Summary

The 2019+ Mercedes Sprinter EIS (Electronic Ignition System) module is bolted under the driver side dash board to the base of the A pillar where it meets with the firewall. The electrical connector of the module is pointing straight up - this is an issue because any liquids that might spill on the dash (dash cupholder) or any humidity from windshield interior condensation will drip right down the wiring and into the EIS module causing it to short out. _ If the EIS module shorts out, the vehicle will be inoperable until a new unit is fitted. _ The EIS module retails at $1800+ from Mercedes _ Had Mercedes installed the EIS module with the connector facing DOWNWARD - this moisture related issue would not exist. _ There is no drip loop provisions in the wiring. _ Mercedes is aware of the issue as they have created a plastic bag with part number A 638 546 00 35 and they are charging $20 for it. As of right now, Mercedes refuses to fix this issue preventatively. They will only repair it AFTER the EIS module has shorted out. They are refusing to treat this as a warranty claim even though it is clearly a manufacturer defect.

Summary

The 2020 Mercedes Sprinter EIS (Electronic Ignition System) module is placed directly to the base of A pillar. Its electrical connector is pointing straight up and cable entry does not have drop loop - this is an issue because any liquids that might spill on the dash (dash cupholder) or any humidity from windshield interior condensation will drip right down the wiring and into the EIS module causing it to short out. If the EIS module shorts out, the vehicle is inoperable and has to be towed to dealership for repair. MB retails EIS module at $1800+ MB knows it’s a product defect. In its service bulletin of LI54.21-N-069524, They had a temporary solution by using an plastic bag (part number A 638 546 00 35) to cover the top connector. As of right now, Mercedes refuses to fix this issue preventatively. They will only repair it AFTER the EIS module has shorted out. They are refusing to treat this as a warranty claim even though it is clearly a manufacturer defect. Please help? Thank you

Summary

On Sept 6 2021 the engine suddenly stalled/stopped while driving on 194 west of Pullman Wa. A partial restart enabled me to move to a safer location. The Check Engine light came on. I used myOBD scanner to identify engine failure fault codes. Electrical sensor short circuits were identified. Vehicle was transported to a MB dealer in Spokane where a chaffed engine wiring harness was identified as the cause. MB engineers in Stuttgart Germany confirmed this diagnosis. I have now learned that the factory harness installation rubbing against engine components has been an ongoing problem in the Sprinter Van. This defect has contributed to engine failures as acknowledged by several MB technicians. Owners of all affected MB Sprinter Vans should receive notice of this potentially dangerous wiring harness defect. MB USA should be mandated to recall and modify the harness attachment points where abrasion of the harness cover and wiring is occurring. Preventing unexpected engine shutdowns in Highway traffic must be a priority of any vehicle manufacturer. Rear end collisions endanger the safety and lives of vehicle occupants. The defective engine wiring harness installation should be addressed immediately. Please share my report with MB USA. Accident Prevention Saves Lives

Summary

My husband was stopped at a stop light on Sept. 9th when the van randomly (and without provocation) shifted itself from drive into park. We called the dealership to explain the problem and ask that they look into it. We made an appointment and dropped off the vehicle yesterday. Service Department called and verbally stated that they had taken a van on a test drive and that the van had acted "normally" and that they anticipated returning the van to us with the instruction that if we experienced the problem again to contact them. I was not happy with this response as I felt that the problem was a severe safety issue and not enough had been done to investigate it. I quickly googled "mercedes going into park on its own" and found an article detailing reports of 2010 mercedes sedans going into park on their own while the driver was slowing to stop (exactly as we experienced). An accompanying official mercedes benz service department memo in the article confirmed the problem, mentioned the "auto p" feature and blamed the problem on a faulty ignition switch. I called the service department back, referenced the memo and asked if a faulty ignition switch could be to blame. The service department stated that it would be impossible because the ignition switch has changed. They stated that my husband must have taken off his seat belt and engaged the auto p feature. My husband did not unbuckle his seat belt that day. The dealership returned the van noting that they were able to duplicate the issue and engage the auto p feature by unbuckling the driver's seat belt at low speed. My husband and I tried to duplicate and engage the auto p feature ourselves by unbuckling the driver's seat belt after it was returned but were unable to do so. Interestingly, mercedes benz has recently issued a recall for driver's manuals because they acknowledge that the directions for how to engage the feature as explained in the manual are incorrect. Unbuckling will not engage auto p.

