I bought this vehicle on July 3, 2015. When I took it in for an oil change in Dec. 2015, I was informed that there was a mice infestation and that the electrical wires and other systems were damaged, resulting in about $2,800 in repairs due to the mice chewing the wiring. I just took this vehicle back in on 29 Nov. 2021 because some of the systems weren't working properly, and they confirmed that a mouse has again chewed up the electrical system, again costing about $5,000 in repairs. I've just been informed by my exterminator that Toyota uses a wiring harness coated with a soybean based coating which is causing reports of mice damage in a lot of Toyota vehicles. We have 2 other vehicles which are not Toyota vehicles and have never had a single problem with mice chewing the wiring harnesses of those vehicles, although all are parked in the same area. The vehicle is currently pending repairs at Fred Haas Toyota Country in Houston, TX and will be there for at least a couple of weeks pending availability of parts. Electrical issues of this type can cause serious failure of safety features. Toyota has never told me that they use soy based elements in their vehicles that would entice rodents to chew the wiring or otherwise entice them into the vehicle. I do not have a report from insurance yet, but I have filed a claim.

Warning lights came on (10/15/21) Diagnosted: pressure control chip for the master cyclinder failed. After braking at a traffic light the car switched to neutral by itself and failed to acceleerate or move forward (10/16/21).

As stated from 5 months after we bought it, and the first prius, the car won't start. No matter if parked flat, keys in or out over night, or the temp, when the break is pushed it is squishy and makes draining noise and won't start. As a dr on call i have LOST patients because I could not leave my house. i carry and use the charger daily ever since. Taken in lots. they say, "you don't drive enough..or some other bogus excuse, like don't leave keys in car, which is how priuses start and run!. the car is driven in all ways a lot. also we buy headlights and headlamps on both about every 2 months. also it looses power and has shut off while driving. the worst is when it would start on its own in the locked garage. at that point my wife just quit driving all together. nothing but nightmares. She almsot crashed on fw when power went out.

On August 10, 2021 my 2015 Prius was parked in a Strip Mall parking lot. When I turned on the Prius and shifted into reverse, after traveling only a foot or so, the shift selector popped into Neutral. When I shifted into Drive, it happened again. After several tries with the same results, I called Findlay Toyota Service. I was advised to have the car towed, at my expense, to Findlay Toyota Service. Note: the tow truck driver reported to me and the Findlay Service Representative that he could keep the shift selector in gear by holding it in place with his hand while driving it to the tow truck. The Prius was left at Findlay Toyota for 2 days. The Service Rep reported that 3 different mechanics plus himself could not duplicate the problem; the Prius stayed in gear for them. I researched online and found other Prius owners reported this problem ocurring intermittantly. The only solution seems to be replacing the Shift Selector Switch at a cost of $838.35 + tax. Even though this is clearly a safety hazard, there is no recall.

While attempting to accelerate from a stop light, the Prius stalled. It would not accelerate although the engine revved. I restarted the car by powering completely off and back on. I tried to accelerate again multiple times until it slowly came up to speed the third attempt. The car was in drive and has never happened before. This is a safety concern for multiple reasons but the main being it can cause harm to those in the vehicle as well as other drivers on the road when the car stalls unexpectedly. There were no warning signals on the dash. Toyota dealer looked at it right away, ran diagnostics, and could not find an issue. Nothing was “fixed” or updated.

Additionally, the Hybrid System failure message was displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the inverter to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending the repair. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V369000 (Hybrid Propulsion System) however, the Vin was not included. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

The contact owns a 2015 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving at 15 MPH, the vehicle began to die as the "check hybrid system, stop the vehicle in a safe place" warning message illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact was able to barely pull off to the side and called the police for assistance. The police were able to move the vehicle to the side of the road and a tow truck was called for assistance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was initially towed to a gas station but the contact then had the vehicle towed to a dealer. While there, she discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V369000 (HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM), which she linked to her failure; however, her VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was 45,000

Summary

During routine low speed suburban driving, a fire started under the hood in the right front of the car. The smoke was first noticed by a pedestrian so I pulled over, got out of the car, and called 911. I had no prior warning of any sort. The fire completely destroyed the car. This is being investigated by Toyota. I have photos and would be happy to provide more details.

The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, a vehicle hit the front driver's side causing damages to the front driver's side door and undercarriage. The contact stated none of the air bags deployed. The contact stated ambulance did arrive at the scene where they took the contact to the hospital. The contact sustained injuries to their head due to the front side window shattering causing a laceration on the left eyelid and small facial fracture as well bruising and swelling of the left eye. The contact stated the other driver in the accident and passenger was taken to the hospital as well but the contact did not know if they were injured. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the tow yard. The contact attempted to reach out to the local dealer but there was no response. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 76,000.

