Summary

For the second time (first in 2019) I was seconds and maybe two feet from stopping the car to park when, with my foot on the brake, the car suddenly and without warning lunged forward at what seemed like full throttle. The first "crash" was in my driveway. The force was shocking and took off the front of the car. I insisted Toyota investigate and they ultimately denied any liability. After the car was allegedly repaired, I started noticing another phenomenon: every time I would slow down to brake--approaching an intersection or stop sign, etc.--the car would briefly lunge forward before the brakes engaged to stop the car. I reported this to the dealer 2-3 times and each time I was assured that this was "normal" for a hybrid transitioning from gas to electric at a lower speed. Two weeks ago, with a friend in the car, I was pulling into a parking space, foot on the brake and about to stop, when the same thing occurred: without warning, the car lunged forward, at what seemed like full throttle, and crashed into a low concrete wall. Had it been seconds later, we would have had our seatbelts off and gone into the windshield. There were injuries. FYI, I have a pretty much perfect driving record and log thousands of miles each year. I had ZERO problems with the Prius I owned prior to this one. I will never drive this car again.

THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING AND STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT. WHEN ACCELERATING TO PROCEED FROM THE STOP LIGHT THE VEHICLE WOULD BARELY ACCELERATE NO MATTER HOW FAR WE PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL DOWN. THE ENGINE WAS NOT REVVING FASTER IT JUST APPEARED TO STAY IN EV MODE WITH VERY LITTLE ACCELERATION. FINALLY AFTER ABOUT 5-10 SECONDS THE CAR STARTS ACCELERATING. WE ARE VERY CONCERNED THAT IF THIS OCCURS AT A TURN ONTO A BUSY ROAD WE COULD BE IN A POSITION WHERE WE ARE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF ONCOMING CROSS TRAFFIC. THIS IS VERY INTERMITTENT, MAYBE ONCE OR TWICE PER SUMMER (USUALLY IN THE HOTTER TIMES OF THE YEAR). WE'VE HAD THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP AND BOTH TIMES THEY HAVE SAID THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM. SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET THIS SOUNDS LIKE TSB-0241-17, WHICH I HAVE SHARED WITH THE DEALER BUT BOTH TIMES THEY HAVE INDICATED THEY SEE NO SIGN OFF A PROBLEM.

EVEN THOUGH THIS VEHICLE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS CASE, I CONSIDER THAT IT IS VERY RELEVANT THAT I EXPRESS MY CONCERNS WITH THIS VEHICLE DUE TO THE FACT THAT I TRADED IN MY 2015 TOYOTA PRIUS FOR A VEHICLE THAT PROVIDED AN UNSAFE DRIVING EXPERIENCE TO MY FAMILY WHICH WAS THE 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS WITH VIN NUMBER [XXX] AFTER TAKING IT TO THREE DIFFERENT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS TO BE EVALUATED BY TWO DIFFERENT TOYOTA FIELD INSPECTORS FROM TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS, TOYOTA MOTOR VEHICLES MADE THE CHOICE NOT TO LISTEN TO OUR CONCERNS AND REJECTED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY PROVIDING ME A SAFETY HAZARD PRODUCT IN ORDER TO AVOID LEMON LAW AND/OR MAKE ME AWARE OF THE HIGH LEVELS OF EMF THAT THE VEHICLE HAD. ON APRIL 18 2019, WE NEVER WERE TOLD BY THE SECOND FIELD INSPECTOR SENT BY TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS THE RESULTS OF HIS FINDINGS. BIG TWO TOYOTA TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE SITUATION AND CONVINCED US TO TRADE IN THIS VEHICLE FOR A NEW 2019 TOYOTA SIENNA. Summary

