Summary

On October 31 2020, The AC compressor on my vehicle caught fire while I was driving. This caused a foul odorous smoke to fill the cabin of my vehicle which was cough inducing and limited my vision. The air conditioner was not on at this time because of pleasant ambient temperatures outside. I no longer have this part because it was replaced at the dealership along with the serpentine belt that was damaged due to the fire. There was no warning light or noticeable change in the vehicle driving before the incident. I was unaware that I could report this incident until I found this website today.

Summary

I CAN"T REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION WHEN THE CAR IS PUT IN PARK. THIS ISSUE WARRANTS A RECALL. THIS IS CAUSED BY PROBLEMS WITH THE PARK-RANGE SWITCH ACROSS SEVERAL SUBARU MODELS FROM 2012-2018. SUBARU ISSUED SERVICE BULLETIN 16-112-18R REGARDING THIS ON 3/15/18. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE BY OWNERS, DEALERSHIPS AND SUBARU OF AMERICA (SOA). NUMEROUS CAR FORUMS AND BLOGS ADDRESS OWNERS' STEPS TO GET THIS REPAIRED. THE SOLUTIONS OFFERED BY THE DEALERS RANGE FROM ' YOUR CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND IT WILL RUN HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX' TO ' YES THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE BRING IT IN AND WE WILL REPLACE IT NO CHARGE'. SOA'S RESPONSE TO OWNERS VARIED FROM 'WE WILL TAKE CARE IT TO WE'LL HAVE TO SEE IF WE CAN HELP YOU OUT'. MY DEALER'S RESPONSE WAS '$700 TO REPAIR ' YOU MIGHT CALL SOA TO SEE IF THEY CAN HELP OUT.' I DID CALL SOA AND THEY TOLD ME TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER AND LET THEM KNOW WHEN IT WAS ' BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY HELP ON THE COST AT THAT POINT. IT DOES APPEAR THAT SOA WILL COVER THE COST BUT YOU MAY NOT BE TOLD THAT INITIALLY. FORTUNATELY/UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS A QUICK FIX EASILY FOUND ONLINE THAT YOU CAN DO IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES BY DISCONNECTING THE SWITCH TO THE IGNITION. THIS SOLVES THE PROBLEM OF THE STUCK KEY BUT ALSO DISABLES THE CHIME IF YOU LEAVE THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION AND ALSO ALLOWS YOU TO EXIT THE VEHICLE IF THE CAR IS NOT IN PARK. SO NOW, IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL, YOU CAN LOCK YOUR KEYS IN THE CAR AND IF THE CAR IS NOT IN PARK OR THE HAND BREAK IS NOT ENGAGED YOUR CAR WILL ROLL AWAY. I HAVE DONE THE QUICK FIX ' BUT EVEN WITH ALL SORTS OF WAYS TO HELP ME REMEMBER I AM NOT COMFORTABLE.. THIS IS A SAFTEY ISSUE. WHEN I MENTIONED THE FIX TO SOA AS CAUSING A SAFETY ISSUE THEY SAID THAT WAS MY PROBLEM NOT THEIRS. REALLY? MY CAR IS S 2013 AND I WILL NOT COMMIT TO $700 AT THE DEALER WITHOUT KNOWING IF SOA WILL PAY.

THERE IS A LITTLE SPACE BETWEEN THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH AND BRAKE THAT HAS MY BRAKE LIGHTS CONSTANTLY ON. WHILE I AM DRIVING IF I DON'T KEEP MY LEFT FOOT UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL AND PUSHING IT UP THEN THE BRAKE LIGHTS WILL CONSTANTLY BE ON. IF I DON'T KEEP MY FOOT THERE THEN SOMETIMES WHEN I AM GOING UP A HILL OR DRIVING THE CAR WILL DROP RPMS AND THEN I HAVE TO PUT MY FOOT UNDER THE BRAKE AND PUSH IT UP AGAIN. ALSO, WHEN DRIVING THE HILL ASSIST LIGHT, ON THE DASHBOARD WILL TURN ON AND THE CAR WILL ROLL DOWN THE HILL ANY DIRECTION WHEN IN REVERSE OR DRIVE BECAUSE OF THE SWITCH. I HAD GONE TO SUBARU TO DO THE RECALL FOR THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH AND THEN A FEW WEEKS AFTER THIS ISSUE BEGAN TO OCCUR.

