Summary

Defective water pump located inside the engine that when failure occurs can cause coolant to leak into engine causing complete engine failure. This is a major safety hazard due to the fact that these cars with defective water pumps can break down with very little warning in the middle of a freeway! I have contacted Mazda who refuses to do anything due to it being outside warranty but will not acknowledge the safety concern sudden engine failure can cause on a perfectly maintained car. In California there is currently a lawsuit against Mazda for this issue and hundreds of other Ford and Mazda owners who have been caught in very dangerous situations due to this water pump failure issue. The situation we were involved in could have gone very differently and that was my family in the vehicle that Mazda seems to care about a couple thousand dollars more then the value of life... is just ridiculous! Please do the research yourself so no one has to loose their life over this.

Summary

The contact owns a 2011 Mazda CX-9. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, upon approaching oncoming traffic, the vehicle unexpectedly shut-off. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and pulled the vehicle off to the shoulder. The contact stated that upon restarting the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated. Due to the failure and the warning light, the contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic. Upon inspection of the vehicle, the mechanic informed her that coolant had leaked into the oil cylinder and they referred her to a dealer for assistance. The contact then had the vehicle towed to the dealer where they diagnosed the vehicle with a defective water pump as well as engine failure. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and stated that the failure was caused due to poor maintenance. No further assistance was provided. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 144,000.

WHILE DRIVING THE CAR ON A COUNTY ROAD, WITH THE SPEED UNDER 40 MPH, AND FOLLOWING THE BEND IN THE ROAD TO LEAD TO GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR JERKED FORWARD AS IF I HIT SOMETHING. AS I CONTINUED TO DRIVE, THE CAR WAS MAKING LOUD CLINKING SOUNDS AND WAS JERKING IN MOTION. NO WARNING LIGHTS WENT ON. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE, CLANGING NOISES COULD BE HEARD AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO JERK FORWARD. THE CAR WAS UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN. AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC, IT WAS DETERMINE THE PROBLEM WAS THE TRANSFER CASE. THE SPLINES BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER CASE HAD BEEN EATEN AWAY BY RUST. THE SEAL HAD NOT KEPT WATER OUT AS IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO. A NEW TRANSFER CASE WAS ORDERED AS WELL AS A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE REPLACEMENT TRANSFER CASE HAD SHOWN SIGNS OF THE SAME ISSUES WITH THE SPLINES. ANOTHER (2ND ONE) TRANSFER CASE HAD TO BE ORDERED. I HAD PURCHASED THIS CAR IN FEBRUARY 2019 USED. THE CAR HAD A CLEAN TITLE, NO ACCIDENTS AND WAS SERVICED REGULARLY. WITHIN 1 YEAR, I HAD TO PAY OUT $5,000.00 TO REPLACE TRANSFER CASE AND TRANSMISSION. I LOST THE USE OF MY CAR FOR OVER 3 WEEKS (DUE TO THE PROBLEMS WITH GETTING A TRANSFER CASE THAT WAS GOOD). WHEN YOU GOOGLE THIS ISSUE, MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD SIMILAR ISSUES.

BRAKES REALLY HARD TO PRESS. WIFE THOUGHT CAR WASN'T GOING TO STOP AND SHE WAS GOING TO REAR END CAR IN FRONT OF HER. SOMETIMES BRAKE PEDAL WOULD FEEL SPONGY. OVER LAST MONTH THERE WAS AN INTERMITTENT STRANGE NOISE SOMETIMES WHEN CAR WAS STARTED. MAZDA DEALERSHIP IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM TO BE A DEFECTIVE BRAKE BOOSTER. I FOUND THAT NHTSA OPENED INVESTIGATION ON CX-9 BRAKE ISSUES PREVIOUSLY AND MAZDA IDENTIFIED PROBLEM TO BE BRAKE BOOSTER. MAZDA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 7 YEARS OR 90,000 MILES AND NHTSA CLOSED INVESTIGATION. OUR BRAKE BOOSTER FAILED AT 9 YEARS WITH 79,388 MILES ON THE CAR. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A BRAKE BOOSTER IS THE LIFE OF THE CAR. MAZDA NEVER INFORMED US ABOUT THIS POSSIBLE PROBLEM. OUR FAMILY COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED DUE TO THIS DEFECT. WHY DID THE NHTSA ACCEPT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AS A SOLUTION?

THE TRANSFER CASE IN OUR 2011 MAZDA CX-9 FAILED AT 130,000 MILES. I UNDERSTAND THAT MAZDA KNOW ABOUT A DEFECT AS TO THE PROXIMITY OF THE TRANSFER CASE TO THE EXHAUST. THE HEATED TRANSFER CASE LUBRICANT BECOME SLUDGE-LIKE AND CAUSES THE CASE TO FAIL ALSO AFFECTING THE TRANSMISSION SPLINES. THE HEATED LUBRICANT ESCAPED AND DRIPS ON THE EXHAUST AND FILLS THE VEHICLE WITH A TOXIC SMELLING GAS AND APPARENTLY CAN LIGHT ON FIRE. THE TRANSFER CASE FAILED WHILE DRIVING MAKING GETTING OUT OF TRAFFIC DIFFICULT. MAZDA ISSUED A BULLETIN IN 2014 EXTENDING THE WARRANTY TO 7 YEARS OR 90,000 MILES BUT DIDN'T INFORM ANY OF THE CUSTOMERS OF THIS PROBLEM. THERE IS NO SERVICE SCHEDULE FOR THE TRANSFER CASE AS RECOMMENDED BY MAZDA. OR ANY WAY I UNDERSTAND TO CHANGE THE LUBRICANT IN THE TRANSFER CASE. WITHOUT INFORMING US OF THE ISSUE OR HAVING RECOMMENDED ANY PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE MAZA CAUSED A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MY FAMILY. I HAVE CONTACTED MAZDA USA AND THEY HAVE BEEN UNHELPFUL.

I HAVE BEEN ADVISED THIS IS IN RELATION TO MAZDA SSP 93. MAZDA HAS ADVISED THAT IS IT MY RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE THIS VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, PAY FOR REPAIR LABOR, AND PAY FOR A RENTAL CAR WHILE REPAIRS ARE BEING MADE. I AM IN COMPLETE DISBELIEF THAT A KNOWN MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT RELATED TO BRAKING AND GENERAL SAFETY OF EVERYONE ON THE ROAD WAS NOT IMMEDIATELY ISSUED AS A RECALL. WE WERE PROVIDED ZERO NOTICE THAT THERE WAS EVEN POTENTIAL FOR BRAKE FAILURE.

THE A/C EVAPORATOR TANK CONDENSATION DRAIN CLOGS. OURS HAS CLOGGED TWICE AND THE FIRST TIME THE WATER IN THE TANK WOULD SLOSH AROUND AND HEAR IT WHEN MAKING A LEFT TURN. EVENTUALLY IT RUINED THE BLOWER MOTOR TO THE A/C, WHICH HAD TO BE REPLACED. NOW 19 MONTHS LATER, WE HEARD THE WATER AGAIN AND TOOK IT IN RIGHT AWAY AND IT WAS CLOGGED AGAIN AND THE BLOWER MOTOR HAS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT. THERE SHOULD BE A BETTER DRAIN SYSTEM. CLEARLY THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THE MAZDA CX-9 MODEL IN SEVERAL YEARS BECAUSE THERE ARE VIDEOS OF HOW TO UNCLOG THE A/C DRAIN.