I HAD AN SUA (SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION). I DROVE UP AN INCLINE INTO THE "DRIVEWAY" OF THE HOLIDAY IN IN DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO, PULLED UP INTO A SMALL CIRCULAR AREA/DRIVEWAY WHERE YOU CAN REGISTER FOR YOUR ROOM OR PICK UP OR DROP OFF PEOPLE. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, I WAS STOPPING THE CAR TO PICK UP MY DAUGHTER AND HER BOYFRIEND. AND THE CAR TOOK OFF ON IT'S OWN. I TRIED DESPERATELY TO USE THE BRAKES, BUT THEY WOULDN'T WORK, SO I KEPT DRIVING AROUND THE CIRCULAR DRIVEWAY TO KEEP CONTROL OF THE CAR WHILE I KEPT TRYING TO STOP THE CAR TO NO AVAIL. THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING AND SCREECHING AROUND THE DRIVEWAY AND THEN I FINALLY LOST CONTROL AND THE CAR HIT A WALL TO MY RIGHT, THEN MOVED A BIT FORWARD AND BUMPED INTO A CURB ON THE LEFT AND FINALLY STOPPED.MY OTHER DAUGHTER WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT.WE WERE BOTH TERRIFIED! I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND FROM THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT (10/28/19) TO THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO TALK WITH A PERSON IN THEIR CLAIMS DEPT OR RATHER RECEIVE AN EMAIL RESPONSE, IT WAS 64 DAYS LATER (10/31/19). AND THAT IS ONLY BECAUSE I CALLED THEM. I TALKED TO SEVERAL CASE MANAGERS ON DIFFERENT DAYS WHO SEEMED UNHELPFUL UNTIL FINALLY ONE OF THEM GOT IN TOUCH WITH THE CLAIMS DEPARTMENT AND TOLD ME THEY WOULD CALL ME. TOYOTA WILL NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS AND I AM REALLY UPSET THAT NOW I WILL HAVE AN ACCIDENT ON MY RECORD AND MY INSURANCE WILL INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY FOR SOMETHING THAT ISN'T EVEN MY FAULT! I AM AN EXCELLENT DRIVER AND HAVE NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT THAT WAS MY FAULT. I WAS ALERT AND COHERENT AS WAS OBVIOUS TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE I SPOKE TO DIRECTLY AFTER THE ACCIDENT. MY DAUGHTER, IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, WITNESSED ALL OF MY ATTEMPTS TO USE THE BRAKES TO STOP THE CAR.

Summary

SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE IN OCTOBER, 2017, I HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT OCCURRENCES WHERE THE BRAKES FEEL LIKE THEY SLIP WHEN COMING TO A STOP. IT HAS HAPPENED IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS, (BUT MOSTLY WHEN WET), AND AT ALL SPEEDS. I CAN GO WEEKS WITHOUT AN OCCURRENCE, AND THEN IT CAN HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES IN A WEEK. IT SEEMS TO BE COMPLETELY RANDOM. I HAVE BEEN TO TWO DEALERSHIPS, AND FINALLY WAS ABLE TO DRIVE WITH A TECH WHO FELT THE "SLIPPAGE". THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR A FEW DAYS AND TOLD ME THEY TALKED TO CORPORATE AND THAT A BUMP IN THE ROAD TRIGGERS AN ABS SENSOR TO FIRE, CAUSING THE ABS TO KICK IN. THEY ALSO TOLD ME TIRE PRESSURE MIGHT AFFECT IT. NONE OF THIS SITS RIGHT WITH ME BECAUSE IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. I HAVE EXPERIENCED DRIVING A CAR WHEN ABS KICKS IN, AND THIS IS NOT THE SENSATION I AM GETTING IN THE PRIUS. "SLIPPING" IS THE BEST ADJECTIVE I HAVE TO EXPLAIN WHAT IT FEELS LIKE, AND WHEN IT HAPPENS IT IS TERRIFYING. THE LAST TIME I TOOK THE CAR IN TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE BRAKES AGAIN, I WAS TOLD THAT SINCE CORPORATE HAD BEEN CONTACTED PREVIOUSLY, THEY WOULD HAVE TO GO BACK TO THEM. THEY DIDN'T KEEP THE CAR, AND TOLD ME THEY WOULD CALL ME BACK WHEN THE CORPORATE REP WOULD BE THERE SO HE COULD DRIVE WITH ME. THAT WAS A FEW WEEKS AGO, AND THEY HAVEN'T CALLED BACK, OR RETURNED MY CALL. AT THIS POINT, I FEEL LIKE TOYOTA IS HIDING SOMETHING FROM ME AND I HAVE LOST ALL TRUST IN THE BRAND. I FEEL LIKE I AM DRIVING AN UNSAFE CAR AND TOYOTA IS IGNORING EVERYTHING I AM SAYING TO THEM.

