Summary

In minus 12 degree temperature, I traveled to a store without incident and parked. Upon returning to the car and starting it, several warning lights went on, including the brake warning light was red, the electric shift control icon was red, VDC indicator light was on, master warning light was red. (may have been other warning lights on). Message was displayed to use parking brake to stop the car. Before applying the parking brake I tried to drive cautiously as I was on a small slope and the display showed my battery level was ok, and ample for the miles to go home, When I tried the brake there was a clicking sound somewhere underneath the car. There was no brake action so I stopped by using the parking brake. I tried this slow roll out two or three times to confirm I could stop the car if I used the parking brake, and there seemed to be no other cautionary problems showing. I was able to drive home with my caution lights, driving on the side of the road, going no more then 15 miles per hour, and using the parking brake when I needed to stop. It was extremely unsafe but most of my ride was uphill going home, and on a Saturday morning at 9am, in sub zero weather, traffic was very calm. The realization of my drive coming into town with most of the trip downhill set in and realized how lucky I was, and how I could have put myself or others in severe danger. I am researching now and will need to find a dealer or independent service center to review the vehicle.

Summary

I was at Ralphs parking lot ready to leave last Friday (11/5/2021), as I turned on the car, BRAKE'S light got lit up and when I pressed my foot on Brakes and put it on R (Reverse), I realized the Brakes were not working and the car was going backwards beyond my control. I immediately pressed the button and turned the car off. I left the car at Ralphs parking lot and towed the car to Glendale Nissan (California) next morning. They checked and said the Brakes are running on a very low battery and it needs to be fixed. My car has a very very low mileage and this must be a manufacturing defect. Since there was no recall on my vehicle for this issue, they are charging me $450.0 to replace the battery, plus more for other adjustments, for the total cost of $1,200, As I searched the internet, it seemed that there were recalls for this exact issue for 2015 Nissan Leaf ( I have the same). How come my vehicle never received any recall notice for the same issue. I was lucky that this happened in a parking lot. If this had happened while I was driving or picking up my grandchildren, it would end with a devastating results. Please contact Glendale Nissan and let them know not to charge the customer for a manufacturing defect.

Summary

The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Leaf. The contact stated while driving 10 MPH, the battery warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the residence and the battery was re-charged. The vehicle was restarted however, the failure recurred several times. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer who inspected the vehicle but could not determine the cause for the failure. The contact then took the vehicle to Port City Nissan (120 Spaulding Turnpike, Portsmouth, NH 03801, (603) 431-6500) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the firmware update needed to be performed. The dealer performed the software update however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 41,000.

Summary

I backed my car out of the parking space in front of a building, and drove on a 300+ ft long driveway. I stepped on the brake before entering the main road perpendicular to the driveway, but the car didn’t slow down. I almost hit the incoming car on the main road. As I maneuvered my car to avoid the other car, my foot was on the brake the whole time, but I couldn’t feel the brake at all. I panicked and forgot to use the emergency brake. I saw “Brake” on the display screen, with several other warning signs, including the yellow and red triangle exclamation marks. My car cruised for another 500 ft or so and finally stopped. I put the emergency stop flash light on. I called the police to report that my car was blocking half of the lane, before calling my insurance. Luckily it was not a very busy street. A police officer came after 30 minutes and he helped me move my car to the side of the road. He said the brake responded to him. After over an hour, the towing company came to tow my car to the nearest Nissan Dealer/Service Center (about 8 miles away). The guy from the towing company said he could feel the brake fine. It was less than 10 minutes before closing so l left my car at Nissan Service Center. This morning the Service Center called me and said they hadn’t found anything wrong during the initial diagnose yet. They called the Nissan North America to request them to send technicians to check my car. I have found on an online forum several threads discussing the same experience like me - no brake while driving a Nissan Leaf. The dates of those posts range from 2011 to 2014 to 2018. They also had the yellow and red triangle warning signs on, and some of them found their brakes work again after they waited a while and restarted the car. Although the cause hasn’t been identified yet, I wanted to report this incident because it is so dangerous. Imagine what happens if I would be on a highway (using the emergency break would also be dangerous).

