Summary

In December 2021 the "AWD not available" warning message came on. During a trip, the cruise control did not work. Took car to dealer on January 4, 2022. Diagnostics revealed the following: oil leak in the engine, repaired under the warranty. Body controller module and body wiring failed, replaced under warranty. Power transfer unit failed, power transfer unit replaced under warranty. Car returned to me repaired on January 14, 2022.

Summary

Climate Control system freezes and will not turn on or will stop working while driving. Windows fog up with no way to defrost and cause low to no visibility while driving. No warning lights appear before this situation occurs. Car was in the shop at Spartanburg Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge in SC for a month just a few weeks after purchasing the vehicle. The problem first occurred when the vehicle had about 5,000 miles on it. Within 6-8 months the problem is happening again.

Summary

Fuel System Failure on top of 2.0 liter jeep turbocharged engine (approx. 53 - 54K miles), resulted in emptying of fuel tank over top of engine while driving on interstate. Vehicle filled after normal operation to low fuel light and driven for 29 miles to shopping center. Ran out of fuel in entrance/exit of shopping center parking lot. Attempted restart caused large volume of fuel to pour out of engine compartment onto ground. No evidence of tampering, photo of failure attached (believe under the split foil jacket). Vehicle did not leak when off, and delivered by flatbed to RI dealer the next morning. Backtracking the traveled highway path later indicated a probable in- operation failure (based on visible trail). This is consistent with approximate amount spilled in parking area and total fuel loss of 15 gallons based on tank size. Passenger compartment is tight and I do not recall it developing a strong fuel smell until attempting to run stationary. Noted 2020 Jeep Wrangler of same year had a recall notice for a 2.0 liter engine, notice 21V-665, so wondered if a similarity exists. There is concern for extreme fire risk, on-road shutdown, and environmental spill in a sensitive area. I walked the parking area where it stalled to ensure there was no large concentration of fuel mixed with the puddles from the rain. Quoted repairs are 676.00 not under warranty. Vehicle is a company car used only by myself, and has had no engine work or fuel area work, with only routine oil changes and maintenance inspection of air filters. Vehicle is waiting for backordered fuel line parts at Dealer service. This incident resulted in an extreme level of hazard to myself, environment and others, and I am surprised was considered a non warranty issue. Informed repair is outside of 36,000 mile warranty. OK, but I am a mechanical engineer with 35 yrs experience and this is worth a safety check to ensure there is not a pattern similar to several other Chrysler vehicles.

Summary

The contact owned a 2020 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while his wife was driving at 35 MPH, when approaching an intersection a vehicle coming from the opposite lane came thru and caused the driver to hit that vehicle head-on. The air bags did not deploy. There front end of the vehicle was crashed in. The driver sustained a crack sternum, bruised lungs, and hurt their foot while depressing on the brake, the contact sustained an injured right shoulder due to the seat belt, internal bruises to their sternum, ribs, and stomach, as well fluids in their lungs. There was medical treatment at the scene and took both the contact and the driver to the hospital for treatment. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard where the vehicle was deemed a total loss by the contact insurance company. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 8,000. Contact was later found to have dislocated sternum and damage to internal organs as well as damage to dialysis port. He recently was hospitalized to manage pain and monitor organs four weeks in the hospital and one week in nursing home. Now doing PT at home.

The first time- driving and the ‘D’ button on the shifter started blinking and got stuck in Drive, excellerated, couldn’t stop. Shut car off! Rest after 15 mins and scheduled repair/check. Shifter box-assembly was replaced and found to be the problem. 2nd time- got stuck in reverse and wouldn’t move. Took it to the dealer, scheduled repair/check, told to keep driving it. 3rd time- check engine light came on, stopped at dealer, told to keep prior appointment and not to clear it. Never checked it. 4th time- driving at speed of 65, car shut off, no power but had brakes. Towed to dealer car still not able to start. Currently at the dealer.