THE INVOLVED VEHICLES WERE DESIGNED TO ENTER A FAILSAFE DRIVING MODE IN RESPONSE TO CERTAIN HYBRID SYSTEM FAULTS. TOYOTA HAS FOUND THAT IN RARE SITUATIONS, THE VEHICLE MAY NOT ENTER A FAILSAFE DRIVING MODE AS INTENDED. IF THIS OCCURS, THE VEHICLE COULD LOSE POWER AND STALL. WHILE POWER STEERING AND BRAKING WOULD REMAIN OPERATIONAL, A VEHICLE STALL WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHER SPEEDS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Summary

THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL IN THIS VEHICLE HAS SEVERAL OPERATIONAL ISSUES (PROGRAMMING BUGS OR DEFECTS) WHICH ARE POTENTIALLY EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS. PERHAPS THE MOST POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS BEHAVIOR OF THE SYSTEM IS AS FOLLOWS: - WHEN USING ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL, THE SYSTEM AUTOMATICALLY ACCELERATES AND APPLIES BRAKING FORCE TO STAY A SET DISTANCE (ONE OF THREE DISTANCES) FROM THE NEAREST PRECEDING VEHICLE. - WHEN THE NEAREST PRECEDING VEHICLE CHANGES LANES, THE SYSTEM CAN BECOME CONFUSED, DISPLAY "NO PRECEDING VEHICLE" AND DISENGAGE. - THIS BEHAVIOR CAN BE DANGEROUS OR LIFE-THREATENING IN SOME CASES, WHICH I'VE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL TIMES: WHAT HAPPENED: - HIGHWAY DRIVING AT 65MPH, USING ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL AND FOLLOWING ANOTHER VEHICLE. - WE APPROACH AN AREA OF CONGESTION OR STOPPED VEHICLES (A TRAFFIC JAM). - THE PRECEDING VEHICLE BEGINS QUICK DECELERATION IN ORDER TO AVOID REAR-ENDING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF IT. - MY ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL ALSO APPLIES STRONG BRAKING TO MAINTAIN ITS PROGRAMMED DISTANCE - THE PRECEDING VEHICLE CHANGES LANES OUT OF MY LANE - MY ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL DISPLAYS "NO PRECEDING VEHICLE" AND DISENGAGES, WHICH MEANS THAT IT STOPS BRAKING - MY CAR IS NOW FLYING INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME, GIVING ME ONLY A MOMENT TO REACT AND APPLY BRAKING. INSTEAD OF DISENGAGING DURING BRAKING, THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL SHOULD CONTINUE BRAKING DOWN TO A SPEED OF 25MPH, WHICH IS THE MAXIMUM SPEED THAT TOYOTA'S SAFETY STOP OPERATES AT TO BRING A CAR TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE CURRENT BEHAVIOR OF THE SYSTEM HAS LED TO SEVERAL NEAR ACCIDENTS IN MY HIGHWAY DRIVING, AND IS UNDOUBTEDLY A DANGER TO ANYONE ELSE WHO USES A TOYOTA ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL OF THIS MODEL ON THE HIGHWAY. I REPORTED THIS ISSUE TO TOYOTA LAST YEAR AND THEY SEEM UNINTERESTED IN FIXING IT, REFUSING EVEN TO CONVEY MY REPORT TO THEIR DEVELOPERS IN JAPAN.

