The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall repair of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine) and the dealer-installed a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System; however, while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle began to stall. The check engine warning light illuminated. The contact was able to push the vehicle to the side of the road with assistance. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. Then, the vehicle was taken to a transmission specialist who diagnosed that the transmission was in great condition; however, the engine was not communicating with the transmission. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who completed a transmission relearn; however, the vehicle was sluggish while accelerating from a complete stop. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that there were metal shavings in the engine oil, the engine was knocking loudly, and there was a significant amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust. The dealer reset the Knock Sensor Detection System software. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring and the vehicle would not exceed 45 MPH. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer - Hyundai of Yuma (1125 E 32nd St, Yuma, AZ 85365) who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The second dealer sent a diagnostic report to the manufacturer and requested a new engine; however, the manufacturer denied the request due to the vehicle having a salvage title. The contact stated that only the rear end of the vehicle was reconstructed as the vehicle was involved in a crash. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 58,900.

Summary

- When it shifts from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd gear, the RPMs will keep going up until I take my foot off the gas. So if I need to merge onto a highway quickly and it stalls in one gear, it can go up to 6k or 7k RPMs without shifting. I never let it get past it because I take my foot off the gas to let it shift because I'm afraid it will blow something. - When in automatic and at a stop, if you go, it will sometimes rev up a little high before shifting and also pull a lot faster versus other times when it shifts normally. To keep me on my toes, it will sometimes do the opposite and not accelerate very well at all. Almost like I press the gas and nothing happens until it's pressed all the way and then it will go. - The tachometer will lag on what RPM the engine is actually on. So you'll know it's clearly at 3k but it will only read on 1k for a few seconds before quickly going up to what it's supposed to be on. - There's also a knocking noise when my car is idling for a little while. It's every 5 to 10 minutes there's a loud knock coming from the engine. - I also understand when driving slow, for example like a drive-thru, DCT don't typically like that. But when I am in a line like that or traffic, it will stutter as if it's about to stall or shut off completely. And not like a light shake, it was very noticeable that everyone felt as if it was going to sputter and turn off. With these multiple issues, it makes me and my passengers feel extremely unsafe and it's concerning that anytime I've taken it to the dealership it's shrugged off by saying the DCT transmissions sometimes "act weird". I'm not sure how that's an answer to something that is pretty dangerous.

Engine knocking loudly on cold start indicating possible rod bearing wear addressed on nhtsa safety recall number 20v746000. Car was taken to hyundai dealer for recall engine inspection and given clean bill of health and removed from recall listing. Vehicle was at the dealership for less than an hour which is not enough time to do the necessary inspection for rod bearing wear. Knock sensor software was updated, but knock sensors are designed to detect piston clatter or knock, known as preignition. Knock sensors do not and cannot detect engine noise from worn rod bearings. The inspection method obviously did not include any actual mechanical measurement for bearing runout to determine actual wear, but instead was based on what the tech could hear and his personal determination or that of his superior. I contend my car is still at risk for early engine failure as outlined in the safety recall and should be reinstated for a proper inspection.

While I was driving down the road I suddenly heard a rod knock coming from the engine. I immediately pulled over and turned the car off. I was fortunate that I am aware of this known problem and can recognize the symptoms. An oil warning like appeared after the sound of the rod knock and just before I turned the engine off. I was on a local highway at the time and knew that the rod knock would likely result in an engine fire if I did not turn it off immediately. I checked the oil on the car and found that it was suddenly very low, which came as a surprise because I had just checked the oil a couple days before. I have since read that a common symptom associated with the Hyundai engine problems is sudden excessive oil consumption. After contacting Hyundai and insisting that this is a known problem with the 2016 Veloster Turbo they inspected the engine and confirmed the rod bearing was worn and the rod was knocking. They refused to acknowledge that ANY 2016 Velosters had been recalled for engine problems and refused to discuss it further. Since my car was still under warranty, the most they would agree to was partially covering the repair under warranty because I had modified the air intake on the car. To exacerbate the scenario, it took over 3 months for the local dealership to complete the repairs which were completed in just a few hours.

My driveway has a slight incline to get out of and every morning when I start to leave the car will start to jerk- like it isn't gong into gear and i have to back off the gas pedal to stop it. It is hard to describe. But it definitely should not be making that sound. Yes I can take if for inspection. When I am at a stop light or just stopped and whenever I turn the car wants to hesitate and sometimes jerks me. Transmission issue here I believe. About got hit on several times because of the engine not performing when I press the gas. When I drive on the highway for 2-4 hrs, when I get off and stop the car is like it is still on the highway. Meaning when I push on the throttle it takes off. As far as I know, when I take my car to Hyundai for oil changes and maintenance work they haven't inspected my car. Ever since I purchased the car- it has never ran right. Something for sure is wrong with the motor- When I need the turbo to work- it kicks in around 40 mile an hr- not when I put on the gas. The car just runs terrible. There is also a horrible blind spot on both sides where the mirrors are. Horrible.

