Summary

The front passenger occupancy detector (or OC3) failed, making the passenger airbags inoperable. This is a common problem with minis and many other models have had the mat warranty extended. The dealer confirmed that the OC3 is bad but wanted $800 just to order the part which is embedded in the seat cushion. Consumers shouldn't have to bear the cost of a defective vital safety component that should last the life of the car.

Summary

This car was maintained, by Mini and BMW authorized mechanics and only had OEM parts installed and followed management of vehicle as directed by manufacturer, throughout its history. It was always driven and kept in moderate weather conditions, no extreme heat, cold, wet, or speeds. Used almost daily for 30-60 minute commutes. Just after 100K miles, total engine failure was suddenly experienced on the freeway, due to combustion in two valves, damaging two cylinders and sudden leaking of the exhaust system under the hood. The manufacturer, BWM, has been shown evidence of malfunctioning of the four cylinder engine and will not show evidence of their grounds for why they will not take responsibility.

THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WARNING SAFETY LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON WHEN NO-ONE OR SOMEONE IS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT WITH AND WITHOUT THEIR SEATBELT FASTENED. I SEARCHED ONLINE REGARDING THIS AND FOUND SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. SINCE THIS IS POTENTIALLY A SAFETY HAZARD TO A PASSENGER IT MUST BE RECALLED SINCE MULTIPLE MINI COOPERS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS ERROR.

MY MOTHER WHO OWNS THIS 2012 MINI COOPER HAS SUDDENLY NOW STARTED HAVING ISSUES WITH HER WATER PUMP LEAKING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TREATED WITH THIS RUDE EMPLOYEE BY CHRISTOPHER GUZMAN WHOM HAD A VERY UNPROFESSIONAL AND NO EMPATHY. VERY SHORT WITH RESPONSES AND SARCASM.KEEP IN MIND MY MOTHER IS ELDERLY AND KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT CARS. SO I LOG INTO TO YOUR SITE AND SEE THERE IS A RECALL ON WATER PUMPS BUT MY MOTHER'S IS NOT ONE OF THEM. AND GUESS WHAT HER WARRANTY JUST EXPIRED MARCH 2019. GO FIGURE. SO IF SOMETHING WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO MY MOTHER BECAUSE OF DEFECTIVE WATER PUMP. AND HOW FUNNY HOW MY MOMS CAR WAS NOT A RECALL. I WOULD QUALIFY FOR THAT ACTION LAWSUIT. HOW DOES A 2012 WATER PUMP JUST GIVE UP WITH VERY LOW MILEAGE 24 000 I WOULD LIKE TO ESCALATE THIS FURTHER AND AN EXPLANATION HOW THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED!! LOOK AT THE MILAGE!

THE VEHICLE STARTS INTERMITTENTLY. THE IMMOBILIZER OF THE VEHICLE DOES NOT DETECT THE PRESENCE OF THEY KEY FOB IN THE SLOT AND THEREFORE WONT START THE VEHICLE. THESE EVENTS HAPPEN INTERMITTENTLY. ONE INSTANCE WAS IN A GASOLINE STATION. I STOP THE ENGINE AND REFUELED. WHEN IT WAS OVER I COULDNT GET THE CAR TO START BECAUSE THER WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE CAR. I TRIED TO INSERT/EJECT THE KEY FOB IN ITS SLOT AND AFTER COUNTELESS AND MORE THAN THIRTY MINUTES WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED. ONE TIME , I WENT GROCERY SHOPPPING AND WHEN I WAS DONE WHEN BACK TO THE CAR AND IT WOULDN'T START. KNOWING THAT THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING , I DID THE INSERT/EJECT OF KEY FOB IN ITS SLOT COUNTLESS NUMBER OF TIMES. I DID THIS FOR OVER AN HOUR BEFORE I GOT A RESPONSE FROM THE CAR AND GET IT STARTED. MY WIFE IS AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR BECAUSE SHE MAY GET STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. IF THERE IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY AND THIS IS THE ONLY CAR AVAILABLE, IT WOULD BE BETTER OFF TO JUST WAIT FOR THE AMBULANCE THAN ATTEMPT TO BRING THE PERSON NEEDING MEDICAL ATTENTION TO THE HOSPITAL IN THIS CAR BECAUSE YOU MAY GET STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. ANY ROAD TRIP THAT WILL GET YOU 100 MILES AWAY FROM YOUR PLACE OR DRIVING AT NIGHT IS A SAFETY RISK BECAUSE YOU MAY RUN OUT OF FUEL AND REFUEL AT A REMOTE GASOLINE STATION BUT THEN YOU CANT GET THE CAR TO START AGAIN.

THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN 2011 AND HAS REQUIRED A MULTITUDE OF MAINTENANCE /REPAIRS DUE TO MANUFACTURER ISSUES. THE DEALERSHIP OF ORIGINAL PURCHASE WAS INCREDIBLY RESPONSIBLE AND TOOK RESPONSIBILITY OF THESE REPAIRS. I MOVED TO ANOTHER AREA TWO YEARS AGO AND RIGHT ABOUT THIS TIME, THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT BEGAN TO RANDOMLY GO ON AND OFF INDICATING THAT THE AIR BAG WOULD NOT BE ENGAGED. THE LIGHT WILL GO ON AND OFF WHEN IN MOTION OR JUST IDLING. THIS HAS CONTINUED TO GO UNRESOLVED AS I TEND TO MOST OFTEN RIDE ALONE AND DON'T HAVE ADDITIONAL $$$ FOR THE REPAIR AT THIS TIME. I DID JUST FINISH REPLACING THE CLUTCH IN THIS VEHICLE WHICH CURRENTLY ONLY HAS 51K MILES ON IT.

Summary

THE CORE PLUG FAILED ALLOWING COOLANT INTO THE CRANK CASE. THE MINI AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR FACILITY SPECULATED THAT THE VEHILCE MUST HAVE BECOME OVERHEATED TO THE POINT OF DAMAGING THE CYLINDER HEAD. AT FIRST IS WAS THOUGHT THAT A REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD WOULD COST $9K. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE CRANK CASE WAS TO BADLY COMPROMISED FOR ADEQUATE REPAIR AND THE ENTIRE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST THAT EXCEEDED THE MARKET VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. SINCE IT WAS NOT ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE, I WAS FORCE TO PURCHASE AN ALTERNATE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION. BEING THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NO LONGER BE DRIVEN WITH OUT A COSTLY REPAIR, I CHOSE TO DONATE IT FOR CHARITY. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT IF THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED, I WAS NOT AWARE OF IT AS THE DRIVER INFORMATION GAVE NO ALERT. THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT EQUIPED WITH A TEMPERATURE WHICH MAY WHICH SHOULD HAVE INDICATED THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE WAS OUTSIDE OF NORMAL OPERATING PARAMETERS. HOWEVER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHICH I PROMPTLY TOOK TO HAVE IT SERVICED. THE CODE WHICH INITIALLY PRESENTED AND PROMPTED ME TO VISIT THE DEALERSHIP REPAIR FACILITY TO BEGIN WITH. THE VEHICLE GAVE NO TEMPERATURE WARNINGS THROUGH THE DRIVER INFORMATION DISPLAY AND THE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE VEHICLE DID NOT CHANGE; I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY WITH NO PROBLEM. MY CONCERN IS, THERE ARE NUMEROUS ACCOUNTS THAT CAN BE FOUND ONLINE OF DRIVERS THAT GAVE AN ACCOUNT SIMIULAR TO MY EXPERIENCE - FAILURRE OF THE CORE PLUG WITH NO NOTIFICATION THROUGH THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. AND, IN MANY CASES, THEY WERE ALSO TOLD BY THE MAKER'S REPAIR SHOP THAT THE ENGINE OVERHEATED BUT COULD NOT EXPLAIN WHY THE DRIVER WAS NOT ALERTED. WHILE I DID NOT PAY FOR ACTUAL REPAIRS, I WOULD NOT HAVE NEEDED TO BUY REPLACEMENT VEHICLE. I ALSO HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MAINTENCE SCHEDULE.

HANDBRAKE HARNESS NOT ROUTED AS DESIGNED. FROM THE PICTURE YOU CAN SEE THE HARNESS NOT INSIDE THE CLIP. THIS MAKES THE HANDBRAKE HARNESS SHORT FROM POINT TO POINT. WHICH WILL LEAD TO MY REAR PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE ALWAYS ON. AND ALSO, IT WILL CAUSE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE IF I WANT TO USE MY HANDBRAKE TO STOP MY VEHICLE. THE FORCE APPLIED ON PASSENGER SIDE IS WAY MORE THAN DRIVE SIDE ( IT WAS INSTALLED CORRECTLY ) . AND IT MAY LEAD MY PASSENGER SIDE HANDBRAKE WIRING HARNESS BROKEN ( BECAUSE OF THE INCORRECT ROUTING ) I FOUND IT OUT WHEN MY BRAKE LIGHT IN ON. MY FRONT BRAKE STILL WORKING FOR ANOTHER 1100 MILES WHILE MY REAR BRAKE SENSOR TELL ME I NEED TO CHANGE MY BRAKE . WE CHANGE THE REAR PASSENGER BRAKE AND FOUND OUT ITS DIFFICULT TO CLIP THE HANDBRAKE WIRING HARNESS TO RIGHT HOLE. THEN WE TRACK THE WIRING DONE. IT'S SHOCKS ME . THE ROUTING IS 100% INCORRECT. YOU CAN SEE THE CORRECT HANDBRAKE HOLE IS EMPTY.

