I had been having problems with my seatbelt alarm coming on for a while with nothing in the seat of the passenger and then as I was trying to turn in to park I heard a click from my steering wheel as if it didn’t want to turn and the driver seat restraint malfunction error popped up . Now my horn will not work as well . I’m told that the dealership is the only place it can be repaired. I’m worried that it will deploy on me while driving . I’m sure this is an issue others have experienced as well .
The contact owns a 2012 BMW 528i. The contact stated while at a standstill the vehicle stalled randomly. The contact stated that drive train failure warning message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and was awaiting diagnostic testing. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V627000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that they were unable to assist. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. The VIN was not available.
EARLY 528I, F10 MODELS HAVE FACTORY SOFTWARE GLITCH THAT IMPROPERLY SET FRONT BRAKE MILEAGE TO AN ERRONEOUS 3100 MILES WHEN RESET AFTER FRONT BRAKE REPLACEMENT. BMW DOES NOT TAKE OWNERSHIP OF SOFTWARE ISSUE AND PLACES SOFTWARE UPGRADE COST ON CUSTOMER THROUGH DEALERSHIP. ISSUE DOES NOT ARISE UNTIL AFTER WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. CUSTOMERS THAT REFUSE TO PAY FOR COST OF BMW SOFTWARE MALFUNCTION CONTINUOUSLY HIT THE RESET OPTION FOR FRONT BRAKES WHICH CONSISTENTLY RESET TO AN ERRONEOUS MILEAGE OF 3100 MILES. THIS CONTINUOUS ERRONEOUS RESET APPROACH DOES NOT ALLOW FOR PROPER BRAKE WEAR ASSESSMENT BASED ON MILEAGE AND LEADS TO LOSS OF AWARENESS ON FRONT BRAKE PADS REPLACEMENT WHICH CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS DUE TO LOSS OF FRONT BRAKES. MY WIFE KEPT HITTING THE RESET OPTION TO REMOVE THE ERRONEOUS ALARM SO OFTEN THAT SHE ACTUALLY WAS DRIVING WITH EXTREMELY LOW PADS AND ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS IS NOT SAFE AND BMW SHOULD COVER FACTORY SOFTWARE UPGRADE SINCE CUSTOMERS DO NOT HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO ALTER OR UPGRADE SOFTWARE ON THE VEHICLES.
THE VEHICLE LOST POWER, WHILE IN MOTION, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AFTER ACCELERATING. THE CAR GAVE AN ERROR CODE OF DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION. MY CAR LOST POWER IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY CITY STREET, AND IT COULD HAVE EASILY LED TO A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. I WAS DRIVING ON THE ROAD AND I ACCELERATED A LIL BIT FASTER TO BEAT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT AND THEN MY CAR LOSS POWER AND STALLED OUT AND I GOT STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BRIDGE AND I WAS CAUSING TRAFFIC THE POWER TRAIN MALFUNCTION AND THE FUEL SUPPLY LIGHT CAM ON AND THE CHARGE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON I TRY STARTING IT BUT IT WOULDN'T START AND THE FUEL SUPPLY LIGHT KEPT COMING ON AND SOME WIRING PROBLEM WAS GOING ON WHEN TRYING TO START IT MY TV SCREEN WOULD TURN ORANGE AND THE SPEEDOMETER WHERE THE MPH/GAS/TEMPERATURE/AND RPM WOULD TWITCH LIKE SOME ELECTRICAL PROBLEM
I WAS GOING ABOUT 40 MPH WHEN I HEARD LIKE A POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR, AS SOON AS I HEARD THE NOISE MY CAR LOST ALL ITS POWER, ABOUT 2 MINUTES AFTER I NOTICED MY CAR WAS LEAVING A CLOUD OF WHITE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST.

