steering wheel clock spring malfunction, it is broke
Coolant has leaked all over my driveway because of a thermostat housing and water pump fail. I am getting fixed for the second time $1800 dollar fix. Very common amongst other Volkswagen owners. This is not fair. If they know of this problem it should be dealt with. Now I am out $4000 in repairs and have a big stain in my brand new driveway. This is very unsafe if driving long distances as coolant leaks everywhere.
Clockspring broken it’s the third time in 4 years. I was pulling out of a parking lot making a left turn. There was a ratcheting sound from the steering wheel. I then had an airbag error and none of the steering wheel mounted controls were working including the horn. The defective part is still installed.
The contact owns a 2015 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen. The contact stated that upon parking the vehicle, the tire pressure warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the rear end of the vehicle was very low. Additionally, her children informed her that their buttocks hurt whenever the vehicle would hit a bump while driving. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed the failure as a bilateral rear coil spring fracture. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist because the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V188000 (Suspension). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
Cruise control randomly disengaged without the brake pedal or cancel cruise button being depressed. Has happened several times in the last 1.5 years of car ownership. No hazardous road conditions were present, car did not slip and was not accelerating quickly. Sudden unexpected changes in speed, such as those caused by cruise disengaging suddenly, are hazardous. Problem has not been inspected or reproduced by a dealer. No warning lights appeared.
We purchased our VW Golf TDI ([XXX]) in January 2015 and have now had to replace the clock spring three times. The first two times were covered under the 69L2 limited warranty(See attached bills) but our car now has 128,000 miles and is considered ineligible. We do not understand why our model year was not included under the unlimited warranty extension as part of the 69L2 campaign. When a major component fails three times over a six year period, there is obviously something wrong with it that has not been addressed. Our teenage son drives the car and it is unsafe to have life-saving components like the airbag and horn fail on a regular basis. Was reaching across front console when metal trim near shifter seems to be released and acted like a razor blade cutting my hand severely.
The steering control module and clockspring is faulty. My transmission light and airbag light came on. I brought it to my German auto repair shop and he did some research. It was confirmed as a faulty part and vw should pay for it. My functioning airbags and cruise control are things i rely on for safety. I will bring it in to a dealership because the clockspring has to be programmed by a dealership. I live 300 miles from a vw dealership and it is a real pain.
Broken rear spring, impacting handling and preventing safe operation of the vehicle. I discovered this after noting handling issues and clunking noises from the rear of the vehicle. There were no warning lamps
CLOCK SPRING BROKE. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND RECALL FOR PREVIOUS YEARS, BUT APPARENTLY NOT MINE. SYMPTOMS ARE AIRBAG LIGHT ON, INOPERABLE STEERING WHEEL ACCESSORIES INCLUDING HORN. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IT SHOULD BE RECALLED. FIRST KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM WAS UPON STARTING FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. CAR WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE.
I HAVE A 2015 VW GOLF SPORTWAGEN WITH ABOUT 47K MILES. 9 MONTHS AGO I HAD MY CLOCK SPRING GO BAD IN MY VEHICLE, WHICH RENDERED MY AIRBAG TO BE DISABLED. THE REPLACEMENT WAS COVERED UNDER THE 3YR/36K MIKE WARRANTY THAT COMES WITH THE CAR NEW (THIS IS A TDI MODEL, SO THE IN-SERVICE DATE IS MAY 2018 -CAR HAS APPROX. 32K MILES ON IT AT THE TIME OF REPAIR). TODAY (MARCH 2021), I HAD MY CLOCK SPRING GO BAD AGAIN, WHICH DISABLED MY AIRBAG, AGAIN. VW TELLS ME THAT MY MODEL SPECIFICALLY ISN'T COVERED UNDER AN EXISTING EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT HAS BEEN ISSUED TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH ALMOST ALL MODELS OF VW FROM 2010-2018 AND THE NHTSA IS WELL AWARE. MY MODEL OF CLOCK SPRING, ALTHOUGH USED IN MANY OF THESE OTHER MODELS THAT ARE COVERAGE BY THIS EXTENDED WARRANTY, IS NOT COVERED BY VW. I'M NOT DRIVING WITH NO AIRBAGS UNTIL I CAN AFFORD TO REPLACE OUT OF POCKET. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND SHOULD COVER ALL MODELS WHICH USE THAT SAME CLOCK SPRING THAT IS THE PROBLEM.
THE CHROME TRIM AROUND THE SHIFTER LEVEL IS EXTREMELY SHARP AND IS A SAFETY HAZARD. REACHING INTO THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT IN FRONT OF THE SHIFTER, MY FINGER CAUGHT THIS SHARP EDGE AND WAS SERIOUSLY CUT. THERE WAS A LOT OF BLOOD AND PAIN AS A RESULT. AN ONLINE SEARCH REVEALS THAT THIS TYPE OF INJURY IS NOT UNCOMMON.
THE ENGINE WILL SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL ERROR MESSAGE COMES UP ON THE INFORMATION DISPLAY ALONG WITH A TPMS ERROR. THIS HAS HAPPENED IN INTERSECTIONS AND HAS PUT ME IN DANGER OF COLLISIONS FROM SUDDEN DECELERATIONS WITHOUT WARNING. THE CAR WILL USUALLY START AFTER THE IGNITION BUTTON IS DEPRESSED AGAIN. IT MAY HAPPEN UP TO FOUR TIMES BEFORE IT QUITS STALLING. THE ERROR MESSAGES CLEAR AFTER IT IS MOVING AGAIN. IT HAS EVEN HAPPENED ONCE ON THE HIGHWAY.
VW INSTALLED A RADIO SPEC FOR ANOTHER MODEL CAR IN MY VEHICLE THE REPLACEMENT PART IS A NEW PART NUMBER THIS PROBLEM CREATED A ROLLING SCREEN ON MY DISPLAY VERY DISTRACTING WHILE DRIVING I ASKED VW COSTUMER CARE TO REPLACE THE WRONG PART INSTALLED AT THERE FACTORY VW REFUSED TO COVER THE COST ,THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN YOUR MAIN DISPLAY IN THE CAR IS FLASHING AND THE SCREEN IS ROLLING AND WILL LEAD TO ACCIDENTS I BELIEVE VW SHOULD HAVE FIXED THIS AS A URGENT SAFETY MATTER THATS IT IS DISTRACTING THEIR DRIVERS
WHEN STATIONARY, DRIVER'S FRONT DOOR HANDLE STICKS OR JAMS, MAKING ENTRY OR EXIT DIFFICULT AT TIMES. WE HAVE HAD THIS REPAIRED AT THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE, BUT IS APPARENTLY REOCCURRING. THIS HINDERS ENTRY & EXIT AND COULD VERY WELL MAKE QUICK ENTRY OR EXIT MORE PROBLEMATIC IN URGENT OR EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. ONE SUCH URGENT SITUATION IS TRYING TO GET INTO OR OUT OF OUR VEHICLE WHEN PARKED ALONG A BUSY CITY STREET BEFORE TRAFFIC ARRIVES. I DON'T KNOW WHAT SPECIFIC PART IS INVOLVED, OUTSIDE THAT THE DOOR HANDLE APPEARS TO BE THE ISSUE. THIS APPEARS TO HAPPEN IN ANY WEATHER.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CENTRO DE SERVICIO FLAGSHIP VOLKSWAGEN (CARR. #2, KM 14.7 HATO TEJAS, BAYAMN, 00959, PUERTO RICO) AND WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUBCISION PUMP, FILTER AND FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED SINCE THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V647000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) HOWEVER, THE REPAIR FAILED TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 65,000.
TRIM AT COMPARTMENT / SHIFTER BOOT IS PEELING AND ALUMINUM COATING WILL HAVE A RAZOR SHARP EDGE WHICH SLICED MY HAND OPEN