WHEN TRYING TO STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND AS USUAL. EVEN WITH PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS I COULD, THE STOPPING DISTANCE INCREASED BY AT LEAST 30 FEET WHICH PLACED ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. THIS IS WORSE IN HOT CONDITIONS. THERE IS ALSO A HISSING NOISE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. THIS CONTINUES TO HAPPEN AND DOES NOT FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE. A MECHANIC SAID IT MAY BE THE POWER BRAKE BOOSTER. I NOTICED THAT THIS WAS INVESTIGATED, MAZDA ISSUED A SPECIAL SERVICE PROGRAM WHICH ENDED IN 2015. THE LETTER ISSUED AT THAT TIME SAID IT WAS NOT NECESSARY TO TAKE ACTION UNLESS THERE WAS A PROBLEM AT THAT TIME. MAZDA SHOULD EXTEND THE SERVICE PROGRAM BECAUSE THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE.

I BOUGHT THE CAR UNDER WARRANTY UP TO 90,000 MILES, WHEN I BOUGHT TRUCK 2015 AND TOOK IN WE TOLD DEALER THAT THE WAS CAR LEAKING BLACK SUBSTANCE THEY SAID THEY DID NOT SEE ANYTHING . WE TOOK IT FOR A RECALL AND TOLD THE DEALER SAME THING THIS TIME OFF AND ON IT WOULD SMELL LIKE BURN RUBBER BY THIS TIME WARRANTY WAS NOT COVERED. THE ISSUE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED UNTIL WE TOOK IT TO FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND ROUTINE INSPECTION AT 108 SOMETHING MILES THE SMELL OF BURNT RUBBER IS MORE PERSISTENT THE MECHANIC TOLD US THERE IS A LEAK IT LOOKS LIKE TRANSMISSION OIL AND IT IS DRIPPING TO AXLE.WE TOOK IN TRUCK TO FIRST MECHANIC TO GET A QUOTE HE COULD ONLY GET PART AT THE DEALER THEY SAID THAT THE WHOLE POWER TRANSFER CASE WOULD NEED TO BE CHANGE NOT JUST THE SEALS. TOOK IT IN FOR SECOND OPINION THAT MECHANIC SAID THAT THOSE PARTICULAR MODELS AND YEAR HAVE BEEN TAKEN IN FOR SAME ISSUE AND END UP HAVING TO CHANGE POWER TRANSFER CASE BECAUSE IT WAS POORLY MANUFACTURED THAT THE EXHAUST IS TO CLOSE IT MELTS RUBBERS AND LEAKS TRANSMISSION OIL THEREFORE CHANGING SEALS WILL NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM THE WHOLE THING NEEDS TO BE CHANGE. I HAVE 3 SMALL CHILDREN AND SMELL OF RUBBER IS CONCERNING IT UPSETTING THAT THERE IS MULTIPLE CARS FROM YEAR 2011 TO 2017 WITH THESE ISSUE'S AND THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL DOES A CAR NEED TO CATCH ON FIRE WITH KIDS IN IT. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING ISSUE AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED.

I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED DUE TO MY PERSONAL SAFETY. A COUPLE DAYS LATER I CALLED MAZDA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AND VOICED MY DISAPPOINTMENT THAT THIS PART WAS NEVER RECALLED AND PEOPLE ARE DRIVING AROUND IN UNSAFE CX9'S. IN DEC. 2018, I HAD MY 2011 MAZDA CX-9 TO A MAZDA DEALER SERVICE SHOP FOR WHAT I FELT LIKE A SPONGY BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD BE THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR'S BRAKES. AFTER A FEW MONTHS, WHILE THE SYMPTOM PERSISTED, I FOUND OUT THERE IS A KNOW ISSUE WITH THE BRAKE BOOSTER, WHICH MAZDA ACKNOWLEDGED AND ISSUED A WARRANTY EXTENSION (WHICH IS EXPIRED NOW). TWO DAYS AGO, WHILE TRAVELING IN TRAFFIC ON HIGHWAY, I HAD TO STOP THE CAR DUE TO A SUDDEN TRAFFIC JAM AND I FELT THE BRAKES BEING INSUFFICIENTLY EFFECTIVE TO STOP MY CAR SAFELY. AS SUCH, I PUMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL 3-4 TIMES AND THAT CAUSED THE PEDAL TO BECOME VERY HARD AND MADE MATTERS WORST- TO A POINT WHERE I HAD TO PULL ON THE SHOULDER TO AVOID REAR-ENDING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME.

Summary

OUR VEHICLE HAS WATER DRAINS OR "WEEP" LINES FOR THE SUNROOF. WE RECENTLY HAD THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM STOP/START, DASH LIGHTS REMAIN ON CONSTANTLY AFTER SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY DURING THE RAIN. WE LEARNED THAT IF THE DRAINS BECOME BLOCKED THAT WATER LEAKS INTO THE CABIN DIRECTLY ONTO THE BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM). BECAUSE THE BCM IS NOT IN A SEALED OR WATER-PROOF CASE, YET IS SOAKED IN THESE CONDITIONS, THE VEHICLE IS SUBJECT TO ELECTRICAL FAILURE AS A RESULT. REPLACING THE BCM COSTS ABOUT $1,000. WHEN WE STARTED THE CAR THE DASH LIGHTS THAT WARN OF AN ISSUE WITH MANY OF THE VEHICLES SAFETY SYSTEMS REMAINED ON. OTHERS WENT OFF AND SOFT OF FLASHED. WE COULD NOT DETERMINE IF THERE WAS REALLY AN ISSUE WITH ALL OF THE COMPONENTS FLASHING ON THE DASH SO WE DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE IT FOR FEAR OF AN ACCIDENT. OUR VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY (THANK GOD). WE WAITED FOR A WHILE AND WERE ABLE TO LEAVE FOR HOME, BUT THIS CONDITION IS CLEARLY A HUGE SAFETY RISK.

I WAS APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION WHERE I NEEDED TO STOP WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR, I WENT TO HIT MY BRAKE PEDAL AND IT WAS STUCK IN THE UP POSITION AND I COULDN'T STOP, I HAD TO QUICKLY TURN MY WHEEL TO HIT THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD TO SLOW DOWN AND TO AVOID BEING HIT IN THE INTERSECTION. THE CAR BRAKE THEN EVENTUALLY RELEASED AFTER HEARING A HISSING NOISE AND IT SLOWLY GOING INTO THE DOWN POSITION. WHEN I HAD A MECHANIC LOOK AT IT, HE EXPLAINED THAT IT CLEARLY IS A FAILURE OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER. WE RESEARCHED IT AND FOUND THAT SIMILAR ISSUES HAPPENED WITH MY MAKE AND MODEL IN THE PAST BUT MAZDA DOES NOT WANT TO HONOR THE DEFECT AS ITS SPECIAL SERVICE CALL ON IT ENDED IN 2015.

