THE ALTERNATOR FINALLY WENT AFTER ALL THE [XXX]I PUT IT THROUGH." WENT TO PULL OVER AND HERE IS WHERE IT GETS WEIRD, I WENT TO HIT THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, I COASTED TO THE SLOW LANE AND TURNED MY ACC. OFF AND GOT IT BACK HOME SAFELY. LONG STORY SHORT I TESTED THE ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY, BOTH OF WHICH WERE SHORTED/OLD/DEAD.... REPLACED BOTH AT THE TUNE OF $191 FOR THE ALTERNATOR AND $70 FOR THE BATTERY. NOW, I HOOKED EVERYTHING UP TODAY. STARTED THE TRUCK... VOLT GAUGE IS BACK AT 10V... THEN I SEE A SMALL AMOUNT OF SMOKE FROM UNDER THE HOOD, SHUT THE TRUCK OFF TO FIND THAT THE BRAKE LINES GOING FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE ABS MODULE ARE SMOKING... AND THE LINES LEAVING THE MODULE ARE AS WELL. I COOLED EVERYTHING DOWN, WENT INSIDE TO GRAB A DRINK (4-5 MIN) AND CAME BACK OUT AND THE TRUCK WAS COMPLETELY DEAD... UNHOOKED THE BATTERY AND PUT IT ON A TRICKLE CHARGER FOR NOW. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

LEFT REAR AXLE SEAL FAILED AND GREASE FROM AXLE COATED CALIPER AND BRAKE DISC, RENDERING BRAKING INEFFECTIVE ON THAT WHEEL. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH NISSAN WITH A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (NTB100008) ISSUED, BUT NISSAN ONLY SELECTIVELY APPLIES THE REPAIR. GREASE COATING THE BRAKE APPEARS VISUALLY THE SAME AS BRAKE DUST, AND OWNER'S MANUAL REQUIRES INSPECTION OF SEALS ONLY EVERY 7500 MILES, SO BRAKING MAY BE LOST FOR A CONSIDERABLE PERIOD OF TIME BEFORE DISCOVERY. SERIOUS ACCIDENT WAS NARROWLY AVOIDED ON 10-14-2011, IRONICALLY ON RETURN FROM DEALER, WHEN CAR AHEAD STOPPED IN LANE TO TURN LEFT; HARD BRAKING AND SWERVE INTO RIGHT LANE AVOIDED COLLISION BUT TRUCK STOPPED WITH FRONT GRILL AT SAME POINT AS FRONT SEAT IN THE STOPPED CAR. *TR

Summary

6- DAYS AFTER BUYING A BRAND NEW 2008 NISSAN FRONTIER 2WD/SE CREW CAB THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT STAY ON .ON THE DAY I WENT TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER THE TRUCK WOULD NOT START, I HAD IT TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY WORKED ON IT FOR A WEEK.THEY STATED THAT SOMETIMES IT WOULD START AND OTHER TIMES IT WOULDN'T ,THEY SAID THEY HAD TO CALL THE NISSAN TECH LINE THAT INSTRUCTED THEM TO CHECK SEVERAL DIFFERENT THINGS BUT IT STILL WOULD NOT START SO THE TECH LINE TOLD THEM TO REPLACE THE -"IPDM E/R".THEY SAID THE TRUCK WAS THEN FIXED AND TO PICK IT UP. I PICKED UP THE TRUCK AND WENT APPROXIMATELY 2-MILES TO A STORE AND WHEN I CAME BACK OUT THE TRUCK WOULD NOT START AGAIN,I HAD IT TOWED BACK TO THE NISSAN DEALER AGAIN.THIS TIME THEY WORKED ON IT FOR 6-DAYS AND THEY SAID --"CHECKED WIRING GOING INTO IPDM BOX,FOUND WHEN WIGGLING WIRES THEY COULD HERE A CLICK AND THEN THE VEHICLE WOULD CRANK ,THEY UNPLUGGED WIRING AND TRACED WIRE BACK INTO MAIN ENGINE HARNESS,FOUND WIRE WAS SPLICED TO ITSELF AND HAD A LOOSE CONNECTION,REPAIRED WIRING AND CONFIRMED OPERATION,PROGRAMMED ALL KEYS TOGETHER, CLEARED ALL CODES,CLEARED SELF LEARNING CONTROL,RELEARNED IDLE AIR VOLUME AND RECALIBRATED STEERING ANGLE SENSOR".THEY HAD ME PICK UP THE TRUCK AGAIN ON 9/10/08 AND SO FAR IT IS OK. *TR

Summary

MY 2008 NISSAN FRONTIER 4X4 CREWCAB IS THROWN ALL OVER THE ROAD BY NORMAL WIND DRAFT WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND ON WINDY DAYS IT IS A NIGHTMARE TO KEEP ON THE ROAD. YOU CANNOT RELAX WHILE DRIVING OR YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD BEFORE YOU KNOW IT! I AM AFRAID I AM GOING END UP IN A WRECK BECAUSE OF IT OR AT THE VERY LEAST I BELIEVE I MIGHT BE STOP AND ACCUSED OF DRIVING DRUNK. I HAVE TAKEN IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND HAD IT CHECKED. NOTHING MECHANICALLY WRONG. THEY TELL ME IT IS WIND DRAFT. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK AS I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT NOW AND I DON'T THINK NISSAN IS GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, EVEN THOUGH THE LOOK ON THE SHOP FORMAN'S FACE TOLD ME HE KNOWS IT IS A DESIGN FLAW THAT HE CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT AND THAT HE IS UNCOMFORTABLE BEING CAUGHT IN THIS POSITION. THIS IS AN UNSAFE VEHICLE TO OPERATE AND THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL TO DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO FIX THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. IN MY OPINION, IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THIS IS REALITY!!!!!!!! *TR