THE VEHICLE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM HAS BECOME UNUSABLE (SCREEN DISTORTION) AFFECTING TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR, BACKUP CAMERA, TRACTION CONTROL SETTINGS (PREVENTING EMISSIONS INSPECTION), SERVICE NOTIFICATIONS AND OTHER VEHICLE SYSTEMS ONLY ACCESSIBLE THROUGH THIS UNIT. DEALER OFFERED LITTLE ASSISTANCE. SYSTEM HAS THEFT PROTECTION MAKING THE DEALER THE ONLY METHOD OF REPAIR. DEALER REFUSED TO UNLOCK A USED COMPONENT THAT COULD FIX THE PROBLEM.

THIS IS A SECOND REPAIR FOR A FAILED THERMOSTAT HOUSING/WATER PUMP ON THIS VEHICLE. THE FIRST TIME, JANUAARY 2019, THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING AND RELATED SEALS WERE REPLACED. THIS TIME THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING AND WATER PUMP WERE BOTH REPLACED.
THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED AS A CERTIFIED VEHICLE AFTER RECEIVING THE EMISSIONS FIX. AFTER LESS THAN 10,000 MILES AND ONLY ONE YEAR OF OWNERSHIP, ALL MY DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON (INCLUDING AIRBAG ERROR) AND THE FLOOR MATS WERE SOAKED WHEN I STARTED MY CAR AFTER A SEVERE RAIN STORM. I WAS TOLD THE SUNROOF DRAINS WERE PLUGGED AND CAUSED THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES. THE DRAIN BEING PLUGGED WITH DEBRIS IS CONSIDERED AN EXTERNAL FACTOR AND THEREFORE THE REPAIRS ARE NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY OF THIS CERTIFIED CAR. THE OWNER'S MANUAL INDICATES THAT MAINTENANCE ON THE SUN ROOF DRAINS IS RECOMMENDED AT 40,000 MILES. AS NOTED, THE CAR WAS BELOW THE 40,000 MARK BUT HAD SAT IDLE FOR OVER A YEAR BETWEEN THE TIME IT WAS BOUGHT BACK FROM THE ORIGINAL CUSTOMER TO WHEN IT WAS SOLD AS A CERTIFIED VEHICLE.

