Engine stalled at low speed. Was able to restart engine. Check engine light was on so was able to drive it to dealer. Dealer determined it was hpfp failure, with metal shards in fuel line, so entire fuel system replaced (injectors, lines, hpfp, etc). Hpfp was replaced with the same model that failed, just a new one. A while later, engine stalled again at low speed. No check engine light but was able to restart engine. Dealer notified of stall post-fix of entire fuel system. A while later engine stalled a 3rd time while driving around 40 mph. No check engine light Was advised that there was a recall for a newly designed hpfp but not in stock at dealer yet. Eventually had the newly redesigned hpfp installed under recall. A few weeks later, experienced another stall while idling at a red light. Amazingly was able to get a real-time video of the engine stalling and shutting off. No check engine light. Was unable to restart engine after multiple tries but engine finally fired up on the 5th or 6th or 7th attempt at restarting. Was able to pull over to the side of the road and notified dealer that I experienced another engine stall after installation of the newly designed recalled hp fuel pump.. Took the car into the dealer and showed them the real Time video of my engine stalling and dealer sent diagnostics to BMW North America but Was advised that BMW engineers were unable to replicate or to find the problem that caused the engine stall. Full credit to local BMW dealer that has always tried their best to help me find and fix the problem but the engine stalling randomly is a life or death kind of malfunction. After 4 engine stalls including after a replacement of a recalled brand new design part, I'm hoping BMW North America can work with me towards a solution and not have to wait till a catastrophic accident before a remedy is offered.

My vehicle was part of a recall No. 21V-586. I was told I have metal shavings in the fuel system coming from the high pressure fuel pump and given a price to repair of $17,200.00. I first looked on line and found my make, model and year was part of a recall for this exact same issue I informed the dealership of the recall. The contacted BMW and they stated they would not cover the repairs because now they are saying it was bad fuel. I stated if bad fuel then we treat it and nothing should be wrong with the pump. This went on for a couple week then I requested a BMW come to the dealership to inspect. After this visit it was agreed they would replace the high pressure fuel pump and nothing else. After fighting them and telling them if the metal shavings in the system is from a recalled part then why are they not correcting the entire issue. I then received an email later with repairs listed and it show hoses and filters and new fuel and no charge. I assumed they replace the entire fuel system to get rid of the metal shavings. I went pick up the vehicle and was told that there are still metal shavings in the system to be careful as the vehicle may shut off without warning. I asked how BMW could give a car back that they did not fix the problem and may cause a crash. They had no answer. I now have a car that I really can't drive and has no value. I have had to purchase another car thus incurred additional and unwanted expense due to BMW's refusal to correct a manufacturer's defect. Why is it my responsibility to pay to have the metal shavings from their recalled fuel pump removed from the fuel system. If they can't fix the problem then I should be reimbursed for the car's value by BMW and not have it available to be on the road and cause an unnecessary accident. I am asking for your help in dealing with BMW to rectify this matter as they are unwilling to deal with me. My husband was driving 20-25 mph and heard a loud "boom" - then his engine compartment began smoking. We had the vehicle towed to the BMW dealership. A rod was thrown through the engine compartment and the engine needed to be replaced. We are the original owners of the vehicle and service it regularly. There were no leaks, noises, lights, nor any other indications of trouble prior to the engine blowing up.

BMW has recalled these in all of the 2014-2018 diesel engines, but it appears the high-pressure fuel pumps are also failing in the gasoline engines, of which I own.

Started my car like normal and ran for 30 seconds after leaving Walmart after I picked up a few things then the car shut off out of no where.. attempted to start again and the car tried to turn over then even stopped doing that after a few attempts.. I had the car towed to my home.. my husband then inspected the vehicle and the high pressure fuel pump has failed causing my engine to lock up.. I have maintained this vehicle like I should because I loved my car and my husband is a mechanic.. This vehicle only with 127000.. this should of not happened I have read bmw is going to recall this but when my vin is ran nothing shows up.. I owe on this vehicle still and it really has put me in a bind financially with having to miss work and having to find other transportation.. this is ridiculous. I got no warning lights or any noise warnings.

Drove car after it sat for a few days. Got about a mile from my home and thought I smelled some smoke. Rolled down windows to make sure it was not outside (was in rural area). It was not. Went another mile and pulled over. Seemed to be a small amount of smoke coming out near vent and near seatbelt uprights near door. Looked under hood and under car and saw nothing. Opened sunroof to determine if there was more smoke and to clear the air. It looked like there was a small amount of smoke coming out where the sunroof opened. NOTE: It was hot out and I had put A/C on max. I let car sit a few minutes (was running) and seemed like issue might be gone. Decided best course of action was to drive it the few miles back home and maybe get it towed. Started back toward home and now there was definitely noticeable smoke. Also started to get odd messages on the dash and operator interface. Pulled over immediately and turned off. Smoke seemingly coming from the body of the car (like in the doors, in gaps in the sunroof, through the seatbelt holders, etc.) Definitely seemed as though a blower motor, window motor or some other device overheated. There was the smell of plastic/rubber burning. Went behind the car and opened the tail. I lifted the mat in the back and it seemed hot. Then could see red/yellow through a gap. Not sure if flames or something hot. Decided to grab important items and call 911. Car was in flames with seconds. Car was a complete loss. No doubt in my mind that it was electrical. Was not engine, transmission or exhaust related.