WAS DRIVING DOING 30 MPH ON A NO TRAFFIC CITY STREET..AND THE CAR STARTED SHAKING THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. PUT THE SCANNER AND CODE P0087 IS WHAT IT READ
MY CAR WAS HAVING A WHINING NOISE AND DURING THE DIAGNOSIS IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PLASTIC GUIDES WITHIN THE ENGINE BLOCK THAT KEEP THE TIMING CHAIN INTACT IS BAD. THE TECHNICIAN ALSO FOUND THAT THE GUIBO (AKA UNIVERSAL JOINT) WAS CRACKED. FROM MY RESEARCH ON THE MATTER, I READ THAT NHTSA HAD ISSUED A LETTER PERTAINING TO OTHER MAKE AND MODEL ON FAULTY OR POORLY DESIGNED GUIBO. I PRESUME THAT THE AFFECTED MODELS BE INVESTIGATED AND COVERAGE BE EXTENDED TO OTHER LINES OF BMW. WHEN DRIVING THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY, A DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION WARNING WOULD APPEAR FREQUENTLY ON THE DISPLAY PANEL. I TOOK THE CAR TO VALLEY BMW IN MODESTO, CA, ON NOVEMBER 2018. AFTER ON EXTENSIVE DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION, THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE ONLY SUGGESTION WAS TO REPLACE THE CAR'S BATTERY. I TOOK THE CAR TO BATTERIES PLUS BULBS FOR A SECOND OPINION. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE BATTERY WAS STILL IN GOOD CONDITION AND DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION CONTINUED TO APPEAR WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. IN A SUBSEQUENT VISIT TO THE DEALER, I AGAIN MENTIONED THE ISSUE WITH THE DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION WARNING STILL APEARING ON THE DISPLAY PANEL. OUR CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENTS, SAID THEY COULDNT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR,THEREFOR, THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. ON A TRIP TO SAN FRANCISCO, WE EXPERIENCED A MAJOR ENGINE BREAK DOWN. THE CAR HAD COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. FORTUNATLY,WE HAD JUST EXITED THE HIGHWAY. WE THEN HAD THE CAR TOWED TO PETTER PAN BMW DEALERSHIP AND THEY CONCLUDED THAT INDEED THE ENGINE HAD EXPERIENCED A MAJOR BREAKDOWN, IN THEIR EVALUATION, THEY ALSO NOTED THE BATTERY WAS IN GOOD CONDITION. THIS COMPLETELY CONTRADICTS THE CLAIM BY VALLEY BMW THAT THE BATTERY WAS THE ISSUE. SINCE THEN, I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST BMW FOR A DEFECTIVE N20 ENGINE WHICH IS THE ENGINE IN MY CAR. I ALSO WENT AS FAR AS CONTACTING THE CEO OF BMW NORTHAMERICA REGANDING THIS DEFFECTIVE MOTOR. AS EXPECT BMW REFUSED TO ACCEPT ANY RESPONSABILITY FOR THE DEFFECTIVE ENGINE. ONCE I BROUGHT UP THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT, BMW CUT OFF ALL COMMUNICATIONS WITH ME. MY FAMILY AND I ARE ASKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN INVESTIGATING BMW ON THIS DEFFECTIVE MOTOR AND HOLDING THEN ACCOUNTABLE FOR SUCH POOR AND NEGLIGENT BEHAVIOR, PLEASE HELP ALL AFFECTED CUSTOMERS WITH THIS TERRIBLE AND DEVESTATING SITUATION.
