Wife was driving her jeep when she started to veer to the left. went to turn to steering to get straight when it wasn't responding a lot of slack in the steering. called a tow truck when the tow truck lifted noticed the cradle/sub frame was broken. she was on a country road when it happened. If this was on a highway or interstate there would have been major collision resulting in death. there was no warning when it broke it just broke. after doing some research into why it would break the air conditioning hose to the water to drain was running on the sub frame which rusted and eventually break, the break shifted the engine about a foot and dropped about 10 inches Since she didn't hit anything or no property damage there was no police involved. I have reached out to chrysler with the issue with no response. My family was in danger due to a poor design that could of been avoided and what I read she wasn't the only one.

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that an abnormal squeaking noise would emit from the brakes as the 4-wheel drive and tire pressure warning lights appeared on the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who discovered severe corrosion was on the entire subframe, but mostly on the front end of the vehicle. The mechanic replaced the rear passenger’s side rotor; he also informed her that the vehicle was unsafe to drive due to the corrosion. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 129,000.

The contact's son owns a 2011 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while his son was exiting the parking lot and driving approximately 15-25 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently stalled and the steering wheel locked-up. The contact did not know whether there were warning lights illuminated. The contact's son was able to veer to the side of the road. The contact stated his son was able to restart the vehicle and drove to his destination. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while driving. The contact's son was able to restart the vehicle and drove to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed that the roll over bent valve in the fuel tank was not closing properly leaking fuel into the EVAP system causing the vehicle to stall and lock the steering wheel. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. A case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.

The crossmember- engine cradle that hold the engine in place. I heard a noise and took it to my mechanic he took pictures of the crossmember showing that it is rusted through showing holes. Took it in to a jeep dealer to have it diganosed, they confirmed that it is unsafe to drive as the engine can actually fall out. I contacted chrysler and they said that there was an extension of the warranty on this part that expired a month ago. They sent me to Mopar parts to see if they would pay for the repair. After days they rejected the claim. Now this car is 10 years old however it only has 48000 miles which is less than 5000 miles a year. I bought the car bran new. So it all rusted through on a car with only the 48000 miles. At best this should have been a recall. But at least customers owning this car should have been notified about this warranty extension so they could have had it checked and reparied before some one is killed driving a car that the engine could fall out on the road. Now Mopar is refusing to cover the cost of fixing it because the warranty extension expired a month and a half ago . Even though they know there is a problem with it. I feel that I need some help in making Mopar or Chrysler pay to have this work completed. I also have had to replace the 4 wheel drive as that went bad along with replacing the rear axles as they also rusted.

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while driving 20 mph, the vehicle went into limp mode and would not exceed 25 mph. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the brake switch, camshaft sensor, catalytic converter, and the crankshaft sensor needing to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure persisted. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer a month later where it was diagnosed with the throttle body and the brake switch needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. I ALREADY PUT A LOT OF MONEY INTO THE JEEP FROM A NEW TRANSMISSION, WIRING CONCERNS LOCATED UNDER DRIVERS FRONT TIRE, TIMING BELT AND GENERAL MAINTAINANCE.

I BROUGHT IN MY 2011 JEEP COMPASS FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND A SIMPLE REPAIR. MY MECHANIC CALLED WITH WHAT I BELIEVED WAS THE CALL THAT MY VEHICLE WAS READY TO BE PICKED UP. TO MY SURPRISE, HE STATED THAT THERE WAS A MAJOR ISSUE. HE STATED THAT THE FRAME WAS COMPLETELY ROTTED AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE, EVEN THE MILE BACK TO MY HOUSE. AFTER SPEAKING WITH THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, THEY ADVISED ME TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE THERE (APPROX. 1/2 MILE AWAY) AND LEAVE FOR REPAIR. THEY EXPLAINED THAT THE FRAME WAS PLACED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY DUE TO THE ISSUE AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO PAY APPROX. $500-$1,000.00 FOR 'OTHER PARTS' AND AN ALIGNMENT WHEN REPLACING THE FRAME THAT WERE NOT PART OF THE WARRANTY. QUITE FRANKLY THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. IT SHOULD COST ME NO OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE FOR A FAILED PART, ESPECIALLY A FRAME ON A LESS THAN 10 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. I AM INCREDIBLY THANKFUL THAT I BROUGHT IT IN PRIOR TO GIVING IT TO MY 17 YEAR OLD. VERY DANGEROUS! JEEP SHOULD COVER THE WHOLE COST! IN ADDITION, I WAS TOLD THE PART ISN'T AVAILABLE FOR AT LEAST 4-6 WEEKS!

I HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE TO THER MECHANIC TWICE AND HAD THE COMPUTER RUN DIAGNOSTICS. THE CAUSE OF THESE PROBLEMS IS THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. WHILE IN MOTION AGAIN, CHECK ENGINE, TRANSMISSION TEMP AND TRACTION CONTROL ILLUMINATED, AND I LOST ALL POWER. BACK TO SHOP, CONTINUE TO HAVE COMMUNICATION ERROR. ALL OTHER DIAGNOSTICS ARE FINE. MECHANIC NOTED THIS IS COMMON AMONG THIS MAKE/MODEL. I PERFORMED RESEARCH AND NOTED MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS REGARDING TIPM MODULE. I FOUND THAT CHRYSLER HAD RECALLED SAME PART ON DURANGO AND GRAND CHEROKEE, BUT NOT OTHER MODELS. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND UNSAFE. IN MY 2011 JEEP COMPASS THAT I PURCHASED FROM DAVE SYVERSON' S IN ALBERT LEA MINNESOTA IN 2015 HAS HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION STARTING IN LESS THAN A YEAR FROM THE PURCHASE DATE. THE FIRST TIME WAS WHEN I WAS COMING HOME, UP MY GRADUAL HILL, WHEN MY CAR STOPPED BEING ABLE TO DRIVE MORE THAN 10 MPH AND ALL OF MY GEARS WERE OUT UP (P, N, D, R). IT WAS "FIXED" BECAUSE MY WIRING TO MY TRANSMISSION WAS COMPLETELY CORRODED. NOT ONCE DID THE LEAPING OF MY CAR STOP, THE FEELING OF THE CAR PUSHING THROUGH GEARS ON IT'S IN WHILE IN MOTION. IN THE WINTER MONTHS I TOOK MY CAR IN TO HAVE THE LEAPING LOOKED AT, THE SHOP SAID THERE WAS NOTHING TO FIX. HOWEVER THIS JUNE I WAS DRIVING NORTH ON HIGHWAY 35 WHEN AN OIL TEMPERATURE GAUGE CAME ON. I STOPPED, HAD IT TOWED, THE SHOP I HAD TO GO TO CHECKED TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER (AFTER I CALLED FIVE TIMES TO TELL THEM TO CHECK THESE THINGS) THEY SAID IT NEEDED REPLACED. I DROVE MY CAR TO THE JEEP DEALER AND IT WAS REPLACED AFTER TWO WEEKS OF NOT HAVING A CAR. MY CAR WAS GIVEN A PRETTY CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH. AFTER PARKING, I INSPECTED UNDER THE CAR TO FIND A METAL PIPE HANGING DOWN TO THE GROUND NEAR THE FRONT LEFT TIRE. I EASILY PULLED THE PIPE OUT, AND DISCOVERED IT IS THE CVT TRANSMISSION FILL TUBE. IT APPEARS THE TUBE ROTTED OFF FROM WHEREVER IT BELONGS. I HAVE FOUND MULTIPLE REPORTS OF THE SAME THING HAPPENING TO OTHER JEEP MODELS AS WELL, PARTICULARLY THE PATRIOT. WHILE I HAVE YET TO DETERMINE ANY DETRIMENTAL PERFORMANCE EFFECTS (IT JUST HAPPENED TODAY, AND I HAVE YET TO DRIVE IT AGAIN), THE TUBE COULD HAVE EASILY DISLODGED WHILE DRIVING AND STRUCK A CAR BEHIND ME, ENDANGERING THE LIVES OF OTHERS. MARKED BY AN AUDIBLE WHINE AND THE ILLUMINATION OF THE TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT LIGHT, THE CVT ON THE 2.4L 4-CYLINDER ENGINE IN THE 2011 JEEP COMPASS EXPERIENCES SIGNIFICANT AND DRAMATIC POWER LOSS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY PREVALENT AT SUSTAINED HIGHWAY SPEEDS CREATING A POTENTIALLY UNSAFE SITUATION. IF THE TRANSMISSION OVERHEATS TOO MUCH, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT MOVE UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION COOLS DOWN. THIS ISSUE FIRST HAPPENED ON MY 2011 JEEP COMPASS IN JULY 2014 AND WAS TEMPORARILY RECTIFIED BY JEEP. THEIR SOLUTION WAS TO REPLACE THE CVT TRANSMISSION FLUID. HOWEVER, THIS PROBLEM HAS RETURNED THIS SUMMER UNDER HIGHWAY USE, ESPECIALLY ON HOT DAYS. ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, MY FAMILY AND I EXPERIENCED NOT ONLY THE WHINE FROM THE CVT, BUT SIGNIFICANT POWER LOSS ON THE HIGHWAY. TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AT A CONSTANT SPEED 65-70 MPH THE POWER TRAIN WAS MAKING A WHINING NOISE. THIS WAS ACCOMPANIED WITH ROUGH ENGINE IDLE AND LACK OF POWER FOR ACCELERATING. TURNING THE ENGINE OFF FOR A MINUTE AND RESTARTING SEEMS TO CLEAR THESE WARNING LIGHTS AND VEHICLE OPERATES NORMALLY. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO NEAREST CHRYSLER SERVICE CENTER WITH DIAGNOSTICS COMPLETED AND THE MASS FLOW SENSOR REPLACED. ISSUE OCCURRED AGAIN THE FOLLOWING WEEK. I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE SAME CHRYSLER SERVICE CENTER WITHOUT SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE SO THAT THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN COULD READ THE ERROR CODES AND OBSERVE/DOCUMENT THE WARNING LIGHTS LIT IN THE DASH. A THIRD VISIT TO THE SAME SERVICE CENTER RESULTED IN THE REPLACEMENT OF THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY. ISSUE OCCURRED AGAIN WITHIN TWO WEEKS AFTER THE MOST RECENT SERVICE VISIT. I HAD MENTIONED TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR THAT I HAD ONE INCIDENT PRIOR TO THE INITIAL EVENT FOR THIS ISSUE OF BRAKING HARD WHICH MOST LIKELY ENGAGED THE ABS-ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. THE SERVICE ADVISOR DID NOT SEEM TO BELIEVE THERE MIGHT BE A CONNECTION BETWEEN THIS INCIDENT AND THIS ISSUE. WHILE STUCK IN TRAFFIC FOR 6 MINUTES (WINDOWS DOWN), THE CAR TEMPERATURE GAUGE WENT TO "H". ONCE I STARTED MOVING, THE GUAGE WENT TO HALF. WHEN I GOT HOME I CHECKED THE FLUID LEVELS AND THEY WERE FINE. ON THE WAY TO WORK THE NEXT DAY WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE CAR TEMP GUAGE WENT TO "H" AGAIN. I BROUGHT IT IN TO MY MECHANIC WHO SAID THAT THE FAN MOTOR WAS NOT SPINNING, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION HE NOTED THAT THE COMPUTER MODULE THAT OPERATES THE FAN WAS "FRIED" AND THE TRANSMISSION DIPSTICK SOMEHOW GOT LODGED IN THE FAN MOTOR. I REPLACED THE DIPSTICK AND COMPUTER MODULE ($1100) AND THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING AGAIN. OVERHEATING FOR NO REASON. WHEN I CALLED CHRYSLER/JEEP ABOUT MY EXTENDED WARRANTY, THEY SAID THAT ONLY THE ENGINE WAS COVERED, NOT THE COMPUTER MODULE THAT COULD SEIZE MY ENGINE. ACCORDING TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP, 70 COMPUTER MODULES WERE REPLACED IN A WEEK! WHEN DOES THIS BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD? IF I WAS DRIVING ON THE PARKWAY AND MY ENGINE SEIZED, I WOULD OF BEEN DEAD! *JS

THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP 1/31/13 AND THE DEALERSHIP COULDN'T FIND A PROBLEM. RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO OWNER. THE VEHICLE CONTINUOUSLY HAD THIS PROBLEM, HOWEVER, IT WAS RANDOM AND COULD NOT BE RE-CREATED BY THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP 4/5/13. A TEST DRIVE WAS PERFORMED WITH THE OWNER FOR 106 MILES, BUT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE RECREATED. THE VEHICLE KEPT RANDOMLY FAILING TO ACCELERATE. FINALLY, ON 4/11/13, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ACCELERATING PROPERLY AND THE DEALERSHIP WAS ABLE TO WITNESS THE PROBLEM. DEALERSHIP REPLACED FUEL PUMP. SO FAR THE ISSUE HAS NOT RE-OCCURRED, HOWEVER, THIS REPORT IS BEING FILED IN ORDER TO NOTIFY THE SAFETY BOARD OF POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE AND DANGER TO PUBLIC. IN PARTICULAR THOSE MODELS THAT DO NOT HAVE CHROME TIP EXTENSION ON THE END OF THE EXHAUST PIPE. WE PURCHASED OUR 2011 JEEP COMPASS IN DECEMBER OF 2011. APPROXIMATELY 3 MONTHS LATER MY WIFE EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE STALL IN THE MIDDLE OF MAKING A LEFT-HAND TURN GOING APPROX. 20 MPH. THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT OR INDICATION THAT THE ENGINE WAS NO LONGER RUNNING. THE POWER STEERING LOCKED UP AND BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE SINCE HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN INTO ON-COMING TRAFFIC. WITHIN A MONTH LATER IT HAPPENED TO ME AND AGAIN WHILE MAKING A SLOW LEFT-HANDED TURN. MY WIFE NOTIFIED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE PURCHASED THE JEEP AND THEY SAID TO BRING IT IN NEXT TIME IT HAPPENED. IT HAPPENED A 3RD TIME WITH MY WIFE IN JUNE 2012 -AGAIN WHILE MAKING A LEFT-HANDED TURN. WE THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM. THEY KEPT IT FOR A WEEK AND SAID THE COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS REPORTED NO ISSUES. THEY SAID UNTIL IT HAPPENED WITH THEM THEY COULDN'T ISOLATE THE PROBLEM. TODAY, JULY 18TH, 2012 IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN WITH MY WIFE FOR THE 4TH TIME MAKING A LEFT-HANDED TURN AGAIN. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD AND UPON RESEARCHING OTHER CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS, IT IS QUITE COMMON. IN FACT, I AM FINDING THAT 25-50% OF THE CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE 2011 JEEP COMPASS ARE RELATED TO THIS ENGINE STALL OUT WHILE DRIVING. WE HAVE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AS WE WERE INSTRUCTED AND I LEFT THEM COPIES OF THE RESEARCH I DID AND CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS SO THEY HAVE NO REASON TO SAY IT IS ISOLATED TO JUST MY VEHICLE BECAUSE THERE IS A DEFINITE TREND THAT WARRANTS A SAFETY RECALL IN MY OPINION. AT THIS TIME IT IS IN THE HANDS OF CHRYSLER TO BRING THIS TO A RESOLUTION. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS ABOUT 8000 MILES AND LOTS OF WARRANTY LEFT SO I AM HOPING TO SEE CHRYSLER STAND BEHIND THEIR REPUTATION AND DO THE RIGHT THING.