Summary

On July 7, after driving a half hour late morning, we stopped to tour Skyline Caverns, Front Royal, VA. Parked in the shade. The vehicle was turned off for 90 minutes. Starting up, the following warnings began displaying: -- Active Lane Keeping Assist Inoperative -- LOW RANGE Malfunction - To Park, Apply Parking Brake -- ESP (Electronic Stability Program) Inoperative -- Active BAS (Brake Assist System) Functions Limited. See Operator's Manual. -- Blind Spot Assist Inoperative -- Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC Inoperative. Looked up items in the owner's manual. Accessed the MBUX on-line manual. Accessed the Assistance menu. Malfunctioning systems showing as "Function Unavailable". Called MB Roadside Assistance. They said vehicle drivable, but must be careful. Asked about the "LOW RANGE Malfunction" -- after the support person consulted with others, all uncertain about the impact highway driving would have on the "LOW RANGE Malfunction". Authorized tow to Euro Motorcars Bethesda Sprinter, 9030 Comprint Ct, Gaithersburg, MD 20877 Tel: 301-652-9000 / 301-881-5160. After the vehicle was parked at Comprint Ct after the tow, the same warnings continued to appear. I don't believe the dealer's mechanics were able to start working on the problem until July 12 at which time the warning messages were no longer appearing. Dealer has been unable to replicate malfunction. Mechanic supervisor drove vehicle 100 miles over the weekend of July 17 without replicating malfunction. Vehicle currently at Comprint Ct. Received NHTSA Recall #21V411 on July 24; the above described Malfunctions may be related to this recall.

BOUGHT VEHICLE 26 SEP 20 FROM GENERAL RV IN DRAPER, UTAH I WAS INFORMED OF THE WINNEBAGO REVEL 2ND ALTERNATOR RECALL NUMBER 162 HAD TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE I DROVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE LOT. SO, I WAS TOLD [PER MANAGER MIKE MALLORY] IT WAS COMPLETED ON OCTOBER 10TH AND THUS DROVE IT OFF THE LOT ON OCTOBER 22ND, 2020. FAST FORWARD FOUR MONTHS TO FEB 2021 AS STARTED TO NOTICE A GOD-AWFUL SQUEALING SOUND WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE NO MATTER WHAT TEMPERATURES AND IT HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE UP UNTIL APRIL NOW. ON 8 APRIL 21 WHILE AT A MERCEDES-BENZ DEALER IN FARMINGTON, UT I WAS TOLD THE SECONDARY ALTERNATOR WAS OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND THE ONE AND ONLY SERPENTINE BELT HAD EXCESSIVE WEAR, PLUS THE ISSUE WAS NOT A MERCEDES-BENZ WARRANTY ISSUE,, BUT RATHER A AN UP-FITTER (WINNEBAGO) PROBLEM PER MECHANIC TREVOR AND SERVICE REP ALEX! SO, ON 9 APR 21 I CONTACTED GENERAL RV AGAIN & SAID WHAT THE MERCEDES DEALER TOLD ME AND ON THE 22ND OF APRIL I PROVIDED PHOTOS OF THE ALTERNATOR ISSUE, SO THEY (PAUL DELUCA LEAD SVC REP) ORDERED THE RECALL KIT #162 FROM WB. HOWEVER, HERE'S THE REAL KICK IN THE FACE AKA COMPLAINT... WHY WOULD THEY NEED TO ORDER ANOTHER RECALL KIT WHEN THEY TOLD ME THEY STALLED IT IN OCTOBER 2020 BEFORE I COULD EVEN DRIVE IT OFF THE LOT? THEREFORE, GENERAL RV FLAT OUT LIED TO ME WHICH IS UNBELIEVABLE AND TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE ESPECIALLY WITH THE SEVERITY OF A SERPENTINE BELT FAILURE AT SPEED EQUALS LOSS OF STEERING AND CRASH AND/OR DEATH NO TO MENTION TOTALLED VEHICLE! SECOND ISSUE/COMPLAINT IS MY ACTIVE BRAKE AND DISTANCE SENSOR BEHIND THE GRILL HAS BEEN RANDOMLY FAILING ESPECIALLY AT THE WORST TIMES I.E. LONG ROAD TRIPS! SO, THIS RENDERS THE CRUISE CONTROL & SMART BRAKING INOPERABLE WHICH IS UNACCEPTABLE ON A NEW VEHICLE WITH ONLY A FEW THOUSAND MILES ON IT. SO, I HAVE BEEN TO THE SAME MB DEALER IN FARMINGTON, UT 3NOR 4 TIMES TO FINALLY FIX IT, BUT NO FIX!!