MY 2012 BMW 528I STALLED TWICE 2 WKS AGO WHEN I WAS SLOWING DOWN AT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL. THE DISPLAY SHOWED EITHER "DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION" OR "TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION". I TOOK THE CAR TO AN AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER (ASC) FOR VERIFICATION AND WAS DIRECTED TO COME BACK IN FEW DAYS; WITHIN THAT WEEK IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I WENT TO ANOTHER ASC TO HAVE IT FULLY DIAGNOSED. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT FAULTY GUIDES IN THE TIMING-CHAIN CAUSED IT. I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS DESIGN FLAW UNTIL I READ ABOUT IT IN ONLINE. THE SERVICE MANAGER ALSO SAID THEY HAVE SEEN IT HAPPEN IN MANY CARS AND SOMETIMES UNDER 30K MILES AND IN FEW INSTANCES NEEDING ENTIRE ENGINE REPLACEMENT FOR $15000. I SEE SEVERAL CUSTOMERS WITH N20 AND N26 ENGINES HAVING THIS ISSUE SAME AS WITH N63 ENGINES. I CONTACTED BMWUSA AND LODGED A COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS FOR REIMBURSEMENT REFERRING TO NHTSA TSB 110614, BUT WAS DENIED. I WAS TOLD BMW KNEW OF THIS ISSUE AND EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 7Y/70K. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS AND MYGARAGE ON BMWUSA IS NOT SHOWING IT. I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL MARKETING INFO ON NEW BMW AND LEASES INSTEAD. SIX MONTHS I STARTED HEARING A HIGH PITCH NOISE AND IT ONLY GOT WORSE OVER THE FEW MONTHS. TWO WEEKS AGO (01/10/2020 AND 01/17/2020), IN THE NIGHT AROUND 8PM, MY BMW 528I CAR STALLED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT IN CULVER CITY, CALIFIRNIA. IT FLASHED AN ERROR MESSAGE ON THE DISPLAY VERY BRIEFLY AND IT APPEARED TO BE "DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION". STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, MY FIRST REACTION WAS TO TURN ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS AND HOPE NOBODY HITS ME FROM THE BACK, AS I WAS NOT ABLE TO DRIVE FORWARD. BEFORE I COULD TAKE MY PHONE OUT AND TAKE A PICTURE OF THE SCREEN, THE ERROR SCREEN VANISHED. I PRESUMED THE "ERROR" WOULD BE SAVED IN THE SYSTEM AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF, RESTARTED AND STARTED TO DRIVE AND PROCEED. AT BOTH THESE TIMES THERE WERE CARS BEHIND ME AND I TURNED ON THE HAZARD LIGHT TO WARN THE OTHER DRIVERS OF MY INABILITY TO DRIVE. I TOOK THE CAR TO TWO BMW SERVICE CENTERS. ONE OF THE SERVICE MANAGERS SAID HE CANNOT SAY WHAT THE ISSUE IS WITHOUT DOING A DIAGNOSIS, BUT THE PROBABLE CAUSE IS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THA OIL-PUMP OR THE CAM-SHAFTS AND RELATED TO TIMING. I TOOK THE CAR TO ANOTHER SERVICE CENTER AND HERE I LEFT THE CAR BEHIND FOR A SPECIFIC DIAGNOSIS. I WAS TOLD THE ISSUE IS RELATED TO TIMING CHAIN AND PLASTIC PARTS THAT HOLD THE CHAIN IN PLACE, DETERIORATE OVER TIME. I WAS TOLD THAT IT IS A COMMON ISSUE AND IT IS MY LUCK THAT THE TIMING CHAIN DID NOT RIP APART AND CAUSE AN ENGINE SEIZURE, WHICH WOULD HAVE COST ME $15000 IN REPAIRS THAN WHAT I WAS BILLED AROUND $6000. INCIDENTALLY, FEW MONTHS AGO THERE WERE OTHER PLASTIC PARTS THAT HOLD THE ENGINE IN PLACE ALSO DETERIORATE AND IT WAS SHAKING THE CAR. I HAD REPLACED THEM AT A CERTIFIED MECHANIC. THIS HAD COSTED ME ANOTHER $2000 PLUS IN REPAIRS. I HAVE MAINTAINED THE CAR IN GOOD CONDITION AND NEVER MISSED ANY SERVICE APPOINTMENTS. I HAVE BILLS OF ALL THE SERVICES PERFORMED ON THE CAR.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE 95 HIGHWAY MY CAR SHOWED A FUEL SUPPLY ERROR THEN POWERED DOWN AND STOPED AND WOULDN'T RESTART. I HAD IT TOWED TO A HOTEL AND THE FOLLOWING MORNING IT STARTED WHILE THE TOW TRUCK LOADED IT TO TAKE TO THE DEALER. I HAD A FULL TANK OF GAS AT THE TIME. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED WITH MY KIDS. TOWED IT TO BMW AND ALL THEY TOLD ME WAS TO REPLACE MY BATTERY EVEN THOUGH I HAD A PERFECTLY GOOD BATTERY AND THE AND EVERYTHING REQUIRING A BATTERY WORKED LIKE RADIO, LIGHTS ETC. I BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY FROM THEM AND THE TECH DROVE THE CAR FOR 30 MILES. WITHIN 2 HOURS AFTER LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP MY CAR DID THE SAME THING WHILE EXITING THE HIGHWAY AND SLOWING DOWN AT A STOP LIGHT. A DIAGRAM FLASHES ON THE CONSOLE AND THEN A MESSAGE ABOUT THE FUEL SUPPLY. I WAS ASSISTED BY CALLING 911 TO GET MY KIDS AND I TO SAFETY AND MY CAR OUT THE WAY. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE FUEL MODULE OR PUMP FOR MY YEAR AND MAKE BUT BMW CLAIMS MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED. THIS IS DANGEROUS, PEOPLE CAN GET KILLED IF THE CARS ARE STALLING WHILE IN MOTION.