Summary

ON TWO OCCASIONS WHILE TRAVELING OVER 70 MPH ON I-26 OUTSIDE OF COLUMBIA, SC THE VEHICLE'S ELECTRIC SYSTEM APPEARED TO MALFUNCTION AND VEHICLE DIED IMMEDIATELY. THE CLOCK, FUEL ECONOMY READINGS, AND RADIO SHUT OFF. THE VEHICLE STALLED AND HAD TO BE MANEUVERED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE INTERSTATE WITH NO ACCELERATION CAPABILITY OR POWER STEERING. THE VEHICLE WAS CAPABLE OF BEING RESTARTED. ON THE FIRST OCCASION, I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND THERE WERE NO FAULTS, ERRORS OR ANYTHING NOTED SO I CONTINUED TO DRIVE, ASSUMING IT WAS A ONE TIME EVENT. THE SECOND TIME, THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED AND THEN A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED. FOLLOWING THE SECOND TIME, CHECK ENGINE ILLUMINATED, AS WELL AS THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT, AND THE CRUISE CONTROL IMAGE WAS BLINKING. PRIOR TO ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS, I WAS HAVING MAY ISSUES ENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL AND TRIED MULTIPLE BUTTON SEQUENCES TO MAKE CRUISE CONTROL WORK. I WAS ABLE TO GET VEHICLE TO AUTOPARTS STORE WHERE CODE READ P0021. TO GET SAFELY HOME, THE AUTOPARTS STORE RECOMMENDED THAT I DO A RESET BY DISCONNECTING BATTERY AND TURNING OFF ALL ELECTRONICS. THIS WORKED AND I HAVE DRIVEN SINCE WITHOUT THE SAME EVENT. THIS COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN FATAL AND MUST BE INVESTIGATED.

Summary

SLOW STARTING WHEN TURNING OVER FROM STOP/PARK/COLD/HOT. EXCESSIVE OIL USE AFTER EACH 3,000 MILES. NO LIGHT WARNING FOR LOW OIL DISPLAYS. ENGINE BOGS OR ALMOST STALLS WHEN GIVING GAS. USUALLY WHEN AIR CONDITIONING IS RUNNING. THIS STARTED TO OCCUR AFTER I HAD THE VALVE SPRING RECALL TAKEN CARE OF. AND ALL IGNITION COILS REPLACED. THE IGNITION COILS CAUSED EXCESSIVE STALLING DOWNHILL TO UPHILL AT VARIOUS SPEEDS YET USUALLY OCCURRED WHEN APPLYING GAS FROM SLOW TO MID-SPEED WHEN APPLYING GAS. MY THOUGHT WERE IT WAS DUE TO THE RECALL BUT EVIDENTLY HAD NOT RELATION. AS PER SUBARU DEALER ON MAUI. REAR WHEEL BEARING REPEATEDLY REPLACE. 3 TIMES IN ONE 1 AND A HALF YEARS. START WITH WITH WINDING NOISE THEN GETS WORSE VERY QUICKLY. WITHIN 1 TO 2 MONTHS. FELT /FEELS VERY UNSAFE. DRIVING AT SLOWER SPEED OKAY AT THE RANGE OF 45-60 MPH NOISE IS VERY PREDOMINATE. THUS REQUIRING TO DRIVE AT SLOWER SPEEDS THAN REQUIRED, I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED. IN THE COURSE OF LESS THAN 2 YEARS I HAVE HAD ALL THESE ISSUES. ALL THESE ISSUES WHERE IN THE COURSE OF BETWEEN 2018 AND 2020.

