Summary

Vehicle has had all recommended maintenance performed on schedule at the Audi dealer. Driving down a highway at about 73k miles, engine stopped running with no warning. Electronic systems appeared as though engine was running, but it was dead. We were extremely fortunate that this happened on a rural highway and not the big city freeway system we had recently driven through. Cause of the problem was a total engine failure, later discovered to be failure of the turbocharging system. Checking online reveals that it likely due to a defect in an oil strainer. Sudden catastrophic engine failure at only 73K miles in a dealer-maintained vehicle is a safety hazard, to the occupants of the vehicle as well as to surrounding cars that have to navigate around a suddenly powerless car.

Summary

Turbocharged failed while driving in afternoon traffic, leaving car stranded at heavy traffic stoplight until tow could be arranged. Failure occurred while idling at the stop light. Failed turbochargers are available for inspection. Failure was initially diagnosed / confirmed by dealership (Audi Chantilly) but due to extreme cost of repair quoted by dealer, car was transported to an independent garage for the repair. Failed turbocharger was inspected at dealership using micro-camera for diagnosis of the problem. There were no warnings, check engine lights, strange noises, loss of power, etc..; failure was total and instantaneous. Additional information: This is a totally stock vehicle, no modifications or tuning performed. It has never been raced or abused. The 'launch mode' built into the car's design (for fast acceleration from stop) has never been used on this vehicle. Put simply, this vehicle was 'babied'. For the initial life of the car, all maintenance was performed at dealership (Audi Chantilly) under service contact. Upon expiration of service contract (~65K miles) all service was performed by owner. Knowing of the turbocharger oil feed defect present in this model Audi's design, owner increased oil change service frequency to (unsuccessfully) try preventing turbocharger failure. All owner supplied oil change materials (oil and filters) were consistent with Audi factory requirements.

Summary

While driving in city traffic, the car went into limp mode with some new lights on the dashboard. Before I could get to a safe place, it completely died and almost caused an accident. I was stuck until I had help pushing the car off the road. Upon reading the OBDII computer codes and then confirming with a professional mechanic, both turbos had blown. There was little warning, and no time to have a safe option once the warning light came on. Upon reading up on this platform, Audi has a defective oil screen that gets clogged and oil starves the turbos which makes them fail prematurely. Hopefully, they will fix this issue moving forward.

Summary

HAVING JUST EXITED THE INTERSTATE AND STOPPED AT THE END OF THE EXIT RAMP, MY 2013 AUDI S6 STARTED TO STALL AS I WAS TURNING ONTO A SECONDARY ROAD. I MANAGED TO PULL THE CAR OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BEFORE I LOST ALL FORWARD POWER, AVOIDING TRAFFIC IN MOTION IN PROXIMITY TO MY VEHICLE. THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART AFTER A CHECK TO INSURE THINGS SUCH AS A PROPER AMOUNT OF FUEL WAS IN THE GAS TANK. AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS AT STARTING THE CAR FAILED, I HAD THE S6 FLAT BEDDED TO THE NEAREST AUDI DEALER FOR REPAIR. I SPOKE TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL DAYS AFTER THE INCIDENT AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS TWO FAILED TURBOCHARGERS. THE FAILURE WAS ATTRIBUTED TO THE TURBOCHARGER OIL SCREEN CLOGGING PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THE REPLACEMENT (PARTS + LABOR) WOULD BE IN THE $12,000+ RANGE. I AUTHORIZED THE OUT OF WARRANTY REPAIR AS THE CAR WAS IN EXCELLENT AND WELL MAINTAINED CONDITION AND I WAS NOT READY TO SCRAP IT. THE DEALER SEVERAL DAYS LATER INFORMED ME THAT AUDI CORPORATE HAD REVIEWED THE FAILURE AND WAS WILLING TO ABSORB 75% OF THE ESTIMATED REPAIR BILL AS THE S6 HAD JUST COME OUT OF WARRANTY AND HAD BEEN PROPERLY DEALER MAINTAINED. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER I WAS ABLE TO PICK UP THE CAR WITH A PAYMENT DUE FOR REPAIRS (AFTER AUDI 75% COVERAGE) OF $2674.26 WITH THE NEW TURBOS INSTALLED AND THE S6 WAS NOW RUNNING PROPERLY AGAIN. I NOW HESITATE TO USE THE CAR FOR ANY LONG TRIPS ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO CONCERN I MAY HAVE A RECURRENCE OF THIS TURBO FAILURE EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS BEING DEALER SERVICED PROPERLY AT THE SUGGESTED INTERVALS. FURTHER, I BELIEVE THIS INHERENT PROBLEM HAS DIMINISHED THE RESALE OR TRADE-IN VALUE OF THIS 2013 AUDI S6. I WAS FORCED TO RENT A CAR FOR SEVERAL DAYS TO RETURN HOME AFTER THIS FAILURE WHICH IN TOTAL COST WAS $500+.