IN LESS THAN A YEAR WE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE WINDSHIELD 2 TIMES ALREADY. BOTH USING OEM REPLACEMENTS THE FIRST FROM AN EXTREMELY LIGHT IMPACT OF THE WIPER BEING PUT DOWN FROM THE STANDING UP POSITION AFTER CLEANING THE WINDOWS THE SECOND FOR NOW KNOWN REASON. THERE IS NO IMPACT MARKS JUST A CRACK GOING ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD. WHEN CONTACTING AUTO GLASS REPLACEMENT CENTERS WE WERE TOLD THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE ON CHEROKEES SINCE THE GLASS IS SO THIN NOW. BOTH TIMES THE CRACKS SPREAD ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD MAKING US THINK THAT MAYBE THE HEAT OR THE HEATED WIPERS ARE CAUSING PART OF THE PROBLEM(WE LIVE IN RI SO HEAT IN THE CAR IS USED OFTEN FOR OVER HALF THE YEAR).

HAD NO PROBLEMS, UNTIL IT SNOWED AGAIN 1/2021, THIS TIME GOT IN THE VEHICLE AND THERE ARE PUDDLES OF WATER ON BOTH THE PASSENGER'S AND DRIVER'S FLOOR BOARDS? NOT SURE WHY A VEHICLE THAT WAS SOLD WITH A "COLD WEATHER PACKAGE" CAN NOT HANDLE THE SNOW AND ICE??? MAYBE IT IS JUST ME BUT I DO NOT THINK A VEHICLE WITH JUST OVER 7000 MILES SHOULD BE LEAKING WATER INSIDE?? MAYBE I JUST HAVE TOO HIGH STANDARDS? THE RECALL STATED TIRE RUB AND EXHAUST TIPS. WELL NEEDLESS TO SAY THEY PERFORMED THE RECALL, WHICH I WAS SUSPECT OF BECAUSE I THINK THEY ARE TRYING TO HIDE A DEFECT IN MANUFACTURING OF THE VEHICLE. WELL ANYWAY THEY REPAIRED THE VEHILCE TO THERE LIKING, THEY REPLACED THE EXHAUST, AND REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WITH 18" RIMS AND STREET TIRES. AND THEY DID NOT REPLACE THE SPARE TIRE. I BELIEVE THIS WAS DONE TO ALLEVIATE ANY DEFECT THAT THE ALL TERRAIN TIRES WOULD SHOW AND CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS. AKA WARRANTY. NOW I DONT HAVE THE OFF ROAD CAPABILITIES AND 4 WHEEL DRIVE SAFETY THAT I HAD WHEN WE PURCHASED THE CAR. WITH THESE STREET TIRES WHICH ARE NOT RATED FOR SAND GRAVEL SNOW ETC, DONT WORK ON 4 WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES, AND CAUSE ME TO LOSE MILEAGE, NOW I HAVE A CAR THAT WAS PURCHASED, THE 4 TIRES WERE CHANGED, ONLY 4 RIMS WERE CHANGED AND I HAVE NO OFF ROAD CAPABILITIES. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. THE VEHICLE MADE A NOTIFICATION ON THE CLUSTER SAYING 4WD SYSTEM UNAVAILABLE, SERVICE REQUIRED. THE VEHICLE THEN BEGAN TO SHIFT RUFF AND THE ONLY WAY YOU COULD GET IT TO POINT A TO B IS IF AS SOON AS YOU STARTED IT YOU PUT IT IN SPORTS MODE. THE VEHICLE WENT INTO THE SHOP ON 10-15-2020 AND CAME OUT OF THE SHOP ON 12-4-2020 DUE TO THEM NOT BEING ABLE TO GET THE PART WHICH WAS A POWER TRANSFER UNIT. THE PART GOT DELAYED MULTIPLE TIMES. AFTER I GOT THE CAR BACK ON THE 4TH IT STARTED MAKING A RATTLING NOISE FROM THE FRONT END LIKE SOMETHING WAS LOOSE. I MESSAGED THE MECHANIC AND ADVISED HIM OF THE ISSUE AND HE TOLD ME TO TAKE IT IN THE FOLLOWING DAY AND HE WOULD LOOK AT IT. UNFORTUNATELY HE GOT SICK AND I FINALLY GOT BACK AHOLD OF HIM ON MONDAY THE 7TH TO LOOK AT IT. HE SAID IT SEEMS LIKE SOMETHING IS OUT OF TORQUE AND THAT HE WOULD GET AHOLD OF ME THE FOLLOWING DAY TO BRING IT IN SO I COULD HAVE A LOANER VEHICLE. I HAVE SINCE HEARD FROM HIM. MY CAR ALSO MADE AN ERROR CODE OF AUTO START/STOP SYSTEM NOT RESPONDING YESTERDAY THE 10TH OF DECEMBER WHICH I NOTIFIED THE MECHANIC AND HAVE YET TO GET A RESPONSE.