CAR STARTED AS NORMAL IN THE MORNING. AS SOON AS I PLACED THE CAR IN REVERSE, THE CAR STARTED MOVING EVEN THOUGH I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS ENGAGED. I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND THEN THE CAR CAME TO A HALT. THERE WAS LOT OF STRANGE, LOUD CLUNKING AND CHATTERING NOISES WHILE TRYING TO BRAKE. I THEN PUT THE CAR IN FORWARD GEAR AND AGAIN THE CAR STARTED MOVING FORWARD WITHOUT ANY PRESSURE ON THE ACCELERATOR AND I HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR TO GET CAR TO STOP. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND PERFORMED A VISUAL INSPECTION UNDER THE CAR AND UNDER TO BONNET TO SEE IF ANYTHING IS LEAKING OR VISUALLY BROKEN - NOTHING FOUND. RESTARTED THE CAR AND THERE WAS A YELLOW "BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT" BUT BRAKE FUNCTION WAS RESTORED AND NO MORE STRANGE SOUNDS. I CAME TO WORK AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. AFTER 30 MINS TURNED ON THE CAR AGAIN AND YELLOW "BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT" HAD CLEARED AND CAR WAS AGAIN OPERATING AS NORMAL.

WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET AT ABOUT 40MPH, THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THE BRAKES BECAME COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. PUSHING ON THE BREAK PEDAL WOULD NOT SLOW THE CAR DOWN. AFTER BEING ABLE TO COME TO A STOP USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE I NOTICES THAT THE BRAKE WOULD KEEP RUMBLE BUT STILL UNABLE TO KEEP THE CAR AT A STAND STILL. THIS IS THE SECOND THIS HAPPENS IN ABOUT 8 WEEKS. THIS TIME I AM REPORTING IT. THE CAR HAS 37,000 MILES.

I DROVE MY VEHICLE TO MY CHILDREN'S DAYCARE A FEW MILES FROM MY HOME, PARKED, AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. WHEN I WENT TO START THE CAR TO LEAVE, I HEARD A STRANGE BUZZING TYPE SOUND AT STARTUP, AND THEN GOT A BUNCH OF WARNING LIGHTS FOR THE BRAKES AND TRACTION CONTROL. I TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND ON A FEW TIMES TO TRY TO GET THE WARNINGS TO CLEAR. I NOTICED THE BUZZING SOUND WAS COMING FROM WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL. I TRIED TO GET THE VEHICLE TO GO INTO NEUTRAL BUT IT WOULDN'T. THEN I TRIED PUTTING IT IN DRIVE, AND IT DID GO INTO DRIVE, BUT STARTED DRIFTING BACKWARDS BECAUSE I WAS PARKED ON A SLOPE. THIS IS THE SCARY PART THAT COULD HAVE INJURED SOMEONE. I WAS IN A DAYCARE PARKING LOT AND SOMEONE COULD HAVE WALKED BEHIND MY CAR AT THE TIME IT DRIFTED BACK. THANKFULLY THAT DID NOT HAPPEN. I MASHED ON THE BRAKE TO STOP THE CAR, AND IT DID STOP BUT REQUIRED MORE BRAKE TRAVEL AND MADE SOME GRINDING NOISES, LIKE THE ABS WAS OPERATING. AFTER I REALIZED I HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM, I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND SOME PEOPLE ON FORUMS WITH SIMILAR ISSUES. I TRIED DISCONNECTING THE 12V BATTERY FOR A FEW MINUTES, A COUPLE OF TIMES, BUT COULDN'T GET THE BRAKE ALARMS TO GO AWAY. SO I GOT IT TOWED TO MY DEALER. DEALER WAS BUSY AND DIDN'T GET TO LOOK AT THE CAR FOR TWO-THREE DAYS. THEY SAID THAT WHEN THEY TURNED ON THE CAR THEY DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG. I ASKED THEM IF THEY SAW ANY CODES, AND THEY CHECKED AND THEY FOUND CODES FOR THE CAN COMMUNICATION AND INTELLIGENT BRAKE SYSTEM. THE SERVICE ADVISOR CALLED THIS A "FLUKE" AND SAID THAT THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. HOWEVER, I AM READING THAT THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL YEAR LEAF. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR, ESPECIALLY NOT WITH MY CHILDREN IN IT. WHAT IF THE "FLUKE" COMES BACK WHILE I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND CAN'T SAFELY STOP IN TIME?

