Summary

My car started to loose coolant around 50K. This is a common problem for MK7 Golf which is usually caused by failure of the waterpump housing. VW is aware of this issue since 2016 but never addressed this problem. I request a formal investigation of this issue and demand VW to recall the vehicles.

The shift boot trim piece was poorly designed and is the metal is peeling and has cut my hand several times. It has happened once while driving and I had to stop at a gas station to get a paper towel to stop the bleeding. The trim piece peels right where the opening to the storage cubby is. The dealer is aware of the situation, but will not cover the cost of replacing the part.

Summary

In December 2021, my fuel gauge read empty, so I stopped at a gas station near the Honolulu Airport and VW Honolulu dealership. As I was pumping the gasoline, it began overflowing from the top of the tank, although I had just started pumping. I immediately removed the pump which is when gas began leaking out of the bottom of the tank, like a faucet. Luckily, I was right by the dealership, and was able to make it there without anything dangerous happening. After assessing my vehicle, the VW technicians said there was an internal issue with a faulty fuel tank. They said this issue was not something that I caused. Attached are the invoices and notes provided by the technicians.

The contact owns a 2017 Volkswagen Golf R. The contact stated that the fuel gauge remained on Empty after fueling the vehicle. Additionally, fuel accumulated in the EVAP system, and leaked out from the fuel tank onto the rear passenger's side wheel. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that recalls were VIN specific and there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V647000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.

Summary

Fuel leaking out of rear passenger side bumper close to exhaust. VW Dealer believes related to suction pump failure located in the fuel tank. Same issue as detailed in Safety Recall Code: 20Y6 for 2015 and 2016 VW GTI models, but no recall issued for 2017. Component has not been removed from car and can be inspected when needed. Fuel leaking out of vehicle near exhaust components while driving - fire risk. Was notified by another motorist while at stop light of rapid fuel leak onto road surface. Dealer has confirmed issue. Vehicle inspected by Dealer, but component in question (suction pump from earlier recall) is internal to the fuel tank and requires disassembly. Waiting on feedback from VW corporate. Summary

The aluminum trim piece around gear shift has come up from the plastic underneath. It is the front of the trim next to where there is a charging outlet and small item storage. When removing my phone one day, I caught my finger on the raised (delaminated) section of the aluminum and sliced my finger open. I did not need stitches, but did use butterfly closures while it healed. I removed the part that was sticking up so now the sharp edge is closer to the exposed plastic and not as much of a hazard. A quick online search shows this is a fairly common problem with many people reporting a cut finger/hand.

Summary

On 10/23/2021 in the process of refueling the vehicle in question the gas pump shut off after only pumping less than a gallon of gas. Repeated attempts yielded the same results. Additionally gas would back up and flow down the over flow tube onto the ground. I tried other pumps on subsequent dates with same result. I was able to get enough gas into the tank, less than a gallon at a time, to drive the vehicle from 10/23/2021 to 11/2/2021 when the vehicle began to buck or act like it would shut off. I was able to drive home and stopped driving the vehicle on 11/2/2021. I contacted the local VW dealer and made an appointment to have the vehicle looked at on 11/16/2021. This problem isn't unique to my vehicle. There have been a lot of VW/AUDI vehicles that experienced the same or similar problems. On 11/16/2021 the dealer verified the problem I described. Dealer could not get flap to open in tank. Dealer removed EVAP canister and fuel sprayed out. Dealer replaced fuel tank, EVAP canister and other related parts. Repairs were completed and $3896.69 later vehicle runs fine. There were no warning lights to warn me of a problem. Of course, when gasoline and gasoline vapors are present there is always the possibility of damage, injury, or death.

Summary

Safety: Had a charcoal canister saturated with gasoline resulting in a fuel leak; gasoline was dripping down the rear right side of the car via the charcoal filter and soaking the rear fender. Raw fuel was also being pumped into the air intake of the engine (where air is supposed to go). Fuel tank was bulging due to the high pressure and could have cracked. Other symptoms: Had fuel spillback while refueling, and also could not fill the tank because the handle kept clicking. Car was riding rough and jerking randomly. Failed component: Dealer determined a faulty suction pump was causing liquid fuel to fill the charcoal canister while the car is running. This is the same part that was previously recalled in earlier 2015-2016 Golfs (NHTSA Safety Recall Code: 20Y6, published December 2016). My 2017 Golf (16k miles) was manufactured April 2017 and sold to me in October 2017. On the 2017 Golf, the suction pump is now molded inside the fuel tank in an inaccessible location and cannot be serviced; the entire fuel tank must be replaced. Reproduction: The dealer disconnected the vent lines from the fuel tank and proved that liquid fuel was venting out of the fuel tank and into the charcoal canister via the suction pump (see attached invoice). Inspection: The car was not inspected by the manufacturer, only the dealer. Warnings: There were no warnings or lights. When I first noticed my car jerking, I ran my OBD-II scanner and found a code "P0461 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Range/Performance" but the car did not report this to the driver (see attached image). Rectifications: The fuel tank should be recalled, and Volkswagen should release a software update to make the P0461 code trigger a Check Engine Light.