UNINFORMED ABOUT THE 2011 MAZDA CX9 BRAKE PROBLEM WHICH DID NOT SHOW UP UNTIL 8-22-2018, I WAS INFORMED THAT WHILE MAZDA EXTENDED THEIR WARRANTY, THE WARRANTY HAD ENDED IN 4-2018 OR WHEN THE CAR HAD 90,000 MILES LOGGED. (MY CAR IS AT 91,244 MILES.) THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, THE BRAKES ARE SUDDENLY NOT WORKING, AND THIS IS A DOCUMENTED PROBLEM WITH MY MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR. THERE IS NO MORE IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE IN YOUR CAR THAN THE BRAKES. YES, TEENAGE DRIVERS ' THAT'S EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN BLUETOOTH CONNECTIVITY. UNFORTUNATELY, OWNERS OF THE 2010-2011 CX-9 HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS BRINGING THEIR CAR TO A STOP. THE BRAKE SYMPTOMS CX-9 OWNERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN HOTTER CLIMATES, HAVE BEEN TELLING HARROWING TALES OF BRAKE PROBLEMS CENTERED AROUND: THE BRAKES BECAME HARD TO PUSH, THERE WAS A HISSING NOISE FROM THE PEDAL AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP UNTIL THE BRAKE PETAL WAS PUMPED.

CURRENT MILEAGE: 125707. NOTED BRAKE FADE, INSUFFICIENT BRAKING RESPONSE DURING NORMAL CITY DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCATION TO HAVE THE BRAKES EXAMINED. NEW FRONT ROTORS, CALIPERS AND BRAKE PADS WERE INSTALLED. BRAKE SYSTEM BLED AND VEHICLE TEST DRIVEN. NORMAL BRAKING DURING SPEED TESTS OF CITY DRIVING AND EMERGENCY BRAKING. VEHICLE THEN DRIVEN FOR 2-3 DAYS OF NORMAL OPERATION. OPERATOR DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND WHEN BRAKING TO A STOP ON APPROACH TO AN INTERSECTION NOTED THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR BEFORE VEHICLE WOULD SLOW. THE PEDAL HAD TO BE PUMPED TO OBTAIN A MEASURE OF BRAKE RESPONSE. THE VEHICLE TOOK LONGER TO SLOW TO A STOP. ALSO NOTED DURING BRAKING WAS A "HISSING" NOISE WHEN DEPRESSING THE PEDAL. PEDAL WAS THEN PUMPED UP ON APPROACH TO ANY ANTICIPATED STOPPING POINT. VEHICLE TAKEN TO BE CHECKED FOR POSSIBLE AIR IN THE BRAKE LINES. BRAKE SYSTEM CHECKED FOR AIR IN THE BRAKE LINES AND NONE FOUND. TAKEN TO A THIRD-PARTY SHOP FOR ANALYSIS. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE MAZDA OEM POWER BRAKE BOOSTER HAD FAILED AND PER THE MECHANIC (NOTE ATTACHED PDF) THE DIAPHRAGM HAD BECOME "BRITTLE" AND THE BRAKE POWER BOOSTER FAILURE CAUSED THE "HISSING" NOISES AND THE BRAKES TO BE CAUSING THE BRAKES TO BECOME UNRESPONSIVE. THE OEM BRAKE BOOSTER HAD TO BE REPLACED. DURING A REVIEW OF ONLINE INFORMATION IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE NHTSA HAD CONDUCTED AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE ISSUE OF MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER LEAKAGE REGARDING THIS GENERATION OF MAZDA BRAKE BOOSTERS. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN TO A MAZDA DEALERSHIP FOR PRIOR RECALL REPLACEMENT OF OTHER DEFECTS, HOWEVER THIS POTENTIAL DEFECT WAS NOT ADDRESSED.

Summary

MY BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND AS THEY NORMALLY WOULD UPON APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION ON THURSDAY MORNING. IT FELT ALMOST LIKE THERE WAS A PILLOW UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS OCCURRED ONCE ON THURSDAY MORNING, AND ONCE ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON. FRIDAY EVENING BRAKE FLUID WAS FILLED TO ENSURE THAT THERE WAS NOT A LACK OF FLUID CAUSING THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM AGAIN OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES ON FRIDAY EVENING AFTER ADDING BRAKE FLUID. BY SATURDAY MORNING IT WAS WORSENING BOTH IN FREQUENCY (OCCURRING WITH EVERY APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE) AND SEVERITY (FELT AS THOUGH NO MATTER HOW LONG AND HARD I APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES IT WOULD NOT PERFORM IN A MANNER THAT WOULD BE EFFECTIVE IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN VERY SLOW SPEEDS WITH EXCESSIVE SPACE BETWEEN ALL VEHICLES). ON SATURDAY IT ALSO BEGAN MAKING A HISSING NOISE WHICH OCCURRED AS I WAS DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THEN STOPPED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS FINALLY FULLY DEPRESSED (WHICH TOOK AN EXTRAORDINARILY LONG TIME). I FELT IT WAS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE OTHER THAN TO GET IT TO OUR MECHANIC WHICH I DID ON MONDAY MORNING. OUR MECHANIC TESTED IT AND DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER HAD FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED.

TAKATA RECALL I HAD TO PUT IN MY VIN TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR RECALLS & WAS SENT A MESSAGE BACK STATING THERE ARE NO RECALLS ON MY CAR. WHEN I LOOKED IT UP ON YOUR WEBSITE IT SAYS MY CAR IS IN RECALL FOR AIRBAGS AND LOWER CONTROL ARM. BUT ACCORDING TO THE MAZDA DEALER & THE MAZDA WEBSITE I DON'T HAVE ANY RECALLS ON MY CAR!!! SO TO DATE I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIX THE ITEMS THAT ARE BEING RECALLED. WHEN THE RECALL FOR THE AIRBAGS CAME OUT I CONTACTED MAZDA & THERE WAS NO RECALL. AGAIN WHEN THE RECALL WAS EXPANDED I CONTACTED MAZDA. MY VEHICLE WAS NOT ON THE LIST. I WENT TO YOUR SITE TO SEE WHAT YOU HAD ABOUT MY CAR & DISCOVERED YOU HAVE 2 OPEN RECALLS ON MY CAR THAT AS FAR AS FAR AS MAZDA IS CONCERNED I HAVE NONE. YET YOU HAVE ON YOUR WEBSITE THAT I DO SO I AM TRYING TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS. DOES MY CAR HAVE ANY RECALLS OR NOT? I ALSO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE TRANSFER CASE ON MY CAR. NOW WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR THE REASON WHY I BOUGHT IT WITH HIGH MILEAGE WAS BECAUSE THE CAR WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CERTIFIED PREOWNED. I WAS GIVEN THE 1 YEAR WARRANTY. THEN I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL ON THE TRANSFER CASE WOULD BE VALID UNTIL 100000 MILE. SO WHEN MY TRANSFER CASE NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED AT 92000 MILES. I CONTACTED MAZDA & AFTER MONTHS OF BACK & FORTH I WAS TOLD I DIDN'T QUALIFY FOR THEM TO TAKE CARE OF THE REPAIR EVEN THOUGH IT LOOKS LIKE A MONSTER TOOK A BITE OUT OF THE TRANSFER CASE AT 92000 MILES BECAUSE ACCORDING TO THEIR RECORDS MY CAR WAS NOT CERTIFIED PREOWNED. IASKED TO RECONSIDER BECSUSE THE TRANSFER CASE WSS COMPLETELY DESTROYED ST 92000. THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT MAKE AN EXCEPTION WITH ME BECSUSE THEN THEY'D HAVE TO MAKE EXCEPTIONS FOR OTHERS. I WAS TOLD TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE DEALER I'M GETTING IN TOUCH ABOUT THAT THIS WEEK. THERE IS SOMETHING ODD ABOUT ALL OF THIS. HOW COME MAZDA DOESN'T HAVE THE RECALLS FOR MY CAR THAT YOU HAVE?

