WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH AND DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESPOND AND THE GEAR DISPLAY INDICATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION. AFTER RESTARTING THE ENGINE, THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO FLAGSHIP MOTOR CARS OF LYNNFIELD (NORTH 385 BROADWAY RTE 1, LYNNFIELD, MA) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. WHILE DRIVING 50 TO 60 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL SHOOK AND THE LANE DEPARTURE SYSTEM PREVENTED THE CONTACT FROM CHANGING LANES. AN ICON ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, INDICATING THAT THE VEHICLE WAS LEAVING THE ROAD. ALSO, THE VEHICLE MADE AN ABNORMAL NOISE AND THE BRAKES ENGAGED WITH A LOUD NOISE AND CANCELED THE LANE CHANGE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ROAD MARKINGS WERE SOLID LINES AND THAT WAS LIKELY WHY THE ROAD DEPARTURE SYSTEM WAS MORE SENSITIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MERCEDES-BENZ BELLEVUE (11850 BELL-RED ROAD, BELLEVUE, WA 98005, 425-455-8535) WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE LANE CHANGE SYSTEM ACTIVATED FOR NORMAL LANE CHANGES. THE LANE DEPARTURE FEATURE USUALLY ACTIVATED WHEN DRIVING OVER THICK WHITE LINES, SUCH AS HOV LANES. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON THE FREEWAY DURING BOTH DAY AND NIGHT AND WAS INDEPENDENT OF THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL BEING ENGAGED. THE DEALER TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE ON ANOTHER MERCEDES-BENZ 220. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100. *PM*JB
