Coolant has leaked all over my driveway because of a thermostat housing and water pump fail. I am getting fixed for the second time $1800 dollar fix. Very common amongst other Volkswagen owners. This is not fair. If they know of this problem it should be dealt with. Now I am out $4000 in repairs and have a big stain in my brand new driveway. This is very unsafe if driving long distances as coolant leaks everywhere.

Summary

Clockspring broken it’s the third time in 4 years. I was pulling out of a parking lot making a left turn. There was a ratcheting sound from the steering wheel. I then had an airbag error and none of the steering wheel mounted controls were working including the horn. The defective part is still installed.

We purchased our VW Golf TDI ([XXX]) in January 2015 and have now had to replace the clock spring three times. The first two times were covered under the 69L2 limited warranty(See attached bills) but our car now has 128,000 miles and is considered ineligible. We do not understand why our model year was not included under the unlimited warranty extension as part of the 69L2 campaign. When a major component fails three times over a six year period, there is obviously something wrong with it that has not been addressed. Our teenage son drives the car and it is unsafe to have life-saving components like the airbag and horn fail on a regular basis. Electronically controlled thermostat failed stuck closed on December 10, 2021. Vehicle had 63814 miles on the odometer. This is a common, known problem with this make/model. Engine overheated in stop and go traffic which caused limp home torque reduction. When traffic resumed there was a potentially dangerous situation because vehicle could not accelerate as quickly as expected by following drivers. There is a design flaw in that the thermostat should fail stuck open, and not stuck closed, to ensure adequate vehicle mobility to avoid a potentially dangerous situation. Additionally, this component is an On-Board Diagnostic Device belonging to the emissions control system. Failure should be covered under the federal emissions control warranty.

The heat in my 2015 GTI Autobahn only blows warm air out of the drivers side when heat is on for both sides. The VW dealership recommends a new thermostat, water pump, and heater core, and blend door. For now, I'm stuck with having a semi warm vehicle and the possibility of engine overheating while on the highway. With the coolant and thermostat being one of the vital parts of the vehicle, its upsetting for such a new vehicle to have such a common problem of needing a new water pump across the board. These types of imperfections in design and quality control need to be addressed due to the shear amount of people needing coolant related issues resolved on their own dime. Do better VW.

Summary

Plastic Thermostat Housing Failure-- Cracks and leaking coolant. While getting an oil change done at a local Volkswagen dealership, the mechanic pointed out that there is a coolant leak and showed me where the leak is coming from (Thermostat housing/water pump) The coolant is slowly seep out of the crack on the underside of the thermostat housing, I have been adding coolant every other week. As the loss of coolant often trips the low coolant warning if the level isn't maintained. I feel like I'm not the only one with this issue, after reading online Volkswagen community. Many 2015-2020 GTI owners are also having the same problem. The car overheated couple times when stuck in New York traffic, I would like Volkswagen manufacture to address this issue and give all the GTI owners an explanation to why their part fails less than a few years of ownership.

Summary

This razor blade sharp chrome trim near the shift nob and the small storage compartment is cutting my finger up every time I tried getting something out of the small compartment. This has already happened to me three times already while driving, it's like a paper cut and you look down to find a cut with blood dripping out of your finger. It is extremely dangerous when you are driving on the road when this happen, Volkswagen should have a recall on this chrome trim piece for the safety of all GTI owners period. I'm not the only one with this problem, many MK7 GTI owners are experiencing the same issue.

Linkage on the turbo wastegate actuator seizes if the car is not driven for more than a few months at a time. This causes the car to not produce any boost and leaves it in a state in between limp mode and normal rpm range. This makes it incredibly inconsistent with rpm and maintaining speed.

Hello - I own a MK7 VW GTI with approximately 42,000 miles. The vehicle has consistently had a "check engine" and "Low Coolant" light since approximately 20,000 miles and 3 years. The dealer checked the car but did not see a leak under their test. However, the car was diagnosed with a leaking water pump and thermostat which has been replaced out of pocket by an independent. This is apparently common with MK7 GTIs and can cause engine failure and stalling in the middle of the road.