MY WIFE'S CAR WENT IN FOR TESTING MULTIPLE TIMES BEFORE ISSUE WAS FOUND. 2. HOUSING HEATING/COOLING CAUSES EXPANSION/CONTRACTION AND WARPING RESULTING IN A SMALL BUT CONSTANT LEAK LARGE ENOUGH TO CREATE A SMALL PUDDLE OR STREAM UNDER THE CAR. HOUSING HEATING/COOLING CAUSES EXPANSION/CONTRACTION AND WARPING RESULTING IN A SUDDEN CATASTROPHIC FAILURE RESULTING IN RAPID LOSS OF COOLANT AND CAUSING A VISIBLE LARGE PUDDLE UNDER THE CAR AND A WARNING ALERT TO APPEAR ON THE DASHBOARD.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE CONTACT ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V483000 (AIR BAGS), BUT THE VIN WAS EXCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.

PLEASE ADD TO LIST OF VW HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND INSIST VW PAY OR RECALL TO HAVE THEM FIX THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM. I PULLED INTO PARKING SPOT WHEN IT ALL STOPPED. GOOD THIS I WAS BACK HOME AND NOT STILL UP IN THE SIERRAS

TWO DEALERSHIPS STATE "THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO". 2. COOLANT - CONTINUOUS COOLANT SMELL IN CAB AND AROUND CAR AFTER DRIVING FOR ANY DISTANCE. DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED CAP, RESERVOIR AND HOSES. STATE, "NOTHING MORE TO DO UNTIL A RECALL COMES OUT".
LEAKING SUNROOF - VOLKSWAGEN WILL NOT WARRANTY. PURCHASED MY VEHICLE 2 YEAR AGO AS A BRAND NEW VEHICLE. THIS VW GOLF SPORTWAGEN WAS PART OF THE DIESEL EMISSION RECALL AND I PURCHASED IT AFTER THEY RELEASED THE VEHICLES AS A BRAND NEW VEHICLE. LESS THAN 200 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. HAD A HEADLINER STAIN FROM WATER LEAKAGE. VEHICLE SAT IN A LOT FOR 2 YEARS UNMOVED NEAR TREES WHICH LIKELY CAUSED THE LEAK. DEALERSHIP REPLACED HEADLINER. 1 YEAR LATER I NOTICED A LARGE STAIN IN THE BACK NEAR REAR HATCH. RESEARCHED ISSUE AND MAY WITH SAME MK7 BODY HAVING SAME ISSUES. TOOK BACK TO A DEALER AND THEY SAID LEAK WAS DUE TO "OUTSIDE INFLUENCE". VW OF AMERICA TOLD ME THEY WILL NOT WARRANTY HEADLINER DUE TO OUTSIDE CIRCUMSTANCES. I DO NOT PARK UNDER TREES AND THE "OUTSIDE INFLUENCE" IS FAULTY DRAIN LINES AND DAMAGES OCCURRED AT THE DEALERSHIP. VW WILL NOT WARRANTY LEAK. KEPT HEARING A CLICKING NOISE WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL. TODAY WHEN BACKING INTO A PARKING SPOT, THERE WAS A REAL LOUD CLICK, ALMOST LIKE A SNAP, AND MY AIR BAG ERROR MESSAGE IMMEDIATELY SHOWED UP AND NONE OF THE BUTTONS ON MY STEERING WHEEL WOULD WORK ANYMORE
UNDER NORMAL OPERATION THE RELEASE BUTTON FOR THE PARKING/EMERGENCY BRAKE CAN COME OUT AND RESULT IN THE PARKING BRAKE NOT CLICKING INTO THE ENGAGED POSITION. IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN WHEN THE CAR WAS UNATTENDED IT WOULD RESULT IN THE CAR ROLLING AWAY AND POSSIBLY KILLING OR INJURING SOMEONE.

THE WATER HAS FILLED THE SPARE TIRE/SUBWOOFER WELL FULL, DRIPPED THROUGH THE LIGHTING AND ELECTRICAL SWITCHES OF THE ROOF, DRAINED INTO THE DASH AND SHIFTER AS WELL AS MY LAP WHILE DRIVING. AND IT PRESENTS SO MUCH MOISTURE IN THE CAR THE WINDOWS WILL NOT DEFOG WITH THE A/C ON. VW MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENTS ALWAYS BLAME ME FOR DEBRIS CLOGGING THE ROOF DRAINS. I'VE SINCE BEEN INFORMED OF TWO TSBS ON THIS ROOF ADDRESSING THE FLAWED ENGINEERING. ALL THE DEALERSHIPS HAVE DONE IS CLEARED MY DRAIN HOSES AND ON THE 4TH RETURN, PRESENTED A $1,600 BILL FOR REMOVING AND REPLACING MY DRAINS. I REFUSED THE REPAIR AND HAVE DUCT TAPED MY ROOF TO PREVENT FURTHER WATER DAMAGE UNTIL THIS MATTER IS FORMALLY RESOLVED. VW CUSTOMER CARE HAS REFUSED TO PAY FOR THIS SERVICE CLAIMING IT IS A MAINTENANCE ISSUE. GIVEN WHERE I LIVE, THE CALIFORNIA CENTRAL VALLEY, DURING THE FIRST THREE YEARS OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE, WE RARELY HAD RAIN. APPROXIMATELY EVERY 8 MONTHS THE CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN TO A VW DEALERSHIP TO ADDRESS THE LEAKING ROOF.
CLOCK SPRING FAILED AT 52,000 MILES--AFFECTING BOTH THE AIRBAG AND HORN. VW REFUSED TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE REPAIR, DESPITE THEIR CLOCK SPRING RECALL ON MULTIPLE VW MODELS, THAT WAS INITIATED BY NHTSA INVESTIGATION.
I'VE BEEN THROUGH THREE TRANSMISSIONS SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR THREE YEARS AGO. NOW THAT ONE FAILED WHEN I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE IT WAS CONSTANTLY SLIPPING OUT OF 5TH GEAR AND IT WAS HARD TO SHIFT IT INTO A LOWER GEAR..I'VE NEVER HAD ISSUES LIKE THIS BEFORE I'VE BEEN DRIVING MANUAL FOR 7 YEARS. I'M WONDERING WHAT IS CAUSING ALL THESE TRANSMISSIONS TO FAIL.