THE TURBOS ON THE S6 FAILED AFTER ONLY 50,000 MILES. THIS MAKES THE CAR HAVE DANGEROUSLY LOW POWER AND NEARLY UNDRIVEABLE. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMMON OCCURRENCE FOR AUDI 4.0TT MODELS, AND AUDI EVEN ISSUED A TSB REGARDING THE ISSUE TO IT'S SERVICE CENTERS. BUT TO DATE, AUDI HAS NOT RECTIFIED THE ISSUE OR MADE CONTACT WITH THOSE WHO ARE OUT OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD. BLOWN TURBOS CAUSE ALL SORTS OF ISSUES, INCLUDING POTENTIAL ENGINE DAMAGE, CYLINDER MISFIRES, FUEL PRESSURE ISSUES, AND OVER-HEATING. ON MY PARTICULAR VEHICLE, THE TURBOS FAILED SIMPLY BY STARTING THE CAR AFTER SITTING IN THE GARAGE FOR A FEW DAYS, UNDRIVEN. COST TO REPLACE TURBOS AND MAKE REPAIRS IS $10,000 TO $15,000.

I THEN DROVE SOME ADDITIONAL DISTANCE AND IT STALLED IN TRAFFIC. IT STALLED REPEATEDLY WHENEVER THE RPM'S FELL BELOW 2000. I ENDED UP RUNNING A RED LIGHT, TO AVOID SLOWING DOWN, KNOWING IT WOULD STALL. FORTUNATELY, I WAS IN AN UNCROWDED AREA. IT LOOKS LIKE AUDI HAS ALREADY ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THE PROPENSITY FOR TURBO FAILURE. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE THAN THAT HAPPEN.

THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS RECALLS FOR MY 2013 AUDI S6 PERTAINING TO THE TURBOCHARGED ENGINE. MOST RECENTLY, OVER THE LAST 2 WEEKS I NOTICED DECREASING GAS MILEAGE AND INCREASING TURBO LAG BUT THE CAR STILL RAN "NORMALLY" OVERALL. THEN, 1 DAY AGO IT MADE INTERMITTENT METALLIC SOUNDS AT STARTUP BUT THEN STILL RAN NORMALLY. THEN, THE NEXT DAY THE CAR HAD THE SAME STARTUP SOUNDS BUT THEN HAD A ROUGH IDLE AT STOPLIGHTS. I STOPPED FOR GAS AND THE CAR WOULDNT RESTART AT THE GAS STATION. IT WAS TOWED TO AUDI WHERE THE CAR WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF BOTH TURBOCHARGERS AND QUOTED APPROXIMATELY $10,000 TO FIX. BEING A 2013 AUDI S6 MODEL WITH 60,000 MILES ON IT, IT IS OUTSIDE OF AUDI'S 48 MONTH/50,000 MILE WARRANTY. THIS IS KNOWN ISSUE FOR 2013-2016 AUDI SEDAN OWNERS, PARTICULARLY THE 2013 S6. THIS CAR WAS PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY SOMEONE WHO HAD IT SERVICED AT AUDI DEALERSHIPS AND I HAVE PURCHASED AUDI CARE MAINTENANCE PACKAGES WHICH I HAVE HAD PERFORMED AT THEIR RECOMMENDED INTERVALS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS. THERE HAS BEEN A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN MADE FOR THIS KNOWN ISSUE. I HAD A PREVIOUS ENGINE TSB THAT AUDI ORIGINALLY HAD ME PAY $2300 FOR TO FIX, HOWEVER A YEAR LATER I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION AND THAT MONEY WAS REFUNDED. THERE WAS ALSO A PREVIOUS RECALL RELATING TO THE TURBOCHARGED SEALS AND COOLANT LINES. ALL OF THESE SERVICE RECALLS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED. CLEARLY THERE IS A ENGINEERING ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL ENGINE.

