Summary

I was backing out of the garage intending to stop on the driveway and inspect tires in the sunlight. The brakes had no effect and the car proceeded across the street and up the neighbor's driveway and finally stopped just short of their garage door. All this time I was applying the brake repeatedly with no result. Why it stopped just in time to save neighbor's door I don't know. I was too panicked to think of using the parking brake until later. A similar incident had occurred about a year ago in a restaurant drive-through. At that time I rear-ended the car in front about instantly, the cars were so close together. It happened so fast I thought maybe I had pushed both accelerator and brake with one foot, so I called it driver error and thought no more about it. This time there was plenty of time and no doubt about it, I applied the brakes many times and nothing worked until right at the top of their driveway. The current incident happened on May 16, 2021. I had taken the car (Infiniti QX70) to Nissan Reno on May 14 for oil change, filter, and brake fluid exchange, since Infiniti Reno was closed until further notice. The timing makes me wonder whether something happened during the fluid exchange. I haven't been back to Nissan Reno, not sure whether to trust them. This was reported to Ask Infiniti web site, and their suggestion was to take the car to nearest open Infiniti dealer in Roseville CA about 120 miles away. With questionable brakes? I don't think so.

THE DEALER IS SAYING THE ONLY WAY TO REPAIR IT IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE PASSENGER SEAT, WHICH I VERY SELDOM EVER HAVE ANYONE IN MY CAR. BOTH THE QX50 & QX60 HAVE RECALLS FOR THE SAME THING, BUT THE QX70 DOES NOT. THE LIGHT JUST CAME ON FRIDAY MORNING, WITH NO ADVANCE NOTIFICATION OR ISSUES. I'M TOLD THE REPLACEMENT PART FOR THE AIR BAG MODULE IS 873003GW4B AND THE OCS SENSOR IS K88206W0Y0A

Summary

THE SUNROOF EXPLODED AT APPROX 8AM 5/30/2017. THE EXPLOSION WAS PRECEDED BY A RATTLING NOISE, THEN A VERY LOUD AND SCARY BANG. I WAS TRAVELING APPROX 65 MPH ON I80 W (BETWEEN VACAVILLE AND FAIRFIELD CALIFORNIA). MORNING TEMPERATURE MILD--PROBABLY IN THE UPPER 60'S. I PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY AND FOUND THE SUNROOF GLASS HAD FIRST EXPANDED THEN SHATTERED. BECAUSE THE INSIDE ROOF DOOR WAS CLOSED, SHARDS OF GLASS DID NOT FALL INTO THE CAR, BUT THEY DID DO SOME DAMAGE TO THE PAINT JOB. CALLED THE DEALERSHIP WHO HAD ME BRING IT IN THE NEXT DAY--I WAS TOLD THE REPAIR WOULD NOT BE COVERED BY MY WARRANTY NOR MY EXTENDED WARRANTY BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED SOMETHING HIT THE GLASS. WHEN I TOLD THEM NOTHING HIT THE GLASS AND POINTED TO THE EXPANSION OF THE GLASS THEY STILL REFUSED TO COVER THE REPAIR. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO START FARM INSURANCE AND THEY COVERED THE $1850 REPAIR BILL. MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP FOR OVER 2 WEEKS BECAUSE THE REPLACEMENT GLASS ORDERED BY THE DEALERSHIP ARRIVED SHATTERED TOO. THEY MUST BE USING INFERIOR THIN GLASS TO HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN!

THE INTERIOR COURTESY LIGHTS UNDER THE DASH REMAIN ON WHEN CAR IS RUNNING. DURING NIGHT TIME DRIVING THIS IS VERY DISTRACTING TO ATTENTIVE SAFE DRIVING. ACCORDING TO INFINITI, THIS WAS ENGINEERIED TO REMAIN ON AND THERE IS NO WAY TO TURN THE LIGHT OFF. THE CHANGE TO THE LIGHTING WAS DONE ON MODELS BEGINING WITH 2014. IN EARLIER MODELS ALL THE AMBIENT LIGHTS GO OUT WHEN THE CAR IS STARTED.

Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Incident Date: 05/19/2015
Crash: No
Fire: No
Vehicle Identification Number: JN1BY1AR0FM******
Summary

THE VEHICLE CONSISTENTLY EXHIBITS A SHUDDER (VIBRATION, TREMOR) WHEN (1) THE VEHICLE IS WARMED (DRIVEN AT LEAST 10 MILES FROM COLD START), (2) MOVING AT A SPEED ABOVE APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, AND (3) THE THROTTLE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. USUALLY, BUT NOT CONSISTENTLY, THE SHUDDER IMMEDIATELY DISSIPATES WHEN PRESSURE TO THE THROTTLE PEDAL IS RELEASED OR WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS PUT INTO NEUTRAL WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN INTO AND IN A RIGHT HAND CURVE, THE SHUDDER IS NOT PRESENT REGARDLESS OF ANY OR NO PRESSURE ON THE THROTTLE PEDAL. IN A LEFT HAND CURVE, HOWEVER, THE SHUDDER IS PRESENT OFTEN WITHOUT ANY THROTTLE PRESSURE. WHEN COASTING ON A STRAIGHTAWAY THE VEHICLE TYPICALLY, BUT NOT CONSISTENTLY, EXHIBITS NO VIBRATION. INFINITI HAS FOUND THIS DEFECT IN OTHER Q70S SINCE MY REPORTING OF THE PROBLEM ON 20 MAY 2015. CAUSE/SOURCE OF PROBLEM HAS NOT YET BEEN IDENTIFIED TO MY KNOWLEDGE. IMPLICATION OF PROBLEM ON VEHICLE SAFETY, IF ANY, HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED.

Summary

IN A WEEK OLD QX-70 WITH ONLY 448 TOTAL MILES, WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, I LEANED FORWARD SLIGHTLY AND LEFT SIDE (FLOOR ANCHOR SIDE) OF DRIVER'S SIDE SEATBELT FAILED BY THE HIP WEBBING SEPARATING FROM THE FLOOR ATTACHMENT POINT. THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT SIDE ATTACHMENT THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE DETACHABLE, BUT THE LEFT FLOOR ANCHOR SIDE. HAD THIS OCCURRED IN AN IMPACT I WOULD HAVE BEEN INJURED. THIS ATTACHMENT POINT IS OF A STRANGE AND ILLOGICAL DESIGN IN THAT IT HAS A PROBE SIMILAR TO THE REGULAR ENTRY/EXIT SEAT BELT ATTACHMENT. EITHER IN INSTALLATION OR MANUFACTURE THIS FLOOR ATTACHMENT DEVICE WAS EITHER NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY OR IS OF A POOR DESIGN. I AM A RETIRED MILITARY AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT INVESTIGATOR, SAFETY OFFICER, INDUSTRIAL SAFETY MANAGER, CERTIFIED SAFETY PROFESSIONAL, OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY TECHNICIAN AND AN OSHA AUTHORIZED OUTREACH INSTRUCTOR AS WELL AS A SAFETY ENGINEER. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE POTENTIAL OF INJURY AND/OR DEATH WITH OTHERS IF THIS SEAT BELT ATTACHMENT PROBLEM IS COMMON. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT INFINITI AND NISSAN USES THIS SAME DESIGN. THE DEALER HAS BEEN EXCELLENT IN IMMEDIATELY STARTING AN IN-COMPANY INVESTIGATION, BUT I VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS FAILURE. I HAVE PHOTOGRAPHS AVAILABLE FOR EMAIL. *TR