PROBLEM NOTICED DECEMBER 12TH WHEN ONE BY ONE ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON INCLUDING THE AIR BAG, THE STABILIZATION SYSTEM, THE HEADLIGHT SYSTEM AND OTHERS. THEN WHEN I STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT, THE CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF 1ST GEAR. I ENDED UP HAVING TO HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED BACK HOME. THE NEXT DAY A MECHANIC SCANNED IT AND SAID THERE WAS A PROBLEM IN THE EMITIONS SYSTEM WHICH DISABLED THE CAR BY MAKING IT NOT ABLE TO DRIVE. I THEN HAD IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST VW DEALER WHO TOLD ME THAT THE WHOLE PROBLEM, INCLUDING THE FAILURE OF THE SAFETY SYSTEMS, WAS CAUSED BY A LEAK IN THE SUNROOF. WATER RAN DOWN THE A-PILLER AND SHORTED SOME WIRING. THEY GAVE ME A PRINT OUT WHERE VW ADMITS THAT THIS IS THE RESULT OF A PRODUCTION DEFECT BUT THEY SAID THAT IF THE DEFECT WAS NOT FOUND BEFORE THE WARRANTY RAN OUT THAT VW WOULD NOT ALLOW IT TO BE FIXED UNLESS I PAID THEM OVER $1,0000. AS IT IS, I HAD TO PAY THEM $240 TO TAKE THE TRIM OFF OF THE A-PILLER AND DRY THE WIRING OUT. THIS MADE THE CAR RUN NORMALLY FOR THE TIME BEING BUT NOW I AM AFRAID THAT IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN.
THE AD BLUE TANK HEATER IN MY CAR HAS GONE BAD AND WILL COST $1800 TO REPAIR. THIS HAPPENED JUST OUTSIDE THE 36,000 MILES WARRANTY WINDOW AT AROUND 40,000 MILES. THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE 2016 OR BEFORE. VW, IN ADDITION TO THE EMISSIONS ISSUES, REFUSES TO COVER THIS. THE CAR WILL NOT DRIVE UNLESS THIS IS FIXED. THIS MAKES THE VEHICLE NONCOMPLIANT WITH 49 CFR 571.114 STANDARD NO. 114 THEFT PROTECTION AND ROLLAWAY PREVENTION. IF THE IGNITION KEY IS REMOVED WITHOUT THE SHIFT LEVER BEING IN THE "P" PARK POSITION, THERE IS A RISK THAT THE VEHICLE MAY ROLL AWAY, RESULTING IN A CRASH THAT COULD INJURE PEOPLE AND DAMAGE PROPERTY.

THIS IS A 2015 TDI GOLF THAT SAT ON THE DEALER CAR LOT FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS. WE BOUGHT IT SPRING 2018. MINIMAL MAINTENANCE DONE ON VEHICLE WHEN CAR WAS PURCHASED. IN FACT, WE BOUGHT THREE. TIRES HAD FLAT SPOTS, AND HAD TO ALL BE REPLACED. MY DAUGHTER'S CAR DEVELOPED SOFT BRAKES. MINE AS WELL, AND NOT STOPPING WELL. AS I WAS TURNING MY STEERING WHEEL, I HEARD A CRINKLE SOUND AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. I REALIZED LATER THAT I COULD NO LONGER HONK THE HORN. WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE, THE CLOCK SPRING WAS REPLACED, HOWEVER THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN WITHIN WEEKS. I CANNOT HONK MY HORN AND I AM CONCERNED THAT MY AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
LEAKING PANORAMIC SUNROOF CAUSES MOISTURE AND MOLD ON THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. HAPPENED IN THE RAIN WHEN PARKED AND DRIVING.
JUST IN FRONT OF THE SHIFTER AND BEHIND THE CENTER STORAGE CONSOLE, METALLIC TRIM ON PLASTIC PEELED UP LEAVING A RAZOR SHARP EDGE. I DID NOT SEE THIS DEFECT. AS I PULLED MY KEYS OUT OF THE CONSOLE, THE SMALLEST FINGER ON MY RIGHT HAND WAS BADLY SLICED, CAUSING QUITE A LOT OF BLEEDING. HAD I BEEN DRIVING AT THE TIME, THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THE SURPRISE, PAIN, AMOUNT OF BLOOD AND THE DISTRACTION CAUSED BY THOSE THINGS. FORTUNATELY, I HAD JUST PARKED AT MY HOME AND WAS ABLE TO RUN INSIDE AND STANCH THE BLOOD FLOW.
LOUD KNOCK IS PRODUCED WHEN THERE IS BODY FLEX (TIGHT TURNS, SPEED BUMPS, CHANGES IN ELEVATION) ON THE DRIVER SIDE B-PILLAR. BROUGHT INTO AUBURN VOLKSWAGEN TO DIAGNOSE, AND WAS TOLD THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A BODY SHOP AND HAD THEM REPRODUCE THE NOISE. WAS TOLD IT IS LIKELY A BAD WELD FROM THE B-PILLAR TO THE ROOF, AND SHOULD BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY AS IT'S A SAFETY CONCERN. CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DEAL WITH ANY ISSUES CONCERNING THE BODY OF THE CAR. CONTACTED VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, AND HAVE BEEN PASSED AROUND BETWEEN CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENTS WITHOUT BEEN GIVEN ASSISTANCE.