SUMMARY: HAVE OWNED MY PRIUS PRIME FOR EIGHT MONTHS AND HAVE NEEDED TO REPAIR ONE WINDSHIELD CHIP, REPLACE MY WINDSHIELD ONCE, AND CURRENTLY HAVE ANOTHER CRACK THAT CANNOT BE REPAIRED. DETAILS: PURCHASED MY PRIUS PRIME DEC 10, 2017. ON DEC 20, 2017, GOT A CHIP IN MY WINDSHIELD WHILE DRIVING TO WORK ALONG THE LOCAL HIGHWAY AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT REPAIRED SAME-DAY. IN JUNE 2018, GOT ANOTHER CHIP IN MY WINDSHIELD AND THE CRACK SPREAD BEYOND REPAIR ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. STARTED THE PROCESS TO HAVE IT REPLACED AND IT TOOK APPROXIMATELY SIX WEEKS AND THREE APPOINTMENTS WITH SAFELITE BEFORE THEY HAD THE CORRECT WINDSHIELD WITH THE CORRECT PARTS. ACCORDING TO SAFELITE, TOYOTA HAD CHANGED THE DESIGN OF THE WINDSHIELD AND THE NEW DESIGN WAS ON BACKORDER. PAID MY $500 DEDUCTIBLE FOR THIS REPLACEMENT. ON AUGUST 8, 2018, JUST A FEW WEEKS AFTER REPLACING THE WINDSHIELD, I GOT ANOTHER CHIP THAT ALSO SPREAD BEYOND REPAIR IMMEDIATELY. AS OF THIS WRITING, I HAVE NOT YET REPLACED THE WINDSHIELD FOR THE SECOND TIME. AFTER DOING RESEARCH, I FOUND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT, FILED IN MARCH 2018, RELATED TO THESE DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELDS. ATTACHED ARE RECEIPTS FROM SAFELITE SHOWING THE CHIP REPAIR, PAYMENT OF MY DEDUCTIBLE, AND PICTURES OF THE CURRENT CRACK.

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH ON A SURFACE STREET, I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND A CRACK APPEARED AT THE RIGHT EDGE OF THE WINDSHIELD, ADVANCING LEFTWARD UP AND THEN ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD AND INTO MY LINE OF SIGHT IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT. I DID NOT SEE ANYTHING HIT THE WINDSHIELD AND HAVE NEVER HEARD A SOUND LIKE THAT IN NEARLY 50 YEARS OF DRIVING. AFTER RESEARCHING REPLACEMENT WINDSHIELDS, I DISCOVERED THAT THEY ARE BACK ORDERED BECAUSE SO MANY PRIUS OWNERS ARE HAVING TO REPLACE WINDSHIELDS. IN FACT, A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT RELATED TO THESE DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELDS WAS FILED THIS MARCH. (SEE HTTPS://WWW.COURTHOUSENEWS.COM/WP-CONTENT/UPLOADS/2018/03/TOYOTA.CA_.PDF ) I AM NOW DRIVING WITH WHAT I FEAR IS A SAFETY HAZARD TO ME AND ANY PASSENGERS.

WINDSHIELD CRACKS FROM IMPACT WITH SMALL ROCKS. IN THE PAST WEEK, MY WINDSHIELD WAS IMPACTED TWICE BY SMALL ROCKS. BOTH TIMES THE WINDSHIELD WAS DAMAGED. BOTH TIMES I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES PER HOUR ON A HIGHWAY. THE WINDHIELD IS THE PROBLEM. I REALIZE A ROCK MIGHT DAMAGE A WINDSHIELD BUT THE GLASS IN MY PRIUS IS MUCH MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE THAN IS ACCEPTABLE. LUCKILY I GOT BOTH CRACKS REPAIRED BEFORE THE DAMAGE COULD SPREAD AND CAUSE SAFETY ISSUES. (I BOUGHT MY PRIUS THREE MONTHS AGO; IT HAS 5,000 MILES.)