Summary

The vehicle had been making mild clunking noises for some time (at least 2.5 years) during some combinations of turns/bumps. When took to mechanic in January 2020, the sound would not reproduce during test drive, so problem was not diagnosed. Clunking sound became more pronounced over time, until on 8/27/21 while driving a neighborhood road, there was a loud clank, as if some metal part came loose. Then there was very loud clunking, as if a metal part was knocking around loose - more pronounced when turning or going over bumps. Upon inspection by a mechanic later in the day, the sway bar had come loose due to one of the bolts on the driver side sway bar bracket had come out. Both this mechanic and later, the Volkswagen dealer mechanic, said this was very odd, since they normally only see sway bar damage when a car has been in an accident. My car has never been in any kind of accident. Sway bars help ensure a vehicle doesn’t roll too much when handling turns. Aside from safety, sway bars help prevent lopsided wheel alignment and work to maintain an overall better grip on the road. A faulty sway bar puts the vehicle at risk for rolling during turns. My belief is that there was something faulty about the sway bar mounting bracket or bolt which explains the mild clunking I heard prior to deterioration (more frequent clunking) and ultimate failure (on 8/27/21). I have a write up of the inspection and repair from the dealer. I also have photos from the dealer prior to the repair.

Summary

My 2017 VW Golf has been leaking oil and coolant. It was taken to a VW dealership where the problem was diagnosed as a leaking auxiliary bracket gasket behind the thermostat housing. The service advisor told me that the car could randomly undergo a catastrophic loss of power if the component were to totally fail. He advised me not to drive the vehicle due to this possibility and the safety issues involved with abrupt loss of power, especially at highway speeds. I requested that this component be repaired under the VW Powertrain Warranty which is still in force for my vehicle but this coverage has been denied by VW Customer Care. The car continues to leak but has not yet lost power. I am concerned that this is a major safety issue for my car. The car is available for inspection upon request.

Summary

Issues with thermostat housing: the part fails, causing a slow coolant leak. Coolant light eventually comes on. I bought my car in fall 2016. Issue first occurred and was diagnosed and fixed by dealer under warranty in April 2020. It has now (August 2021) reoccurred and has been diagnosed again by the dealer as the same issue. This should be a lifetime part. I should not have had to replace this part twice within a little more than a year, on a car that is just about five years old. Safety issue: possibility of sudden failure/overheating that might leave the driver stranded by the side of the road. Numerous others have reported this issue occurring repeatedly; please see https://www.reddit.com/r/GolfGTI/comments/drna5m/mk775_thermostat_housing_issue_and_coolant_loss/ VW has also settled a class action on a similar issue on an older generation of cars (Coffeng, et al. v. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.) A class action involving the current generation of cars is currently in progress (Zhao, et al., vs. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., et al.).

Summary

Panoramic sunroof drains leaked water into passenger compartment down the A pillar on the drivers side. Leak was intense and occurred during rain, even light rain or mist. Material covering the A pillar was soaked through, and water droplets were dripping from the pillar onto the driver and dashboard. Water soaked the gauge cluster electronics and airbag contained within the A pillar. The electronics continued to operate, and water did not immediately cause them to malfunction. No warning lights illuminated. The windshield would become foggy any time there was moisture outside and visibility was severely reduced even when using the defroster. This occurred for the entire length I owned the vehicle, even after multiple drain cleanings at a dealer/ technician, and inspections at a Volkswagen dealer. Volkswagen and the dealer I purchased the used vehicle from were uncooperative in fixing this problem, which began within weeks of my vehicle ownership. Volkswagen dealer service department admitted this is a known issue. I took the vehicle to be inspected and repaired, which did not fix my issue after multiple attempts. I have since sold the vehicle with the known defect at a large loss because I was afraid for my safety and the safety of my family.

