When the vehicle was ~1.5 years old following its 10,000 mile maintenance, substantial thumping generated from the rear of the vehicle. Each time, the dealership attempted to resolve the problem finding issues with struts; however, it only went away in late March after having the vehicle in the shop for weeks at a time on 5 different occasions Nov 2018 - Mar 2019. I engaged Toyota HQ (800-331-4331) - filing report #1901092572 - requesting an exchange of the vehicle. This was denied and I was offered a 8 year warranty. *Due to COVID, I rarely drove this vehicle through 2020 and most of 2021, where to date, I have only ~34,000 miles on the vehicle. -On 21 Oct 2021, my wife was stopped at a gas station and attempted to start the vehicle. The vehicle would not start and the following lights came on without previous warning: 1)Braking Power Low, 2)Maintenance needed soon, & 3)Orange yellow triangle lit up with exclamation mark. My wife was stranded for 3 hours and the vehicle had to be towed. The dealership informed me that Toyota installed a generic battery into the vehicle (when being sold) that was only to have 4-5 years of life; however, my concern was that this vehicle had just completed maintenance and there was no warning of this upcoming issue. When repaired, I had to pay for the name brand (True Start) battery. -On 16 Jan 2022, after having driven the Highlander for 25 minutes, I started the engine while in a parking lot. While moving forward and the engine still going, the brakes and power steering went out. On the dashboard, the same lights that came on in Oct 2021, did so again. I had to let the vehicle coast (having no control) with my wife and child in the car through the parking lot. It came to a stop at the concrete parking curb stop at a store front. Toyota stated that since there was no check engine light that there was no code and they could not duplicate the problem. The vehicle was sent back to me with no resolution or explanation.
Front windshield cracked in 2 location due to stress. No impact of any kind. West Kendall Toyota in Kendall, Miami wants me to file Insurance and have repairs done by Safelite Autoglass. This is a Toyota Manufacturers problem. The new windshield should be OEM and needs quality front camera calibration. Kendall Toyota’s phone : 305 536 3255
2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER VIN: [XXX] I purchased my Highlander new in 2017 and I have had consistent electrical issues. The radio has consistently fluctuated between bass, treble, and off for no apparent reason. I have taken my vehicle to the dealer 4 times and still no change. I have replaced the battery 3 times although I only have 25,000 miles on 55,000mile tires, the tire treads are wearing quickly. I rarely go anywhere and when I do it is on smooth surfaced, well-maintained roads. All maintenance is completed at the dealership, including rotation and balancing. I really so annoyed and I see by the comments that I am not alone in these issues. I'm not even going to get into the plastic chrometek wheels. However, Toyota states there are no problems. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO DEFECTIVE SEATBELTS. THE CONSUMER STATED THE RIGHT REAR PASSENGER SIDE BUCKLE CUT THROUGH THE BELTED FABRIC. THE CONSUMER REQUESTED TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIRS.
I was driving home and a warning brake light came on which said breaking power low stop in a safe place, BSM not available. Car won’t start again, ABS light, traction control light, all wheel drive system, engine brake light, antilock brake system. All of these alerts are on the dashboard.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that upon purchase of the vehicle, she discovered a vertical crack on the bottom driver’s side of the windshield. The contact stated that the crack obstructed her vision while driving. The vehicle was returned to the dealer and the windshield was replaced. A year later while driving 60 MPH, a small pebble struck the windshield which cause another vertical crack on the bottom driver side of the windshield. Upon further investigation, the contact discovered two additional cracks in the same area as the original crack. The dealer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000
The vehicle simply would not start after I returned to my car from shopping. It had power but when I pressed the break and pushed ignition button multiple error messages came up that said "Charging system malfunction" then "Braking power low" then "SBS Airbag System Malfunction". The lights on the dash flickered, so i turned it off. When i turned it back on (before pressing the brake and pushing the ignition button to start) there was power, but the engine didn't turn over. My child and I were stranded at the grocery store waiting for the tow truck for over an hour, and then for a ride home. If this had happened while traveling further this would have put us in a real bind, and if it would happen while driving could be extremely unsafe. The car was towed to the Dealer (Russ Darrow in West Bend) who is claiming the battery needs to be replaced (i bought this vehicle 10 months ago- he said the cold cranking amps were at 520-540 at that time and were now at 297), he confirmed the alternator was healthy. As of now it looks like they will just be replacing the battery, so yes the vehicle system should be available for inspection upon request. My fear is that this could happen again after replacing the battery just like many other Toyotas that have had this exact same issue. There was no warning light that the battery was low. No indication of an upcoming maintenance issue. It happened abruptly.
The hands free calling feature has a serious echo when calling to the driver while on the road making it useless to use. It is California law states that calls made while driving must be hands free. This problem has existed since the car was purchased new. It forces the driver to handle incoming calls using a cell phone without the hands free while driving. My wife and I want Toyota to repair our car free of charge . My wife and I researched this problem on line and apparently this is a ongoing issue with Toyota’s 2019 and older. We want it fixed or we shall move forward with the lemon lemon law.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated upon starting the vehicle, she heard abnormal clicking sounds. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the water pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.
Left work on 10/4 to go to the bank, grab lunch, and the carwash. Went to the bank and grabbed lunch. Went to Mikes carwash to vaccuum out and wash my car. After vacuuming the car I went to start it and got nothing. A message of low braking power please pull to a safe location and check AWD system popped up. I sat there for over 30 mins trying to get the vehicle to start. It never started. It had to be towed to the Toyota dealership. The Toyota diagnostic revealed that I needed a new battery. Took $150 to figure that out, ok. Purchased a $200 battery and had it installed. Four days later went to get into the car and it would not start once again. Upon starting a whole bunch of lights flashed on the dash but the message that came up was low braking power, check AWD system. At this point the car would not start without a jump. I jumped the car using a jump pack. Drove the car to the shop (a different one this time) to have a diagnostic done. The diagnostic revealed no issue. At this point I have only had this vehicle 5 months and I am not impressed. As a matter of fact im thoroughly frustrated and disappointed. This vehicle has 44,200 miles on it but the amount of time, issues, effort, and funds I have had to contribute to this phantom problem is very disturbing. Like I literally get into the car and have to pray that it will start. And to get on here and see that this is a huge problem experienced by many others is even more frustrating to me.
The stop/start feature on the 2017 Highlander appeared to fail. In stop and go traffic, the vehicle stalled. And would not start. The vehicle started back up with a battery boost. This incident presented a danger to the person in this vehicle and other vehicles around it. The vehicle was brought to Toyota Service. They could not reproduce the issue. A fault was found in the battery, the battery was replaced. Approximately 11 days later. This vehicle came to a stop at a red light, stop/start feature engaged. The vehicle did not start back up, it stalled.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that the fuel pump failed. The contact stated that when the fuel tank was full, the vehicle failed to start-up. The vehicle was taken to a dealer however, the dealer had not performed a diagnostic test. The dealer cleaned the fuel injection system however, the repair did not correct the failure. The manufacturer informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V682000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 75,000.
It being 4 time that the car shut off by itself while My wife driving in the middle of road and it won’t start the first time happer last year, second tine around April or may, third time yesterday 8/31/21,and today 9/01/21
The car jerks upon acceleration. It is so pronounced that it causes whiplash in driver and passenger
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Transmission failure & power steering control replacement. Yes available to inspect How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? We were on a family trip with two young kids in the mountains and going very low speeds... maybe 10 miles per hour. Our car stopped working. In the middle of a rush hour in heat at the top of the mountain, we had to get from the far left lane to the far right to stop. While trying to get over, the car jerked, revved, and we almost got into accidents because I just couldn't get the car to go without delayed reactions and then jerked to a fast motion. VERY UNSAFE! At the same time, check engine light, ABD, and sensor lights flashed on. I got on the side to turn the car off and on again and tried to go a little at a snail pace speed and still the same thing happened. We had to get towed over 100 miles away to our home with young kids. When we got it looked at, the transmission company let me know we had to replace it and we had a unsalvageable transmission and we needed to purchase a new one. He also ,mentioned he was suspicious because he doesnt regularly get my type of car but coincidentally he has seen at least 3 with the same make model and even color in his shop in the last couple of months. The sensor lights were a completely separate problem that happened at the same exact time, very suspicious. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes on both issues Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? only transmission company and certified Toyota servicer Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Both warning lights appeared after the first jerking and dangerous switching lanes event. once we got over, all lights came on
My 2017 Toyota Highlander just stop working all of sudden, I can’t start the engine at all it says in the dashboard boaster power low/ park in the side in safe place. I was trying to start the engine it since it’s 102 outside and I have my baby with me. I search it online and find out that toyota has recall for the same problem but only for 2018 Toyota Highlander. I can’t even drive my car to the dealer/mechanic since I can’t even start it all. Driving with this type of vehicle with same problem is really danger. The toyota should check inspect all their vehicle first for safely of everyone.
Factory installed running board traction points melting, sticking to shoes, trip/safety hazard as well as potential for burns
Paint delaminating, corrosion risk, could lead to failure of hinges if progressed.
Vehicle stalled while attempting to cross a 4 lane divided road (on or about 9/3/20). Engine sputtered and completely loss power. Vehicle was pushed out of busy traffic by a Sherriff's Officer to a side road. Vehicle was then towed to the dealership. Messages on screen displayed “check AWD system, check BMS system, pre-collision malfunction, EPS failure “. Battery was replaced and codes were cleared and rescanned reporting no problems. On 9/16/2020 vehicle again began sputtering shortly after starting engine and while driving on a busy road. I was able to drive into a nearby parking lot with reduced power. Engine completely stalled and the display panel showed the engine warning light and to see dealer. Vehicle was towed again to the dealership. Technician performed diagnostic health check on vehicle and found that the fuel pump was not sending any fuel to the engine (0 PSI). They tested and checked all wiring and connectors. Inspected wiring and grounds for the fuel pump and ECU. Technician isolated issue coming from fuel pump relay. They replaced relay and rechecked system, test drove vehicle with no further issues noted. On 6/11/2021 vehicle stalled again shortly after start-up while attempting to leave a shopping mall. Vehicle was again sputtering and losing power. I was able to park vehicle in same mall. Messages displayed on panel: “traction control turned off, check engine, reduced engine power, visit your dealer, check AWD system”. Engine then completely stalled. Called for tow service and waited for three hours but tow truck never arrived. Was able to restart engine and drove vehicle to dealer. Dealer replaced fuel pump and assembly after a week of testing. On 6/19/21 after paying dealer for the repairs the vehicle sputtered and stalled once again while attempting to leave the dealer’s parking lot. Same display messages seen as described above. Vehicle now in dealer’s garage awaiting further diagnosis.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Highlander. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V682000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall repair. After the recall repair, the check engine warning light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the fault code reader indicated that there was a failure with cylinder 3. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be taken apart to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.
When turning on the car the emergency hybrid system states to put in P and take foot off brake. Car will not stop. When in car wash on neutral car would not go into drive and rolled out and was able to find spot but couldn’t turn off and back on. Has occurred multiple times. Multiple Warning lights on dash light up when it occurs.
UNABLE TO PUT MY CAR IN DRIVE GEAR. STARTED MY SUV WANTED TO GET TO REVERSE. I TRY MAYBE 20 TIMES BEFORE I GOT TO IT. IT WAS HARD TO MOVE RIGHT AND DOWN. I WAS PARKED I MY DRIVEWAY WAS STEPPING ON MY BRAKES. HAPPEN 4 TIMES YESTERDAY. HAVE NOT DRIVEN TODAY.