I ONLY HAVE ABOUT 2200 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE BUT I HAVE NOTICED 3 TIMES THAT THE ELECTRONIC 4 WHEEL DRIVE ENGAGED BY ITSELF AS I WAS MOVING DOWN THE ROAD. YOUR ARE ONLY SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO ENGAGE THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE WHILE STOPPED. I NEVER NOTICED ANYTHING UNTIL I SAW THE RED LIGHT WHICH COMES ON WHEN THE 4 WHEEL IS ENGAGED. I WENT ON LINE TO SEE IF OTHERS HAD EXPERIENCED THIS AND I SAW SEVERAL REPORTS OF THE SYSTEM ENGAGING AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GET IT DISENGAGED AS WELL AS HAVING THE VEHICLE NOT BE DRIVABLE AFTERWARDS. I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCE ANYTHING BUT IT GOING INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE ON ITS ON WITHOUT ME ENGAGING IT. IT OCCURRED WHILE IN MOTION AND TWICE ON EXPRESSWAYS AND ONCE ONN A LOCAL LOW SPEED ROAD

Summary

WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND PASSING UNDER A ROAD SIGN DESCRIBING THE NEXT EXIT, THE SPRINTER VAN AUTOMATIC CRASH AVOIDANCE KICKED IN, CAUSING THE VAN TO AUTOMATICALLY JAM ON THE BRAKES AND LOSE APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH WHILE CAUSING THE WHEEL TO PULL DECIDEDLY TO THE LEFT. THERE WERE NO VEHICLES IN FRONT OR BEHIND, AND THANKFULLY ENOUGH NONE CLOSE ENOUGH TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON OCCURRENCE, AND EVEN IF THE BRAKES DO NOT ENGAGE, THE CRASH AVOIDANCE ALERT SOUND WILL OFTEN TIMES CHIME AND STARTLE THE DRIVER FOR OTHER OVERHEAD OBSTACLES LIKE TRAFFIC SIGNS AND TUNNEL ENTRIES. THIS FEATURE, ALONG WITH LANE DEPARTURE ASSIST (WHICH ALSO IS BUGGY) AUTOMATICALLY TURNS ON AFTER EVERY RESTART, EVEN AFTER BEING TURNED OFF MANUALLY. IT IS UNSAFE.

I TOOK MY VAN TO THE LOCAL MERCEDES DEALER CONCERNED ABOUT NHTSA RECALL 20V-663. I KNOW OWNERS OF SPRINTER VANS WHO ARE TAKING THEIR VANS IN FOR THIS RECALL AND THE SPRING TYPE POWER STEERING CLAMP IS BEING REPLACED WITH A SCREW CLAMP. MY 2020 SPRINTER BUILT IN FEB. 2020 IS NOT BEING CAPTURED BY THE SCOPE OF THIS RECALL YET HAS A SPRING CLAMP INSTALLED AND THE HOSE IS NOT FULLY SEATED. MY VS30 PLATFORM 907 VAN WAS MANUFACTURED IN GERMANY RATHER THAN CHARLESTON, SC AND FOR SOME REASON IS BEING EXCLUDED FROM THIS RECALL. MY LOCAL MERCEDES DEALER WILL NOT ADDRESS THIS FOR ME. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THE SCOPE OF THIS RECALL NEEDS TO BE OPENED UP TO INCLUDE VS30 PLATFORM 907 SPRINTER VANS MANUFACTURED IN GERMANY DURING THIS SAME TIME PERIOD. PHOTO INCLUDED SHOWS A VERIFIED COMPLETED RECALL REPAIR.