IN EARLY OR MID MAY 2018, WHEN MY NEW 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS PRIME HAD LESS THAN OR APPROX. 10,000 MILES ON IT AND WHEN I WAS GETTING INTO MY CAR ONE SUNNY MORNING IN MY GATED PARKING LOT, I FIRST NOTICED A VERY THIN VERTICAL CRACK (CIRCA 2-3 INCHES) ON MY WINDSHIELD - STARTING AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD BELOW MY WIPERS. THE CRACK WAS LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GLASS, I.E. BETWEEN DRIVER & PASSENGER. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY, AND HAD SAT IN MY PARKING SPOT FOR THE LAST DAY OR TWO, AND THEN ON THIS MAY MORNING, THERE WAS A CRACK. NO CHIP MARK HAD EXISTED PRIOR TO THIS, AND NO ROCK HAD HIT IT WHEN I DROVE IT LAST. THERE WAS NO LARGE TREE NEAR MY PARKING SPOT, PLUS NOTHING WAS ON THE WINDSHIELD WHEN I GOT TO MY CAR THAT MORNING, SO NOTHING FELL ON IT. IN LESS THAN A WEEK, THE DAMAGE ON THE GLASS GREW LARGER (6 INCHES) AND WAS SPREADING. I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR 10,000 MILE SERVICE PER TOYOTACARE, BUT TOYOTA DENIED WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF ITS FRAGILE PRIUS PRIME'S WINDSHIELD, DESPITE IT BEING WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND THE DEFECT MANIFESTING ITSELF WHEN THE CAR WAS STATIONARY. WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS, THE CRACK GREW AND SPREAD LARGER, EVENTUALLY TURNING 90 DEGREES AND EXPANDING HORIZONTALLY. IN LATE MAY OR EARLY JUNE 2018, I REPLACED THE WINDSHIELD VIA SAFELITE AUTO. THE TOTAL BALANCE OF THE FIRST REPLACEMENT WAS ABOUT $800 - I.E. THE REPLACEMENT COST WAS ABOUT $400, BUT I WAS TOLD MORE MONEY WAS NEEDED TO PROPERLY FIX CAMERA (ADAS) PROBLEMS CAUSED BY REPLACING THE WINDSHIELD. IN JUNE 2018, THE NEW WINDSHIELD CRACKED, ALMOST 1 OR 2 WEEKS AFTER I JUST HAD IT REPLACED. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, I NOTICED A TINY OBJECT HIT MY WINDSHIELD. I CONTACTED THE DEALER. IN AUGUST 2018, THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT KNEW OF NO PROBLEMS WITH THE 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS WINDSHIELDS.

Summary

THE VEHICLE STARTED NORMALLY BUT WHEN I REACHED ABOUT TWO BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE, THE PRIUS STARTED TO ACT AS IF THE ELECTRIC MOTORS WERE NOT ENGAGING. THE ENGINE DID NOT ENGAGE EITHER AND THE GAS PEDAL WAS UNRESPONSIVE. THE FIRST TIME THIS OCCURRED, I WAS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A 4-WAY INTERSECTION UNTIL I SHUT DOWN THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTED IT. AFTER I RESTARTED THE PRIUS, IT CONTINUED BEHAVING ERRATICALLY. IT SOUNDED AND FELT LIKE THE GAS MOTOR HAD ENGAGED BUT THE ELECTRIC MOTOR HAD NOT. IT ALSO FELT LIKE THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING/NOT ENGAGING AND I HAD TO REV THE MOTOR TO GET THE TRANSMISSION TO ENGAGE (WHICH IT DID WITH A KICK LIKE IT WAS BEING PUT INTO GEAR). THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES SO FAR. I HAD A PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE ON THE LAST INCIDENT. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES, BUT THEY ARE UNABLE TO FIND ANY ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE. I REACHED OUT TO TOYOTA TO SEE IF THEY COULD ADDRESS THE ISSUE, BUT THEY SAID THAT THEIR FIELD TECH WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY PROBLEM. I AM WORRIED THAT THIS CAR WILL FAIL IN TRAFFIC AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE INCIDENT DATES ARE JUNE 20, JULY 2 AND JULY 27, 2018. THE ONLY INDICATION THAT SOMETHING WAS ABNORMAL ON JULY THE 27TH. WAS A LOWER MPG READING ON MY DISPLAY. OTHER THAN THAT, THERE WAS NO WARNING OR ERROR CODES DISPLAYED.

