The contact owns a 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V279000 (Structure, Suspension) however, the contact was unable to schedule the recall repair because she was unable to get a response from the dealer. The contact stated while driving 45-50 MPH, she heard an abnormally loud sound coming from underneath the vehicle. The automatic braking system warning light is illuminated. The contact stated that the driver’s side front wheel was facing sideways. The contact stated the vehicle was towed out of the highway. Then, the vehicle was towed to the independent mechanic who diagnosed that the lower control arm was severely corroded and had fractured. The manufacturer and the dealer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 43,000.
I purchased the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander in 2015. In January 2018 the engine seized up while driving and was not repairable. Thankfully I was able to pull over and no one was hurt. The vehicle was only 7 years old with only 112,846 miles and I still had a loan on the vehicle for approxiamtly $10,000. The vehicle was at the time worth the cost left to pay it off. I consulted many Mitsubishi dealerships around the country and the only fix as a new engine for the vehicle which was an additional $10,000 and there were no engines anywhere in the country that could be found. The reason is that Mitsubishi decommissioned this Outlander model in 2013 due to the issue with the engine - essentially it was built like a snowmobile engine. The belt snapped and there was no repairing it - only replacing the entire engine. Mitsubishi knew this was an issue with this model - they decommissioned it only after 2 years on the market and they didn't issue a recall until 2018 - 5 years later! In the mean time I had found others around the coutnry with the same issue and we were all left with auto loans and no working vehicle. This is extremely poor business tactics and dishonest and very unsafe. I was lucky I was not driving on a freeway at the time when the engine seized up and the vehicle bucked like wild horse - it could have resulted in a major accident. It is dishonest to issue a recall 5 years after the company knew the vehicle had an issue and most likely all of the models had been sold or abandoned by this time so they don't have to pay for many repairs since there are not many that have lasted until 2018 to be repaired. A complaint has also been filed with the Minnesota State Attorney General. I was stuck with the $10,000 loan on a car that was now worth $0 and Mitsubishi at that time acted they had no idea what was wrong with it or why this happened. All lies.
HARPSWELL AUTO ILLEGALLY SOLD ME A VEHICLE WITH 5 SAFELY RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE BEFORE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. SAFETY RECALL CODES ARE C1611Z, C1614Z, C1801R, C1806Z, C2003R. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE 4/25/2020 AND 2 RECALLS WERE DUE IN 2016 AND 3 WERE DUE IN 2019. WHERE THESE ARE VERY BIG SAFETY RECALLS I THINK HARPSWELL AUTO NEEDS TO HAVE THEIR LICENSE REVOKE FOR SERVICE AND INSPECTION STICKERS BECAUSE MY VEHICLE SHOULD NEVER HAVE PASSED INSPECTION WITH THE CROSSMEMBER RECALL COMPLETELY ROTTED OUT.
PAINT CHIPPING. PAINT LIFTING ON HOOD AND ROOF OF CAR. CAR DRIVEN UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES. CALL WAS BROUGHT BACK TO WANTAGH MITSUBISHI SALES AND SERVICE WHERE CAR WAS PURCHASED IN WANTAGH NEW YORK. FILED COMPLAINT AND REPORTED ISSUE WHEN ORIGINALLY HAPPENED.
VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND SMELLED OF GAS. TOOK TO MECHANIC WHO PROVIDED EVIDENCE THAT THE FUEL TANK IS LEAKING FUEL. THE MECHANIC PROVIDED PICTURES OF THE TANK WHICH LOOKS TO HAVE ABNORMAL DAMAGE. DOES NOT SEEM THAT TANKS WOULD LEAK IN THE EVIDENCED MANNER. CONTACTED BOTH MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP AND MITSUBISHI MANUFACTURER WHO COULD NOT PROVIDE REPLACEMENT TANK IN TIMELY MANNER AND WERE NOT WILLING TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY ISSUE RAISED REGARDING THE STATUS OF THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN FAR AT ALL DUE TO THE PANDEMIC AND THERE HAS NOT BEEN A REASON TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT DAMAGE TO THE FUEL TANK FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE DRIVER/OWNER.

I WAS DRIVING ON I 75, ME, 2 PASSENGERS AND 7 ANIMALS DEEP. WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE MY ACCELERATION STOPPED AND THE RPMS REVED, THE CAR STARTED TO SLOW DOWN, I WASN'T ABLE TO ACCELERATE ANYMORE. I COSTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WE WERE STUCK.! MY CVT TRANSMISSION IS BAD.