FIVE DIFFERENT TIMES FAILURE TO START THE ENGINE AND BATTERY APPEARS DRAINED WITH APPROX. 30K MILES. EACH TIME THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND EITHER IN MY GARAGE OR PARKED. JUMPER CABLES USED TO START THE CAR DID THE JOB THE FIRST TWO TIMES, THEN A POWERFUL PORTABLE BATTERY JUMPER WAS NEEDED THE NEXT TWO TIMES AND THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED BY AAA - TOLD ME THE OE BATTERY FAILED (NOT UNDER WARRANTY, SO IT COST ME OUT OF POCKET. NOW, THE 5TH TIME I AM WAITING FOR AAA AGAIN. THEIR BATTERY IS STILL UNDER FREE REPLACEMENT WARRANTY. THIS IS VERY POOR PERFORMANCE FOR A (I BOUGHT NEW) CAR THAT HAS JUST OVER 35K MILES AND LESS THAN 39 MONTHS OLD. ALSO, SEEING ALL THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND A RECALL FOR THE 2020 SAME MODEL, LEADS ME TO BELIEVE TOYOTA IS NOT AS RELIABLE AS THEY ONCE WERE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V682000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE RECALL REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. MY TRANSMISSION ALL OF A SUDDEN IS HARD SHIFTING AND WHINES. TRANSMISSION FLUID IS FULL OF METAL SHAVING AND DARK FLUID NOTICED. NO WARNING OF ANY KIND. NOW BEING TOLD IT NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION 6K MILES JUST PAST FACTORY WARRANTY. I HAVE READ THAT NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE THIS ISSUE BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED.
I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN A BELL SOUNDED AND ON THE DASH IT INDICATED THE CAR WAS OVER HEATING. I WAS GOING ABOUT 35 MPH THROUGH A TOWN. I HAD BEEN DRIVING THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING.
ON 3/8/21 I WAS DRIVING MY 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLAND APPROX. 13 MILES AWAY FROM MY HOME. I BEGAN TO SMELL SMOKE AS I WAS DRIVING AND THROUGH FURTHER INVESTIGATION I FOUND THE SMOKE TO BE COMING FROM THE CHARGING PORT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MIDDLE ARM REST. THERE IS A FUNCTIONAL CAP ON THIS PORT TO KEEP DEBRIS FROM FALLING INTO IT. I DID NOT SEE ANY DEBRIS IN IT AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. BUT WHILE CHECKING FOR THE SOURCE OF SMOKE I FELT HEAT COMING FROM THE PORT AND THEN IT MELTED TO THE FLOOR. ONCE THIS HAPPENED I PULLED OVER TURNED THE TRUCK OFF AND EXITED.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD GOING ABOUT 60 MPH, MY SUNROOF EXPLODED. NO CARS IN FRONT OF ME. NOTHING HIT ME. JUST A LOAD EXPLOSION. I PULLED OVER AND SAW THAT MY SUNROOF EXPLODED. IT WAS BULGING UPWARD, WITH A BIG HOLE IN IT.
IN MOTION BUT AT SLOW SPEEDS (<40MPH) COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER. ALL SYSTEMS FAILED, INCLUDING ENGINE, STEERING AND BRAKES. ERROR CODE P0087 INDICATE FUEL PROBLEM. FUEL PUMP? HAPPENED TWICE, ABOUT 40K MILES APART. ONCE IN CONSTRUCTION ZONE ON INTERSTATE AND ONCE ON VERY ISOLATED RURAL ROAD. THERE'S A WHOLE LOT MORE I COULD REPORT BUT IT'S A VERY LONG STORY. SEE UPLOADED INFORMATION.
I WAS OUT FOR HEADING HOME & MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. I HAD THE BRAKE PEDAL PRESSED & PUSHED THE START ENGINE BUTTON. THE VEHICLE JUST MADE A RAPID CLICKING NOISE. THERE WAS A "BRAKING POWER LOW/ STOP IN A SAFE PLACE" LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD. HAVING BEEN THROUGH THIS BEFORE AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE FOR 8 WKS I WAITED & TRIED TO GET THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE UP POSITION. TRIED STARTING AGAIN;RESULTS THE SAME. CALLED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP,WAS TOLD TO TOW IT IN FOR A DIAGNOTSTIC. AGAIN, I TRIED THE BRAKE PEDAL/ START SEQUENCE: NO LUCK. THE DASH MESSAGE CENTER LIGHT REAPPEARED IMMEDIATELY OVER-LAPPED BY "DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL AND PUSH ENGINE SWITCH TO START"(BRAKE WAS DEPRESSED). TRIED ONE MORE TIME TO START RESULTS THE SAME. THEN THE "CHARGING SYSTEM MALFUNCTION/ STOP IN A SAFE PLACE/ SEE OWNER'S MANUAL" LIGHT APPEARED IN THE DASH. FINALLY STARTED 3 HOURS LATER: I DROVE HOME. WENT TO LOCAL DEALER THEY SAID IT WAS THE BATTERY. WENT TO MY REGULAR DEALERSHIP. ENROUTE, THE MESSAGE CENTER ON THE DASH FLASHED BRIGHT RED WITHOUT WORDS(@ 40MPH). MY REGULAR DEALERSHIP TESTED MY BATTERY, IT WAS FINE. THEY RAN DIAGNOSTIC; THEY SAID THE RESULT WAS A BAD COMPUTER THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WAS GIVEN A LOANER VEHICLE. 2 WKS LATER THEY CALLED AND SAID AFTER MORE TESTING IT IS THE BATTERY, NOT THE COMPUTER.
PURCHASED THE HIGHLANDER AUGUST 2017. SEPTEMBER 2017 (8 WEEKS LATER) WE RETURNED HOME FROM AN 35 MILE TRIP AND PARKED. I HAD TO GO BACK OUT ABOUT 30 MINUTES LATER. WHEN I TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE I COULD NOT GET THE VEHICLE TO START. RECEIVED A "BRAKE POWER LOW, STOP IN A SAFE PLACE" LIGHT. IT TOOK MY HUSBAND 15 MINUTES TO GET THE BRAKE TO RELEASE AND BE ABLE TO MANUALLY PULL IT TO THE UP POSITION SO WE COULD TRY TO START IT. THE DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO RECREATE THIS INCIDENT.

AUTO STOP/START MALFUNCTION. IT WILL STOP THE ENGINE WHILE TURNING, AND WON'T START THE ENGINE WHILE RELEASE BREAK. IT HAPPENED OCCASIONALLY AT THE BEGINNING, NOW SEEMS GETTING WORSE. THE MECHANICS COULDN'T FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM. I SEE THERE IS A RECALL IN 2020 MODEL, BUT MY 2017 HIGHLANDER HAS SAME ISSUE.
THE TRANSMISSION FAILED WITHOUT ANY WARNING ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT 33,000 MILES ON THE CAR PUTTING THE WHOLE FAMILY IN THE CAR AT RISK OF COLLISION. THERE WAS NO ACTION FROM TOYOTA EVEN AFTER KNOWING THAT THEIR TRANSMISSIONS HAVE ISSUES. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY CASES LIKE MINE WHERE THE TRANSMISSION FAILS WITHOUT WARNING.
ON HIGHWAY TRAFFIC CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP WE SAT WITH FOOT ON BRAKE MAYBE 2-3 MINUTES WHEN I RELEASED BRAKES CAR WOULD NOT GO FOR A SECOND THEN STARTED GOING, NO NOISES THAT I RECALL. 2ND TIME AFTER I TURN AND START TO SPEED UP IT FEELS LIKE ITS SLIPPING OR REALLY SLUGGISH, THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED A FEW TIMES, IT SEEMS TO BE WHEN I FIRST DRIVE THE CAR IN THE MORNING. HAVE NOT NOTICED IT AS MUCH AFTER IT WARMS UP AND I DRIVE FOR A WHILE. I HAVE 44,000 MILES CURRENTLY AND DID BUY IT NEW.

INTERMITTEN FUEL PUMP PROBLEM, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARS SUV STALLS AND WILL NOT START
ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS AT 30,000, 40,000 AND 42,000 MILES WHEN DRIVING AT INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SPEEDS (AROUND 70 MPH) WITH CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE HAS SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING SWITCHED TO A LOW POWER LIMP HOME MODE RESULTING IN RAPID DECELERATION IN THE MIDST OF HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY TRAFFIC. I BELIEVE THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. MULTIPLE WARNINGS APPEARED ON THE DASH INCLUDING LOW POWER MODE, CHECK AWD SYSTEM, AND SEE YOUR DEALER. SHUTTING OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTING IT ALLOWED THE VEHICLE TO BE DRIVEN NORMALLY AGAIN. AFTER ALL THREE INCIDENTS THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. ALL 3 TIMES THE COMPUTER HAD STORED CODES FOR RANDOM MULTIPLE MISFIRES ALONG WITH A FEW OTHERS. ALL THREE TIMES THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THE CODES DID NOT POINT TO A SPECIFIC FAULTY PART THAT THEY COULD REPLACE, SO THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. AT MY INSISTENCE THAT SOMETHING BE DONE AFTER THE THIRD INCIDENT THE DEALER OPENED A CASE WITH THE TOYOTA TAS SYSTEM TO ASK FOR ASSISTANCE IN DIAGNOSES. THE ONLY RESULT OF THIS WAS TO SWITCH SOME OF THE COIL PACK POSITIONS TO SEE IF THE MISFIRES FOLLOWED THE COIL PACK. THE END RESULT IS THAT I HAVE TO DRIVE IT UNTIL IT FAILS AGAIN, PUTTING MYSELF AND OTHERS AT RISK. I ALSO OPENED A CASE WITH THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER, THEY CONFIRMED THIS WAS ALL TOYOTA WOULD DO AT THIS POINT.
HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE MULTIPLES TIMES TO TOYOTA DEALERS LOOKING TO ADDRESS A FRONT SUSPENSION PROBLEM. IT FEELS LIKE THE STEERING WHEEL IS SHAKING A LITTLE BIT WHEN IS BEING DRIVEN AT SLOW SPEED OVER UNEVEN STREET PAVEMENT SURFACE (SMALL POTHOLES) IT FEELS SOMETHING IN THE SUSPENSION IS LOOSE AND IT WOBBLES FROM LEFT AND RIGHT. I ALWAYS FEEL IT ON THE STEERING WHEEL. THEY HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE WHAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM ARGUING THEY DON'T FEEL ANY WOBBLING ON THE VEHICLE
2017 WITH JUST UNDER 20K MILES. VEHICLE STALLED FROM STOP WHILE AT A A RED LIGHT. WOULD NOT RESTART. ONLY CLICKS FROM START BUTTON. MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS. HAD BEEN DRIVEN ON CITY STREETS 5 MILES OF 6 MILE COMMUTE. CAR ALSO REQUIRED JUMP START TWICE IN PAST WEEK. DEALER EVALUATION ONE DAY PRIOR TO STALL " BATTERY CHECKS OUT FINE". I'M AFRAID THERE'S SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS GOING ON.
1 WEEK AGO, 7-26-20, MY CAR STALLED SLIGHTLY AND THEN AN ENGINE ICON APPEARED. A MESSAGE APPEARED FOR ME TO VISIT MY DEALER. I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER. THE LIGHT WENT OFF AS I ARRIVED THERE. I HAD TO PAY FOR A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I WAS TOLD TO MAKE SURE I WAS USING A GOOD GRADE OF GAS. LATER IN THE WEEK I GOT GAS AT A SHELL STATION. THE CAR WOULDN'T CRANK AT THE PUMP. IT KEPT TRYING TO TURN OVER. I GOT A MESSAGE TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE AND PUSH IGNITION. THEN IT SAID LOW BRAKE PRESSURE. I SAT THERE A FEW MINUTES AND TRIED AGAIN. I FINALLY GOT IT TO STAY ON. THE NEXT DAY I DROVE AROUND FINE FOR A WHILE WITH NO PROBLEM. THEN I TRIED TO GO BACK OUT AND IT WOULDN'T CRANK. IT WAS FULL OF GOOD GAS. THE ENGINE ICON CAME BACK ON. THEN THE MESSAGE ABOUT BEING HARDER TO STEER CAME UP. IT KEPT SAYING DEPRESS THE BRAKE AND PUSH IGNITION. I TRIED A FEW MORE TIMES AND GOT THE MESSAGE ABOUT PROBLEMS WITH THE SMART KEY SYSTEM. I CHECKED THE RECALLS FOR 2017 HIGHLANDERS AND NOTICED THERE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED IN MARCH 2020.