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS COME ON AND WARNING SOUNDS START GOING OFF. WE LOSE OUR SPEEDOMETER, FUEL GUAGE AND ALL OTHER INSTRUMENTS. THE PARKING BRAKE ENGAGES AS WE ARE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT SHIFT GEARS. WHEN STOPPED AFTER THIS INCIDENT, THE PARKING BRAKE ENGAGES AND WE ARE UNABLE TO GO FORWARD OR BACKWARDS WHILE IN GEAR. AFTER TODAYS INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T START BACK UP AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF. THIS STARTED 2 WEEKS AFTER WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND HAS BEEN A CONTINUOUS PROBLEM SINCE THAT TIME. (WE'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE FEBRUARY 2020.) THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 4 TIMES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. ONE OF THOSE TIMES IT WAS IN THE SHOP FOR 2 1/2 MONTHS AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WASN'T ABLE TO LOCATE THE PROBLEM. WE FINALLY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP 3 HOURS AWAY FROM OUR LOCATION AND THEY FIXED THE BLIND SIDE MODULE WHICH THEY STATED SHORTED OUT THE REMAINING SYSTEMS AND THAT IT IS FIXED. TODAY, 09/20/2020 WE HAD ANOTHER INCIDENT IN WHICH THE MALFUNCTION WAS WORSE AND WOULDN'T START AFTER WE TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM IS GETTING DANGEROUS AND SCARY WHILE DRIVING. AFTER TRYING TO FIND THE PROBLEM FOR OVER A WEEK, MY LOCAL JEEP SERVICE CENTER SAID THAT THEY FOUND RAW FUEL IN THE HOSE FROM THE PURGE VALVE, CHARCOAL FILTER, AND OTHER COMPONENTS. I WAS ASKED TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER ON MONDAY, SOME JEEP OWNERS ALSO REPORTED THAT AFTER 4 HOURS OF THE VEHICLE SITTING WITH THE ENGINE OFF, THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY, MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR THE DEALER TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE DURING DIAGNOSTIC AND THERE MAY NOT BE A CODE STORED THAT CAN BE PULLED BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. I HOPE THAT NHTSA KEEPS AN EYE FOR THIS, IF THE PROBLEM IS A KNOWN ISSUE BY NOW TO CHRYSLER-FIAT AND NO FIX HAS BEEN APPLIED TO CURRENT YEAR MODEL JEEPS, THEN CHRYSLER -FIAT MAY BE ACTING IN "BAD-FAITH" AND KNOWINGLY SELLING VEHICLES THAT SHOULD PROBABLY BE PART OF A NATIONWIDE RECALL CAMPAIGN, ALSO THERE IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN ABOUT A VEHICLE THAT IS RENDERED POWERLESS WHILE OPERATING ON A HIGHWAY OR IN OUR CASE, HAVING TO DRIVE ON THE STEEP HILLS OF THE PACIFIC NW AS PART OF OUR DAILY COMMUTE.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2020 Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Cherokee, 2019-2020 Ram 1500 Pickup, Ram 2500 Pickup, Ram 3500 Pickup, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Renegade and 2019 Dodge Challenger vehicles equipped with 8.4" or 12" radio displays. A software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
