Checking a used ATV

Ask to see the title before you see the ATV or side-by-side. Check that the VIN on the document matches the number stamped on the frame — not just the one on a sticker, which can be replaced. A mismatch is the end of the conversation.

Then run the number. An ATV or side-by-side that has been declared a total loss and rebuilt can look perfectly straight, and the seller is not always the person who did the rebuilding.

Where to find the VIN on an ATV

On an ATV or side-by-side the VIN is usually stamped into the frame — commonly on the steering head, the down tube, or the frame rail near the engine — and repeated on the title and registration. Engine numbers are a different thing and are not interchangeable with the VIN.
