I IMMEDIATELY DROVE IT 6 MILES HOME TO PARK IT. HAD IT TOWED AN HOUR LATER. THE SHOP SAID THE ROD BUSTED AND WENT THROUGH MY ENGINE AND NO OIL WAS IN THE CAR. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUES WITH THIS TYPE OF CAR. THIS EXPERIENCE HAS REALLY DRAMATIZED ME. NOT SURE IF MY INSURANCE WILL PAY FOR IT AND I WILL HAVE TO COME OUT OF POCKET TO REPLACE AN ENGINE THAT COULD HAVE POSSIBLY BEEN A RECALL. BASED OF MY VIN: ITS NOT, BUT JANUARY 2019 & APRIL 2016, THERE WERE RECALLS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. ITS NOT RIGHT.

MILEAGE WAS ABOUT 16,500. ON THE FREEWAY GOING ABOUT 70 MPH, CAR SHUT DOWN WITH ALARM INFORMATION AND INTO A CONTROLLED GLIDE, NOT ALLOWING ACCELERATION. AFTER ALMOST BEING RUN INTO I WAS ABLE TO MOVE TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER AND PER DIRECTIONS, SHUT OFF MOTOR. WAS ABLE TO RESTART. WENT THREE MILES TO MY DESTINATION AND CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALER. THEY DID NOT KNOW THE PROBLEM, AND AFTER TWO DAYS I GOT THE CAR RETURNED. THEY SAID THEY HAD TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER TO FIND THE DEFECT. GOING HOME THAT EVENING AFTER TRAVELING ABOUT EIGHT MILES AND AGAIN ON THE FREEWAY GOING ABOUT 70 MPH, THE CAR AGAIN DID THE SAME THING ON THE FREEWAY. AGAIN STARTING IT, THE CAR WENT ANOTHER FIVE MILES ON THE FREEWAY WHEN IT AGAIN HAPPENED. THREE TIMES, SAME THING!!! (MUCH LIKE WHAT I READ ABOUT THE PRIUS TWO DAYS AGO.) NO LONGER FEELING THE CAR WAS SAFE IN THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO DODGE VEHICLES ON A FREEWAY WHEN A CAR SHUTS DOWN THREE TIMES, I TRADED IT IN. ALL I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT IT HAD TO DO WITH THE HYBRID SYSTEM.

ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHILE TRAVELING ON HIGHWAYS AT HIGHWAY SPEED IN EV MODE, GETTING A WARNING "CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM TURN OFF ENGINE" ALONG WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT; THESE ARE THE OCCURRENCE DATES 12/01/2017, 12/11/2017, 12/23/2017, 01/06/2018. EACH TIME HAS BEEN ACCOMPANIED BY A COMPLETE LOSS OF GASOLINE ENGINE AVAILABILITY RESULTING IN A SIGNIFICANT AND UNSAFE DROP IN VEHICLE SPEED DUE TO THE CAR ONLY BEING ABLE TO CONTINUE RUNNING ON BATTERY POWER. AFTER PULLING OVER I HAVE BEEN ABLE SHUTDOWN THE CAR AND RESTART. UPON RESTART, THE GASOLINE ENGINE DOES COME BACK ON. ALSO NOTE THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT HAS TURNED BACK OFF BY THE TIME I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE CAR HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE NOW AND SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED BOTH TIMES UNDER WARRANTY. THE FIRST REPAIR ATTEMPT ON 12/12/2017; THE DEALER WAS INSTRUCTED BY HYUNDAI TO TRY TSB 16-01-020-1. THE SECOND REPAIR ATTEMPT ON 12/27/2017; THERE HAD BEEN A P261F AND P0A0F FAULT CODE AND THE DEALER WAS INSTRUCTED BY HYUNDAI TO REPLACE ALL FOUR SPARK PLUG COILS. THESE ATTEMPTS HAVE NOT FIXED THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM AS REPRESENTED BY THE LATEST OCCURRENCE ON 01/06/2018. JUST SAW ON TV CONSUMER REPORTS ABOUT POOR NIGHT VISION WITH SUV HEADLIGHTS AND WAS REMINDED OF A PROBLEM I HAVE THAT MAY AFFECT OTHER VEHICLES HEADLIGHTS. I HAVE A 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID. I WAS DRIVING HOME AT NIGHT THIS LAST WINTER DURING A VERY HEAVY WET SNOWSTORM WHEN I NOTICED MY HEADLIGHTS SEEM TO BE GETTING DIMMER AND DIMMER. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THE SNOW STORM WAS JUST GETTING WORSE BUT IT WAS WAY TOO UNSAFE TO STOP AND CHECK THEM SO I JUST DROVE SLOWER AND SLOWER. WHEN I GOT HOME IN MY GARAGE, I NOTICED THAN THERE WAS AT LEAST A COUPLE OF INCHES OF SNOW BUILT UP OVER MY HEADLIGHTS SEVERELY LIMITING HOW MUCH LIGHT WAS PASSING THROUGH THEM. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ALSO BURNING WAY TO COOL TO MELT OFF THE SNOW AS OUR OTHER VEHICLES HAD. SO ARE MOST OF THE NEWER HEADLIGHTS BURNING COOLER OR IS THIS JUST A FREAK PROBLEM I HAD?