FIRST SIGNS OF A PROBLEM WAS A YELLOW TRIANGULAR WARNING SIGN ON THE DASH WHEN I WAS CLOSE TO HOME, BUT NO DRIVING PROBLEMS. NEXT TIME STARTING THE VEHICLE AT HOME (ALL ELECTRIC VEHICLE) MANY LIGHTS LIT UP ON THE DASH AND THE BRAKE PEDAL ALMOST WENT TO THE FLOOR AS IT JERKED AND JUDDERED DOWN, AND A LOUD WARNING SOUND WAS EMITTED WHICH CONTINUED FOR QUITE AFTER A WHILE AFTER VEHICLE WAS SWITCHED OFF. THE CAR HAS BEEN FLAKY EVER SINCE, WITH EITHER A RED OR YELLOW WARNING SIGN LIGHTING ON THE DASH- OR NOTHING AT ALL. THE MOST SERIOUS EXPERIENCE, HOWEVER, WAS ON SEPTEMBER 15 (2020) WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE IN A PARKING LOT (WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE - YOU CAN'T START WITHOUT THAT) - I PUT THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND THE CAR STARTED MOVING BACK EVEN THOUGH I STILL HAD MY FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE. I HAD TO USE A LOT OF EXTRA FORCE BEFORE THE VEHICLE FINALLY SLOWED DOWN AND STOPPED. THANKFULLY, THERE WERE NO OTHER VEHICLES OF PEDESTRIANS BEHIND ME. IN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ONLINE, I HAVE FOUND DOZENS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS - WHICH IS QUITE AMAZING CONSIDERING SO RELATIVELY FEW NISSAN LEAFS ARE ON US ROADS.