Summary

While driving in the left hand lane on a divided 4-lane (2 lanes each direction) road, a car in front of me slowed in order to make a left hand turn. I braked to slow, looked and saw space in the adjacent lane, moved into that lane and pressed the accelerator to get to the speed of the approaching traffic in that lane. There was no throttle response at first so the approaching traffic was quickly closing the gap. I lifted my foot off the accelerator and then immediately pressed it again at which the throttle responded and I was able to accelerate to the speed of the approaching traffic (in this case a large dump truck) and narrowly avoided a rear-end collision. I have complained of this kind of throttle response hesitation at service visits to two different VW dealers, both of which were unable to reproduce the condition and for which they detected no error codes. I bought the car as a used car in Feb 2019. The VW dealership from which I bought the car did not disclose any such problem with the car, which car they claimed to have provided service for the previous owner. The problem has occurred intermittently since I have owned the car and I have been unable to reproduce it successfully for service personnel during service visits. Today's occurrence was the closest I have come to a collision with another vehicle. With the next occurrence I might not be so lucky.

While driving in light, medium or heavy rain, water makes it into the front and back of the cab of the vehicle. When it comes in through the front water drips on my wife while driving which is distracting. When it comes in through the back the humidity builds and fogs the windows which makes it unsafe to drive. My local VW service center tells me the drain tubes are clogged. I have taken my vehicle in five times for clogged drain tubes. Our service advisor Robert Dominguez confirmed the problem. Our service technician Paul Macfarland inspected the vehicle and components. PCV (POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION) VALVE MALFUNCTION. VW'S PCV VALVE, ALSO SOMETIMES CALLED THE OIL SEPARATOR VALVE, WHICH IS FOUND ON MANY OF THEIR CARS/SUVS BECOMES FAULTY AROUND 40-50K MILES. WHAT OFTEN HAPPENS IS THE THE VALVE FAILS TO VENT INTERNAL ENGINE PRESSURE, WHICH CAUSES THE PRESSURE TO BUILD UP WITHIN THE ENGINE. EVENTTUALLY THE PRESSURE WILL FIND SOME PLACE TO VENT, USUALLY OUT OF WEAKEST OIL GASKET POINT, OFTEN BEING THE REAR MAIN SEAL AND VALVE COVER. SINCE THE EXHAUST IS BEHIND THE ENGINE, THERE IS A CHANCE THAT OIL CAN SPRAY ONTO THE HOT EXHAUST. MY GOLF LEAKED OIL FROM THE REAR MAIN SEAL WHEN THE PCV FAILED. EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY, VW DIDN'T WANT TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM UNLESS I WAS WILLING TO PAY FOR IT. THIS MALFUNCTIONING PCV VALVE IS A REGULAR PROBLEM ON VW'S AND COULD POSE A ROOT FAILURE LEADING TO A POTENTIAL VEHICLE FIRE.

ON OR ABOUT 6.13.2019, MY 2017 VW GOLF ALLTRACK SE LEAKED WATER THROUGH THE LIGHT IN THE ROOF, BEHIND THE VISOR (DRIVER'S SIDE) WHILE STATIONARY. EACH TIME THE HEADLINER WAS STAINED, WATER SAT IN THE LIGHT AND IT LEAKED ALL OVER MY LAP. AS OF 6.11.2020, IT IS STILL LEAKING. THIS APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE AND A CLASS ACTION SUIT IS PENDING. VW CLAIMS THIS IS A REPAIR DEFECT, NOT A MANUFACTURE DEFECT AND ONLY OFFERS TO COVER 75% OF A $12K REPAIR ON A VEHICLE THAT HAS 34K MILES, BEEN MOSTLY GARAGE KEPT OR COVERED AND ALL MAINTENANCE COMPLETED ONLY AT VW DEALERSHIPS. I HAVE FILED SEVERAL COMPLAINTS WITH VW. THEY STATE THAT SINCE VEHICLE IS OUTSIDE OF 3 YEAR WARRANTY (3YR/36K MI), THEY ARE OFFERING GOODWILL. I DO NOT FEEL IT IS FAIR OR RIGHT TO HAVE TO SPEND EVEN $1 TO REPAIR A KNOWN STRUCTURAL DEFECT RELATED TO THE SPOT WELDS AND SUNROOF, WHICH WERE LIKELY THE CAUSE OF EACH AND EVERY LEAK THAT THE CAR HAS EXPERIENCED. ADDITIONALLY, THE CAR LIKES TO SUDDENLY ATTEMPT TO ACTIVATE THE COLLISION WARNINGS FOR NO REASON - AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH, THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AS WELL, POSSIBLY RELATED TO WATER DAMAGE. VW OF AMERICA REFUSES TO TAKE ANY ACTION BEYOND THEIR OFFER OF 75% COVERAGE OF COSTS AS GOODWILL ON A CAR THAT WASN'T BUILT RIGHT TO BEGIN WITH AND FRANKLY, IS A RISK TO THE SAFETY OF MY TWO CHILDREN, 4 & 2, AS A SPOT WELD IN THE SUNROOF IS SURELY A SIGN THAT IT'S LIKELY NOT THE ONLY STRUCTURAL DEFECT OR FAILURE OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS MY 4TH VW AND CLEARLY WILL BE MY LAST.