This car had received regular maintenance at the dealer. If the car had been in motion, the driver and passengers could have been seriously injured. The sunroof on my car spontaneously exploded with no known cause. I was driving west on I-76 near Pittsburgh PA, going 70 mph. Suddenly a sound like a gunshot was heard and the sunroof had shattered leaving a big hole. The glass was contained above me and the passenger because the sun roof shade happened to be closed.

The steering control module and clockspring is faulty. My transmission light and airbag light came on. I brought it to my German auto repair shop and he did some research. It was confirmed as a faulty part and vw should pay for it. My functioning airbags and cruise control are things i rely on for safety. I will bring it in to a dealership because the clockspring has to be programmed by a dealership. I live 300 miles from a vw dealership and it is a real pain.

I HAVE A 2015 GTI THAT HAS ONLY 80,000 MILES ON IT. I HAD A REPAIR DONE TO REPLACE VALVES, COIL SPRINGS, SPARK PLUGS AND IGNITION COILS LAST YEAR DUE TO FAILURE OF THE ENGINE. THEY CLAIMED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AND A YEAR LATER THE SAME EXACT FAILURE HAPPENED. THE FIRST TIME IT COST 3,500 TO FIX WITH A CUSTOMER LOYALTY DISCOUNT. THIS TIME THEY SUGGEST REPLACING THE ENGINE AT A 14,000 PRICE TAG. THERE IS CLEARLY SOME DESIGN FLAW THAT IS CAUSING THIS REPEATED FAILURE IN SUCH A NEW CAR. VOLKSWAGEN DOESN'T BACK UP THE PREVIOUS REPAIR. WITH THE FREQUENCY OF THIS ISSUE I'M SURE THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME ISSUE.

MY COOLANT WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AT ABOUT 71K MILES, TO MY SURPRISE. MY MECHANIC CHECKED ALL FLUID LEVELS WHEN I LAST HAD THE CAR IN, WHICH WAS ABOUT 6K MILES PRIOR. I CHECKED THE COOLANT LEVEL AND IT WAS WAY BELOW THE MINIMUM LEVEL IN THE RESERVOIR. MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DETERMINED IT WAS THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING WHICH IN TURN CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE WATER PUMP AS WELL. THIS RESULTS IN A $980 REPAIR. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE, I HAVE DETERMINED THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS AFFECTED OTHER VW GTIS OF THE SAME MODEL GENERATION. THIS IS A FACTORY DEFECT AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY VW BUT MY CAR IS NOW OUTSIDE OF THE FACTORY WARRANTY. I AM SEEKING TO RECOVER THE MONEY I HAVE SPENT OUT OF POCKET AND TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING TO ANY OTHER OWNERS. THE DETAILS ARE AS FOLLOWS: THE ISSUE IS LIMITED TO 2015- US MODELS AND 2013- EUROPEAN MODELS, AND SEEMS TO BE RELATED TO THE EA888 REV3 ENGINE THAT IS IN SEVERAL MQB MODELS SOLD BY VW/AUDI. COOLANT WILL SLOWLY SEEP OUT OF A WEEP HOLE ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING. IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ENOUGH TO EVER LEAVE A PUDDLE BUT SLIGHT RESIDUE MAY BE SEEN UNDER THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING AND POSSIBLY ON THE OIL PAN. THE LOSS OF COOLANT OFTEN TRIPS THE LOW COOLANT WARNING IF THE LEVEL ISN'T MAINTAINED. DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE LEAK, THE COOLANT DROP CAN EITHER BE GRADUAL OR CATASTROPHIC. LOSS OF COOLANT HAS ALSO BEEN LINKED TO THE WATER PUMP FAILING. FURTHERMORE, THE ACCESSORY BRACKET GASKET CAN LEAK HOT OIL DOWN ONTO THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING (EVEN AFTER REPAIR) WHICH CAN CAUSE FAILURE. *TR

I HAVE SEEN AROUND THE INTERNET THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IN 2015-2016 GTI MODELS BUT ONCE YOU GO INTO THE VW PAGE NOTHING APPEARS. IT EVEN APPEARS ONLINE FROM TRUSTED SOURCES THAT THE RECALL NUMBER WAS 20Y5 AND 20Y6. CURRENTLY THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE VW FOR 1 MONTH AND THEY WANTED ME TO PAY AROUND $2,800 TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK AND ONCE I DID MY RESEARCH I FOUND OUT THAT THE EXACT PROBLEM HAPPENED TO THOUSANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAD THE SAME MODEL YET THE DEALER DID NOT EVEN MENTION IT TO ME AND WANT TO CHARGE ME WITH THE $2,800.

