The vehicle was repaired by an independent mechanic, who replaced the alternator. After receiving the recall notification, the vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer informed the contact that there was oil leaking into the alternator. However, the part to do the recall repair would not be available until mid-January of 2022. The dealer informed the contact that it was safe to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 97,085.
My vehicle (2012 Veracruz) is currently under Recall Campaign #197 for Hyundai. This INCOMPLETE recall has been in place since November 2020 with NO SOLUTION PROVIDED yet as of July 2021. I have owned this vehicle for six years, and have already had to replace the alternator TWICE (2015 & 2019) due to the very same issue with the oil leak on the alternator. I 2019, my Veracruz DIED in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD when the alternator suddenly went out. I was the EXACT SERIOUS SAFETY RISK indicated in this current Recall #197. I am now the mother of a newborn baby and two year old son. This is our primary family vehicle. We ARE UNABLE to rely on it as a safe and dependable vehicle for our family because of the OPEN and INCOMPLETE recall. The dealership has told me that I have to pay out of pocket for any diagnostic and repair at this point, even if tied to the recall. (I can apply later for reimbursement.) I want Hyundai to give a time expected for a solution to this recall IMMEDIATELY or I want Hyundai/dealership to pay for any diagnostic and repair services that may be related to this recall #197 and alternator issue. This is UNACCEPTABLE. I have contacted Hyundai Customer Care and been told that since my car is out of warranty, I must pay for any diagnostic and repair for alternator issues. Again, UNACCEPTABLE when I am receiving monthly notices from Hyundai that there is a clear alternator problem and safety concern. When is the solution to this recall going to be provided? When will this company accept liability for this issue?
In 2018 I had to replace my alternator as it failed while at a stop light. My dash warning lights illuminated so I pulled over to the curb and turned the vehicle off. I was not able to start the car back up and had to have it towed home. I noticed that there is evidence of oil leaking again… it is over the alternator as well as other parts under the hood. I also notice oil in my driveway where I park my car. I am concerned that the alternator will fail again as Hyundai still have no remedy for the issue.

The dealer had been notified about the recall; however, the contact was informed that the parts were not yet available. The manufacturer had been notified of the recall but the contact had not yet received a response.The contact recently took his vehicle to the same mechanic for a maintenance check and was informed that his cover gaskets were leaking oil yet again. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALER FOUND NO ISSUES AT THE TIME. THE CONTACT THEN RECEIVED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V705000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER THE FAILURE. THE DEALER EDMOND HYUNDAI WAS NOTIFIED AND ADVISED THAT PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REMEDY. THE CAR WILL NOT START. IGNITION SWITCH DOES NOT ACTIVATE. THIS HAPPENS MOSTLY AFTER SITTING OVER NIGHT AND ON LONG TRIPS. A FEW TIMES IT STARTED AFTER HAVING THE BATTERY CHARGED FROM ANOTHER CAR. SOMETIMES IT STARTS AFTER 10 MINUTES OF TRYING TO START IT. IT HAPPENED ROUTINELY ON A 2000 MILE ROAD TRIP. 3 HYUNDAI DEALERS COULD NOT FIND AN ANSWER. IT HAPPENED RARELY FOR 4 MONTHS UNTIL THE RETURN 2000 MILE ROAD TRIP.

DEALER SAID PROBLEM DID NOT EXIST AND INSTEAD TRIED TO CHARGE ME FOR MULTIPLE OTHER REPAIRS INCLUDING DAMAGE THEY DID TO VEHICLE WHILE PERFORMING INSPECTION. IF YOU PUT YOUR HAND ON THE BACK OF THE ALTERNATOR, YOUR HAND COMES OUT WITH OIL ON IT.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT REFERENCED THE FAILURE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V415000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,000.