LEAKY SUNROOF TO DO INCORRECT REWORK IN PRODUCTION OF THE WELDING POINTS OF THE SUNROOF FRAME AREA. SPOT WELDS AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE SUNROOF OPENING MAY BE TOO LARGE.* THIS PREVENTS THE OUTER SUNROOF SEAL FROM PROPERLY ADHERING TO THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE, ALLOWING WATER TO LEAK THROUGH THE SEAL. INSUFFICIENT CLEANING PROCESS PRIOR TO APPLYING OUTER SUNROOF SEAL. THE SUNROOF FRAME OPENING MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY CLEANED PRIOR TO APPLICATION OF THE ACRYLIC TAPE ON THE OUTER SUNROOF SEAL. THIS PREVENTS THE OUTER SUNROOF SEAL FROM PROPERLY ADHERING TO THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE, ALLOWING WATER TO LEAK THROUGH THE SEAL.

MY VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER RECALL, EVEN THOUGH 400,000 + OTHER VWS HAD THE SAME RECALL...

ABOUT A MONTH OR SO AFTER I GOT THE CAR, IT STARTED MAKING A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT (AND NOW WHEN YOU TURN IT BACK TO THE RIGHT TO STRAIGHTEN OUT) NOTICEABLE AT VERY SLOW SPEEDS SUCH AS PULLING IN AND OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. I TOOK IT TO THE RENO VW AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO NOISE. I TOOK IT BACK AGAIN MONTHS LATER AND FIRST THEY SAID THERE WAS NO NOISE, AND I ASKED THAT THEY CHECK IT AGAIN. THEN THEY TRIED TO TELL ME IT WAS FROM MY BIKE RACK WHICH IS ON THE REAR OF MY CAR, ONLY ON IN THE SUMMER, AND THE NOISE IS THERE YEAR ROUND IN THE FRONT OF THE CAR. THEN THEY GOT ON THE PHONE WITH "TECH SUPPORT" AND WERE TOLD IT'S A CLOCK SPRING AND IT'S A NORMAL NOISE. IN FORTY YEARS OF DRIVING, I HAVE NEVER HEARD SUCH A NOISE. TWO PEOPLE I KNOW HAVE THE SAME CAR, AND THEIR VEHICLES DO NOT MAKE THIS NOISE. I SEE THAT VW HAS HAD CLOCK SPRING RECALLS ON SOME OF THEIR OTHER VEHICLES. MY VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, AND THIS SHOULD BE FIXED. THIS IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE THAT I WOULD PREFER TO AVOID.