I TRIED TO ACCELERATE AND COULD NOT SO I PULLED OVER AND THE CAR IMMEDIATELY STALLED AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP. THE ISSUE IS A RESULT OF THE TURBOS IN MY VEHICLE ARE DAMAGED. MECHANIC SAID THERE IS A KNOWN ISSUE RELATED TO A SCREEN THAT FILTERS THE OIL THAT CAN GET CLOGGED OVERTIME AND CAUSE OIL STARVATION TO THE TURBOS INCREASING HEAT AND ULTIMATELY CAUSING FAILURE. AUDI HAS RELEASED A TSB FOR THIS FAULT WITH UPDATED PARTS HOWEVER THESE ISSUES CONTINUE TO PLAGUE VEHICLES LIKE MINE THAT HAVE OTHERWISE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF. THE REPAIR COSTS FOR THIS COULD BE UPWARDS OF $9K ALL BECAUSE OF A DESIGN FLAW. NOT TO MENTION THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS IF LOSS OF POWER OCCURS ON THE HIGHWAY WHICH COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.

CAR SUDDENLY HAD A "ROUGH IDLE", I.E. SHAKING 1-2INCHES BACK-AND-FORTH WHILE IN IDLE, AFTER DRIVING FOR 20 MINUTES AT NORMAL CONDITIONS. SHUTDOWN CAR. ATTEMPTED TO RESTART CAR, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURNOVER THE FIRST ATTEMPT. TRIED AGAIN - ENGINE STARTED THE SECOND TIME. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED, SO I ASSUMED CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. DROVE CAR TO DEALER FOR SERVICE, AND THEN I NOTED THAT THE CAR STARTED MAKING A FEINT GRINDING NOISE WHEN ACCELERATING. TECHNICIAN NOTED THAT BOTH TURBOCHARGERS HAD FAILED, LIKELY DUE TO INADEQUATE OIL FLOW. CAR HAS 60K MILES ON IT, SO A CATASTROPHIC TURBOCHARGER FAILURE THIS EARLY-ON WAS UNEXPECTED AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS (CAR COULD HAVE STALLED DUE WITH ENGINE BEING STARVED FOR AIR), AND NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED TO INDICATE SOMETHING WAS SEVERELY WRONG WITH CAR. I AM HAVING A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WITH MY CAR AND IT SEEMS LIKE AUDI OF AMERICA (AOA) DOES NOT SEEM TO REALLY CARE. IT ALL STARTED IN AUG 2015 AND A BUNCH OF FAULT CODES CAME ONE. THE SECOND TIME, I BELIEVE, WAS JAN 2016 AND I WAS DRIVING ON I-95 AND SUDDENLY ABOUT 5 FAULT CODES SHOWED UP WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 70MPH IN THE MIDDLE LANE. THE CAR'S STEERING STIFFENED UP AND I COULD NOT ACCELERATE. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS NEXT TO ME AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SHOULDER. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A MAJOR CATASTROPHE IF I WAS NOT ABLE TO PULL OVER WITH THE AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC THERE IS ON I-95 INCLUDING LOTS OF SEMI-TRUCKS. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND TURNED IT ON AND I SLOWLY DROVE HOME. I ALSO DRIVE THIS CAR WITH MY NEWBORN IN IT EVERYDAY. I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND FLAT BEDDED THE CAR TO THEM. THEY SAW THE FAULT CODES AND WERE OBVIOUSLY CONCERNED SO THEY TALKED TO SOMEONE AT AOA. THEY ENDED UP CHANGING A MODULE AND ASSURED ME THAT IT WAS FIXED. WELL ON JUNE 8, 2016 IT HAPPENED AGAIN. AGAIN I WAS LUCKY BECAUSE I WAS ON BACK ROADS WITH NO TRAFFIC. HOWEVER, I DID HAPPEN TO HAVE MY NEWBORN WITH ME! I AM FURIOUS BECAUSE HIS LIFE IS IN JEOPARDY NOW. I IMMEDIATELY CALL AOA INSTEAD OF THE DEALERSHIP THIS TIME AND THEY OPENED UP A CASE. AOA SAID TO FLATBED THE CAR AGAIN TO YOUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP. AFTER 3 DAYS, THE DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THERE IS A GROUND FAULT WITH THE CAR. AOA CALLED ME AND SAID THEY FIXED IT BUT THIS IS WHAT THEY "ASSURED" ME OF LAST TIME. I BELIEVE THERE IS A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THAT CAR AND NO ONE SHOULD DRIVE IT. I DO NOT WANT TO JEOPARDIZE MY LIFE, MY NEWBORNS LIFE, OR ANYONE ELSE'S LIFE.AOA WILL NOT CHANGE MY CAR FOR A NEW CAR. IT SEEMS TO ME THEY WANT TO RISK HAVING A LAWSUIT AGAINST THEM SHOULD ANYONE GET INJURED OR DIE IF THIS HAPPENS A THIRD TIME. I WANT OUT OF THIS VEHICLE.MILEAGE SHOWS IT HAPPENING 3 TIMES. CAR WILL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY.