VEHICLE KEEPS STALLING WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING, AFTER STALLING THERE IS NO POWER, NEEDS A JUMP START TO GET GOING AGAIN. HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES, VEHICLE IS UNDER WARRANTY AND HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE AND THEY KEEP SAYING THERE IS NO ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE. *TR
PURCHASED NEW TIRES GOODYEAR AVIVA AT WALMART COVINGTON LA ON AUG 2019 THE CAR PULLED AS SOON AS I PURCHASED THEM AND THEY SAID TO GET ALIGNMENT. WELL AFTER 2 ALIGNMENTS AT TOYOTA AND A THIRD AT AUTOVILLE REPAIR SHOP THEY CAME TO CONCLUSION IT WAS BAD TIRES. THESE TIRES HAVE ONLY 2000 MILES ON THEM AND WALMART WONT CREDIT ANYTHING. THEY WILL KILL PEOPLE IF YOU DONT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM . I AM 70 YEARS OLD AND THESE ARE WORST TIRES I EVER OWNED PLEASE HELP PEOPLE STAY ALIVE AND RECALL THEM.
WHILE DRIVING IN A CITY STREET AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH I HAD MY WINDOW WIPERS ON DUE TO SOME POLLEN ON MY WINDSHIELD. WHILE WINDOW WIPERS WERE ENGAGED I APPROACH A DOWNWARD HILL AND HIT NOTING BUT SUN GLARE BLINDING ME I PUT MY BRAKES ON BUT BY THAT TIME MY SUV SLAMMED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM DID NOT ACTIVATE
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, WITHOUT WARNING THE VEHICLE WOULD VIOLENTLY SHAKE INTERMITTENTLY, LURCH AND ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING IN A PARKING LOT THE VEHICLE INADVERTENTLY ACCELERATED WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A CROSSWALK. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED DUE TO THE VEHICLE LURCHING AND SHAKING, SHE HAS SUSTAINED INJURIES TO HER TONGUE, NECK AND BACK. NO MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NEEDED. THE CONTACTED STATED THAT VARIOUS WARNING LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE, THE MOON ROOF WOULD RANDOMLY OPEN AND CLOSE, AS WELL AS THE VEHICLE WOULD SHIFT GEARS VIOLENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER WHOM PERFORMED A SOFTWARE UPDATE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THESE WERE ONGOING FAILURES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA OF GREENSBURG (4964 US-30, GREENSBURG, PA 15601 (724) 552-2761) WHERE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED AND DIAGNOSTIC TESTING RESULTS FOUND NO FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AN INSPECTOR FROM THE MANUFACTURER TOYOTA WAS TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, NO FINAL REPORTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE INSPECTOR STATED THAT HE WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING CALL BACK FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 23,000.
AT 62K MILES I NOTICED A LITTLE PINK ON GARAGE FLOOR AND HAD A MECHANIC LOOK AT THE PROBLEM AND FOUND I HAD A INLET WATER THERMOSTATIC HOUSING LEAKING. HE INSTALLED NEW ONE AT MY COST. POWER TRAIN WARRANTY WAS UP TO 60K MILES. FOUND A FEW DAYS LATER STILL LEAKING AND THIS TIME WATER PUMP. COMBINED COST FOR 2 REPAIRS AT LOCAL TOYOTA WAS RIGHT AT $1600. I BOUGHT THIS NEW AND PRIOR TO THIS I HAVE HAD GREAT SERVICE FROM MY TOYOTAS. THOUGHT CORPORATE TOYOTA WOULD TAKE CARE OF THIS BUT NO WAY. I HAVE SPOKE TO SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS OF THIS YEAR INCLUDING RAV OWNERS AND THEY HAD SAME ISSUE. HOPEFULLY TOYOTA RECALLS THESE WATER PUMPS BECAUSE NO NEW CARS WATER PUMP SHOULD GO OUT LESS THAN 100K MILES, THIS VEHICLE COST ME $48K AND WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA YESTERDAY TO CHECK TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL THEY SAID NO BUT THERE WAS A CAMPAIGN FIX ON A OIL HOSE, EVEN THOUGH I WAS REGISTERED WITH THEM THEY DID NOT NOTIFY ME OF THIS CAMPAIGN. I WILL FILE COMPLAINTS WITH VARIOUS ADVOCATES FOR CONSUMERS, THIS IS VERY UNSATISFACTORY ESPECIALLY FOR TOYOTA AND MY WALLET. BOOH TOYOTA..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING DOWN A MAJOR HIGHWAY OUR HIGHLANDER HAS TOTALLY LOST ENGINE POWER; PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR WOULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO COUGH AN SPUTTER; AND WE HAD TO GET OFF OF THE ROAD AND KILL THE ENGINE. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE ENGINE WOULD RESTART. ONLY ONCE WAS THE DEALER ABLE TO PICK-UP ANY CODE OR REASON AND IT WAS NOTED TO HAVE BEEN AN ENGINE MISS, AND THE TECHNICIAN SAID IT MAY HAVE BEEN A BAD FUEL ISSUE. I AM SEEING RECALLS FOR 2018 & 2019 TOYOTA AND LEXUS VEHICLES DUE TO A FUEL PUMP ISSUE AND I AM WRITING BECAUSE I BELIEVE OUR 2017 HIGHLANDER MAY HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. ONE STRANGE CIRCUMSTANCE WITH ALL 4 TIMES IS THAT WE WERE CHANGING LANES TO THE LEFT, THERE WOULD BE A SHORT BEEP AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND I AM ALSO WONDERING IF THE ISSUE COULD BE CAUSED BY ONE OF THE NEW SAFETY SENSORS. OUR LANE CHANGE SENSOR WAS NEVER ON, BUT OUR BLIND SPOT MONITOR (BSM) WAS ON AND AT ONE TIME THERE WAS A NOTICE TO A BSM ISSUE, BUT THE DEALER CANNOT FIND ANY ISSUES IN THE DIAGNOSTICS. THE FIRST 3 TIMES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD NOT COME BACK ON AFTER THE CAR RESTARTED AND THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND ANY CODES, BUT THE LAST TIME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON FOR 2 DAYS AND THAT IS WHEN THE DEALER DIAGNOSED AN ENGINE MISS. THIS LAST TIME MY WIFE HAD 18 WHEELERS ON BOTH SIDES OF HER AND ONE BEHIND HER. THANK GOD THE DRIVER BEHIND HER WAS PAYING ATTENTION.
I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE TOYOTA DEALER AS WELL AS APPLE THAT MY NEW PHONE, AN IPHONE 11 PRO, IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE COMPUTER SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE. THEY BOTH CLAIM THE OTHER NEEDS AN UPDATE, BUT NEITHER ONE HAS ANY IDEA WHEN THAT MAY HAPPEN. I CANNOT USE HANDS FREE BECAUSE THE PHONE CONTINUALLY CONNECTS AND DISCONNECTS TO THE CAR. THE SUGGESTION I GOT FROM THEM WAS TO TURN OFF MY BLUETOOTH AND NOT ALLOW THE PHONE TO CONNECT TO THE CAR. THIS SEEMS LIKE A SAFETY ISSUE WITH NO END IN SIGHT. THIS HAPPENS ANYTIME THE CAR IS ON SMD THE PHONE CONNECTS. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE FROM NOVEMBER ON...
29K ON THE CAR AND FOURTH TIME AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, THIS TIME THEY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION.
THE BATTERY FAILED AFTER WE OWNED THE CAR FOR 2 YRS AND 11 MONTHS (MILEAGE ~44,000). THE REPLACEMENT BATTERY COST ABOUT $450 INCLUDING INSTALLATION. THIS IS EXCESSIVELY EARLY FAILURE, AND WE ARE OUT A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITH THIS NEW OF A VEHICLE. IT TOOK 1 MONTH TO GET THE REPLACEMENT BATTERY. ALSO EXCESSIVE.
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AND HEAR A LOUD EXPLODING SOUND FROM MY VEHICLE. I THOUGHT SOMETHING EXTREMELY HEAVY WAS THROWN OR FELL ON MY CAR. WHEN I ARRIVED HOME, I FOUND A GAPING HOLE ON MY SUNROOF. THE GLASS WAS SHATTERED BUT THE OBJECT THAT "HIT" IT WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. AFTER CLOSELY EXAMINING IT, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THAT AN OBJECT HIT IT BASED OFF THE ANGLE THE SUNROOF METAL. THE METAL LOOKS LIKE THE EXPLOSION CAME FROM INWARD NOT OUTWARD.
THIS ENGINE BURNS OIL. 1/8 OF AN INCH PER WEEK. IF A PERSON DOES NOT CHECK THEIR OIL VERY OFTEN THEIR ENGINE WILL FAIL AND LOCK UP. THIS COULD HAPPEN WHEN DRIVING AND CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
I TURNED MY CAR TO PARK IN THE CHURCH PARKING LOT. I BELIEVE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, IT HAPPENED SO FAST, I AM NOT SURE. . ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON IT'S OWN! IT SCARED THE DAYLIGHTS OUT OF ME! SUDDENLY THE CAR JUMPED THROUGH A WOODEN FENCE AND OFF A FIVE FOOT DROP OFF TO THE STREET BELOW. I WAS LUCKY THERE WAS A PILE OF GRAVEL TO STOP ME. I PUT IT INTO PARK.THE AIRBAGS DID NOT GO OFF. I WAS NOT HURT. BUT I AM VERY STRESSED BY THE INCIDENT. IT WILL BE A MONTH BEFORE IT IS FIXED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER EQUIPPED WITH ACHILLES DESERT HAWK UHP TIRES, SIZE: 285/40R22 (NA). THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE SIDEWALLS WERE SEPARATING FROM ALL FOUR TIRES. THE CONTACT ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18T013000 (TIRES). THE CONTACT CALLED TIRE TOWN AUTO SERVICE (LOCATED AT 627 OLD SPANISH TRAIL, SLIDELL, LA 70458, (985) 643-7092) AND INFORMED THEM OF THE FAILURE. THE TIRES WERE NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE TIRE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000. *LN CONSUMER STATED PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS OF TIRE SIDEWALL SPLITTING. I HAVE TRIED EMAILING THE COMPANY TO FIND OUT ABOUT RECALL OR TO GET A REPLACEMENT. THESE TIRES ARE DEFECTIVE AND CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. *JB
I WAS IN A REAR IMPACT COLLISION IN MY HIGHLANDER. MY VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY ON A HIGHWAY, HAVING STOPPED TO AVOID A COLLISION, AND WAS HIT FROM BEHIND AT A RELATIVELY HIGH RATE OF SPEED (ESTIMATED 55-65 MPH). MY CAR WAS PUSHED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF IT WHICH CAUSED A CHAIN REACTION WITH SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES. IMMEDIATELY AFTER IMPACT I BEGAN TO FEEL NECK AND BACK PAIN AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. PRIOR TO TRANSPORT, WE NOTICED THAT MY HEADREST HAD BROKEN FREE IN THE IMPACT AND WAS LAYING ON THE BACK FLOORBOARD.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS PARKING THE VEHICLE, IT SUDDENLY SPED FORWARD, DROVE OVER A MEDIAN, AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE OR PROCESS A REQUEST FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE REPURCHASED. THE CONTACT WAS UNSURE OF WHICH OPTION TO TAKE. DARCARS TOYOTA FREDERICK (5293 BUCKEYSTOWN PIKE, FREDERICK, MD 21704, (301) 696-6300) WAS CONTACTED, BUT DID NOT DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,680. *BF MANUFACTURE WAS NOTIFIED.*JB
THE VEHICLE STALLED TWICE ON ME AT A RED LIGHT. NO POWER TO STEER. THIS BOTH HAPPENED AT A CITY NEAR WASHINGTON DC. HAD MY BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR CHECKED . BOTH CAME BACK AS IN GREAT CONDITION. ALMOST GOT HIT TWICE FROM BEHIND CAUSE OF THE STALLING.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, VEHICLE MOTOR STOPPED. HAD TO STEER TO THE SHOULDER OF HIGHWAY. WAS ABLE TO TURN VEHICLE ON/OFF, SEEMED TO RESET CAR. ABLE TO DRIVE. WITHIN 250 MILES OCCURRED AGAIN. THIS IS THE SECOND COMPLAINT WITH THIS VEHICLE. LAST YEAR, CAR AUTOMATICALLY DECCLERATED TO 40 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE ON CRUISE CONTROL, WOULD NOT GO ABOVE 40 MPH. VERY DANGEROUS. CAR TAKEN IN TO DEALERSHIP FOR 4 DAYS FOR QUESTS DUST ON SOME KIND OF ELECTRONIC BOARD.