PURCHASED A USED 2017 VW ALLTRACK APRIL 2 YEARS AGO. PRESENTLY HAS ~30K MILES. CHRISTMAS DAY THIS YEAR, 4 WARNING LIGHTS APPEARED LIT-UP IN THE CONSOLE-AIR-BAG, TIRE PRESSURE, ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED, AND ADVISED THAT WATER-INTRUSION OCCURRED DUE TO BLOCKED SUN-ROOF DRAINS [WHICH ARE NOT IMMEDIATELY ACCESSIBLE. ADVISED THAT IT WAS NOT CONSIDERED STANDARD MAINTENANCE AND AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR. ALSO REPAIRED WERE CORRODED WIRING CONNECTORS AND CORRODED WIRES! DEALER ADVISED THAT ONCE CORRECTED 'IT SHOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM AGAIN' WHICH WE DON'T TRUST OR BELIEVE. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN AND WELL-DOCUMENTED PROBLEM. I HAVE A 2017 GOLF R EQUIPPED WITH DSG TRANSMISSION, AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING AND ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL. OCCASIONALLY THE CAR WOULD MAKE A CONTINUOUS AND PERIODIC CLICKING NOISE THAT CAN LAST FOR A FEW MINUTES WHEN IN MOTION AND WHEN BRAKE IS NOT APPLIED. AS SOON AS I STEP ON THE BRAKE, THE CLICKING STOPS. WHEN BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED, THE CLICKING COMES BACK. THE PROBLEM STARTED IN MAY/JUNE 2018 WHEN THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 14000 MILES, AND HAS BEEN DOING THAT EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE SINCE THEN. I BROUGHT IT TO A VW DEALER IN JULY 2018, BUT BECAUSE THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE, THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND OUT THE ROOT CAUSE. THERE WAS NO ERROR CODE EITHER. HOWEVER THEY SUSPECTED THAT THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM CERTAIN RELAYS IN THE ABS / BRAKING SYSTEM, WHICH IS CONCERNING AS IT COULD POTENTIALLY BE A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS PAST SPRING I NOTICED THE CAR'S HEADLINER WAS WET AND STAINED. IT THEN BEGAN TO DRIP COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF WATER INTO THE VEHICLE DURING HEAVY RAINSTORMS. THE CAR IS ONLY A YEAR AND A HALF OLD AND HAS 20,000 MILES. BUT THERE ARE WATER STAINS EVERYWHERE AND IT WILL BE A MOLD ISSUE SOON, I'M AFRAID. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY. THEY SAID IT'S A MAINTENANCE ISSUE, NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE BECAUSE THE DRAINS THAT RELEASE THE WATER FROM SUNROOF ARE ALL BLOCKED WITH DEBRIS. DEALER FIRST ASKED ME IF I HAD JUST SIMPLY LEFT THE SUN ROOF OPEN AND WAS VERY PATRONIZING, BY ASKING ME IF THERE WAS JUST A LEAF STUCK UP THERE, CALLING ME HUNNY OVER THE PHONE. I TOLD HIM NO, SOMETHING WAS WRONG AND WE DROPPED IT OFF. $600 TO CLEAR DRAINS. WE REFUSED BECAUSE WE FOUND MANY OTHER PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME CAR AND THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THE PROBLEM. WE READ THE VW HELPED COVER THE COSTS FOR MANY PEOPLE SO WE CALLED VW CUSTOMER CARE. I ASKED FOR A BUYBACK OR FOR THEM TO FIX THE CAR. THEY CALLED ME BACK SAYING THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND REFUSED TO ADMIT THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE CAR. EVEN IF I JUST GOT THE DRAINS CLEARED, THERE WAS STILL DAMAGE DONE BY THE "MAINTENANCE" NOT BEING TAKEN CARE OF. "MAINTENANCE" THAT WE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT AND THERE IS NOTHING IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL ABOUT CLEARING THE DRAINS UNTIL AROUND 40,000 MILES. I WAS ASKED IF I PARKED UNDER TREES. WELL, YEAH, WE CAMP A LOT. THIS CAR IS ADVERTISED AS AN ADVENTURE CAR. I ALSO DON'T HAVE THE LUXURY OF PARKING IN A GARAGE. I'M A TEACHER. I WORK HARD TO MAKE CAR PAYMENTS, BUT I BOUGHT BRAND NEW CAR NOT KNOWING I WOULD NEED TO BE SPENDING HUNDRED UPON HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO "MAINTAIN" SUNROOF DRAINS. FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS, I WILL HAVE HAD THIS CAR 3 YEARS IN NOV.2019, AND FOR THE PAST 2 YRS+ THE DEALER HAS NOT FOUND THE TROUBLE WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEATBELT SENSOR COMING ON FOR NO REASON. IT HAS HAPPENED ON CITY STREETS- CANNOT RECALL IT ON HIGHWAY DRIVING. IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS THE SEATBELT UNIT WAS REPLACED- BUT THE LIGHTS AND BEEPING HAS RETURNED. I AM NOW THINKING IT MAY BE THE SEAT - SENSOR. NOT THE BELT. I READ/VIEWED VIDEOS THAT THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE ELECTRICAL OF SOME PEOPLE'S SEATBELT HOUSING, FIXED WITH WELDS. MOST RECENTLY IT IS HAPPENING MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE DRIVING. IT HAPPENED 7 TIMES WHILE DRIVING MY CAR FROM WORK TO THE DEALER, <10 MILES CITY STREET DRIVE. MY PANORAMIC SUNROOF HAS HAD AN ISSUE WITH WATER INTRUSION. DECEMBER OF 2017 I TOOK THE CAR INTO VW OF POHANKA, MARYLAN. THEY REPLACED THE HEADLINER, DRAINAGE TUBES, AND SMOOTHED OUT THE WELDS TO TRY AND FIX THE PROBLEM. I NOTICED THAT THE LEAK IS BACK WITH WATER STAINS ON THE A-PILLAR AND OVERHEAD. THE PROBLEM IS WE DO NOT KNOW WHERE THE WATER HAD LEAKED INTO. WE ARE AFRAID THAT THE WATER INTRUSION MAY CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS DOWN THE ROAD AND DO NOT WANT ANY ELECTRICAL ISSUES DUE TO THE WATER LEAK. OUR MAIN CONCERN IS THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIRBAGS LOCATED ON THE B-PILLAR AND THE POSSIBLE HEALTH ISSUES OF MOLD AND RUST. THE PROBLEM PERSISTS DURING THE RAIN SEASON.