I DROVE APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES / 13 MILES TO MY DESTINATION BEFORE THE "DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION" INDICATOR LIGHT ALERTED ME. LUCKILY, I WAS NEAR A DRIVEWAY TO PULL OFF INTO A PARKING LOT WHEN THE WARNING LIGHT APPEARED. AS SOON AS THE WARNING LIGHT APPEARED MY CAR IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO IDLE ROUGHLY, AND MY ENGINE WAS NOT RUNNING AT FULL CAPACITY. I WAS ONLY ABLE TO PULL INTO A PARKING STALL AND MOMENTS FOLLOWING THE "DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION" ALERT, AN OIL LIGHT ALSO ALERTED ME ON MY DASH. MY CAR IS UP TO DATE ON ALL REQUIRED SERVICES. I HAVE SERVICED MY VEHICLE AT MY LOCAL BMW DEALERSHIP. AT ALL SERVICE APPOINTMENTS I REQUESTED CURRENT BULLETINS. MY VEHICLE HAD NO KNOWN PROBLEMS, OR WARNING INDICATORS OR ALERTS THAT I WAS MADE AWARE OF. WHEN I SAFELY PULLED OFF THE ROAD INTO A PARKING LOT MY CAR SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY, WOULD NOT RESTART, AND LOCKED UP. I WAS NOT ABLE TO PUT MY CAR IN NEUTRAL. MY VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP WHERE THE DEALERSHIP INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND ALERTS. THE DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE AND SAID THAT THE TIMING AND OIL PUMP CHAIN MALFUNCTIONED AND THE TOTAL COST ESTIMATE WOULD BE 13,651 + TAX. AFTER RESEARCHING SEVERAL ONLINE BULLETINS, BMW FORUMS AND NEWS ARTICLES, THE "DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION" HAS BEEN AN ISSUE WITH OTHER BMW CUSTOMERS, AND BMW NORTH AMERICA ISWAS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND HAZARD. EXPERIENCING THIS MALFUNCTION COULD HAVE POSED A RISK TO MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF MY PASSENGER SINCE THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND LOCKED UP.