ACCELERATOR PEDAL SEEMED TO NOT WORK AT ALL. I BRAKED AND SLOWED DOWN BUT IT WAS FIGHTING THE MAXIMUM ACCELERATION. I TRIED PUMPING THE BRAKES AND KEPT SLOWING DOWN AND THE CAR LOST ALL ENGINE POWER AND SEEMED TO BRAKE ITSELF. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. TURNED IT BACK ON AND ALL SEEMED NORMAL. I AM CONCERNED THAT OTHERS MAY PANIC IN THIS SITUATION AND NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR. BRAKES FAILED UPON STARTING THE CAR. MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD (BRAKE, ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BRAKE SYSTEM) RESULTING IN TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE - CANNOT STOP THE CAR WITH NORMAL BRAKING EVEN WHILE JUST PUTTING THE CAR INTO DRIVE/REVERSE FROM PARK. STARTED HAPPENING ~3 WEEKS AGO. THE ONLY THING THAT STOPS THE CAR IS THE EMERGENCY / PARKING BRAKE. IF PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL ALL THE WAY, JUST BEFORE HITTING THE FLOOR THERE IS A LOUD POPPING / GRINDING NOISE AND THE PARKING BRAKE (?) ENGAGES. THE FIRST TIME, TURNING THE CAR OFF/ON FIXED IT. WE TOOK IT TO OUR LOCAL NISSAN DEALER, THEY SAID "COULD NOT FIND THE ISSUE IN THEIR SYSTEM" AND SAID IT WAS A "FLUKE" AND WOULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN. HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW DAYS LATER AND TURNING THE CAR OFF/ON DIDN'T HELP, AND THE CAR WAS STUCK IN OUR DRIVEWAY. TRIED REPLACING THE 12V BATTERY, WHICH FIXED THE ISSUE TEMPORARILY. HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW DAYS AFTER THAT AND HAD TO GET IT TOWED BACK TO NISSAN. *NOW* THEY FOUND THE ISSUE IN THEIR SYSTEM AND THINK IT'S THE "DRIVEN INTELLIGENT BRAKE UNIT" AND COSTS $2600+ TO FIX. THEY ALSO SAY THE "MAIN ENGINE HARNESS" MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR SOME REASON AS WELL, COSTING ANOTHER $2400+. HAVE CONTACTED NISSAN USA, THEY TOLD ME THEY DON'T HAVE A RECORD OF THIS BEING A PROBLEM WITH LEAFS (EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE DOZENS OF COMPLAINTS ON HERE) AND REFUSES TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE. THIS BRAKE SYSTEM IS *EXTREMELY UNSAFE* FOR THE DRIVER & PASSENGERS, AND EVERYONE AROUND IT. MY KIDS COULD HAVE BEEN NEAR THE CAR WHEN IT STARTED MOVING ON ITS OWN EVEN THOUGH I WAS PUSHING THE BRAKE PEDAL. NO ONE NEEDS TO DIE OR GET GRAVELY INJURED BECAUSE OF THIS FAULTY SYSTEM.

UPON STARTING MY 2015 LEAF, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, I WAS ABLE TO PLACE THE CAR IN REVERSE; IN SPITE OF THE BRAKE BEING DEPRESSED, THE CAR IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO MOVE. WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR, THE CAR CONTINUED TO MOVE IN REVERSE, UNTIL I FRANTICALLY APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. ALL DASH WARNING LIGHTS BECAME ILLUMINATED AND THE CAR MADE A GRINDING SOUND, WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER HAD TO PUT CAR IN REVERSE AND USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO MOVE THE CAR INTO A TOWABLE POSITION. PER NISSAN, THE INTELLIGENT BRAKE CONTROL UNIT FAILED AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE ASSOCIATED HARNESS. NISSAN OFFERED TO PAY $5,500, LEAVING ME TO PAY $1,500 TO COVER COST OF REPAIR. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN THAT THE VEHICLE CAN HAVE A CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE WHICH COMPLETELY DISABLES THE VEHICLE. I AM VERY FORTUNATE THE FAILURE OCCURRED IN AN AREA DEVOID OF ANY PEDESTRIANS AND CLEAR OF ANY MOVING OR PARKED VEHICLES. NISSAN KEEPS ON SAYING THERE'S NO ISSUE, AND IT'S A $4K FIX TO REPLACE THE WHOLE BRAKE SYSTEM, AND WILL NOT LOOK AT THE ISSUE. HAVE GONE TO SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS, NO HELP.

I WAS DRIVING FOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED. I WAS GOING 45 MPH. I WAS TWO CAR LENGTHS BEHIND HIM. I HIT THE BRAKES AND THE CAR WOULDN'T STOP. I THEN SLAMMED THE BRAKES AND THE CAR SLOWED DOWN, BUT I ENDED UP REAR ENDING HIM. IT FELT LIKE MY CAR WAS ON ICE, BUT THE ROADS WERE CLEAR. IT WAS 29 DEGREES OUTSIDE.