THE SUBJECT VEHICLE, VIN: [XXX] A 2018 GOLF ALLTRACK SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING DOWNSHIFTED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS CAUSING RAPID DECELERATION. THIS OCCURRED ON A TWO-LANE RURAL HIGHWAY AND AT ABOUT 60 MPH DOWN TO 40 MPH. THE YELLOW "!" ILLUMINATED WITH A MESSAGE LIKE "TRANS ERROR, REV UNAVAILABLE, SEE DEALER". WHILE I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROADWAY SAFELY, THE TWO VEHICLES BEHIND WERE CAUGHT OFF-GUARD BY THE SUDDEN AND RAPID DECELERATION. I CONFIRMED THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT OPERATE IN REVERSE AND THE PADDLE SHIFTERS WERE ALSO NOT ABLE TO CHANGE GEARS. MAXIMUM ROAD SPEED WAS 41 MPH @ 9100 RPM, SO UNSAFE TO CONTINUE. THERE WAS NO DEALER IN THE AREA, SO I CYCLED THE KEY OFF THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE AND OBTAIN SERVICE. Summary

SHATTERED SUNROOF FOR 2017 VW GOLF GTI. SUNROOF SHATTERED FOLLOWING A LOUD NOISE WITH NO OBVIOUS DIRECT CAUSE. THERE WERE NO VEHICLES AHEAD AND NO OVERHEADS OR BRIDGES IN THE AREA. EVENT TOOK PLACE ON AUGUST 16TH, 2018 ON A SUNNY MORNING (75-80F), AT 45-55MPH. THE ENTIRE SUNROOF CRACKED FOLLOWING THE LOUD NOISE AND SMALL PIECES BEGAN TO SLOWLY FALL ON TOP OF THE SEE-THROUGH FABRIC SUNROOF SHADE THAT WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. LARGER PORTIONS OF THE SUNROOF FELL AS THE VEHICLE RETURNED TO A SAFE LOCATION TO REMOVE THE REMAINING GLASS. SHATTERING GLASS POSES A SAFETY CONCERN TO DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLES, IN ADDITION TO NEARBY MOTORISTS THAT COULD GET IMPACTED BY THE GLASS DEBRIS AT HIGHER SPEEDS. THE USE OF LAMINATED GLASS COULD PREVENT THIS SAFETY CONCERN TO MOTORISTS.

THE WATER IS COMING IN ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND ON THE CENTER CONSOLE ABOVE ALL OF THE ELECTRICAL (LIGHTS, SWITCHES FOR SUNROOF, ETC) COMPONENTS. THE WINDSHIELD STAYS FOGGED UP WHEN DRIVING BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE MOISTURE IN THE CABIN. THIS AFFECTS VISIBILITY. VW SHOULD RECALL THIS VEHICLE TO REPAIR. Summary

THERE'S A WATER LEAK COMING FROM THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF. THE CAR IS USUALLY GARAGE KEPT BUT I HAD IT PARKED OUTSIDE ONE WEEKEND WHEN WE HAD BAD STORMS AND THAT'S WHEN I NOTICED THE WATER STAINS IN MY HEADLINER AND THE WATER DRIPPING DOWN INTO THE BACK HATCH AREA. THE DEALER HAD TO SEND THE CAR TO A BODY SHOP TO HAVE THEM GRIND DOWN WELDS THAT HAVE CAUSED AN OBSTRUCTION IN THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM. THERE'S STAINS IN THE HEADLINER AND AN ODOR THAT'S COMING FROM IT SO IT APPEARS TO HAVE MOLD. THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO FIX THE LEAK AND INSTALL A NEW HEADLINER BUT I'M ALSO WORRIED OF ANY ELECTRICAL DAMAGE THAT MAY ARISE AS A RESULT. IT'S BEEN ABOUT 4 WEEKS NOW AND THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO REPAIR THIS. I FEEL LIKE THIS HAS BEEN A KNOWN ISSUE AND YET THEY STILL SOLD ME THE CAR EVEN KNOWING THIS COULD BE A POSSIBILITY. I PURCHASED THE CAR IN NOVEMBER 2017 AND I BOUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO REPAIR IN JUNE 2018. THIS IS MY SECOND VOLKSWAGEN BUT WILL PROBABLY BE MY LAST. I NEED A RELIABLE CAR THAT I CAN DRIVE AND NOT ONE THAT SITS IN A REPAIR SHOP FOR WEEKS NOT KNOWING IF THE ISSUE WILL ACTUALLY BE RESOLVED. FROM OTHER FORUMS I'VE READ, THIS IS A KNOWN MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND MANY OTHERS ARE GOING THROUGH THIS SAME PAINFUL PROCESS.