I PURCHASED MY BMW 528 XI DRIVE CPO IN JANUARY 2015. IN AUGUST 2018 MY ENGINE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON IN THE CAR AND THEN THE DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION LIGHT.I TRIED TO RUN A SELF DIAGNOSTIC ON THE CAR AS THIS IS A FEATURE BUILT IN AND THE ENGINE OIL CHECK WOULD ONLY GO UP TO 15% AND CUT OFF. I TOOK IT INTO BMW OF BLOOMFIELD FOR SERVICE MENTIONING THIS TO THEM. THEY CHANGED THE OIL AND CLEARED THE CODES GOT THE CAR BACK. FAST FORWARD TO JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO, I AM DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE AND DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION LIGHT COME ON AND THE CAR STOPS ON ME. I COULD HAVE GOTTEN KILLED. I HAD IT TOWED TO BMW AND THEY CHECK IT AND SAY THAT THE ENGINE IS GONE DUE TO LOW PRESSURE AND REPAIRS ARE 20,000 PLUS. REMIND YOU I BARELY DRIVE THE CAR AS I WORK IN NY AND TAKE THE BUS . I ONLY DRIVE THE CAR ON EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS. I CONTACTED THE CORPORATE BMW OF NA OFFFICE AND THEY ACT LIKE THEY DON'T CARE. ADVISED ME TO TALK TO THE SERVICE MANAGER TO SEE WHAT COULD BE DONE. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS ISSUES AND SPECIALLY NOT THIS BIG WHERE I WOULD ENDANGER MY FAMILY WHEN THE CAR WOULD DIE WHILE DRIVING. I NOW HAVE MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT BMW. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A CERTIFIED BMW REPAIR SHOP GLOBAL IMPORTS. THE BMW SERVICE CENTER CONFIRMED THE FAILURE WAS THE DRIVE CHAIN CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SEIZE AND NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. AS I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE I FOUND THOUSANDS OF SIMILAR INTERNET STORIES ELABORATING ON THE DESIGN FLAWS IN THE ENGINE THAT USES PLASTIC FLYWHEELS FOR THE DRIVE CHAIN/OIL PUMP CHAIN. BMW EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR THIS ISSUE BEYOND THEIR NORMAL 4 YEAR 48,000 MILES TO 7 YEARS AND 70,000 MILES. I AM AT 76,000 MILES JUST OUT OF WARRANTY. IT IS ODD THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY YEARS BY 3 BUT ONLY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY MILES AN ADDITIONAL 22,000 MILES OR AN AVERAGE OF 7,333 MILES PER YEAR. WHO ONLY DRIVES 7,333 MILES A YEAR. BMW'S OTHER EXTENDED WARRANTIES USUALLY OFFER AN AVERAGE OF 12,000 MILES PER YEAR ON THE ADDITIONAL YEARS IT IS EXTENDED. THE OTHER EXTENDED WARRANTIES FOR THIS ENGINE WERE EXTENDED 10 YEARS AND 120,000 MILES. I WAS DILIGENT IN CHANGING THE OIL LONG BEFORE THE RECOMMENDED CHANGE INTERVALS ISSUED BY BMW. THERE IS NO REASON AN ENGINE WOULD SEIZE AT 76,000 MILES WHEN THE REGULAR MAINTENANCE WAS FOLLOWED UNLESS THERE WAS A MAJOR ENGINE DESIGN FLAW. BMW HAS ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGED THE ENGINE DESIGN ISSUES BY EXTENDING THE WARRANTY ON THE 'TIMING CHAIN AND OIL PUMP DRIVE CHAIN', 'ENGINE OIL FEEDLINE' TO THE TURBO CHARGER AND THE 'FUEL TANK LEAK DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (NVLD)'. WITH THIS BEING A KNOWN DESIGN FLAW AND THE NUMBER OF ISSUES THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS ENGINE SO THE FLY WHEELS CAN BE REPLACED WITH A BETTER PART OR AT VERY LEAST BMW SHOULD BE FORCED TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY AND MILES AS THEY DO WITH OTHER WARRANTY EXTENSIONS. THIS DESIGN FLAW CAUSED THE ENGINE TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS.