THE MORNING OF NOVEMBER 9TH, 2018 I ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE AFTER HAVING BEEN PARKED OVERNIGHT IN OUR GARAGE. WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, I DID NOT FEEL ANY RESISTANCE. AFTER PRESSING THE ON BUTTON, I FELT THE PEDAL RESIST AND VIBRATE. I HEARD A GRINDING SOUND FROM BEHIND THE PEDAL AND WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED FOR BRAKES AND ESC. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START SO I HAD IT FLATBED TOWED TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP. THEY DETERMINED THE ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROLLER HAD FAILED AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. THE DEALERSHIP AND NISSAN JOINTLY COVERED THE COST OF THE REPAIR, TO THEIR CREDIT. I AM CONCERNED THIS COMPONENT COULD FAIL WHILE DRIVING AND RESULT IN A LOSS OF BRAKING FORCE, CREATING AN UNSAFE SITUATION.

MY CAR WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY OF MY HOUSE. I TURNED IT ON LIKE I DO NORMALLY AND I THEN I SEE THE RED BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS AND THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD. I DIDN'T THINK TOO MUCH OF IT AS I WAS RUSHING TO GET SOMEWHERE. MY DRIVEWAY IS SLOPED DOWN SO WHEN I PUT IT ON DRIVE, I HAD TO STEP ON THE BRAKES. I NOTICED IT DIDN'T WORK AS I DEPRESSED IT ALL THE WAY DOWN. THEN I QUICKLY USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKES SINCE MY CAR WAS SLOWLY ROLLING DOWN. MY CAR IS 3 YEARS OLD, HAS ABOUT 35,000 MILES AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED.

Summary

I WAS DRIVING IN SOMEWHAT HEAVY TRAFFIC IN AN URBAN SETTING AT 25MPH WHEN, UNEXPECTEDLY, I HAD GREAT DIFFICULTY APPLYING THE BRAKES TO STOP AT AN INTERSECTION. IT TOOK CONSIDERABLE EFFORT, INCLUDING SWERVING, TO AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME, AND I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AS SOON AS I WAS ABLE, AGAIN HAVING GREAT TROUBLE STOPPING. THE LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE BRAKES FELT LIKE I WAS SKIDDING ON SNOW OR ICE, DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT WAS A FAIRLY WARM AUGUST DAY. THERE WAS AN ACCOMPANYING LOUD, UNPLEASANT SOUND COMING FROM THE BRAKES WHEN I STOMPED ON THEM. I HAD ALSO NOTICED THAT A NUMBER OF WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH HAD COME ON ALL AT THE SAME TIME WHEN THE PROBLEM STARTED. AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP IN THE PARKING LOT, I TURNED THE VEHICLE ON AND OFF MANY TIMES, AND EACH TIME, THERE WAS A LOW BUT CLEARLY AUDIBLE THRUMMING SOUND, PLUS A VIBRATION I COULD FEEL IN THE BRAKES. THE SOUND WAS PARTICULARLY SURPRISING TO HEAR, GIVEN THAT THE VEHICLE IS OTHERWISE AN EXTREMELY QUIET (100% ELECTRIC) VEHICLE. AFTER ATTEMPTING TO RESTART THE VEHICLE ABOUT TEN TIMES, I DECIDED TO LEAVE TO WAIT FOR AWHILE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO START IT AGAIN. AFTER ABOUT 20 MIN., I STARTED THE VEHICLE WITHOUT TROUBLE AND CAUTIOUSLY DROVE IT HOME ON LARGELY EMPTY SIDE-STREETS.

WHEN THE 12-VOLT BATTERY FAILED ON MY 2015 NISSAN LEAF, THE CAR WOULD STILL TURN ON AND WOULD MOVE FORWARD WITHOUT PUSHING ON THE ACCELERATOR. THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK EITHER. THIS HAPPENED TO ME BOTH IN A GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT AT NIGHT AND THEN THE NEXT MORNING ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET. SIMILARLY, WHEN IT TURNED THE CAR ON IN MY DRIVEWAY, I PUT IT IN REVERSE, AND THE CAR MOVED WITHOUT ME PUSHING ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE WHEN I PUSHED ON THEM. THE CAR BEHAVED THIS WAY 4 TIMES, INCLUDING ONCE FOR THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP SERVICE WORKER WHO HAD TO PULL THE CAR FORWARD IN THE LINE OF CARS WAITING TO BE SERVICED. AFTER NISSAN REPLACED THE 12-VOLT BATTERY, THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARED. SEVERAL LEAF OWNERS HAVE TOLD ME TO REPORT THE PROBLEM, BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN THAT THE CAR CAN MOVE BUT THE BRAKES DO NOT WORK WHEN THE 12-VOLT IS FAILING. I CALLED NISSAN TO NOTIFY THEM OF THIS PROBLEM BUT DID NOT GET A RESPONSE BEYOND A CALL FROM CONSUMER REPAIRS SAYING SHE WOULD MAKE A NOTE OF IT.