THE SALESMEN STATED HE COULDN'T REALLY TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT THE SUVS FEATURES, BECAUSE HE ONLY KNOWS ABOUT TOYOTAS. THE SUV I WAS INTERESTED IN, JUST SO HAPPENS TO BE THE BMW X5 THAT WAS THERE. I LOOKED OVER EVERYTHING AS FAR AS THE LITTLE KNOWLEDGE I HAVE ABOUT THE FUNCTIONING FEATURES OF THE SUV AND CAME ACROSS AN ISSUE WITH THE BACK UP CAMERA IMAGE NOT APPEARING WHEN U SHIFT THE CAR INTO REVERSE. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE NEW WAY THE IMAGES APPEARS, WITH JUST THE CAR POPS UP BUT THE IMAGES OF THE ACTUAL SURROUNDINGS BEHIND SHOWS JUST A BLACK SCREEN. I ASKED TOYOTA IF THEY CAN HELP ME FIND FIX THIS PROBLEM, AS I JUST GOT THE TRUCK AND WITHOUT KNOWING THE REVERSE CAMERA JUST SO HAPPEN NOT TO WORK, I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED IT. AFTER THE INSPECTION, THEY TELL ME THAT A LEAK WAS DISCOVERED AND THAT IT WAS FIXED. BUT NOTHING WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE WATER GOT INTO THE CAR. THEY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH OLDER MODELS AND DUE TO IT BEING A BAD DESIGN OF THE CAR, REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IT WAS THEIR PROBLEM. I READ THAT THERE WAS A SETTLEMENT BACK IN 2010 AREA AND THAT THEY WERE FOUND LIABLE. THE CAR HAS NOT CHANGED SINCE THEN AND THEY ARE STILL USING THE FLAWED CAR DESIGN IN THE X5. I WAS TOLD THAT TO AVOID FURTHER LEAKS, THAT I SHOULD NOT PARK IT ANYWHERE NEAR TREES OR BUSHES AND PREFERABLY INSIDE. I WAS THE SOLE PASSENGER AND WAS NOT INJURED. AT NO TIME WAS THERE A LOSS OF CONTROL. I PULL OVER TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE TO REVIEW THE DAMAGE TO THE MOONROOF AND REST OF THE CAR. IT APPEARED THAT THE DAMAGE WAS CONTAINED TO THE CENTER SECTION OF THE MOONROOF. TO PREVENT ADDITIONAL SHARDS OF GLASS FROM FALLING INTO THE VEHICLE, I CLOSED THE INTERNAL SHADE OF THE MOONROOF, WHICH HAS BEEN OPEN WHEN THE GLASS BROKE APART. I DID NOT DETECT ANY EXTERNAL OBJECT HITTING THE VEHICLE AND CAN ONLY PRESUME THAT THE BREAKAGE WAS TOTALLY SPONTANEOUS. ALSO, WHILE THERE IS A BMW ROOF RACK ON THE CAR, I WAS NOT CARRY ANY SPORTS EQUIPMENT AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. THERE ARE TWO SADDLES ON THE RACK FOR CARRYING A KAYAK. I DID NOT CONTACT ANY EMERGENCY OR POLICE. I HAVE NOT SEEN A NEED TO FILE AN ACCIDENT REPORT WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES. I CONTINUED ONWARD TO AN APPOINTMENT AT A NEARBY LOCATION OUTSIDE OF FALL RIVER AND THEN RETURNED HOME ABOUT AN HOUR LATER. MY REASSESSMENT OF THE DAMAGE WHEN I GOT HOME WAS THE SAME AS THE INITIAL INCIDENT. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND AM AWAITING A REVIEW BY AN ADJUSTER. THE DASH INDICATED A DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION AND THE ENGINE COMPLETELY DIED. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THIS CAR HAS A TRANSMISSION LOCK TO PREVENT TWO-WHEEL TOWING THAT MAKES IT NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. WE ARE LEFT SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF A DARK ROAD AROUND A BLIND CURVE AND NO WAY TO MOVE THE CAR, AND A FLAT-BED TOW TRUCK WOULD NOT ARRIVE FOR HOURS. BMW HAS DIAGNOSED A HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE THAT SENT METAL FRAGMENTS THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM INCLUDING INJECTORS MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $14,000. I HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS SAME CAR HAD THE SAME REPAIR SIX MONTHS EARLIER BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER. THIS CAR HAS SUFFERED TWO CATASTROPHIC FUEL SYSTEM FAILURES RESULTING IN DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS BEING STRANDED IN VERY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS THIS YEAR ALONE. HAD THIS HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY AT HIGH SPEED, IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT WITH SUBSTANTIAL INJURIES OR EVEN DEATH AS A RESULT. A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH REVEALS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE X5 DIESEL HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WITH MANY OWNERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY REPORTING SIMILAR PROBLEMS, SOME OF WHOM STATE FEELING LUCKY TO HAVE ESCAPED WITHOUT INJURY. I WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER THINKING THIS WOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY - THE CAR IS LESS THAN 3 YEARS OLD! I'M TOLD THAT THERE WAS A "CATASTROPHIC FAILURE" OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP THAT I DID NOT CAUSE, HAD NO WARNING OF AND COULD NOT HAVE PREVENTED. THAT FAILURE CAUSED METAL SHAVINGS TO BREAK OFF, DAMAGE THE FUEL INJECTORS AND SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM REQUIRING REPLACEMENT AT THE COST OF $15,000! I WAS THEN TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE OF THE MILEAGE (I DRIVE MY SONS TO LOTS OF BASEBALL TOURNAMENTS SO I AM OVER 50K MILES AFTER THIS SUMMER). I ASKED BMW NA TO STAND BEHIND THEIR VEHICLE AND REPAIR IT UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE NO 2.5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY A BMW, SHOULD HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO IT. INDEED, A PUMP FAILURE, NO MATTER HOW CATASTROPHIC, SHOULD NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. THERE ARE LAWSUITS OUT THERE OVER THESE HPFPS AND BMW HAS RECALLED OVER 150,000 VEHICLES AND EXTENDED THE WARRANTIES ON MANY OF THE HPFPS TO 120K, BUT APPARENTLY NOT MINE, EVEN THOUGH IT EXPERIENCED THE SAME TYPE OF FAILURE, IS MADE BY THE SAME COMPANY (BOSCH) AND OUT OF THE SAME MATERIAL (DIFFERENT PART NUMBER). FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT IS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY WITHIN THE B PILLAR CAUSING THE BELT TO BE TWISTED AND INTERFERES WITH THE SPEED AND TOTALITY OF THE BELT'S RETRACTION. I NOTED THIS TO THE SALESMAN AT NEW VEHICLE DELIVERY AND WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT A SAFETY CONCERN AND THAT THEY'D FIX IT AT THE NEXT SERVICE APPOINTMENT. AT THE SERVICE APPOINTMENT, I COMPLAINED AGAIN ABOUT THE TWISTED SEAT BELT AND WAS FIRST ACCUSED OF TWISTING THE SEAT BELT. THE BMW TECHS ATTEMPTED TO "UNTWIST" THE SEAT BELT AND TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD FIXED IT. UPON RETURN OF THE VEHICLE, THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT STOPPED RETRACTING PROPERLY AND IS STILL TWISTED. THIS DEFECT APPLIES TO ALL STATES OF VEHICLE OPERATION AND DEALER HAS FAILED TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION ON TWO OCCASIONS. I DO NOT TRUST THE SEAT BELT WAS ENGINEERED TO WITHSTAND AN ACCIDENT WHILE INSTALLED BACKWARDS AND CERTAINLY NOT WITH A FOLDED/TWISTED/KINKED BELT. I NOW BELIEVE THIS TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE BMW HAS FAILED TO RECTIFY THIS FACTORY DEFECT WHICH SEEMS TO CREASE AND CAUSE IRREPARABLE HARM TO THE SEAT BELT, BEING RETRACTED IN SUCH A STATE. THE SPEED METER ALSO FAILED AND IT SHOWED 0 AND EVEN THOUGH WHEN I WAS DRIVING. OTHER FAILURES INCLUDE HEADLIGHT AND TURNING LIGHT. THE RIGHT TURNING WOULD ALWAYS TURN ITSELF ON NO MATTER WHAT. I WAS ABLE TO PARK MY CAR IN A SAFE LOCATION BUT THIS REALLY SCARED THE SH*T OUT OF ME. WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE AND THE STOP ENGINE BUTTON, THE CAR DIDN'T EVEN SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE. OTHER FAILURES INCLUDE TPM MALFUNCTION, PARKING BRAKE REDUCED, PARKING ASSISTANT MALFUNCTION AND HEADLAMP VERTICAL AIM CONTROL MALFUNCTION. WHILE DRIVING WITH MY WIFE AND BOTH KIDS BACK FROM BRUNCH SUNDAY EARLY AFTERNOON - THE LEFT REAR DOOR OPENED ON ITS OWN. IT WAS FULLY CLOSED PREVIOUSLY AND ABOUT A MILE OR TWO DOWN THE ROAD IT POPPED OPEN AND BECAME AJAR WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH. THE CAR INDICATED A DOOR WAS OPEN. I HAD PERSONALLY CLOSED THE DOOR AND AM SURE THAT IT WASN'T OPEN WHEN I STARTED DRIVING, THE CAR WOULD HAVE NOTIFIED ME ANYWAY. I PULLED OVER IN A PARKING LOT AND TOOK PHOTOS WHICH I'VE SENT TO BMW. MY DAUGHTER IN THE BACK SEAT WAS STRAPPED INTO A CAR SEAT WITH 5-POINT HARNESS AND SEPARATE ARM RESTS. SHE SAYS SHE DID NOT TOUCH THE DOOR IN ANY WAY TO TRIGGER THE INCIDENT.