IT SAYS THIS IS NOT A RECALL, BUT RATHER AN ADVISEMENT OF A VOLUNTARY CUSTOMER PROGRAM THAT HAS BEEN INITIATED FOR MY VEHICLE. IT SAYS THAT IF I HAVE THE INCLUDED SYMPTOMS, TO BRING IT IN FOR EVALUATION, AND A REPAIR WILL BE ATTEMPTED, BUT IF THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE IPM, I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THE INVESTIGATION. TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH IN A NEIGHBORHOOD, I HAD JUST TURNED INTO A DIAGONAL PARKING SPACE IN A CUL-DE-SAC AT ABOUT 10AM AND THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FORWARD AND HIT A YELLOW IRON POST BEYOND THE FRONT OF THE PARKING SPACE. IT HAPPENED IN A MATTER OF 2-3 SECONDS AND I COULDN'T STOP THE CAR BY BRAKING. THE POST STOPPED THE CAR AND CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE CAR. IT WAS EXTREMELY PERPLEXING AND I STILL DON'T THINK IT WAS CAUSED BY MY ACTIONS DUE TO THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. I NO LONGER HAVE PHOTOS OF THE DAMAGE. I CONTACTED MY INSURANCE CARRIER AND MY RATES INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY BUT I STILL FEEL STRONGLY THAT I DID NOT CAUSE THE ACCIDENT. CONDITION DESCRIBED AS "HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING" SHOWING ON INSTRUMENT PANEL AND VEHICLE GOING INTO "FAIL-SAFE DRIVING MODE". CALLED PHONE NUMBER ON THE NOTICE AND WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM WE HAD WITH THE CAR WAS THE CONDITION DESCRIBED IN NOTICE, BUT NOTHING COULD BE DONE UNTIL IT FAILS AGAIN AND THE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS ARE POSITIVE. I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN MY CAR'S HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING LIGHTS A CAME ON , AND THE CAR SLOWED TO A CRAWL. LUCKILY I WAS IN THE RIGHT LANE AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THE CAR COMPETELY SHUT DOWN. I'VE HAD IT TOWED TO TWO TOYOTA DEARLSHIPS, (THE SAME ONE TWICE),WHERE I WAS TOLD A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT THINGS. FIRST, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS WATER IN THE GAS TANK. THERE WAS NO WAY THAT WAS TRUE, SINCE I HAD ALREADY DRIVEN 3/4'S OF A TANK OF GAS, AND I ALWAYS FILL MY TANK UP. I REFUSED TO HAVE A NEW FUEL SYSTEM PUT IN TO THE TUNE OF $2500. I HAD IT TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP, AND WHERE HE GOT 5 GALLONS OF WATER OUT OF THE TANK. I ONLY HAD ABOUT 3 GALLONS OF GAS IN THE CAR TO BEGIN WITH, AND I KNOW I DIDN'T PUT WATER IN THE TANK.THE HYBRID SYSTEM SEALS HAD NEVER BEEN BROKEN, SO THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T EVEN CHECK THAT OUT, EVEN THOUGH THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON REGARDING THE HYBRID SYSTEM. VERY FISHY...THE NEXT DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THERE WAS WATER IT AND IT NEEDED TO BE DRAINED AND FUEL REPLACED, EVEN THOUGHT THAT HAD JUST BEEN DONE. THEY SENT ME A PHOTO OF A COKE BOTTLE WITH ABOUT 1/4 CUP OF FUEL WATER MIX. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE HYBRID BATTERY SYSTEM WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY SINCE AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP DRAINED THE FUEL SYSTEM.THE CAR'S BATTERIES WERE STILL UNDER WARRANTY, SINCE IT WAS UNDER 100,000 MILES. WE SENT IT BACK TO THE FIRST DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY NOW SAID IT WAS A FAILED ENGINE WHICH WOULD COST $10,000 TO REPLACE. (MORE THAT THE WORTH OF THE CAR). THIS NIGHTMARE HAS LASTED OVER 8 MONTHS! IT BEGAN IN SEPT.2019. COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA CORPORATE TO NO SATISFACTION. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN 2025 AND I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING BRAKE FAILURE ISSUES EVERY TIME I ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE OVER EITHER A POTHOLE, A SLICK SURFACE LIKE A METAL SHEET AT ROAD CONSTRUCTION OR WET ROADS THE BRAKE WOULD FAIL. ALL THE RED WARNING SIGNS WOULD COME ON IN THE DASHBOARD AND THE BRAKES WOULD MAKE THAT LOUD HORRIBLE NOISE. I LOVE MY PRIUS, I DON'T WANT TO GET RID OF IT. I WAS HOPING TOYOTA MOTORS WOULD HAVE A FIXED FOR THE BRAKING SYSTEM BY NOW AS THIS IS VERY UNSAFE SPECIALLY INEXPERIENCED DRIVERS. THE PRIUS WAS STATIONARY, PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY OF OUR HOUSE. MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER WAS IN THE CAR WASHING THE WINDSHIELD AND WINDOWS ON THE INSIDE AND ACCIDENTALLY BUMPED THE GEARBOX (SHIFTER). THE CAR WENT OUT OF PARK AND INTO NEUTRAL AND ROLLED BACKWARD. THE ENGINE WAS NOT ON. THE CAR QUICKLY ROLLED 20 FEET INTO A TREE AND CAUSED 6200$ DAMAGES TO THE REAR OF THE CAR. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS BEHIND THE CAR. I BELIEVE THAT THE PRIUS CAN BE ACCIDENTALLY PLACED IN NEUTRAL IF ELECTRICAL IS ON IN THE CAR (IE RADIO) AND SOMEONE HAS THEIR FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND HITS THE GEARBOX BY ACCIDENT. THERE IS NO SAFETY ON THE SHIFTER TO PREVENT UNINTENTIONAL SHIFTING. MANY OTHER CARS REQUIRE A MANUAL BUTTON ON THE SHIFTER TO BE DEPRESSED PRIOR TO SHIFTING. THIS IS NOT THE CASE ON THE PRIUS. WITHOUT THAT SAFETY FEATURE, ACCIDENTS LIKE THIS ONE CAN HAPPEN AND POTENTIALLY KILL SOMEONE. THE CAR CAN BE MADE TO BE IN NEUTRAL BY ACCIDENT RATHER EASILY.