ONLY AFTER LETTING THE BRAKE UP AND PRESSING IT AGAIN DID IT WORK. FORTUNATELY I DIDN'T HIT ANYONE OR ANYTHING AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE BRAKES TO WORK IN TIME. THE NEXT TIME I WENT TO START THE CAR, THE DASHBOARD DISPLAY KEPT TELLING ME TO PRESS THE BRAKES WHEN PRESSING THE START BUTTON NO MATTER HOW MUCH I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKES. I COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO START. ONLY AFTER PLUGGING THE CAR IN AND RETURNING TO IT AN HOUR LATER DID THE CAR START.

I ACTIVATED MY VEHICLE BY PLACING MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND PRESSING THE IGNITION BUTTON. I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION IN REVERSE. IMMEDIATELY AFTER, MY VEHICLE BEGAN TO MOVE, BUT THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. AT THIS POINT MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP AND I FRANTICALLY PUMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL. AFTER ABOUT 5 OR 6 FEET OF DISTANCE IN REVERSE, MY VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED AND I PLACED IT IN PARK. NOTE: THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNING LIGHTS OR SOUNDS BEFORE THE BRAKES FAILED. THE INCIDENT I EXPERIENCED WAS A VERY CLOSE CALL. THE PARKING LOT I WAS LOCATED IS FREQUENTED BY MANY PEOPLE TAKING EXERCISE WALKS. IF SOMEONE HAD BEEN WALKING BEHIND MY VEHICLE WHEN IT MALFUNCTIONED, MY VEHICLE WOULD HAVE STRUCK THEM. MOREOVER, ANOTHER PARKED VEHICLE WAS JUST A FEW MORE FEET FROM WHERE I EVENTUALLY WAS ABLE TO STOP. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE REASON THIS HAPPENED WAS DUE TO 12V AUXILIARY BATTERY FAILURE. I HAVE ASKED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE PAST MONTH (EMAIL/PHONE) FOR AN EXPLANATION AND THEY HAVE IGNORED ME. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT IF THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT MAY OCCUR AGAIN AND/OR HOW IT CAN BE FIXED. THEY WILL NOT RESPOND TO MY EMAILS OR VOICE MAILS. I HOPE YOU CAN HELP IN SOME WAY TO GET INFORMATION. AT THE VERY LEAST, MAKE YOU AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. NOTE: I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM AGAIN, BUT AM ESPECIALLY CONCERNED NOW BECAUSE NISSAN IS IGNORING ME. *TR

THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) IS DESIGNED TO CLASSIFY THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER AND, UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, AUTOMATICALLY TURN OFF THE PASSENGER AIR BAG. THE OCS SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO ONLY DEPLOY THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG WHEN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT IS OCCUPIED BY AN ADULT. IN THE AFFECTED VEHICLES, THE OCS SOFTWARE MAY INCORRECTLY CLASSIFY THE PASSENGER SEAT AS EMPTY WHEN IT IS OCCUPIED BY AN ADULT. IF THE OCS DOES NOT DETECT AN ADULT OCCUPANT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WOULD BE DEACTIVATED. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY STREET AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MILE PER HOUR. I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW DOWN FOR A STOP LIGHT. THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN. I TRIED TO PUT THE CAR INTO "B" MODE TO SLOW IT DOWN AND THAT DID NOT HAVE ANY EFFECT (NORMALLY IT WOULD SLOW THE CAR DOWN THROUGH REGENERATIVE BRAKING). I THEN CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE CAR SLOWLY (15-20MPH) FOR ~ 3 MORE MINUTES UNTIL I WAS IN A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AGAIN AND IT FELT "NORMAL" (PEDAL DID NOT GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR) AND THE BRAKES OPERATED NORMALLY. I CALLED NISSAN CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY OPENED A CASE NUMBER, TOLD ME TO EITHER CALL ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE, OR IF I FEEL COMFORTABLE, DRIVE THE CAR TO A LEAF-CERTIFIED DEALERSHIP. THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT COULD HAVE HAD A TRAGIC ENDING. SINCE I DID NOT (LUCKILY) GET INTO AN ACCIDENT, THE NISSAN REPRESENTATIVE DID NOT SEEM TOO WORRIED ABOUT IT. I WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN HER REACTION. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY SERIOUS SAFETY-RELATED ISSUE THAT THE COMPANY SHOULD INVESTIGATE.

Summary

I'VE ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 2 MONTHS, AND THE BRAKES HAVE FAILED REPEATEDLY, ONCE ABOUT EVERY 5 DAYS ON AVERAGE. EVERY TIME THEY HAVE FAILED, IT WAS WHEN I START UP THE CAR, AND PUT IT IN EITHER FORWARD OR REVERSE. I USUALLY PULL FORWARD INTO A PARKING SPOT, SO I GO IN REVERSE MUCH MORE FREQUENTLY AFTER STARTING UP, BUT IT HAS HAPPENED WHEN GOING FORWARD TOO. THIS IS THE FAILURE MODE. I START THE CAR, WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND THEN I PUT IT IN REVERSE. AT THAT POINT THE CAR STARTS ROLLING BACKWARDS, EVEN THOUGH I'M STILL HOLDING DOWN THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKE PEDAL GETS SOFT AND WHEN I FLOOR THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE CAR FINALLY SLOWS DOWN AND STOPS. ANOTHER WAY TO STOP IT IS TO PUT IT BACK IN PARK, BUT THAT CAUSES IT TO JERK TO A HALT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS IS A SCARY SCENARIO, AND THIS FREQUENTLY HAPPENS AT MY KIDS' SCHOOL, WHERE THERE ARE MANY KIDS AND PARENTS WALKING THROUGH THE PARKING LOT. IN ADDITION, THE CAR ALSO HAS SOME OTHER PROBLEMS. IT SOMETIMES STARTS A LONG UNINTERRUPTED BEEP WHEN I TURN OFF THE CAR TO GET OUT. THE BEEP GOES ON FOR MINUTES, AND SOMETIMES I SEE A WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD. FINALLY, THE CARD COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING TODAY. AN ERROR MESSAGE OF "T/M SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD, AND I WAS NOT EVEN ABLE TO PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL FOR THE TOW TRUCK. THE DRIVER WINDOW DID NOT WORK ANYMORE. AFTER ATTACHING A BATTERY CHARGER TO THE 12V BATTERY, I WAS ABLE TO PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL, BUT NOT ABLE TO PUT IT IN REVERSE OR DRIVE, OR EVEN BACK IN PARK. THE CAR HAD MORE THAN HALF OF ITS BATTERY CELLS FULL, SO THE PROBLEM WAS NOT BECAUSE IT RAN OUT OF CHARGE.

WE'VE TRIED DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS; GETTING IN THE SEAT AFTER THE CAR HAS STARTED, HOPING UP AND DOWN (TRYING TO TRIGGER THE WEIGHT SENSOR), CHANGING OCCUPANTS, UN-BUCKLING AND RE-BUCKLING THE SEAT BELT. NOTHING SEEMS TO MAKE THE ISSUE GO AWAY. CAR IS AT THE DEALERSHIP, SO FAR THEY HAVE NO LEADS.