PASSENGER OCCUPANCY SENSOR IS MALFUNCTIONING LEADING TO THE PASSENGER AIRBAG BEING DISABLED WHILE IN MOTION. A PERSON SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT TRIGGERS THE AIRBAG SENSOR WARNING AND DISABLING OF THE AIRBAG. WHILE THE PERSON IS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, THE WARNING CAN COME ON AND OFF, AND THE ERROR DOES NOT OCCUR WHILE THE SEAT IS UNOCCUPIED. THE OCCUPANCY SENSOR MAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED YET IT IS NOT AVAILABLE TO BE SOLD SEPARATELY AND REQUIRES REPLACING OF THE ENTIRE SEAT CUSHION (COST PROHIBITIVE) AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. BROUGHT 2012 MINI COUNTRYMAN S ALL4 W/50,033 MILES TO MINI SERVICE CENTER FOR COOLANT LEAK JUNE 2017. THEY REPLACED THERMOSTAT HOUSING, THERMOSTAT ADAPTER, COOLANT HOSE, AND WATER PUMP. 8000 MILES LATER LEAK IS BACK. WHILE TECHNICIAN WAS WORKING ON VEHICLE, HE STATED, 'OIL LEAKING FROM OIL PUMP SOLENOID VALVE. OIL LEAKING THROUGH OIL PUMP SOLENOID WIRING HARNESS.' HE ALSO STATED, 'THE LEAK IS INTERNAL AND NOT VISIBLE. THE OIL IS LEAKING THROUGH THE WIRING SHEATH AND MIGRATING TOWARD THE COMPUTER. IF THE OIL REACHES THE COMPUTER, THE COMPUTER WILL SHORT, CAUSING CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE.' TECHNICIAN REPLACED OIL PUMP SOLENOID AND REPAIRED ENGINE WIRING HARNESS.' DURING THE DAYS PERIOD OF TIME THE VEHICLE REMAINED IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, I DID SOME QUICK RESEARCH. I COULD NOT FIND AN ACTIVE RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE/ITEM; HOWEVER, THE NHTSA PUBLISHED A SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN CONCERNING THIS ISSUE (SB-10044680-8464) LOCATED AT THE FOLLOWING LINK: HTTPS://STATIC.NHTSA.GOV/ODI/TSBS/2014/SB-10044680-8464.PDF APPARENTLY, THIS ISSUE WITH THE SOLENOID IS NOT NEW AND HAS BEEN AN ISSUE WITH PREVIOUS MINI MODELS AS WELL. INFORMATION/COMPLAINTS PERTAINING TO PREVIOUS MINI MODELS CAN BE FOUND AT THE FOLLOWING LINK: HTTPS://WWW.NORTHAMERICANMOTORING.COM/FORUMS/R60-COUNTRYMAN-TALK-2010-2015/237021-OIL-PUMP-SOLENOID-LEAK.HTML INFORMATION/COMPLAINTS CONCERNING THIS ISSUE WITH THE SOLENOID FOR CURRENT MINI MODELS CAN BE FOUND AT THE FOLLOWING LINKS: HTTPS://WWW.MINI2.COM/FORUM/SECOND-GENERATION-FAULTS-FIXES/250393-ISSUE-HIGH-PRESSURE-PUMP-OIL-PUMP-SOLENOID-LEAKING.HTML WHEN THE SERVICE/REPAIRS WERE COMPLETE, I SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE CENTER MANAGER CONCERNING THE SOLENOID. HE AGREED WITH MY FINDINGS THAT MINIS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE FOR A GOOD NUMBER OF YEARS. I ASKED IF IT WAS A RECALL ITEM AND HE RESPONDED NEGATIVELY. IS THIS ON THE NHTSA RADAR FOR POTENTIAL RECALL STATUS?

TAKATA RECALL. I LIVE IN NEWPORT, WA. I AM APPROXIMATELY 6 - 7 HOURS FROM A MINI DEALER IN SEATTLE/TACOMA. MY CLOSEST CITY IS SPOKANE, WA. I HAVE A GREAT CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO DOES ALL OF MY REPAIR WORK BRANDON MARTIN OF MARTIN'S AUTO SERVICE, SPOKANE, WA, WHO IS COMPETENT AT WORKING ON MINI-COOPERS. IT IS UNREASONABLE TO REQUIRE THAT I MAKE A TRIP TO SEATTLE FOR THIS REPAIR. I AM WILLING TO HAVE THE REPAIR DONE HERE AND BE REIMBURSED, BUT MINI WILL NOT ALLOW THAT. THEY ARE REQUIRING EXTREME TRAVEL AND EVEN AN OVERNIGHT STAY TO ABIDE BY THEIR OWN RECALL REGULATIONS. THEY DO SEEM TO MAKE THE RULES TO SUIT THEMSELVES; BECAUSE IF I HAD MADE THIS REPAIR PRIOR TO THE RECALL, THEY WOULD HAVE REIMBURSED ME, BUT NOW I CANNOT HAVE THE REPAIR DONE WITHOUT EXTREME ADDED EXPENSES INCURRED. DUE TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF EXCESS TRAVEL, I RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT I AM ABLE TO MAKE THE RECALL REPAIR AND BE REIMBURSED FOR THE COST. THIS IS NECESSARY FOR MY SAFETY. DUE TO THE COMPANY'S UNREASONABLE RULE, I AM AT RISK.

HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR IMMEDIATELY EXITING ONTO THE OFF RAMP, THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT WARNING. I COULD HAVE ALMOST DIED BECAUSE OF THE FIRE; THIS FAULTY ENGINEERING BY BMW/MINI HAS ALREADY TAKEN THE LIFE OF A DRIVER IN SOUTH KOREA. BMW ISSUED A RECALL OF THE 2012 MINI COOPER S ROADSTER, BUT WHEN I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO ONE OF THEIR SERVICE CENTERS, THE TECHNICIANS WERE UNAWARE OF THIS MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND STATED THAT THE REPAIR PARTS ARE UNAVAILABLE. I SEE THAT MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN RECALLED, BUT WHEN I TYPE IN MY VIN, NO RECALL IS ATTACHED TO MY VEHICLE. BMW/MINI IS TAKING NO ACTION; THEY ARE HARMING AND KILLING DRIVERS OF ITS VEHICLES.

I'M JUST NOTICING A COOLANT LEAK PUDDLING UP UNDER FROM WHAT I WAS TOLD WAS THE THERMOSTAT OR IT'S HOUSING OR BOTH.. MY ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE IT'S RUNNING WITH NO OIL. I GO TO CHECK THE DIPSTICK AND THE OIL AT THE VERY END OF IT SEEMS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO ACCURATELY READ, BECAUSE IT'S NOT UNIFORM IN IT'S COATING AT THE TIP OF IT. LIKE IF IT WAS SPLASHED ON. NOT SURE IF THE AUXILIARY COOLING SYSTEM IS EVEN WORKING ANYMORE, WHICH USED TO RUN FOR A MINUTE OR TWO AFTER ENGINE SHUT DOWN. I'M ADDING THE OEM SPECIFIED COOLANT ALONG WITH WATER, 50/50, EVERY DAY NOW, BECAUSE THE RESERVOIR SHOWS IT'S LOSS OF COOLANT. VIN CHECK SHOWS NO RECALLS, BUT I'M HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AS THE RECALLS. I JUST WANT MY VEHICLE RUNNING LIKE IT WAS WHEN I FIRST GOT. I BEGAN FINANCE ON THE VEHICLE LESS THAN A YEAR AGO, AND I STILL OWE 16K ON IT. I SHOULDN'T BE WORRIED ABOUT THE CAR DYING OUT ON ME ALREADY. BAD ENOUGH I WORK 35 MINUTES AWAY AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION INCLUDING HELP FROM ANYONE IS ALSO PRETTY MUCH IMPOSSIBLE. IT'S STRESSING ME OUT BIG TIME. I CAN'T AFFORD TO GET FIRED. WHERE I WORK, THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT MY ISSUES. I ALSO REQUIRE AN IID EQUIPPED VEHICLE, SO RENTALS ARE OUT OF THE QUESTION, OTHERWISE, I PROBABLY WOULDN'T BE HERE WRITING THIS MESSAGE! THANK YOU. I REALLY FEEL UNSAFE BEING ON THE HIGHWAY AS WHO KNOWS IF MY CAR'S ENGINE EVEN HAS OIL. OR IF THE COOLANT HOSES WILL JUST BLOW OFF. EITHER WAY, I FEEL LIKE I'M RIDING WITH DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT. I TRIED TO BABY THIS CAR DRIVING, BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD A 16K BROKEN CAR. I FEEL TRAPPED.

THE PASSENGER SEAT AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON ONE DAY WHEN STARTING THE CAR. I TOOK IT INTO A MINI SPECIALIST AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE INDICATOR SENSOR IN THE SEAT. OTHER MINI MODELS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAVE BEEN RECALLED. HE QUOTED $600-700 TO REPAIR IT. HE COULD NOT GUARANTEE THE AIR BAG WOULD DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS SEEMS LIKE A NO BRAINER.

BRAKE LIGHT FAILED, BULB COULD NOT BE REMOVED FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE. DEALER SAID THE COMPLETE ASSEMBLY WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. UPON REMOVING THE ASSEMBLY, THE FIXTURE WAS REVIEWED TO FIND WHERE EXCESIVE HEAT HAD MELTED THE CONNECTION TO THE BULB (SAME ONES USED IN BMWS THAT MELTED THE WIRING HARNESS BACK IN 2003). I REPAIRD THE THE ASSEMBLY BY SOLDERING THE SOCKETS TO THE BOARD SUCH THAT IT DID NOT DEPEND ON A PIECE OF PLASTIC FOR PRESSURE CONTACT. IT WORKS, BUT WHEN A BULB TRUELY BURNS OUT, THE ASSEMBLY MUST BE REMOVED TO CHANGE THE BULB.