My vehicle’s check engine light is on, low oil pressure light is on, the engine is knocking, it’s overheating, stalling, and loss of power and acceleration. I have almost gotten hit by other vehicles multiple times because the vehicle has stalled or won’t accelerate. This has happened on the interstate and when pulling out into traffic. I have tried for days to an appointment at multiple Hyundai locations near me to get it fixed because it has all the symptoms that the recall says to look for. I called 5 dealerships and there are no appointments available. The earliest one is a week away. Customer care is no help at all. They basically told me to figure it out on my own. I am a single mother of 2 and now I have no transportation because of their faulty engine and they are doing nothing to help fix it. What if I get hit because my engine stalls and my kids are in the car with me? What if my engine catches fire because of this? I get shut down by every dealership and they won’t even offer a loaner or rental in place of driving the death trap they sold me until they can fix it. What can I do??

I took my 2016 Veloster in because my car was included in the rod bearing shavings possibly going back into engine and cause fire. I have since taken my car proven they didn’t pull the filters out or the oil pan to look for shavings as it’s should be check that way to ensure no findings of metal In oil. My car was in their service for over 28 hours without it being looked at. I called and somehow 15 minutes later the car is done and come get it and nothing is wrong ! I call BS my car is still a safety problem. I still have the bogging of the engine and times I press gas and car won’t move. My family owns a collision shop grew up around cars still am and there is no way you can plug a computer into the module and it show you metal shavings. Can only be done by removing filter cutting it open and pulling the oil pan. I asked to see it and the refused ! I am not happy with my car and how it cannot drive normal and it’s a serious safety concern. I want my engine replaced as the recall states or replace my entire car I’m filing a law suit against Hyundai and their lack Of concern or lying and not properly handling such a Serious recall. Till you pull my engine and prove to me there is zero unwanted metal in my engine I will continue to contact news shows the news papers and motor trend. I refuse to be treated like I’m an idiot when I had questions and asked them about the pan being pulled and filter removed they said we only need to connect it to the computer. That’s a lie you cannot get metal settlement from a computer !! I have now had 2 other mechanics look at it and they will testify my engine needs to be pulled out replaced and or get me into a safe car or the lawsuit will only cost Hyundai

Brakes intermittently malfunction - when issue occurs, brake pedal will loosely sink to floor without slowing the car down and will only engage suddenly when the pedal is pressed all the way to the bottom. Safety of driver, other drivers, and pedestrians are put at risk because the car cannot be reliably stopped. In the latest incident, the driver could not get the brakes to engage and had to swerve the vehicle into the sidewalk to avoid pedestrians. The malfunction occurs randomly, mostly in stop-and-go situations (traffic, stop signs, parking lot, traffic lights, etc.). Malfunction has persisted for the last 8 months. There has been 3 attempts to fix by the dealership from which the car was purchased - replacing brake pads and rotors, flushing the brake line, and replacing the ABS system. The dealership was able to replicate the issue. The issue has returned after every fix attempt and vehicle is with the dealership for a fourth attempt. No warnings or messages have come up from the vehicle to indicate the issue.

The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and check the oil and noticed the oil was low. The driver placed oil in the vehicle to continue to drive to their residence. After few days the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have an oil change done on the vehicle but the failure persisted several times. The contact then received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign number: 20V746000 (Engine) which took their vehicle to a local dealer to have the vehicle inspected due to the contact concerns that the failure on the vehicle was related to the recall. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated the vehicle was fine but they did not place the Knock sensor detection system software on the vehicle as part of the recall repair remedy. After a few weeks, the contact was driving back to the residence when they heard a knocking noise coming from their vehicle, the vehicle lost motive power, and stalled in front of their residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 83,000.