THIS MODEL VEHICLE HAS A BAD DESIGN FLAW THAT MITSUBISHI REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE. THE LOCATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONER DISCHARGE CAUSES WATER TO DRIP DIRECTLY ONTO THE SUB FRAME BELOW. THIS DRIPPING CORRODED A HOLE THROUGH MY SUB FRAME DEEMING IT STRUCTURALLY UNSOUND AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND CAUSED IT FAILED MY STATE INSPECTION. MY LOCAL DEALER AND MITSUBISHI BOTH REFUSED TO COVER THE COST OF REPLACING THE PART SINCE NO RECALL CURRENTLY EXISTS. I ENDED UP GETTING A USED PART FROM A LOCAL SHOP FOR HALF THE COST OF WHAT THE DEALER QUOTED ME. I ALSO HAD THE MECHANIC JURY RIG AN AC DISCHARGE TUBE EXTENSION TO DIRECT THE WATER AWAY FROM THE SUB FRAME SO IT WOULDN'T KEEP HAPPENING. HAD MY STATE INSPECTOR NOT CAUGHT THIS CORROSION, I WOULD BE STILL DRIVING THE UNSAFE VEHICLE. A COMPROMISED SUB FRAME COULD RESULT IN NUMEROUS FAILURES THAT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I WAS LUCKY IT DID NOT GET TO THAT POINT. IT IS CLEAR THE CORROSION IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE AC DISCHARGE, RATHER THAN NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THE REST OF THE SUB FRAME AND SUSPENSION THROUGH OUT THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE ANYWHERE NEAR THE LEVEL OR CORROSION THAT IS DIRECTLY BELOW THE AC DISCHARGE TUBE. GOOGLE SEARCHING THIS PROBLEM MAKES IT CLEAR I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE. THERE ARE OTHER MODELS OF OUTLANDERS AND OUTLANDER SPORTS THAT SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED SO A RECALL CAN BE ISSUED FOR ALL MODELS WITH THIS DESIGN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE CONTACT HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO JERRY'S MITSUBISHI (443-219-9464, LOCATED AT 1906 E JOPPA ROAD, PARKVILLE, MD 21234) WHERE IT WAS STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE BEARING INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION WAS ABOUT TO FRACTURE, WHICH CAUSED THE NOISE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A KNOWN ISSUE. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO NHTSA. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED AND THAT THE CONTACT WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 69,000.
I KNOW THIS CAR HAS FOUR RECALLS ON IT. BUT I'M HAVING ISSUES WITH WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE BEEN GOOGLING SLOW OR SLUGGISH ACCELERATION ISSUES AND OTHER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THEN I CAME ACROSS A RECALL FOR THE OUTLANDER SPORT INVOLVING THE CVT IN NEWER MODELS. I DON'T KNOW IF THOSE CVT ISSUES ARE THE SAME ONES MY CAR IS HAVING. BUT IS BECOMING A PAIN IN THE BUTT TO TRY AND ACCELERATE FAST ENOUGH ON THE ROAD OR THE HIGHWAY TO GET OUT OF PEOPLES WAY OR TO MOVE JUST NOTICING PEOPLE GOING AROUND ME BECAUSE OF MY SLUGGISH ACCELERATION. I HAVE TO PRESS ON THE GAS PRETTY HARD TO EVEN GET UP TO ABOUT 20 OR 30 NOT TO MENTION WHAT SOUNDS LIKE MY MUFFLER IS HUMMING. I FEEL IT'S A DANGER TRYING TO ACCELERATE AND NOT GETTING UP TO THE SPEED TO MAKE A TURN OR GET ON THE HIGHWAY LIKE I SAID. I NOTICED THAT I HAVE TO PUT A SPECIFIC DATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS FORM BUT IT'S BEEN GOING ON FOR A WHILE NOW. I ACTUALLY WENT TO MITSUBISHI TO GET MY TRANSMISSION FLUID REPLACED AND THE GUY SAID THAT THIS ISSUE WILL GO AWAY BUT IT DIDN'T.