I WAS MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN ONTO A 2 LANE DIVIDED HIGHWAY. AS I WAS TURNING I LOST STEERING POWER AND MY BRAKE LIGHT INDICATOR CAME ON. I WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO REGAIN STEERING AFTER CROSSING BOTH LANES OF ON COMING TRAFFIC. THE ALTERNATOR BELT WAS REPLACED. THE VERY NEXT DAY THE EXACT SAME THING OCCURRED EXCEPT THERE WAS A LOUD SQUEAL THAT HAPPENED FOLLOWING THE LOSS OF STEERING AND THE BATTERY LIGHT COMING ON.THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN TO LOSE STEERING WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I HAD ALSO EXPERIENCED THE ABS SENSOR, EMERGENCY BRAKE SENSOR, AND ESC SENSOR COMING ON. REPLACING THE ABS SENSOR ON BOTH SIDES CORRECTED THAT ISSUE.
THE BATTERY DON'T CHARGE UNLESS THE AIR CONDITIONER IS ON.
THE CAR IS STILL HAVING THE OIL LEAK ON TO THE ALTERNATOR LIKE THE RECALL STATED. THIS IS MY 3RD TIME REPLACING MY ALTERNATOR ON A BRAND NEW CAR I BOUGHT OFF THE LOT.
THE 2012 VERACRUZ WAS PURCHASED IN AUGUST 2015, FROM WALDORF HYUNDAI, WALDORF MARYLAND. DECEMBER OF 2015, THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE BATTERY UNDER WARRANTY. 2016, THE ALTERNATOR FAILED AND WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. 2017 THE SPARK PLUGS FAILED AND WAS REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. 2018 THE VALVE COVER GASKET FAILED AND THE DEALERSHIP (WALDORF HYUNDAI) REFUSE TO COVER THE REPAIR COST. UNDER PROTEST AND A COMPLAINT FILED WITH HYUNDAI CORPORATE JULY 2018, THE GASKET WAS REPAIRED. JANUARY 2019, THE SPARK PLUGS FAILED AND THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO COVER THE REPAIR. SECOND COMPLAINT FILED WITH HYUNDAI CORPORATE, AND CURRENTLY WE ARE DISPUTING IF HYUNDAI SHOULD COVER THE REPAIR COST. UPON PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE, THE DEALERSHIP NEVER DISCLOSED THE 2014 RECALL FOR THIS VEHICLE'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILURE. THE GASKET HAS FAILED AT LEAST TWICE SINCE I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE AND THE ALTERNATOR, SPARK PLUGS, AND BATTERY HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAS STALLED ON THE HIGHWAY EACH TIME HAVING TO BE TOWED TO WALDORF, HYUNDAI. THE VEHICLE IS A SAFETY HAZARD DUE TO SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, AND HAS PROVEN TO BE UNRELIABLE. HYUNDAI DOES NOT HAVE A SOLUTION TO THE RECALL ( 14V415000) IN 2014, AND THE VEHICLE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN SOLD. THE VEHICLE SERVICE RECORDS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE DEALERSHIP.
GLASS SUN ROOF WOULD NOT CLOSE AND STUCK IN OPEN POSITION. HYUNDAI DEALER'S REPORT IS THAT TRACKS ARE CRACKED OPEN DUE TO SUN DAMAGE. ALSO THAT VALVE COVERS ARE LEAKING ON TO THE ALTERNATER
THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THEN THE ENGINE AREA BEGAN SMOKING AND THEN A FIRE SPARKED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAD TO BE CALLED TO PUT THE FIRE OUT. THE CAR WAS AT A GAS STATION AND WAS NOT MOVING.