MY VEHICLE HAS APP. 6500 MILES ON IT. THE STEERING HAS A HERKY JERKY FEELING TO IT AT TIMES AND NOW IT'S STARTED MAKING A POPPING NOISE THAT I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT'S COMING FROM OR IF IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE STEERING. ALL THIS HAPPENS WHEN I'M DRIVING ON ANY TYPE OF SURFACE. WHEN I HAD THE TIRES ROTATED IN JUNE, I WAS NOT INFORMED OF ANY PROBLEM BUT THERE IS CLEARLY SOMETHING GOING WRONG. IT'S A LITTLE DIFFICULT STATING A STARTING TIME BUT IT HASN'T GONE AWAY.
ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH I HIT A PIECE OF WOOD ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 72 MPH. THE WOOD WAS THE SIZE OF A TYPICAL PIECE OF FIREWOOD. MY TIRE INSTANTLY WENT FLAT AND I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY. UPON INSPECTION, I SAW THAT THE RIM BROKE INTO TWO PIECES. ESSENTIALLY, WHILE I WAS PULLING OVER, I WAS DRIVING ON A 1/4" LIP OF BROKEN WHEEL RIM. I WAS SHOCKED THAT THIS COULD EVEN HAPPEN. THIS IS REMARKABLY DANGEROUS AND COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SOMETHING MUCH MORE HARMFUL THAN A FLAT TIRE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT MATERIAL THIS RIM IS MADE OF. DOES TOYOTA BELIEVE IT BROKE BY DESIGN OR THAT FAULTY MATERIALS WERE USED? HOW MANY OTHER INSTANCES LIKE THIS HAVE BEEN REPORTED?
I PURCHASED A TOYOTA HIGHLANDER IN APRIL 2017 FROM THE JIM COLEMAN DEALER IN BETHESDA, MARYLAND. SINCE THEN, THIS TERRIBLE DESIGNED CAR IS HURTING ME AND MY FAMILY. IN THE BACK OF THE CAR, THE REAR LIGHT COVERS STICK OUT ABOUT 3 INCHES, THE EDGES ARE AS SHARP AS A KEEN KNIFE (PHOTOS ATTACHED). WHEN I UNLOAD STUFF FROM THE TRUNK, IT OFTEN HURTS ME. I HAVE TRIED TO BE VERY CAREFUL. I ALSO REMINDED MY TEENAGE SON WITH CAUTION. HOWEVER, IT STICKS OUT TOO MUCH AND IS TOO SHARP. IT IS HARD TO AVOID. IT KEEPS HURTING. FOR EXAMPLE, THREE MONTHS AGO, ON AN EVENING IT WAS DARK AND RAINING, AT A COSTCO PARKING LOT, WHEN I UPLOADED GROCERIES ONTO THE CAR, MY RIGHT ARM AND JOINT WERE SUDDENLY HIT BY THIS SHARP CUTTING EDGE OF THE REAR LIGHT COVER. THE KEEN EDGE CUT MY ARM, AND THE STICK OUT PART BADLY HURT MY JOINT (PHOTOS ATTACHED). I COULD NOT RAISE MY ARM. THREE MONTHS HAVE PASSED; HOWEVER, MY JOINT IS STILL PAINING. I WENT TO JIM COLEMAN DEALER AND POINTED OUT THE DANGER PART IN THE REAR. I HAD THEIR MANAGERS AND STAFF TO FEEL BY PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON THE KEEN EDGE. THEY ALL ADMITTED IT IS BAD DESIGN AND EASY TO INJURE PEOPLE. BUT THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I ASKED IF THEY COULD REPORT INCIDENTS/CASES TO MANUFACTURERS, AND HAVE IT IMPROVED. THEY SAID THEY SELL CARS ONLY. I RANDOMLY TOOK PHOTOS OF OTHER MADE OF CARS (PHOTOS ATTACHED). NONE OF THEM STICK OUT A KNIFE LIKES HIGHLANDER. IT IS A NIGHTMARE WHEN USING THIS HIGHLANDER DAILY. *JS

THE SUNROOF IN OUR 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HYBRID JUST EXPLODED. IT WAS 80 DEGREES OUTSIDE. WE WERE DRIVING ON A PAVED, 2 LANE HIGHWAY. NO ONE ELSE WAS ON THE ROAD. THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSIVE SOUND. MY HUSBAND THOUGHT WE HAD BEEN SHOT; I THOUGHT THE BACK OF THE CAR HAD FALLEN OFF. WE PULLED OVER AND INSPECTED THE CAR. THERE WAS A LARGE HOLE (ABOUT 10 INCHES ACROSS) IN THE SUNROOF. SHATTERED GLASS FILLED THE INTERIOR SUNROOF COVER. THE GLASS WAS PUSHED UP, NOT DOWN LIKE YOU WOULD EXPECT IF SOMETHING HIT THE GLASS.
CRUISE CONTROL ON SPEED AT 45 MPH, LIFTED CRUISE LEVER 5 TIMES TO POSTED 50 MPH SPEED GOING ONTO INTERSTATE APRON/BRIDGE. LIFTED THE CRUISE CONT LEVER AND HELD TO ACCELERATE TO POSTED SPEED OF 60. RELEASED LEVER AT 60 MPH, BUT NOTICED CAR STILL ACCELERATING. PULLED ON LEVER TO CANCEL WHEN CAR WAS AT 75 MPH. CAR HAS 19,850 MILES
MY TOYOTA HIGHLANDER WOULD NOT GO INTO PARK. THE SUV LUNGED FORWARD OVER CURBING AND INTO BUILDING. THEN WENT VIOLENTLY INTO REVERSE AND INTO A UNCONTROLLABLE SPIN. THEN THE SUV WENT VIOLENTLY INTO DRIVE AND JUMPING OVER A CURBING AND INTO A DITCH AND WAS SITTING ON TOP OF A NATURAL GAS LINE. DURING THIS WHOLE TIME I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKE AND PUSHING THE IGNITION SWITCH TRYING TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE. THIS WAS DONE IN A PARKING LOT AS I WAS TRYING TO PARK. *DT *TR
THE VEHICLE WAS HIT BY THE LEFT SIDE AND THE AIRBAGS DID NOT RESPOND
CAR STALLED HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN 5 TIMES AT PARKING LOT - GAS STATION - HOME - RESTAURANT - CAR WASH CAR HAS STOPPED WHILE DRIVING ON MAIN STREET 1 TIME
INTERMITTENT LOW SPEED THROTTLE DOES NOT RESPOND, THEN SUDDENLY "CATCHES" AND RAPIDLY ACCELERATES ALMOST CAUSING ACCIDENT. HAPPENED 4 TIMES SO FAR. REPORTED TO PIERCEY TOYOTA AT EACH OF LAST 2 SERVICES. THEIR RESPONSE IS TECHNICIAN DROVE CAR AND CANNOT DUPLICATE.
ON SATURDAY APRIL 27 AT 2 PM I PUT MY CAR IN PARK AND WAS GETTING OUT. THE CAR STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS AND AS I WENT TO REACT WAS KNOCKED DOWN AND PINNED UNDER THE FRONT LEFT TIRE OF THE CAR. MY THREE CHILDREN WERE IN THE BACK WATCHING THEIR MOTHER LYING ON THE GROUND HELPLESS AND SCREAMING FOR HELP. THANK GOD TO GOOD SAMARITAN'S THEY LIFTED THE CAR OFF OF ME WHILE I WAITED FOR THE EMS TO ARRIVE. SEVERAL WITNESSES SAID THE CAR WAS IN FACT IN PARK AND THIS SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED. I AM SEVERELY SORE AND INJURED AND THIS SHOULD NOT EVER HAPPEN. THIS HAPPENED ON HYLAN BLVD. PARTY CITY IN STATEN ISLAND NEW YORK.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE COFFEE CUP ICON DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DURING THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HUDSON TOYOTA (599 ROUTES 440 SOUTH, JERSEY CITY, NJ, 07305, (201) 201-5483). THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE, REPLACED THE ENGINE OIL, REPLACED THE FILTERS, AND ROTATED THE TIRES. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT A METAL FRAGMENT WAS LOCATED IN THE MOTOR AREA; HOWEVER, THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO REMOVE THE METAL OBJECT THAT WAS LOCATED IN THE MOTOR. THE DEALER CONCLUDED THAT THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,966.
SINCE IT HAS BECOME COLDER IN THE MIDWEST AROUND NOVEMBER 2018, I CAN HEAR A CLUNK OR A 'THUNK' KIND OF SOUND WHEN I MAKE A COMPLETE STOP OR PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE. THE SOUND IS COMING FROM THE BACK, THE AREA WHERE THE BRAKES ARE, BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE. THIS IS IN MY 2017 HIGHLANDER AWD XLE. I HAVE ADDRESSED IT WITH AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA SERVICE DEALER MANY TIMES BUT NOTHING HAS BEEN 'FOUND' BY THEM. THEY ADJUSTED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE SHOES AND LUBRICATED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE PARTS, BUT NOTHING HAS FIXED IT. THE SOUND KEEPS COMING BACK. I HAVE ALSO FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS. THE CASE IS NOW CLOSED DUE TO THE SERVICE DEALER STATING THE SOUND IS NOT A 'DEFECT' AND THEY HAVE TO BASICALLY WAIT FOR MORE COMPLAINTS TO TAKE ANY ACTION. I CAN HEAR THIS SOUND ANYWHERE FROM 10 TO 30+ TIMES A DAY WHEN I DRIVE AROUND IN A CITY AND SUBURBAN SETTING, WHERE I AM STOPPING AT MANY STOP SIGNS AND RED LIGHTS. IT IS LOUD ENOUGH TO HEAR OVER SOME LOW TO MEDIUM LOUD MUSIC PLAYING. IT ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ENGAGING. I AM WORRIED THE BRAKES WILL FAIL OR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WILL ENGAGE WITHOUT ME SETTING IT. I HAVE SMALL CHILDREN IN THE CAR WITH ME MOST OF THE TIME. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.
I STOPPED AT MY NEIGHBORS HOUSE TO GIVE HER SOMETHING,I LEFT THE ENGINE RUNNING WHEN I WENT IN TO HER HOUSE AS SOON AS I WENT INTO HER HOUSE I HEARD A NOISE LOOKED OUT AND COULDN'T SEE THE CAR,I WENT OUT SIDE AND THE CAR HAD JUMPED IN TO GEAR AND WENT INTO HER GARAGE ( THE DOOR WAS OPEN) THE CAR HIT HER BIKE,GOLF CLUBS THERE WAS A 2X4 ON A CHAIR THE CAR HIT THE 2X4 AND THEN THE OTHER END OF THE 2X4 HIT HER WASHING MACHINE WITCH STOPPED THE CAR.THE DOOR WAS LOCKED SO I WENT HOME (3 HOUSES FROM HER HOUSE) TO GET THE OTHER SET OF KEYS THE CAR STILL WOULDN'T UNLOCK SO I USED THE THE KEY THAT IS IN THE REMOTE CONTROL TO UNLOCK IT AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF.I CAN'T BELIEVE THE CAR LOCKED BECAUSE THE KEYS WERE IN MY PURSE THAT WAS IN THE CAR.THE 2X4 WENT INTO THE ENGINE AND A TOW TRUCK HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE GARAGE.I CAN'T BELIEVE THE CAR JUMPED INTO GEAR AND MOVED ON ITS OWN. AT ONE TIME WHEN WE HAD AND OIL CHANGE MY HUSBAND TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT WHEN WE PUT THE CAR IN GEAR THE CAR WOULD MAKE A CLUNK NOISE AND HE SAID THEY ALL DO THAT. MAYBE THEY DO BUT I WOULDN'T THINK SO AFTER WHAT HAPPENED.
STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG IS HOT WHEN DRIVING
I WAS DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE WITH DYNAMIC SPEED CONTROL ON. THE CAR SLOWED APPROPRIATELY TO MATCH THE SPEED OF THE THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF ME. SUDDENLY SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES APPEARED: MASTER WARNING LIGHT, CHECK ENGINE, CHECK AWD, GO TO TOYOTA DEALER, ENGINE POWER LOSS.THE CAR SLOWED TO ABOUT 35 MILES AN HOUR (IN A 65 MPH AREA) WHILE TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME WAS AT (OR ABOVE) THE SPEED LIMIT. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET TO THE SHOULDER AND TURN THE CAR OFF. I TOOK A FEW MINUTES TO USE MY SMARTPHONE TO FIND THE NEAREST DEALER AND PLANNED TO GO OFF THE EXIT (WHICH WAS JUST A FEW YARD AHEAD) AND TRY TO MAKE IT TO THE DEALER ON SIDE ROADS. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR ALL LIGHTS AND WARNINGS WERE OFF AND THE CAR DROVE WITHOUT INCIDENT UNTIL I REACHED THE DEALER NEAR MY RESIDENCE, ABOUT 100 MILES AWAY. THE SERVICE REP AT THE DEALER ADVISED I HAD TRAVELED TOO FAR SINCE THE INCIDENT FOR THEIR COMPUTER ANALYSIS TO WORK AND HE HAD NO ADVICE EXCEPT TO GO TO THE NEAREST DEALER IF IT EVER HAPPENED AGAIN. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SOME INFO ON HOW TO AVOID SUCH AN INCIDENT AGAIN.
SEVERAL INSTANCES WITH VEHICLE MOVING ON A CITY STREET LESS THAN 5 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN INTO A SIDE STREET THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL ENGINE POWER AT THE GAS PEDAL. ATTEMPTS TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL HAS NO AFFECT, THEN AFTER ABOUT 5-8 SECONDS THE VEHICLE RESPONDS TO THE GAS PEDAL AND STARTS MOVING. I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WHEN MOVING SLOWLY ON A CITY STREET AND ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE LANES, WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LANE CHANGE THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL POWER FOR 5-8 SECONDS AND THEN WILL START TO RESPOND TO THE GAS PEDAL. THEN RESPONDS TO THE GAS PEDAL. THIS IS POTENTIALLY A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN AS I'M UNSURE IF THE CAR WILL GO OR NOT WHEN THIS OCCURS. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE BACK TO TOYOTA'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT TWO TIMES FOR THIS PROB LEM AND THEY REPEATEDLY TELL ME THAT THEY CAN NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THAT THE VEHICLE IS OPERATING NORMALLY.
SITTING IN THE CAR WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN THE PARK POSITION, MOTOR AND ACCESSORIES OFF, THE TAILGATE OPENED ON ITS OWN SIX TIMES IN A 45 MINUTE PERIOD. EACH TIME WE CLOSED THE HATCH WITH THE BUTTON ON THE DASH. WHEN WE RETURNED HOME AND PARKED IN THE GARAGE, THE DOOR OPENED AGAIN BY ITSELF WITHIN A TWO HOUR PERIOD. ALL KEYFOBS WERE IN THE HOUSE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AT NIGHT, A CRACKING NOISE WAS HEARD ON THE ROOF FOLLOWED BY A LOUD EXPLOSION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SUN ROOF WAS SHATTERED, BUT DID NOT COLLAPSE UNTIL THE FOLLOWING DAY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA OF PHARR (956-815-2285, LOCATED AT 1625 W EXPY 83, PHARR, TX 78577) WHERE THE DEALER INSISTED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A FALLING OBJECT. THE CONTACT WAS PROVIDED AN ESTIMATE FOR INSURANCE PURPOSES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 24,800. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILED/QUIT WORKING AT A STOP LIGHT IN CHEYENNE, WYOMING 28 DECEMBER 2018 WITH ONLY 25,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. I HAD IT TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS.
WHILE COMING TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT, THE VEHICLE STARTED JOLTING LIKE IT WAS GOING TO SHUT OFF. ONCE AT A FULL STOP, THE CAR DID NOT SHUT OFF. INSTEAD, ONCE I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE BREAK, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. I SHIFTED INTO PARK, BACK TO DRIVE, REVERSE, AND EVEN MANUAL BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I WAS STUCK ON A ROAD WHERE CARS DRIVE 60-70 MPH IF THE LIGHT IS GREEN I WAS AFRAID THAT I WOULD BE READ-ENDED. I WAS HELPED BY A GOOD SAMARITAN OFF THE ROAD AND WAS FORCED TO TOW THE VEHICLE TO MY HOUSE. NEXT MORNING, THE CAR STILL WOULD NOT MOVE AND WAS FORCED TO TOW IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. OUTSIDE OF SOME IRREGULAR DOWN-SHIFTING, THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. ULTIMATELY, THE SYSTEM WAS REBOOTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO ME AFTER I TEST DROVE IT WITH THE SHOP FOREMAN. BECAUSE THE PROBLEM WAS NOT DIAGNOSED, I FEEL UNSAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND AFRAID THAT PROBLEM MAY REOCCUR, LEAVING ME IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE DEALERSHIP ITSELF WAS VERY HELPFUL BUT THEY RELIED ON CORPORATE TOYOTA TO GUIDE THEM WITH DIAGNOSING AND FIXING THE PROBLEM. IT SEEMS THEY CAME UP SHORT.
ON SUNDAY OCT 21 2018, THE DRIVER HAD JUST LEFT THE OLIN REST AREA IN NORTH CAROLINA, HEADING NORTHBOUND ON RT 77. AFTER DRIVING FOR A LITTLE BIT THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATION UNINTENTIONALLY BY ITSELF. AND THE CAR STARTED TO ZIG ZAG ACROSS THE HIGHWAY LANES WITHOUT THE DRIVER TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. THE DRIVER TRIED TO PRESS ON THE BRAKE BUT IT WAS NOT EFFECTIVE. THE CAR THEN GRAZED AN HIGHWAY GUARDRAIL AND IT PARTIALLY RIPPED OFF THE REAR LEFT SIDE AND REAR BUMPER. THE DRIVER KEPT PRESSING THE BRAKE WITHOUT EFFECT WHILE SWERVING ACROSS THE LANES. THEN SUDDENLY THE BRAKES STARTED TO WORK AND THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO BRING THE CAR TO A STOP ON THE RIGHT SHOULDER. THE DRIVER PUT IT INTO PARK BUT THE ENGINE KEPT REVVING AT HIGH RPM UNTIL THE DRIVER TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I THINK THE CAR HAD A SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION INCIDENT DUE TO THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL. IN ADDITION, I THINK THE ZIG ZAG WAS DUE TO THE ELECTRONIC TRACTION/ STABILITY CONTROL, SENDING EXCESSIVE POWER TO A WHEEL ON A PARTICULAR SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHEN IT DIDN'T NEED IT.
TAKATA RECALL. STRANGE NOISES AND FLASH GREEN LIGHT APPEAR ON DISPLAY, AFTER 1/4 MILES FROM PARKING LOT, THE CAR SPEED UP BY ITSELF, THE PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM (PCS) IS NOT WORKING, BRAKE ASSIST IS FAILED, THE DRIVER CANNOT MANUALLY BRAKES THE CAR.
BOUGHT THIS 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER NEW FROM DEALER IN DENVER. 400 MILES ON VEHICLE. THE WINDSHIELD WAS CRACKED SEVERELY IN THE FIRST 1000 MILES FROM MINOR STONES HITTING THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD, REQUIRING REPLACEMENT- OEM WITH CAMERA, HEAT, RADAR SENSORS FOR $1800. NOW, THAT SECOND WINDSHIELD HAS CRACKED AGAIN, REQUIRING A 3RD WINDSHIELD INSTALLED AT 27,000 MILES. TOYOTA SLANTED THE ANGLE OF THE FRONT HOOD ON THIS VEHICLE TO REDUCE DRAG AND IMPROVE GAS MILEAGE. AS A RESULT, MINOR STONES ON THE ROAD ARE THROWN VIOLENTLY INTO THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD LEADING TO CRACKS WHICH START FROM THE BASE OF THE GLASS AND QUICKLY CRAWL UP AND ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD REQUIRING REPLACEMENTS. THIS IS NOT SAFE. I HAVE HAD 3 BRAND NEW HIGHLANDERS IN DENVER OVER 12 YEARS- A 2009 HIGHLANDER HYBRID LIMITED, A 2015 HIGHLANDER LIMITED AND THIS 2017 HIGHLANDER LIMITED- AND THIS IS THE FIRST VEHICLE WHERE THE WINDSHIELD BARELY LASTS A FEW THOUSAND MILES BEFORE CRACKING AND REQUIRING A NEW WINDSHIELD. THESE WINDSHIELDS ARE HEATED, WITH CAMERA AND RADAR SENSORS AND OEM ONLY SO REPLACING THESE IS NOT CHEAP- $1800 PER WINDSHIELD FROM TOYOTA. THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. PROTECTION FOR THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD NEEDS TO BE ADDED. THE CRACKS ALWAYS HAPPEN IN THE SAME SPOT.
TWICE IN THE SPAN OF 1 YEAR AND 6 MONTHS OWNED CAR FOR 2 YEARS 1ST- SHATTERED WINDSHIELD- GLASS CAME INSIDE THE CAR OF HYLANDER WHEN ROCK HIT WINSHIELD- ONLY 1 YEAR OLD. CAR WAS IN MOTION ON A CITY ROAD SPEED LIMIT 35 MPH 2ND TIME: SHATTERD WINSHIELD 1 YEAR 3 MONTHS LATER FROM ANOTHER ROCK. THE CAR WAS IN MOTION ON A CITY STREET SPEED LIMIT 45 MPH
TRANSMISSION FAILURE. TOYOTA REPLACED ENTIRE TRANSMISSION
THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT ALARM ON PEOPLE WALKING BEHIND THE VEHICLE WHEN BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT IN A PARKING LOT. IT ALSO DOESN'T ALARM ON A VEHICLE BACKING TOWARDS YOU DIRECTLY BEHIND THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS IN REVERSE JUST MOVING OUT OF MY PARKING SPACE, IT HAPPENED TWICE RECENTLY. IT IS AN UNUSUAL SITUATION WHICH IS WHY I HAVEN'T REPORTED IT EARLIER. THE CAR WAS IN REVERSE.
2017 HIGHLANDER LIMITED. 11,800 MILES. OVER THE LAST 30 DAYS THE VEHICLE HAS HAD 3 SIMILAR EVENTS OF VEHICLE HESITATION OR STUMBLING FROM A FULL STOP, WHEN APPLYING FULL ACCELERATOR PEDAL TRAVEL. THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO ACCELERATE NORMALLY FOR A SECOND OR TWO, THEN JUST SEEMS TO HANG AT 5-10 MPH. PUMPING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL QUICKLY FULL UP, FULL DOWN MAY HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM, I'M NOT REALLY SURE, BUT THAT IS WHAT I DID.THE VEHICLE OPERATES NORMALLY AFTER THAT.IN THE LAST AND MOST FRIGHTENING EPISODE, I WAS AT A STOP,ON A SIDE STREET WAITING TO TURN ONTO A FRONTAGE ROAD WHERE TYPICAL SPEEDS ARE 60 MPH. I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FULL DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND TURNED ONTO THE FRONTAGE ROAD. THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO ACCELERATE NORMALLY FOR 1-2 SECONDS, THEN AS BEFORE, JUST STAYED AT 5-10 MPH WITH A CAR COMING UPON MY REAR AT 60 MPH. FORTUNATELY FOR ME HE WAS ABLE TO CHANGE LANES AND AVOID RUNNING INTO ME. I PUMPED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AS DESCRIBED. THE VEHICLE THAN RESPONDED NORMALLY. I DON'T REMEMBER IF THE VEHICLE WAS IN POWER OR ECONOMY MODE. I TYPICALLY PUT IT INTO POWER MODE BEFORE ENTERING THE HIGHWAY (WHICH I WAS ABOUT TO DO ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE FRONTAGE ROAD) IF I REMEMBER. AS YOU MAY IMAGINE THIS LAST EPISODE LEFT ME QUITE DISTURBED. I ALWAYS USE REGULAR GRADE GASOLINE FROM TOP NAME GAS STATIONS. THESE EVENTS HAPPENED WITH DIFFERENT TANKS OF GAS FROM DIFFERENT STATIONS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO READ ANY ERROR CODES FROM THE COMPUTER, AND WERE UNABLE TO REPEAT THE PROBLEM IN A TEST DRIVE. THEY HAVE ESCALATED THE CASE TO THE TOYOTA ENGINEERING TEAM.