OUR SUBARU CROSSTREK RECENTLY HAD A SENSOR ISSUE CAUSING THE CAR TO THINK IT WASN'T IN PARK WHEN IT WAS IN FACT IN PARK. THIS CAUSED THE IGNITION TO NOT RELEASE THE KEY PROPERLY, WHICH MEANT YOU COULD NOT LEAVE THE CAR UNLESS YOU LEFT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND DIDN'T LOCK IT. THIS IS APPARENTLY A COMMON PROBLEM ON SUBARUS BASED ON TALKING WITH SERVICE REPS AND SEARCHING THE INTERNET. WHY THIS HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED, I AM NOT SURE. AFTER TAKING MY VEHICLE INTO DEALERSHIP FOR VALVE SPRING RECALL, SERVICE REP ALSO SUGGESTED OIL CHANGE AT SAME TIME. I AGREED. AS SOON AS I DROVE IT OFF THE DEALERSHIP LOT, CHECK OIL LIGHT CAME ON. I IMMEDIATELY RETURNED CAR TO HAVE IT CHECKED BUT DEALERSHIP SAID OIL WAS FULL, PROBABLY FAULTY SENSOR AND SENT ME AWAY WITHOUT FULLY CHECKING THE CAR. CHECK OIL LIGHT WOULD INTERMITTENTLY LIGHT UP WHEN DRIVING LOCALLY. THEN ENGINE TAPPING SOUND AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED A FEW WEEKS LATER WHILE DRIVING LOCALLY BUT INDICATOR LIGHTS WOULD TURN OFF FOR SHORT PERIODS IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING CAR, OR WHILE DRIVING UP OR DOWN STEEP INCLINES. LOCAL MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT OIL PRESSURE WAS LOW AND RECOMMENDED TAKING IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP. ANOTHER DEALERSHIP IS NOW DISASSEMBLING THE ENGINE AND RECOMMENDING A NEW ENGINE AS OIL PRESSURE IS LOW AND NOT CIRCULATING PROPERLY AFTER VALVE SPRING RECALL REPAIR.

MY SUBARU DEALER COMPLETED 2 RECALL ITEMS ON 7/24/2019 - 8/1/2019 ON MY 2013 SUBARU CROSSTREK.THE ENGINE VALVE SPRINGS AND BREAK LIGHT SWITCH. AFTER WORK WAS COMPLETED, ON 8/1/2019 I HAD MY BUMPER REPLACED FROM A REAR-END ACCIDENT I EXPERIENCED ON 7/16 (POSSIBLE BREAK LIGHT SWITCH MALFUNCTION-- IT WAS THE THIRD TIME I HAVE BEEN REAR-ENDED IN THIS CAR SINCE PURCHASE). 8/7/2019 I PICKED UP MY CAR FROM THE AUTOBODY SHOP AND DROVE 2 MI. HOME AND PARKED WITH NO ISSUE. 8/8/2019 I DROVE 35 MI. ONE WAY TO WORK WITHOUT INCIDENT... **RETURNING HOME, I DROVE ROUGHLY 25-MILES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 45-70MPH, AND 5-MILES IN LIGHT, STOP-AND-GO TRAFFIC. 30-MILES INTO MY TRIP AT AROUND 5-15MPH MY CAR BEGAN TO SHAKE AND VIBRATE, I CONTINUED TO DRIVE, TRAVELING SLOWLY, TRYING TO DISCERN IF THE SHAKING WAS COMING FROM MY CAR OR FROM ONE OF MY TIRES. ALL OF A SUDDEN ALL OF MY ERROR LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON MY DASHBOARD AND MY ENGINE LOST POWER AND STALLED OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY (THE LIGHTS AND STEREO WERE STILL ON). WITH NO OTHER OPTIONS, I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE SO I COULD PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. UPON DRIVING, MY CAR CONTINUED TO SHUDDER AND VERY LITTLE POWER TO ACCELERATE. IT STALLED AGAIN WITH 30 SEC. OF DRIVING. I WAS ALONE AND SCARED AND DIDN'T WANT TO SIT ON THE HIGHWAY, SO I RESTARTED MY ENGINE AND DROVE THE SHOULDER TO TRY TO REACH THE DEALERSHIP (.5 MI. AWAY) MY CAR CONTINUED TO SHAKE, HAVE NO POWER AND STALLED ANOTHER THREE TIMES AS DROVE TO REACH IT. THE DEALERSHIP DID A DIAGNOSTIC BLAMED THE "ENGINE STALL-OUT" I EXPERIENCED ON MY BUMPER REPLACEMENT, AND GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $889.00 TO FIX, WHICH IS [XXX]! THIS ENGINE STALL FROM THE RECALL REPAIR PUT ME IN EXTREME DANGER, I WAS ALONE AND TERRIFIED WHEN IT HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY, AND NOW I AM BEING RIPPED OFF BY THE COMPANY IN CHARGE OF FIXING IT. ITS NOT RIGHT. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