OVER THE PAST YEAR I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN MY LIGHT DIAL IS IN THE "ON" POSITION AND SIGNALING RIGHT WITH THE TURN SIGNAL STALK IN CITY CONDITIONS (5-30 MPH) MY HEADLIGHTS (AND DASH LIGHTS) WILL FLICKER OFF AND BACK ON. LIGHT DIAL IS AT END OF SIGNAL STALK AND I INITIALLY CONCLUDED I POSSIBLY TWIST THE STALK IN A SLIGHT NATURE WHEN DRIVING TO CAUSE THE ISSUE BUT LATER CONCLUDED THE DIAL IS EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO TOUCH. I OFTEN KEEP THE LIGHT DIAL IN "AUTO" AND USUALLY ONLY HAVE IT IN "ON" DURING RAIN CONDITIONS. SAFETY CONCERN IS RELEVANT TO NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE MOMENTARILY WHILE TURNING OR ONCOMING TRAFFIC THINKING I AM FLASHING MY LIGHTS TO SIGNAL THEM TO GO INSTEAD OF ME CAUSING US TO TURN AT THE SAME TIME. OVER THE PAST THREE TIMES DRIVING THIS WEEK, I HAVE WITNESSED MY LIGHTS TURNING ON FOR ABOUT A MINUTE AND THEN BACK OFF WHILE IN "AUTO" DRIVING IN BRIGHT SUNLIGHT AND NO SHADE (OCCURRED TWICE IN ONE DRIVE) AND NO SIGNAL STALK MANIPULATION. THIS EVENT CAUSED ME TO TAKE THE LIGHTS TO "OFF" WHICH ON MY NEXT EXCURSION CAUSE THEM TO FLICKER ON AND THEN OFF WHILE SIGNALING RIGHT IN CITY CONDITIONS.
ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE GOES FROM 11.7 TO 13.2 WITH NO CHANGE IN LOADS. CAN VISUALLY SEE OIL LEAK ON ALTERNATOR. LEAK WAS RECALLED IN 2014 WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CORRECTED NOW RE-OCCURRING
VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER WHILE DRIVING IN SUBDIVISION WAS UNABLE TO TURN STEERING WHEEL. TOOK TO REPAIR SHOP ADVISED THE ALTERNATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PAID TO HAVE REPLACED. NOTICED A RECALL ON THE VERACRUZ THAT WAS NEVER ADDRESSED. ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE THE RECALL STATED ALTERNATOR AND GASKET WOULD BE AFFECTED BUT HYUNDAI IS STATING IT IS ONLY FOR THE OIL AND GASKET NOT ALTERNATOR.
HEADLIGHTS TURNING ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING. APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH/STALK ON STEERING WHEEL. HAPPENS WHILE STOPPED, DRIVING ON STREETS AND HIGHWAYS. SEEMS TO OCCUR MORE OFTEN WHILE MAKING TURNS.
THIS IS REGARDING A RECALL TO MY 2012 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ. IN NOVEMBER 2014 I HAD THE FRONT VALVE COVER REPLACED UNDER A RECALL BECAUSE IT WAS LEAKING. IT RECENTLY STARTED LEAKING AGAIN. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON MY VEHICLE AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. I WRITING TO INFORM YOU THAT THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 63K MILES ON IT, ALL MAINTENANCE IS PERFORMED ON OR AHEAD OF SCHEDULE AND IS GARAGE KEPT. I PAID FOR THE REPAIR OUT OF POCKET AT A REPAIR SHOP OTHER THAN THE DEALER. THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE THAT SHOULD REOCCUR WITH 4 YEARS TO A VEHICLE THAT IS SO WELL MAINTAINED. THE INVOICES FOR BOTH REPAIRS ARE ATTACHED IN A PDF FILE. IF OTHER CUSTOMERS ARE REPORTING THIS ISSUE, I BELIEVE A SECOND RECALL NEEDS TO BE ISSUED. THANK YOU.

MID ISLAND HYUNDAI (1815 MIDDLE COUNTRY RD, CENTEREACH, NY 11720) REPLACED THE BATTERY IN THE VEHICLE, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED SIX MONTHS LATER. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT OIL WAS LEAKING ONTO THE ALTERNATOR. THE SEAL, ALTERNATOR, AND BATTERY WERE REPLACED IN THE VEHICLE, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED ONE YEAR LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HYUNDAI 112 (2114 NY-112 MEDFORD, NY 11763) WHERE THE SEAL, ALTERNATOR, AND BATTERY WERE REPLACED AGAIN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND WAS UNABLE TO ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,200.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ. WHILE DRIVING, SMOKE WAS SEEN UNDER THE HOOD. UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT OIL WAS LEAKING FROM THE ENGINE ONTO THE ALTERNATOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (HANLEES HYUNDAI IN FREMONT, CALIFORNIA), BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT YET DETERMINED. IN APRIL OF 2015, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V415000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING: ENGINE). APPROXIMATELY 2,000 MILES LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE FAILURE WAS REPAIRED. APPROXIMATELY 15,000 MILES LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 17,000.