CURRENTLY, THE PAYOFF IS $13,895.32 TILL 11/25/18. THE MONTHLY PAYMENT IS $425.00 AND THE DATE OF MATURITY FOR THE LOAN IS 9/15/21. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE UNDER A PRE-OWNED CERTIFIED GUARANTEE, WHICH EXPIRED IN JULY. THE CAR WAS REGULARLY SERVICED AND I KEPT ALL OF MY PAPERWORK. THE CAR FRONT AND REAR TIRES WERE OF DIFFERENT SIZE AND I NOTICED WHEN I GOT THE CAR FROM DEALER NEXT DAY AS THE CAR WOULD DRIFT TOWARDS ONE SIDE. IT GAVE "DRIVETRAIN ERROR" SINCE ITS ALL WHEEL DRIVE WITH POWER NOT BEING EQUALLY DISTRIBUTED DUE TO DIFFERENT RPM ON FRONT AND REAR. THIS WASN'T THE CASE WHEN I TEST DROVE THE DAY BEFORE. I KEPT THINKING ITS A TRANSMISSION ISSUE BUT IT WAS TIRE THAT WAS CAUSING IT. AT HIGH SPEED (40-60MPH) WHEN I TAKE OFF FROM GAS THE CAR WOULD DRIFT TO ONE SIDE AND WOULD STALL. THIS IS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND COULD HAVE CAUSED NOT ONLY PASSENGER LIFE BUT ALSO MAJOR TRANSMISSION AND DRIVETRAIN BREAKDOWN. SO BEFORE FIXING IT LOCAL SHOP, I DID CALL THE CREVIER BMW IN SANTA ANA, CA AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THE FILTER HOUSING AND MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I TOLD THE BMW ADVISOR THAT I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT A 2012 BMW 528I WITH 52K MILES ON IT AND LEAKING OIL ALL OVER THE PLACE. THE BMW ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT I DROVE TOO MUCH. WHAT KIND OF SERVICE IS THAT? AND BMW WILL NOT COVER IT. SO BMW CANNOT BE DRIVEN OVER 50K MILES. I ALSO DID CALL BMW CORPORATE AND SOMEONE FROM BMW CORPORATE CALLED ME BACK THAT AND SAID NOTHING BMW CAN DO ABOUT THIS. NOW I FOUND OUT BECAUSE OF THE OIL LEAK, THE ALTERNATOR IS HAVING PROBLEM. I WANT TO REPORT THIS INCIDENT SO THAT BMW SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE TO SIMILAR CASES OF THEIR UNSAFE CARS. DRIVING IN THE HOV AT APPROXIMATELY 9PM WHEN AN ALERT MESSAGE "DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION, DRIVE MODERATELY" DISPLAYS. CAR ENGINE IMMEDIATELY CUTS OUT AND WE HAVE NO PROPULSION. WE ARE UNABLE TO MOVE TO A SAFE LOCATION AND WIND UP ON A NARROW SHOULDER OF THE LIE IN NY. POLICE COME AND CLOSE DOWN 2 LANES TO PREVENT COLLISION (EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS). WE WERE UNABLE TO START THE CAR OR SHIFT IT INTO NEUTRAL. CAR WAS TOWED. BMW NOTIFIES US THAT FUEL SENSORS MALFUNCTIONED RESULTING IN US RUNNING OUT OF GAS EVEN THOUGHT THE INDICATOR SHOWED WE HAD 1/2 TANK. HOWEVER BECAUSE WE WERE OVER THE 50,000 MILE WARRANTY WE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING. . BMW IS LOOKING FOR US TO PAY $3,100 TO HAVE THE FUEL SENSORS REPLACED. I RESEARCHED THIS AND FOUND THAT BMW HAD ISSUED A RECALL ON ITS 2011 5 SERIES SEDANS AND 2012 5 SERIES GT FOR A FUEL SENSOR MALFUNCTION THAT MIRRORS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO US. WE PURCHASED OUR BMW NOV 2011. WE STRONGLY BELIEVE THIS FUEL SENSOR DEFECT BOTH IN DESIGN AND FUNCTIONALITY IS THE REASON BEHIND WHAT HAPPENED TO US. PUT MY FAMILY AND 6 POLICE PATROL MEN IN HARMS WAY. NOTIFIED BMW THAT THEY NEED TO EXTEND THEIR RECALL TO OTHER 2012 5 SERIES SEDANS GIVEN OUR EXPERIENCE. FELT COMPELLED TO NOTIFY YOU AS THERE MAY BE OTHER DRIVERS WHO WILL BE