DEALER CONTACTED THE WARRANTY DEPARTMENT TO FILE A CLAIM AND SAID THAT IS WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE THEY FELT IT WAS DUE TO DIRT AND NOT A FAULTY SENSOR. THE DEALER NEVER CONFIRMED ONE OR THE OTHER. SECOND ISSUE IS RELATED TO A HISSING NOISE COMING FROM THE BREAK PEDDLE. RESEARCH SUGGESTED MAZDA WAS INVESTIGATED BY NHTSA BACK IN 2014 AND INSTEAD OF A RECALL, MAZDA ISSUED AND EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR 7 YEARS OR 90K MILES. Summary

I WAS DRIVING MY 2011 MAZDA CX-9 AND THE CAR WAS SMELLING LIKE IT WAS BURNING AND THEN IT SOUNDED LIKE A PILE OF ROCKS BEING TOSSED AROUND I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SOMETHING EXPLODED THE CAR CAME TO AN ABRUPT STOP AND SMOKE CAME FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. I HAD IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND WAS TOLD THE TRANSFER CASE WENT OUT AND MESSED UP THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET I FOUND OUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT MAZDA HAS KNOWN ABOUT FOR SOME TIME AND HAS FAILED TO NOTIFY THE CUSTOMER. THIS PROBLEM HAS APPARENTLY CAUSED VEHICLES TO CATCH FIRE WHILE DRIVING. AFTER CONTACTING MAZDA THEY SAY THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 90,000 MILES BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT HASN'T NOTIFIED THE OWNERS OF THE VEHICLE. MAZDA SAYS IT HASN'T BEEN RECALLED BECAUSE IT ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE (WHICH I DISAGREE WITH, IT COULD CAUSE GREAT HARM OR DEATH) AND IT HASN'T BEEN REPORTED ENOUGH. MAZDA SAID THEY WOULD REPLACE THE TRANSFER CASE BUT NOT THE LABOR OR TRANSMISSION. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED SINCE APPARENTLY IT'S HAPPENING IN ALL CX-9 VEHICLES BETWEEN CERTAIN YEARS. IT'S A DEFECTIVE PART, NOTHING I DID AND I AM LEFT TO PAY TO FIX A PROBLEM THAT MAZDA KNOWS IS THEIR FAULT. MY CAR HAS BETWEEN 90,400 AND 90,500 MILES AND I SHOULDN'T BE HAVING THIS KIND OF MAJOR PROBLEM WITH A VEHICLE UNDER 100,000 MILES. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING DOWN AN INTERSTATE AT 70MPH I HAVE TO WONDER IF I WOULD HAVE HAD AN ACCIDENT WITH INJURY OR IF MY CAR WOULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. I BELIEVE THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED. *TR

SO FOR 2000 MILES PAST ORIGINAL RECALL MILEAGE AND BECAUSE MAZDA HAD NO RECORD OF MY CAR BEING PRE-OWNED I HAD TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING MYSELF. IT LOOKED LIKE A MONSTER HAD TAKEN A BITE OF THE PART IN QUESTION. I STILL HAVE PART CAUSE I 'M STILL TRYING TO GET MY MONEY BACK TO NO AVAIL#!!! IT WAS STATIONARY WHEN THE DEFECT BECAME EVIDENT.

Summary

2011 MAZDA CX-9 TRANSFER CASE BREAKDOWN WHILE MOVING DUE TO FLUID LEAKING OUT, CAUSING SEVERE WEAR ON THE TRANSMISSION AND DISABLING VEHICLE. MY WIFE HEARD A STRANGE SOUND 2 WEEKS AGO AND WHEN SHE PARKED THE CAR IN THE GARAGE, THERE WAS A STRANGE SMELL, LIKE BURNT WIRE OR ROTTEN EGG SMELL. HAD IT EVALUATED AT THE LOCAL GARAGE AND THEY DIAGNOSED LEAKING FLUID FROM TRANSFER CASE, WHICH DESTROYED THE BEARINGS AND THREADS AROUND THE SHAFT. THE MECHANIC SAYS THIS FLUID IS NEVER SUPPOSED TO HAVE TO BE CHANGED ACCORDING TO THE MAZDA MANUAL. AND THERE IS SO LITTLE FLUID IN THE TRANSFER CASE, IT IS HARD TO DETECT THE LEAKING WHEN IT HAPPENS. I CHECKED ON GOOGLE AND THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR REPORTS OF TRANFER CASE FAILURE. ONE GUY HAD FOUR TRANSFER CASES INSTALLED IN THE FIRST 20,000 MILES AFTER THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW. THIS IS DANGEROUS. IF THE TRANSFER CASE FAILS AT NIGHT OR DURING A SNOWSTORM, PEOPLE COULD GET KILLED. NOT TO MENTION THE $3,000.00 TO $8,000.00 BILL FOR REPAIR DEPENDING ON WHETHER IT IS JUST THE TRANSFER CASE OR IF IT ALSO THE TRANSMISSION THAT NEEDS REPAIR. THIS MATTER SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AS A RECALL ITEM. APPARENTLY, THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL SERVICE BULLETINS AND EXTENSIONS OF TRANSFER CASE WARRANTIES OFFERED BY MAZDA. THE PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD, WITH THE EDMUND'S COMPLAINTS OF FAILURE INCLUDING THE YEARS 2008-2014. IT DOES NOT NECESSARILY RLEATE TO THE AMOUNT OF MILES ON THE VEHICLE BECAUSE MANY HAVE FAILED SHORTLY AFTER BEING PURCHASED NEW. THE FACT THAT MAZDA HAS HANDLED THIS ON AN INDIVIDUAL EVENT BASIS AND VERY QUIETLY HAS KEPT THIS FROM BECOMING NEWSWORTHY BUT THE PROBLEM IS SO WIDESPREAD, DANGEROUS AND COSTLY, THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD GET INVOLVED.