THIS CAR HAS HAD ISSUES SINCE THE 1ST WEEK, RECALLS, BROKEN PARTS, WARNING LIGHTS ON AND BAD ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THERE ARE 2 CURRENT RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE, 1 OF WHICH SUBARU DOESN'T HAVE A FIX FOR. I TRIED TO BE NICE, BUT THEY SAID IT WILL TAKE 2-3 MONTHS TO FIX THE VALVE SPRINGS BECAUSE THEY ARE BEHIND. THEY OFFERED A ENTERPRISE RENTAL CAR WHICH IS KIND, BUT THE DRIVER OF THIS CAR IS 21 AND CAN'T USE THE RENTAL. THEY SAID THAT IS MY PROBLEM. LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT, I BOUGHT A CAR IN GOOD FAITH, PAID THE BANK AND GOT THE CAR SERVICED AS SUGGESTED AND NOW THIS IS MY PROBLEM. THIS IS WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS. I ASKED FOR A LOANER THAT MY 21 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER CAN DRIVE AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE NONE. THEY SAID THEY ARE 50-60 CARS BEHIND IN THE CUE FOR THIS RECALL. IT'S A HUGE PROJECT AND VERY FEW MECHANICS CAN DO IT. SO I AM FACED WITH THE DILEMMA OF HAVING MY DAUGHTER DRIVE THIS RECALLED DANGEROUS VEHICLE FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS UNTIL SUBARU GETS THEIR ACT TOGETHER, OR HAVE HER DRIVE RENTAL ILLEGALLY, OR SELL IT. SUBARU HAS OFFERED $1000 OFF A NEW CROSSTREK IF WE TRADE THIS IN. $1000 IS A JOKE IN MY OPINION. THIS FEELS LIKE A SCAM. PLEASE LMK IF I HAVE ANY COURSE OF ACTION OTHER THAN THE TERRIBLE OPTIONS I CURRENTLY FACE. THANKS, RANDY

SUBARU SENT OUT A RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE RECALL # WTY-84 IN THE LETTER THEY STATE THAT THE ENGINE MAY STALL WHILE DRIVING AND CAUSING AN INCREASED RISK OF A CRASH. WHEN I CALLED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP THEY TOLD ME THE FIRST APPOINTMENT THEY HAVE TO RESOLVE THIS WAS ON FEB 12, 2020. FINDING THIS COMPLETELY UNSATISFACTORY FOR A COMPANY TO EXPECT ITS CUSTOMERS TO DRIVE A CAR THEY ARE TELLING US IS A DEATH TRAP. I CALLED MAIL OFFICE SUBARU TO ASK WHAT THE SITUATION WAS. THEY CLAIMED THAT ANOTHER DEALER IN MY AREA WAS ABLE TO SCHEDULE FOR THIS MARCH/APRIL THEY ALSO STATED THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO RENT A VEHICLE FREE OF CHARGE UNTIL MY CAR WAS REPAIRED IF I WAS NOT FEELING GOOD ABOUT DRIVING IT. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THAT WAS NOT THE CASE - THEY HAVE 100 PEOPLE ON THEIR WAITING LIST AND NO PARTS ARE EVEN AVAILABLE LET FROM SUBARU TO START FIXING ANY CARS - AND THEY DO NOT HAVE A PROGRAM TO GIVE ANY ONE RENTAL CARS WHILE WE WAIT. EVEN IF I NOW WANTED TO TRADE MY CAR I COULD NOT AS NO OTHER COMPANY IS TO BUY A CAR FROM ME THAT HAS A RECALL ON IT THAT CANNOT BE FIXED FOR A YEAR AND IS A DEATH TRAP.