Summary

2017 VW GOLF ALLTRACK: HAVE HAD THIS CAR FOR FOUR MONTHS NOW AND JUST HAD THREE DAYS WORTH OF RAIN HERE IN MICHIGAN. THE FRONT OF THE HEADLINER IS COMPLETELY SOAKED ON BOTH A-PILLARS AND AROUND THE OVERHEAD CONSOLE OF THE VEHICLE. DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS MORE THAN LIKELY WELDS THAT DIDN'T GET SMOOTHED DOWN AND THEREFORE PINCH THE TUBES THAT DRAIN THE TROUGH IN THE SUNROOF AREA NOT ALLOWING IT TO FLOW BACK INTO THE OPENING IN THE CAR. IN OTHER WORDS, VW SOLD ME A CAR WITH A KNOWN DEFECT! NOW I HAVE TO TURN MY CAR IN FOR SOME UNKNOWN AMOUNT OF TIME, HAVE THEM TEAR THE INSIDE APART, TAKE THE CAR TO A BODY SHOP AND HAVE THE BODY SHOP GRIND THE WELDS DOWN SMOOTH, THEN INSTALL A NEW HEADLINER IN THE CAR. THAT'S ALL GREAT (NOT REALLY), BUT WATER IS INCREDIBLY DESTRUCTIVE, SO WHAT ABOUT THE WATER THAT'S RUN DOWN THE A-PILLARS AND GOTTEN IN TO THE INSULATION IN THE DOORS? OR THE WATER THAT RAN LIKE A FAUCET OUT OF MY OVERHEAD CONSOLE THIS MORNING WHEN I STARTED DRIVING THAT DUMPED ALL OVER MY ELECTRONICS AND TRANSMISSION COLUMN? WHAT ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF WATER THAT WON'T BE LOOKED FOR IN THIS APPARENT FIX OF A KNOWN PROBLEM THAT THEN TURNS INTO BLACK MOLD THAT I AND MY FAMILY BREATH EVERY DAY FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR?! THIS HAS TO BE CORRECTED AS THERE IS NO WAY THIS CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOLD TO ME AND MY FAMILY WITH A KNOWN DEFECT.

Summary

THE PROBLEM PRESENTS ITSELF AS TICKING/CLICKING/CRACKING NOISE COMING FROM THE TOP OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE B-PILLAR WHEN THE BODY OF THE CAR FLEXES, FOR EXAMPLE WHEN DRIVING OVER UNEVEN ROAD (EVEN AT PARKING LOT SPEED). AFTER THE DEALERSHIP TRIED TO ADDRESS IT BY REPLACING INTERIOR PANELS AND APPLYING FOAM, THEY WERE ADVISED BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THE ISSUE IS RELATED TO A WELD JOINT, AND 'PERFORMED ADJUSTMENT TO PILLAR SEAM' (AS LISTED ON THE SERVICE RECORD). THIS FAILED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE, SO AFTER A VISIT FROM A VW REPRESENTATIVE THEY TRIED 'PEENIG OVER' THE SEAM, BUT THE NOISE IS STILL PRESENT. MY CONCERN IS THAT ANY ISSUE RELATED TO A STRUCTURAL COMPONENT OF THE CAR, SUCH AS THE B-PILLAR TO ROOF/DOOR FRAME JOINT, POTENTIALLY COMPROMISES THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AND SAFETY OF THE CAR.

I HAD MY SEAT BELT ON. MY HEAD AND BODY THRUSTED FORWARD AND BACK AND MY HEAD HIT THE LOWER PART OF THE HEAD REST HARD BECAUSE THE HEAD REST AND SEAT ARE TOO TALL (I'M SHORT) AND THE HEADREST DOESN'T FIT MY HEAD. I SUFFERED A CONCUSSION, WHIPLASH, AND SIGNIFICANT PAIN. THIS IS THE 2ND ACCIDENT WHICH WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE 1ST ACCIDENT ON 6/21/17 WHICH I PREVIOUSLY REPORTED TO YOU, VW OF AMERICA, AND DIRITO BROTHERS IN WALNUT CREEK. I SUFFERED A 2ND CONCUSSION AND WHIPLASH. BOTH TIMES, THE OTHER PARTY WAS AT FAULT AND BOTH PARTIES ADMITTED THEY WERE AT FAULT AND I DID NOTHING WRONG BOTH TIMES. I REQUESTED THAT VW RECALL THESE HEADRESTS AND SEATS AND REPLACE THEM WITH HEADRESTS AND SEATS THAT ARE ADJUSTABLE AND FIT PROPERLY FOR SHORT PEOPLE. MY REQUEST WAS DENIED DESPITE THIS BEING A SAFETY CONCERN WHICH CAUSED MY VEHICLE DAMAGE AND MY BODY WAS INJURED. I, AM, AGAIN, RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING A RECALL SO MY HEADREST AND SEAT WILL FIT PROPERLY AND I WILL BE AT REDUCED RISK FOR INJURY WHEN THERE IS AN ACCIDENT. BOTH TIMES, I FILED CLAIMS WITH MY STATE FARM INSURANCE CO. I RECEIVED MEDICAL TREATMENT BOTH TIMES.