Summary

IN MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN WITH THE TOYOTA DYNAMIC CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED ON THE HIGHWAY BETWEEN 55 AND 70 MPH, THE PRIUS HAS DANGEROUSLY ACCELERATED ITSELF TOWARDS A CAR IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF MY CAR AND WOULD HAVE CREATED A FRONT-TO-REAR COLLISION IF I WAS NOT EXTREMELY VIGILANT AND MANUALLY BRAKED AND CANCELED THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE SYSTEM WITHIN 10-20 FEET OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE SYSTEM SEEMS TO OPERATE BLINDLY IN MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN AND WILL ACCELERATE TO USER-SET SPEED EVEN WHEN A CAR IS TRAVELING SLOWER IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF MY VEHICLE. I STRONGLY SUSPECT THE PRE-COLLISION BRAKING IS FAILING AT THE SAME TIME AS THE DYNAMIC CRUISE (IN RAIN) SINCE IT RELIES ON THE SAME COMPONENTS. THE PRIUS PRIME NEEDS TO BE REPROGRAMMED TO NOT ALLOW DYNAMIC CRUISE ENGAGEMENT IN MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION BECAUSE DRIVER VISIBILITY IS ALREADY IMPAIRED UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. IF THIS DID NOT OCCUR MULTIPLE TIMES, I WOULD NOT HAVE BELIEVED IT WAS ACTUALLY HAPPENING. THE PRIUS MANUAL SAYS THAT RAIN CAN CAUSE THE SYSTEM TO NOT BEHAVE AS INTENDED; HOWEVER, IN THAT CASE IT NEEDS TO BE AUTOMATICALLY DISABLED SO IT DOES NOT CREATE A VERY FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY. THIS IS GOING TO COST LIVES IF IT'S NOT REPROGRAMMED. I WOULD BE SURPRISED IF THIS WAS THE ONLY TOYOTA THAT EXHIBITS THIS DANGEROUS BEHAVIOR. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT LIVES CAN BE SAVED WITH A SIMPLE REPROGRAM OF THE SYSTEM TO NOT ALLOW OPERATION UNDER CONDITIONS THAT CAN CREATE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION INTO A SLOWER MOVING VEHICLE. TOYOTA SHOULD SAVE THEMSELVES MILLIONS IN POTENTIAL LIABILITY AND TAKE THIS SUGGESTION SERIOUSLY.