PUT IN HARMS WAY IF THIS PROBLEM IS NOT RECONCILED ON ALL 2012 5 SERIES SEDANS. WE WERE LUCKY WE WERE NOT INJURED. MY CAR WAS PARKED DURING A HAIL STORM. DURING THE STORM, THE BACK WINDSHIELD SHATTERED INTO A THOUSAND PIECES. THANK GOD NO ONE WAS IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE HAIL STORM! IT WAS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THESE WINDSHIELDS ARE MADE OF SAFETY GLASS, THAT IS DESIGNED TO ABSORB ANY IMPACT, CRACK, AND STAY IN 1 PIECE. HOWEVER, QUITE THE OPPOSITE HAPPENED (I HAVE PICTURES), WHERE THE ENTIRE BACK GLASS BASICALLY EXPLODED AND GLASS PIECES WENT FLYING EVERYWHERE. THERE WERE EVEN PIECES OF GLASS ON THE FRONT FLOOR BOARD AND DASHBOARD. THIS MUST BE A DEFECT AND COULD HAVE BEEN A POTENTIAL LIFE THREATENING EVENT IF ANYONE HAPPENED TO BE IN THE VEHICLE DURING THIS STORM! *TR
I WAS DRIVING AT 30, AND HIT A POT-HOLE. ALL OF SUDDEN MY RARE PASSENGER DOOR POPPED OPENED. MY DASH BOARD STARTED LIGHTING, AND ALSO THE INTERIOR LIGHTS STARTED LIGHTING. TAKEN TO THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY AS WE CARRY OUR BABY OFTEN TIMES IN THE REAR SEAT (HE WAS NOT IN THE CAR WHEN INCIDENT HAPPENED), AND THEY SAID NOTHING WRONG, BUT SUGGESTED TO PUT CHILD LOCK. I SEE A SIMILAR COMPLAINT BY ANOTHER USER. *TR
WHILE DRIVING IN METRO DETROIT LAST NIGHT MY 2012 BMW 528I XDRIVE SUDDENLY FLASHED A "FUEL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" MESSAGE, LURCHED AND CAME TO A DEAD STOP JUST PAST THE INTERSECTION OF NOVI ROAD AND 10 MILE. I WAS TWO MILES FROM THE EXPRESSWAY AND MY WIFE AND CHILDREN WERE WITH ME IN THE CAR. HAD I MADE IT TO I-96 - JUST TWO MILES UP THE ROAD - AND THIS HAPPENED, WE VERY LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. POLICE WERE CALLED BECAUSE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. THE CAR WAS ELECTRONICALLY LOCKED. I COULD NOT PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL TO MOVE IT OUT OF THE ROADWAY. BMW SERVICE FINALLY MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TOWED 8 HOURS LATER BECAUSE FEW TOW TRUCKS LACKED THE EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO MOVE THE CAR WITHOUT DAMAGE. THERE IS NO MANUAL OVERRIDE TO ALLOW YOU TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, IT CAN ONLY BE ACCESSED BY A SERVICE TECH UNDERNEATH THE CAR. MY SERVICE ADVISOR WAS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A MAJOR HAZARD AND HUGE DESIGN FLAW. THERE IS NO MECHANICAL LINKAGE TO EITHER THE START/STOP BUTTON OR THE SHIFTER. IT'S ALL ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED. I SHUDDER TO THINK WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD THE CAR STALLED ON THE INTERSTATE. NOW I'M STUCK WITH A CAR I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING. *TR
THE CAR WAS LEASED NEW. A HEAVY 'CHEMICAL ' SMELL OCCURED WHENEVER THE VENTILATION SYSTEM WAS ACTIVATED. DRIVER SUFFERED HEADACHES AND SINUS PROBLEMS. AT 14 MONTHS INTO THE LEASE, DRIVER HAD AN AIR QUALITY TEST DONE ON INSIDE OF THE CAR. RESULTS CAME BACK WITH ELEVATED UNSAFE LEVELS OF BENZINE. OTHER PERSONS RIDING IN THE CAR EXPERIENCED VISION PROBLEMS. BENZINE IS A KNOWN CARCINOGEN AND SOMETHING WAS VERY, VERY WRONG WITH THIS CAR. BMW IS NOW IN POSSESSION OF THIS CAR. *TR