65000 MILES JUST OVER THE WARRANTY I HAD TO REPLACE BOTH 2 AXELS AND 2 CV JOINTS AND $4000 LATER I AM TOLD WE HAVE TO NOW REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE IT STALLED OUT SLIPPED WHILE I WAS TRYING TO TURN ONTO A BUSY ROAD WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED AT 46000 MILES FOR 17200 IN JULY 2017. I DIDN'T THINK THESE TYPES OF PROBLEMS EXISTED IN LOW MILEAGE CARS. I'VE OWNED A VOLVO I DROVE FOR 164,000 MILES NEVER HAD TO REPLACE AN AXEL OR TRANSMISSION, MY HONDA CR-V I DROVE FOR OVER 100,000 MILES WITH NO ISSUES AT ALL. I WANTED A SUBARU BECAUSE I HEARD GREAT THINGS ABOUT THEM I THOUGHT I DID MY RESEARCH DIDN'T THINK I'D BE PAYING LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY TO FIX IT WHILE I WAS STILL PAYING A CAR PAYMENT ON THE THING. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED AND SCARED FOR THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY CHILDREN BUT WHO HAS ANOTHER $3000 TO THROW INTO A CAR THAT I ALREADY PUT $4000 INTO NOT TO MENTION THE $10,000 I STILL OWE ON IT. THOUGHT I WAS MAKING AN INVESTMENT INSTEAD I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR AND DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX IT AND SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED. I CONTACTED SUBARU CUSTOMER SERVICE BECAUSE I READ IN FOR A MAGAZINE THAT THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE CONTINUOUS VARIABLE TRANSMISSIONS IN MY MAKE AND MODEL HOWEVER I CANT FIND IT STATED ON ANY SUBARU WEBSITE OR WHEN I SEARCH THE VIN NUMBER. Summary

MY 2013 SUBARU XV CROSSTREK WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW IN SEPTEMBER 2013. WITHIN 65K MILES I HAD TO REPLACE THE CV JOINT ON BOTH FRONT WHEELS (ISSUE WAS INDICATED BY A CLICKING SOUND FROM THE WHEEL WHEN TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT). AGAIN, AT AROUND 120K MILES I HAD TO REPLACE THEM BOTH, AND NOW, A THIRD TIME AT 182K MILES. AFTER DOING MUCH RESEARCH THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE ON THE XV CROSSTREK THAT IS NOT RELATED TO DRIVING CONDITIONS, ROAD CONDITIONS, OR DUE TO PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE PART OR VEHICLE. EACH OF THE TIMES THE CV JOINT WAS REPLACED THE BOOT WAS INTACT, WHICH INDICATES THAT IT IS A FAULTY PART OR ASSEMBLY RATHER THAN DAMAGE OCCURRING TO THE WHEEL. EACH OF THESE REPAIRS COSTS APPROXIMATELY $500 AT THE DEALERSHIP (PER WHEEL) AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS SHOULD REQUIRE SUBARU OF AMERICA TO VOLUNTARILY RECALL OR REPAIR THIS PART FREE OF CHARGE. ADDITIONALLY, IF THIS PART FAILS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, SEVERE TRANSMISSION DAMAGE WILL RESULT AND AN ACCIDENT IS LIKELY. MY EXPERIENCE WITH MY FIRST SUBARU HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT EXPENSIVE, AND BURDENSOME REPAIRS TO A CAR WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE "LOWEST COST OF OWNERSHIP" AS THEY ADVERTISE TO CONSUMERS.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE CHECK ENGINE AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON. I HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC CODE READER WHICH SENT THE DETAILS TO MY PHONE DTC P1449 EVAP SYSTEM CLOG DETECTED (AIR FILTER). I CALLED MY MECHANIC WHO SAID IT WOULD BE SAFE TO DRIVE HOME...WHILE DRIVING HOME IN THE RAIN I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND WENT OFF THE ROAD. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT. WHEN I GOT HOME, MY MECHANIC SAID IT WAS A FAULTY PURGE VALVE WHICH WOULD NORMALLY BE A SIMPLE FIX BUT THE ISSUE WAS WELL KNOWN WITH THE VEHICLE AND WAS NOW A SUPERSEDED PART. THE COST WOULD QUADRUPLE BECAUSE THE CHECK ASSEMBLY WAS COMPLETELY REDESIGNED AND SEVERAL PARTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IF THIS WAS SUCH A KNOWN ISSUE, WHICH REQUIRED A REDESIGN OF THE SYSTEM, WHY ISNT IT ON RECALL!!! ESPECIALLY, IF THE COMPUTER TAKES AWAY THE VEHICLE'S SAFETY FEATURES LIKE TRACTION CONTROL. COME ON SUBARU. I EXPECT BETTER QUALITY AND SERVICE! NHTSA PLEASE ESCALATE THESE MATTERS.