ON I-75 @70 MILES/HR, WITH AROUND 800 MILEAGE NEW PRIUS, TOYO TIRE OF THE REAR TIRE POPPED OUT AND ROLLED ON THE I-75 WITHOUT ANY WARNING LIGHTS BUT WITH SOME GAS SMELL, PUTTING ALL THE OCCUPANTS TO HIGH RISK OF CRASH ON THE BUSIEST FREEWAY, AND THE AGONY OF THE INCIDENT. I TOWED MY PRIUS TO VALDOSTA TOYOTA, EVEN THOUGH TOYOTA CARE SHOULD COVER ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE, THEY CHARGED ME FOR TOWING AND PUTTING NEW TIRE. THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE PRIUS GAS SYSTEM OR TOYO TIRE OF PRIUS. AFTER AROUND 100 MILES I TRIED TO PUT IN GAS, PRIUS TANK DIDN'T TAKE GAS, WENT TO CLEAR WATER TOYOTA AND GOT IT REPAIRED, DESPITE EXPLAINING TOYOTA CARE AND LESS THAN 1K MILEAGE, THEY CHARGED ME FOR REPAIR. CONTACTED TOYOTA CARE AND MY LOCAL DEALER, THEY SAID VALDOSTA AND CLEAR WATER TOYOTA SHOULD NOT HAVE CHARGED. THE DEALERS SAY TOYOTA CARE NEED TO REIMBURSE THE REPAIRS AT LEAST, AS THEY CAN'T COMPENSATE THE AGONY OF LOSING A TIRE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY. TOYOTA CARE DOESN'T EVEN BOTHER TO REGISTER A COMPLAINT AND INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE AND DETERMINE PRIUS GAS SYSTEM OR TOYO TIRE IS UNDER FAULT. EVEN AFTER GOING THROUGH 3 TOYOTA DEALERS AND CONTACTING TOYOTA MANY TIMES, THERE IS NO SOLUTION, SO A) WHO INVESTIGATES THE ISSUE? B) HOW TO ENSURE TOYOTACARE FOLLOWS THEIR PLAN? C) HOW TO BRING RESPONSIBILITY TO TOYOTA OR TOYO, THEIR SUPPLIER, SHOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY AS PART OF THE CAR WARRANTY? D) HOW TO ENSURE THE KINDS OF HORRIFYING INCIDENTS DO NOT HAPPEN TO ANY OTHER FAMILY IN FUTURE?

TOYOTA PRIUS PRIME 2017 LANE DEPARTURE WARNING WITH STEERING ASSIST. THIS STEERING ASSIST FUNCTION DOES NOT WORK AS IT DOES IN ANY OTHER TOYOTA MODEL. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH TOYOTA ENGINEERING AND MET WITH A TOYOTA TECHNICAL REPRESENTATIVE AND THEY ADMIT THAT THE STEERING ASSIST FUNCTION DOES NOT WORK AS IT DOES IN ANY OTHER TOYOTA MODEL. AS YOU WILL SEE FROM MY ATTACHED DOCUMENT THIS FUNCTION REALLY DOESN'T WORK AT ALL. I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS A REGULATED SAFETY FEATURE OR NOT BUT IT WAS SUGGESTED BY A TOYOTA EMPLOYEE THAT I MAKE THE NHTSA AWARE OF THIS FAILURE AS IT COULD BE A SAFETY CONCERN THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED AT. I HAVE DRIVEN AT LEAST 5 PRIUS PRIME ADVANCED AND ALL HAVE THIS PROBLEM IN THAT THE STEERING ASSIST FUNCTION DOES NOT WORK IN ANY OF THEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS ADVERTISED AND SOLD TO THE CONSUMER AS A INTEGRAL PART OF THE TOYOTA SAFETY SUITE THAT IS ON ALL TOYOTA VEHICLES. THIS STEERING ASSIST FUNCTION DOES WORK ON ALL OF THE OTHER TOYOTA MODELS AS ADVERTISED AND AS A CONSUMER WOULD EXPECT. PLEASE REVIEW MY ATTACHED DOCUMENT THAT DESCRIBES THE PROBLEM AND MY ATTEMPTS TO GET TOYOTA TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THE STOCK ANSWER I HAVE RECEIVED FROM MOST TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVES IS THAT THE STEERING ASSIST "WORKS AS IT IS ENGINEERED TO DO" MY STOCK ANSWER TO THIS IS WHY DOES IT FUNCTION DIFFERENTLY THAN EVERY OTHER VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH THE TOYOTA SAFETY SUITE. I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED A COHERENT REPLY TO THAT QUESTION.