ON AUGUST 10TH 2018, I WAS DRIVING MY 2017 HIGHLANDER WITH 17,000 MILES ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY IN CALIFORNIA WHEN I ACCELERATED HARD TO PASS OTHER VEHICLES. SUDDENLY THE HIGHLANDER LOST ALL POWER WITH ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES SOUNDING. THE ORANGE TRIANGULAR WARNING/CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON WITH THE ALL WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM FAILURE FLASHING NEEDING IMMEDIATE SERVICE. I WAS ABLE THE GET TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT GETTING KILLED AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. AFTER A MINUTE I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS RESET. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED. FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED THE HIGHLANDER HAD ONLY 4,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS UNDER THE SAME CIRCUMSTANCES. I WAS TRYING TO PASS. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP IN RENO NV THEY SAID ALL THE ERROR CODES WERE NOT CAPTURED AND THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF THIS ISSUE DESPITE MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET AS WELL AS THIS SITE? I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO WITHOUT AN ERROR CODE. THEY SUGGESTED THE NEXT TIME IT HAPPENS, DO NOT RESTART THE CAR AND HAVE IT TOWED THE A DEALERSHIP TO TRY AND RECAPTURE AN ERROR CODE. I FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA CORP BUT THEY LEAD ME TO THINK THAT THEY DON'T INVESTIGATE INCIDENTS LIKE THIS UNLESS THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS. I HAVE ADVISED MY FAMILY OF THIS DANGEROUS CONDITION WITH THE HIGHLANDER AND IF ANY ONE GETS HURT OR KILLED PLEASE SUE THE HECK OUT OF THEM. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SYMPTOM WITH THE HIGHLANDER THAT IS GOING TO GET SOMEBODY KILLED AND TOYOTA DOESN'T SEEM TO CARE.
CITY STREET, TWO WHILE TURNING FROM A STOP AND TWO FROM A STATIONARY STOP. LOSS OF POWER. PRESSING ON ACCELERATOR HAD NO AFFECT BUT APPROXIMATELY 5-10 SECONDS REGAINED MOVEMENT AND CONTINUED ON. UNSURE/UNKNOWN OF THE SAFETY CAUSE. SCARING ESPECIALLY TURNING LEFT WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC COMING AT YOU.
HELLO, THERE. I WANT TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE ABOUT HIGHLANDER PROBLEM. MY WIFE AND ME WENT TO MYSTIC,CT FROM MY HOME FOR PLEASURE AUGUST 8. I USED CRUISE CONTROL WITH 65 MPH ON HIGHWAY. AFTER I FINISHED TRAVELING THERE, I TRIED TO USE THE SAME CRUISE CONTROL ON THE WAY HOME. AND THEN SUDDENLY MY CAR MADE PROBLEM IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. RPM WENT UP TO OVER 3000 AND RPM NEEDLE ON DASHBOARD STARTED DANCING. AND I WATCHED 'CHECK AWD SYSTEM','TRACTION CONTROL TURNED OFF','CHECK ENGINE VISIT YOUR DEALERSHIP' COMING UP. AUTOMATICALLY MY CAR LOST POWER CONTROL. WE WERE VERY SCARED BECAUSE EVERYONE THERE WAS DRIVING A CAR WITH HIGH SPEED AT NIGHT. I TURNED ON EMERGENCY LIGHT AND PUT MY CAR ON SERVICE ROAD. FORTUNATELY, NO BODY FOLLOWED BEHIND MY CAR AT THAT TIME. IF SOMEONE KEPT APPROACHING MY CAR,WE WOULD HAVE MADE BIG TRAFFIC ACCIDENT. THIS IS SAFETY ISSUE FOR US. EVEN IF WE ARE STILL ALIVE, I DON'T HAVE ANY COURAGEOUS IDEA ABOUT MY CAR. I WILL NOT BE SATISFIED WITH MY CAR. WHENEVER I DRIVE IT, I HAVE TO THINK ABOUT MY CAR CONDITION. FOR EXAMPLE, I FOUND THE SAME STORY ABOUT MY HIGHLANDER THROUGH CARCOMPLAINTS.COM THAT CAR WAS EVENTUALLY BURNED IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGHWAY. SO I WANT MY MONEY BACK BY LEMON LAW.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY OR WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT RETRACTOR ASSEMBLY FAILED ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT TIGHTENED WITH EACH ATTEMPT TO MOVE AND PREVENTED THE DRIVER FROM MOVING. THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO KOONS TYSONS TOYOTA (8610 LEESBURG PIKE, VIENNA, VIRGINIA 22182), BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 40,000.
"TAKATA RECALL" WHILE DRIVING BACK HOME WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE 5 SOUTH FREEWAY HEADING BACK TO LOS ANGELES FROM NEWHALL CA, THE WARNING, THE ABS, THE CRUISE CONTROL AND THE TRACKING CONTROL LIGHTS LID ON MY DASHBOARD ALL AT THE SAME TIME, SCARE ME SINCE I WAS DRIVING WITH MY CHILDREN I DID NOT KNOW IF MY CAR WOULD ALL OF SUDDEN TURN OFF , BUT ONCE I GOT HOME I PARK AND RETURN BACK TO CHECK IT 30 MINUTES LATER TURN THE CAR ON AND THE LIGHTS WHERE STILL THERE I TURN THE CAR BACK OFF AND THIS MORNING THEY WHERE NO LONGER THERE I CALLED THE DEALER BUT THEY SAID THEY CANT NO LONGER DO ANYTHING BUT DO THE 5 POINT CHECK SINCE THE LIGHTS ARE NOT THERE FOR THEM TO SEE WHAT IS WRONG THE CAR OR WHY THE LIGHTS LID IN THE DASHBORAD.
IN MOTION, THERE WAS NO INDICATOR LIGHT ON BOARD, JUST BIG NOISE STARTED COMING DURING START OR SPEED OF CAR. ENGINE CYL 6 ROD BEARING WAS FAULTY , MAKING NOISE, DEALER REPAIRED IT AND NOT ABLE TO ASSURE OTHER BEARINGS DONT HAVE ANY ISSUES.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT CALLED ON BEHALF OF THE DRIVER AND STATED THAT ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE OF THE DRIVER'S VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED HEAD INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE FRONT PASSENGER SUSTAINED LEG INJURIES AND THE REAR PASSENGER ALSO SUSTAINED HEAD AND NECK INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE ALSO SUSTAINED INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A POLICE TOW LOT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OF THE AIR BAG FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND OPENED CASE NUMBER: 1806013647. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000.
WHEN DRIVING IN THE RAIN WITH THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS OPERATING, A PATTERN, FOR A LACK OF A BETTER TERM, APPEARS AS PER THE INCLUDED PHOTO TAKEN WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN AT THAT TIME. THIS PATTERN OR MARKINGS WHEN VISIBLE RUN VERTICALLY IN THE FORM OF WAVY LINES FROM ONE END OF THE WINDSHIELD TO THE OTHER. THIS CONDITION IS NOT THE RESULT OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS, A DIRTY WINDSHIELD, INSIDE OR OUT, OR ANY SUBSTANCE OF ANY KIND INTENTIONALLY APPLIED OR NOT AND IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM AND APPEARS EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN IN THE RAIN. WHEN FIRST NOTICED, THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL HOURS IN HEAVY AND LIGHT RAIN AND A PERIOD OF TIME IN DAYLIGHT AND EVENING HOURS WITH THE WIPERS BEING OPERATED AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS. THESE MARKINGS ARE A SUBSTANTIAL DISTRACTION ESPECIALLY IN THE EVENING WHERE ONCOMING HEADLIGHTS EXACERBATE THE CONDITION. THESE MARKINGS WHEN VISIBLE NEVER CHANGE OR STREAK AS THE WIPERS MOVE BACK AND FORTH AS IN THE CASE WHEN, FOR EXAMPLE, AN INSECT STRIKES THE WINDSHIELD. TO THIS END, AND JUST BY CHANCE ON THE DAY THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN, A STREAK IS VISIBLE AGAIN PROBABLY DUE TO AN INSECT HITTING THE WINDSHIELD OR SOME OTHER TYPE OF DEBRIS, HOWEVER, THE MARKINGS IN QUESTION CLEARLY STAND OUT FROM THE STREAK. IT IS NOTED IN THE CASE OF THE STREAK, AS WOULD BE EXPECTED, IT FOLLOWS THE MOVEMENT OF THE WIPER. THE MARKINGS WHEN APPLICABLE ARE VISIBLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS MOVING OR STATIONARY AND CAN BE CLEARLY SEEN BY THE DRIVER AND FRONT SEAT PASSENGER REGARDLESS OF THE TYPE OF ROADWAY. AND FOR WHATEVER REASON, THESE MARKINGS ARE NOT VISIBLE IN THE ABSENCE OF RAIN OR WATER BEING APPLIED MANUALLY FROM A GARDEN HOSE.
SINCE I LEASED BY HIGHLANDER I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE CAR SHIFTS VERY HARD, SOMETIMES SPUTTERING BETWEEN 5-10MPH AND THEN ACCELERATING. DEALER REFLASHED THE COMPUTER BASED ON TECHNICAL BULLETIN TSB-0194-17. THEY HAVE NOW HAD THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS AND HAVE REPLICATED THE ISSUE AND I AM AWAITING GUIDANCE. THE VEHICLE HAS 13,000 MILES ON IT, THERE SHOULD NOT BE MAJOR TRANSMISSION ISSUES. MY COMPLAINT DOESN'T SEEM ISOLATED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS SEATED IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THE DRIVER FELL ASLEEP BEHIND THE WHEEL. UPON WAKING UP, THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A LIGHT POLE AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE STOMACH, HEAD, AND NECK. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED FOOT, CHEST, TONGUE, AND NECK INJURIES. THE FOUR REAR PASSENGERS SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE NECK, HEAD, LIPS, FEET, AND ARMS. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS REQUIRED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TOW LOT. THE CONTACT CALLED QUEENSBORO TOYOTA AT (718) 335-8600 (LOCATED AT 62-10 NORTHERN BLVD, WOODSIDE, NY 11377), BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. BUD CLARY TOYOTA OF YAKIMA IN UNION GAP, WASHINGTON WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH CASE NUMBER: 171-221-11129. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000. *TT UPDATED 10/5/18*JB
AS I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY I HEARD A LOUD BANG THERE WERE NO VEHICLES AROUND ME AT THE TIME AND NOTHING HAD HIT MY VEHICLE, I THEN HEARD FALLING GLASS PIECES AND WIND AND REALIZED MY SUNROOF HAD BEEN SHATTERED. UPON INSPECTION IT WAS EVIDENT THAT THE SUNROOF HAD EXPLODED AS IT WAS PUSHED OUTWARD AND CRACKED FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER IN MULTIPLE AREAS.
WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE ON CRUISE CONTROL AT 75 MPH, WITHOUT WARNING, ALERTS WENT OFF AND VEHICLE SLOWED TO ABOUT 40 MPH AND WOULD NOT LET ME GO ANY FASTER. THE AWD FAILURE ALERT SIGN CAME ON AS DID SYSTEM ENGINE FAILURE ALERT CAME ON. I WAS ABLE DRIVE AT THAT SLOW SPEED FOR APPROXIMATELY 4 MILES ON INTERSTATE RAMP WITH FLASHERS ON. MY SON ADVISED ME TO TURN ENGINE OFF FOR ONE MINUTE AND RESTART, WHICH IT DID WITHOUT ALERTS. THEN ABLE TO DRIVE THE 2O MILES HOME. NEXT DAY TOOK IT DEALERSHIP WHERE IT'S BEEN GOING ON 3 RD DAY. EXTREMELY BAD POSSIBLE OUTCOME COULD HAVE OCCURRED ON THE INTERSTATE BEING REAR-ENDED OR IF HAD BEEN TRYING TO PASS SOMEONE OR VICE VERSE. CAR PRESENTLY AT DEALERSHIP SO DO NOT HAVE VIN. OR ACTUAL MULES
VEHICLE DESIGN DOES NOT INCLUDE FRONT RECOVERY HOOK(S) NOR ANY SECURE LATCH POINT TO TOW THE VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. OWNERS MANUAL DOES NOT ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE (?) SUGGESTED USING THE FLAT BED TIGHT DOWN HOOKS AT MID-VEHICLE, HOWEVER THIS APPROACH WOULD NOT BE SAFE NOR REASONABLE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE (?) IS CURRENTLY UNABLE TO SAFELY ADDRESS THIS SITUATION.