AT 39K MILES, WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT, A CLICKING NOISE EMITTED FROM THE STEERING COLUMN, THEN WARNING LIGHT CAME ON FOR THE AIRBAG AND TRANSMISSION WITH THE CAR'S DISPLAY SAYING NOT TO DRIVE IT. SOME RESEARCH AND TESTING REVEAL THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL (INCLUDING AIRBAG, HORN, AND ALL CONTROLS MOUNTED THERE) AND THE CAR HAS BEEN SEVERED. A PART CALLED THE 'CLOCK SPRING' HAS FAILED UNDER NORMAL USE. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED ON THOUSANDS OF SIMILAR VWS AND THE NHTSA HAS OR HAD AN INVESTIGATION INTO THIS VERY ISSUE, BUT ONLY 2010-2014 MODEL YEAR CARS. AS A CONSEQUENCE THE AIRBAG AND HORN ARE NOT WORKING. VW SO FAR SAYS THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE ESTIMATED REPAIR IS OVER $500. FOR A PART THAT SHOULD ALMOST NEVER FAIL. IT IS A POOR DESIGN, AND A KNOWN ISSUE ACROSS THEIR MODEL LINE. VW SHOULD COVER THIS. THE LIABILITY ISSUES IF SOMEBODY GETS HURT DUE TO THE FAILED CLOCK SPRING AND DE-ACTIVATED DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG.
WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION, ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENT BUTTONS CONNECTED TO THE STEERING WHEEL, INCLUDING THE HORN STOPPED WORKING AND THE AIR BAG SENSOR LIGHT WENT ON , ALONG WITH TRANSMISSION SENSOR ERROR. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY IDENTIFIED THE CLOCKSPRING IN THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.
PREMATURE CLUTCH FAILURE AT 32,000 MILES (THIS CAR ALREADY HAD TWO DEFECTIVE PARTS AT 9,000 MILES - THE TIMING CHAIN COVER AND OIL LEVEL SENSOR.) CAR STARTED MAKING SCREECHING NOISE WHEN DRIVING, HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER WHO SAID IT WASN'T MAKING ANY SOUND WHEN THEY DROVE IT, AND THEY DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG. ONE WEEK LATER, BURNING SMELL FROM VENTS, NOW DEALER SAYS CLUTCH HAS FAILED.

THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIRBAGS NEVER HAVE DEPLOYED. VENTURA VOLKSWAGEN SAYS IT IS NOT UNDER RECALL NOR COVERED BY MY WARRANTY AND WILL CHARGE ME $615 TO FIX IT. I DROVE THE CAR TO A MEETING ON THURSDAY EVENING, JAN 4TH, 2018. PARKED IT IN A RESIDENTIAL HOME OFFICE PARKING AREA IN SANTA FE, NM AT 6PM. AT 6:10PM ANOTHER PERSON ARRIVED TO THE MEETING AND SAID SHE SAW FLAMES BY A RED CAR. IT WAS MY GOLF. SEVERAL OF US WENT OUT WITH POTS OF WATER AND A HOSE TO CONTAIN THE FIRE. MOVED THE OTHER VEHICLES AWAY FROM IT TO AVOID IT SPREADING. THE FLAMES CAME DOWN FROM THE ENGINE ONTO THE GROUND IN FRONT OF THE BUMPER. IT WAS SMOKY AND SMELT HORRIBLE. WE WERE ABLE TO CONTAIN THE FIRE. WHEN THE FIRE DEPT ARRIVED THEY USED A SPECIAL TOOL TO PRY THE HOOD OPEN AND USED THE RESIDENTIAL GARDEN HOSE TO DOUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP THE SMOLDERING AND REDUCE THE HEAT OF THE VEHICLE TO ASSURE IT WOULD NOT IGNITE AGAIN. I OWN A 2015 VW GOLF SPORTWAGEN WITH A LITTLE OVER 46,000 MILES. THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL BEARING HAS GONE BAD AND WAS DIAGNOSED AND REPLACE (OEM ONLY) BY A VW SPECIALTY GARAGE. THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF ON MY 2015 VW GOLF SE SPONTANEOUSLY EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH ON THE FREEWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 9:15 PM ON 2/27/2017 ON HIGHWAY 880 IN OAKLAND, ABOUT 1/2 MILE SOUTH OF THE ORACLE COLISEUM. NO CARS WERE NEAR ME AND I WAS NOT UNDER A BRIDGE, THUS NO EVIDENCE THAT THE SUNROOF WAS STRUCK BY AN EXTERNAL OBJECT. THERE WAS ALSO NO VISIBLE EVIDENCE OF DAMAGE TO THE GLASS PRIOR TO ENTERING THE VEHICLE, I CHECK EVERY TIME I BUY GAS. THE GLASS SHATTERED SUDDENLY IN A LOUD EXPLOSION THAT SOUNDED LIKE A GUNSHOT AND SHARDS WERE SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE AND COVERED MYSELF AND MY PASSENGER - ALTHOUGH MOST OF THE SHARDS BLEW OUTWARD AND LANDED ON THE ROAD. THE EXPERIENCE WAS EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING AND COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURIES. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES PER HOUR THE CAR CAME UP WITH AN ALERT OF ELECTRICAL FAULT STOP NOW AND THE POWERTRAIN SHUT DOWN WITH ZERO THROTTLE RESPONSE. THIS SHUTDOWN OFFERED NO WARNING AND NO "LIMP MODE", HAD I BEEN IN A BUSIER AREA THIS COULD EASILY HAVE LEAD TO A CRASH.