WARNING LAMP FOR "AIRBAG SYSTEM FAILED" ILLUMINATED ONE DAY WHILE DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT STREET "IN TOWN" APPROX 25MPH. AT FIRST LIGHT WENT OFF IF I BUCKLED PASSENGER SEATBELT (EVEN WHEN SEAT WAS EMPTY) NOW IT WON'T GO OFF EVEN DOING THAT... ALSO DOESN'T MATTER IF DRIVING AT HIGH OR LOW SPEEDS, ROAD TYPES, TURNING, STOPPING, PARKED, DRIVING, PASSENGER IN RIDER'S SEAT, NO RIDING PASSENGER, ETC, IT WILL ILLUMINATE (& I NEVER PLACE ANYTHING ON MY PASSENGER SEAT). TOOK TO A MECHANIC - HE CHECKED & PROVIDED CODE 9435. STATED AIRBAGS MIGHT NOT DEPLOY WHEN THIS WARNING LAMP IS ILLUMINATED. SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MINI COOPERS & IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT HE THINKS PROBABLY SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER A RECALL. CONTACTED MINI DEALERSHIP - SAID NO RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE. FROM WHAT I HAVE FOUND THERE ARE ALMOST 100,000 OTHER MINIS THAT HAVE HAD A RECALL FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM, HOWEVER, THEY TELL ME MY VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL - WANT TO CHARGE ME MINIMALLY $65 JUST TO RE-DIAGNOSE THE CODE, THEN LABOR & PARTS TO FIX! CALLED MINI CUSTOMER SERVICE - TOLD ME NO RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE & THEY REFERRED ME HERE.

TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN RADIATOR HOSE LEAKING. NEEDS UPPER RADIATOR HOSE, AND THERMOSTAT WITH HARNESS TO CORRECT. DISCOVERED DURING A ROUTINE OIL BRAKES ETC INSPECTION BY THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A CHANGE IN THE HARNESS AND THE NEW ONE HAS A "COMPUTER" AND WOULD COST $1450 TO FIX. THIS IS AN UPPER HOSE AND I LOOKED ONLINE AND FOUND THE REPLACEMENT HARNESS HAS TOW SEPARATE CONNECTORS, ONE FOR COOLANT TEMP SENSOR AND THE OTHER FOR THE COOLANT THERMOSTAT. I HD CHECKED MY FLUIDS TWO DAYS BEFORE ON A COLD ENGINE AND THEY WERE FINE AND WATER OVERFLOW WAS AT THE PROPER LEVEL. I CHECKED MY COOLANT OVERFLOW TANK THE DAY AFTER VISITING THE DEALERSHIP ON A COLD ENGINE AND THE OVERFLOW TANK WAS LOW... I ADDED WATER... IT HAS NOT GONE DOWN FOR SEVERAL DAYS. I HAVE HEARD THERE IS CORROSION THAT HAPPENS AND THE THERMOSTAT MAY NOT EMPLOY AND YOU CAN HAVE AN OVERHEATED ENGINE.

CAR KEY STUCK IN SLOT AND WOULD NOT ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO SHIFT. AFTER TAKING IT IN FOR REPAIR TO MINI COOPER, WE WERE INFORMED THAT MOISTURE WAS FOUND IN A COMPUTER WHICH IS LOCATED UNDER THE BEVERAGE HOLDER. YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT. A COMPUTER UNDER THE BEVERAGE HOLDER AND NO MOISTURE BARRIER, NO PROTECTION OVER THIS COMPONENT.. NOW WHO DOES THAT? THERE IS NOTHING IN THE OWNERS MANUAL TO WARN YOU OF THIS NOR IS THERE ANY INDICATION ON THE BEVERAGE HOLDER ITSELF THAT INDICATES THERE IS A COMPUTER COMPONENT BELOW. HOW WOULD A CONSUMER KNOW? HONESTLY, WHO DESIGNS A CAR LIKE THIS? OF COURSE THERE WILL BE MOISTURE... ITS A BEVERAGE HOLDER FOR PETE SAKE! IT WAS A $1200. FIX. HAD I KNOWN OR BEEN PRE-WARNED SOMEHOW, I WOULD NOT HAVE USED THE DARN THING OR AT LEAST WRAPPED MY DRINKS IN A PAPER TOWEL. DRIVING 45 MPH ON BUSY CITY FOUR-LANE ROAD, I BRAKED GRADUALLY IN APPROACH TO RED LIGHT, WHICH IS MY NORMAL BRAKING STYLE. CAR DID NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP--BRAKES ONLY WORKED TO A POINT BUT DID NOT COMPLETELY STOP CAR; SIMULTANEOUSLY ENGINE REVVED TO VERY HIGH RPM. I THREW TRANSMISSION INTO PARK AND TURNED OFF IGNITION LEST MY CAR RAM CAR AHEAD OF ME. VERY FRIGHTENING. AT PREVIOUS TWO LIGHTS I HAD NOTICED THAT BRAKES WERE ACTING FUNNY, NOT BRINGING CAR TO A COMPLETE STOP BUT I HAD LEFT PLENTY OF BRAKING DISTANCE AND WAS ABLE TO LET CAR ROLL TO A STOP, IN SPITE OF BRAKES NOT EFFECTING A COMPLETE STOP . AT THOSE TWO LIGHTS THE RUNAWAY ENGINE (HIGH RPM) DID NOT OCCUR OR I WOULD HAVE PULLED OVER RIGHT THEN. HOWEVER, ENGINE REVVING TO HIGH RPM HAS ALSO OCCURRED OCCASIONALLY WHEN PULLING INTO GARAGE BUT I HAD NOT GIVEN THIS A LOT OF THOUGHT BECAUSE I HAVE QUICKLY TURNED OFF IGNITION. NOW I KNOW IT'S VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. OF COURSE I AM NOT DRIVING IT BUT AM HAVING IT TOWED TO DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY AT DEALER AND HAS 24,239 MILES ON IT. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A NECESSITY FOR REPAIRS ON THIS MINI COOPER CLUBMAN.