THE FIX FOR RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V415000 FAILED IN LESS THAN TWO YEARS. THE HEAD GASKET LEAK APPARENTLY RETURNED AND CREATED AN ALTERNATOR FAILURE THAT LED TO A LOSS OF POWER AND ACCELERATION ON THE HIGHWAY AND EVENTUAL STALL OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT I INCURRED COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH A NEW BATTERY AND THE DEDUCTIBLE ON MY SERVICE CONTRACT. THE RESOLUTION OF THE RECALL NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED FOR FAILURE.
JULY 2014: EXPERIENCED SUDDEN PROGRESSIVE ELECTRICAL FAILURE WHILE DRIVING. DISCOVERED ALTERNATOR FOULED BY LEAKING OIL. VALVE COVER GASKET, ALTERNATOR REPLACED AT DEALERSHIP. REC'D NOTICE OF RECALL 121. JANUARY 2015: RECALL REPAIRS WERE APPLIED. JUNE 2016: PROBLEM RECURRED AS BEFORE. GASKET & ALTERNATOR AGAIN REPLACED. ALTHOUGH REPAIR/REPLACEMENT DONE, HYUNDAI REFUSES TO OFFER ANY OTHER REMEDY OR EXTEND WARRANTY.
OVER THE PAST MONTH OR SO, THIS VERACRUZ HAS SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING ACCELERATED AT TOP SPEED, AND I COULD NOT STOP IT WITH THE BRAKES. I HAD TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. THIS IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS-I DONT EVEN WANT TO DRIVE THE CAR. SOMEONE COULD EASILY GET INJURED OR WORSE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, THE BRAKE LIGHTS MALFUNCTIONED AND CAUSED THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER TO LOCK. THE BRAKE SWITCH WAS REPLACED TWICE, BUT THE ISSUE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AGAIN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,000.
WENT IN FOR A RECALL (CAMPAIGN 121) TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE REPAIR WAS DONE INCORRECTLY CAUSING MORE PROBLEMS. THE DEALERSHIP AGREED TO RE DUE JUST THE PROBLEM BUT FAILED TO CLEAN RESIDUA (OIL ALL OVER ENGINE AND PARTS) THIS CAUSED THE PARTS TO FAIL UPON DRIVING. FILED A COMPLAINT TO HYUNDAI AND HAD NO RESULTS ON PAYING FOR THE DAMAGES (REPAIRS). THE 1ST INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC. THE DRIVE BELT SHREDDED CAUSING VEHICLE TO STOP. THE 2ND INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON MAIN ROAD. THE ALTERNATOR FAILED WHILE DRIVING. THE RECALL STATES REPLACE ALTERNATOR IF ANY OIL CONTAMINATION IS FOUND WHICH WAS NOT. I NEED HELP TO GET THE REPAIR COST PAID FOR FOR FAULTY WORK.
WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT WITH THE HEADLIGHTS ON, THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD GO OFF COMPLETELY FOR A MOMENT (PERHAPS ONE TO TWO SECONDS) WHEN THE TURN SIGNAL IS USED. THE HEADLIGHTS ALWAYS CAME BACK ON WHEN THE TURN SIGNAL LEVER WAS RETURNED TO THE NORMAL CENTER POSITION. THIS HAS HAPPENED OCCASIONALLY FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS, BUT THEN IT OCCURRED FREQUENTLY ON A RECENT TRIP WHERE I WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT FOR ABOUT SIX HOURS STRAIGHT ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY.

THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000.

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Veracruz vehicles manufactured from December 26, 2006, through July 24, 2012. The affected vehicles may experience an oil leak from the front cylinder bank valve cover gasket. If there is a sufficient amount of oil dropped onto the alternator, the alternator will be damaged causing the charging system to become inoperative.