Summary

VEHICLE IS A 2017 VW GOLF ALLTRACK S WITH A 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION; LESS THAN 2 WEEKS OLD WITH ~400 MILES ON ODOMETER AND A LITTLE OVER 1/4 TANK OF 87-OCTANE GASOLINE. ISSUE OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 10PM ON AUGUST 25TH, 2017. VEHICLE WAS ACCELERATING AWAY FROM A RED LIGHT AT A HIGHWAY INTERSECTION CROSSING ON A SLIGHT DOWNHILL GRADE. MANUAL TRANSMISSION WAS SHIFTED FROM 1ST INTO 2ND GEAR DURING ACCELERATION, AND THE VEHICLE PROMPTLY LOST ENGINE POWER, POWER STEERING AND BRAKES NEAR THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. MY WIFE COASTED THE VEHICLE ACROSS THE INTERSECTION AND WAS ABLE TO MOVE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH THE HELP OF PASSING MOTORISTS WHO WERE KIND ENOUGH TO STOP AND HELP. THE "ENGINE" LIGHT AND "EPC" LIGHT WERE BOTH ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH. DURING THE 45 MINUTE WAIT FOR A TOW TRUCK, MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE WOULD TURN OVER AND SOMETIMES "CATCH", BUT WOULD NOT START OR IDLE. HEADLIGHTS, BLINKERS, WIPERS, ETC. REMAINED FUNCTIONAL THROUGHOUT THE ORDEAL. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE VW DEALERSHIP AND REMAINS THERE FOR DIAGNOSTICS. THERE IS NO IDENTIFICATION OF A CAUSE FOR THIS ISSUE AT THE MOMENT. IT IS WORTH NOTING THAT THIS ISSUE IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN FOR MY FAMILY AND MOTORISTS AROUND US: A NEW VEHICLE SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY LOOSING POWER AND ALL CONTROL FEATURES IS ENTIRELY UNACCEPTABLE, AND COULD VERY EASILY LEAD TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

I APOLOGIZE THAT THAT DEALER DID NOT DISCLOSE THIS INFORMATION TO YOU AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE; HOWEVER, THE DEALER WAS JUST DOING AS THEY WERE TOLD BY NHTSA. SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED MY NEW CAR IN SEPT. 2016, I COMPLAINED ABOUT MY CONCERN TO THE DEALER, DIRITO BROTHERS IN WALNUT CREEK, CA AND SPOKE TO: [XXX], SALESPERSON, [XXX], OWNER, [XXX], THE SERVICE MANAGER, AND [XXX], SERVICE CONSULTANT AND TOLD THEM SINCE THE SEAT IS TOO TALL, THE HEADREST DOESN'T GO DOWN ENOUGH TO CRADLE MY HEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HEADREST. I TOLD THEM I WAS AFRAID IF I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, MY HEAD COULD POSSIBLY HIT AT OR NEAR THE BOTTOM PART OF THE HEADREST AND I COULD POSSILBLY BE INJURED (WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED). MY NAME IS [XXX], PH # IS [XXX], EMAIL IS [XXX], AND MY MILEAGE IS 14,739. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH VW OF AMERICA, CASE #[XXX] ON 6/30/17. I TOLD THEM MY MAIN CONCERN WAS SAFETY AND FOR THE PROBLEM TO BE RESOLVED TO PREVENT INJURIES OF THEIR CUSTOMERS IN FUTURE ACCIDENTS. I SUGGESTED A RECALL AND POSSIBLE COMPENSATION. TODAY, VW STAFF, [XXX] CONTACTED ME AND TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY WOULD DO SINCE THE NHTSA (YOUR AGENCY) SAID VW HEADRESTS MEET AND EXCEED FEDERAL SAFETY STANDARDS. WHEN I ASKED TO SPEAK TO A SUPERVISOR, [XXX] PLACED ME ON-HOLD AND WHEN SHE RETURNED TO THE PHONE, SHE SAID THE SUPERVISORS WERE ALL IN A MEETING, AND THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO.