Summary

MY VEHICLE HAS TWO UNRESOLVED RECALLS. THE FIRST DATES BACK TO JULY 2015 RELATED TO THE FRONT SUSPENSION BALL JOINT FITTING. THIS HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF SOUTH BAY MAZDA ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS AND THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED NOR HAVE I EVER RECEIVED A RESPONSE FROM THEM. A SECOND RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR MAZDA CX-9S RELATED TO THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG IN MAY 2016. DUE TO THE POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AT SOUTH BAY MAZDA I'VE TAKEN MY BUSINESS TO CULVER CITY MAZDA. CULVER CITY MAZDA GAVE ME A RENTAL VEHICLE ON AUG 8TH 2016 WHILE MAZDA NA ORDERS AND DELIVERS PARTS. I'VE HAD THE RENTAL VEHICLE FOR NEARLY THREE MONTHS WITH NO RESOLUTION IN SIGHT. IT'S VERY STRESSFUL TO DRIVE A RENTAL VEHICLE WHICH I WILL BE LIABLE FOR IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO IT WHILE IN MY POSSESSION. IT'S ALSO VERY DISTURBING THAT THESE RECALLS ARE TAKING SO LONG TO REMEDY. I'M EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH MAZDA AT THIS POINT. WE'RE GROWING MORE CONCERNED WITH WHAT THE OUTCOME OF THESE RECALLS WILL BE AND FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR FAMILY IN OUR CAR WHEN IT'S RETURNED.

BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER HISSING AND SQUEALING WHILE ENGINE IS IN IDLE. AFTER REVVING (AND RELEASING) TO 2000 RPM'S AND APPLYING (HOLDING) BRAKE PRESSURE SIMULTANEOUSLY, THE BUILD UP VACUUM PRESSURE DOES NOT ALLOW ENGINE TO RETURN TO IDLE RPM. RPM HANGS AT 1500 RPM'S. IF VEHICLE IS IN DRIVE WHILE ACCOMPLISHING THIS THEN THE BRAKE PRESSURE APPLIED IS NOT ENOUGH TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. AFTER FIND THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE I WENT ONLINE AND FOUND PREVIOUS MESSAGE BOARDS ABOUT THIS ISSUED WERE POSTED IN EARLY 2014 BUT A RECALL WAS NEVER ISSUED. REPORTED THE ISSUE TO MAZDA (20161012) BUT WAS TOLD THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE IS 30K OUTSIDE OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THEN THE ISSUE BELONGS TO THE CONSUMER. (MAZDAREF 1-368-227-539).

DRIVING FROM WORK TODAY ON A HIGHWAY BEHIND AN ELECTRIC TRUCK THAT STOPPED ABRUPTLY, I APPLIED MY BREAKS KIND OF QUICKLY AND AFTER STOPPING AND TAKING OFF AGAIN WHEN TRYING TO APPLY BRAKES TO SLOW THE PEDDLE WOULD BE REALLY HARD TO PRESS AND IT FELT LIKE THE PEDDLE WAS PUSHING UP AGAINST YOU. THERE IS A HISSING NOISE WHEN BRAKE IS APPLIED AND IF YOU PRESS THE BRAKE ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR THERE IS A SQUEALING NOISE. THE HISSING NOISE IS INSIDE THE CARE AND SOUNDS TO BE COMING FROM AROUND THE BRAKE PEDDLE AREA. THE CAR CAN NOT BE DROVE AT THIS TIME BECAUSE WHEN IN MOVEMENT THE BRAKE IS REALLY HARD TO PRESS AND IT TAKES VERY LONG DISTANCES TO GET STOPPED. I CAN'T PUT MY CHILDREN IN THIS CAR TO GO ANYPLACE!

I TOOK MY CAR TO HALL IN BROOKFIELD WI TO FIX A RECALL ISSUE. THEY CHARGED ME OVER $500 FOR THIS ISSUE AND I BELIEVE THE ISSUE WAS EXASPERATED BY THE RECALL ISSUE AND I AM NOT SURE WHY I HAD TO PAY. I HONESTLY BELIEVE IT WAS A WAY FOR THE DEALER TO CHARGE ME FOR THE RECALL WORK BECAUSE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FREE. I AM ATTACHING RECEIPTS FOR THE WORK HALL DID TO THIS COMPLAINT. NOW MY CAR IS HAVING ISSUES WITH PROPERLY ACCELERATING AND IS VERY LOUD.

BRAKES RESIST WHEN TRYING TO STOP, TAKING LONGER TO COME TO COMPLETE STOP(AT ANY SPEEDS). ONCE STOPPED BRAKE COMPRESSES ALL THE WAY DOWN ON ITS OWN, FEELS LIKE THE CAR WILL START ROLL. WHEN APPLYING BRAKES IT MAKES AN AIR DECOMPRESSION SOUND. WHEN BACKING OUT OF PARKED POSITION AND BRAKING, CAR COASTS A LITTLE WHEN BRAKES ARE COMPLETELY PRESSED DOWN. VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT I REALIZED WAS RELATED TO THE EXTENDED WARRANTY BRAKE BOOSTER ISSUE THAT I RECEIVED EARLIER IN THE YEAR. I ATTEMPTED TO GET THIS REPAIR AT THE FIRST SERVICE I SCHEDULED AFTER RECEIVING NOTICE AND MAZDA SERVICE DEPARTMENT REFUSED TO COMPLETE SERVICE BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T THINK MY CAR NEEDED IT.

MY CAR IS HAVING A RECALL REPAIRED FOR SOME FRONT END ISSUE. IN SEPT 2015 I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR INSPECTION, AND ALL 4 TIRES HAD GREAT TREAD ON THEM. MAZDA DIDN'T HAVE PARTS IN SEPTEMBER TO FIX MY CAR. BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 2015, AND APRIL 2016 MY DRIVERS SIDE FRONT TIRE IS BALD ON THE OUTSIDE TO THE POINT IT'S ALMOST UNSAFE TO DRIVE. IT IS THE ONLY TIRE THAT IS LIKE THIS.. ALL 4 TIRES WERE REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO. PAUL MILLER MAZDA CALLED ME AND INFORMED ME I NEEDED NEW TIRES AND AN ALIGNMENT AND I INFORMED THEM IT HAD TO BE RELATED TO THE RECALL DUE TO ONLY THAT TIRE, AND THE FACT THAT THE TREAD WAS THE SAME AS THE OTHER TIRES IN SEPTEMBER. WE COULD FEEL THE FRONT END ISSUES IN THE VEHICLE FOR 7 MONTHS WAITING ON THE PARTS. I AM NOW STUCK HAVING TO BUY A NEW TIRE AND PAY FOR AN ALIGNMENT OUT OF MY OWN POCKET BECAUSE IT OOK THEM 7 MONTHS TO GET PARTS IN TO FIX MY MAZDA.

SEVERAL TIMES WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, AND THE DRIVER ATTEMPTS TO APPLY THE BRAKES, THE PEDAL SEEMS UNRESPONSIVE. DURING THESE INCIDENTS, THE BRAKE PEDAL IS VERY HARD TO APPLY, NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. THANKFULLY WHEN THIS TRANSPIRED (5-10 TIMES OVER THE LAST 2-3 WEEKS), WE WERE TRAVELING RELATIVELY SLOWLY. AFTER EXERTING MUCH MORE THAN NORMAL FORCE, THE BRAKE PEDAL SEEMS TO DEPRESS AND HELP BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP, ALTHOUGH NOT AT THE NORMAL RATE OF BRAKING. ADDITIONALLY, DURING ONE OF THESE INCIDENTS, WHICH HAPPENED TODAY, THE BRAKES REMAINED ENGAGED, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE, EVEN AFTER SHIFTING TO PARK, AND TURNING OFF THE ENGINE. EVENTUALLY, AFTER SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE A SECOND TIME AND WAITING AWHILE, THE BRAKES RELEASED. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREETS, AND TRYING TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT. MOST OF THE OTHER INCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED DURING CITY DRIVING, BUT THEY HAVE ALSO OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AS WELL.