CV JOINT & FRONT AXEL I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY FRONT AXELS TWICE NOW IN MY CROSSTREK. ONCE AT 36K MILES AND AGAIN AT 59K. BOTH TIMES I DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE WHEN I HEARD A CLICKING NOISE ON SHARP TURNS. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIR AT THE DEALERSHIP ON BOTH OCCASIONS AS WELL. THE CROSSTREK ONLINE FORUMS HAVE LISTED MANY STORIES LIKE MINE, WITH PEOPLE REPORTING THE SAME ISSUE OF NEEDING TO REPLACE THEIR AXELS PREMATURELY. THE AVERAGE LIFESPAN OF AN AXEL IS NORMALLY CLOSER TO 100K+ MILES. I DO NOT OFF ROAD, I DRIVE CITY STREETS AT THE SPEED LIMIT. I SEE NO OTHER REASON FOR THIS ISSUE OTHER THAN POOR DESIGN/DEFECT.

Summary

I BOUGHT MY 2013 SUBARU XV CROSSTREK IN NOV 2012 AS A RESULT OF REVIEWING SUBARU'S HIGH SAFETY RATING AND READING THEIR SYMMETRICAL ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM. I STILL ENJOY THE CAR VERY MUCH AND HAVE DRIVEN ABOUT 86,640 MILES. I SERVICED MY CAR AT MY LOCAL SUBARU DEALER TO STAY ON TOP OF THE MANUFACTURER' RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE. HOWEVER, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT 2 PROBLEMS I ENCOUNTERED.IN THE LAST 9 MONTHS. AT 58,223 MILES (JUNE 2015) I TOOK MY CAR TO INTO THE DEALER FOR ITS ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION. I EXPLAINED I'VE BEEN HEARING A CLICKING NOISE IN THE FRONT WHEN TURNING LEFT. AFTER THEIR INSPECTION OF THE PROBLEM, THEY EXPLAINED THAT THE LEFT FRONT AXLE HAS A TORN BOOT. FORTUNATELY, MY WARRANTY COVERED THE REPLACEMENT AXLE. IN MAR 2016 (AT APPROXIMATELY 86K MILES ON THE ODOMETER) I HEARD A SIMILAR CLICKING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR WHEN TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE. THIS TIME IT WAS MY RIGHT AXLE THAT HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A WORN OUT JOINT AT THE WHEEL END OF MY RIGHT AXLE. I HAVE NEVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH A BROKEN AXLE AND ESPECIALLY 2 BROKEN AXLES. I USED TO DRIVE A TOYOTA 4 RUNNER 2 WHEEL DRIVE AND DROVE IT ABOUT 310K MILES. I PASSED IT TO MY SON SINCE IT STILL RUNS WELL AND NEVER BROKE AN AXLE. I DECIDED TO REVIEW MY SERVICE RECORD BACK IN JUNE 2014 AGAIN FOR THE LEFT BROKEN AXLE AND IT STATES "VERIFIED CONCERN FOUND NOISE COMING FROM LEFT FRONT AXLE NO BOOTS TORN. PRIOR TO THIS, I TEXTED MY SERVICE PERSON AND ASKED WHAT BOOT WAS TORN, NOT KNOWING MY SERVICE RECORDS SAYS NO BOOTS WERE TORN. I WAS TOLD HE WOULD CHECK AND GET BACK TO ME. MEANWHILE, I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT BOTH AXLES BROKE ON A NEW CAR AND NOW LEARNED THAT OTHER DRIVERS EXPERIENCED SIMIILAR AXLE REPLACEMENTS. THE 2ND ISSUE IS THAT THE REAR END OF THE CAR ABRUPTLY KICKS TO THE RIGHT WHEN DRIVING OVER ICE ABOVE 45MPH.