MY BRAND NEW 2020 MERCEDES SPRINTER 2500 VAN JUST LIKE. EVERYONE ELSE'S ON THAT VEHICLE HAS A POWER STEERING HOSE THAT IS TOO SHORT. BECAUSE OF THIS A FAIR AMOUNT OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS COME OFF AND ENDED UP STRANDED. WHEN IT COMES OFF YOU LOSE POWER STEERING. IF THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING IT COULD BE DANGEROUS. I CALLED MERCEDES BENZ OF WESTMINSTER IN CO AND THEY SAID THEY CANNOT FIX THIS UNTIL THERE IS A RECALL FOR MY PARTICULAR VIN. OTHER VINS HAVE RECEIVED A RECALL ALREADY. I AM AFRAID THAT BY DRIVING THIS VEHICLE LIKE THIS IT PRESENTS A DANGER TO MYSELF AND OTHER ON THE ROAD. I AM TRYING TO BE PROACTIVE AND FIX THIS BEFORE THERE IS A BIGGER PROBLEM. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. I THINK THEY SHOULD BE. HALTED FROM SELLING THESE VEHICLES UNTIL THIS IS FIXED. *DT*JB

THERE WAS ALREADY A RECALL ON THIS ITEM IN CANADA, MERCEDES NEEDS TO COME UP WITH A PERMANENT FIX TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. I EVEN TOOK SOME ADDITIONAL PRECAUTIONS AND HAD MERCEDES INSTALLED A STRONGER CLAMP ON THE POWER STEERING HOSE. EVEN WITH THIS CLAMP IN PLACE, THE HOSE STILL CAME OFF AFTER DRIVING LESS THAN 1000 MILES. THE HYDRAULIC FLUID THAT MERCEDES SPECIFIES IS NOT COMMONLY FOUND ALSO LEADING TO DELAYS IN GETTING IT REPAIRED.

THE ACTIVE LANE KEEPING ASSIST FORCED THE VAN BACK INTO THE LANE AND TOWARDS THE JUNK IN THE ROAD AND ENDED UP RUNNING OVER IT. IT COULD OF BEEN A LOT WORSE IF THE OBJECT WAS BIGGER, A CAR, PERSON OR ANIMAL. I SHOULD BE ABLE TO TURN IT OFF ONCE! NOT EVERY TIME I HAVE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THIS WORRIES ME ESPECIALLY. THE 4WD IN THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT DISENGAGE PROPERLY EVEN WHEN DONE PER THE OWNERS MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS. UNDER 1,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE . FOR EXAMPLE, I STOPPED THE VEHICLE, SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL, ENGAGED 4WD AND DROVE FOR 15-20 MINUTES ON A DIRT ROAD. I PULLED OVER TO ENJOY THE VIEW, PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK BUT LEFT THE ENGINE RUNNING. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO PUT THE VEHICLE BACK INTO DRIVE, THE 4WD DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO DISENGAGE (WITHOUT ME PUSHING THE BUTTON TO DO SO) AND IT MADE ALL SORTS OF LOUD GRINDING AND CLANGING SOUNDS AS THE MECHANICAL PARTS BASHED AROUND. I WENT TO NEUTRAL TO DISENGAGE AND THAT DID NOT SOLVE IT. IT REFUSED TO GO BACK TO 4WD EITHER AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS INOPERABLE. I TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF SEVERAL TIMES AND FINALLY GOT IT TO BE DRIVABLE AGAIN IN 4WD. ALL OF THIS HAPPENED ON A FOREST SERVICE DIRT ROAD, ALMOST FLAT SURFACE WITH JUST A SLIGHT ANGLE BACKWARD IF I TOOK FOOT OFF BRAKE.