UPON ENTERING AN EXIT ONLY LINE ON THE HIGHWAY AT THE END OF A 400 MILE JOURNEY, TRAFFIC BACKED UP AND CAME TO A STOP IN THE EXIT ONLY LANE. WHEN TRAFFIC STARTED MOVING AGAIN, MY CAR WHICH HAS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT FROM NEUTRAL INTO 1ST GEAR (OR ANY GEAR). I WAS STOPPED AND UNABLE TO MOVE WITH TRAFFIC MOVING 50-60 MPH BEHIND ME AND NEXT TO ME. CARS SLAMMED ON BRAKES TO AVOID HITTING ME AND ONE ALMOST HIT ME AFTER SLAMMING ON ITS BREAKS AND TURNING SIDEWAYS. IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST TERRIFYING EXPERIENCES I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. A STATE POLICE OFFICE PULLED UP BEHIND ME AFTER ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES AND WAS ABLE TO PUSH ME TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE. THERE WAS A TERRIBLE BURNING SMELL AND CONSIDERABLE SMOKE FROM UNDER THE CAR WHICH INDICATED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP WHERE I LATER LEARNED THE CLUTCH MATERIAL HAD DISINTEGRATED ENTIRELY AND THE FLYWHEEL WAS CRAZED AND BURNED FROM THE EXTREME HEAT. BOTH THE CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE COST TO REPAIR THE CAR WAS OVER $4000. THE CAR HAD 78,067 MILES ON IT AND PRIOR TO THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH THERE WERE ONLY 2 INDICATIONS OF A POTENTIAL CLUTCH PROBLEM WHEN THE TACHOMETER FLUTTERED WHEN SHIFTING INTO HEAR AT ABOUT 300 MILES PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT AND THEN ABOUT 25 MILES PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT, INDICATING TO ME THAT THE CLUTCH WAS STARTING TO SLIP. OTHER THAN THAT, THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OR OTHER INDICATIONS OF A PROBLEM. THE CAR IS ROUTINELY SERVICED BY THE DEALER AND WHENEVER THERE IS ANY INDICATION OF A PROBLEM. I DO NOT DRIVE CARS HARD. THIS CAR IS STILL ON ITS FIRST SET OF BRAKES AND ONLY ITS SECOND SET OF TIRES. I HAVE DRIVEN MANUAL SHIFT CARS FOR MANY YEARS AND KNOW THE SYMPTOMS OF A FAILING CLUTCH. I CONSIDER THE NEAR CATASTROPHE THAT I EXPERIENCED THE RESULT OF A MAJOR DEFECT IN EITHER THE CLUTCH OR THE WARNING MECHANISM.