ON 24 JULY 2015, WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, THE DRIVER IN FRONT OF ME EXECUTED AN EMERGENCY BRAKING TO AVOID A COLLISION WHICH CAUSED ME TO DO THE SAME. FROM THE MOMENT I TRIED TO ACTUATE THE BRAKE PEDAL, IT FELT AS IF THE PEDAL WAS IN THE FLOOR AND IMMOVABLE. LITTLE, IF ANY, BRAKE FORCE WAS APPLIED AND REQUIRED BOTH FEET WITH ALL THE POWER OF MY LEGS TO GET EVEN A SMALL AMOUNT OF BRAKING. I HAD TO IMMEDIATELY DIVE INTO THE MEDIAN AT SPEEDS OF 60-65 MPH TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THIS CAUSED TWO TIRES TO HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I HAD 3 CHILDREN IN CAR SEATS, MYSELF AND MY OLDEST SON IN OUR CX9. I CRESTED A HILL AND STARTED DOWN THE OTHER SIDE AND I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND THEY WERE HARD AND WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO STOP. I ALMOST HIT THE TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME. HE WAS THANKFULLY WATCHING HIS MIRROR AND RAN A RED LIGHT TO GET OUT OF THE WAY SO I DIDN'T HIT HIM. AFTER STANDING ON THE BRAKES FOR WHAT SEEMED LIKE A LIFE TIME THEY FINALLY ENGAGED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION AND HISSED WITH A LOUD SQUEALING NOISE. I REMOVED MYSELF FROM THE INTERSECTION AND AT 5 MILES PER HOUR WENT TO THE NEAREST MECHANIC. I WAS TOLD TO CALL MAZDA BECAUSE THE POWER ASSIST BRAKING SYSTEM HAD FAILED. I CALLED MAZDA AND THEY TOLD ME NOT DRIVE IT AS IT WAS UNSAFE. THEY WOULD HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP AND WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT. THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP IS DOLAN MAZDA KIA IN RENO NEVADA. I WAS INFORMED BY STEVE TO LOOK AT IT IN THE SHOP I WAS LOOKING AT $125. AND THAT IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE MY CX9 HAS OVER A 100K MLS. AND THE WARRANTY RAN OUT AT 90K. THE BRAKES FAILED UNEXPECTEDLY WITH NO WARNING. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE FROM MAZDA NOR THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED IT FROM. I SEE THAT THE NHTSA HAS CLOSED IT'S INVESTIGATION WITH NO RECALL OR THAT MAZDA CUSTOMERS WERE INFORMED. MY FAMILY COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR EVEN KILLED.

TRAVELING WITH FAMILY ON I95 STARTED SMELLING A BURNING ODOR. LATER DEVELOPED A DISTINCT VIBRATION AND GRINDING SOUND. GOT IT HOME NOW NON USABLE. VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED AT MY SHOP , A LOSS DUE TO HURRICANE SANDY, AND AS SUCH BRANDED. FAULKNER MAZDA AND MAZDA CORPORATION BOTH DENIED ANY WARRANTY CLAIM DUE TO TITLE BRANDING EVEN THOUGH BOTH ADMITTED IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE , ALTHOUGH THE SERVICE DEPT AT FAULKNER DID ADD "THAT ANYTHING COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT". I AM JUST LUCKY THAT IT DIDN'T GRENADE WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE AT SPEED WITH MY FAMILY IN THE CAR. CORPORATE MAZDA ADVISED ME TO SAVE MY RECEIPTS IN CASE THEY ISSUE A RECALL IN THE FUTURE. WILL NOT RECOMMEND MAZDA TO ANYONE IN THE FUTURE. *TR

THE MAZDA 2011 CX-9 CROSSOVER SUV SEEMS TO HAVE A DEFECT IN THE POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU). MAZDA NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS ISSUED A LETTER TO MAZDA OWNERS INFORMING ABOUT A SPECIAL SERVICE PROGRAM TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR THE REPAIR OF THE POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU) ON "CERTAIN 2010-2011 CX-9 ALL-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES PRODUCED FROM JULY 28, 2009 THROUGH DECEMBER 2, 2013." I QUOTE THE LETTER. ON MARCH 18, 2015, I BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE A PROBLEM WHEREBY MY 2011 CX-9 MADE A GRINDING AND SNAPPING SOUND WHEN IN REVERSE MODE. THIS BEHAVIOR WAS FOLLOWED BY A PUNGENT ODOR IN THE CABIN. I CONTACTED THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP AND TRIED TO GET AN IMMEDIATE APPOINTMENT TO EXAMINE THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT ACCOMMODATE ME NOR EXPRESSED ANY AWARENESS OF THE SYMPTOMS. YET, THE LETTER WAS PUBLISHED SINCE LAST YEAR. I CONTACTED A LOCAL MECHANIC AND HAD THEM INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THE LETTER FROM MAZDA. IN FACT, THE MECHANIC IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH MAZDA AND LINCOLN BRAND VEHICLES. CURRENTLY, I AM HAVING TROUBLE GETTING IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE FROM THE DEALERSHIP OR MAZDA NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS. I CALLED SEVERAL TIMES TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE UNRESPONSIVE. IS NHTSA AWARE OF THIS PTU DEFECT AND WHAT WAS NECESSARY TO REQUIRE A RECALL/REPLACEMENT OF THE PTU 'PRIOR' TO INEVITABLE FAILURE AS WE EXPERIENCED? THANK YOU. *TR

THIS IS THE SECOND HAPPENED TO MY MAZDA CX9, 2011. THE BRAKE STARTED TO HAVE HISSING SOUNDS WHILE STEPPING ON BRAKE. THE BRAKE PEDAL IS HARDER THAN USUAL TO DEPRESS. THE BRAKE FUNCTIONS HAS BEEN REDUCED AROUND 30~50% LESS THAN NORMAL. THIS HAS PUT DERIVING SAFETY IN JEOPARDIZED. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME MY CX9'S BRAKE BOOSTER FAILURE. THE FIRST TIME IS IN YEAR 2012. I WORKED WITH MAZDA TO HAVE BRAKE BOOSTER REPLACED. HOWEVER, DEALER SEEMED NOT REALIZED THERE IS A WARRANTY EXTENDED PROGRAM FROM MAZDA --- MAZDA SPECIAL SERVICE PROGRAM -93 (SSP93). THIS IS OFFICIAL RECORDED IN NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE14005. DEALER TRIED CONTACTING MAZDA FOR THIS PROGRAM. BUT MAZDA KEPT NOT RESPONDING, IT HAS BEEN TWO WEEKS BUT STILL NOT MESSAGE BACK FROM THEM. I PAID THE REPAIRMEN OF THE DEFECTIVE BRAKE BOOSTER (PARTS & LABOR) FROM MY OWN PACKET AT THIS POINT. DESPITE THE DEFECTIVE PARTS FOR JEOPARDIZING DRIVING SAFETY, MY COMPLAINTS TO MAZDA IS ALSO FOR THEIR NON-RESPONSIVE TO CUSTOMER'S WARRANTY PROGRAM WHICH THEY HAVE MADE.