THIS BEHAVIOR CAN BE RELIABLY REPRODUCED BY "FLOORING IT" (ALL THE WAY, INCLUDING KICKDOWN) AND NOT LETTING GO - AS IF ONE IS EXECUTING A PASSING MANEUVER. THE POWER LOSS WILL OCCUR AT THE NEXT SHIFT POINT AFTER KICK DOWN, AND WILL NOT BE CLEARED UNTIL THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS RELEASED AND RE-APPLIED - OR AFTER APPROXIMATELY 15 TO 20 SECONDS AFTER THE OCCURRENCE IF THE DRIVER DOES NOT RELEASE THE PEDAL. IN CASES WHERE THE PEDAL IS NOT RELEASED AFTER THE POWER LOSS, THE VEHICLE WILL SURGE SUDDENLY AFTER THE CONDITION HAS CLEARED AND REPEAT THE BEHAVIOR DESCRIBED ABOVE. THIS BEHAVIOR CAN BE REPRODUCED IN ANY DRIVE PROGRAM MODE (ECO, NORMAL, SPORT,) AND IN BOTH AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL SHIFT SELECTION MODES, AND IS ESPECIALLY PREVALENT AT SPEEDS ABOVE 45 MPH WHERE SUDDEN FULL THROTTLE COMMAND CAUSES KICKDOWN. THE DRIVETRAIN SHOULD RESPOND RELIABLY WHEN IT IS COMMANDED FULL-THROTTLE. A SUDDEN POWER LOSS AT A SHIFT POINT DURING A FULL THROTTLE MANEUVER IS UNSAFE: (1) IT DISORIENTATES THE DRIVER AND; (2) CAUSES UN-COMMANDED, UNEXPECTED, AND RAPID CHANGES IN DRIVING FORCE, WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION, FRICTION, AND REACTION FORCES WHICH COULD LEAD TO A LOSS OF CONTROL.

Summary

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID. WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE UP OR DOWN AN HILL, IT FAILED TO MAINTAIN THE DESIRED SPEED. INSTEAD, THE VEHICLE'S SPEED WOULD INCREASE OR DECREASE 5-6 MPH FROM THE DESIRED SPEED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S RESUME FEATURE FAILED TO RETURN THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DESIRED SPEED WHEN DRIVING. THE FEATURE SET THE VEHICLE AT THE AUTOMATIC SET SPEED OF 40 MPH. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE SPEED CONTROL ONLY WORKED ON HIGH INCLINE TYPE OF ROAD CONDITIONS. IN ADDITION, THE RESUME FEATURE FAILED. THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER SYSTEM WAS RESET; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND BELIEVED IT MAY BE PART OF THE DESIGN FEATURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,000. *TR

Summary

NEW SONATA HYBRID, OWNED 3 MONTHS, MILEAGE 6,000 MILES. RIGHT REAR BRAKES HAVE LOCKED ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS AT LOW SPEED WHILE NEGOTIATING A HARD LEFT TURN ON A STATE HIGHWAY. BOTH FAILURES OCCURRED AT THE SAME HIGHWAY LOCATION ABOUT A MONTH APART. WHEN THE RIGHT REAR BRAKES LOCKED, THE VEHICLE WAS HARD TO CONTROL AND AS I WAS NEGOTIATING A SHARP TURN ON A MOUNTAIN ROAD, IT WAS TERRIFYING. IF THERE HAD BEEN OTHER VEHICLES COMING IN THE OPPOSING LANE, THERE VERY EASILY COULD HAVE BEEN A HEAD-ON COLLISION OR WORSE (I.E CAR OVER THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN). CAR WILL BE TAKEN TO DEALER FOR ANALYSIS AND REPAIR.