BMW 550XI, NORMAL DRIVING, TIRE PRESSURE INDICATOR CAME ON, CAR BECAME UNSTABLE. PARKED VEHICLE AND OBSERVED LARGE BUBBLE IN FRONT RIGHT TIRE SIDEWALL HAD SPLIT, CAUSING RAPID DEFLATION. NO ROAD HAZARDS WERE INVOLVED, MECHANIC STATES THAT THESE TIRES GET SIDEWALL BUBBLES ALL THE TIME. *TR
THREE TIRE BUBBLES, FIRST AT 11,000 MILES, TWO MORE AT 12,000. ORIGINAL TIRES ON BMW 535XI SPORT. "GOODYEAR EAGLE LS-2 RUNONFLAT" 245/40R19 BMW QUICKLY REPLACED FOUR TIRES WITH MICHELIN, AT PRORATED COST, SO THEY KNOW THE PROBLEM. TIRES MUST BE RECALLED FOR SAFETY!!!!!!!!! *TR
I RAN OVER A POT HOLE, ABOUT 4" DEEP, AND BOTH PASSENGER SIDE RIMS WERE BENT SO BAD THAT THEY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE TIRES ALSO HAD TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING MODULE. TOTAL COST OF REPAIR WAS $8,229 I PREVIOUSLY HAD A BMW 750IL 2008. I ALSO HIT A POT HOLE AT ABOUT 45 MPH AND THE FRONT RIM CRACKED AND BACK RIM BENT. BOTH THE RIMS AND TIRES HAD TO BE REPLACED AND COST OVER $3000. THE BMWS ARE JUST TO HEAVY FOR THE ALUMINUM RIMS THEY COME WITH. IN OVER 40 YEARS OF DRIVING I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH RIMS UNTIL I STARTED DRIVING BMWS, AND I HAVE HIT A NUMBER OF POT HOLES BEFORE. SOMEONE SHOULD MAKE BMWS COME EQUIPPED WITH STEEL RIMS. THEIR CHEAP RIMS ARE GOING TO GET SOMEONE KILLED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 BMW 550IX EQUIPPED WITH GOODYEAR EAGLE P245/40/R19. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH AN ALERT ON HIS DASHBOARD ILLUMINATED INSTRUCTING HIM THAT THE VEHICLE SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN MORE THAN 50 MILES AS THE TIRE WAS GOING FLAT. THIRTY MILES LATER THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AND THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE HAD DEVELOPED A BUBBLE ON THE SIDEWALL, WHICH CAUSED THE TIRE TO SHRED. THE VEHICLE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER OF THE VEHICLE WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE TIRES HAD NOT BEEN REPLACED. UPDATED 12/14/12 *BF THE CONSUMER REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WITH MICHELIN TIRES. THE CONSUMER STATED TWO OF THE ORIGINAL FOUR TIRES DEVELOPED BUBBLES ON THE SIDEWALL. ON TWO OCCASIONS, THE DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTIONED. THE VIDEO SCREEN FLASHED A MESSAGE INSTRUCTING THE CONSUMER TO RETURN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. IN THE PROCESS, THE VEHICLE LOST A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF POWER OUTPUT AND SHOOK VIOLENTLY WHEN DRIVEN OVER 30 MPH. UPDATED 07/09/13
I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 50 MPH. ALL OF A SUDDEN, WITHOUT ANY WARNING, I HEARD POP, AND NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT PASSENGER DOOR HAD POPPED LOOSE. IMMEDIATELY, WARNING LIGHTS AND THE INTERIOR LIGHTS CAME ON. THE PASSENGER DOOR WAS COMPLETELY CLOSED AND LOCKED WHEN I STARTED MY COMMUTE. I HAD DRIVEN ABOUT 8 MILES AT THE POINT WHEN THIS HAPPENED. ONCE I PULLED OVER, I NOTICED THAT THE DOOR WAS STILL LOCKED, BUT IT WAS CLEARLY AJAR. NOT SURE WHAT CAUSED THIS, BUT FEEL LIKE THIS IS COULD BE A POTENTIALLY SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