I ACTUALLY NOTICED WHEN I STARTED MY VEHICLE UP AND PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, IT SEEMED TO SLOWLY SINK ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND MADE A HISSING NOISE. THE NOISE ONLY STOPPED WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL. AS I WAS DRIVING, ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I HAD DRAMATICALLY REDUCED STOPPING PERFORMANCE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKE. I'VE GONE THROUGH SEVERAL STOP SIGNS AND HAVE ALMOST REAR ENDED OTHER VEHICLES. THIS SEEMS TO HAVE SUDDENLY HAPPENED, I FIRST NOTICED IT ON 3/1/15. THIS WASN'T HAPPENING ON OR BEFORE 2/26/15. I SUSPECT THE POWER BOOSTER OR MASTER CYLINDER HAVE FAILED, THOUGH I'M CONCERNED THAT THIS HAPPENED WITH ONLY 61,000 MILES ON IT. *TR

I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 40MPH WHEN I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES AND IT WAS HARD AND WOULD NOT STOP. I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES WHEN IT FINALLY SLOWED DOWN BUT IT SLOWLY ROLLED TO A STOP. AFTER A FEW DAYS OF DRIVING LIKE THIS I KNEW TO START BREAKING WAY IN ADVANCE BUT NOW THE CAR WOULD SUDDENLY TURN OFF WHEN AT A COMPLETE STOP WHILE WAITING AT A RED LIGHT. THE WHOLE ENGINE WOULD TURN OFF AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WOULD TURN ON. I WOULD TURN THE ENGINE KEY OFF AND THEN TURN IT ON AND THE ENGINE WOULD TURN ON AFTER THE SECOND TRY. I WAS FREAKING OUT EVERY TIME IF GOT INTO THE CAR BECAUSE I KNEW IT WOULD STOP ON ME WHENEVER I WOULD STOP AT A LONG STOP LIGHT. I FINALLY TOOK MY CAR TO A MAZDA SERVICE CENTER AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE BRAKE BOOSTER. IT'S BEEN 5MONTHS AND MY CAR IS RUNNING GREAT. WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC MY BRAKES STARTED MALFUNCTIONING. THE TRAFFIC AHEAD OF MY VEHICLE CAME TO A SUDDEN HALT. I APPLIED MY BRAKES (100 FT. FROM COLLISION), HOWEVER, THEY FAILED TO DECELERATE THE VEHICLE- IT DIDN'T FEEL AS THOUGH I HAD APPLIED THEM. IN ORDER TO PREVENT A COLLISION I DEPRESSED THE PEDDLE WITH ALL OF MY STRENGTH (60 FT. FROM COLLISION). GRADUALLY, AND INSUFFICIENTLY, THE CAR BEGAN TO DECELERATE. WITH THE BRAKE PEDDLE FULLY DEPRESSED. SUDDENLY (25 FT. FROM COLLISION) THE BRAKES TIGHTLY GRASPED THE ROTOR AND THE TIRES SCREECHED- THRUSTING THE PASSENGER AND I FORWARD. THEN THE BRAKED RELEASED AND GRASPED AGAIN.THE VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED INCHES SHORT OF A COLLISION WITH THE AHEAD OF MINE. FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS, THE CAR HAS CONTINUED TO EXHIBIT SIMILAR SYMPTOMS. WHEN I FULLY DEPRESS THE BREAK THE VEHICLE MAKES A HISSING SOUND AND THE RPMS DROP- ON ONE OCCASION THIS ACTION CAUSED THE CUV TO SHUT OFF. I HAVE TO REMAIN AN ADDITIONAL 50 FT. BEHIND OTHER VEHICLES IN ORDER TO INSURE THAT I HAVE SUFFICIENT TIME TO STOP. *TR

WHILE THE CAR STILL SLOWS DOWN WHEN THE BREAKS ARE APPLIED, THE PEDAL HAS BECOME VERY HARD AND THE ABILITY TO STOP SUDDENLY IS SEVERELY COMPRISED (EVEN AT A SLOW SPEED). I WAS DRIVING MY SON TO THE DOCTORS OFFICE WHEN I REALIZED THE BRAKES DID NOT FEEL RIGHT. I TOLD MY HUSBAND THAT I FELT A LOT OF RESISTANCE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. SO WHEN I GOT HOME I HAD MY HUSBAND DRIVE THE CAR AND HE SAID HE DID NOT FEEL ANYTHING UNTIL LATER THAT NIGHT WHEN HE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE HE FREAKED OUT CAUSE HE SAID HE FELT AS IF THE CAR WASN'T GOING TO STOP AFTER PUSHING ON THE BRAKES. HE HAD TO PULL OFF OF THE HIGHWAY AND TAKE THE BACK ROADS HOME AT A LOW SPEED AND GIVE HIMSELF PLENTY OF DISTANCE FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF HIM IN ORDER TO BRAKE SO HE WOULD NOT SLAM INTO THEIR CAR. ALSO, WHEN APPLYING ALL THE PRESSURE YOU COULD TO THE BRAKES, A LOUD HISSING SOUND COULD BE HEARD AS WELL. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO OUR MAZDA DEALER WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED AND AFTER THEY LOOKED AT IT, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BAD BRAKE BOOSTERS AND THAT WE WERE LUCKY WE WEREN'T IN AN ACCIDENT. AFTER HEARING THIS AND RESEARCHING IT, IT REALLY UPSET US THAT MAZDA HAS HAD THIS ISSUE WITH THE SAME MODEL VEHICLE OF OTHER YEARS.... WHY HASN'T A RECALL BEEN DONE? ARE THEY WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO LOSE THEIR LIFE BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE?! I THANK GOD WE WERE ABLE TO STOP OUR CAR BUT THERE WAS NO WARNING OR LEAD UP TO THIS INCIDENT. Summary

AUGUST 6TH 2013 MY WIFE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE BRAKES ON HER 2011 MAZDA CX9 MAKING A HISSING TYPE SOUND AND BRAKES FEELING MUSHY AND NOT RESPONDING AS NORMAL. THE NEXT DAY SHE ADVISED THE BRAKES WERE WORSE SO WE PARKED THE CAR UNTIL THE 9TH. THE CX9 HAS 46000. MILES. THE CAR RECEIVES REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND WAS TAKEN TO TOM BUSH MAZDA (JACKSONVILLE FL.) FOR DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM. WE WERE ADVISED THAT THE ISSUE WAS A VACUUM LEAK FROM THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND IT HAD TO BE REPAIRED AT THE COST OF $695.88. (PART = $130. W/ LABOR $503.) WE LEARNED THAT OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT A RECALL MIGHT HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR THE PREVIOUS YEAR CX9S. THERE WAS NO CONSIDERATION ON REPAIR COSTS. OUR ISSUE IS THE BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER FAILURE SEEMS TO BE AN ABNORMALLY COMMON COMPLAINT ON MAZDA'S CX9 VEHICLES AND THE FACT THAT THIS INVOLVES BRAKE FAILURES, IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT MAY LEAD TO A CATASTROPHIC CRASH AT HIGHER SPEEDS. I BELIEVE OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS NOTED ABOUT MAZDA CX9 BRAKE ISSUES IN THE NHTSA WARRANT A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION AND POSSIBLE RECALL. WE WILL RETAIN THE DEFECTIVE PART. FURTHER NOTE, THE MAZDA DEALERSHIP RELEASED THE VEHICLE TO MY FATHER W/O PROPERLY INSPECTING THEIR WORK. THE VEHICLE WAS RELEASED TO US W/O THE BRAKE LINES BEING BLED PROPERLY WHICH CAUSED THE BRAKES TO FAIL WHILE AT THE DEALERSHIP. IT TOOK ANOTHER DAY TO FIX THAT ISSUE. *TR