IN AUGUST OF 2019 I DISCOVERED ONCE AGAIN MY COOLANT LEVEL WAS LOW. UPON INSPECTING UNDERNEATH MY CAR I FOUND DRIED COOLANT ON MY OIL PAN. MY MECHANIC IS AGAIN TELLING ME THE WATERPUMP/THERMOSTAT HOUSING IS LEAKING AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO THE CARS COOLING SYSTEM AND DRIVING HABITS HAVE NOT CHANGED OVER THE LIFETIME OF THIS CAR. THE MECHANIC POINTED TO A POORLY DESIGNED SEAL ON THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING WHERE THE LEAK OCCURED. THE REPLACEMENT HOUSING APPEARED SIMILAR IN DESIGN. THIS IS A WIDELY REPORTED ISSUE, A SLOW COOLANT LEAK, ON 2015+ VW GOLFS, GTIS, AND RS AND IN EXTREME CASES CAN LEAD TO AN OVERHEATED AND RUINED ENGINE. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED AT ROUGHLY 60,000 MILES, OUTSIDE OF THE FACTORY WARRANTY. THE 2ND INCIDENT OCCURRED AT ROUGHLY 88,000 MILES.

WHILE DRIVING, THE CEL CAME ON. WE HAD THE CAR SCANNED FOR CODES. RESEARCHING THE CODES, WE BELIEVED THE ISSUE TO BE CRANK WALK. WE TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL SHOP WHO CONFIRMED THAT THRUST WASHERS HAD DISLODGED AND BEGUN DETERIORATING. THIS IS ESSENTIALLY A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AS THE CAR CANNOT BE DRIVEN WITHOUT CAUSING SIGNIFICANT FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. MOST COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION IS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE ($3500 + LABOR). WE HAVE SPOKEN WITH VW AND PRESENTED THEM WITH 17 OTHER CASES OF THE SAME FAILURE SINCE 1/1/2019, BUT THEY ARE UNWILLING TO WORK WITH US SINCE WE DID NOT GO TO A VW DEALERSHIP. THE VW DEALERSHIP LABOR RATE IS ~50% MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OUR SHOP WHICH IS EQUALLY AS QUALIFIED TO IDENTIFY AN ISSUE SUCH AS THIS. VW EXECUTIVE GROUP ADVISED ME THAT IF WE TOOK THE CAR TO A DEALERSHIP SO THEY COULD DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE, THERE WOULD BE POTENTIAL FOR GOOD FAITH ASSISTANCE BUT NOTHING IS GUARANTEED. THAT WOULD REQUIRE US BEING PREPARED TO TAKE ON UPWARDS OF $1000 ADDITIONAL EXPENSE FOR THE SAME REPAIR PROCESS. THIS EXPECTATION IS UNREASONABLE AND THIS TYPE OF FAILURE, WITH THE FREQUENCY WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO SEE INDICATES A SERIOUS ENGINEERING FLAW THAT IS COSTING OWNERS EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF MONEY FOR REPAIR ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED.