AT ABOUT 11,000 MILES, A HIGH PITCH WHINING SOUND APPEARED DURING ACCELERATION. THE DEALER IDENTIFIED A PROBLEM THAT REQUIRES A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE PARTS ARE BACK ORDERED. I WAS ADVISED TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL TOYOTA APPROVED THE REPAIR AND THE PARTS WERE AVAILABLE. RESEARCH INDICATED THAT THIS ISSUE IS COMMON AND MAY LEAD TO COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE PRESENTING A SAFETY ISSUE.
4 WEEKS AGO THERE WAS A NOTICEABLE HIGH PITCHED WHINE DURING ACCELERATION FROM 40 MPH AND UP. THE WHINE'S PITCH WOULD CHANGE UP OR DOWN WHEN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CHANGED GEARS AND THE VEHICLE'S SPEED CHANGED. ON 2/12/2018, THE TRANSMISSION LET GO (THE ENGINE WOULD REV, BUT NO POWER TO THE WHEELS) WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON A BUSY 45 MPH STREET. FORTUNATELY, THE PERSON BEHIND HERE DIDN'T REAR-END HER AND MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO PULL THE VEHICLE INTO A TURNING LANE AND STOP WITH FLASHERS ON. SHE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND ON. THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGED AND SHE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME. RIGHT BEFORE THE TRANSMISSION LET GO, SHE HEARD A GRINDING NOISE. WHEN I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE WHINE WAS GONE ON ACCELERATION, BUT NOW IT WOULD WHINE ON DECELERATION! THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO AN INTERNAL CLIP THAT BECOMES UNSEATED. THE CLIP CAN CAUSE INTERNAL DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION. THEY WERE WORKING ON ANOTHER HIGHLANDER WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. THERE IS A CONVERSATION PUBLISHED ON EDMUNDS.COM WITH OTHER PEOPLE REPORTING THE SAME ISSUE I HAD WITH MY HIGHLANDER'S 8-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. MY HIGHLANDER HAD 13.200 MILES ON IT WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP. IT TOOK 9 CALENDAR DAYS TO GET THE VEHICLE FIXED DUE TO LIMITED AVAILABILITY OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME MY REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION WAS THE ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY (USA) WHEN THEY ORDERED IT! IF THIS IS HAPPENING WITH SO MANY HIGHLANDERS WITH THIS 8-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT RESULTS FROM THE TRANSMISSION FAILING ON SOMEONE ELSE.
I HAVE A SAFETY CONCERN REGARDING MY 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. I AM TRYING TO USE THE HIGHLANDER'S ADVERTISED ABILITY TO TOW A SMALL RV TRAILER (UNDER 5000LBS). TOYOTA AGREES THIS REQUIRES INSTALLATION OF A BRAKE CONTROLLER IN THE HIGHLANDER AND ELECTRIC BRAKES ON THE RV TRAILER. I INSTALLED A BRAKE CONTROLLER FOLLOWING STANDARD INDUSTRY PRACTICES. WHEN THE MANUAL BRAKE SWITCH IS THEN APPLIED, MY TOYOTA HIGHLANDER DISPLAYS "PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" WARNING MESSAGE EVEN IF THE PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM IS TURNED-OFF. (NOTE: THIS ISSUE ONLY OCCURS IN 2017 AND 2018 HIGHLANDERS SINCE EARLIER VERSIONS DID NOT COME EQUIPPED WITH A COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM). I BELIEVE THAT THE BURDEN SHOULD BE ON TOYOTA TO PROVIDE PROPER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO RECTIFY THIS ISSUE. TOYOTA HAS NOT PROPERLY ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE DESPITE MY REPEATED LETTERS TO TOYOTA. I AM PARTICULARLY CONCERNED THAT BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF GUIDANCE PROVIDED BY TOYOTA ON THIS ISSUE, SOME FOLKS (AS NOTED ON INTERNET HTTP://WWW.TOYOTANATION.COM/FORUM/333-HIGHLANDER-3RD-GENERATION-2014/1509914-7-PIN-WIRING-HARNESS-2017-HIGHLANDER-LIMITED.HTML) ARE INSERTING A DIODE TO PREVENT THEIR BRAKE CONTROLLER FROM DRIVING POWER BACK ONTO THE BRAKE SENSE LINE IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE "PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" WARNING MESSAGE. THIS ALSO PREVENTS THE BRAKE LIGHTS ON BOTH THE TOW VEHICLE AND TRAILER FROM BEING LIT WHEN THE TRAILER BRAKES ARE MANUALLY APPLIED. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE UNSAFE. THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE TRAILER BRAKES INDEPENDENTLY OF THE TOW VEHICLE BRAKES (I.E. THE MANUAL OVERRIDE CAPABILITY) IS A SAFETY FEATURE FOR REDUCING TRAILER SWAY WHICH CAN OCCUR IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. FURTHERMORE, IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE MANUAL OVERRIDE CAPABILITY IS REQUIRED BY LAW IN CALIFORNIA. TOYOTA NEEDS TO PROVIDE GUIDANCE SINCE ONLY THEY HAVE THE DETAILED KNOWLEDGE NEEDED TO DEVELOP A SOLUTION.
AS I WAS TURNING LEFT AT A GREEN ARROW ACROSS A DIVIDED HIGHWAY, THE CAR STOPPED MOVING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OR ALARMS IN ADVANCE OF THE STOP, NOR WERE THERE ANY CRUNCHING OR GRINDING SOUNDS AT THE TIME THE CAR STOPPED. I COULD TELL WHEN I STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR AT THE TIME THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN THAT SOMETHING WASN'T RIGHT. AFTER THE CAR STOPPED, I TRIED TO RE-START 2X IN THE INTERSECTION, THEN PUSHED THE CAR OUT OF THE INTERSECTION. THE LIGHTS AND ELECTRICAL CAME ON, BUT WHEN I PUT IT IN GEAR AND HIT THE ACCELERATOR, THE ENGINE REVVED AND THE RPMS WENT UP, BUT THE TIRES DID NOT ENGAGE. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WITH CALLS TO TOYOTA ENGINEERING TOOK 2 DAYS TO DIAGNOSE IT AS A TRANSMISSION " PRODUCTION ERROR" THAT REQUIRED A "COUNTERMANDED" REPLACEMENT. THEY HAVE HAD THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE FOR OVER 30 DAYS. I WAS CONTACTED LAST FRIDAY THE 12TH TO BE TOLD THAT THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS IN, BUT HAVE NOT BEEN CONTACTED TO PICK UP.
THIS VEHICLE HAS A DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP THAT TOYOTA REFUSES TO REPLACE. I WAS IN CHICAGO ON 12/26-31/2017 AND THE TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW 20 DEGREES. THE WINDSHIELD WASHER FROZE AND I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO GROSSINGER TOYOTA, LINCOLNWOOD, IL ON 12/27 AND 12/29. THEY DID NOTHING ON 12/27 OTHER THAN PARK THE VEHICLE INSIDE WHERE THE PUMP THAWED AND WORKED. THE NEXT TWO DAYS IT FROZE AGAIN. ON 12/29 I DROVE TO WI AND PLACED MY FAMILY IN AN UNSAFE SITUATION WITH SALT ON THE WINDSHIELD AND NO WORKING WASHER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO GROSSINGER AND THEY CHANGED FLUID TO A COLDER TEMPERATURE AND USED AIR TO BLOW OUT THE LINES. THE NEXT MORNING IT WAS AGAIN BELOW 10 DEGREES WHEN I LEFT CHICAGO. THE WASHER AGAIN DID NOT WORK AND IT PLACED MY FAMILY IN AN UNSAFE SITUATION WITH SALT AND DIRT ON THE WINDSHIELD. IN HANNIBAL, MO I SAT IN A FAST FOOD DRIVE THRU FOR 15 MINUTES AND THE WASHER STARTED WORKING. SOON AS I WAS BACK ON THE ROAD IT AGAIN FROZE UP. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO TEXAS TOYOTA, GRAPEVINE, TX ON 1/4/2018 AND THEY REFUSED TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE UNLESS THE PROBLEM COULD BE DUPLICATED. I REFUSED TO DRIVE BACK TO CHICAGO TO DUPLICATE THE FROZEN WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP. IT IS OBVIOUS THE CULTURE OF NOT CARING ABOUT SAFETY HAZARDS ON THEIR VEHICLES CONTINUES AT TOYOTA. I BELIEVE THE DIAPHRAGM INSIDE THE WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP IS DEFECTIVE AND FREEZES WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 20 DEGREES. TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE A DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP.
THE DRIVER'S SEATBELT IS NOT ERGONOMICALLY PLACED, AND REACHING UP, BACK AND PULLING FORWARD WITH MY LEFT ARM TO ATTACH THE SEATBELT HAS DAMAGED MY LEFT SHOULDER (SEVERE TENDINITIS AND A PARTIALLY TORN ROTATOR CUFF). TO DATE PHYSICAL THERAPY HAS NOT RESOLVED THE ISSUE AND I MUST RETURN TO THE ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON FOR FURTHER EVALUATION.
WHILE DRIVING UP THE I-5 GRAPEVINE AT 72 MPH THE CAR SUDDENLY SLOWED WITHOUT ANY WARNING TO UNDER 20 MPH. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON AND THE DASH SAID AWD SYSTEM DISENGAGED OR ERROR OR SOME SIMILAR MESSAGE AND TO TAKE TO THE DEALER. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO ACCELERATE TO GET OFF THE ROAD. I PULLED OFF, TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON, AND IT STARTED RUNNING AGAIN. I'M LUCKY I WAS NOT REAR ENDED.
WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH ON AN INTERSTATE, MY SUNROOF JUST EXPLODED FOR NO REASON.
THE BULKY SIDE MIRROR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE CREATES A SAFETY HAZARD WHEN MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN BECAUSE OF A LARGE BLIND SPOT. I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THAT VERY REASON. I WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. I CHECKED FOR ONCOMING TRAFFIC SEVERAL TIMES AND TURNED WHEN I SAW TRAFFIC WAS CLEAR. I WAS HIT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE BECAUSE MY VISIBILITY WAS BLOCKED BY THE MIRROR AND THE ONCOMING VEHICLE WAS NOT SEEN.
DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 72 MPH WHEN VEHICLE DIED CAUSING A POTENTIALLY VERY HAZARDOUS SITUATION - CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, MASTER WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, SEE DEALER FOR REPAIR MESSAGE DISPLAYED. WAS ABLE TO LIMP TO SIDE OF ROAD AND HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. AFTER 2 DAYS OF DIAGNOSTIC TESTING THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY (LESS THAN 12,000 MILES ON VEHICLE). THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING, HOWEVER, NOW NOTICE A DECREASE IN GAS MILEAGE AND DIFFERENCE IN TRANSMISSION SHIFTING SINCE REPLACEMENT.
I PURCHASED MY TOYOTA IN MARCH. LAST NITE WAS OUR FIRST STORM OF THE YEAR. I LIVE IN SALEM,NH AND WE HAD MAYBE 2-3 INCHES OF SNOW. I WAS DRIVING HOME AND WENT OFF THE ROAD TWICE. I TRIED PUMPING BRAKES AND I FEEL AS THOUGH I HAD NO CONTROL OVER THIS SUV I COULD NOT STOP. IT WAS NOT DEEP SNOW. I FEEL SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG WITH THIS CAR. I WAS NOT GOING MORE THAN 25 MPH AND MY SUV WENT OFF ROAD AND I NARROWLY MISSED A TELEPHONE POLE. I HAVE NEVER HAD AN SUV THAT DROVE THIS BADLY. SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT, MY HUSBAND EVEN DROVE AFTER I WENT OFF ROAD AND WHILE HE WAS DRIVING THE CAR SLID ALL OVER ROAD TOO. DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS IN THIS TYPE OF WEATHER. I BOUGHT THIS CAR FOR SAFETY FEATURES AND NOW I AM IN FEAR OF MY LIFE IN SNOW. HELP ME PLEASE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE ENGINE REVVED AND ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ISLAND TOYOYA (1591 HYLAN BLVD, STATEN ISLAND, NY), BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 17,100.