SIMILAR TO OTHER COMPLAINTS HERE, I RECENTLY STARTED NOTICING HISSING WHEN I PRESSED MY BRAKES....... I NOTICED THAT I WAS HAVING A HARD TIME COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. I TOOK MY CX9 IN TODAY AUGUST 14, 2013 TO GUNTHER MAZDA IN FORT LAUDERDALE. I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE A SIMPLE CHANGE OF BRAKE PADS, LITTLE DID I KNOW I WAS IN FOR $700!!!!!- APPARENTLY THIS IS NOTHING NEW FOR MAZDA, THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION GOING ON BY THE NHTSA FOR THE 2008 CX9 MODEL AND GUESS WHAT? THE 2011 SEEMS TO BE HAVING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. THE MECHANIC SAID THE PADS ARE FINE BUT THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BOOSTER NEED TO BE REPLACED. I'M GOING TO CALL MAZDA USA TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO BUT UNLESS EVERYONE STARTS DEMANDING ANSWERS THEY'RE GOING TO BE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK. IT'LL TAKE A STRONG EFFORT TO MAKE THEM ISSUE A RECALL. THIS IS MY LAST MAZDA. I ASKED IF THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE THEY SAID IT WAS AND TO GO SLOWLY UPON REACHING A LIGHT AND MAKE SURE TO PUMP THE BREAKS SO I CAN STOP IN TIME AND NOT GO THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. THIS IS VERY ALARMING TO ME SINCE AN ACCIDENT CAN OCCUR THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE AND I NEED TO GET BACK AND FORTH TO WORK. THEY TOLD ME THEY NEEDED TO CALL THE MAZDA HELP LINE TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE BREAKS. AFTER RESEARCHING ON LINE TODAY MAZDA CX9 BRAKE ISSUES AM VERY INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT THEY SAY AND IF IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED SINCE 2008 WITH THIS MODEL. I AM VERY UPSET SINCE I TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF MY CAR AND ALWAYS TAKE IT TO THE MAZDA DEALER FOR SERVICE. MY VEHICLE IS AT THE 37,000 MARK WHICH APPEARS TO BE THE POINT WHEN THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR OTHER VEHICLES. I HOPE THAT MAZDA WILL COVER THE COSTS TO FIX THE CAR AND THAT I DON'T GET INTO AN ACCIDENT BETWEEN NOW AND WEDNESDAY. *TR

Summary

UPON LIGHT BRAKING I HEAR A HISSING SOUND. THE BRAKES ARE INEFFECTIVE AT SLOW SPEEDS. IT TAKES A LONGER TIME AND REQUIRES APPLICATION OF GREATER BRAKING FORCE TO GET THE CAR TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR INSPECTION AND AM AWAITING THE RESULTS. I SAW ONLINE THAT THERE ARE KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM. *TR

Summary

APPROACHING A RED LIGHT ON A DRY SUNNY DAY, MY BRAKES FAILED HALFWAY THROUGH COMING TO A STOP. AT FIRST MY VEHICLE (2011 MAZDA CX-9 SPORT WITH 56,000 MILES) WAS SLOWING DOWN NORMALLY AND THEN SUDDENLY THERE WAS GRINDING/CRUNCHING NOISES AND DESPITE PRESSING THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER STOPPING. I SLAMMED THE BRAKES, PUMPED A FEW TIMES, AND THE VEHICLE SIMPLY FAILED TO SLOW DOWN OR STOP CAUSING ME TO SLAM INTO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I TOOK THE CAR INTO A MECHANIC WHO NOTIFIED ME THAT BOTH OF MY "FRONT CALIPERS WERE POSSIBLY DEFECTIVE," AND MY FRONT ROTORS WERE "UNEVEN AND WEARING ON THE OUTSIDE." HOWEVER, MY BRAKE PADS WERE GOOD AND DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. GOOD THING I WAS ALREADY STOPPING FOR THE RED LIGHT; THEREFORE I ESTIMATE GOING ABOUT 10-15 MPH (SPEED LIMIT ON STREET WAS 35 AND I WAS ALREADY MIDWAY THROUGH COMING TO A STOP AT THE LIGHT). IMAGINE IF I NEED TO BRAKE WHILE GOING 60-70 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE! OR WORSE, DRIVING IN THE RAIN! *TR

Summary

I HAD MY CX-9 GT DRIVING ON THE ROAD. THIS HAPPENED WHILE I DROVE ON STREET AND STEPPED ON BRAKE THE PEDAL TO STOP FOR A RED LIGHT. I ALMOST HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, BECAUSE MY BRAKE AT THIS TIME, ALL OF SUDDEN, TOOK LONGER STOPPING DISTANCE AS I EXPECTED. IT WAS A CLOSE CALL TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME WHILE MY BRAKING SYSTEM REACTED DIFFERENTLY. AFTER ALMOST HITTING THE CAR, I DROVE VERY CAUTIOUSLY IN A FEAR THAT I MIGHT LOSE THE CONTROL OF MY BRAKES TOTALLY; THE BAD FEELING FOR THE UNPREDICTABLE BRAKING SYSTEM REALLY PUT MY FAMILY'S SAFETY IN A COMPROMISE. I HAVE ONLY HAD THIS CAR FOR ONE AND HALF YEAR AND DROVE AROUND 24,000 MILES. THIS NEVER HAPPENED TO THE THREE CARS I HAVE DROVE IN MY 20 YEARS OF DRIVING HISTORY. THE BRAKING SYSTEM SHOULD BE DESIGNED AND PROVIDE WHAT IT SHOULD PERFORM WITHOUT ANY COMPROMISE. BUT THIS ONE DIDN'T DO THE JOB IT SHOULD. DON'T EVEN SEE ANY WARNING LIGHT IN THE DASH. TODAY, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE MAZDA SERVICE. THEY RESPONDED THAT ONE OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE. THEY MENTIONED THAT THE "BRAKE BOOSTER" IS BROKEN. I AM SO SURPRISED AT HOW THESE INSTRUMENTAL SYSTEMS EASILY BREAK IN JUST LESS THAN TWO YEARS, WITHOUT ANY WARNING?? WOULD THIS BE A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT WOULD AFFECT ANY CX-9 MODELS AND CAUSE FURTHER LIFE THREATENING RESULTS. I LIKE TO POP UP THIS CONCERN TO THE SAFETY AUTHORITY FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS.