I'VE BEEN THROUGH THREE TRANSMISSIONS SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR THREE YEARS AGO. THE FIRST TRANSMISSION WENT OUT DUE TO MECHANIC ERROR, VW PUT A NEW ONE IN THAT ONE FAIL CATASTROPHICALLY BUT VW BLAMED THE FAIL ON THE FLYWHEEL (IT HAD HOTSPOTS ON IT) PAID $4000 FOR A USED TRANSMISSION (WITH 32K ON IT) AND NEW CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL. I AM WRITING ABOUT MY 2015 VW GTI. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS CAR. LIKE MOST GTI OWNERS, I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS A GREAT CAR. I AM THE 2ND OWNER OF THIS CAR, AND I PURCHASED THE CAR ABOUT 18 MONTHS AGO WHEN IT HAD ABOUT 25,000 MILES ON IT. OVER THE PAST YEAR, I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH OIL LEAKAGE FROM THE CAR. THIS PAST WEEK, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN. THE ATTACHED RECORDS SHOW ALL THE ROUTINE CARE AND SPECIAL CARE THAT I HAD TO GIVE THIS CAR DURING THE PAST YEAR. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP AND THE DEALERSHIP FOUND PIECES OF PISTONS AND THE PISTON RING IN THE OIL DRIP PAN. THE PAPER WORK IS ATTACHED ALONG WITH A PICTURE. WHO EVER HEARD OF PISTONS FALLING APART IN A CAR THAT WAS WELL TAKEN CARE OF AND WITH ONLY 60,000 MILES? THIS IS PREPOSTEROUS. THE TECHNICIAN AT THE DEALERSHIP INDICATED THAT THIS WAS THE THIRD CAR THIS YEAR ON WHICH HE WORKED WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE CAR NEEDS A NEW ENGINE TO A COST OF AT LEAST $10,000. THE CAR IS NOT DRIVABLE ANYMORE AS IT HAS NO ACCELERATION. THE CAR IS WORTHLESS UNLESS SOMEONE WANTS TO PUT IN A NEW ENGINE. I AM SENDING THIS NOTE TO VARIOUS GOVERNMENT AGENCIES TO NOTIFY THEM OF THIS OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE CAR. IF I FIND OUT THAT OTHER CARS ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM SUGGESTING A PATTERN OF DEFECTS COVERED UP BY THE MANUFACTURER, I WILL HIRE A LAWYER AND SEEK LEGAL REDRESS. IN THE VW GTI THERE ARE VARIOUS INTERIOR TRIM BITS THAT ARE A PLASTIC WITH A CHROME PLATING ON THEM. THE ISSUE WITH THESE ARE, THAT IT EVENTUALLY BEGINS TO DETACH ITSELF FROM THE PLASTIC TRIM PIECES AND IS EXTREMELY SHARP LIKE A RAZOR BLADE. THE REASON FOR REPORTING IT IS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS WITH SEVERAL PIECES IN MY OWN PERSONAL VEHICLE BOTH WHILE THE CAR IS PARKED AND IN MOTION. VW HAS A HISTORY OF REPLACING THESE PARTS UNDER WARRANTY ACCORDING TO FELLOW OWNERS, BUT THIS IS A CLEAR SAFETY ISSUE. THE PARTICULAR TRIM PIECE IN QUESTION IS RIGHT BEHIND THE GEAR SHIFTER AND IN FRONT OF THE CUBBY HOLE WHERE ONE WOULD PLUG IN THEIR MEDIA PLAYER OR CELLULAR PHONE ANY OTHER VARIOUS ITEMS USED THROUGH OUT THE DAY. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AS IT COULD VERY EASILY HAVE SLICED MY WRIST WHILE I REACHED INTO THE CUBBY TO RETRIEVE MY PHONE. THE FRUSTRATING PART IS THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS CAR HAS DRAWN BLOOD DURING DAILY USE. THE ENGINE START/STOP BUTTON HAS, THE GEAR SHIFTER HAS AND SO HAS THE STEERING WHEEL. IT WAS ONLY MY THUMB THAT WAS CUT IN THE PROCESS, BUT IT CUT VERY DEEP LIKE A RAZOR BLADE WOULD AND IT WAS A CHALLENGE TO GET IT TO STOP BLEEDING EVEN HOURS AFTER. NOW, THE CAR WAS PARKED WHEN THIS HAPPENED, BUT DRIVING HOME CERTAINLY WAS A CHALLENGE WITH BLOOD GUSHING FROM MY THUMB. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME VEHICLE ACCORDING TO MANY OF THE ONLINE SITES THAT OWNERS OF THESE CARS FREQUENT. ONE WAS EVEN A CASE WHERE THEIR VERY YOUNG CHILD WAS REACHING IN THE STORAGE CUBBY FOR SOMETHING AND CUT THEMSELVES RATHER BADLY ON THAT PIECE OF TRIM. IF IT CAN CUT DEEPLY LIKE A RAZOR BLADE, IT IS NOT IMPLAUSIBLE THAT IT COULD HAVE POSSIBLY CUT THEIR WRIST AND CAUSED A MUCH MORE SERIOUS INJURY. THE GLASS SHATTERED SUDDENLY IN A LOUD EXPLOSION THAT SOUNDED LIKE A GUNSHOT AND SHARDS WERE SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE AND COVERED MYSELF AND MY PASSENGER - ALTHOUGH MOST OF THE SHARDS BLEW OUTWARD AND LANDED ON THE ROAD. THE EXPERIENCE WAS EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING AND COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURIES. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CALM AND SLOWLY DRIVE OFF THE FREEWAY RATHER THAN JERKING THE WHEEL WHEN THE EXPLOSION HAPPENED. I PURCHASED A 2015 VW GOLF TDI WITH 18" WHEELS AND LOW PROFILE PIRELLI TIRES AUGUST 2014. THIS VEHICLE WAS RE-ENGINEERED FOR THE US MARKET TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE UREA TANK THAT IS NEW AND SPECIFIC TO THE US TDI PLATFORM. ALL OTHER GOLF MODELS HAVE AN INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION SYSTEM WHILE THIS MODEL WAS DOWNGRADED TO A TORSION BEAM REAR SUSPENSION. THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED ON LOWER END MODELS WITH 16" WHEELS AND HIGHER PROFILE TIRES, BUT THE HIGH END VEHICLES HAVE THE 18" WHEELS AND LOW PROFILE TIRES AS STANDARD EQUIPMENT. ON APRIL 25, I NOTICED A SIDEWALL BUBBLE ON A FRONT TIRE. VW REPLACED BOTH THE TIRE AND BENT RIM AND I WAS TOLD THE OTHER 3 RIMS WERE BENT. THEN THE OTHER FRONT TIRE HAD A SIDEWALL BLOWOUT AND BOTH THAT TIRE AND WHEEL WERE REPLACED. THE OTHER WEEK I ENDED UP WITH A SIDE WALL NAIL IN A REAR TIRE. THIS TIRE WAS REPLACED BUT NOT THE WHEEL AND I WAS TOLD THAT ALL WHEELS ARE BENT, INCLUDING THE 2 NEW WHEELS. I HAVE JUST UNDER 18000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE, HAVE CALLED VW AMERICA AND WAS SENT THE SPEC SHEET ON THE CAR. I ASKED IF A CAR WITHOUT INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION WAS ENGINEERED FOR LOW PROFILE TIRES AND ASKED FOR SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN WHY I HAVE HAD 2 SIDEWALL ISSUES AND 6 BENT RIMS IN UNDER 18,000 MILES AND 11 MONTHS WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE OTHER THAN VW AMERICA SENDING THE SPEC SHEET. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND ASKED FOR THE SPECIFIC ENGINEERING APPROVAL OF LOW PROFILE TIRES WITH THIS SUSPENSION SYSTEM AND WAS TOLD VW AMERICA DOES NOT HAVE THIS INFORMATION AND WOULD NOT PROVIDE IT TO ME IF THEY DID.

THE DRIVERS SIDE HIGH BEAM IS NOT AIMED PROPERLY, IT IS POINTED BELOW THE CUT-OFF LINE OF THE LOW BEAM. THE HEAD LAMP ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN REPLACED BY THE DEALER TWICE BUT THE AIM WAS NOT IMPROVED. VOLKSWAGEN WAS CONTACTED, THEY EVALUATED THE SITUATION AND SAID THAT THIS WAS THE WAY THE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED AND SO COULD NOT BE FIXED. THE DEALER ALSO SAID THAT THEY LOOKED AT OTHER CARS OF THIS SAME MODEL AND THEY ALL OPERATED THE SAME. BOTH THE HIGH AND LOW BEAM REFLECTORS ARE MOUNTED IN A COMMON HOUSING AND THE ASSEMBLY ONLY HAS ONE ADJUSTMENT SO BOTH BEAMS MOVE UP AND DOWN BY THE SAME AMOUNT. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN DEFECT. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS ONLY ONE OF THE HIGH BEAMS IS ILLUMINATING THE ROAD. *TR