TWO CONCERNS. PURCHASED VEHICLE NEW MARCH 2013. 5000 MILES LATER CHECK OIL LIGHT ILLUMINATED. HAD TO ADD 1 QT. OIL. WENT TO DEALER TO INQUIRE. SAID THEY HAD TO MONITOR. CONTINUALLY HAPPENED AT 5000. FIRST SAID I HAD A FAULTY OIL SENSOR (RECALL). THOUGHT THAT WAS ODD SINCE IT ONLY HAPPENED WHEN THE OIL WAS LOW. THEN AFTER MONITORING DEALER SAID OIL CONSUMPTION WAS NORMAL. SECOND PROBLEM. AT 71000 MILES HEARD TICKING NOISE IN FRONT LEFT. DEALER SAID NEEDED TO REPLACE LEFT AXLE. POSSIBLE CAUSE ROUGH ROAD CONDITIONS. AT 75000 MILES HEARD SAME NOISE ON RIGHT SIDE. DEALER MECHANIC SAID DUE TO HIGH MILEAGE IT WAS NORMAL FOR THE AXLE TO LOSE GREASE AND FAIL. FOUND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT WAS NORMAL FOR BOTH AXLES TO FAIL AT 71000-75000 MILES. I WOULDN'T CONSIDER THAT HIGH MILEAGE NOR WOULD I CONSIDER IT NORMAL FOR AXLES TO FAIL. SPOKE WITH THEIR CUSTOMER RELATIONS 1-800-SUBARU3 CASE #1-10733639056. I PAID $628.00 TO REPLACE FIRST AXLE. THEY AGREED TO PAY FOR SECOND AXLE. THEY SAID THEY WERE ONLY REPLACING IT BECAUSE I WAS A GOOD CUSTOMER AND A GESTURE OF GOOD WILL. NOT BECAUSE THE AXLES WERE FAULTY. I WOULDN'T CONSIDER MYSELF A GOOD CUSTOMER SINCE THIS IS THE ONLY SUBARU I HAVE EVER PURCHASED AND IT HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT A PROBLEM.

INTERSECTION OF AIRPORT BLVD AND SCOTT ST. IN HOUSTON. BETWEEN 545 TO 6 PM WAS THE INCIDENT. WEATHER WAS PERFECT. BETWEEN 70 TO 75 DEGREES. BRIGHT AND CLEAR CONDITIONS. I WAS COMING FROM THE EAST SIDE OF AIRPORT BLVD TOWARDS THE SOUTH SIDE OF SCOTT. THIS ROAD WAS A 35 MPH ROAD. AS I TURNED LEFT SEEING THAT THE OTHER SIDE WAS CLEAR, I STARTED MOVING AND I GOT HIT BY A DODGE DURANNGO WHO WAS SPEEDING UP AT MAYBE 60-70 MPH. I SURVIVED THE ACCIDENT BUT BASED ON PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT, MY CAR WAS DECLARED TOTALED. THE IMPACT WAS SO STRONG. THE OTHER DRIVER WERE GIVEN VARIOUS CITATIONS BY THE POLICE AND WAS DETERMINED TO BE AT FAULT. HE WAS ALSO DRIVING WITHOUT AN INSURANCE AND A LICENSE. I HOWEVER FELT AGGRIEVED KNOWING THAT MY CAR WAS TOTALED AND I SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES. I HOWEVER WAS SHOCKED THAT DESPITE THE STRONG IMPACT OF THE COLLISION, NONE OF THE AIRBAGS WERE DEPLOYED. I CAN PROVIDE PHOTOS IF NEEDED. THE IMPACTED SIDE WAS ON THE FRONT SIDE AND AS I WAS NAVIGATING SUBARU'S WEBSITE, IT LOOKS LIKE THEY HAD RECALL OF THEIR 2004 TO 2005 VEHICLES FOR ISSUES OF AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOYING ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THIS IS WHERE I ABSORBED A STRONG IMPACT ON MY CAR AND I HAVE A SUSPICION THAT I HAVE A SIMILAR CASE. SUBARU CROSSTREK 2013 WAS I THINK THEIR FIRST RELEASE OF THIS MODEL SO THERE ARE NOT MANY STUDIES OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS VEHICLE. I DEMAND FOR AN INVESTIGATION. WE WENT SKIING WITH OUR KIDS LAST SATURDAY. THERE WAS AN ICE STORM THE NIGHT BEFORE AND THE ROADS WERE BAD. WE WERE TRAVELING ABOUT 50 MILES. I HAVE DRIVEN ICY ROADS MY WHOLE LIFE AND HAVE OWNED SEVERAL SUBARUS. AT ANY SPEED OVER 45 MPH THE BACK END WOULD KICK SIDEWAYS. I COULD TELL BY THE OTHER CAR'S ON THE ROAD THAT DAY THAT MY PROBLEM WAS UNIQUE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WITH DRIVERS THAT ARE NOT USED TO WINTER DRIVING. WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR THEY TOLD ME TO ROTATE THE TIRES AT THE CORRECT INTERVALS BECAUSE THE COMPUTER WILL ADJUST THE SPEED OF THE TIRES SEPARATELY. I THINK THE COMPUTER ADJUSTMENTS ARE THE PROBLEM. IT MUST BE ABLE TO TELL IF IS SLIPPING AND ADJUST THE SPEED OF THE REAR TIRE AND KICK IT SIDEWAYS. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL HOW MANY CAR ACCIDENTS HAVE HAPPENED BECAUSE OF THIS. A SMALL AMOUNT OF RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET REVEALED THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR

THE VEHICLE HAS A CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION. WHEN APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT OR STOP SIGN I REMOVE MY FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL AND THEN THE VEHICLE STARTS TO SLOW DOWN. WHEN THE ENGINE RPM'S REACH AROUND 1400 RPM THE VEHICLE QUITS SLOWING DOWN AND CONTINUES FORWARD AT WHAT EVER SPEED IT IS AT. THE CAR MAY NOT BE ACCELERATING BUT IT FEELS LIKE IT IS BECAUSE IT QUITS SLOWING DOWN. IF I TOUCH THE BRAKE A BIT THE ENGINE AGAIN SLOWS DOWN UNTIL IT REACHES THE IDLE RPM OF ABOUT 750. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I HAVE HAD TO QUICKLY HIT THE BRAKES TO AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FROM OF ME. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN MINNESOTA AND NOTICED THE PROBLEM WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK BUT DIDN'T PURSUE IT UNTIL I GOT TO TEXAS AS THIS IS WHERE THE VEHICLE WILL BE KEPT. THE TEXAS SUBARU SERVICE FOUND NO DIAGNOSTIC CODES AND DROVE THE VEHICLE WITH ME AND NOTICED WHAT I DID. THE TEXAS SUBARU SERVICE MANAGER HAD ME DRIVE A 2014 AND IT DOES THE SAME THING BUT SEEMS TO START SLOWING DOWN AGAIN ONCE IT HAS DONE THE ACCELERATION AT 1400 RPM FOR A SECOND OR TWO. THEY OPENED A TECH LINE CASE FILE BUT SAY THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THEY CAN DO. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT, MAYBE NOT FOR ME AS I NOW KEEP MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE WHENEVER SLOWING DOWN, BUT CERTAINLY FOR OTHERS. *TR

MY WIFE AND I USED TO LOVE THIS CAR BUT......WHILE DRIVING MY RELATIVELY NEW 2013 CROSSTREK 11,000 MILES FROM WISCONSIN TO DETROIT TO ATTEND THE WINTER HOCKEY CLASSIC HAD REPEATED PROBLEMS WITH GHOSTWALKING. THE CAR HANDLED SLIGHTLY BETTER. BUT EACH TIME WE GOT UP TO SPEEDS OVER 40 MPH THE CAR WOULD TRY TO TURN ABRUPTLY WHENEVER WE WENT UNDER OR OVER AN OVERPASS ON A STRAIGHTAWAY....VERY NERVE RACKING. ENDED UP BAILING OUT IN A HOTEL IN TOLEDO UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING WHEN THE ROADS WERE MOSTLY BARE AND DRY. I AM VERY FAMILIAR AND LIKE THE FEELING OF THE AWD KICKING IN TO ENHANCE THE TRACTION AND CONTROL OF THE CAR. IN THIS SITUATION IT FEELS LIKE THE AWD IS KICKING IN AND TRYING TO TURN THE CAR ANYTIME THERE IS A SLIGHT SLICK SPOT. DID CHECK TO SEE IF THE CAR WOULD TRY TO DRIFT LEFT OR RIGHT ON A DRY FLAT STRAIGHTAWAY (GOES STRAIGHT). I AM HOPING THE PROBLEM IS RELATED TO A REAR END ALIGNMENT ISSUE BUT DISCONCERTED BY MY CAR WHICH FEELS DANGEROUS WHEN I MOST NEED IT TO BE RELIABLE. VERY SIMILAR COMPLAINT DESCRIPTIONS ON THIS WEBSITE FOR OUTBACKS DESCRIBED AS GHOSTWALKING. *TR