2012 MINI COOPER COUNTRYMAN MANUAL TRANSMISSION. LIVE IN A MOUNTAINOUS REGION IN COLORADO. NOTICED A PECULIAR SMELL COMING FROM THE CAR AFTER BEING STUCK IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. HAD THE CAR SERVICED AND THEY SAID EVERYTHING WAS GOOD TO GO. FEW DAYS LATER WHEN ON VACATION DRIVING THROUGH NEVADA, THE CLUTCH COMPLETELY GAVE OUT & LEFT US STRANDED FROM 8:30 AT NIGHT UNTIL 2:30 IN THE MORNING BEFORE THE TOW TRUCK COULD GET TO US. DEALER VERIFIED THAT THE CLUTCH WAS INOPERABLE AND REPLACED THE CLUTCH DISK, FLYWHEEL, AND PRESSURE PLATE UNDER WARRANTY. MANAGER SAID THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE THEY HAVE SEEN A FEW TIMES PREVIOUSLY. NOW, 12,000 MILES (41,000 TOTAL) AND 6 MONTHS LATER, THE SAME THING AS HAPPENED. BUT NOW, MINI IS SAYING THAT IT'S "DRIVER ERROR" OR "WEAR AND TEAR" AND NOT COVERED. DEALER SERVICE MANAGER STILL ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR THE REGION WE LIVE IN. HOWEVER, I AM EXPECTED TO COME UP WITH $3,000 TO FIX THIS PLUS KEEP PAYING A NEW CAR PAYMENT. I HAVE DRIVEN MANUAL TRANSMISSION CARS/TRUCKS/MOTORCYCLES/SPORTS CARS FOR 35 YEARS AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH A CLUTCH GOING OUT ON ME BEFORE. THIS IS MY 3RD MINI, AND IT WILL BE THE LAST I WILL EVER OWN, I CAN'T WAIT TO GET RID OF IT. MINI HAS HAD ENOUGH TROUBLE WITH THIS THAT THEY CHANGED THE CLUTCH IN THE 2013 MODELS. EXTREMELY UPSET WITH THEM AS A COMPANY THAT THEY CAN'T STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND FESS UP THAT THEY DIDN'T PUT A CLUTCH IN A CAR THAT WAS APPROPRIATE TO HANDLE THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE. DON'T BUY ONE UNLESS YOU LIVE IN THE FLATLANDS AND DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH TRAFFIC! *TR

ELECTRONIC FUEL PUMP FAILED TWICE WITHIN A YEAR. MANUAL TRANSMISSION - CLUTCH DOES NOT ENGAGE GEARS PROPERLY. FRICTION POINT IS VAGUE AND UNENGAGING. GEAR SLIPS. REQUIRES EXCEEDINGLY HIGH REV. COUNTS/GAS TO ENGAGE IN GEAR PROPERLY. CAR STALLS MORE THAN NORMAL/OFTEN. OVERALL FUEL INJECTION/ECU MAPPING/CLUTCH ISSUES ARE EVIDENTLY AND REPEATS TO BE PROBLEM AREAS DESPITE PARTS REPLACEMENT AND ADJUSTMENT (ECU RE-MAP). FROM THE OWNER'S EXPERIENCE, THE CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING ON THE FREEWAY DUE TO FUEL PUMP FAILURES (TWICE) THUS CREATING ROAD HAZARD FOR FELLOW DRIVERS ON THE FREEWAY AT HIGH SPEED AS WELL AS MY OWN PERSONAL SAFETY. ALSO, DUE TO STALLING ISSUES OFF THE LINE, ENTERING FREEWAY AFTER METER-SIGNAL IS ALSO DANGEROUS IN MULTIPLE OCCASIONS CREATING POTENTIAL THREAT TO SAFETY. MANUFACTURER NEED TO ADDRESS BROAD ISSUE OF FUEL SYSTEM/POWERTRAIN/CLUTCH BEFORE ANYONE GETS SERIOUS HURT OR INJURED TO SUDDEN IMMOBILITY/STALLS. IN PARTICULAR, THE CLUTCH IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION IS SO BAD THAT IT DOES NOT FULFILL THE INTENDED FUNCTION OF ENGAGING GEARS. *TR

Summary

I PURCHASED THE 2012 MINI NEW AND TOOK DELIVERY 12/20/2013. THE FIRST ISSUE INVOLVED THE SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHT AND ALARM. AFTER DRIVING THE CAR FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES THE FASTEN SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH THE AUDIBLE ALARM. THE SEAT BELT WAS SECURELY FASTENED, I HAD NO PASSENGERS AND THERE WAS NOTHING ON THE PASSENGER SEAT. I PULLED OVER AGAIN, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, TOOK THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION, AND UNFASTENED THE SEAT BELT. AFTER 5 MINUTES I FASTENED THE SEAT BELT AND RESTARTED THE CAR. THE WARNING RESUMED IMMEDIATELY AND CONTINUED FOR THE ENTIRE 1 HOUR DRIVE HOME. I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THE SERVICE MANAGER DISMISSED MY CONCERN AND INSISTED THERE MUST BE A HEAVY PURSE OR GROCERY BAG ON THE SEAT. THIS ISSUE CONTINUES. THE 2ND PROBLEM WAS STEERING FAILURE. ONE MORNING I WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE WHEELS TO LEAVE MY DRIVEWAY. THE CAR WAS RUNNING. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND TRIED AGAIN.I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID HE HAD SPOKEN TO HIS "TOP MECHANICS" AND NONE OF THEM COULD THINK OF A SINGLE THING THAT WOULD CAUSE THE PROBLEM. HE INSISTED IT WAS DRIVER ERROR: I HAD STALLED THE CAR, THE PARKING BRAKE WAS ON, OR THERE WAS SOMETHING UNDER THE CAR PREVENTING THE WHEELS FROM TURNING. NO, NO AND NO. THE ISSUE APPARENTLY FIXED ITSELF LATER THAT DAY. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR A CHECK OF THESE PROBLEMS. THE SCAN INDICATED A FAULTY POWER STEERING MODULE. THE FOREMAN OF THE SERVICE DEPT TOLD ME THIS WAS A FREQUENT PROBLEM IN THE 2011 MODELS. THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE SEAT BELT SYSTEM. THE PROBLEM PERSISTS TO THIS DAY INTERMITTENTLY. THE LAST TIME I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER HE TOLD ME TO TAKE A PHOTO OF THE INFORMATION DISPLAY THE NEXT TIME IT HAPPENED TO "PROVE THAT THE CAR IS RUNNING WHEN THE WARNING LIGHT COMES ON" - HE WANTS TO SEE THE SPEEDOMETER. *TR