CALLED VW CUSTOMER SERVICE TO ASK ABOUT RECALL 69L6 WHICH DESCRIBES THIS PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD OUR VIN WAS NOT IN THE RECALL ALTHOUGH YOUR WEBSITE GIVES OUR MANUFACTURE DATE OF 18 JULY 2014 AS INSIDE THE RECALL RANGE. 2015 VW GOLF SPORTWAGEN TDI 2.0L THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 5000 MILES ON IT AND ALREADY TWICE I GET AN ENGINE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL) TO "REDUCE OIL LEVEL." I HAVEN'T EVEN TAKEN IT IN FOR ITS FIRST SERVICE YET AND NOW THIS. TOO MUCH OIL? I CHECKED THE LEVEL SEVERAL TIMES AND THE DIP STICK INDICATES THE LEVEL IS WITHIN TOLERANCE.
THE FIRST TIME, BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE IN PARKING LOT STARTED TO GO FORWARD AND THE CAR JUST SHUT OFF ON ITS OWN. IT HAS DONE THIS SEVERAL TIMES LEAVING ME IN IN HARMS WAY TRYING TO PULL OUT INTO TRAFFIC IT JUST SHUTS OFF ARBITRARILY NO TELLING WHEN ITS GOING TO HAPPEN. ALSO HAVE HAD PEOPLE IN THE CAR WITH ME WHEN IT HAS HAPPENED.[ KINDA LIKE PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE ] HAVE HAD IT TO THE DEALERS THREE TIMES INSIDE OF 2300 AND THEY HAVE FOUND NOTHING. ONE IN A PARKING SPACE BACKED OUT STARTED TO GO AND IT DIED. ONE TIME TURNING ON CITY STREETS . TO ME MIGHT BE FUEL PUMP OR SOMETHING ELECTRICAL.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE TO 30 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL AND VEHICLE WOULD VIBRATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE AXLE NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE AXLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE STEERING WHEEL CONTINUED TO VIBRATE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 800.
CAR HAS SHUT DOWN AFTER STOPPING 4 TIMES NOW STARTING IN JUNE OF THIS YEAR LAST INCIDENT WAS 11 SEPT 2015 TOOK TO KALAMAZOO VW SERVICE DID NOT FIND ANY FAULT CODES ALSO KEY FOB WILL NOT UNLOCK CAR WITHIN RANGE OR NOT START VEHICLE WILL STATE KEY FOB NOT IN RANGE WHEN TRYING TO START WITH KEY IN CAR.
I LEASED THE E-GOLF FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET AND SUDDENLY CAR SHUT DOWN. AN ERROR "ERROR:ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. STOP!" APPEARED. CAR STOPPED AND BLOCKED THE LANE. I CALLED VW SOS AND THEY CONNECTED ME TO 911. POLICE OFFICER CAME AND HELPED ME PULLING THE CAR TO THE ROADSIDE. THE WINDOWS AND MULTIMEDIA WORKED. TRIED TO PRESS THE POWER BUTTON OFF AND TURNED IT ON BUT SAME ERROR SHOWED. I WAITED FOR ONE HOUR TO TOW MY CAR TO THE DEALER. I GOT CAR BACK FROM DEALER 4 DAYS LATER, IN THEIR REPORT STATED " CHECKED FAULTS IN SYSTEM, FOUND P0C0100 DRIVE MOTOR A CURRENT HIGH. CONTACTED VW HELPLINE. VW HELPLINE ADVISED THESE FAULTS ARE RELATED TO CUSTOMER PRESSING START/STOP BUTTON WHILE DRIVING" , I'M PRETTY SURE I DIDN'T TOUCH THE POWER BUTTON WHEN DRIVING. AND THEY " CLEARED ALL FAULTS, SET BASIC SETTING FOR ELECTRIC DRIVE AND ROAD TESTED EXTENSIVELY FOR 90 MILES AND NO MALFUNCTION OCCURRED AT THIS TIME". I LIKE THE CAR'S DESIGN AND STILL DRIVING THE CAR DAILY BUT JUST REALLY REALLY WORRY ABOUT THE SAFETY.
WHILST DRIVING HOME AT APPROXIMATELY 6:30 PM DURING HEAVY FREEWAY TRAFFIC, APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH THE ELECTRONIC DRIVE SYSTEM OF THE VW EGOLF DIED. I LOST ALL POWER AND WAS FORCED TO PULL ACROSS THREE LANES OF TRAFFIC TO REACH THE SAFETY OF THE SHOULDER. WHILE NO ACCIDENT, THAT WAS MORE LUCK THAN ANYTHING ELSE AND GRACE OF OTHER DRIVERS ALLOWING ME TO DIRECTLY MOVE IN FRONT OF THEM. VEHICLE HAD CODE P32B2 AND P060C REPORTED BY VW REPORT AND REPLACED PARTS: 5QE-907-070-C AND 12E-998-152-A. DEALER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DESPITE MY CONTINUED REQUESTS IN TO THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. UPDATED 11/05/15 *BF THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER. IT HAS BEEN THERE SINCE JULY 28, 2015. THEY WERE STILL UNABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE AS OF AUGUST 26, 2015. THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO POWER AS THE BATTERY AND CHARGING SYSTEM FAILED AGAIN. I PURCHASED A 2015 VW GOLF TDI WITH 18" WHEELS AND LOW PROFILE PIRELLI TIRES AUGUST 2014. THIS VEHICLE WAS RE-ENGINEERED FOR THE US MARKET TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE UREA TANK THAT IS NEW AND SPECIFIC TO THE US TDI PLATFORM. ALL OTHER GOLF MODELS HAVE AN INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION SYSTEM WHILE THIS MODEL WAS DOWNGRADED TO A TORSION BEAM REAR SUSPENSION. THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED ON LOWER END MODELS WITH 16" WHEELS AND HIGHER PROFILE TIRES, BUT THE HIGH END VEHICLES HAVE THE 18" WHEELS AND LOW PROFILE TIRES AS STANDARD EQUIPMENT. ON APRIL 25, I NOTICED A SIDEWALL BUBBLE ON A FRONT TIRE. VW REPLACED BOTH THE TIRE AND BENT RIM AND I WAS TOLD THE OTHER 3 RIMS WERE BENT. THEN THE OTHER FRONT TIRE HAD A SIDEWALL BLOWOUT AND BOTH THAT TIRE AND WHEEL WERE REPLACED. THE OTHER WEEK I ENDED UP WITH A SIDE WALL NAIL IN A REAR TIRE. THIS TIRE WAS REPLACED BUT NOT THE WHEEL AND I WAS TOLD THAT ALL WHEELS ARE BENT, INCLUDING THE 2 NEW WHEELS. I HAVE JUST UNDER 18000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE, HAVE CALLED VW AMERICA AND WAS SENT THE SPEC SHEET ON THE CAR. I ASKED IF A CAR WITHOUT INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION WAS ENGINEERED FOR LOW PROFILE TIRES AND ASKED FOR SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN WHY I HAVE HAD 2 SIDEWALL ISSUES AND 6 BENT RIMS IN UNDER 18,000 MILES AND 11 MONTHS WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE OTHER THAN VW AMERICA SENDING THE SPEC SHEET. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND ASKED FOR THE SPECIFIC ENGINEERING APPROVAL OF LOW PROFILE TIRES WITH THIS SUSPENSION SYSTEM AND WAS TOLD VW AMERICA DOES NOT HAVE THIS INFORMATION AND WOULD NOT PROVIDE IT TO ME IF THEY DID.

THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. YOU INTENTIONALLY LEAVE THE VEHICLE ON TO ENSURE THE CABIN IS MAINTAINING A COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURE FOR YOUR PASSENGERS... MEANWHILE, THE VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN AND DISABLES THE CLIMATE CONTROL. YOU HAVE NOW LEFT YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS, ELDERLY, CHILDREN, PETS, ETC POSSIBLY IN A HOT VEHICLE WITH NO WAY TO MAINTAIN CABIN TEMPERATURE! PEOPLE, CHILDREN AND PETS DIE REGULARLY FROM CABIN EXTREME TEMPERATURES! PLEASE CONTACT VW AND TELL THEM TO REVERSE THIS PROGRAMING! A DRIVER/OWNER SHOULD HAVE CONTROL OVER THIS! I WAS TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MILES AN HOUR AND MY SUNROOF EXPLODED WITHOUT WARNING. TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE WERE IN THE MID 90'S, TIME OF DAY WAS 6:00 PM, I HAD AIR CONDITIONING RUNNING AND SUNROOF AND INTERIOR SHADE TOTALLY CLOSED. AFTER THE EXPLOSION, THE SUNROOF WAS BOWED FROM THE INSIDE OUT (CONVEX CURVE) AND THE SAFETY GLASS WAS SHATTERED IN WEBLIKE PIECES. I PULLED OVER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND I WAS MISSING GLASS FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOF ABOUT THE SIZE OF AN OBLONG WATERMELON.
I WAS IN HAYWARD ON THE 880 FREEWAY (FLAT, DRY ROAD) IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, IN THE HOV LANE GOING ABOUT 40 MPH, AND MY VW E-GOLF JUST SHUT DOWN AND SHOWED THE ERROR "ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILURE: STOP!". I HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO COAST 5 FEET OVER TO THE LEFT SIDE (CENTER DIVIDER) I COULD NOT MAKE IT COMPLETELY OUT OF THE LANE. CARS WERE LAYING ON THEIR HORN AND SPEEDING PAST ME WHILE MY BUMPER HUNG OUT A FOOT INTO THE LANE. THE CAR IS 3 MONTHS OLD. IT HAD A CHARGE OF 86 MILES WHEN IT HAPPENED, I HAD IT ON A CHARGING STATION IT SHOWED I CHARGED MY CAR ACCUMULATED (KWH): 29.523. THE RADIO, WINDOWS, BLUETOOTH AND ALL OTHER ELECTRICAL POWERED INSTRUMENTS STILL WORKED. I PRESSED THE POWER BUTTON OFF AND TURNED IT ON AGAIN , THE ERROR STILL REMAINED, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT "TURN ON".