THE BRAKES ON MY 2015 PRIUS TOTALLY FAILED AND I HAD TO SWERVE TO AVOID CRASHING INTO THE CAR STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME. I'VE BEEN DRIVING FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS. IT WAS TERRIFYING. TO WIT: I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 20 M.P.H. ON CITY STREETS IN LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA, IN APRIL 2019. AS I DROVE OVER A BRIDGE, TRAFFIC WAS COMING TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT 200 YARDS IN FRONT OF ME. I DROVE OVER A NARROW METAL PLATE--THERE ARE SEVERAL ON THE BRIDGE--AND HIT THE BRAKES, BUT MY CAR DIDN'T SLOW. A WARNING LIGHT FLASHED--A STABILITY CONTROL LIGHT, I BELIEVE, DUE TO THE METAL PLATE. I PRESSED THE BRAKES TO THE FLOOR AS MY CAR ROLLED DOWNHILL ON PAVEMENT. MY CAR DID NOT SLOW AT ALL. I LOOKED IN THE DRIVER SIDE MIRROR AND SAW THAT THE LANE TO MY LEFT WAS CLEAR, SO I SWERVED INTO IT WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES. THE CAR SLOWLY CAME TO A STOP WELL BEYOND WHERE I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED HAD MY BRAKES WORKED PROPERLY. THE INCIDENT WAS SO TERRIFYING THAT I HAD TO PULL OVER TO COLLECT MYSELF. MY BRAKES WORKED PROPERLY AFTER THAT. A FEW DAYS LATER, I TOOK MY CAR TO PENSKE TOYOTA IN DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA, WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR, AND TOLD A SERVICE AGENT WHAT HAPPENED. I ASKED HIM TO FIX THE PROBLEM. AFTER SERVICE TECHNICIANS INSPECTED THE BRAKES THAT DAY, I WAS TOLD THE BRAKES APPEARED TO BE FINE AND, BARRING A RECALL, NOTHING COULD BE DONE. AS A SEPARATE BRAKE ISSUE, ON TWO OCCASIONS WHEN PANICK BRAKING FROM APEEDS OVER 50 MPH, TRAVELING STRAIGHT, ON FREEWAYS THE BRAKES HAVE LOCKED AND THE CAR HAS SKIDDED. THIS WAS ON DRY ROADS DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS, DRY ROADS AND ABOVE FREEZING TEMPERATURES. THIS VEHICLE HAS ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER WAS ADVISED OF THIS LOCKING ISSUE AND REPORTED THEY FOUND NO ISSUE. WE HAVE OUR BRAKES INSPECTED BY A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALRE AT MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED INTERVALS AND HAVE BEEN GIVEN A 'GREEN' RATING FOR PAD THICKNESS. THE ABOVE EVENTS STARTED LATE IN THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP AND WE ARE THE FIRST OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE. I AMA RETIRED ENGINEER WITH A FAIR BACKGROUND WITH PERFORMANCE DRIVING ON CLOSED CIRCUITS. I HAVE A SOLID UNDERSTANDING OF PROPER BRAKE PERFORMANCE. I FOND THE ABOVE EXPERIENCES DISCONCERTING AND OF CONCERN. THE BELOW DATE OF OCCURRENCE IS FOR THE LATEST SLOW BRAKE RESPONSE, NOT THE LOCKING UP.