Summary

FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, I HAVE HAD DIFFICULTY WITH MY 2012 COUNTRYMAN ALL4 S CLUTCH. THE CAR SIMPLY WILL NOT GO UP HILLS. LIVING IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST, THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN IN MULTIPLE SITUATIONS WHERE THE CAR WILL NOT ENGAGE, RESULTING IN STALLING AND A BURNING CLUTCH. I'VE HAD TO STOP AND MOTION FOR PEOPLE TO GO AROUND ME TO AVOID ROLLING BACK INTO THEM. I TOOK IT IN TWICE SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. NOT SURPRISINGLY, AT 9,500 MILES, MY CLUTCH COMPLETELY BURNED OUT 200 MILES FROM HOME. AT FIRST, MINI SAID MY WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER AND TRIED TO CHARGE ME ~$3,000, BUT AFTER COMPLAINING, THEY AGREED TO COVER 75%. THEY TOLD ME THE NEW CLUTCH IS UPGRADED/IMPROVED; HOWEVER, I STILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUES ON HILLS AND HAVE TO AVOID THEM, OR TAKE OUR OTHER CAR IF DRIVING INTO THE MOUNTAINS. THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS AS CITED ON MULTIPLE AUTO REVIEW SITES. I RECENTLY ASKED MINI TO BUY-BACK MY COUNTRYMAN BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE CLUTCH PROBLEMS, AND BECAUSE IT'S TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE ANYWHERE THERE IS A HILL (EVEN A SMALL ONE). THE ANSWER WAS SIMPLY "NO". I AM FRUSTRATED AND FED UP WITH THE LACK OF CONCERN BY MINI...THEY KNOW THIS IS A PROBLEM AND ARE DOING NOTHING TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION. I CANNOT KEEP THIS CAR, BUT CERTAINLY DO NOT WANT TO SELL TO AN UNSUSPECTING INDIVIDUAL. *TR

Summary

ON A 2012 MINI COUNTRYMAN S ALL4 WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION, STARTING AT 15500 MILES ON THE CAR, BEGAN NOTICING ODD RESPONSE TO THE THROTTLE WHEN ACCELERATING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE CLUTCH WOULD ENGAGE AND ENGINE INCREASE REVS (200-400 RPM) TO ACCELERATE WHILE NOT DEPRESSING THE CLUTCH PEDAL. THIS WORSENED OVER THE NEXT 500 MILES UNTIL THE RPM DIFFERENCE WAS 2000-4000 RPM. FINALLY, THE CLUTCH GAVE COMPLETELY, WITH SMOKE BILLOWING FROM THE HOOD AND OBVIOUS SMELL OF BURNT PLATE, EVEN THOUGH I HAD NOT ENGAGED THE PEDAL WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY IN HIGH GEAR. AFTER ALLOWING THE CAR TO REST DURING THE DAY, I MANAGED TO GET MOVING FOR 1/4 MILE BEFORE STOPPING AT A LIGHT. UPON TAKEOFF, THE CAR SHUDDERED VIOLENTLY, AND THEN DISENGAGED FROM 1ST GEAR AND WOULD NOT RE-ENGAGE. HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALER FOR REPLACEMENT. *TR

MY MINI WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT BEHIND A TOYOTA 4 RUNNER WHEN I WAS STRUCK FROM THE BACK BY A CARELESS DRIVER IN A MIDSIZE SEDAN WHO HAD FAILED TO SEE THE CARS IN FRONT OF HER STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. THE DAMAGE DONE TO BOTH THE CAR THAT STRUCK MINE FROM BEHIND AS WELL AS THE DAMAGE DONE TO THE 4 RUNNER WERE MINIMAL BY COMPARISON. THE MINI INCURRED IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END OF THE CAR. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE AIRBAGS NEVER DEPLOYED AND THE DRIVER OF THE 4 RUNNER PULLED ME OUT OF THE CAR DUE TO FIRE HE SAW COMING FROM UNDER THE ENGINE OF THE MINI, BEFORE LONG THE WHOLE FRONT END WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE CAR WAS DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS. SHOULD THE VEHICLE HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE? SHOULDN'T THE AIRBAGS HAVE DEPLOYED WITH THE GRAVITY OF THE DAMAGE? *TR