Summary

MY COMPLAINT HAS TO DO WITH A DESIGN "FEATURE" OF MY NEW VEHICLE. HAVING OWNED IT LESS THAN A WEEK, NO RELATED INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED. HOWEVER, I SEE AN UNNECESSARY RISK DUE TO THIS DESIGN. MY NEW CAR, A 2017 PRIUS 4 TOURING, COMES WITH NO SPARE TIRE. THERE ARE THREE PRIUS MODELS LIKE THAT, EVEN FOR THE 2018 MODEL YEAR. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THE RELATED SAFETY ASPECTS OF THAT TOYOTA DECISION? IN THE WESTERN US, ESPECIALLY, THERE ARE MANY PAVED ROADS WITH LITTLE OR NO TRAFFIC AND SPOTTY, IF ANY, CELL PHONE SERVICE. TYPICALLY, THEY ARE IN DESERT AREAS, SCORCHING IN THE SUMMER, FRIGID IN WINTER, WITH TOWNS FAR APART. IF A DRIVER OF A CAR LIKE MINE HAS A TIRE BLOWOUT IN SUCH A REMOTE AREA, HE/SHE IS LITERALLY STRANDED. THE SUPPLIED TIRE REPAIR KIT WILL NOT HELP IN CASE OF A BLOWOUT. AVERAGE OWNERS WILL NOT EVEN KNOW THEY ARE WITHOUT A SPARE TIRE UNTIL THEY NEED ONE. MORE THAN AN INCONVENIENCE, THIS COULD BE FATAL TO THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS IN EXTREME HEAT OR COLD. THE DRIVER'S ONLY HOPE IS THAT ANOTHER VEHICLE WILL HAPPEN ALONG TO HELP. A RISK LIKE THAT DOES NOT JUSTIFY A MANUFACTURER'S CUTTING COSTS TO BOOST PROFITS. IMHO, THE NHTSA SHOULD TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS: 1 - ANY CAR SOLD NEW WITHOUT A USABLE SPARE SHOULD BE RECALLED AND RETROFITTED. 2 - MANUFACTURERS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SELL CARS IN THE USA WITHOUT A USABLE SPARE. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO VOICE MY OPINION. I HOPE YOU WILL AGREE THAT ABSENCE OF A SPARE TIRE IS AN UNNECESSARY RISK.

I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT FRAGILE AND VULNERABLE PRIUS WINDSHIELDS. I BELIEVE TOYOTA NEEDS TO CORRECT THIS DEFECT, REPAIR MY WINDSHIELD AND PERFORM ANY NECESSARY RE-CALIBRATION. I HAVE UPLOADED TWO PICTURES.

TRAVELING EAST ON THE 10 THROUGH PHOENIX AZ, MY WINDSHIELD WAS HIT BY SOMETHING SO SMALL I COULDN'T SEE IT. CAUSED A STAR LESS THAN 1/3" BUT ALSO A WINDING CRACK ALMOST 1 FT. LONG. THE REAL PROBLEM IS THAT EVERY DAY WHEN I COME OUT TO MY CAR, THE CRACK HAS GROWN IN A SNAKING PATTERN. IT DOES NOT GROW AT ALL WHILE DRIVING. I PERIODICALLY CHECK IT WHILE DRIVING. TODAY THE CRACK GREW OVER 1 FT. IN LENGTH OVER THE COURSE OF THE MORNING, JUST SITTING IN THE DRIVE WAY.

MY NEW TACOMA HAS A WHINE/HOWL COMING FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. PER MY DEALER, THEY HAVE STARTED A TAS CASE WITH TOYOTA CORP AND WERE ADVISED THAT THE CONDITION DESCRIBED IS KNOWN, AND UNDER INVESTIGATION. TAS SAYS THERE ARE NO RECOMMENDED REPAIRS AT THIS TIME. THE PROBLEM IS OCCURRING BETWEEN 30-65 MPH WHEN DECELERATING AND FEATHERING THE THROTTLE, BUT IS NOW BECOMING MORE PRONOUNCE WITH TIME AND MORE MILEAGE. I'M CONCERNED THAT THE ISSUE COULD POTENTIALLY BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS ISSUE IS OCCURRING WITH 2016-17 TACOMA'S. MANY DIFFERENTIALS HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY DEALERS; EVEN THE REPLACEMENT DIFFERENTIALS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE.