WHILE DRIVING 60 MILES AN HOUR ON THE INTERSTATE HEADING TO WORK I BEGIN TO HEAR A KNOCKING FROM MY ENGINE. I PUT MY FLASHERS ON AND BEGIN TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE I BEGIN TO SMELL SMOKE. I WAS ABLE TO NAVIGATE INTO THE NEAREST GAS STATION AND TURN THE CAR OFF. WHEN I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR IT WOULD NOT TURN OVER. I CHECKED THE OIL JUST TO MAKE SURE BECAUSE OF THE SMELL AND THE OIL WAS DEPLETED. I PUT THREE LAYERS OF OIL INTO MY CAR SO I COULD GET IT STARTED ENOUGH TO GET IT TO THE EXPRESS OIL CHANGE NEARBY. I DROPPED MY CAR OFF THERE AND THEY PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE ENGINE HAD FAILED. I MADE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH MY DEALER WHO FINALLY CONTACTED ME BACK TODAY SAYING THEY WOULD TAKE A LOOK AT THE CAR AND LET ME KNOW IF IT WAS PART OF THE RECALL. THEY FOUND THREE CODES THAT HAD TO DO WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, THE FUEL INJECTOR, AND THE COILS . THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED HOME AND THE CONTACT'S SON ATTEMPTED TO FIX THE VEHICLE ON HIS OWN. HE APPLIED A FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER CLEANER AND THE VEHICLE OPERATED WITH NO PROBLEMS. THE ISSUES OCCURRED AGAIN ON 09/03/20 WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SMOKE WHILE TRAVELLING AT 30 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND THE SON OPENED THE HOOD . SMOKE CAME OUT AND THEN FLAMES BURST FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS SOON ENGULFED AND THE ENTIRE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WAS BURNED DOWN. THE FLAMES WERE PUT OUT BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. A POLICE REPORT AND A FIRE REPORT WERE FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES THAT REQUIRED TRANSPORT BY AN AMBULANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND THE WRECKAGE WAS TOWED AWAY. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED YET. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

I WAS GOING ABOUT 30 MILES AN HOUR IN VERY LIGHT TRAFFIC. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THEY DETERMINED ONSITE THAT THE FIRE WAS DUE TO A FUEL LEAK. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. PRIOR TO THIS ON 10/3/2019 I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I THOUGHT THE VEHICLE WAS LEAKING GAS. THEY INSPECTED THE CAR AND SAID THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY DID NOT IDENTIFY ANY GAS LEAK. WE HAVE CONTACTED THEM SINCE THE FIRE AND THEY ARE DENYING ANY RESPONSIBILITY. MY COMPLAINT WAS BASED ON THE FACT THAT MY VEHICLE WAS STRUCK AT A SPEED OF GREATER THAN 30 MILES PER HOUR AND LESS THAN 60 MILES PER HOUR AND THAT THE DAMAGES DONE TO MY VEHICLE WERE RIGHT ON THE RIGHT REAR AIRBAG SENSOR BUT NONE OF MY AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN A LINGERING ODOR OF LEAKING GAS BUT HYUNDAI REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO TAKE FAULT. SINCE THAT I HAVE HAD SEVERE MIGRAINES AND DEVELOPED REALLY BAD ARTHRITIS IN BOTH ARMS AND BOTH SHOULDERS. MY PREVIOUS INSURANCE COMPANY PAID OUT MORE MONEY TO THE PEOPLE THAT HIS ME AND DEEMED THE ACCIDENT A 50/50 FAULT ON BOTH PARTIES. CAR HAS HAD TWO DCT UPDATES, ONE ENGINE UPDATE ALL HAVE NOT FIXED THE JERK ACCELERATION AND SPORADIC UNABLENESS TO GET VEHICLE GOING BUT RPMS RISE. CAR HAS GOTTEN STUCK IN GEAR WHEN MERGING ONTO FREEWAY, THE CAR HAS HAD ITS RPMS RISE CONTINUOUS TO RED LINE WHILE FOOT WAS ENTIRELY OFF THE GAS PEDAL THEN RPMS FELL AND ACCELERATION FUCNTION RESUMED. NO REAL HELP FROM HYUNDAI AS OF YET OR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF A PROBLEM. ISSUE HAS BEEN REPORTED TO THEM SINCE 2016. THIS ISSUE HAS ALSO OCCURED ON HIGHWAYS WHILE IN A HIGHER GEAR AS WELL AS INTERSECTIONS AT LOWER GEAR. GEARS SHIFT EFFORLTESSLY AND SMOOTH SOMEDAYS AND ERADICT AND UNRELIABLE OTHER DAYS. ALSO HAS FAILED TO ACCELERATE AFTER RED LIGHT RIGHT TURNS THAT COULD CLEARLY BE MADE, HOWEVER WHEN THE VEHICLE GETS STUCK AND WONT ACCELERATE THE RISK OF GETTING HIT OR REAR ENDED IS OF HIGH PROBABLILITY AND CONCERN. ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WILL HAPPEN. ISSUE OCCURS SPORADICALLY (AVG COUPLE TIMES A MONTH) SINCE JUNE 2016 WHICH MAKES IT HARD TO DUPLICATE BUT IT OCCURS AND IS WITHOUT A DOUBT A SAFETY ISSUE AND THE CAR IS NOT FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED. PROUD MILITARY FAMILY IN THIS OUR SOLE VEHICLE, WHICH IS NOT GETTING THE ATTENTION IT NEEDS FROM HYUNDAI IN REGARDS TO THIS MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN.