I NOTICED JUST RECENTLY WHEN I WAS ON A LONG DISTANCE ROAD TRIP THAT MY TRANSMISSION OVERHEATING LIGHT WAS COMING ON? I HAD TO PULL OVER A COUPLE TIMES AND LET IT COOL DOWN BEFORE I COULD CONTINUE... IT IS VERY DANGEROUS AND NO ONE AT MITSUBISHI OR OTHER SHOPS KNOWS WHATS WRONG? PLEASE HELP

WHEN BELIEVING I WAS CLEAR I BEGAN MY LEFT TURN WHEN A CAR CROSSED IN FRONT OF MINE AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE EXTERIOR RUBBER WINDOW MOLDINGS ARE CORRODED AND MELTED WHICH ALLOWS FOR THE WATER TO GET INTO THE DOOR DAMAGING THE ELECTRICAL WIRING FOR THE WINDOWS AUTOMATIC OPERATION. MY VEHICLE ISN'T THE ONLY VEHICLE WITH THIS PROBLEM AS I HAVE SEEN THAT MOST OF THESE CARS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE TRIED TO CONTACT MITSUBISHI TO TELL THEM ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT IN PUERTO RICO THEY TOLD ME THIS PROBLEM WAS BECAUSE I WASN'T USING WAX ON THEM, I HAVE SEEN MUCH OLDER CARS, AND THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT EXIST. IT EXISTS BECAUSE OF THE POOR QUALITY OF EXTERIOR WINDOW SILL MOLDING THEY CHOSE TO INCLUDE IN THIS CAR BECAUSE, ONCE AGAIN, IT'S NOT JUST MINES, IT'S MOST OF THEM

PROBLEM EXISTED IN ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM. UNDER LOW SPEED, 5 TO 10 MPH OR LESS, ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM STOPPED WORKING OCCASIONALLY (USUALLY AFTER A FULL TURNING OF STEERING WHEEL TO THE LIMIT). WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS, NO POWER ASSIST FUNCTIONALITY FUNCTIONING, SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES STEERING EFFORTS, THUS INCREASES VEHICLE CRASHING POSSIBILITIES SIGNIFICANTLY. MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN ONLY DRIVEN FOR LESS THAN 4 YEARS. A SELF CHECK ON THE STEERING SYSTEM SHOWED WITH NO LEAKING STEERING FLUID AND COMPLETELY CLEAN STEERING FLUID WHEN THE INCIDENTS HAPPENED. THUS I HAVE REASON TO BELIEVE THIS IS DUE TO A DEFECT PART IN THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM OF MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER SPORT. *TR

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR 1.5 MONTHS AND COUNTING FOR A LOCAL MITSUBISHI DEALER TO REPLACE MY DRIVE BELT PER INSTRUCTIONS IN THE "IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL" NOTICE. I HAVE CALLED EVERY LOCAL DEALER WITH THE PROMISE OF RETURNING MY CALL WHEN THEY RECEIVE THE PARTS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS AND THE NHTSA CONSIDER TO BE "PROMPT" CONSIDERING THESE ARE SAFETY RISKS THAT PUT MYSELF, MY FAMILY, AND OTHERS AT RISK ON A DAILY BASIS UNTIL THE PART IS REPAIRED. IS IT 45 DAYS? 180 DAYS? THIS IS RIDICULOUS THAT I HAVE TO SIT AND WAIT, DRIVING MY POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CAR EVERY DAY, WHEN THERE IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND A KNOWN SOLUTION. WHEN ISSUING A RECALL, I WOULD EXPECT THAT THE MANUFACTURER AND NHTSA WOULD BE ADEQUATELY PREPARED TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY ISSUE TIMELY RATHER THAN ALLOWING THIS ISSUE TO CREATE EXTRA RISK. PLEASE ADVISE ON HOW TO PROCEED AND PROVIDE MORE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS RATHER THAN BROAD TERMINOLOGY LIKE "PROMPT". *JS
I WENT ON VACATION FOR SEVEN DAYS AND WHEN I RETURNED I STARTED THE VEHICLE TO MAKE SURE IT WOULD AND IT STARTED JUST FINE. THE NEXT MORNING AS I WAS GETTING READY TO LEAVE FOR WORK, THE VEHICLE STALLED. I CONTACTED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND IT WAS NOT THE BATTERY. I THEN TOWED THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THEY STATED THE ENGINE MAY BE DONE FOR BECAUSE THE COMPRESSION LEVELS WERE READING VERY LOW AND THE HIGHEST READING WAS A 41 OF THE FOUR CYLINDERS. THEY SUGGESTED ITS EITHER THE TIMING BELT OR THE ENGINE AND THAT THE TIMING BELT SHOULD NOT HAVE GONE BAD WITH ONLY 60, 489 MILES. I CONTACTED MITSUBISHI AND LEARNED I WAS OVER THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTY BY 489 MILES. I'M LOST FOR WORDS AND DO NOT WHETHER TO GO FORWARD AND GET IT FIXED OR IF THERE'S ANY OTHER OPTIONS FOR ME.I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW MY TIMING BELT COULD HAVE WENT OUT WHILE SITTING IN MY PARKING LOT WHEREAS MOST BREAK WHILE DRIVING. I'VE ALREADY HAD MY DRIVE BELT REPLACED DUE TO RECALL. *TR