WHEN I LET THE CLUTCH BACK OUT THE CAR ACCELERATED INSTEAD OF SLOWING BECAUSE THE CRUISE NEVER CANCELLED. IT WAS TRYING TO BRING ME BACK TO THE SET 60 M.P.H. SET SPEED. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, GANLEY VW NORTH OLMSTEAD OHIO, ON 6/8/15, AND AFTER THEY LOOKED AT IT I WAS TOLD THIS WAS "NORMAL" THIS WAS NEVER "NORMAL" WITH ANY OTHER CAR I HAVE OWNED AND IF SO IT DEFINITELY IS NOT A SAFE FEATURE.
RURAL ROAD IN FLORIDA, CRUISE CONTROL SET TO SPEED LIMIT OF 45 MPH. APPROACHING A SHARP CURVE, I DOWN SHIFTED MY MANUAL TRANSMISSION FROM 5TH TO 3RD TO SLOW DOWN TO AN APPROPRIATE SPEED OF ABOUT 35 MPH. WHEN I RELEASED THE CLUTCH, AND BEGAN STEERING INTO THE CURVE, THE CAR'S CRUISE CONTROL RE-ENGAGED AND I FOUND MYSELF STRUGGLING TO STEER AROUND THE CURVE AT 45 MPH. EXACT MODEL IS GOLF SPORTWAGEN TDI SEL WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION. VW'S OWN INSTRUCTION VIDEO SAYS THAT WHEN THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED THE CRUISE CONTROL DIS-ENGAGES AND THAT THE DRIVER MUST PRESS THE RESUME BUTTON FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL TO BE RE-ENGAGED. IN MY 50 YEARS OF OPERATING AUTOMOBILES, EVERY CAR WITH CRUISE CONTROL AND A MANUAL TRANSMISSION HAS OPERATED PER THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE VW VIDEO. UPON CAREFUL READING OF THE OWNER'S MANUAL I FOUND THE FOLLOWING DISCLAIMER: "CHANGING GEARS WHEN CRUISE CONTROL IS ACTIVE ... THE CRUISE CONTROL REDUCES ACCELERATION AS SOON AS THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS PRESSED, AND AUTOMATICALLY CONTINUE TO REGULATE SPEED AFTER A GEAR CHANGE." THIS NON-STANDARD BEHAVIOR MAY SOON LEAD TO PEOPLE BEING KILLED. *TR

THE DRIVERS SIDE HIGH BEAM IS NOT AIMED PROPERLY, IT IS POINTED BELOW THE CUT-OFF LINE OF THE LOW BEAM. THE HEAD LAMP ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN REPLACED BY THE DEALER TWICE BUT THE AIM WAS NOT IMPROVED. VOLKSWAGEN WAS CONTACTED, THEY EVALUATED THE SITUATION AND SAID THAT THIS WAS THE WAY THE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED AND SO COULD NOT BE FIXED. THE DEALER ALSO SAID THAT THEY LOOKED AT OTHER CARS OF THIS SAME MODEL AND THEY ALL OPERATED THE SAME. BOTH THE HIGH AND LOW BEAM REFLECTORS ARE MOUNTED IN A COMMON HOUSING AND THE ASSEMBLY ONLY HAS ONE ADJUSTMENT SO BOTH BEAMS MOVE UP AND DOWN BY THE SAME AMOUNT. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN DEFECT. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS ONLY ONE OF THE HIGH BEAMS IS ILLUMINATING THE ROAD. *TR

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Volkswagen Golf and Golf Sportwagen vehicles. The build of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition while the vehicle shift lever is not in "Park." As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