2015 TOYOTA PRIUS V: THIS CAR HAS A BRAKE SYSTEM ACCUMULATOR THAT ACTIVATES AFTER THE CAR HAS SAT FOR A SUFFICIENTLY LONG TIME (OVERNIGHT, DURING THE WORKDAY, ETC). WHEN YOU OPEN THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR, THE ACCUMULATOR ACTIVATES AND PRESSURIZES THE BRAKE SYSTEM. HOWEVER, WHEN USING THE BRAKES WHILE DRIVING FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER THE ACCUMULATOR ACTIVATES, THE BRAKES ARE WAY TOO SOFT/SPONGY - SO SOFT THAT IT FEELS LIKE THE CAR WILL NOT STOP AND THE STOPPING DISTANCE IS LENGTHENED, SOMETIMES MORE THAN DOUBLED. MY LOCAL DEALER CLAIMS THEY HAVE TO BE ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM TO FIX IT. I HAVE HAD OTHER MODEL PRIUSES WHERE THEY HAVE SAID THE SAME THING, YET THE PROBLEM TURNED OUT TO BE A SYSTEMIC ISSUE IN A CERTAIN PRIUS MODEL. I FEAR THAT THIS IS ANOTHER PERVASIVE BRAKE ISSUE THAT TOYOTA IS TRYING TO HIDE.

AS I RELEASED THAT BRAKE, THE CAR LUNGED HARD ABOUT 10 FEET BACKWARD ACROSS THE PARKING LOT "DRIVE", INTO WHERE OTHER CARS COULD HAVE BEEN PARKED BUT LUCKILY WEREN'T. I AUTOMATICALLY AND IMMEDIATELY PUT MY FOOT BACK ON THE BRAKE WHICH STOPPED THE CAR. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WAS BEWILDERED AND SCARED BY WHAT HAD HAPPENED, COUNTING MYSELF VERY LUCKY THERE WAS NO OTHER CAR PARKED BEHIND ME. I DON'T KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE ENGINE'S LUNGE, I JUST KNOW THAT I HAVE DRIVEN TOYOTA PRIUS CARS FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS, LOVE THEM, AND NEVER HAD ANY DRIVING ISSUES. I HAD TO CALL OUT A TOW TRUCK TO JUMPSTART THE BATTERY BOTH TIMES. CAR WAS PARKED AND DIRECTIONS WERE FOLLOWED EXACTLY FOR CHARGING IT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO FOUND NOTHING WRONG AND WAS TOLD I SHOULD HAVE A DEDICATED LINE TO CHARGE THE CAR, EVEN THOUGH I WASN'T TOLD THIS BY THE SALESMAN. THE RADIO/NAVIGATION/TELEPHONE SYSTEM ON THE TOYOTA PRIUS V 2015 STARTED FREEZING A FEW WEEKS AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. THE GPS, RADIO, TELEPHONE ETC. ARE ALL CONTROLLED BY A CENTRAL TOUCH SCREEN PANEL ON THE DASHBOARD OF THE VEHICLE. THE GPS BECOMES UN-RESPONSIVE TO TOUCH AND CAN SUDDENLY NO LONGER BE USED! THIS HAS HAPPENED REPEATEDLY BUT RANDOMLY ON MY VEHICLE, AND MANY OWNERS ARE SEEING THE SAME ISSUE ON THEIR PRIUS V 2015 TOO. AFTER A FEW MILES OF DRIVING, THE SCREEN BECOMES UNRESPONSIVE, AND REMAINS UN-RESPONSIVE UNTIL THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND STARTED AGAIN, ESPECIALLY ON HOT DAYS. THE ONLY WAY CERTAIN OWNERS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET A PERMANENT FIX FOR THE ISSUE IS BY A REPLACEMENT OF THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM. IT APPEARS THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN FROM TOYOTA T-TT-0336-15 THAT MENTIONS THE ISSUE. HOWEVER, I HAVE ALREADY BEEN TO MY TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER 3 TIMES FOR THIS ISSUE, AND THEY KEEP SAYING THAT THEY CANNOT "REPRODUCE" THE ISSUE, AND NEED TO ANALYZE FURTHER. I HAVE TAKEN MULTIPLE VIDEOS OF THE ISSUE BETWEEN MAR 25 AND AUG 8 AND SHARED WITH THE SERVICE CENTER. BUT THEY REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND TAKE ACTION. The occupant classification system (OCS) that activates or deactivates the passenger seat air bag system may be improperly calibrated.