WINDSHIELD REPLACED AFTER A CRACK. WINDSHIELD COMPANY AND TOYOTA DEALER COULD NOT RECALIBRATE FRONT CAMERA. LANE WARNING SYSTEM AND FRONTAL COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEMS NOT WORKING. DRIVING WITH WARNING LIGHTS ON DASH. WINDSHIELD MOUNTED CAMERA SAFETY SYSTEMS IS A BAD IDEA. THE NEED FOR WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT MAY OCCUR TO ANYONE. IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS COMPLICATED TO RECALIBRATE THE CAMERA. SO NOW I HAVE AN EXPENSIVE VEHICLE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE KEEP ME SAFE- EXCEPT THAT THE SAFETY SYSTEMS ARE NOT WORKING.
VEHICLE HAD A STRAIGHT FRONTAL COLLISION WITH THE END OF A GUARDRAIL ON A HIGHWAY BETWEEN 30-40 MPH. VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A COLLISION AVOIDANCE RADAR SYSTEM BUT THE SYSTEM DID NOT ENGAGE. THE SYSTEM DID NOT AUTOMATICALLY BRAKE AS IT SHOULD HAVE.
WE WERE IN A THANKSGIVING DAY RELATED TOUCH N GO TRAFFIC ON A NORMAL STREET, WHICH ENTERS INTO A MALL. ALL OF US ARE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT, CAR AHEAD OF US JUST STARTED MOVING AND WE FOLLOWED AFTER ALLOWING A SAFE DISTANCE, THEN SUDDENLY THE CAR AHEAD OF US STOPPED, SO I TRIED STOPPING QUICKLY, BUT THE CAR'S AUTOMATIC COLLISION AVOIDANCE KICKED IN AND TOOK CONTROL OF MY BRAKES, BUT IT STILL DIDNT STOP, I WAS TRYING TO STOP, BUT THE BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING. ENDED UP REAR-ENDING CAR INFRONT OF ME. THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS SAFETY FEATURE WAS TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM REAR ENDING OTHER CARS IN DAY-TO-DAY TRAFFIC SITUATIONS. ALSO OUR SPEED WAS NOT MORE THAN 20 MPH, WHEN I HIT THE GAS PEDAL, ALMOST INSTANTLY I REALIZED I HAVE TO STOP AND TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE PEDAL, TRIED BRAKING, BUT CAR KEPT ROLLING FORWARD. THIS IS JUST 4 MONTH OLD CAR WITH 2500 MILES ON IT. WAITING TO SEE HOW TOYOTA HANDLES MY CASE, IN THE MEANTIME, INSURANCE THINKS I AM AT FAULT AND STARTED THE CLAIM, COVERING THE CAR INFRONT OF ME. MY DASHBOARD DISPLAYED A "BRAKE" MESSAGE IN RED COLOR, WHICH IS TRUE, IT IDENTIFIED A COLLISION, BUT DIDNT STOP. IMO STOPPING IS MORE IMPORTANT! THERE WAS SOME DAMAGE TO CAR INFRONT OF ME, MY CAR HAD SOME MINOR DAMAGE TO GRILLS AND FRONT BUMPER AREA.
I WAS TRAVELING EAST AT 65 MILES PER HOUR ON INTERSTATE I64 IN ILLINOIS WHEN A VERY LOUD BOMB, LIKE A SHOT GUN SOUND OCCURRED IN MY CAR. WE WERE THEN COVERED WITH THE SHATTERED GLASS FROM THE SUNROOF SHATTERING AND GLASS WAS BLOWN INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND OUT. WE WERE NOT HIT WITH ANY OBJECT, IT EXPLODED FROM THE INSIDE OUT. THE GLASS WAS ACTUALLY PUSHED UP TO THE SKY. THE EXPLOSION LEFT A 14 INCH HOLE IN MY SUNROOF.
THE NEW HEADRESTS ARE TOO FAR FORWARD AND CREATE A LITERAL PAIN IN THE NECK. THE NEW HEADREST REQUIREMENTS ARE CAUSING THE MANUFACTURERS TO PRODUCE VEHICLES THAT THE END USERS ARE HAVING TO MODIFY, OR SET THE SEATS AT AN ANGLE THAT INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF INJURY IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS IS TRUE OF MOST NEW VEHICLES. PLEASE REVISE THE NEW REGULATIONS.

VEHICLE SUSTAINED A CRACK FROM TWO SMALL STONES HITTING THE WINDSHIELD WHILE TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH. CRACK SPREAD SIGNIFICANTLY FROM THE INITIAL IMPACT SITE. WEATHER DID NOT HAVE A FACTOR IN THIS AS IT WAS SUMMER. CRACK CONTINUED TO SPREAD EVEN AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A GARAGE. CRACK SPREAD WITH VERY LITTLE PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE WINDSHIELD. BELIEVE THAT THE WINDSHIELD WAS NOT MANUFACTURED TO SUSTAIN A LIGHT IMPACT.
THE HEADLIGHT PROJECTION IS SHARPLY CUT OFF AT THE TOP. WHEN ENTERING A DIP IN THE ROAD THERE IS NO ILLUMINATION AT THE FAR SIDE UPHILL. THE DEALER ADJUSTED THEM, NOW THERE IS A LACK OF ACCEPTABLE LIGHT IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT ON FLAT ROADS
I AM EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF GLARE FROM THE WINDSHIELD. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN MAY OF 2017. I INITIALLY HAD TINT APPLIED TO THE WINDSHIELD FOR MEDICAL REASONS AND THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS CAUSING AN INTERACTION WITH THE GLASS ITSELF. AFTER HAVING THE TINT REMOVED, I AM STILL EXPERIENCING THIS EXCESSIVE GLARE.

BOUGHT THIS 2017 HIGHLANDER BRAND-NEW FROM THE DEALER. IT HAD 67 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. WITHIN A FEW THOUSAND MILES, A STONE CHIPPED THE WINDSHIELD AND WITHIN DAYS THE WINDSHIELD WAS A SPIDER'S NEST OF SPREADING CRACKS ALL ACROSS UP AND DOWN THE WINDSHIELD. I BOUGHT A NEW 2015 HIGHLANDER FROM THE SAME DEALER AND HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AFTER JUST A FEW THOUSAND MILES. I BELIEVE TOYOTA SLANTED THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE DOWN FOR BETTER AIRFLOW AND RESULTING MPG INCREASE AND IN SO DOING, ALL ROAD DEBRIS SUCH AS STONES, ARE PROPELLED UP RIGHT ONTO THE WINDSHIELD AND THE STONES SMASH THE WINDSHIELD. WHAT ARE THE RANDOM ODDS THAT A BRAND-NEW, DEALER-BOUGHT 2015 AND 2017 HIGHLANDER WOULD BOTH GET A STONE CHIP THAT DESTROYS THE WINDSHIELD WITHIN THE FIRST FEW THOUSAND MILES OF DRIVING? THESE WINDSHIELD AREN'T CHEAP TO REPLACE- ABOUT $1400.
THE DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY AND CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS. WHEN DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WITH THE FEATURE ON AND A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF YOU EXITS TO THE RIGHT, THE HIGHLANDER WILL SLOW AND BRAKE AGGRESSIVELY AS IF IT'S STILL FOLLOWING THE SLOWING EXITING VEHICLE THAT IS NOW IN ANOTHER LANE AND LEAVING THE HIGHWAY. THE SETTING OF THE VEHICLE TO VEHICLE DISTANCE AND PRE-COLLISION SETTING HAVE LITTLE AFFECT ON THIS PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM CAN EASILY BE DUPLICATED EVERY TIME. THE DEALER SAYS IT'S NORMAL OPERATION. I WAS NEARLY REAR ENDED BY A LARGE TRUCK WHEN MY HIGHLANDER UNEXPECTEDLY AND AGGRESSIVELY BRAKED AND SLOWED FOR NO REASON AS IT CONTINUED TRACKING THE EXITING VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED, WHICH IS WHY I NO LONGER USE DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER WITH TOYOTA BEFORE SOME IS SERIOUSLY INJURED. THANK YOU.
MANY ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, FUSES REPEATEDLY BLOWING OUT, POWER LIFT GATE NOT CLOSING, MANY DIFFERENT ERROR MESSAGE APPEARING ON THE SCREEN FOR NO REASON, VEHICLE WENT INTO ACCESSORY MODE WHILE DRIVING RESULTING IN A LOSS OF POWER. *TR
THE VEHICLE IS DESIGNED TO CONTINUE TO CHARGE THE BATTERIES EVEN AFTER THE KEY IS NO LONGER IN THE PROXIMITY OF THE VEHICLE. THIS COULD RESULT IN A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED IN A GARAGE - GENERATING CO AND ALSO POTENTIALLY OVERHEATING. PROPOSE THE VEHICLE CONTROL LOGIC WILL SHUTDOWN THE VEHICLE AFTER A DESIGNATED PERIOD FOLLOWING THE KEY NOT BEING IN PROXIMITY. (IT MAKES LITTLE SENSE FOR THE VEHICLE TO CONTINUE TO OPERATE IF IT HAS BEEN STATIONARY FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME WITHOUT THE KEY IN PROXIMITY). SUITABLE LOGIC COULD BE INSTALLED FOR THE DRIVER TO OVERRIDE IF REQUIRED (IN THE CASE OF A BREAKDOWN, STRANDED IN INCLEMENT WEATHER ETC.).
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT DRIVE FORWARD AND ROLLED BACKWARDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR AXLE SHAFT SUPPORT BEARING RETAINING RING FAILED AND CAUSED THE AXLE TO SEPARATE FROM THE TRANS AXLE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 192.
GASOLINE BEGAN GUSHING FROM FRONT OF VEHICLE AS I WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. I STOPPED AND CALLED TOYOTA ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. THEY CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO NEAREST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE AND THE CASE NUMBER INVOLVING THIS INCIDENT IS #1702060159
2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER SE AWD ("VEHICLE"). ON JANUARY 26, 2017 AT APPROXIMATELY 11:15 P.M., PACIFIC TIME, I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTATE 10 FREEWAY NEAR THE LA BREA AVENUE EXIT. IT WAS DARK BUT CLEAR WITH LIGHT TO MEDIUM TRAFFIC. WHILE I WAS DRIVING AROUND 80 MPH AND MERGING TOWARD AN INNER LANE, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY - ON ITS OWN - SLOWED TO AROUND 30 OR 40 MPH. CONCOMITANTLY, THE VEHICLE'S MESSAGING SYSTEM (BETWEEN THE TACHOMETER AND SPEEDOMETER) BEGAN BLINKING AND ALERTING ME THAT THE ALL WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM WAS EXPERIENCING FAILURE AND THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED IMMEDIATE SERVICING. A SMALL ORANGE TRIANGULAR INDICATOR WITH AN EMBEDDED EXCLAMATION POINT FLASHED AS WELL. I ENGAGED THE HAZARD LIGHTS AND THEN MANIPULATED THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER INTO VARIOUS POSITIONS WHILE FULLY DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 30 OR 40 MPH. FACED WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING REAR ENDED, I DISENGAGED THE HAZARD LIGHTS, SIGNALED TO THE RIGHT, AND EVENTUALLY MADE IT OFF THE FREEWAY. THE FOLLOWING DAY, JANUARY 27, 2017, I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE I BELIEVE IT IS STILL BEING DIAGNOSED . THE LONGER THE DIAGNOSIS TAKES, THE MORE I AM CONCERNED THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT DETERMINED THE REMEDY FOR THIS ISSUE. GIVEN TOYOTA'S HISTORY, I AM ALSO CONCERNED THEY MAY RETURN THE VEHICLE TO ME WITHOUT DETERMINING CONCLUSIVELY HOW THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AND WITHOUT FIXING THE ISSUE SO THAT IT WILL NOT POSE A THREAT TO MY PASSENGERS, INCLUDING MY OWN FAMILY, AND THE PUBLIC. ACCORDINGLY, IT IS MY DUTY TO REPORT THIS TO THE NHTSA AND TO SEEK THE NHTSA'S GUIDANCE ABOUT STEPS I CAN TAKE TO ENSURE THAT TOYOTA DOES NOT HAND ME BACK THE VEHICLE, WHICH MAY BE A DEATHTRAP. I DON'T USE SUCH INFLAMMATORY WORDS LIGHTLY, BUT THE MORE I CONTEMPLATE, THE MORE I FEEL THAT THIS WAS A POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING EVENT.