Summary

WHENEVER WE COME TO A STOP FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT OR A STOP SIGN, AND THE SPEED OF THE CAR IS < 3 MILES , WE NOTICED THAT WHEN WE APPLY BRAKES, THEY DO NOT GET APPLIED IMMEDIATELY. THERE IS A SUDDEN SURGE IN ACCELERATION BEFORE THE CAR COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS IS VERY NOTICEABLE ESPECIALLY WHEN WE APPLY BRAKES TO SLOW THE CAR BEFORE A TRAFFIC SIGNAL OR STOP SIGN AND ALSO IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. AS A RESULT, WE TEND TO STOP THE CAR ATLEAST COUPLE OF METERS BEFORE THE STOP LINE OR THE CAR IN FRONT TO BUFFER THE ACCELERATION BY THE CAR. THANK YOU *TR

Summary

THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND AS NORMAL ON A COLD SNOWY DAY. THE TIRES DID NOT SLIDE AND IT WAS NOT A HARD BRAKING SITUATION. MULTIPLE TIMES THROUGHOUT THE DAY, THE BRAKES WERE NOT ENGAGING PROPERLY. THE CONDITION WENT AWAY THE NEXT DAY; A WARMER DAY. IT HAPPENED AGAIN 2 WEEKS LATER AND I CAN NOW RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM AND BE CAUTIOUS.

Summary

BRAKE FAILURE. CAR BARELY STOPPED WHEN BACKING OUT OF GARAGE. SYSTEM DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN BRAKES IN CASE OF ELECTRICAL FAILURE DID NOT FUNCTION. CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALER WHERE PROBLEM WAS DUPLICATED BUT NO CAUSE WAS IDENTIFIED. STILL NOT REPAIRED AS OF 2/18/15 BECAUSE BRAKES STARTED WORKING AGAIN AT DEALER. WHEN FAILURE OCCURRED, TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT CAME ON. CAR HAD BEEN TO DEALER THE WEEK BEFORE FOR "GRABBING" EXTREMELY SENSITIVE, BUT TRANSIENT, BRAKE PROBLEM. NO PROBLEM COULD BE IDENTIFIED.

Summary

MY 2015 LEAF S IS 3 WEEKS OLD WITH LESS THAN 700 MILES. I WAS DESCENDING AN 8% GRADE HILL IN B MODE WITH A SHARP BEND AT THE BOTTOM. AS I WENT TO APPLY THE BRAKES, THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND B MODE CUT OUT. THE CAR WAS NOW ROLLING DOWN THE HILL AND ACCELERATING UNDER GRAVITY WITH NO BRAKES AND WITHOUT B MODE SLOWING THE CAR. I WAS EXPECTING TO HIT A BRICK WALL AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL WHEN SUDDENLY, AFTER NO MORE THAN TWO SECONDS, THE BRAKES AND B MODE CAME BACK ON AND I SAFELY STOPPED. ON REFLECTION AFTER THE INCIDENT, IT WAS AS IF THE WHOLE COMPUTER/ELECTRONICS MOMENTARILY SHUT DOWN AND THEN REBOOTED. I DIDN'T NOTICE IF THE DASH LIGHTS WENT OFF OR NOT. *TR

Summary

THE LEAF OFTEN SHOWS THAT MY PASSENGER AIR BAG IS DISABLED, EVEN THOUGH MY SON WHO IS OVER 100 POUNDS IS SITTING IN THE SEAT WITH THE SEAT BELT ON. THIS HAPPENS ABOUT 50% OF THE TIME AT ALL SPEEDS WHEN HE IS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. I THINK THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE SENSORS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. I WOULD HATE TO GET IN A CRASH AND NOT HAVE THE AIRBAGS DEPLOY! *TR