WHY WOULD THEY SELL A CAR THAT SHUTS OFF FOR NO REASON AND THEY KNOW ABOUT IT? I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN THANK GOD THEY WERE NOT IN THE CAR WITH ME. NOW WE ARE IN A RENTAL. THANKS JEEP. *KB

THE PROBLEM VEHICLE IS A 2011 FWD JEEP COMPASS. ON 5/31/11 WITHIN THE FIRST 10 (TEN) MILES OF OWNERSHIP THE VEHICLE STALLED OUT ON ME WHILE STROPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT WITHOUT ANY DIFFICULTY. ON 6/19/11 (WHILE IN MOTION), WITHOUT ANY ADVANCE INDICATION OF A PROBLEM THE VEHICLE TOTALLY LOST POWER. I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND WAS ABLE TO ROLL IT OUT OF TRAFFIC AND INTO A TURN LANE. THE VEHICLE STRUGGLED TO RESTART BUT DID AFTER A COUPLE OF TRIES, A "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON AND REMAINED ON FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES. (AMONG OTHER PROBLEMS), THIS 2011 JEEP COMPASS HAS TRANSMISSION DIFFICULTIES. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED TO SHIFT FROM GEAR TO GEAR WITHOUT MANUAL ASSISTANCE. IT WILL WHINE AND STRAIN AND JUST NOT CHANGE, EVEN AS THE RPM CLIMB SKY HIGH, IT WILL NOT SHIFT WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. THIS FAILURE WAS FIRST DOCUMENTED ON 6/19/11 BUT THERE WERE MULTIPLE FAILURE BEFORE THIS DATE. THE SYSTEM FAILURE HAS RESULTED IN A REDUCTION OF POWER TO SUCH EXTENT THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO SAFELY MERGE INTO A LANE OF TRAFFIC. DURING SUCH EPISODES THE ACCELERATOR COULD BE PRESSED TO THE FLOOR AND THE MAXIMUM SPEED WOULD NOT EXCEED 20 OR 25 MILES PER HOUR. THIS VEHICLE (WHICH HAS OTHER PROBLEMS) IS CONSIDERED TO BE UNSAFE. 2011 JEEP COMPASS, A RENTAL VEHICLE. THE FRONT RIGHT SEAT SAFETY BELT, WHILE APPEARING TO BE BUCKLED, WAS NOT SECURELY FASTENED. WHEN THE VEHICLE CAME TO A SUDDEN STOP, THE BELT UNBUCKLED ALLOWING THE PASSENGER TO MOVE FORWARD TOWARDS THE DASHBOARD. NO INJURIES RESULTED FROM THE INCIDENT. UPON INVESTIGATION IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE OUTER PLASTIC CASING OF THE BUCKLE RECEPTACLE WAS NOT IN THE CORRECT POSITION. THIS PIECE WAS MOVED BY HAND INTO THE CORRECT POSITION, AND THE BELT THEN APPARENTLY OPERATED APPROPRIATELY FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE RENTAL PERIOD. *KB

WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 5 TRAVELING AT 65 - 70 MPH THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION TYPE SOUND AND THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE OF OUR 5 WEEK OLD 2011 JEEP COMPASS SUDDENLY DROPPED. UPON COMING TO A SKIDDING STOP IN THE CENTER DIVIDE IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE WHEEL AND TIRE HAD BROKEN OFF OF THE VEHICLE LEAVING ONLY THE CENTER PART OF THE WHEEL BOLTED TO THE CAR. THE CAR CAME TO A STOP ON THE ROTOR. THE WHEEL'S FIVE SPOKES WERE COMPLETELY SNAPPED AND THE TIRE STILL ATTACHED WITH SEVERAL BURN HOLES ON THE SIDE WALLS BUT NO TREAD DAMAGE. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO ANY OTHER PARTS OF THE CAR EXCEPT FOR TIRE MARKINGS ON THE SIDE AS IT DETACHED FROM THE JEEP COMPASS. THE WHEEL AND TIRE WERE FOUND APPROXIMATELY 60 YARDS DOWN THE FREEWAY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES BUT CHP SAID IT WAS A VERY FORTUNATE SITUATION AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN FAR WORSE. THE JEEP CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP CAN NOT EXPLAIN IT. THE INSURANCE COMPANY CAN NOT EXPLAIN IT BUT SAID IT WAS TOO COST PROHIBITED TO PAY FOR FORENSIC TESTING ON THE WHEEL SO WILL ONLY PAY FOR THE DAMAGE AND NOT THE "WHAT IFS". WE ARE BEING TOLD THAT IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET THE WHEEL TESTED FOR POSSIBLE STRESS FRACTURES. OUR COMPASS HAS BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR A MONTH AND CHRYSLER HAS STILL NOT SENT AN INVESTIGATOR TO LOOK AT IT DESPITE OUR MANY CALLS. DO NOT WANT TO HAVE JUST THE ONE WHEEL FIXED AND GET BACK IN THE CAR IF ALL THE WHEELS COULD BE DEFECTIVE. WE MIGHT NOT BE SO LUCKY NEXT TIME. *KB
